ACIDIZING, as the terns is used in the petroleum production industry, involves the use of hydrochloric acid in predominantly limestone formations, resulting in the lowering of resistance offered to the flow of oil and gas through the oil-bearing formation, usually with resultant increased production. A number of articles have been written on the chemical treatment of oil and gas wells; a bibliography of these works will appear in Volume 123 of the Institute's TRANSACTIONS (1937), and a few other references are appended to this paper.

SEVERAL important changes have been' made during 1933 in the compilation and distribution of technical literature to those interested in nonferrous physical metallurgy. The Institute of Metals, of Great Britain, announced that preprints of all its papers would be distributed monthly to all members in combination with their bulletin of abstracts. The A.I.M.E. has announced that it will distribute to all members of the Institute of Metals and Iron and Steel Divisions a monthly bulletin entitled Metals, which will carry preprints of all publications of interest to the members of these two divisions. The American Society for Steel Treating has declared its intention to change its name to the American Society for Metals in order to indicate the broader scope of its activities. The abstract service of Metals and Alloys has been improved and expanded, covering practically the entire field of metallurgical literature. These changes and innovations now provide unparalleled reference service entirely in the English language.

OUR mineral-land laws need revising so as to provide definite title at the outset to the mineral deposits within any definite piece of land. The laws as they now stand, especially those applicable to lodes, breed uncertainty as to rights of possession prior to patent; and to my mind this is the worst feature of all, worse even than the apex bugbear. It is now almost impossible for anybody to tell-with certainty what mineral rights exist within any area that is not covered by patent, or whether any valid rights exist at all. Our system is unique in permitting individuals to appropriate and exploit mineral lands of the public domain without notice of any kind to the Federal government, and to relinquish them without any ceremony at all. The result is a clouded record that cannot be cleared up until each claimant is put to some sort of final proof. In order to accomplish this, new Federal legislation will be required. The requirements for a mineral survey and the proceedings for patent have always been cumbersome and expensive; and perhaps out of regard for the poor claim owner, who can ill afford the outlay for that sort of thing, the law does not require him to go. through it unless he chooses to do so. Consequently, every active mining district has become encumbered with tangled groups of doubtful or conflicting locations, whose rights and boundaries, when any valuable ore is found, must usually be determined by lawsuits that are as expensive and as distressing as the stakes are high. So deeply has litigation entered into our mining system that a claim whose rights have never been disputed would probably be set down offhand, by $miner of the old school, as of no value. Think of the litigation over rights of possession on the Com-stock lode—12 leading companies involved 'in an aggregate of 245 suits within a period of less than eight years! Ambiguous local records; the chance of erroneously placed or obliterated monuments; doubt as to the sufficient performance of the statutory annual labor; uncertainty as to prior conflicting or overlapping locations; anxiety as to the changing attitude of the Department of the Interior and the Forest Service—such considerations as these make an unpatented mining claim an unclean thing in the eyes of possible investors. This article is a critical review of the influence of surface preparation on crack formation at Vickers indentations in the test used by Palmqvist3-7 to evaluate the toughness of cemented carbides. Experimental results are presented which clearly show that grinding introduces compressive surface stresses into the cobalt phase and thus reduces the crack length. The deformed surface layer is removed by polishing and a stress pattern is approached corresponding to that in the bulk material. Cracks of maximum length are characteristic of this stress state. Deformation stresses can be removed by annealing above 800°C. On the basis of these results , sample preparation for the crack length test can be simplified, the accuracy of measurement is improved, and a simple and significani parameter is found to describe crack resistance of cemented carbides. FOLLOWING suggestions by Ammann and Hinniiber,1'2 Palmqvist3-7 developed a method for testing the toughness of cemented carbides using as a measure the sum of crack lengths at the four corners of a Vickers hardness indentation. This method has several advantages over the bend test commonly used in carbide technology: a) specially formed samples are unnecessary; b) sufficient information can be obtained from one sample; c) the scatter is relatively small; d) the range of actual values for commercial cutting alloys is wide. Thus, this test is both cheaper and more precise than the bend test. Nevertheless, Palmqvist's method is not widely used, mainly for two reasons: a) The relationship between crack length and the technological properties of the material (wear and shock resistance) is not clear. b) The crack length is strongly dependent on surface treatment. It is necessary, therefore, that surface preparation be very precise and reproducible, conditions usually hard to obtain. While any other simple mechanical test has this first drawback, the second became crucial in the application of the crack length method as a practical test. The reasons that this drawback could not be eliminated are, in our opinion, misleading and inconsistent interpretations of the influence of surface preparation on the crack length given in literature. In the following, after a short review of previous experimental results the interpretations given by different authors,4?'-11 cf. Table I, are discussed critically and a consistent explanation is presented on the basis of which improvements of the method of crack length testing are proposed. 1) PREVIOUS EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS In his first attempt to use the cracks at Vickers impressions as a quantitative measure of the toughness of cemented carbides, palmqvist3 calculated the work necessary to initiate cracks by the formula: Sk =k.Pk. [I] where k = numerical constant = 6.49, Sk = critical work to initiate cracks (gf cm), Pk = critical load (load necessary to initiate cracks) HV = Vickers hardness (kp per sq mm). The difficulties involved in experimental determination of the critical load were overcome by the observation that a linear relation holds between the applied load and the sum of the crack lengths at the four corners of the indentation. This linear function, given by Eq. [2] below, was confirmed by Dawihl and Alt-meyer9and by our experiments, see Fig. 1: I = a1.P +a2 [2] where 1 = sum of the crack lengths at a Vickers indentation, P = applied load, al, a2 = parameters dependent on the toughness of the alloy and the surface preparation. The critical load, Pk, is now given by a2, which can be obtained by extrapolating the load vs crack length line to zero crack length, see Fig. 1. This simple relationship, Eq. [2], led Palmqvist1,7 to a parameter which was more reproducible and easier to obtain experimentally than the critical work: the work, S300, put into the sample to produce an average crack length of 300 µm per indentation. This parameter is calculated using the formula: where the load, P3oo, giving a crack length of 300 µm, can be taken from the load-crack length plot, Fig. 1,

THE story of the rolling of strip steel is not limited to any one plant or individual or group of individuals. It is a story with many ramifications. First of all, it should be understood that the strip mills we are considering are continuous mills, in that the steel passes directly from one mill to the other in a more or less straight line. Continuous mills are not new; in fact, they have been used for many years in the rolling of a few simple shapes. They were, however, driven by one motor through jackshafts, and as a result the speed of each roll stand had a fixed relation to that of every other stand in the series. This in turn fixed the reduction that could be made in each stand. The mill could produce simple things, but was not satisfactory for the production of the variety of strip now required. Bituminous coal has for many years been used for the smelting of iron-ores in the blast-furnace. In some districts in Scotland it is used alone, in others it is used mixed with coke. The similar use of certain bituminous coals in the United States has been repeatedly mentioned in the Transactions. (See, for instance, as to the Hocking Valley coal, the papers of Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, Trans., ii., 275, and vii., 313; and as to Indiana "block-coal," the paper of Mr. J. S. Alexander, Trans., i., 225.) Phillips (Elements of Metallurgy, p. 250) says: " Raw coal for blast-furnace use must be of a non-cokiog kind, and, when of suitable quality, is perhaps the most advantageous fuel." In the first

THE motive for merging or consolidation today is conspicuously different from that actuating business men in the late eighties and early nine- ties. Then they combined to secure added productive capacity and to monopolize their respective industries with a view to exploiting the consumer. So flagrant were some of these cases that they brought about their own correctives via retaliation on the part of the public and the subsequent restrictive legislation and legal curbs. The objective of the present-day merger, writes W. R. Hill in Printers' Ink, December, 1927, is summarized as follows : "In the golden days when an industry was being cut to pieces, the prevailing cure was to combine. The reason for such trusts was to strangle competition and by creating a monopoly, dominate the market, raise prices, regardless of economic business methods, and simply force larger profits.

IN ref. 1, on the basis of tension and torsion experiments with single crystals of a brass, the values given in Table I were obtained for elastic coefficients. It was pointed out by Zener that the values for the 71.2 pct Cu were not satisfactory, since they resulted in a negative value for the bulk modulus, namely —4.17X1012 sq cm per dyne. In reevaluating the data of this investigation, it was determined that the reason for this negative bulk modulus lay in the extrapolation of the reciprocal Young's modulus to the zero value of the orientation function shown in Fig. 5 of ref. 1. This extrapolation was reevaluated by the method of least squares (50 pct probability) and a new value of the coefficient S,, was determined as 18.9220.42X 10M sq cm per dyne in lieu of the value originally reported of 18.82x10 sq cm per dyne. This new value of S, leads to a new value of S, of — 9.43 X101" sq cm per dyne. The values of the other coefficients are unchanged. results. This value compares with the value of 12.3X10 sq cm per dyne reported by Schmid and Boas? The new results are summarized in Table 11. These results follow similar qualitative trends, previously published,' relative to the effect of zinc content. However, the derived values of C11, C,, C,, and K are so sensitive to the uncertainty in the first decimal place of the S, values that they are probably not useful. This uncertainty must also apply to the previous results of Masima and Sachs," who obtained S, values from a similar extrapolation drawn wholly above their data points. THE purpose of this investigation was to determine the equilibrium diagram of the lithium-magnesium pair as a first step in studying the possible usefulness of these alloys as ultra-light structural materials. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE The behavior of lithium towards magnesium was first investigated by Masing and Tammann.(I)? In order to prevent oxidation the alloys were made in iron tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen; temperatures were measured with a glass-protected thermocouple. These investigators found that lithium and magnesium form two series of solid solutions separated by a miscibility gap between 85 and 95 per cent magnesium; that the alloys with 81 and 95 per cent magnesium showed a homogeneous structure under microscopic examination, while the alloy with 89 per cent magnesium contained two distinguishable crystallites; that the curve indicating the beginning of crystallization rises from the melting point of lithium to that of magnesium; and that no compounds of lithium and magnesium are formed. The equilibrium diagram was not plotted because no definite data were obtained for determining the solidus and the posi-tion of the miscibility gap in the solid state. The difficulties encountered in this investigation were: (1) that it was necessary to heat them as high as the melting point of magnesium in order to obtain homogeneous melts; at such temperatures the alloys attacked the glass protecting the thermo-couple; and (2) that at temperatures above 400° C. the lithium united

MICA is perhaps our No. 1. strategic mineral problem because of its large requirements in a variety of equipment for use in the military services, and because the principal source of this material has heretofore been British India, a source now threatened partly because of distance and lack of ships. [Block mica and bauxite were added to the "most critical" list published by the W.P.B. on Nov. 6.] No satisfactory substitute has yet been found for most of the uses of mica, which largely involve electrical insulation. Brazil is now our nearest and best major source of this material. No splitting plants have yet been established there but in 1941 we imported about a million pounds of block mica from that country and in 1942 that quantity will be considerably exceeded. In Brazil, mica is found almost exclusively in the pegmatite dikes along the mountain range bordering the eastern part of Minas Gerais. A belt, roughly 180 miles long by 100 miles wide, extends from Theophilo Ottoni to Carangolo. The principal mica-mining districts in this belt are the Governador Valladares area to the north and the Espera Feliz district to the south. The dikes are usually 10 to 50 meters wide and a mile or two long and intrude the old metamorphic schist formation. They are weathered and easily mined.

HIGH GRADE zinc stocks were reported short early in 1943, but not Prime Western. Maximum production of High Grade was expected to be reached before the middle of the year, and demands of new brass mills were to take all of the increase. In February three premiums (A, B, C) of 2 3/4c. per lb. of zinc in ore were announced to encourage production from high-cost mines, the number of premiums being in proportion to estimates of ore-production costs.

The flow characteristics and uniform elongation of alpha-beta titanium alloys in the solution-treated condition were shown to be markedly affected by the solution temperature. Two classes of alpha-beta alloys were distinguished, based on the effect of solution temperature on the uniform elongation. Martensitic alpha-beta alloys, which are relatively weakly beta-stabilized, showed decreasing values of uniform elongation as the solution temperature was initially increased. However, after solution-treatment at still higher temperatures in the alpha-beta field, the uniform elongation of these alloys was again high, and often attained its maximum value. Nonmartensitic alpha-beta alloys, which are more heavily beta-stabilized, showed a continuous decrease of uniform elongation with increasing solution temperature. The behavior was rationalized in terms of the alpha-beta ratio and the alloy content of the beta existing at the solution temperature. The data indicate that in commercial practice close temperature control may be required to get maximum uniform elongotion, and hence, maximum potential formability, in solution-treated sheet. Bend-test data also were obtained for the solution-treated conditions. A MOST important objective of current titanium research is the development of age-hardenable alloys with superior formability in the solution -treated condition. Alpha-beta titanium alloys have been shown to be amenable to high-strength aging treatments after solution-treatment in the alpha-beta field.' However, heat-treatment data on the properties of solution-treated sheet, such as uniform elongation, minimum bend radius, and flow properties, which have a bearing on the potential formability, have not been widely available. This paper presents only the most significant results of a research program conducted at Battelle for the Air Force in an effort to develop sheet alloys that can be formed readily as solution-treated and subsequently aged to very high strengths. Data for 10 compositions representative of the more than 25 alloys studied in this program are presented. A primary objective of the paper is to demonstrate the pronounced dependence of the flow characteristics and uniform elongation on solution-treatment temperature. This effect is believed to be vitally important in the commercial heat-treatment of age-hardenable titanium sheet alloys. Experimental Procedures Melting and Fabrication—The nominal and actual compositions, beta transi temperatures, and rolling temperatures of 10 of the 30 alloys studied are presented in Table I. Stock :€or two of the alloys, E (Ti- 8Mn) and J (Ti-6A1-4V) was obtained from commercial heats. The remaining heats, except D and I, were double melted as 10-lb heats in a consumable-electrode furnace. Melting stock was 120 Brine11 hardness sponge. The oxygen and hydrogen analyses spotted throughout the heats indicate the range of interstitial levels resulting from the melting practice used. Heats D and I were melted as 20-lb ingots with the same grade of sponge. These ingots were cut in half and one portion used in the present evaluation. The ingots, which were about 4 in. diam and 4 in. in height, were upset forged and drawn at 1750°F to sheet bar 5/8 in. thick by 2 1/2 in. wide in such a manner that the top of the ingot corresponded to the top of the sheet bar. Slabs of the sheet bar, 5 1/2 in. in length were scalped to 1/2 in. thickness and rolled at the temperatures indicated in Table I to approximately 0.055 in. sheet. Elongation during rolling took place at 90" to the original forged length. The fabrication procedure used is described in some detail since the experimental heats showed considerable directionality in mechanical properties. The rolling procedures for the commercial heats were unknown, but were such as to produce essentially isotropic properties. All heats, as rolled, showed microstructures typical of alpha-beta alloys worked in the alpha-beta field; that is, the structures consisted of equiaxed alpha particles in a beta matrix. Heat Treatment— The effects of solution and aging heat-treatments on the properties of the alloys were evaluated uSing longitudinal and transverse tensile and bend coupons sheared from the sheet. Two or three solution-treated conditions were evaluated for each alloy. In addition, the alloys were also tested after annealing at 1200°F for 4 hr and furnace cooling. THE extreme effect of the depression on the steel industry is well illustrated by the fact that the amount of iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior district was the lowest in 47 years. Something over 3 1/2 million tons of ore was shipped in 1932, compared with over 65 million tons in 1929. It is not surprising then that practically no advancement in iron ore beneficiation has been made. Improved research and development work, however, was continued at the Michigan College of Mines in the survey of the lean iron ores of Michigan with reference to the possibility of their concentration; at the University of Minnesota in its large-scale jigging studies of Lake :Superior ores; and at Battelle Memorial Institute in the development of improved jigging of iron ores. The successful operation of the new Hadsel mill at a gold property in California gave such low grinding costs on a quartz ore as to give much encouragement in the iron ore industry for a cheapening of the cost of grinding lean ores for concentration.

DEVELOPMENT of complex ores in the south- western part of the Rocky Mountain region has been retarded by the prohibitive distance to the nearest suitable zinc treatment plants. In the north- western and central Rocky Mountains the building, cluring tlie past decade, of electrolytic zinc plants at Anaconda, Great Falls, Trail, and Burke has tremendously stimulated the mining and exploiting of such .ores, greatly increasing the production of lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver. Selective flotation permits the making of high-grade led, copper, and zinc concentrates. If the zinc concentrates could be made free from lead, copper, gold, and silver, they could be shipped economically to Mid- Western retort plants designed for such concentrates. Unfortunately a considerable proportion of the precious metal content accompanies the zinc blende in the ores of this region. Although some of it is saved in 'retort residues, the treatment cost is thereby increased so materially and the proportion saved so small, that .concentrates of ordinary grade cannot stand treatment charges and freight.

J. M. TIPPETT? Colorado Springs, Co1o.-There are several points which offer ground for discussion, although the authors' indicated results leave small chance for argument. Under classification of the ores as they come to the mill, it will be noted that these are classified according to their lime contents. In previous years the classification was based upon sulfur contents, CaO not being considered; class A would be called the oxidized ore and class B the sulfides. Classification according to CaO is the first public indication that a decided change in the ore has necessitated improved methods of treatment. The very serious effect that CaO, even in small quantities, has upon extraction has been noted for some years.
