The southern West Virginia coalfield was formed in a rapidly subsiding depositional basin associated with deep-seated growth faults. Subsidence began to the southeast during deposition of the Pocahontas Formation, and then shifted to the northwest during deposition of the New River, Kanawha, and Allegheny Formations. Rocks of all the coal-bearing formations grade into massive sandstones to the northwest. For the No. 3 Pocahontas, Sewell, Campbells Creek, and No. 5 Block coals discussed in this study, the overall sulfur and ash values of each coal seam increase gradually toward the northwest. The thickness of each coal tends to increase toward the southeast. These trends are partly a reflection of the differential subsidence of the coal basin along with varying degrees of peat accumulation and degradation. The northwest side of the coal swamps underwent relatively less subsidence and, thus, more degradation due to increased aerial exposure, with a resulting increase in the sulfur and ash values of the coals, and a decrease in the thickness. The open sea existed to the west of the coal swamps, and this marine environment also contributed to the higher sulfur values to the northwest. Coals of the Pottsville Group in the southern West Virginia coalfield generally have sulfur values between 0.6-1.0% with some as high as 2-3% on the northwest edge of the coal basin.

Results of a field research project on the thermal recovery of oil by movement of a combustion front are presented. This field test was conducted in the South Belridge field, This The war paitern was a Southsing1e 2.5-acre five-spot pattern in the 700-ft deep Tulare sand. Results of this project indicate the technical feasibility of producing high viscosity, low-grallity crude oils by thermal means. It was demonstrated that heavy oils could be moved rapidly over considerable distances by thermal drive, and that high percentage recoveries of oil could be effected. The bulk of the oil recovery came after arrival of the burning front at a production well. However, rapid corrosion and high-temperature failure of conventional pipe and equipment both below and above surface occurred. Stainless steels gave more satisfectory performance under these conditions than did conventional steels. Oxygen was seldom observed in gas from wells ahead of the burning front, and it appears that the front was continuous throughout the life of the experiment. INTRODUCTION During late 1953 and early 1954, industry-wide attention was focused on the thermal recovery of oil by movement of a combustion front through an oil zone. Two separate Oklahoma field tests were described in publications by Kuhn and Koch, and Grant and Szasz. To obtain basic information needed for making engineering and economic appraisals of commercial recovery of heavy oil by this thermal recovery method, a new field research projecta3,4 was started May 31, 1955. Twelve oil companies contributed to this project with General Petroleum Corp. as operator. Since combustion recovery experiments* with heavy oils in other areas had been conducted in small patterns,"' an important purpose of this test was to determine whether the process could be operated in a pattern of near-commercial well spacing. The south Belridge field, located 30 miles north of Taft, Calif., was chosen because its oil sands are similar to many heavy oil sands which typically have low primary recovery and leave a large amount of oil in place. such fields are not particularly suited for common secondary recovery methods. DESCRIPTION OF TEST SITE The test interval was a Tulare sand at a depth of about 700 ft. Nine test wells were drilled, cored and completed from Oct., 1955, through Jan., 1956. The initial pattern shown on the map, Fig. 1, consisted of an injection well (II)', four producing wells (1P-4P), and four observation wells (IT-4T). An old well (81) was also recompleted for use as an observation well. The area enclosed by the original four production wells was 2.5 acres; the distance from the injection well to each production well was 233 ft. During the combustion period, Well 5P was drilled to replace Well 2P, and Well 6P was drilled to replace Well 3P. The new wells were 25 ft beyond the old production wells along a diagonal from the injection well, and resulted in an increase in pattern area to 2.75 acres. Isopachs are shown in Fig. 1. The average thickness of the oil sand in the test pattern was 30 ft. Fig. 2 presents two cross sections through the test pattern. Oil sand is represented by white and claystone by gray. The dashed lines indicate layers of conglomerate grading to claystone. The sand thickness was fairly uniform throughout the test pattern except in the 1P area. The sand body dips gently from the northwest to southeast, about 3 degrees from horizontal. The sand is unconsoli-dated, and grades from very fine material to pebbles as large as 2 in. in diameter. Table 1 presents the average initial properties of the formation. The in-place porosity of 37 per cent was estimated from the porosity of coke-consolidated cores taken after combustion. A field project to develop and demonstrate a method for alleviating problems of highly mineralized ground water where they occur as isolated zones or pockets in fresh-water aquifers is being conducted in the Ogallala aquifer of eastern New Mexico by the Robert S. Kerr Water Research Center. Removal of contaminated water is by a large-capacity well and the pumped poor-quality water is used locally for secondary recovery of oil. Benefits of the operation are threefold in that the aquifer is being reclaimed for future fresh-water production, contaminated water is being used beneficially, and fresh water which otherwise would have been used for waterflooding is available for other purposes. Ground-water quality in the site has improved markedly after two years of operation. Use of water in the arid and semiarid Southwest has grown so rapidly that demands in many localities far exceed available supplies. In the High Plains region of New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, the only large sources of water are underground reservoirs, being depleted at an alarming rate. In some parts of this region, the aquifers contain pockets of highly mineralized waters; and the mineralized waters in some of them have started spreading in response to the drawdown effects of pumping wells. The aquifers of this region are primarily composed of sand and gravel beds; any cleanup by natural processes will require many tens or even hundreds of years. Most of these pockets of highly mineralized water were caused by oil-field brines seeping downward from earthen disposal pits. Thousands of these pits were in use in the region until only a few years ago when they were prohibited by the oil regulatory agencies of the respective states. The resulting areas of poor quality water are serious enough to warrant much corrective attention. Correction will involve one or more of three approaches: 1) Restrict the pumping of fresh water in the zones where the drawdown of the pumping well will significantly influence the movement of the contaminant. 2) Remove the highly mineralized water entirely from the affected area. 3) Develop and pump the poor-quality water in such a manner that its movement is held in check, even though only a part of the contaminant is actually removed. It included a brief discussion of origin of clays and shales, their composition, structure, retention of water, ionization, base exchange, and the nature of the gelling of water suspensions. Other publications of the Institute2-8 have discussed the properties of clays and their relations to drilling-fluid behavior and control. It is the purpose of this article to present some new data obtained and arranged in a different manner and making possible a better understanding of the chemical reactions involved in the control of drilling-fluid characteristics during the normal drilling operations. Experimental Procedure The difficulties involved in the measurements of the flow characteristics of plastic fluids are too familiar to recite. The possible applications of some of the well-known instruments to this problem have been adequately discussed by Hobson9 and he has given an excellent bibliography. Although there are many viscosimeters of varied design, none of them appear to fulfill the most obvious demands of accuracy in the measurement of clay or shale suspensions. Since the fluid characteristics are dependent on the rate of flow of the fluid, and the viscosity usually falls off very rapidly as the rate is increased, it is clear that the first requirement is that the instrument shall be capable of a wide variety of speeds. The viscosity of the fluid at any fixed and constant rate of flow is also a function of time, so that the second demand is that the instrument shall be capable of a constant and continuous motion for a prolonged period of time.

THE first record of the quarrying of dimension stone in Minnesota dates back to 1820 when limestone was quarried locally for part of old Fort Snelling. Limestone quarries were operated at Stillwater, Mankato, and Winona as early as 1854. Granite was quarried first at St. Cloud in 1868, and within a few years thousands of tons were shipped to widespread points. Rough dimension stone for large buildings furnished the first important market, but beginning in 1886 paving blocks were in demand. The largest shipment was in 1888, when 1925 cars were shipped from the St. Cloud area. Quartzite was quarried first at New Ulm in 1859 and somewhat later at Pipestone and elsewhere in southwestern Minnesota: The productive dolomite quarries at Kasota were opened first in 1868 and have continued as large producers of a variety of stone to the present time. At present, the industry is controlled by relatively few operators, and for that reason detailed figures on dimension stone are not released for publication. A general idea may be obtained from the data in the Minerals Yearbook for 1948. The figures for total stone produced in Minnesota are 1,804,000 tons valued at $5,090,652. Probably the largest item in the latter figure is received from dimension stone. A better idea of the situation, in relation to the country as a whole may be gained by using the data for 1930 when more companies were operating in Minnesota, and complete figures were published. In that year Minnesota produced granite valued at $2,668,119 and ranked third among the states in value. Minnesota's production of granite was almost exclusively for dimension stone. In the same year Minnesota produced 300,000 tons of limestone (dolomite) valued at $840,860, and this likewise was mainly dimension stone. In finished limestone Minnesota ranked second among the states in 1930. Sandstone and minor amounts of quartzite are the only other dimension stones that have been produced in Minnesota, but the quarries are now inactive. The commercial stones of Minnesota have been described in two reports by Bowled and by Thiel and Dutton.2 The early history of quarrying in Minnesota and extensive notes on the various rocks are given by N. H. Winchell.3 Small limestone and dolomite quarries were numerous throughout the area of Paleozoic rocks in southeastern Minnesota. Early production was largely dimension stone. With the increased use of Portland cement, most of these ceased production, and today only those at Kasota and Winona remain in operation. In recent years many quarries have reopened and new ones started, but these are devoted to the production of crushed rock and agricultural lime. As the application of modern quarrying and finishing methods increased, small companies in the granite business have dropped out, and the remaining companies have modernized their plants, purchased old quarries, and opened up new ones, thus furnishing a wide variety of granites suitable for most of the customary uses. It is the purpose of this review to present notes on' the geology and operations of each of the quarries now operating within the state. Granites and Related Igneous Rocks The term granite as used in this report includes granites, gneisses, diorites, gabbros, and other igneous rocks. The granites of greatest economic importance are found in three widely separated regions, see Fig. 1. 1-Central Minnesota in the region of the city of St. Cloud, 2-the upper Minnesota River valley region, 3-the northeastern portion of the state, commonly referred to as the Arrowhead region. The St. Cloud Region: The rocks of the St. Cloud region are mainly granites and related rock types such as monzonites and quartz diorites. The stones may be grouped into three major types, namely, pink granite, red granite and gray granite. Most of the pink granite occurs in the area to the southwest of St. Cloud. The rock is best described as stone with large pink crystals set in a finer grained black and white background. While mining silver at Butte in 1882, Marcus Daly is reputed to have told his partners in The Anaconda Silver Mining Co., "It looks rather gloomy. The vein is running into copper." Recently, The Anaconda Co. authorized an $11 million expenditure to be made over the next five years to ensure their "running into copper" at deep levels for many more years. The new development program is designed to permit both deeper and more widespread selective mining in "the richest hill on earth" by means of additional shaft-sinking, reactivating closed mines, and establishing new haulageways and centralized hoisting facilities. Historically a deep level selective mining camp, Butte will now continue its uncommon use of three main types of mining methods at one camp-selective mining, block caving, and open pit mining. It was thought by some people that the construction of the Kelley shaft and the subsequent beginning of block caving operations in 1952-outgrowth of the Greater Butte Project-signaled the end of stope mining of high-grade ores at depth. This feeling became more pronounced when, in 1957, the Berkeley open pit commenced operations. During recent years, the tonnage of ore mined selectively underground has decreased, but the new program will maintain the position of selective underground mining in the overall picture of the Butte operations for many years to come.

My attention having been called several years ago to the possibility of increasing the yield of coke per ton of coal, as obtained in certain bee-hive ovens, I called the attention of the Institute to the matter at the New York meeting in 1899. I have had occasion since to witness the indifference with which this matter is ordinarily considered, and, on the other hand, the marked improvement which comes from even a most perfunctory effort in that direction; and I am almost tempted to say that nothing in connection with the coking of coal is at present so important. There are other factors, which are fundamental and necessary; but they have been considered already ; while the question of yield is, as a rule, absolutely ignored, or some figure is taken as the result of a special burning of one or two ovens, and the assumption is made that the whole battery is yielding at that rate. The uncertainty of this assumption I may illustrate by saying that, in my own observation, the burning of a single oven in a battery frequently gives, by actual weight, as much as 69 or 70 per cent. of merchantable coke, while the battery as a whole was yielding only an average of 63 per cent. Only from careful records, checked at least once a month, of the weight of the coal going to the ovens and the weight of coke produced, can any correct idea of the actual yield be gained, or methods be modified so as to produce good results; yet, as a rule, the crudest estimates are usually the only available data. In many cases there are reasons for this loose practice. The coal is mined by measurement; the payment for drawing the ovens is in proportion to the amount of cod which goes to them; and, not uncommonly, the royalty is so much a ton of coke, not of coal. The mine-manager is tempted to increase the volume of coal mined which is paid for as a ton, and to do the same thing in charging the ovens. Nor does he

The purpose of the mill tests reported herein, was to determine the relative power efficiency of fast and slow rod mill speeds on the ores of the Tennessee Copper Co. The tests were carried out at the lsabella Mill of the Tennessee Copper Co. under normal operating conditions. Every effort was made to keep the ore supply and other conditions constant, but it will be noted that some slight variation did occur. The open circuit 6 by 9 rod mill, and ore, used in these tests have been previously described.' Four motor drive pinions were available and the tests were performed in the following manner: each pinion was used to drive the mill for a period of one week. Constant sampling prevailed during the test run, and a composite sample for each speed test was made. Realizing that some slight liner wear took place during the four-week test-run, and that some slight variation of the ore may have taken place, a second and then a third series of four-week test- runs were made with the four different pinions. The screen analysis of each of the thee-week run samples at the various speeds were composited and the results are shown in Table 1. The authors feel that the 12 weeks of operation consumed during these test-runs would represent fairly the effect of each mill speed. The data of line 37 show that within the error of sampling and plant operation, the tons of minus 65-mesh material generated per horsepower hour was the same at all four speeds.

Many changes in equipment have had to be made to handle the flotation products at the blast furnace, and these changes have meant an expenditure of considerable money, which has not been compensated by an increase in smelting tonnage. To date, very few new lead mines have been developed, so that the help derived by the innovation of flotation has been directed to old producing properties, where the ratio of concentration is greater now than when gravity concentration was in effect. In some smelting plants there has been an abandonment of complete units due to the introduction of flotation. Flotation Products Difficult to Handle The physical characteristics of the flotation product do not make for economic handling for lead blast-furnace work, either mechanically or metallurgically. The millman or miner do not know what trials and tribulations they have passed on to the smelterman. To the smelterman it is "the everchanging flotation," for little does he know what new reagent will be perfected tomorrow that may completely change the grade and physical characteristics of the product. Even the mining companies who have complete units of mining, milling and smelting have had a hard time to reconcile themselves to the fact that the unit cost per ton of ore smelted must go up with the increase of flotation product on the blast-furnace charge. The "smelterman's burden," for that is what flotation has been for the last few years, has not caused the smelter operator to lag or fall down, but has spurred him on with new zeal. The physical properties of the flotation products are as follows: (1) High moisture content; (2) mucky nature of product; (3) fineness of product, and (4) high metal content. New Mechanical Devices for Handling Furnace Product These characteristics have caused the use of many new mechanical devices in smelting practice, for example: New transportation equipment, such as solid-bottom cars, is required; unloading equipment and sampling

PrePatory Note.—The first part of this paper was sent to me by Mr. Emrich nearly nine months ago; and I held it, waiting for the second part, which he had promised to forward soon, so that I might submit the whole to some of his former professional associates, and advise him of their criticisms and suggestions before off'ering his work to the Institute. But, five days before the second part reached me, I received by telegraph the news of Mr. Emrich's sudden death. The paper has therefore not had the benefit of such a revision by the author as might have made it ill some respects clearer and more cornplete. Nevertheless, I believe that experts in the branch of metallurgy with which it deals will find it both original and suggestive.—A. Eilers. I. Partial ReFining iN the ANode-Furnace. During my connection with one of the large New Jersey copper-refineries, and probably before that period, from 15 to 30 per cent. of the copper-bullion received was the very foul, leady blister-copper produced from lead blast-furuace matte. It had been customary to mix a small part of this blister with each charge of purer pig-copper, in the effort to dilute it as much as possible before casting into anodes; but tank-house conditions were such that I was led to try making entire furnace-charges of this blister, and refining it as much as possible in the furnace—afterwards casting to anodes and refining elec-trolytically, in tanks and solution separate from the main bulk of the purer copper. In making this experiment, notes were made, for several furnace-charges, of everything thought to have a bearing on the question, and some interesting facts were brought out, both in the furnace-working and afterwards in the tanks.

Over the past ten years a series of investigations have been conducted to determine some of the pnysical processes involved in breaking rock with confined concentrated charges. Detailed discussions of many of these investigations have been published elsewhere.1-6 Laboratory experiments made by other investigators using Hopkinson pressure-bar techniques have shown that solid materials are fractured in tension by the reflection of an incident compressive stress pulse at a free surface.7-12 In these tests a small charge of explosive is placed in contact with one end of a bar. Detonation produces some plastic flow and crushing of the bar near the charge and generates a compressive stress pulse that travels along the length of the bar. At the free end of the bar the compressive stress pulse is reflected back into the bar as a tensile stress pulse. If the tensile strength of the bar is exceeded during this reflection process, a tensile fracture normal to the length of the bar is produced, and the broken end of the bar moves forward with a constant velocity equal to the average particle velocity trapped in the broken fragment. The new surface formed by the fracture becomes the new free end of the bar that reflects the remaining portion of the incident compressive stress pulse. This process is repeated any number of times until all of the incident stress pulse is reflected. Hino has demonstrated this kind of breakage for three rock types—marble, granite, and sandstone." He has defined a blastibility coefficient, B, as the ratio of compressive strength, C, to tensile strength, T, thus: C The quantity B is the maximum number of slabs that can be produced by reflection breakage. Normally fewer slabs are produced because of loss of energy as the stress pulse travels through the rock. Fig. 1 illustrates reflection-type fracture for a triangular compressive stress pulse. The number of slabs produced by the reflection breakage process is the first whole number less than the ratio of the peak stress of the incident pulse to the tensile breaking stress of the solid. Thus the number of slabs is given by the thickness of each slab is given by and the total length of rock broken is given by N = number of slabs S - peak stress in incident pulse T = tensile strength of the rock F = fall length of incident stress pulse h = thickness of each slab D = total length of rock broken During the reflection process the particle velocity at the free surface is twice the particle velocity in the incident stress pulse. Thus the velocity with which the broken fragments move forward is given by where v, = velocity of broken fragment, and v = average particle velocity contained in that portion of the incident pulse trapped in the broken fragment. Results of these laboratory experiments cannot be applied directly to rock blasting where the explosive charge is placed in a drillhole. In laboratory tests the charge is unconfined and in contact with the rock in only one direction. In a drillhole additional confinement is offered by the rock surrounding the charge and by the stemming placed above it. This additional confinement may be enough to allow the explosive gases to do additional work on the rock during their expansion. Other writers have discussed possible effects of gas expansion'on rock breakage.13-10 However, very few experimental data are available to determine to what extent expansion of the gases is responsible for rock fragmentation. The USBM has studied the physical processes involved in breaking rock with confined concentrated charges by using simple crater tests breaking to one free surface. Crater tests have been performed in four rock types: granite, sandstone, marlstone, and chalk. Table I gives some physical properties of these rocks. Fig. 2 shows plan and section drawings of two typical crater tests and illustrates some of the test variables measured. For these tests the charge was placed at the bottom of the drillhole and primed with an electric cap. The hole was stemmed to the collar with sand and the charge detonated. Various studies have estimated that for the next few decades, about half of all new power plants will be nuclear. The other half will be fueled with coal. Pending legislation on air pollution control would require all new coal-fueled power plants to install stack gas scrubbers or other technology to reduce sulfur oxide (SO,) emissions. These regulations would require flue gas desulfurization (FGD) or other technology for SO, reduction even on lower sulfur western coals. Among the options for FGD are single or dual alkali throw away processes using lime or limestone as the major reagent. These processes are currently more economically attractive than recovery processes, such as magnesium oxide and Wellman- Lord, that produce a salable product such as sulfur or sulfuric acid. One of the major problem areas with the throw away processes is disposal of the thrown away solid wastes, primarily calcium sulfite (CaSO3) and calcium sulfate (CaS04). Coal ash also must be disposed of, even if SOx reduction is not required. This paper addresses the alternatives for handling and disposal of throw away lime, limestone, and dual alkali process solid wastes. Advantages, disadvantages, and the economics of various methods are discussed. Both large central station power plants (500-1000 MW capacity) and smaller industrial power plants (up to 100 MW capacity) are considered. High sulfur eastern coals (53% S) and lower sulfur (3 1% S) western coals are considered.

The conventional wire saw, introduced in the slate district of Pennsylvania by the Bureau of Mines in 1927, and used thereafter with remarkable success, consists of a three-strand steel cable having a diameter of 93/16 or 54 in. The equipment, methods used, and accomplishments have been described in previous reports.'-I Similar wire saws have been used extensively in Europe, in quarries and in shaping blocks and slabs. During the period 1932-1937, competition in European marble quarries was keen, prices were declining, and orders were not abundant. When orders were received, there was generally an urgent call for speedy delivery. Because of the diversification of demands, it was impossible to maintain in stock marbles of the color, size, and thickness called for, therefore the material generally had to be fabricated after the order was received. The wire saw enabled stone mills to fill such orders promptly. With skillful handling, 7/8-in. slabs could be cut accurately and rapidly with this equipment. It was found, however, that, as the three-strand wire became worn, the cutting speed dropped rapidly and the cut became less accurate. To overcome these difficulties the junior author of this paper, after much experimentation, developed a new type of wire consisting of a single ribbon-shaped strand, twisted as shown in Fig. I. To ensure straight sawing, the twist of the ribbon is reversed from right to left and vice versa every 25 ft. The reversal of the twist is shown in Fig. 2. This is not a new feature; it has been used to advantage with the three-strand wire both in Europe and America for several years. The conventional wire saw, introduced in the slate district of Pennsylvania by the Bureau of Mines in 1927, and used thereafter with remarkable success, consists of a three-strand steel cable having a diameter of 93/16 or 54 in. The equipment, methods used, and accomplishments have been described in previous reports.'-I Similar wire saws have been used extensively in Europe, in quarries and in shaping blocks and slabs. During the period 1932-1937, competition in European marble quarries was keen, prices were declining, and orders were not abundant. When orders were received, there was generally an urgent call for speedy delivery. Because of the diversification of demands, it was impossible to maintain in stock marbles of the color, size, and thickness called for, therefore the material generally had to be fabricated after the order was received. The wire saw enabled stone mills to fill such orders promptly. With skillful handling, 7/8-in. slabs could be cut accurately and rapidly with this equipment. It was found, however, that, as the three-strand wire became worn, the cutting speed dropped rapidly and the cut became less accurate. To overcome these difficulties the junior author of this paper, after much experimentation, developed a new type of wire consisting of a single ribbon-shaped strand, twisted as shown in Fig. I. To ensure straight sawing, the twist of the ribbon is reversed from right to left and vice versa every 25 ft. The reversal of the twist is shown in Fig. 2. THE rate of output of a rock crusher is based upon a certain space relation, the calculation requiring that the size and position of the jaws, the principle of motion, and the speed of the machine be known. The result is a calculated maximum output. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of calculating this maximum output, to judge the general applicability A utility of such a calculation, and, so far as possible, to record calculated values as a basis for the comparison of actual results, or for estimating the capacity of a new crusher or of a standard crusher working under new conditions. A method for calculating the capacity of crushing rolls, which has been in common use for a long time, is well presented by R. H. Richards.1 The output is conceived as a ribbon of rock, of which the breadth, thickness and length are governed respectively by the width of the rolls, the space, between them, and their peripheral velocity. The weight of the rock thus crushed in a given time can be calculated from its specific gravity, after applying a factor representing the percentage of voids in the hypothetical ribbon. The calculation of crusher capacity is made in a somewhat similar manner. While the action of rolls is simple, with few irregularities in operating conditions, in rock crushers the material advances intermittently, usually under the force of gravity alone, and is subjected to a variety of variable conditions. The effect of these variable influences upon' the calculation of capacity is now to be shown. In this paper, capacity will be discussed quite apart from any consideration of mechanical efficiency; that is, results will be stated not in terms of output per horsepower, but of output for a given machine when operated at a known speed, constructed and adjusted to receive material of a known size, and to yield a product having a definite maximum coarseness.

THE mines of the United States Coal & Coke Co. are located in the Pocahontas coal field, in McDowell County, West Virginia. Twelve plants have been opened and equipped, of which, by reason of the present business depression, only nine are now in operation. These twelve plants serve eighteen mines; some of the plants having several openings, in either the same seam or in different seams, tributary to the same tipple. Only nine of these mines are now being worked at the plants in operation. Construction work was begun in 1902, and coal from the first three plants started was shipped in December of that year. An additional plant was opened in 1903, two in 1904, two in 1905, two in 1907 and the last two in 1908. On Jan. 1, 1915, the plants have been in operation an average period of 8.8 years. The rules of the company, which have been in operation since work was first begun, are similar to those in use by the H. C. Frick Coke Co. at its mines in Pennsylvania, in which "Safety First" was incorporated as early as 1907; and it has always been the policy of both companies to look carefully after the safety of their employees. Although the field is an extension of the old Pocahontas field, the mines, located upon a new branch railroad, are away by themselves, and, as is usual in such cases, the class of labor attracted at first was temporary in character. The rapid development of the mines required the employment of many new men and officials each year; and, while the accident record from 1904 to 1909 was as good as the average of the field, it was felt to be not as good as it could be made, and a determined campaign was inaugurated for preventing accidents of all kinds. Fig. .1 shows the tonnage of coal produced per fatality, both total and for inside accidents only, at our mines; the tonnage per fatality of all West Virginia mines, and of those in the Pocahontas field.

AT a joint meeting of the Tulsa Geological Society and the Mid-Continent Section of the A; I. M. E., held at Tulsa on March 21, the history of unit development in the Kettle- man Hills field was discussed. Robert C. Patterson? Super- visor for the U. S. Geological Survey at Taft, Calif., was the speaker. An abstract of some of his remarks follows: On July 1, 1923, curtailment agreement for two years was made between the operators of North Dome Kettleman and the U. S. Department of the Interior. In this it was agreed to consider a plan of unit development, or other cooperate method of developing the structure. As a result, Kettleman North Dome Association was incorporated in December, 1930, as a non-profit cooperative corporation under the laws of California. Approved in January, 1931, by California Oil and Gas Supervisor and by Secretary of Interior. On Feb. 10, 1931, it became an active organization through election of executive officers and eleven- directors. General manager chosen. Association started to function April 1, 1931. Assumed control of 10,800 acres of proved and semi-proved land, as shown in Table 1.
