Thermodynmic properties of the Cu-Mn system have been deterrrzined in the temperature range 973" to 1273°K by measuring the vapor pressure of manganese in equilibrium with alloys of compositions varying from 0.13 to 0.91 rnole fraction manganese using the Knudsen effusion technique. Activities of manganese calculated from the measured vapor pressures show large positive deviations. Calculated heats and entropies of mixing are positive with a maximum occurring at approximately 0. 7 mole fraction manganese. ThE investigation of thermodynamic properties of binary systems involving transition metals is of considerable interest at the present time. The incomplete subvalency electron levels of transition metals lead to unusual behavior in some alloys, and considerable information can be obtained by determining the thermodynamic characteristics of these systems and relating the thermodynamic behavior to observed physical properties. The Cu-Mn system, shown in Fig. 1,' provides an example of an alloy system in which the determination of the equilibrium phase diagram and various physical properties has received considerable attention, but very little work has been done on measurement of the thermodynamic properties. Elemental copper and manganese have comparable electronegatives, atomic sizes, and cohesive energies, but differ in crystal structure. They form a continuous series of solid solutions only at high temperatures and the structure varies in a continuous manner from fcc at the copper-rich end to fct at the manganese-rich end.' The purpose of this investigation was to measure the vapor pressure of manganese over a series of Cu-Mn alloys and from these values determine the thermodynamic properties of the binary system. Vapor pressure measurements were made in the temperature range 973" to 1273"K, remaining within the solid-solution region for each alloy studied. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The relative thermodynamic properties of solid Cu-Mn alloys were determined from vapor pressure measurements by means of the Knudsen effusion tech- nique. Several discussions of the theory can be found in the literature. In the case of copper and manganese, it is assumed that manganese is the only component subliming, so the vapor pressure of manganese over the various alloys can be determined directly by measuring the weight loss of the effusion cell. This is a valid assumption since the vapor pressure of manganese is about four orders of magnitude higher than the vapor pressure of copper in the temperature region of interest. The vapor pressure of manganese over the alloys at any given temperature is then related to the weight loss of the effusion cell per unit area per unit time. An upper limit of 1.5 x 10"s has been measured for the ratio of polyatomic to monoatomic molecules for manganese vapor in equilibrium with solid manganese at 1180°K, so it was assumed that manganese vapor is monoatomic. The effusion cells, fabricated from high-purity alumina, are 26 mm high, 18 mm OD, and have a wall thickness of 1 mm. Three different sized holes of 2.03, 2.54, and 3.18 mm diam were drilled in the lids from the inside face to minimize chipping, and the lids were then slip-cast onto the cells to provide a gas-tight seal. Alumina was selected for this particular application both because of its resistance to thermal shock and reaction with manganese vapor. The four new oil-field discoveries made in the East and East Central Texas districts during 1941 were the East Long Lake field, Anderson County; Pickering field, Shelby County; Pleasant Grove field, Rusk County, and Tri-Cities field, Henderson County. The discovery of oil production in the Pettit lime of the Lower Glen Rose was made in the Groesbeck (Barron) field in Limestone County and the Willow Springs field in Gregg County. Important extensions were made to the Pittsburg field, in Camp County, the Chapel Hill field, in Smith County, and the Hawkins field, in Wood County. The Hawkins field was extended sufficiently to more than double the number of proved surface acres. As usual the East Texas field led the district in the number of completions for the year. The second most active field during the year was the Hawkins field, with 250 new wells completed. The third most active was the Long Lake field, in which 50 wells were completed. Approximately 964 wells were completed in the district during 1941. Production and Probation The district is credited with having produced 163,566,695 bbl. of oil and distillate during the year. This represents a decrease of 4 per cent from the 170,424,685 bbl. of oil and distillate produced during the preceding year. The production of 130,378,620 bbl. of oil and distillate from the East Texas field represents 79.7 per cent of the total production of the district; that is, 6.3 per cent less than the production for the year 1940, The district had an estimated basic daily allowable of 614,982 bbl. of oil on Dec. 31. Approximately 33 per cent of the state's annual production was produced in the district, compared with 34.9 per cent for 1940. Since the majority of the fields in this district are subject to proration, any change in the annual production is attributable largely to changes in proration schedules and number of shutdown days. Fields subject to shutdown days were closed in for 113 days during the year, with the exception of the East Texas field, which was shut down 111 days. An order was promulgated by the Oil and Gas Division of the Texas Railroad Commission for encouraging the disposal of salt water and reservoir-pressure maintenance in the East Texas field. Discoveries Tex Harvey Oil Company'sNo. I S. E. J. Cartmel was completed as the discovery well for the East Long Lake field, Anderson County. The apparent activation energy, U, JOY plastic deformation of aluminium, copper, and gold single crystals and polycrystalline aluminum was found to he dependent upon surface condition. At low strains, the value for U for aluminum single crystals was 4200 cal per mole ; however, this value decreased to 920 cal per mole when the specimens were polished during the test at a rate of 50 X 10-5 win-1 The activated volume also was found to increase with the rate of metal removal. That the surface plays an important role in plastic-deformation processes has been adequately demonstrated.1-4 Of particular interest at this time are the observations4 that the creep rate of single crystals of fee metals is increased markedly when specimens are polished during the deformation process. These observations were interpreted in terms of a dislocation debris layer at the surface regions of the crystal. This layer, which appears to be a region containing a high concentration of dislocations or segments of dislocations, not only will impede the egress of dislocations on the primary slip system, but will also provide a barrier against which dislocations may pile up. By this means, a stress which opposes the motion of dislocations will be generated. It is considered that this stress must be taken into account in any theory which describes the plastic-deformation process. Although a detailed dislocation model cannot be given at this time, it may be stated that the stresses opposing the motion of dislocations arise from the dislocations in the debris layer, Ts, and ti due to the resistance to motion imposed by internal obstacles such as Lomer-Cottrell barriers, subgrain and grain boundaries, forest dislocations, and so forth, as well as the resistance due to the presence of jogs on dislocations and the interaction of the stress fields of dislocations, and so forth. In essence, we have added an additional term, ts, to the usual form of the equation T = Ta- Tb, where Tb is the back stress due to the various types of obstacles which impede the motion of dislocation. Accordingly, the net stress, t, acting on a dislocation may be written as where Ta is the applied shear stress. For deformation which occurs by a thermally activated process5,8 ?=Ae-u/kT = A e(u,-VT)/kT [2] and U = Uo- Vt PI where U = activation energy for plastic flow, y = shear strain rate, Uo = activated energy for plastic deformation in the absence of stress and depends upon the particular deformation process, V = activated volume, k = Boltzmann constant, T = temperature, OK, and A = frequency factor. From Eqs. [I] and [3], U = Uo- V(Ta - Ti - TS) [4] and it is seen that if Ts decreases, the activation energy, U, must decrease if V remains constant. However, as will be shown, V is a function of the surface conditions. In their work on aluminum, Lytton and coworkers7 reported that at low strains the activation energy was 3400 cal per mole and at high strains it was 28,000 cal per mole. The lower value was interpreted in terms of the energy necessary to overcome the Peierls force, while the higher value was associated with the energy necessary for dislocations to move by a cross-slip process. It will be shown that the lower activation energy is associated with the surface debris layer rather than with the Peierls force. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals having a nominal cross section of 1/8 in. and a 3-in. gage length were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique using a multiple-cavity graphite mold. The initial purity of the metals was 99.997, 99.999, and 99.999 pet for aluminum, copper, and gold, respectively. The orientation of the specimens is given in Fig. 1. THe present methods of unloading ore and coarse-crushing at the Magna plant of the Utah Copper Co. are the developments of the pas five years. Hand dumping and breaking have given way to the rotary car dump and large gyratory; and the bucket elevators and stationary screens have been replaced by conveyors and shaking screens. The coarse-crushing plant may be broadly divided into two units the primary crushing and the secondary crushing, or primary roll, unit The former was erected in 1923; with the exception of the excavation the construction was carried on by forces of the company. Excavation was started in the middle of March, the first concrete was poured July 16, erection of the steel building started Oct. 30, and the unit was com pleted and operating Dec. 30. The unit has a capacity of over 24,001 tons of ore per day, and cost more than a million dollars. Remodeling of the primary-roll unit extended over a period of years preceding this some of the work having been done as early as 1918. Delivery of Ore from Mine, Yard Storage, and Handling Ori Cars to and from Primary Crushing Plant The ore is transported, in steel cars of 80 tons capacity, from the min' to the mill, where a reserve tonnage of loaded cars is maintained. Malle locomotives, handling trains of 45 cars, or approximately 3600 tons o ore per train, deliver the trains to a storage yard which contains thre tracks—a passing track and two storage tracks. All of this trackage i equipped with an overhead trolley system, so that electric locomotive can be used in yard switching. The storage tracks have a total length of 4500 ft. and provide storag space for 140 cars. The passing track, besides permitting switchin room for locomotives, is used for storage purposes between train arrivals thus giving intermittently a total storage capacity for the yard of approxi mately 200 cars. IT is no longer necessary, if it ever was, for your annual lecturer to apologize for including in his remarks frequent references to the arrange-ment of metal atoms in crystals and for basing his arguments that metals behave as they do upon their crystal structure. Neither will any objec-tion be raised because the large metallic crystals of which we will speak are hard to prepare and of negligible commercial interest. The particular set of physical properties we propose to discuss-ferromagnetic proper-ties-may require more justification. Very few in this audience are primarily, or even remotely, interested in the ferromagnetic behavior of the metals they handle. By no means all of you ever deal, by choice or by necessity, with metals which display any ferromagnetism at all, and even those who study or control ferrous metallurgy must usually depend upon electrical engineers for assistance in ferromagnetic applications. My excuse for talking about such an obvious specialty is, like all Gaul, divided into three parts. In the first place, the members of the com-mittee who select the annual lecturer must wish the speaker to confine himself to matters he has at least thought about before he prepares his speech. In the second place, the study of ferromagnetism in crystals has, as you will soon realize, suffered in the not-too-distant past from inade-quate metallurgy. Further progress probably depends upon proper use being made of the skill and knowledge of some members of the Institute of Metals Division who have not, before today, been asked to think about the problems presented here. Finally, there is at least a sporting chance that the ferromagnetic properties of a few metal crystals will give some insight into the more generally interesting properties which they share with nonferromagnetic metal crystals.

A large-scale water-injection program for the Holt Bryant reservoir of the Delhi field has been established by means of the new automatic multi-pool analyzer. The objectives of this program were to increase reservoir pressure and eliminate a cross-dip gradient of 200 psi. Pressure increases during the first 15 months of operation have allowed for increased oil production rates of 2,600 BID or 25 per cent. To determine the required water injection it was necessary to predict natural water influx ram. Elimination of the pressure gradients required the water-injection program to account for the fluid migration and pressure interaction between segments of the reservoir. An integral part of the ana1ysis included the determination of in-place volumes of oil and gas. The operation of the automatic multi-pool analyzer in determining the water-injection program is described. New features of the analyzer inc1ude an automatic maferial balance analog and a leart-squares computer for determination of unknown reservoir properties. Operational procedures are sufficiently simple to allow direct use by reservoir engineers on a routine basis. The rapidity and accuracy with which problems may be solved permit repeated ana1yses as a check upon reservoir performance. INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a new analog com- puter in determining the optimum injection program for a complex reservoir. The Holt-Bryant (Fig. 1) is the major reservoir in the Delhi field of Louisiana. Production is from the Tuscaloosa at subsea depths of 2,970 to 3,286 ft. The sand dips to the south and southwest from three to five degrees. The reservoir is approximately 12 miles long and varies in width from 1/2 to 2 miles. Various calculations have placed the initial volume of oil in-place in the wide range of 275 to 355 million STB. Two small gas caps were initially present in the reservoir. The Holt-Bryant reservoir was discovered in Dec.. 1944, and was fully developed with 188 producing wells by 1948. CERTAIN dusts are dangerous when inhaled, but most hazardous of all dusts are quartz or other forms of pure crystalline silica. The inhalation of dusts containing silica in combination with other elements gives rise to changes in the lung which differ from those produced by pure silica. As a generality, silicates are less dangerous than pure crystalline silica and vary greatly among themselves in harmfulness. Repeated analyses have shown that approximately 70 per cent of the total number of particles involved in any dust-producing operation are below 1 to 2 microns in diameter. (A micron is. approximately 1/25,000 in.) Similar studies of dusts recovered from silicotic lungs post mortem have demonstrated essentially the same size frequency distribu-tion, except that the upper limit of size retained in the air sacs is approxi-mately 10 microns. Experiments carried on by Gardner and the author have further demonstrated that greater changes were produced by a fixed weight of very fine quartz particles (2 to 3 microns and smaller) than by the same weight of slightly larger particles (8 to 10 microns). Any attempt to control a dust hazard should therefore be directed toward the removal from the working atmosphere of particles less than 10 microns in size, and particularly those below 3 microns. All industrial hygienists agree on this matter, but there remains considerable dispute as to the lower limit of particle size capable of causing injury. It has been gen-erally conceded, however, that particles of harmful dusts smaller than ¼ to ½ micron are not essentially concerned in the development of pulmonary fibrosis. This opinion is partly substantiated by the existence of large numbers of these small particles in practically all atmospheres that are, not associated with any known hazard. Such particles are so small that they have very little mass, fail to settle even in quiet air, and probably are not easily retained in the lung. Until further research proves that they are involved in the dangers provoked by the inhalation of certain dusts, engineers will generally agree that it is better to dis-regard them.

Metallurgical processes cannot be conducted successfully With out the aid of analytical chemistry. The great perfection of Iead smelting in the West, for instance, has only been accomplished by the analysis of ores, fluxes, slags and all products of the furnace. Ores are mixed and fluxed to obtain a slag of desired composition. Account is even taken of the composition of the ashes obtained from the coke. The " muscular " smelter has left the field forever! This state of affairs has been induced by sharp competition, i.e., by a com plete separation of the industries of mining and reducing ores, not by the liberality and wisdom of directors and stockholders to pro vide laboratories and engage chemists, or by their love for scientific investigation. It would be considered absurd, at present, to run a lead-smelter, a blast-furnace for pig-iron, or a Bessemer plant without the assist ance of a well-equipped laboratory and a chemist; but it is con sidered quite sufficient to provide amalgamation- or lixiviation works merely with a crude assay-office, and an assayer who is paid less than a laborer in the mill. In my opinion, this will change in the near future. By the ex clusion of Mexican lead-ores, and their growiring scarcity in the West, smelters have been forced to raise their charges on so-called dry silver-ores, and cannot handle the latter now in such unlimited quantities as formerly. The inevitable result must be that the sur plus of these dry silver-ores, especially those of low grade, will be reduced by processes cheaper than smelbing; and here the introduc tion of lixiviation has an excellent field, provided the muscular lixiviator has an able chemist for an assistant. It is to be regretted that so little analytical work has been done in lixiviation. We know almost nothing of the composition of roasted ores before and after lixiviation; of the constitution of the first wash water and of lixiviation-solutions after prolonged use; of the chemistry of sodium and calcium sulphides; of the col-hposition

Although some of the observers who first paid especial attention to the occurrences of oil and gas in the strata (such as Hunt in 1859, Andrews in 1861; Winchell in 1865, Mendelejeff in 1876, Höfer in 1876, Minshall in 1881, and I. C. White in 1883) seem to have been impressed with the fact that oil and gas deposits were connected with the disturbances in the rocks caused by their upheavalll yet, with the exception of Mendelejeff, and possibly Andrews, these observers do not appear to have understood what is really the one essential factor in the occurrence of oil and gas in the strata: viz., the faulting, uplifting, fracturing, fis-suring, and jointing always accompanying even slight rock disturbances, and in certain districts (petroliferous provinces)2 allowing solfataric hydrocarbon emanations to force their way up from the interior and to reach and impregnate the porous portions of sediments subjected to the disturbances. Instead of this simple explanation to account -for the observed connection between petroleum deposits and rock disturbances, most of the observers mentioned above, and many others who have foliowed them on the same lines since, have entirely reversed the problem. To them, instead of the dissemination of gases from fissures into the sediments, it presented the accumulation and concentration, according to anticlinal or other geologic structures, of oil and gas originally present throughout the whole mass of the strata where they were produced by the decomposition or distillation of organic remains. Whether this important problem involves accumulation from sources within the strata themselves, or infiltration and dissemination from outside sources, may be easily determined if all preconceived ideas are put aside and the established facts only are considered. THE Isley furnace control, here presented as a novelty in furnace construction, is, in principle, one of the oldest methods of maintaining furnace heat for industrial purposes. Records unearthed in Egyptian tombs and the primitive methods of melting metal practiced by African tribes today indicate that fanning the fire and forcing the furnace by bellows have been an effective means of regulating heat for man's work during thousands of years. Even today, these cruder forms of mechanical draft production are still nn use within the borders of this most highly developed industrial land. Stacks, as we know them, are of com- paratively recent historical age but their attractive simplicity and seeming effectiveness have made them exceedingly popular. And so we find one of the most important types of furnace the world has even known, the open-hearth furnace, duly and more or less properly equipped with a chimney. The regenerative, or reversing, type of furnace, how-ever, required another mechanism between its hearth and the stack to provide a means for alternately con-necting one side and the other of its system of regen-erative chambers and flues to the stack and to a source of fuel and air supply respectively. Various types of reversing valves were developed, some of which are re-markably well designed for maximum efficiency and ease of installation as well as operation. However, this combination has a number of inherent faults which are so difficult to correct as to make efforts in the direction of improving over-all efficiency almost futile. These inherent difficulties are as follows: (1) The necessarily high temperature at which the gases must be delivered to the stack in order to make it operative. (2) The great temperature difference incidental to the reversal of flue gas and air and consequently the large variation in preheated air and fuel delivered to the furnace dur-ing the cycle. (3) The leakages and resistances created by the reversing apparatus and the complicated flues necessary. (4) The inadequate range of control af-forded by the natural draft system, especially under adverse atmospheric conditions.

Discussion of the paper of FRANKLIN MOELLER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 343 to 354. K. A. PAULY, Schenectady, N. Y.-I read with interest Mr. Moeller's paper descriptive of the mechanical parts of the new electric hoist at the Granite Shaft of the North Butte Mining Co. and as the paper treats largely of the mechanical equipment I have little discussion to offer. There is, however, one question which I would like to ask and that is, why the discrepancy in hoisting cycles between the curves given in the paper read by Mr. Sykes for the American Institue of Electrical Engineers at San Francisco and those given in the paper under discussion? In Mr. Sykes' curves the acceleration period is shown to be 16 sec. for all depths from 2,000 to 4,000 ft. inclusive, while Mr. Moeller in Fig. 2 shows 25 sec. throughout the range and in Fig. 4 shows 35 sec. Measurements of the effect of precipitation stresses on the solubility of cementite (Fe3C) precipitates in a iron are reported. Solubilities were determined from measurements of the Snoek relaxation due to interstitial carbon after quenching from various equilibrium treatments. Stress-free precipitates were obtained by a spheroidizing treatment of vacuum-melted Fe 0.06 wt pet C. Subsequent equilibration treatments were designed to suppress nucleation of other precipitates. The results for stress-free cementite give a heat of solution of 14.8 i 0.2 keal per mole and an entropy change of 1.1 i 0.2 eu in the temperature range 400" to 715°C. Comparison with previous data indicates that the heat of solution increases about 6 keal per mole as temperature increases from 700" to 1000°C. Data on self-stressed cementite in quench-aged specimens of Fe 0.013 wt pet C indicate 1) an apparent heat of solution of 12.1 i 0.4 keal per mole in the range 280" to 690°C, 2) a strain energy of- 1.1 keal per mole Fe3C accompanying precipitation at 280°C, and 3') a gradual decrease in the strain energy of precipitation with increasing equilibration temperature. In com-parison with 2 and 3 the strain energy calculated for an isotropic model is 1.7 keal per mole Fe3C. The lower values obtained from the experiment indicated substantial stress velaxation by dislocation motion. WHEN a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron is aged at temperatures in the range 200o to 700oC, the carbon clusters by interstitial diffusion and forms cementite (Fe3C) precipitate particles. Unstressed cementite has a volume per iron atom 9 pet higher than that of a iron;' hence, cementite precipitate particles are usually under pressure from the iron matrix. The pressure would tend to increase the solubility of cementite in iron.' This report describes anelastic measurements of the solubilities of self-stressed and stress-free cementite in a iron. Previous determinations of the cementite solubility are summarized in Table I. The method of cementite formation for each reference was studied to ascertain the state of stress of the cementite. The results judged to be for stress-free and stressed cementite are distinguished in the table. In the next section an estimate of the stress effect is obtained which is clearly too small to account for the large difference between the previous results in parts A and B of the table. THEORETICAL Let AGO be the standard free-energy change of the reaction Fe3C (eem.) = 3Fe (a) + C (in a) [1] in the absence of stresses. Since cementite precipitates appear to be rather pure10 and the carbon is so dilute in the iron,8 the cementite and iron of Eq. [ I] for the stress-free case have essentially unit activities and the activity of carbon equals its atom fraction xoC Then the stress-free equilibrium is expressed by RT In XoC = -?GO 121 To first approximation the change in the chemical potential of carbon due to the precipitation stresses equals the elastic strain energy W accompanying precipitation of a mole of cementite.2 Hence, in the presence of the precipitation stresses the equilibrium is described by RT In x sq = -?G° + W [3] where xsC is the mole fraction of dissolved carbon in the stressed case. An approximate value of W can be obtained from analysis of the inclusion problem in elasticity theory. The inclusion is a small portion of the matrix phase which has suffered a transformation while still imbedded in the matrix. In the absence of the constraint of the matrix the transformation would be equivalent to a uniform dilational strain eT. Both the matrix (a) phase and inclusion (0) phase are assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic materials. When the a and 0 phases have the same elastic moduli, which is approximately true for iron and cementite,11 the total strain energy per mole ß is12 2µVß(eT)2(3 +4 µx)-I [4]

Va.-How near the size of the sand can the coal to be treated be brought? Do you use an 8-mesh coal on that cleaner? J. J. RUTLEDGE, Baltimore, Md.-From the little I have seen of the apparatus in operation, I should say 8-mesh. In my experience in metalmine concentration work, trying to separate different minerals on one jig, sometimes I have succeeded and sometimes not. This apparatus has appealed to me; something of this kind should be useful with the silicates and carbonates of zinc. I think this apparatus has possibilities in metal mining. Recently in our coal field a screen has been introduced for cleaning coal; it is giving excellent service. When I asked the inventor why he did not take it to the metal mines, he said there was a good and sufficient reason, in a patent way. There may be reasons why it would not be applicable for metal mining; but the simplicity of it appeals to me and I cannot see why it could not be so used. T. FRASER (written discussion).-We feel that 8-mesh would be about -the minimum size of coal practicable to treat by the air-sand process. This would depend partly upon the friability of the coal. The more nearly the lower size limits of the coal- approaches the size of the sand, the more .time will be required in screening the sand out of the cleaned coal, which would mean a little more chance of breakage. In regard to the treatment of ores; this would necessitate the use of some heavier mediums than ordinary silica sand, or some other means of making the separation at a higher specific gravity than is required for coal. We are now working on a method of obtaining this effect for the preparation of anthracite coal without resorting to the use of heavier and more expensive material than common sand.

In principle, productiorl of salt from sea water is a simple operation. The sun and wind cause evaporation of sea water trapped in ponds, and what is left is principally salt. Commercial production, however, requires consideration of many factors. First is a high consistent annual rate of evaporation, as well as large areas of suitable low-lying ground close to economical shipping facilities. The south end of San Francisco Bay has these requisites. Large ponds are built, by using clamshell dredges to build up levees to a height of approximately 3 ft. on ground usually lower than sea level, so that the water may be taken in through tide gates without pumping. Ponds are divided into extremely large concentrating ponds and smeller crystallizing ponds. Approximately ten times more area is required for concentrating than for crystallizing. The concentrating ponds are irregular in shape and size but the crystallizing ponds are rectangular and fairly regular in size, to aid in harvesting. The ocean water is taken into the first of a series of concentrating ponds and gradually moved forward from pond to pond as it increase:: in density, reaehing the crystallizing area as a saturated brine. This brine is pumped into the crystallizer at the beginning of the net evaporating season, usually in May, and further evaporation causes its sodium chloride content to deposit on the bottoms of the ponds. The brine must be drawn off and a fresh supply added from time to time to prevent other undesirable salts from depositing with the sodium chloride. Harvesting usually begins near the end of August and now is accomplished almost entirely by mechanical means. After harvesting, the salt is stored in large sbockpiles until required for shipping or refining. The greatest amount is used for industrial purposes and is shipped without any processing other than screening, but all salt for domestic use produced by the Leslie Salt Co. is refined by the racuum process, giving a produet consistently testing over 09.9 per cent sodium chloride.

Mining headlines in 1952 dealt mainly with expansion as the industry aimed for an ever increasing production to meet the nation's needs. Huge sums were expended for equipment, research, and development. Headlines told part of the story. Negotiations between San Manuel Copper Co. and the RFC finally resolved in a $94 million loan for the development of low grade Arizona ores. Magma Copper, parent firm was to supply an additional 8 million. Kennecott Copper Co., deepening its Deep Ruth Shaft of its Ruth, Neyy mine, announced that the shaft would be in full production in 1953.
