Oil and gas development in Louisiana during 1935 brought this state at the close of the year up to fourth place in the nation as a producing area. A review of development in North Louisiana centers around Rodessa, the most important reserve discovered in this area in many years. While the producing limits have not been defined, this discovery is one of the major developments of the year. New gas fields were discovered in Lincoln, De Soto and Bossier parishes. The Lincoln Parish discovery, completed flowing a highly saturated gas from the Glen Rose, further indicates the importance of deep-seated prospects in the interior salt-dome area. Minor extensions were made at Sligo and Pine Island. During the year, 126 oil wells and 103 gas wells were completed in North Louisiana as compared with 144 oil wells and 68 gas wells during 1934. The North Louisiana oil production was 9,617,405 bbl. as com-pared with 9,274,050 bbl. during 1934, an increase of 343,355 bbl., while the gas production increased 18 billion cu. ft. in 1935 over its 1934 figure. The Louisiana Department of Conservation gage of Nov. 1, 1935, shows an open-flow capacity of 4,563,725,000 cu. ft. per day from 941 wells in the Monroe field and 682,770,000 cu. ft. from 159 wells in the Rich-land field. A great deal of leasing continues in North Louisiana as a result of the Lincoln Parish discovery and development in the Rodessa field, especially in Bossier, De Soto, Winn, Lincoln, Bienville, Webster, Ouachita and Richland parishes. South Louisiana's position as an area of important reserves was further proved during the past year. Increased drilling resulted in the discovery of seven new fields: Lafitte, Garden Island Bay, Tepetate, Bunkie, St. Martinsville, Jeanerette and Big Lake. New sands or producing horizons proved productive in 15 of the proven fields. The total oil production for South Louisiana during 1935 was 40,731,-056 bbl. as compared with 23,255,437 bbl. during 1934. The temperature and strain rate dependence of the flow stress ratio and the stvain rate dependence qi the flow stress of annealed polycrystalline a zirconiur were determined over the temperature range 30 0" to 1000°K. Some evidence was found for strain aging and discontinuous flow in the temperature ranges 520" to 650°Kand650" to 760°K, respectively. The Cottvell-Stokes relationship was obtained when deformation occurred by twinning as well as slip. The flow stress ratio showed a strong dependence on temperature and strain rate above 800°K. The expevirnental evidence indicated that the rate-controllitzg mechanism for the deformation of a zirconium above 800°K was dislocation climb, and that the deformation was not thermally activated in the range 520" to 800°K. The stacking-fault energy of a zirconium was estimated to be about 250 ergs per sq cm. A knowledge of the temperature and strain rate dependence of the applied stress necessary to deform a crystalline solid is essential for understanding the thermally activated processes occurring during deformation.' Several experimental techniques have been developed for studying these processes.273 One of the techniques is the deter mi nation of the strain rate dependence of the flow stress at constant temperature. In close-packed crystals, it has often been observed that the change in stress due to a change in the strain rate varies linearly with the flow stress, (~1,' This relationship, known as the Cottre ll-Stokes law, is obeyed when deformation occurs by glide alone. However, when deformation occurs by twinning as well as glide, there is disagreement among different investigators on whether the Cottrell-Stokes law is observed. Whereas Thornton et ~1.~find departures from Cottrell-Stokes law when twinning occurs in copper, ~avis~ and sasinski? find that Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed when deformation occurs by twinning as well as slip in cadmium and magnesium, respectively. One of the main objectives of this study is to determine whether the Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed when deformation occurs by twinning as well as slip. Although nearly 10 pct of the total tonnage of coal produced annually within the United States is handled by bulk freighters on the Great Lakes, very little of the detail connected with it has been published other than occasional newspaper stories and publication of tonnage statistics. Of the total tonnage floated on the Lakes each year some 10,000,000 is stored and distributed from the port of Duluth-Superior, at the western end of Lake Superior commonly known as the Head of the Lakes. This port has the largest single area concentration of coal docks in the world. Since this area contains the largest ore docks, the largest movable material handling bridge, the largest and highest grain elevator and the largest coal bri-quetting plant in the world, it is entirely fitting and proper that here also should be located the largest coal dock and what we believe to be the world's largest clam shell. Of the sixteen coal docks operated by ten companies, five are owned and operated by the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. which has two docks on the Superior, Wis., waterfront and three docks in Duluth, Minn. It is with these five docks that we are primarily concerned, General History In the summer of 1871 a small sailing vessel entered the harbor of Duluth-Superior with the first commercial coal cargo. All the coal brought up that first year did not amount to more than 3000 tons. During the year 1877 the first dock equipped for handling coal was built in Duluth. Coal receipts increased to 52,785 tons in 1879 the first year for which an official record was kept. Since then the volume of water-borne coal to the Head of the Lakes steadily increased to a maximum of 12,688,321 tons in the year 1923. This tonnage was nearly equalled in the year 1927 and the next highest tonnage recent year was in 1946 when 10,105,703 tons were unloaded. The average annual bring-up over a ten year period 1938 to 1947 was 8,605,231 tons. Approximately 30 pct of the coal unloaded at the Head of the Lakes is handled over the docks of the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. Competition of other fuels coupled with expansion of coal fields in the mid-west have held coal receipts for Duluth-Superior at a relatively constant figure during the last eight years although the total tonnage of coal floated on the Great Lakes has more than doubled in the past 25 years. The growth temperature of dendrite tips has been measured in a binary alloy system, Al-Cu, as a function of rate of formation of solid phase. Metallographic examination has rerealed the dendritic structure dereloped during different stages of the freezing process and factors influencing the undercooling, such as solute buildup, surface tension, and kinetic effects, have been estimated. Practical implications of the results are discussed. THE development of a dendritic growth pattern during the solidification of metals and alloys has an influence at least equal to that of grain size on the properties of the casting or ingot being produced. and consequently much interest has been devoted to the study of this phenomenon. A review of the knowledge gathered up to 1964 has been given by Chalmers.' Among recent publications in the area the works of Jackson et al 2 and Flemings and his coworkers3,4 are of special interest. This work is an experimental study of the factors which influence the development of a dendritic pattern during the solidification of a typical binary alloy system, A1-Cu, when there is no heat source in the liquid. This means that the temperature and the temperature gradient are controlled by the heat extraction from and latent heat evolved by the growing crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples were prepared from a master alloy made up of aluminum, 99.995 pct, and copper. 99.99 pct, of the concentrations given below and of sufficient size to fill cylindrical graphite molds of 35 mm ID and 35 mm height. Bottom. wall. and lid of the graphite molds were all of 6 mm thickness, Fig. 1. Thin ceramic thermocouple shields could be introduced at different positions in the sample through holes in the lid. The assembly was heated in a small vertical resistance furnace to a suitable temperature. 700° to 720°C. which is well above the melting point of the sample. It was thereafter taken out of the furnace and chilled at selected rates, and the temperature changes in the sample were recorded. For high sensitivity in the temperature recordings, a reference thermocouple was held in a solidifying pure aluminum melt. which was very well insulated and therefore was at a constant temperature. 660°C, for nearly half an hour. The thermocouples were connected so that the difference voltage was fed into the recorder of which the most sensitive range was 1 mV. Temperature variations could be read to within 0.l°C. The thermocouples used were of the Chromel-Alumel type (28- or 38-gage wires) and the recorder a two-pen Moseley strip chart recorder. The different rates of chilling were obtained in the following way. a) The graphite crucible was wrapped in one or two layers of an insulating. feltlike material (Fiberfrax paper from the Carborundum Co.). The drop in temperature per unit time after complete solidification could thereby be varied from 8" to 18°C per min. This corresponds to a rate of heat extraction in the given samples from 0.08 to 0.17 cal cm-' sec-I. 6) The bare graphite mold was placed free on a piece of firebrick. The measured temperature drop was around 50°C per min (-0.5 cal cm-" ' sec- I). c) By blowing compressed air through a tube with many holes surrounding the mold in a ring shape. the rate of heat transfer could be raised to 150' to 200°C per min (-1.7 cal cm-3 sec- I). d) Cooling rates around 1000 C per mill (-9.4 cal cm-3 sec-l) were obtained by substituting the air in the device used in c by water. The range of cooling rates used in these experiments correspond to technical casting processes from slow solidification as obtained in sand molds to very rapid freezing which occurs in some continuous casting and welding processes. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The A1-Cu system was chosen for the experiments: the relevant part of the phase diagram is reproduced in Fig. 2. Observation of the Center Temperature. During the past year, the Watertown Arsenal has been interested in the occluded gas and oxide content of certain ordnance steels in order to determine, if possible, whether some of the peculiar failures in their physical properties might not be traced to these causes. For the purpose of best accomplishing a study of this nature, it was decided to heat the various samples of steel in a vacuum for definite periods of time at high temperatures and carefully examine the quantity and composition of the gases evolved. By the use of a fused quartz tube fitted with a water-cooled, ground-glass stopper, it was possible to maintain a vacuum at a temperature of 1000" C. for 10 hr. without perceptible leakage being evidenced as measured by a McLeod gage. The silica tube was connected with an evacuating system so constructed that the volatilized gases could be removed from time to time and a low vacuum of 0.0002 to 0.0010 mm. of mercury continuously maintained. At no time during the period of heating or in the removal of the gases did the evacuated system come in contact with rubber stoppers or any rubber connections, making contamination from such a source, impossible. In other words, the only volatile products that could be: obtained must necessarily have come from the steel itself or from the glass and fused quartz system or from the mercury used as a sealing agent. In the carlier experiments, the steel treated was in the form of turnings, but this practice was discarded because the weight's of the turnings before and after being heated were widely inconsistent,, even when taken from the same piece of steel. This discrepancy developed largely through variation in the amount of metal volatilized with the gases; this metal could always be seen in the form of a ring where it condensed in the cooler portion of the tube in either the amorphous or crystalline condition. Because of the frequency in occurrence and the variation in the manner of deposition, this material was roughly analyzed and found to consist for the most part of iron. A variation of yield and tensile strength with direction has been noted in heat-treated 4340 steel which had been warn-worked by rolling in the austenitic condition prior to quenching. Measurements by X-rays showed a preferred orientation of martensite crystals. Various ideal preferred orientations of martensite were calculated by assuming a preferred orientation for austenite and transforming this to martensite by the Kurdjumov -Sachs and Nishiyama relationships. Comparison with the measured preferred orientation showed that the ideal rolling texture for austenite in 4340 steel could be expressed as a (112) [111] texture with a component of (110) [112]. No evidence was found for any fiber axis in the rolling direction, or fop- a (123) [412] texture. The observed martensite pole figures can be adequately accounted for by these ideal austenite textures and by the Kurdjumou-Sachs or Nishiyama transformation relationships between austenite and martensite. ALTHOUGH preferred orientations are found in cold-rolled steel sheet and in many nonferrous metals, they are not generally encountered in wrought, heat-treated high-strength steels, since such steels are generally not cold worked sufficiently to develop a strong texture, and any texture that is present is removed during heat treatment by the phase transformations taking place. This report gives details on a preferred orientation found in warm-rolled and hardened 4340 steel. In a recent study, a special combination heat-treating and working technique was used in which 4340 steel was deformed in the austenitic condition, and before re crystallization of the austenite could occur, quenched to form martensite.' Since the austenite was unrecrystallized, it was cold worked and hence could have contained a preferred orientation which could be transmitted to the martensite on quenching, and this in turn could be manifested as a directionality of mechanical properties. Such a directionality of properties was found as a result of working, and this prompted an X-ray study of the preferred orientation. Literature Survey— Rolling Texture in Face-Cen-tered-Cubic Austenite—M a preferred orientation is found in a rolled and hardened steel, it is first appropriate to consider what texture existed in the austenite as a result of the rolling but prior to the transformation to martensite. The changes taking place as a result of the austenite-martensite transformation are then considered. In view of the instability of austenite in 4340 steel at low temperatures, no direct determination of the austenite texture was made. However, an estimate of the texture for austenite in 4340 steel may be made by considering the textures found for other face-centered-cubic metals. Barrett' has reviewed the rolling textures for many materials. The most common orientation in face-centered-cubic metals has the (110) planes parallel to the rolling plane and the [112] directions parallel to the rolling direction, or (110) [112]. Other orientations found are (112) [111], as well as (100) [001], (110) [001], and others. Beck and his co-workers, using quantitative pole figures, report that (123) [121],3 later corrected to (123) [412],4 better describes the ideal orientation. smallman5 reported that the ideal preferred orientation for high-purity face-centered-cubic metals is (123) [121], but that there is a transition to (110) [112] as solid solution elements are added. The latter texture tends to occur more readily at lower temperatures. This transition between the two textures was explained by differences in the slip characteristics with concentration or temperature. More recently, Jones and Fell6 concluded that the (123) [412] texture for face-centered-cubic metals could equally well be represented by a mixture of (110) [112] and (112) [111] textures, and hence it had no physical reality. From the above results it can be seen that there is no agreement on the "ideal" texture for fcc metals and, hence, no firm basis for assuming a texture for austenite in 4340 steel. Therefore, the orientations (110) [112], (123) [412], and (112) [111] have been considered in the following.* *The (123) [4121 is identical to the (123) [121] rotated 90 deg. It is a curious fact that while in our Transactions there are papers dealing with mining-districts in all parts of the world, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, there is not one which describes the mining possibilities of Nicaragua, our near neighbor. To be most interested in distant objects, like the moon, and to neglect what lies at our feet, appears to be a trait of human nature. The neglect of Nicaragua is not confined to the American Institute of Mining Engineers. In no other transactions am I able to find papers dealing with mining in Nicaragua, some parts of which are as much in need of discovery and research as the North Pole. I hope this paper will be the precursor of many others to be printed in our Transaclions, dealing not only with the miniilg possibilities of Nicaragua, but with the whole of Central America, where there are vast areas a,waiting skill and capital for their development. Much of this capital and skill should come from the United States in the future, although it is probable that European capitalists, when they appreciate fully the possibilities, will investigate more and more the mining-resources of Nicaragua and ot'her Central American republics. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of Nicaragua showing the principal mining-districts. 11. History. Mining in Nicaragua did not begin yesterday. It was commenced by civilized man when the Spanish conquerors pene-' trated into the interior and forced the natives to procure the precious metal for them. It is strange that the Spaniards did not find more gold, and work on a scale as extensive as in Colombia and other parts of South America. IN addition to its base-metal and coal mining operations, the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has, for the past quarter century, been one of the few large American mining companies interested in dredging. Its activities in this field are confined to gold, and to Alaska, but it is the largest operator in that territory, with twelve huge dredges available to work during the summer on the frozen ancient beach sands at Nome and the gravels of Fairbanks. These operations will be described separately.

Apart from a usable product and good mining conditions, the greatest asset for a profitable coal mining organization is an effective mine maintenance program. The first step in achieving this is to have good mechanics-or men who want to be mechanics and are interested in knowing, more about the design and control of the machines in their charge. A good mechanic's knowledge and ability result from ambition, curiosity, and determination. Starting with these qualities, the aspiring mechanic can launch his career by learning all he can about mechanics, electricity, and hydraulics. Though the path is rough, the end result is rewarding. Mining machinery probably receives as much, if not more, abuse as any other heavy equipment in use today. Considering the conditions under which much of the repair work must be done, it is essential that the mine operator has the best men and tools to perform the work. Mining machines, from their inception, have utilized the electric motor; and down through the years of mechanization, this power source has undergone many changes to better adapt it to the job. The first motors used were direct-current (d-c) motors since d-c power was the most economical power source for mining at the time of early mechanization. These motors were large open-type machines which are seldom used in modern mining. Because of the mine environment, the d-c motor has been reduced in size to better suit the application in mining machines and is now manufactured with dust-tight or explosion-proof enclosures. The d-c motor is constructed with either (or both) series and shunt fields located on the stationary part of the motor (stator) and an armature coil wound on the rotating part of the motor (rotor). Power is supplied to the armature by brushes which are held stationary and make sliding contact with the armature. The brushes requires regular and careful maintenance because worn or defective brushes will cause heat or arcing which can destroy the motor. D-c motors can be used as d-c generators when mechanical power is supplied to them by the rotating

The year 1940 saw an increase of 20 per cent in oil production over the previous year—compared with a 16 per cent increase the previous year. In all, 25,790,380 bbl. were produced, an increase of 4,414,150 bbl, over 1939 and the largest production figure for south Arkansas since 1928. The older settled production continued to decline. Magnolia accounted for most of the increase, with aid from the other recent deep fields. During the year, 169 wells were drilled, 79 fewer than in the previous year. Of 131 wells drilled in proven fields, 18 were dry. Three of the 38 wildcats were pool openers. The drilling depth record was increased from 9028 to 9550 feet. Trend of Prospecting For the first time since 1936, the search for oil in the deep Smackover limestone slackened perceptibly; g dry wildcats ended in Smackover, 2 in. the underlying Eagle Mills; 7 penetrated Paleozoic beds, while 9 ended in Hosston, 2 in Glen Rose, 2 in Paluxy and 4 in Gulf. Geology The wells listed in Table 2 either resulted in the discovery of new oil pools or, because of their depth or location, afforded impor-tant stratigraphic or structural informa-tion. Fig. I is a general columnar and stratigraphic section showing the relation-ship of the strata within the Comanche series. The nomenclature shown was ac-cepted by the Shreveport Geological Society. It was subsequently published by Imlay,l who indicated probable correlations with other areas and presented evidence for the possible Jurassic age of the under-lying Cotton Valley and Smackover formations. New Fields Pouke.—On June 10, 1940, the Louark Producing Co. completed its No. I Sturgis, sec. I, T. 17 S., R. 27 W., in central Miller County, producing between 3583 and 3607 ft. in the upper part of the Paluxy forma-tion. The well flowed I00 bbl. of 3r.4' gravity oil per day through Ns-in. tubing choke. This discovery resulted from seismograph work. Six other wells were drilled in the area, none of which found production in the original sand. One of these wells is producing from a sand 50 ft. deeper in the section. The others were abandoned. No further development is in prospect. Production is from lenticular sands of the upper Paluxy; 45,556 bbl. had been pro-duced by the end of 1940. There is structural closure against a fault to the northwest. McKanzie.—The Atlantic Refining Com-pany's No. I Bodcaw Lumber Co., sec. 29, T. 17 S., R. 23 W., eastern central La-fayette County, was completed June 8, 1940, as the eighth and farthest west of the Smackover (Reynolds o6lite) limestone pools. The well flowed 10 bbl. an hour of 58.6' gravity distillate through an 1 1/64 Ma-in. tubing choke, with a gas-oil ratio of 8400:I.

This study investigates whether oxygen consumption during segregated forward combustion may be affected by natural convection. Linear theory indicates that thermal instability occurs in a horizontal porous medium when the modified Rayleigh number N 'Ra exceeds a critical value of about 40. Most experimental results, including those described here, indicate this value to be about an order of magnitude smaller. N ', is derived from "differential similarity" and the proper time scale factor is also obtained. The critical value of N'ra for a horizontal, water-saturated porous medium at atmospheric pressure subjected to a uertical temperature gradient was found to be about 3.0. The ambiguity in the value of N'R, arising when fluid properties cannot be assumed constant is indicated. Natural convection was observed for oblique systems below N 'Ra , while simultaneous horizontal flow did not affect N Racrit. The expected range of values for the various parameters pertaining to segregated forward combustion is indicated and the corresponding values of N 'Ra calculated. Only under very favorable conditions, such as high permeability, high pressure and low top temperature, can the critical value of N 'R, be exceeded. Thickness of the convection layer should not become too large, since the time required to obtain significant mixing is proportional to the square of the thickness. For an oblique combustion frant the conditions for significant mixing may be less strenuous. LNTRODUCTION Laboratory1,2 and field314 experiments have shown that a markedly upgraded oil can be produced by in situ forward combustion. Under certain conditions injected air may move through a high permeability, gas-saturated channel over the oil-saturated layer, while combustion takes place, exclusively, at the horizontal interface (Fig. 1). Such a channel may be a natural gas cap, or it may result from a forward combustion process in which injected air and combustion gases fingered through the top of the formation, causing a premature breakthrough at the production well. In this particular case of segregated forward combustion, the air stream moves parallel to the combustion front. Molecular diffusion and transverse mechanical dispersion will be insufficient to cause all the oxygen in the air stream to reach the combustion front. When the oxygen in the air stream is not completely consumed in the combustion process, it will reach the production well and create a serious fire hazard. In addition, the reduced efficiency may make the process economically unprofitable while also serious corrosion problems may be experienced in the production we11.3 This undesirable situation should, therefore, be prevented. However, in a situation as depicted in Fig. 1, an unstable temperature gradient exists in the gas phase. The combustion is taking place at the lower boundary at a nearly constant temperature that may be anywhere from 600 to 1,200F, depending on the conditions. The upper boundary of the gas phase is overlying, impermeable rock; its temperature might be around 100F, but may increase to 300F or higher due to conduction and convection as the combustion process continues. This represents a steep temperature gradient and it is conceivable that under those conditions free or natural convection will take place in the gas

The recent emphasis placed upon the use of molybdenum as a geochemical indicator has stimulated considerable inquiry into the behavior of molybdenum in the zone of oxidation. This paper represents a summary of recent and continuing experimental work and calculations in an investigation of a portion of the system Mo-Fe-S-H20 and treats the stability of various iron and molybdenum compounds with respect to oxidation potential and pH. Using experimentally determined free energy values for ferrimolybdite, diagrams of the stability fields of this mineral have been calculated with respect to ilsemannite (?), molybdenite, pyrite and limonite. This theoretical approach is the one utilized by Garrels3'4 in studies of the relationships of various minerals in the zone of oxidation. Use of this approach is particularly suited to the study of geochemistry in the zone of supergene processes because of the low temperatures, low pressures and other relatively easily determined and duplicated factors that exist in the near surface environment. Such a study of molybdenum, however, is complicated by several factors. One of these is the fact that the strong amphoteric behavior of molybdenum makes possible a wide variety of substances and complexes whose exact chemical natures are unknown. The second factor is the dearth of thermodynamic data for many of the simplest of the possible compounds and ions important to the study. For the purpose of this study, the problem of complexes has been approached through considering only the simpler possibilities realizing that the complexes and systems so treated may be gross oversimplifications. All the complexes considered, however, have been suggested in the chemical 2,7,9,12 or geologi-cal literature. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Studies of the behavior of molybdenum ions and ferrimolybdite have been carried out in aqueous sys- tems, and reactions have been followed by simultaneous measurement and recording of pH and oxidation potential. A major problem involved in this study was the long periods of time necessary for equilibrium to be established in some of the systems considered; in a few instances, these periods exceeded four weeks, that is, four weeks during which measured conditions changed continuously. Another problem, in some instances, was the indeterminate nature of the reactions that have taken place. Because of the tendency of molybdenum to complex, reactions which take place under some of the more extreme imposed conditions of oxidation and acidity or alkalinity are unknown. However, useful data for the present work were obtained from studies of the molybdate ion and ferrimolybdite between pH 2 and 8 and under only moderately oxidizing to nonoxidizing conditions. Instruments used in the experiments were a Hewlitt-Packard Model 412A VTVM, a modified Beckman Zeromatic pH Meter and two Varian model 11 recorders. pH was measured between glass and calomel electrodes and Eh was measured between calomel and platinum electrodes. Conditions of pH were varied with 1N H2SO4 and 1N NH4OH and 1N NaOH. Eh was varied with gaseous nitrogen, oxygen or aqueous H202. Ambient temperature was essentially uniform at 24ºC and was increased in the reaction vessel by the positioning of a magnetic stirrer whose temperature was sufficient to bring the temperature to 2S°C in the reaction. The temperatures of reaction did not vary more than 1/2ºfrom 25°C. Two reactions were investigated, the ferrimolybdite-limonite-water reaction and the reduction of molybdate ion. Studies of both reactions yielded useful data that were used in preparation of the Eh-pH diagrams. The traces of the reactions are shown on Fig. 1. Ferrimolybdite-Limonite- Water: Studies of this reaction involved analysis of the solution of ferrimolybdite and simultaneous formation of ferric hydroxide. The data are summarized on Fig. 1. In this reaction, equilibrium was attained at various pH's when coexistence of the two solid phases (ferrimolybdite and ferric hydroxide) was attained. At the proper pH, controlled by the amount of ferrimolybdite and thus the dissolved content of molybdate species, both phases were observed and reaction times to complete the transition were on the order of weeks. THE increasing use of aluminum and its alloys in commercial fields has demanded a better understanding of their machining properties. This fact is exemplified by problems that have arisen in the automotive and airplane industries, but many in other fields might be cited. As pure aluminum and its alloys in their various commercial conditions show appreciable differences in their machining properties, it is not surprising that quite divergent solutions have been offered for the machining problems encountered. However, if the fundamental requirements of the most suitable cutting tools for these metals are understood, these machining problems lend themselves more readily to satisfactory solutions. Since the machining of free cutting brass and mild steel is understood by most persons accustomed to working these metals, it may serve our purpose better to first make a general comparison of the tools more commonly used in machining these metals with the tools most suitable for machining aluminum, then proceed to a more specific discussion of the individual stools.

7.3-1. Introduction. All phases of mining competent materials are affected directly by the results achieved from primary blasts. It is imperative that their design suit each particular set of mining conditions. In general, the round design must provide an adequate tonnage of material, properly placed with suitable fragmentation, to ensure that loading, haulage, and subsequent disposal or processing are accomplished at the lowest possible cost. Blasting rounds are designed by the proper application of cratering relationships developed for the single, concentric, confined explosive charge. Blasting for surface mining and most open-cut heavy construction, however, is characterized by the use of rounds, composed of a number of explosive charges with relatively long lengths, which are placed in benches with specific finite dimensions. Therefore, modifications must be made to the classical, single point-charge cratering concepts. It is the purpose of this discussion to outline the basic principles, significant variables, and procedures for their integration in the design of rounds that are applicable to conditions characteristic of surface mining. Because relatively insensitive blasting agents will be used in most instances, particular attention must be given to priming, control of confinement, and selection of charge diameters that ensure complete explosive-reaction execution. 7.3-2. General Considerations. The primary requisites for any blasting round are that it ensure optimum results for existing operating conditions, possess adequate flexibility, and be relatively simple to employ. It is important that the relative arrangement of blastholes within a round be properly balanced to take advantage of the energy released by the explosives and the specific properties of the materials being blasted. There are also environ- mental and operational factors peculiar to each mine that will limit the choice of blasting patterns.

Streaming-potential experiments were conducted within the Muddy- and Dakota-sandstone interval of a Denver basin well. Analysis of the data shows that, for this case, streaming potentials opposite sands were higher than those opposite shales when the mud was fresh. Streaming potentials opposite shales, however, were of sufficient magniiIlde to be important in SP interpretation. They were linearly dependent upon pressure differential, and they increased with mud filtrate resistivity. The magnitude of streaming potentials opposite sands was influenced by the characteristics of the original mud cake formed at the time of drilling. Use of mud samples taken at the time of logging may not always be satisfactory for determining streaming-potential corrections. Both the streaming and electrochemical potentials were found to be affected by the previous history of the borehole system. Following a change in mud characteristics, several days were required for SP stabilization. This was, in part, due to the mud cake acting as an imperfect shale membrane. INTRODUCTION Laboratory investigations by Wyllie,1 Salisch,2 Moore," Sen Gupta and Bannerjee,0 and Hill and Anderson' have shown that streaming potentials developed across mud cakes deposited on permeable filter beds are of sufficient magnitude to be critically important in SP interpretation. Streaming potentials across shales have been reported by Schenck,' Gondouin and Scala; and Hill and Anderson." The magnitude of the shale streaming potentials obtained by Schenck and by Gondouin et a1 led these authors to conclude that in many cases the shale streaming potential would approximately equal the mud-cake streaming potential. Hill and Anderson, however, obtained somewhat lower magnitudes of shale streaming potential. The field experiment described in the present paper was a cooperative project carried out by the respective operations and research departments of Schlumberger Well Surveying Corp., Shell Development Co. and Shell Oil Co. The primary objective of the experiment was to determine in the borehole the streaming-potential behavior of both shales and mud cakes under conditions approaching, as nearly as possible, those normally encountered in logging practice. METHODS AND EQUIPMENT WELL A Muddy- and Dakota-sandstone vie11 in the Denver basin was chosen for the experiment. Both sandstones were water-bearing and, since reservoir pressures in these sandstones are abnormally low (gradient of approximately 0.25 psi/ft), it was expected that studies of streaming potential could be conducted from low-pressure differentials (approximately 200 psi) to about 27000 psi by bailing mud from the hole, filling up and then applying wellhead pressure. Australian rutile was chlorinated in the presence of CO or carbon. The chlorination velocity in CO was found to be strongly influenced by temperature and proportional to the CO concentration, but independent of the Cl, concentration. In the presence of carbon, the reaction velocity is much higher. The reactivity of the carbon and the distance between the carbon and the rutile surfaces are important variables. The reaction velocity is approximately proportional to the Cl, concentration and independent of the CO concentration of the surrounding atmosphere. Experiments with fluidized-bed chlorination of carbon-rutile mixtures indicate that the motion of the bed has little influence on the reaction velocity. At low temperatures, the chlorination velocity of dense tablets is much greater than that of TiO, coke mixtures suitable for fluidization. The reaction mechanism is discussed. In the industrial production of TiCl, rutile is chlorinated in the presence of carbon. Disregarding intermediate steps, the reaction may be expressed by the following equations: The ultimate object of this study was to find out whether the reaction velocity was higher in fluidized bed operation compared with chlorination of pelle-tized carbon-rutile mixtures. From a literature survey and preliminary experiments it was learned that some basic knowledge about the reaction mechanism was needed for a good experimental design. Therefore the following sets of experiments were carried out: 1) Studies on the reaction velocity in the chlorination of rutile with CO as the only reducing agent. 2) Chlorination of separate rutile-carbon tablets. 3) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets at different temperatures with various kinds of carbon, various grain sizes, and various tablet-making techniques. This series of experiments was carried out not only with pure chlorine but also with mixtures of chlorine with argon, CO and CO,. 4) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets made in a strictly standardized manner. 5) Chlorination of static-bed rutile-carbon mixtures. 6) Fluidized-bed chlorination of the same mixture. The experiments 4 to 6 formed the final and direct test of the main question: Static bed vs fluidized bedo. Although there are many patents and papers dealing with the general aspects of chlorination, only few experiments from which detailed information can be obtained have been reported in the literature. Pamfilov and coworkersl3 have studied chlorination of TiO, with CO or carbon as the reducing agent. They found that the weight decrease per hour at 600o to 800°C amounted to 11 to 14 pct with CO and 45 to 51 pct with carbon. They suggest that phosgene might be an intermediate in the chlorination of TiO,. Takimoto and Hattori have chlorinated reduced titanium oxide (TiO) and found a very high rate of TiC1, -production. They proved that the composition of the gas from the chlorination of rutile-carbon mixtures contained mainly CO. They reported for instance 74.7 pct CO, and 5.6 pct CO at 800°C at which temperature the Boudouard equilibrium composition is 12 pct CO and 88 pct CO. Seligman and Segerchano6 have studied the chlorination of TiO. They proved that Ti0 and chlorine react rather rapidly at temperatures as low as 300°C. Above 400°C, the reaction was complete. At 500°C the velocity of this reaction was much higher than was chlorination of TiO, + C. McTaggart,7 Nishimura, et al. and Wilskam have chlorinated mixtures of carbon and various kinds of rutile or beneficated ilmenite. Nishimura, et al. also report the results from reduction of TiO, with H2, CO, or carbon. At 900°C only 1 pct Ti O is formed in 2 hrs. At 1100°C 23.1 pct Ti, 0, was formed if elementary carbon was present. No carbide formation occurred below 1400°C. McIntosh and Cofferll have observed that the CO, content of the exit gases from chlorination of rutile and calcined petroleum coke is appreciably higher than found in the Boudouard equilibrium. At 900°C the ratio (CO, /CO + CO) is about 80 pct, whereas the equilibrium value is about 2 pct. W. E. Dunn12 has studied the chlorination rates of several TiO,-bearing minerals with CO + Cl, or COCl . Chlorinations were carried out either in a fluidized reactor or a fixed-bed reactor, both having a 30-mm diameter. The results obtained in both reactors were comparable. It was proved that benefi-ciated ilmenite (i.e., ilmenite from which the iron oxide had been removed by chlorination) was chlorinated 10 times faster thanrutile.
