One Sunday night last month the phone rang and it was George Schenck from Penn State. How would we like to see a big scrap operation, he wanted to know. A few days later we were on the Connecticut turnpike headed for New Haven to visit a large scrap operation, M. Schiavone and Sons. George had a large clam basket in the back which he explained was for collecting trophies. The car shredder, he said, turns out some fancy metal shapes. In fact, they have gained a certain acceptance as objets d’art among George's friends and relatives. He thinks there may be a small, but possibly lucrative secondary market for shredded cars in the art world if the idea is imaginatively promoted. On the way to New Haven we received a briefing on the scrap industry. The scrap business grew from humble beginnings. Mostly it was started by a few immigrant Jews who collected junk in hand- or horse-drawn carts. The fortunate one might even have had a truck. Before proceeding further, we hasten to point out that the word "junk" is strictly taboo among scrap people, who prefer to refer to their industry as the "secondary metals industry."

Two comprehensive papers have appeared regarding the forms of copper that occur in smelter slags, one by Frank E. Lathe1 and the other by C. G. Maier and G. D. Van Arsdale.2 These authors comment on other published results and draw conclusions from their own investiga-tions. The development of X-ray examination of minerals and improve-ment in high-power microscopic methods make it possible today to get additional evidence by means that were not available to earlier investi-gators. The present work was confined to reverberatory slags obtained from five different plants. Some definite conclusions were reached regarding the forms of copper present in these slags. In most cases these agree with some of the findings of Maier and Van Arsdale but new methods of attack were used in the investigation.

T. Wilkins, of the Fuel Re¬search Station, London, and to Mr. James L. Elder, of the Alabama Under¬ground Gasification Experiment at Gorgas, Alabama, for their unfailing patience and effective support. Not only did these experienced and capable men edit and revise this discussion, but much of its content is a direct con¬tribution quoted in full from their memoranda. The recovery of the energy inherent in coal beds throughout the world has been done through the years by methods that today may be justly regarded as primitive. While the techniques of coal mining through the application of machines and the enhancement of information and skills have advanced to an extraordinary extent, particularly during the past 20 years, the underlying means is essentially the same as when man first began to mine coal. Despite this progress in the manner of coal mining, it continues today as a hazardous, toilsome, grimy task. Coal mining per se has advanced at a greater and more rapid stride in the past 25 years than the mining of any: other mineral, but the basic method is fundamentally the same as it was the first day a miner took a pick into his hands many centuries ago. The motivation for the art of dredging for placer mining can be compared in a slight degree to the spread of civilization which started in the Near East and spread both east and west. Dredging started with the "bag and spoon" dredge in the lowlands of Europe reportedly about 1565, went southeast to New Zealand where designs were developed for a bucket-line mining dredge known as the New Zealand type, and westward to the eastern United States where a dredge was developed and used exclusively for excavating. Then it moved to Montana, where it was first used for mining in 1895. The New Zealand-type dredge was imported into California in 1898 (Fig. 1) and was followed shortly by the Montana design. As today, these early dredges were equipped with continuous bucket- line chains, a treatment plant, and a means of waste disposal mounted on a wooden hull. Both types of dredges are complete mining units: they dig the formation, transport the dug materials, and concentrate the valuable ore. After sizing, the fines containing the ore are passed by gravity to the treatment unit, while the barren materials are discharged overboard. By digging the materials to be treated at the bow and depositing all the waste, at the stern, the dredges automatically advance to new reserves without presenting any transportation problems. The main differences between the two types are in the method of holding the dredge in the digging position and in the disposal of the tailings to the rear. The New Zealand type (Fig. 2) uses the headline system with a bow anchor for holding the dredge in the digging position and long tailing flumes or short stackers off the stern for disposal of the barren materials. DO the curricula of our mineral technology schools prepare their graduates to meet properly the full range of their responsibilities in after life? An unequivocal "no" could be returned to this question, because training and experience in professional work are quite as important as adequate college preparation. Furthermore, a had curriculum with a splendid corps of men doing the teaching and a competent body of students doing the learning will produce a better result than an ideal curriculum in the hands of unqualified teachers and poorly prepared students.

A DOCUMENT of progress and of great interest to engineers is the report of the Military Affairs Committee of 'the Engineering Council, which has just been accepted and sent to the secretary of War. It provides .a plan whereby civilian engineers holding commissions in the Reserve Corps may; with their con- sent, be called into service of the army during peace at any time, either with troops in the field or in a consulting capacity on any government engineering work. The Military Affairs Committee finds ample authority in the military bill passed by Congress on June 4, 1920, for this arrangement and also for extending the privilege to military engineer, officer-s of the regular army to engage in civilian work during times of peace. It is hoped that the Secretary of War will adopt the suggestions and put the program outlined into effect. This is a constructive piece of work comparable to the efforts of the military Committee before the war which developed so much in the way of preparedness, particularly in the program of military lectures which, held in the auditorium in the Engineering Societies Building, became so popular that each lecture had

This article is a continuation of a previous paper by the writer in which Kick's Law was stated to be a part of comminution theory. ln the present paper, a broadening of ideas is attempted in order to state a general theory. The word "general" is employed because the new theory includes all previous laws and generalizations which are considered to be essentially correct. These ideas are combined into a coherent whole and the general theory can be expressed by the equation In the author's previous paper on comminution, ' the equations developed were based on Charles' equation of exponents a-n +1 = 0. 2 This paper is divided into two parts, designated as First Approach and Second Approach. In the First Approach, the equations of the previous paper are utilized, with Charles' equation of exponents being necessary. In the Second Approach, a separate and independent method is used to derive the same conclusions as in the First Approach, but without the use of Charles' equation of exponents. Holmes accepts the theoretical foundation of Kick's Law as sound but denies that the law as such operates in comminution. His idea is that Kick's Law requires homogenous matter whereas the presence of cracks, flaws and cleavage planes, which predominate in the coarser particles, makes matter unhomogene-ous. This explains why there is no experimental evidence to support Kick's Law. However, since the basis of the law is theoretically sound, all experimental evidence must be viewed as emanating from it. This requires modification of current comminution equations to fit this concept. Holmes makes the modification by changing the constant exponent n in the general energy equation used by Charles (E = - JCdx/xn) to a variable exponent r. U. S. mining trends for 1956 continued steadily U+ S. uphill, technique and equipment advanced with the pull, and exploration and development of once mined districts attracted more attention than new areas. Expansion of the Ambrosia Lake district in New Mexico more than doubled known uranium ore reserves, and production began from several of the large new ore discoveries. In Canada the up trend was more spectacular, especially in exploration and development. To combat increasing problems arising from high labor costs, taxes, low grade orebodies, and dwindling discoveries, manufacturers and mining companies have continued to introduce new techniques and new products-reamer bits for enlarging small holes drilled by jacklegs, whup d'whups for drift mucking, Cryderman machines and over-the-head small crawler-type machines for shaft mucking, the 20-ton TL 220 four-wheeled tractor trailer unit for underground haulage, inertia-type dust collectors, roof bolting in conjunction with chain link fencing for wall support, wooden roof bolting using compression support of ground for wall support, and new one-use carbide bits.

In addition to ten papers (all preprinted) on properties, structure, aid hardenability of, carbon and alloy steels, eight formal papers were presented on one or more phases of steelmaklng, and a symposium on the determination of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel. This last started at 2 p.m. and was going strong with more than a third of the audience still present at 6 p.m.

FEW persons outside of the foundry trade have any conception of the great variety of sands now regularly specified and furnished, nor of the differences in foundry practice frequently resulting from apparently minor changes in sands. Conditions in each locality where the sands are mined and prepared necessitate special equipment designed to perform the work efficiently. The description that follows of the foundry sand producing operations is typical of the areas in New York and New Jersey, and particularly refers to the operations of the George F. Pettinos Co.

MINING methods are evolved rather than devised; and the process is slow. The advance in no particular year is phenomenal, but progress is un- questionably being made constantly in several directions: (a) better adaptation to given conditions of various "systems" of mining; (b) better utilization of mechanical equipment ; (c) improvement in working conditions so as to promote the health, safety and efficiency of the workers. During the year 1930 operations were commenced at a number of important new mines. Methods adopted are not new, except in minor detail, but the fitting of methods to conditions is interesting, because, as the engineers presumably started from scratch, they have selected the methods that experience under similar conditions has indicated as being the best.

The Rhenish lignite deposit in the Nordrhein-Westphalia province of the German Federal Republic covers an area on the left bank of the Rhine River of about 970 sq miles (Fig. 1). Here, in the Miocene era, some 20 million years ago a lignite seam was formed and later broken, through tectonic movements into several blocks, some thrown down into depths of over 1,500 ft. This deposit consists of a single seam, in places up to 300 ft thick, but averaging about 150 ft. In a few areas, it is split into as many as five seams, separated by barren strata. It contains about 60 billion tons (2000 lb/short ton) of lignite which, however, being relatively young geologically, has, because of approximately 60% moisture, 2 to 8% ash, and low sulfur, a net calorific value of 3,340 Btu. That calorific value increases, however, with rising thickness of the cap rock. About one-third of the yearly production of 90 to 100 million tons of raw lignites is converted into briquets. Raw lignite is pulverized and dried to about 18% water content and then pressed without binder into briquets under a pressure of about 14,000 psi. The briquets are being used primarily for residential heating; their sales, however, have been declining sharply since 1963. On the other hand, the volume of raw lignite used in steam power plants has been rising steadily and amounts at present (1968) to about two-thirds of the total production. Huge steam power plants, such as Frimmersdorf, shown in Fig. 2 (which, with an installed capacity of 2,600 MW [megawatt], represents the world's largest steam power plant) with a generating capacity of up to 300 MW per unit and a total installed capacity of over 6,000 MW, contribute about 26% of the total electric power production of the German Federal Republic.

(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) THE paper presented to the Institute in 1910, by H. 0. Hofman, on Recent Progress in Blast Roasting,1 has called the attention of the iron industry to the adaptability of these processes to the reclamation of by-products such as flue-dust and blue billy, and the better preparation of concentrates and fine ores for use in blast-furnaces. The waste of valuable iron-ore through the production of flue-dust has increased at an enormous rate, and much of it has in reality been wasted as far as future recovery is concerned. Only in recent years has a possible future value been recognized, and the material stored. The increased use of Mesabi ores, which carry considerable fine ore, is principally responsible for the great increase in the production of flue-dust. The amount of fine material that is carried over depends on the fineness of the material and the velocity of the gases, and also to a very great extent on the regularity or irregularity of the working of the furnace. Attempts to recover a part of this loss have been made by recharging a portion of the production into the furnace, but as this material has been once carried out from the furnace, it is naturally in good shape to be carried out again. A recent practice at some works, is to soak the flue-dust thoroughly with water to give it more cohesiveness, but by many this is considered of doubtful advantage in the furnace, and the gases are in consequence heavily laden with moisture. There are vast deposits of magnetic iron-ores in the United States and Canada that are too low in iron for use at the present time, but which can be economically concentrated into very rich material ; in many cases the fineness of crushing necessary to secure proper concentration has prevented their

The 128th meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers constituted a two weeks trip through the Great Northland of Ontario and Quebec and was a most memorable occasion. The last visit of the Institute to Canada was made in 1907 when the mines, which now have brought world wide fame to some of the camps, were not yet dis-covered. The party reached its greatest numbers at Porcupine where 167 visitors and nearly one hundred local members participated. Five members of the party from the States were on the previous trip in 1907. They were Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Huntoon, John Stevenson and son and E. F. Eurich. The Minister of Mines for the Province of Ontario attached his private car to the "Mining Engineers' Special" and made the complete trip through Ontario. This was a happy incident in many ways and gave the visitors an opportunity to discover a spirit of mutual accord between the Minister and mining industry that might well be emulated elsewhere. Two compartment cars and one standard Pullman with the Institute members from New York and the metropolitan district were attached special to the 6.15 p.m. Lehigh Valley train from New York, Sunday, Aug. 19, en route to Toronto, where was held the first session of the Institute's 128th Meeting.

THE prospective change in ore receipts at the Copper Queen reduction works necessitated a careful study of conditions to determine the most economical method of smelting. The first step, calculating the known, probable, and possible results, showed the economy of a unimetallurgical flow sheet f which the three pyrometallurgical stages would be roasting, reverberatory smelting, and converting. The change to "all reverb." practice, therefore, called for considerable additional roaster capacity, which could be obtained either by building additional units, or by remodelling the present units so as to give increased unit capacity. In view of the progress in roasting practice since the construction of the Copper Queen roaster plant and the heavy investment in that roaster plant, the second plan seemed to be the more desirable. The Copper Queen roaster plant consisted of twenty six-hearth, McDougall roasters, 18 ft. in diameter, equipped with cast-iron arms that originally were water cooled but now are air cooled. They have no top dry hearth and the feed is discharged through the top arch, near its periphery, by plunger feeders from two bins at opposite sides of the roaster.

IT is generally agreed that cold-working mechanically refines the grains into smaller fragments and with continued working these are oriented with certain crystallographic directions bearing a relation to the direction in which the metal is worked. Some of the energy expended on the metal during plastic deformation appears in the form of heat, but a very small portion remains in the metal as stored energy. The entropy, specific heat capacity, temperature at which recrystallization will just begin, density, ductility, elasticity, tensile strength, and resistance to corrosion are affected. These properties have been studied extensively and some of the changes in the physical properties due to cold-working were attributed to lattice distortion.1-8 The broadening of the K. lines on the X-ray diffraction diagrams of plastically deformed metals is believed to indicate lattice distortion, and consequently the existence of internal stresses. The evidence supporting this theory rests solely upon the observed experimental fact that the dif-fraction lines are broadened and the K a doublets are completely diffused. Elam9 has reviewed the matter of lattice distortion in relationship to the hardening of metals by plastic deformation. The X-ray diagrams of plastically deformed metals differ in general from annealed metals. The hardening of a metal was believed due to lattice distortion.9 The resolu-tion of the doublet is lost when a metal is cold-worked and the Lane spots are elongated. At one time this elongation was thought to indicate the elastic bending of the crystal planes. However, more careful work showed that the asterism was due to new orientations developed within the fragmented grains during plastic deformation. Some theories attrib-uted the hardening to fragmentation of the grains into smaller units.

If the reader finds that the basic information in a commodity chapter is insufficient, he can consult the appropriate sources in this chapter to find more detailed or more up-to-date information. In these days, technology develops so rapidly that this 4th edition will be somewhat out of date even by the time it is distributed. A comparison of this edition with the 3rd edition (1960) of Industrial Minerals and Rocks will clearly demonstrate how rapidly the scene changes. One of the best sources of new information, of course, is attendance at technical meetings. For example, the papers presented at the national and sectional meetings of AIME usually discuss new developments in the respective divisions of the society. Frequently this information is available in Preprints. In addition some are printed in Mining Engineering and/or the Transactions of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. Furthermore, other professional and trade journals contain articles pertinent to the field. A journal introduced in 1967, Industrial Minerals, published by the Metal Bulletin, Ltd., London, is an excellent source of information. The Mining Journal, Ltd., also in London, publishes a weekly journal, a Mining Magazine (monthly), and a Mining Annual Re- view. The latter covers the field from three aspects: (1) by commodities, (2) through technical developments, and (3) geographically. Other useful magazines and periodicals include Engineering and Mining Journal, Pit and Quarry, Rock Products, and World Mining, all published in the United States. In addition many new books related to industrial minerals have been published since the 3rd edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most of these, of course, are included in the bibliography of each chapter in this volume. Another excellent information source is the proceedings of the Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals. This group, which held its 11th annual meeting in 1975, is sponsored by a state geological survey or another mineral agency on a rotational basis. The proceedings have been published by the various sponsors and are available as indicated in Table 1. Two major sources of basic industrial mineral and rock data in the United States, and also a good source for many foreign countries, are the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The two agencies publish many reports and maps on a variety of geo- logical and mining subjects. In addition, each agency has an indexed list of all their publications with a free service announcing new publications. (New Publications of the Geological Survey, U.S. Geological Survey, Washington, D.C. 20242) and New Publications-Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Branch, U.S. Bureau of Mines, 4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213). The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) publishes annually Minerals Yearbooks which provide statistical data on mineral products including production, consumption, imports and exports, as well as information on new developments. Another very useful USBM series is called Mineral Facts and Problems. Editions were published in 1960, 1965, and 1970. Three other major series of publications by the Bureau are Information Circulars, Reports of Investigations, and Mineral Trade Notes. The latter is particularly good for news of foreign developments. A new Professional Paper No. 820 of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1973, summarizes data on the mineral resources of the entire country. The USGS, in cooperation with USBM, other Federal and various state agencies, has also prepared summary reports on mineral and water resources of given areas which include

THE death, on May 6, 1908, of Dr. Hermann Wedding, Privy Mining Councilor of the Kingdom of Prussia, and Professor of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel at the Royal Mining Academy of Berlin, was a loss keenly felt by the whole metallurgical world. Not alone in his native land, but also in foreign countries did he enjoy an esteem of which the title of honorary membership in the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the United States Association of Charcoal Iron-Workers, and the (British) Iron and Steel Institute bears eloquent testimony. Hermann Wedding was born March 9, 1834, in Berlin. At the suggestion of Dr. C. J. B. Karsten, the veteran father of Prussian metallurgy and author of the first German text-book of the metallurgy of iron, lie turned his attention, after gradu¬ating from the gymnasium, to mining and metallurgy. In 1853, he began a practical course at the Malapane iron-works, in Upper Silesia. Subsequently, he studied at the Berlin Mining Academy, and received from the University in 1859 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. A journey which be made to England, somewhat later, led to his undertaking a German translation, with revision and additions, of John Percy's classic treatise on the metallurgy of iron and steel, the publication of which, in successive installments, stretched through many years. In 1863, lie published, as a thesis in connection with his "Assessor's examination," an essay, entitled The Results of the Bessemer Process for the Production of Steel, and Its Prospects for the Rhenish and Westphalian Iron and Steel Industry, which revealed such ability and knowledge as to secure for him a call to the chair of metallurgy in the Berlin Mining Academy.
