The vecrystallization texture. formed by selective growth of random nuclei in an 80 pct volled 99.997 pct A1 crystal of initial orientation mear (123) (41.21 was found to consist of components related to the single-component rolling texture by 40 deg. rota-tiows around [111]axes. The relative-volume fractiovz of the various recrystallization-texture componezts may be accouzted for 012 the basis of the Lou) mobility of twist boundaries, if it is assumed that the mobility of the tilt boundaries also varies with their orientation. Similar results with a, aluminum-alloy cystal of the (110) [112] orientation, containing iron, silicon, and zinc, show that these solute contents do not impair the effectivezess of the oriented growth mechanism of re cry s-tallization- texture formation. In a previous investigation1,2 it was found that a sharp recrystallization texture is formed as a result of the oriented growth of random artificial nuclei in an aluminum crystal rolled to 80 pct RA, on the (110) plane in the [ 112] direction. Four recrystallization-texture components were found to occur, with orientations corresponding to 40-deg rotations around [111 1 axes of the deformation texture. Reorientations of this type were already found in earlier work,3,4 where the presence of random nuclei could be reasonably assumed, but was not rigorously documented. The same orientation relationship was found also by Lucke and Liebmann, who actually measured the orientation dependence of boundary-migration rates in the recrystallization of A1 crystals slightly deformed in tension.5,6 The occurrence in the recrystallization texture of only four of the eight crystallographically equivalent orientations of the type referred to above remained unexplained,1,2 although it was clearly not a result of the absence of suitable nuclei. Recently Burgers7 suggested that this effect may be due to the aniso-tropy of boundary mobility observed2'6; it was found that the recrystallized grains of the 40-deg [111]-rotated type grow much faster in directions perpendicular to the [ 111] they have in common with the matrix than parallel to this direction, i.e., the tilt boundaries have much higher mobility than the twist boundaries. . F. W. SPERR, JR.,* Pittsburgh, Pa.--Mr. Malcolmson states that the Carbocoal process produces ammonium sulfate in excess of that normally recovered in the ordinary byproduct coke process. Table 3 indicates that 20,000 to 25,000 lb. of sulfate of ammonia are obtained in carbonizing 1000 tons of Clinchfield coal. This is a high-grade coal and yields from 26 to 28 lb. of ammonium sulfate per ton in a modern byproduct coke oven. On the next page, 21 lb. is stated as the yield of ammonium sulfate per short ton of raw coal; this is less than the average production from any well operated byproduct coke-oven plant treating coal of the character usually coked, in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The statement as to the comparative yields of light oil is somewhat misleading in view of the results obtained during the past year or two by the more modern byproduct coke plants. The plants put in operation by the H. Koppers Co., during the past two years, are producing about 3.5 gal. of light oil per short ton of coal, and several of these plants are producing more than 4 gal. per ton. The yield of pure toluene runs from 0.45 gal. to 0.55 gal. per ton. .The quality of the light oil .obtained from the Carbocoal process is of much greater importance than would be inferred by one not closely familiar with the subject. The presence of paraffins in the benzol and toluol fractions seriously detracts from their commercial value; the benzol and toluol fractions derived fro in the Carbocoal process contain about 50 per cent, of paraffins. It should be thoroughly understood what these paraffins are. They are simply hydrocarbons that go to make up ordinary petroleum, and if a successful method for the removal of paraffins from benzol and toluol has been developed, this can at once be applied to several well known processes by which benzol and toluol can be made directly from petroleum, which have as yet been total failures on account of the contamination of these products by paraffins.

The Hidden Dome gas field, situated in Washakie County, Wyoming, was discovered Sept. 26, 1917. Subsequently five additional gas wells were completed and a large reserve was developed. For a number of years this field completely supplied the domestic market at Basin and Greybull, as well as the refinery at the latter town, and it is still supplying gas in small amounts to this market. Production is obtained from the sands of the Frontier formation at depths ranging from 1000 to 1500 ft. The original rock pressure was 725 Ib. and initial production ranged from 4,000,000 to 28,000,000 cu. ft. per day per well. Porosity of the sand, determined from the size of the productive area and the amount of gas recovered, is over 18 per cent. Area and Management It is estimated that the productive area is about 640 acres. Its outline is indicated on Fig. 5, on which are also shown the locations of holes drilled on the structure and the area of unit operation. The unit area is owned by the Ohio Oil Co. and development and operation have been by this company. No productive well has been completed outside this area. The entire area was Government land filed on under the placer mining law. Results of Unit Operation With six producing wells, or an average of one to each 160 acres, the pool is completely developed. Location of the wells was made with respect to structural conditions plus the requirement that at least one well be drilled on each 160-acre placer claim. Perhaps a somewhat more uniform spacing of the wells might have been accomplished and one well eliminated, but it must be borne in mind that the holes, on account of their shallow depth, were not expensive and that the object was to develop as reliable a reserve as possible. There is no cause to suspect that these holes have not adequately drained the reservoir and there is every reason to think that any additional wells, which might have been drilled under diversified ownership and operation, would have been an economic waste. The benefits of proration of oil production were perhaps more concretely realized in 1932 than at any time since the oil industry adopted nation-wide production control. Reduced output of crude petroleum, which brought the daily average of the United States down to approximately 2,000,000 bbl. from a peak in 1931 of more than 2,600,000, had a telling effect on the trend of oil prices. Mid-Continent crude was advanced in price from 776, for 36-gravity oil, to $1.04 a barrel. California crude, of 26-gravity at Signal Hill, moved forward from 736 to 976 a barrel. Pennsylvania crude, the only exception to the upward trend, rose in price from $1.82 per barrel to $2.02, only to react to $1.72. This was due to local conditions which necessitated an adjustment to overcome competition from other areas of the United States. East Texas continued to exert a far-reaching influence on the crude and gasoline market during 1932. Despite the fact that oil prices were advanced in most fields, large quantities of oil were produced in East Texas in violation of state proration orders, and sold in the market at prices considerably below official postings. This created competitive conditions in the gasoline market that were felt by all refining centers of the United States. The quantity of gasoline produced from cheap East Texas crude was not large, but the volume was sufficient to influence prices in practically all sections of the country. Thus, while the industry's' economic situation showed visible improvement statistically, the unreported and unseen statistics originating in East Texas proved to be an insurmountable obstacle to the economic betterment that was otherwise apparently justified. Somewhat surprising to many was the fact that gasoline consumption was maintained within 10 per cent of the preceding year. Domestic consumption showed only a net decline under 1931 of about 8.5 per cent; exports dropped in volume to the extent of about 23 per cent. One of the numerous requirements of many grades of present- day steel is that the steel shall be free from non-metallic inclusions. These inclusions may be composed of oxides, sulphides, complex oxy- sulphides, and nitrides, which enter the steel with the furnace charge, result from sulphur absorption from the furnace gases, or are formed in the steel during the deoxidation process. Although few' data are available which indicate in any quantitative manner the specific effects of inclusions in steel, there is a large mass of circumstantial evidence which points to the advisability of producing steel free from these impurities for many purposes. At the present time there is a growing feeling among metallurgists that non-metallic inclusions should be divided into two distinct types: (I) those readily visible under the microscope at ordinary magnifications; and (2) those in colloidal suspension or in solid solution. Both types are profoundly influenced by the character of the charge, the manipulation of the furnace slag, and the method of deoxidation. The work described in this bulletin deals primarily with inclusions visible under the microscope at ordinary magnifications, but the steels made by the various methods of deoxidation are being used LO study certain effects which may be ascribed to the second classification, named above. This latter work will be the subject of further bulletins on the effect of deoxidation practice on the physical properties of the steels involved.

Staunton then read an important paper on The Influence of California Oil on the Mining Industry of the West. In this he touched upon the uses of oil as a fuel for generating power, especially in connection with the Diesel engine. This paper was discussed it some length by J. F. Mitchell-Roberts, R. B. Moran, F. H. Asbury and L. D. Godshall. The Chair then introduced Robert B. Moran of the California State Mining Bureau, Deputy Supervisor of Gas and Oil, for the' Los Angeles . This paper will be printed in the November number of the Bulletin. A lively discussion followed the reading of the paper.

On April 17, the John Fritz Medal, the award of which the presiding officer, Col. John J. Carty, characterized as "the highest honor which can be conferred on an engineer in America," was presented to. J. Waldo Smith "for his most distinguished services in civil engineering, and particularly in connection with the work on the great aqueduct, which has just been completed." Col. Carty spoke very briefly of the origin of the Medal and the method of awarding it, mentioning the names of the twelve men to whom it has been awarded in former years, and then introduced Mr. Nelson P. Lewis, Vice-president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and for many years Chief Engineer of the Board of Estimate of the City of New York, who is an old colleague and fellow-engineer of Mr. Smith. Mr. Lewis said, in part: Mr. Smith is so well known that an extended review of his professional activities will be unnecessary, but a brief outline of the development of a conspicuously successful hydraulic engineer may not be out of place. It would be difficult to find a better instance of the success which is quite sure to result from persistent devotion to all phases of a particular line of engineering work. It began in his boyhood, when, as a lad of 15, he eagerly availed himself of such opportunities as were afforded to help in the construction of a waterworks system for his home town in New England. It was a very modest plant, consisting of a small reservoir and pumping station, and about 4 miles of pipe. Probably it was the most important improvement the town

COLCOCK JONES A meeting of the Southern California Local Section, in honor of the presence of Secretary Bradley Stoughton, was held at luncheon in a private dining room of the Sierra Madre Club on Friday, May 21, 1915, 27 members and guests being present. In the absence, through illness, of the Chairman, Dr. Comstock, the vice-Chairman, Seeley W. Mudd, presided. After the luncheon, Secretary Stoughton made a short address on the activities of the Institute. George S. Rice, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, who was present, then spoke on the activities of his Bureau. Local Secretary F. J. H. Merrill gave a description of the activities of the Southern California Section and its progress, and reported the latter as substantial and its condition as very good. KIRCHEN, FREDERICK BRADSHAW, C. B. LAKENAN, TASKER L. ODDIE. The formation of the Nevada Section was originally suggested by Professor F. C. Lincoln, who had discussed the subject with Mr. William L. Saunders when the latter was President of the Institute. Professor Lincoln sought the assistance of the Nevada Mine Operators' Association, whose Executive Committee constituted itself a Committee on Organization, and authority for the establishment of a Nevada Section to include the entire State was secured from the Board of Directors of the Institute. The formal installation took place at 10 A.M. on May 18, Mr. William L. Saunders officiating. The Honorable Emmet D.. Boyle, Governor of Nevada (and a member of the Nevada Section), made the address of welcome. IT has been recognized for many years that dis-persed particles have great value in raising the creep resistance of metallic alloys. In fact, some of the most successful high-temperature alloys owe their superiority to this factor above all others. A recent observation by Glen1," indicates that even better high-temperature resistance to deformation results in alloys capable of two successive precipitation reactions. The ramifications of this finding are of great interest. Unfortunately, our understanding of the reasons for such notable improvements has not kept pace with technical developments. In an effort to uncover some of the basic facts governing strengthening by particles, a program was initiated at the Battelle Memorial Institute with the primary goal of comparing creep strengths in single-phase and two-phase (precipitating) alloys. The effects of precipitation from solid solution on the creep properties of alloys are generally such that the resistance to creep is increased. However, if alloys are heat treated to different degrees of hardness before creep testing, it is often found that those possessing the maximum hardness initially do not necessarily have the maximum creep resistance. Depending on the stresses and temperatures involved other structures may prove more desirable. Considerations of the above nature indicate the importance of defining the initial state of the alloy. Here, it was decided to start with quenched single- phase alloys in which precipitation and creep deformation proceed concurrently. Equipment and Experimental Procedures Preparation of the Specimens—Four 25 lb ingots were prepared from 99.999 pct Cu and 99.996 pct Al to compositions of 1, 2, 3, and 4 wt pct Cu. Spec-trographic and chemical analyses are listed in Table I. After heat treatments and intermediate reductions, the alloys were cold rolled to 1/8 in. thick sheet. The final cold reductions amounted to 50, 40, 20, and 10 pct for the 1, 2, 3, and 4 pct Cu alloys, respectively. The specimens for creep testing were machined into tensile flats 7 in. long, 3/4 in. wide (at the shoulders), and 1/8 in. thick. The reduced sections were 1/4 in. wide and 21/2 in. long. After heat treatments at 540°C to an ASTM grain size of 1 1, the specimens were quenched into water at room temperature, then electropolished in a glacial acetic acid and perchloric acid solution. The gage marks were Knoop impressions placed 2 in. apart on the reduced sections. Blanks of 1 x 1 in, were cut from the same sheets for the age hardening runs and were given the same grain size heat treatments. The specimens and blanks were stored in a refrigerator at —40°C until needed for testing. Creep Measurements—Creep tests were conducted in a constant temperature room which was maintained at 26° ±1°C. A split-type, hinged, vertical-tube furnace was mounted on a horizontal track so that the specimen could be enclosed suddenly. The semi-annual meeting of the Montana Section was held at the Silver Bow Club, Butte, Montana, on Friday, Nov. 16, at 8 p. m.; this was a postponement of the regular October meeting because of conflict in date with the St. Louis meeting of the Institute. An informal dinner was served to 68 members and guests. After dinner, Chairman W. C. Siderfin called the meeting to order. The minutes of the annual meeting, of Feb. 2, 1917, and the special meeting of May 21, 1917, were read and approved. C. W. Goodale led the discussion with "Notes on the St. Louis Meeting." He was followed by J. H. Warner who spoke on " The Joplin and Miami Districts," and by J. L: Bruce, Alexander Leggatt, N. B. Braly, and E. B. Young, the latter speaking on the work of the War Minerals Committee; and on the Cosden Oil Refinery at West Tuba, Okla. R. H. Sales reviewed briefly the manganese situation. E. N. Norris presented a paper on "Fire Proofing of Mine Shafts by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co." This resulted in interesting discussion by C. L. Berrien, C. E. Nighman, N. B. Braly, W. B. Daly, B. H. Dunshee, and J. J. Carrigan. C. L. Berrien and C. E. Nighman presented their papers on "Fire Extinction by Hydraulic Filling." In view of the late hour, discussion was waived. The executive committee, by unanimous consent, decided to request written discussion of the above papers to be presented at the next meeting, in February. B. B. Thayer spoke interestingly on the work of the Naval Consulting Board, and referred to the arsenic situation. Spencer Miller, also a, member of the Naval Consulting Board, entertained the-meeting with a vivid description of the method of "Coaling Battleships at Sea." Robert Sticht of Tasmania, in a short talk, spoke feelingly of his relations with the United States. At a late hour adjournment ended a most successful and interesting meeting. E. B. AT A meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute held in London on May 6, Dr. J. E. Stead was formally inducted into the chair by Dr. Eugene Schneider, the retiring president. After presenting the Bessemer gold medal to Harry Brearley, of Sheffield, England, for his distinguished services to the British steel industry, Doctor Stead delivered his presidential address, a masterly review of iron and steel making progress during the past 50 years, emphasizing economy in production, and pointing out suggestions for future improvement. A considerable portion of the address was devoted to blast-furnace operation.

On July 15, 16, and 17, 1918, through the good offices of Secretary Stoughton, and the courtesy of War Department officials, Columbia Section was able to secure a series of moving pictures which were presented under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association.. The title was "The Way Out," representing the activities of individuals who had lost an arm, a leg, or both, yet whose apparent misfortunes were made the stepping stones to advancement in various human activities. The exhibitions were given at Natatorium Park in the evening, each of the three performances being attended by 1000 per-sons. Later the films were shipped to Kellogg, Idaho, where they were shown in the principal playhouse one evening to a full house. On July 31, 1918, the Columbia Section participated in the luncheon and other entertainment in honor of Alfred D. Flinn, Secretary of the Engineering Council, who made a trip through the country to meet different classes of engineers, members of the National Societies, for whom he had a message. The entertainment was under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association, Mr. Peter Mogensen presiding. The luncheon was held in the Elizabethan Room, Davenport Hotel, at noon, 35 engineers being present, of whom about one-third were our members.

SIDERFIN The semi-annual meeting of the Montana Section was held at the Silver Bow Block, Butte, Mont., on Friday evening, Oct. 8, 1915. An informal, subscription dinner, at $1.50 a plate, was enjoyed inn' the early evening, by 62 members and guests. After dinner a technical session was held, and a paper entitled Preliminary Outline of Paper on Mines in the Boulder Batholith was presented by J. A. Grimes, who is joint author of the paper, with Paul Billingsley. The paper elicited a lively and interesting discussion, in which a score of members took part. After the reading of the paper the rest of the evening was spent socially. D. C. BARD, Secretary.
