The effects of solutes on the distribution of two-dimensional configurations of grains in zone-refined tin have been studied. When solutes with partition coefficients (ko) greater than unity are added, three-sided pains become more prevalent and the growth law changes. It is shown by electron-Probe micro-analysis that a solute buildup occurs ahead of a moving grain boundary when ko > 1. It has been found recently1, 2 that solutes with partition coefficients greater than unity have a larger retarding effect on grain growth than solutes with k, less than unity. ko is defined as the ratio of the concentration of solute in the solid to the concentration of solute in the liquid with which the solid is in equilibrium. Niessen and winegard2 have suggested that this effect is probably due to the complex shape changes which occur during the process of grain growth and that no theory based on single boundary motion3-5 can explain the results. They suggested that the dissociation of the unstable fourfold junction was delayed in alloys where ko was greater than 1 because the boundaries at the junction had to move into a region of high solute concentration. If indeed this mechanism were correct, it was felt that not only would the dissociation of fourfold junctions be affected by the solute buildup ahead of the boundaries, but the collapse of three-sided grains would be impaired. These combined effects would naturally lead to a modification in the distribution of the number of sides per grain seen on a two-dimensional section. The present investigation was undertaken to test these hypotheses by examining the grain-growth process in detail. EXPERIMENTS The Distribution of Grain Configurations in Zone-Refined Tin as Seen on a Two-Dimensional Section. Following the method of Bolling and Winegard,6 zone-refined tin was cast into button-shaped specimens and, subsequently, plastically deformed under a drop hammer at room temperature. The resulting flat coin-shaped samples were annealed at 200°C, some for 50 sec and others for 100 sec. The specimens were then examined to determine the distribution of the number of sides per grain, i.e., the num- ber of crystals adjacent to any particular grain in the section. For simplicity, the grains were classified as three-sided, four-sided, and so forth; this concept is schematically illustrated in Fig. 1. As indicated by smith,' it was necessary to examine every grain within an enclosed area to obtain a proper distribution of the relative frequency of each type. This paper is based upon a review of studies of mostly Canadian mining companies in Chile, northern Canada, Tanzania, Guatemala, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In spite of often well-meaning efforts most mining firms produce wealth in developing areas that largely benefit those immediately involved, sometimes neighboring communities, and often those in the governing strata. Typically mining takes place in enclaves and fosters enclave development, rather than the kind of inclusive wealth development favored by the recently UN published Inclusive Wealth Report. One way by which mining operations can foster more inclusive wealth development is to adopt much broader approaches towards the construction of the various physical and social infrastructures ? roads, water, electricity, health services, schools, security ? required for their own operations by collaborating with diverse regional, provincial, and/or national agencies and businesses to develop these infrastructures for larger populations and areas beyond the immediate sites where they are operating. Established mining firms can also foster more inclusive wealth development by establishing more formal, collaborative relationships with artisanal miners.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 177,000-acre Secesh study area; most of the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel mapped and sampled several hundred mine and prospect workings; 1,715 rock, soil, and placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 25 mi east-northeast of McCall, Idaho, in the Payette National Forest. Five mining districts extend into or are adjacent to the study area. There have been more than 3,000 mining claims located inside the study area, 884 are current. In excess of $17 million (historical value) in placer and lode gold has reportedly been produced from the Warren district alone. The study area contains gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, and antimony. At least six properties that would be in the proposed wilderness contain gold resources; more than 18 million tons averaging 0.038 oz/ton gold have been identified. Additional resources may be located at 4 other localities. The 4th of July mine is currently producing gold/silver/lead ore. Similar resources may be located on at least 3 other properties. Placer samples from the study area contained up to 0.34 oz gold/yd3 ($120/yd3). The samples are representative of relatively small occurrences and do not constitute resources; small quantities of gold may be recovered by recreational placer miners.

"SKSTM oxygen bottom blowing smelting technology was developed by SKS-ENFI at SKS Smelter, Hunan in the 1990s to replace the conventional sintering process and thus to meet the high national EHS standard for lead.Since then, two major milestones have been achieved:1. Since 2002, the SKS oxygen bottom blowing smelting-blast furnace reduction has been in operation at SKS, YGL, Chizhou smelter etc. Now in China, about 50% of the lead (4.2 millions t/year) is produced using SKS process; and2. Since 2008, the blast furnace has been replaced by direct reduction of molten rich lead slag at YGJ smelter, which is more energy-efficient since no slag cooling is required. This two stage process (SKS Oxidation- Direct Reduction) is named as the YGL process.Since 2008, numerous technological innovations have been implemented in the furnace design, process control, and maintenance at YGL. The plant has been successfully demonstrated its unique excellent performances on all aspects from processing capacity, product quality, energy reduction, cost reduction and emission reduction. The purpose of this report is to update all the improvements with proven tracks.Meanwhile, a preliminary comparison on the following aspects between the YGL process and other similar technologies has been discussed:1. Plant design and operating conditions;2. Mass and heat balances, metal (Pb, Ag) recovery;3. Consumables, oxygen gun and refractory lining life;4. Energy consumption and operating costs;5. Sulfur capture and emission reduction etc.It is concluded that the modified SKSTM process is a clean SO2-free emission process. The process is characteristic of other features such as no extra fuel addition, low capital with a small foot-print design, low OPEX, high throughput, easy operation, long refractory lining life and high productivity (95%+ on line time annually). It offers an alternative cost-effective technology for lead smelting industry."

"At an average of 90.3% (for the period of 1 January 2009 to 30 September 2011), Zincor’s zinc recovery was well below the industry standard of 96%. The losses through the residues, in particular the iron residue, were the biggest contributors to the overall zinc loss. It was believed that this loss could be decreased with the implementation of seed recycling. A plant trial was run to test the implementation of a seed recycle. The rate of seed addition through recycle was increased over a 4-week period. The presence of seed decreased the insoluble zinc loss by providing additional surface area for iron to precipitate onto, and reducing coating of unleached neutralising agent. The soluble zinc loss was also decreased at low and moderate seed recycle volumes. The improvement was attributed to agglomeration growth of the recycled particles, which improves the dewatering characteristics of the precipitate. In contrast, the soluble zinc loss increased at high seed recycle rates. This result was attributed to particle crowding and a low wash ratio.INTRODUCTION The Zincor refinery, which closed in December 2011, was situated just outside of Springs in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and employed the conventional Roast-Leach-Electrowin process, which accounts for 75 to 80% of the annual primary zinc production in the world. The refinery fed up to 220 000 t/a of zinc sulphide concentrate. The major portion of the raw material was sourced in Southern Africa from the Rosh Pinah and Black Mountain mines. Between 20 000 and 40 000 t/a of material was imported to make up the deficit and to improve the grade of the feed material. The iron contained in the zinc concentrates, at an average of 6.03% (for the period of 1 January 2009 to 30 September 2011), resulted in the formation of zinc ferrite during roasting, which is insoluble under atmospheric leach conditions. At Zincor, most of the zinc ferrite was dissolved in the residue treatment plant at elevated temperature and high acid strength. The leach liquor from this aggressive leach contained between 15 to 30 g/L of iron, mostly in the ferric form, and was known as the hot iron solution (HIS). The presence of iron in the liquor had an adverse effect on the zinc operation, particularly on the current efficiency in the electrowinning circuit. Therefore the iron needed complete removal."

THE value of chemical research has been so thor¬oughly demonstrated in the last few decades that the general public has become "research-conscious" to an extent which allows the advertising agent and publicity man to make use of research as a selling point in his advertising campaigns. We thus see the advertisements of concerns in the most varied industries stressing the research which is back of their products. The reason for this "research-consciousness" of the general public. is primarily that the products of research have increasingly engaged public attention and have. revolutionized our daily life. When we. reverse the flight of .time and imagine ourselves-in the century previous to our own, we find that we are .without the automobile, the radio, the improved telephone and electric light, refrigerated transportation, the airplane, X-rays, and many other things now taken for granted. A generation ago we find gloomy prophets foretelling the certain over-population .of the world within a few decades and an insufficiency of food due to lack of the fixed nitrogen which is now so plentifully ours.

The association is a national organization and operates through local, sectional, or State chapters in mining, petroleum, and allied industries. Gold mineralisation at Porgera is inferred to have been derived from a deep differentiated magmatic source which is capped by a series of (now tilted) inward dipping sills and stocks, which comprise the Porgera Intrusive Complex. An arc normal transfer structure provides a conduit, at tile intersection with an arc parallel structure, into which basic magma derived from tile deep melting of mantle material has been emplaced. Two phases of mineralisation display an association with late stage feldspar porphyry intrusives. Stage I carbonate-base metal-style gold mineralisation occurs as early quartz-sericite, then massive sulphide and late zoned Mn-Fe-Mg-Ca carbonate vein/breccias. Magmatic fluids derived from the deep magma source, are interpreted to have migrated along me margin of a feeder stock to the sills, and south to Waruwari. Stage II epithermal Au-Ag quartz-style gold mineralisation occurs as early fluidised breccias and carbonate veining, followed by zoned quartz-roscoelite-carbonate-gold vein/breccias, and late carbonate and/or sulphate open space infill. Magmatic fluids are interpreted to have utilised the same plumbing system as the late stage feldspar porphyry intrusive, and then migrated into the Roamane Fault which was dilated by; dextral rotation on elements of the transfer structure, normal faulting, and refraction around the competent footwall hornblende diorite. Bonanza gold is localised in a jog in the Roamane Fault, hangingwall splits and at intersections with cross structures. Bulk low grade Stage I gold has been deposited by the mixing of magmatic fluids with cool gas condensate waters, whereas high grade Stage II gold mineralisation resulted from the rapid quenching of mineralised magmatic fluids by oxygenated groundwaters.

MANY fields have been zoned by nature with shales and intermediate waters between oil zones. Limitations thus imposed have been the basis on which the field was developed. In contrast thereto, in the Ventura Avenue Field, nature proved more generous. Always expecting to find such similar limitations, operators drilled deeper and deeper into the oil zone without finding any distinctive shale bodies other that the Gosnell shale and only one intermediate water, which became the point below which the final water shut-off of each well was made. Thus, on top of the structure, about 3300 ft. of oil-bearing zone has been penetrated below this intermediate w9ter-a distance of 4000 ft. below the Gosnell shale. At first it seemed that the greater the penetration in the zone, the better the well. The error of this assumption became evident

Too often, a mine’s operations, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, processing, etc., are considered independent steps, rather then a continuous process. In fact, these are interdependent operations with each step in the process having an impact on subsequent operations. If the effectiveness of the drilling and blasting operations can be improved, they will impact the entire mining process. Some of the resulting improvements include: level benches on grade; fragmentation and diggability with the result being reduced loading times; haul cycles improvements; and the crushing and milling operations will be more efficient and less energy consumed. Thunderbird refers to this as “Drill to Mill” information cycle or process. This paper focuses on two of the technological enhancements Thunderbird has added to its drill monitors that allow the mines to impact the “Drill to Mill” concept. These enhancements are: incorporating global positioning satellites into drill monitors; and radio off-loading of data. Thunderbird is part of the Integrated Mining Systems (IMS) alliance. IMS offers the mining industry the most comprehensive line of monitoring and navigation products available today for mobile mine equipment. In addition to Thunderbird’s drill monitors and GPS systems, the product line includes: Fleet Management Systems for trucks and loaders; dragline and shovel monitors; GPS based navigation systems for shovels, dozers and other mobile equipment; and surveying systems. IMS uses common communication systems, operating systems, and hardware components in order to provide a truly Integrated Mining System.

Wire Bonding is the dominant IC interconnection process presently used in the semiconductor assembly industry (1). The flexibility, adaptability and cost of wire bonding will continue to keep it as the key process for the interconnection of integrated circuits to substrates. However, wire bonding still has certain technological hurdles to overcome if it is to continue following the semiconductor roadmap (2). Particular issues which need to be addressed include low overall tensile strength, low elastic modulus, low shear per unit area and mechanical loop stability of Gold based micro-alloys. The ability to produce ?Deformation Process Metal-Metal Matrix Composites? (DMMCs) is based upon the deformation nature of immissible metallic systems. For reference, the Gold (Au)-Molybdenum (Mo) phase diagram is shown in Figure 1 (3). By inspection of the diagram, Au has a very low solubility for Mo, while Mo has essentially no solubility for Au. This is the metallurgical analog of oil and water. In the Au-Mo case, this is particularly troublesome when producing precursor ingots of the alloy to be formed into wire products. In Table 1, the melting points and densities are shown for Au and Mo. As shown, the melting point of Mo is significantly higher than Au, and is very close to the boiling point of Au (2856°C). However, Au?s density is higher than that of Mo. As such, conventional casting techniques are not suitable, since solid Mo would float off the surface of an Au melt thus depleting the matrix of its alloy addition. In this work, two-phase composite wires were produced by deformation processing to develop an interconnection wire with elevated tensile strength, modulus and shear to those commonly available in the market (4). This technology has been used previously in the production of high strength electrical conductors particularly for high field pulsed magnets (5).

[SECRETARY'S NOTE.-As a result of this discussion, an expression of opinion covering all points of unanimous agreement was adopted and signed by members of the Institute party as individuals. This statement, which was printed in the Bulletin of December, 1910, is reprinted below, as an introduction to ,the detailed report of the discussion. It should be clearly understood that it does not constitute an official declaration by the Institute, the rules of which forbid any such action. At the New Haven meeting of February, 1909, a free discussion of the plan of the canal took place, in which the critics of the present scheme had full opportunity to state their views. That discussion was continued at considerable length in the newspapers ; but the Institute was never committed to either side. In this latter instance, the situation is precisely similar. Certain members and guests of the Institute, having had the advantage of later developments and of personal inspection, have expressed the conclusions at which they have arrived on their own responsibility ; and these conclusions are published by the Institute, subject to further discussion, like any other part of its proceedings. The general statement referred to contained a promise that the full discussion, of which it was a result, would be subsequently printed ; and this promise is fulfilled, so far as practicable, in the subjoined report, concerning which I beg to offer the following explanations: 1. It is made up of the remarks of the members of our party, as subsequently written out and mailed to the Secretary. 2. The concept of disposing of liquid industrial wastes by deep-well injection is not a new one. Brines associated with crude oil long have been disposed of in this manner, with the additional benefit of aiding secondary oil recovery. More recently, with the expansion of nuclear energy, the lethal, highly radioactive wastes which are by-products of the fission process have created severe disposal problems. During the past ten years, a variety of industries have resorted to subsurface disposal, some of the details of which are given elsewhere (1,2). The list reveals wide variations in injection rate, pumping pressure, cost, and waste disposition. Included are successful installations in Western Pennsylvania.

Many accepted and useful methods have been developed and used for pillar design. Each method has its own particular strengths and weaknesses. Three methods addressed in this paper are; empirical, analytical, and numerical. Each of these methods have their place in pillar design. Analytical methods result in close approximation of the ideal pillar (most economical, stable, or yielding) and are suitable for use in final mine design and in analyzing existing problems. BOYD uses the analytical method to develop site specific mine pillars design equations. An analytical method, one of many developed by BOYD, is presented here and is based on the procedure used by Wilson (1) and others in development of their empirical equations.

El yacimiento de Zafranal —proyecto de pórfidos de cobre y oro ubicado en la región Arequipa, Perú— en sí mismo ha penetrado en lo que parece ser un salto dextral sobre una estructura del SFIC. A nivel de yacimiento, se ha mapeado una serie de fallas pronunciadas WNW en la zona mineralizada principal, consistentes con la transtensión dextral inferida. Esta estructura de fallas se trazó en 3-D a partir de las zonas de gubias identificadas en la fotografía de testigos, método que permitió elaborar un modelo estructural de forma rápida y con consistencia interna. La cinemática de las vetas y los patrones de afloramiento trazados generalmente coinciden con las estructuras interpretadas. El movimiento dextral inferido en el SFIC en el Cretácico Superior es consistente con un vector de convergencia de placas hacia el norte, y puede ser utilizado para identificar targets estructurales para sistemas de edad similar, tanto en el piamonte como en la cordillera.

INTRODUCTION Today, conventional raise boring is an accepted method of development in underground mines and on major construction projects. Over the years that this technique, and its associated machines and tools, have been under development, many articles have been written on the subject. To a great extent, these papers have reported operating results of one or more specific projects or have been generalized reviews of state-of-the-art machines and tools. This paper is intended as a review of the technique from an operational standpoint. Conventional raise boring, as opposed to the related variants box hole drilling and underground blast hole drilling, is a two step process consisting of the pilot hole drilling and reaming cycles. This author has covered the subject of pilot hole drilling in another article (1) . A good review of the current machines and equipment has been presented by Monroe (2) and an overall review of this entire technology was published by E&MJ (3) and Mining Journal, April, 1983 (4) . The subject of the reaming cycle is presented here together with some of the technical aspects of how the drilling tools are intended to be used. A major highlight of Fiscal Year 1993 is the completion of a new research facility dedicated to the advancement of robotics research and development. This new facility brings to the U.S. Bureau of Mines one of the largest and most unique facilities of its kind in the world. Located at the Bureau's Pittsburgh Research Center, the facility consolidates under one roof, all of the resource requirements of a first class automation and robotics research program. The Mining Robotics Development Center (MRDC) is the result of a major renovation of a large under-utilized warehouse-type structure and brings together the laboratories and offices previously housed in five separate buildings scattered throughout the Pittsburgh Research Center's 238-acre site. This new facility will support the computer-assisted mining research program, a high priority, multi-million dollar program that is expected to have a high impact on the health and safety of miners and coal productivity.

In the preparation of illustrations to accompany reports of investigations concerning particle shapes of various natural and manufactured materials proposed for use as fine aggretates in concrete structures, it was found that stereoscopic views of such materials presented the information much more effectively than the usual two-dimensional photographs. With the whole-hearted cooperation of the Photographic Section, a technique was developed in the petrographic laboratory of the Concrete Research Division, U.S. Corps of Engineers, at Clinton, Miss., for simple and rapid preparation of paired stereoscopic photographs and micrographs. The method requires only equipment which is usually part of the general stock of any laboratory, and it is adaptable for all purposes in which three-dimensional views would be found superior to ordinary photographs.
