"Omai Gold Mines is a large scale open pit gold mining operation located in central Guyana, South America with a 12,000 tonne per day milling facility. Mill operations were initiated in December 1992 with commercial production beginning in January 1993. The entire operation employs approximately 120 expatriates and some 800 Guyanese nationals and is expected to produce in excess of 250,000 ounces of gold per year. The total mineable reserves contain 2.5 million ounces of gold with a projected mine life of twelve years.The milling circuits feature an SABC grinding circuit, gravity concentration and a conventional CIP gold recovery circuit. This paper will review the mill start up and ""run-in"" phase during the first year of operation. Emphasis will be placed on descriptions of start up problems and circuit modifications, mill performance trends in 1993, and personnel training and development. An outlook for 1994 is also given.IntroductionOmai Gold Mines is a large scale, open pit gold mining operation located in the Potaro district of Guyana, South America, some 160 kilometers south of the capital city Georgetown. Although there are numerous small scale gold mining ventures in Guyana, particularly with the dredging operations on the rivers, Omai is the first hard rock, open pit mine to be developed in the country. At present, this mining operation is one of the largest gold mines in South America.The Omai gold deposit has been exploited for over one hundred years. In the late 1800's, a German syndicate used hydraulicing with subsequent gravimetric separators such as sluice boxes and trommel screens to recover gold from saprolite, a soft, oxidized, claylike mineral which covers much of the claim area. Through the early 1900's and up until the 1950's, numerous mining companies including Anaconda Mining Co. Ltd. explored and drilled the Omai deposit but the technology and low gold price of the day made the reserve uneconomic to develop."

Modern mining consistently faces controversy. Public sentiment impacts the permitting and development of mines, so a quality public relations (PR) program for mining companies may improve society’s impression of the mining industry. Developing mines face more permitting challenges than operating mines, which stems from a lack of societal trust given the history of mining and its impact on the environment. Two case studies were selected based on the type of public controversy they face to demonstrate how pervasive permitting issues are in industry. Both Pebble Mine, owned by Northern Dynasty Minerals (NDM), and Black Butte, owned by Sandfire Resources America Inc (SRA), experienced difficulties with their water permitting due to potential risks their mine developments posed to local fish populations. Pebble has, to date, failed in all of their attempts to become permitted due to concern for the water and the fish. Black Butte dealt with the same problems, on a smaller scale, but was able to become permitted. These two mines will be discussed in detail including local history, mine setting, mining history in America, prevalent culture groups, technology development, and intercultural communication competence (ICC). The mining industry needs to evaluate its ICC skills since ICC directly determines the effectiveness of PR. Based on Barna’s Stumbling Blocks for intercultural communication, methods for improving the mining industry’s PR will be suggested in the hope of easing the permitting process for future mines by developing ICC.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 377 natural gas samples from 19 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 373 samples were collected during calendar year 1970. The remaining four samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting per-mission to publish the analyses were not received until 1970. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Twelve previous publications have presented the results of 9,050 gas analyses prior to 1970. INTRODUCTION Background Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of the largest cities of the world. As many as 33 million people live in Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures although the city occupies only 0.6% of the area of the country. The network of Metropolitan Expressways serves as a major artery for daily physical distribution in Tokyo. The Central Circular Route of the Metropolitan Expressway (MECCR) is located innermost among the three circular routes in Tokyo (Figure 1). Once completed, MECCR is expected to drastically mitigate traffic congestion in the central Tokyo area and provide drivers wider varieties of options in route selection. Alleviating congestion is estimated to reduce 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The eastern and northern sections and part of the western section of MECCR have been completed with the total length reaching 33 km. The western section will be extended southward by approximately 4 km in the spring of 2010. An 11-km-long western section of MECCR that is currently being constructed is composed mostly of tunnels. A large number of power supply, gas supply, telephone, drinking water and sewerage pipes have been placed under the Yamatedori avenue along which MECCR is being constructed. The shield tunneling method has therefore been adopted for constructing tunnels along the route. The method involves the advancement of a shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the ground simultaneously assembling segmental rings within the shield. The method not only enables the building of highway tunnels more quickly and efficiently than other methods but also minimizes the effects of construction work on the surrounding area and the environment. Constructing the tunnel using the conventional cut-and-cover method might have required large amounts of time and cost because relocating the numerous objects buried under the Yamatedori avenue might have been necessary during tunnel construction. It was also considered desirable to place the tunnel at a depth of 30 m or more from surface to prevent tunnel construction from adversely affecting railways because the tunnel was expected to cross eleven railways and subways. This is one of the reasons for selecting shield tunneling as an effective method. The shield tunneling method was finally adopted for a length of 7 km in the 11-km western section of MECCR. The shield tunneling method was also employed in the Ohashi Tunnel located southernmost in the 11-km western section of MECCR. This paper describes the construction of the Ohashi Shield Tunnel.

In underground blasting, the pull of the initial cut is the limiting factor for the success of the rest of the round. By improving the pull of the first cut, a critical step is made towards improving the entire round. This project attempted to optimize a burn cut’s effective pull by varying the depths of the relief holes in the burn. The effect of varying the depths of the relief holes was investigated, including depths longer than that of the cut’s charged holes. The overall objective was to consistently achieve greater pull than in a standard burn, using an identical amount of explosives. Increased pull results in savings of both time and cost in underground heading advance.

MIGRATOM is a third-generation PC-based computer program developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for geophysical tomography. Like its predecessors, BOMTOM and BOMCRATR, MIGRA TOM was developed to enable users to address a variety of mining-related problems by mathematically reconstructing the distribution of physical properties in a rock mass, using measurements of travel time or amplitude of wave energy propagated through the rock mass. Examples of applications include lithologic characterization, fracture detection, fluid monitoring, stress evaluation, and blast assessment. The resolution and accuracy of tomographic reconstructions generally depend very strongly on the geometry of source and receiver locations. In many practical applications, such as cross-borehole tomography, limited coverage results in nonunique reconstructions. MIGRATOM follows the precedent of BOMTOM and BOMCRATR in allowing the user to constrain the inversion, in order to reduce the nonuniqueness problem. A new approach to application of constraints implemented in MIGRATOM is based on fuzzy logic techniques. Refraction of wave energy is modeled in MIGRATOM using an approach based on Huygens' Principle. Propagation of a continuous wavefront is modeled as a constructive interference phenomenon, which obviates the shadow-zone problem that affects conventional ray-tracing calculations. MIGRATOM has been tested with both synthetic and field data sets.

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the 'AMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and Reconciliation' project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called `the propagation of error'.

Selection of the most suitable roadheaders (boom type tunnelling machines) for the galleries/tunnels to be excavated in certain rock and under known project conditions is important for avoiding problems during application. This research utilized a multiple attribute decision-making method and studied how this will be applied for the selection of boom-type excavation machines. The Cayirhan Coal Basin was used for selecting roadheaders using the analytical hierarchy process, which is one of the multiple attribute decision-making methods. To conclude, this study reveals that decision-making methods can be used in the process of selecting roadheaders for the excavation of galleries. The purpose of this paper is to cover in a general way the extent, geology, quality of product, working methods and trials of the coal mining industry. of New South Wales from 1946 to the present day, with particular reference to the Western field.It must be clearly understood that any opinions expressed are those of the author and not necessarily those of the Joint Coal Board.The extent of the Western coal field at the present stage of investigation may be said to be from a few miles east of Katoomha to a few miles north-west of the township of Ulan, the total distance being 150 miles.To the west of a line from the Western Highway from Lithgow through Wallerawang, PortIand, Tyldesley, Ben Bullen, Kandos and Rylstone, there are no signs of coal except for one or two outiiers in the neighbourhood of Portland. To the east of this line the coal-bearing areas extend to the seaboard approximately 80 miles to the east.GEOLOGY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COAL SEAMSThe Western coal measures belong to the Upper or Newcastle series, which have been correlated with the Sciritheru or lllawarra, and the North-western or Gunnedah measures. Being close to the margin of the coal basin the Western measures have an average thickness of only 200 ft. to 500 ft., or approximately one-half of the maximum development of the Newcastle measures. They are underlain by Upper Marine beds which in turn rest directly on Devonian rocks.

After an unsuccessful transfer from the laboratory to the pilot plant of galena flotation technology which used sodium metabisulphite and ethyl xanthate, laboratory flotation tests were conducted to identify any unusual variables which had a deleterious effect on the position of the lead rougher grade recovery curve for Hilton and Mount Isa silver-lead-zinc ores. Two variables (pulp temperature and contact time for ethyl xanthate and sodium metabisulphite) had important deleterious effects.The findings allowed a successful transfer of the laboratory process to a pilot plant scale process. The effect of temperature was important because the higher temperature (40°C) in the pilot plant pulp increased significantly the rate of reaction between ethyl xanthate and sodium metabisulphite. In the laboratory process at 20 to 25°C, the reaction rate was lower and did not interfere significantly with the process. The contact time for the two reagents was also important in the pilot plant scale process because of the higher reaction rate at 40°C.To employ ethyl xanthate in the pilot plant process, special precautions were required. Further, a collector (Aerofloat 241) from the dithiophosphate family was used successfully in the pilot plant process.

"Two analysis tools which have been applied to problems in industrial flotation processes are the application of kinetics and detailed mineralogical or liberation data, both on a size-by-size basis. This paper describes practical examples of the application of kineticsto examination of the entrainment recovery mechanism, the retardation of valuable minerals at the commencement of flotation sections and the resolution of problems related to valuable species with reduced rate constants at the end of sections. Examples of the usefulness of size-by-size liberation data for monthly composite samples of products from a concentrator are also described.IntroductionMuch of the published industrial flotation data on the behaviour of minerals in various size fractions have been obtained from specially conducted surveys with a duration of several hours. Such data are very valuable and provide a record of the behaviour of the entire flotation plant or sections during the interval of the survey. Some examples from the literature can be cited Cameron et al. (1971), Lynch et al. (1981), Frew (1982). Less attention has been given to the value of complementary sized data derived from compositing shift or daily inventory samples over an interval of one or several weeks with repetition of the procedure at the completion of each interval. Mineralogical point count data of the size fractions of such samples and data interpretation are rare in the literature.Kinetic data on the behaviour of valuable and gangue minerals in various size fractions have been reported often for flotation banks. In the experience 0 f the writer, there has been a tendency among operating metallurgists to ascribe problems in the flotation process to rate constant values for gangue minerals which were believed to be unsatisfactorily high. Less attention has been paid to the value for the rate constant for the valuable mineral over the length of a particular bank.Examples of the types of data which were mentioned previously have been obtained from the lead-zinc concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited. The various types of data have been collected to evaluate their worth in order to provide relevant information for both research and operational aspects of the plant."

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The modified basinal brines, containing partly oxidised sulphur species, scavenged metals from basement rocks and sediments and transported them through the host rock, which contained local concentrations of organic matter. Reacting in various ways with the mineralising solution as temperatures at the sites of mineralisation changed, organic matter caused the precipitation and dissolution of a variety of minerals in the ore zones; it was organic matter that caused all of these reactions to occur at the same sites. Thus all components of the mineralising fluid - salt, water, heat, sulphur and metals - were obtained within the ore district. The siting of the mineral districts was related to the locations of faults through U- and Th-enriched granites beneath sediments containing basinal brines, and the locations of ore deposits within the districts were controlled by local concentrations of organic matter

"The Ventura County Medical Center Hospital Replacement Wing project consists of the construction of a 2- to 3-story building with a basement encompassing the entire footprint and two corridors connecting the new hospital wing to existing buildings. The site is located in the Ventura Basin where strong ground shaking has been observed during moderate to large earthquakes on nearby faults. The upper 90 feet of the soil consists of loose to medium dense finegrained sands and low plasticity silts that are potentially susceptible to liquefaction, seismic densification, and hydroconsolidation. Ground settlement associated with a large seismic event on a nearby fault is estimated at 20 to 26 inches. To account for the anticipated ground settlement, auger pressure grouted (APG) piles gaining support below the potentially liquefiable soil were selected for the support of the proposed structure. Challenges for pile design included the anticipated earthquake-induced ground settlement, high downdrag loads, low soil lateral capacity during strong ground shaking, and the effect of pile installation on the performance of the existing adjacent buildings and the installed shoring system. The replacement hospital is supported on over 600 APG piles, with lengths varying between 120 and 140 feet. Axial pile capacities were verified with an extensive indicator pile installation program and dynamic pile load testing.INTRODUCTIONThe Hospital Replacement Wing (HRW) project is at the Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) in Ventura County, Southern California (Figure 1). The VCMC consists of three interconnected hospital buildings (Buildings 303, 304, and Fainer Building), the Medical Laboratory/Cafeteria Building, two mental health buildings, a medical office building, an emergency generator building, and surface parking lots. The HRW is near the center of the campus, adjacent to several existing buildings.The HRW is a 2- to 3-story structure, with a 15- to 20-foot-deep basement beneath the entire 95,000-square-foot building footprint. The HRW project includes a Loading Dock, a four-level corridor to the Fainer Building (Fainer connector), and a two-level corridor to the Medical Laboratory/Cafeteria Building (Café connector). The corridors are structurally separated from the existing buildings. Typical dead plus live load column loads for the HRW range from about 635 kips to 935 kips and total loads range from about 860 kips to 1,295 kips."

"Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. "The failure that was utilized for developing this model was a double bench-scale failure, approximately 20 m in height, in the Misery pit at BHP Billiton’s EKATI mine site. The bench that failed was excavated in biotite schist. Due to previous problems with bench-scale toppling failures, this bench was excavated with a 70° inclined, 30 m deep preshear. Upon exposure, the wall was very clean with half-barrels commonly observed from the pre-shear operation.In August 2003, a bench failure of about 1000 t occurred in this pre-sheared biotite schist (Fig. 1). Upon examination it was noted that the foliation that paralleled and dipped at 70° into the face when excavated was approximately horizontal at the top of the failure (Fig. 2). While the failure mode itself appears complex, the failure was apparently driven by three factors:• a low-angle, low-frictional strength fault or discontinuity at the base of the failure area;• water either contributed meteorically from precipitation and/or from permafrost melt; and• foliation planes providing a viable toppling geometry once toe block motion began to occur.The above details are illustrated in Figure 3.After considerable thought and analysis, a model was postulated for the failure.It is thought that the entire failure had been triggered by displacement of a toe block (Fig. 4). This toe block is bounded on the back by foliation, the bottom by a low-angle, lowstrength fault, and the front by the bench face. Water pressures behind the bench face developed forces on the block as can be seen in Figure 5. These forces were sufficient to induce block motion. As can be seen in the relative shear strength diagram in Figure 6, only a small amount of water is necessary in the face to initiate block displacement. Note that in this figure, a simplistic piezometric pressure distribution was assumed."

"Quinsam coal mine is located about 25 km west of Campbell River on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Using continuous miners in a fully mechanized retreat room-and-pillar operation, it produces low sulphur, “super compliance” thermal coal for domestic and international markets at a rate of about 2600 t/d. Currently, 65 people work at the site, including some corporate employees.Opened in 1993, the Quinsam mine had a dismal safety record until 1997. Lost time injuries and medical aids were unacceptably high. In 1998, a change in corporate structure brought a change in safety attitudes; a total and unequivocal commitment to safety as job No.1 by corporate and site management. This commitment was clearly spelled out in a new mission statement, circulated to all employees by the new President and CEO, David Slater: “Safety is job No. 1; Production flows from safety; and Think safety at all times.” As well as re-defining workplace safety practices, QCC tightened engineering controls and enforced strict adherence to mine plans.This paper provides a general background to the mining operation, and describes the safety practices that have resulted in an enviable safety record in recent years, reflected by provincial and national recognition."
