The use of Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT), a highly selective separation technology using specifically designed ligands (such as macrocycles), has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment process for removal of several ions that are commonly found in many hydrometallurgical circuits as well as in environ-mental treatment operations. Ions removed by MRT include base, heavy and transition metals, precious metals, halides, and alkali/alkaline earths. A MRT pilot plant run was conducted at Zincor to demonstrate the cobalt/nickel purification of zinc electrolyte, and to recover saleable pure cobalt/nickel sulphate solution. The MRT process holds various advantages, which include the elimination of a catalyst such as arsenic trioxide, conventionally used in cobalt and nickel cementation. SuperLig® 138 can be used to remove cobalt and nickel from120?170 g/l Zn-solutions at pH 1?2. The Zincor MRT application demonstrated its capability of concentrating large volumes o copper barren impure solution at low cobalt and nickel concentration levels in the feed, to small solution volumes at high cobalt and nickel concentrations. Around 99.5% of the cobalt was removed from solution with cobalt impurity levels in feed varying between 10 mg/l and 26 mg/l.

This report is the second of a series of three that will evaluate, in order, the metallothermic, carbothermic, and electrolytic methods of magnesium production. The historical development of the carbothermic process is outlined. Production costs varying from 38.9 to 21.8 cents per pound of magnesium are estimated for different versions of the process. Additional suggested process modifications are listed. The technical and economic potential of the different versions are compared. Areas deemed most promising for future research on the process are delineated.

Ground Modification construction is rapidly evolving in the United States. An assessment of the construction status of Ground Modification methods with their dates of introduction and general acceptance in the United States is summarized. Seven of these techniques are discussed in depth with short case histories; namely, Dynamic Deep Compaction, vibro-compaction, vibro-Replacement, chemical grouting, compaction grouting, slurry grouting and jet grouting. Additional case histories are presented to illustrate the trend of combining Ground Modification techniques to solve specific site problems.

A wide variety of techniques and equipment are available for coring soft or poorly consolidated geological material. This report presents a comprehensive literature review and evaluation of these techniques and equipment. A potential user will find guidelines in this report to assist him in selecting sampling equipment. A bar chart shows what samplers have been used under what geological conditions, and gives the specific literature references. Two matrices rate the present techniques and equipment with respect to reported success for sampling specific materials, and with respect to several performance characteristics including complexity of use and core quality. These matrices are supplemented with tables of typical sampling equipment. and program costs. Near-term future developments are seen primarily in improved training of drillers, and in instrumenting the drilling operation to provide objective data on drilling characteristics. An extensive annotated bibliography, a catalogue of equipment suppliers including specifications and cost ranges, and a list of manufacturers and distributors are appended to the report.

As ligas de titânio ao Nióbio apresentam grande potencial de desenvolvimento graças a excelentes combinações de propriedades. O tratamento termomecânico a elas conferido é importante para atingir as propriedades desejadas. O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito da conformação mecânica nas propriedades da liga Ti42Nb forjada a frio com 80% de encruamento e seguido de envelhecimento. Foram realizados ensaios de tração, medidas de dureza, metalografia e microscopia das superfícies de fratura. Foi possível observar que a liga Ti42Nb apresentou maior dureza e consequentemente maior resistência após o envelhecimento.

The Pogo Mine, near Delta Junction, Alaska is a 2500 TPD gold operation employing processes including grinding, gravity, rougher flotation, leach, CIP, and E/W. An OCS(Optimizing Control System) expert control system has been implemented on rougher flotation in early 2008. The OCS system communicates with the Plant DCS(Distributed Control System) through OPC(OLE for Process Control) communication. The initial strategy was to control the flotation cell froth level set points to achieve target froth velocities. This strategy was enhanced by controlling both level and air flow setpoints. The flotation cell air and level are adjusted to reach cell pulling rates (froth velocities). The pulling rate setpoints for each cell are determined based on downstream capacity (concentrate surge tank level). The effect of pH and upstream disturbances is also taken into account in adjusting the air and level setpoints. Feed forward compensation is employed down the flotation row to minimize disturbances.

Mobile equipment in oil sand mining operations experience more maintenance problems than similar equipment in other surface mines, due to soft underfoot conditions. Oil sand properties are known to vary with temperature, bitumen content and previous loading cycles. One of the challenges is the widely variable underfoot pressure which supports shovels and trucks. In the case of a heavy hauler driving on in-pit roads, each tire is supported by a different ground stiffness resulting in an apparent uneven surface. Driving over uneven ground causes twist in the truck frame, which is transmitted to the dump body. Through a finite element analysis of a haul truck dump body, it was shown that slight frame twists produce localized stresses in the intersections of the floor stiffeners. These stresses are at times greater than those resulting from the maximum ore weight and are primarily responsible for cracking in these intersections. Syncrude maintains high quality haul roads, which are constructed of gravel, and makes every effort to keep the shovel pit roads as smooth as possible. This problem cannot be avoided through operational practices only and must also be accounted for in the design of haul truck bodies.

The process metallurgy of many nickel laterite smelting operations is controlled largely by the physical chemistry of the slag system. Consequently, accurate phase diagram information and physicochemical property data are essential to interpret and predict the behaviour and optimisation of the overall process. The system (SiO2 - MgO - FeO) first described by Bowen et al. between 1914 and 1935 and the system (SiO2 - MgO - FeO - Fe2O3) determined by Muan and Osborne in 1956 are of particular relevance to the study of nickel laterite smelting slags as these systems form a reasonable approximation of many industrial slags. This paper will review the literature for these (and other relevant) phase systems. In addition data available from the ternary and (quasi)ternary phase diagrams will be compared with data obtained from industrial slags. The physico-chemical properties under consideration will include; melting and crystallisation behaviour (solidus and liquidus temperatures), viscosity - temperature relationships, heat flux considerations, electrical conductivity, surface and interfacial tension.

This paper outlines a framework for ensuring the success of the implementation phase that follows research and development of new mining technologies and systems. It is based upon recent and past lessons learned that have demonstrated the critical challenges to effective technology transfer, which frequently receive inadequate attention within the culture of the mining business. The paper focuses on mining automation implementation challenges and then outlines a Roadmap which is proposed as an integrated framework to deal with the key aspects of people, process and technology. This framework is built upon: assembly of a Strategic Team to develop a Roadmap; fully understanding the business requirements of the technology initiative; defining Key Performance Indicators in a Balanced Score Card; performing a Stakeholder Analysis to identify the affected groups; and finally developing a master Project Plan to execute the Roadmap.

The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr2O3. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 16 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, stope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider stopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

"This paper studies the progress made by hydraulic shovel manufacturers over the last few years, particularly in the areas of productivity increase and operating cost reductions.Five years ago, it was widely considered that the unit production cost for a hydraulic shovel in a mining application was double that of a cable shovel in the same application. The hydraulic machine manufacturers have taken up this challenge, and modern improvements in design, coupled with changes in maintenance techniques, have narrowed the gap to the point where it is valid to ask the question ""will the cable shovel exist in ten years' time?"".Historical BackgroundThe history of the cable shovel goes back to the early 19th century and the industrial revolution. Early machines were steam-powered and ran on rails.The ""power shovel"" and the ""dragline"" were the only mechanical means of mass excavation until the early 1950s. Rail-mounted units gave way to crawlers, which increased flexibility considerably. Some shovels were redesigned as backhoes, and some became extremely large when designed as stripping shovels primarily used in North American coal mines.In the early 1950s growth in hydraulic technology spawned the introduction of the hydraulic excavator, which soon began to replace the smaller cable shovels and backhoes used in the construction industry. They were completely self-contained with either a gasoline or diesel engine and, being much lighter, were more readily transportable.As the excavators grew in size from its early models of 0.5 m3 or less, many of the cable shovel models were discontinued. This was not surprising for several reasons, but the most obvious is that both were often made by the same manufacturer."

Current practice for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) from flotation concentrates is by energy-intensive smelting processes followed by separation and refining of the base and precious metals. Energy costs are rapidly increasing in South Africa and this trend is forecast to continue in future years. Moreover, the smelting operations are highly susceptible to deleterious constituents, particularly chromite; and the increasing tonnages of UG2 chromititic ore being mined results in an increasing chromite content of smelter feeds. Hence there is a substantial incentive to assess and implement alternative processes to smelting for the treatment of PGM concentrates. The Kell process is a patented hydrometallurgical alternative to smelting that is totally insensitive to the chromite content of the feed concentrate and comprises three commercially proven unit operations (pressure oxidation leaching of base metals and sulfur, roasting and chlorination of precious metals). The Kell process provides the opportunity for existing and new PGM producers to significantly reduce their energy consumption, and in particular their consumption of electricity, by removing the need to smelt PGM concentrates. Energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions and installed power requirements are also much reduced. Compared with smelting and refining these reductions are calculated as: ? Total energy consumption-50% reduction ? Electrical energy consumption-84% reduction ? Energy consumption costs-76% reduction ? C02 emissions-70% reduction ? Installed power requirement 92% reduction. The data obtained from simple laboratory batch amenability testing can be readily applied to the Simulus mass and energy balance simulation procedure to determine energy and reagent consumptions, equipment selection and process optimization. The applicability of Kell to treating low-grade 'dirty' concentrates with high UG2 content as well as to polymetallic concentrates containing base metals as the major payable metals with subordinate PGM means that these savings can also be expected when the process is used for treating a range of concentrate types and grades. A special short-term research project was initiated to develop plant design parameters for treating mine waters to yield an effluent acceptable for discharge into streams and a sludge amenable to effective and economic disposal. Neutralization was investigated to provide simple and direct treatment of ferruginous acid waters using lime; coarse limestone, and limestone followed by lime. Limestone treatment was accomplished using a small cement mixer as a simple reactor to provide abrasive agitation of limestone and mine water. Results from tests with nine mine waters encompassing a wide range of iron and acid concentrations showed that coarse limestone, one of the cheapest neutralizing agents known, is potentially useful for treating mine water discharges. However, process variables must be defined more completely before the practical applications and limitations of the process can be fully established. In all the tests a pH of >7.2 was obtained ultimately with limestone. Reaction time to reduce the iron content below 7 ppm in the water was dependent on the original ferrous iron concentration. For waters with high ferrous iron content, treatment with limestone followed by lime rapidly produced an acceptable treated water, Sludges with good settling and handling characteristics resulted when limestone was used for neutralization either alone or with subsequent treatment. Reaction rates are expressed graphically as pH change and iron depletion curves; characteristic solids settling curves are shown. The temperature dependency of ferrous iron oxidation was verified.

En ese sentido, los resultados logrados con cada una de las alternativas de minado por subniveles, indica que se ha logrado optimizar las diferentes variables mineras y cumplir con el plan estratégico de Empresa Minera Iscaycruz S.A. (EMISA). Para cumplir con el citado plan estratégico, se debe optimizar el método de minado de Chupa, a través de una mayor producción a un menor costo,así como del aprovecho de las labores de desarrollo y preparación ejecutadas según el planeamiento inicial del minado. Por ello, la secuencia del avance del minado y la reestructuración del sistema de relleno de la mina son los aspectos importantes para lograr este objetivo. "

President Bush’s National Energy Program and his Clear Skies Initiative both emphasize the use of coal to help meet the nation’s growing energy needs. And why not? Coal is currently responsible for more than 50 percent of the nation’s electricity generation. That fact, though, seems to be lost on policy makers, the environmental community and the public. Critics of coal advocate the increased use of renewable energy sources and the increased use of natural gas. Renewables, though, are only capable of generating a tiny fraction of the power required. Natural gas is expensive. And natural gas production cannot keep up with demand, especially given the nation’s increasing energy needs.

During the last 125 years, the steel industry has witnessed revolutionary changes in the process of steelmaking. The Bessemer process was the predominant steel production technology during the last two decades of the 19th century. The open hearth process accounted for the lion's share of world steel production for six decades from 1910 to 1970. With the appearance of the LD process on the industrial stage in 1952, the importance of open hearth process declined and currently the basic oxygen processes are contributing more than 60 per cent of the world steel production. The LD process also led to the development of several other oxygen blown processes such as LDAC, OLP, OBM, QBOP, EOF, Clc.

Many factors influence the results of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate well productivity. Most of these factors have been studied and their effects discussed in the literature. However, the movement of sand through the crack during fracturing has received little consideration. Exactly where the sand goes in the fracture, how it gets there, and how this might influence results have not been studied, judging from published reports. To get an answer to some of these questions we have studied sand movement through a simulated crack segment in the laboratory. Although the work is preliminary, we have answered some questions about sand movement in a semiquantitative sense. We are reporting our results at this time in the hope of stimulating interest and further study in this important aspect of fracturing. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of equipment used in this study. A segment of a vertical crack 0.25-in. wide was formed between two Plexiglas plates, and movement of sand in fluid through the crack was observed under various conditions. Sand and fluid were injected into the crack at constant rates. The top and bottom of the crack were closed so that the fluid flowed horizontally. Because of gravity most of the sand settled to the bottom before moving very far through the crack. If the fluid velocity exceeded a certain critical value, then all the sand injected was washed on through the crack even though it had settled to the bottom. When the fluid velocity was less than this value when sand injection was started, most of the sand which settled in the crack remained in place until enough of the area open to fluid flow was blocked by the settled sand to increase the fluid velocity to the critical value.. At this point all injected sand moved on through the crack even though it settled to the lower portion of the moving fluid section. All sand previously settled remained in place. When fluid velocity was increased at this paint by increasing fluid injection rate (without also increasing sand injection rate), some of the previously settled sand was washed out until enough area was open to flow that the velocity dropped to the critical value. Conversely, when the fluid velocity was decreased by decreasing the fluid injection rate (without changing the rate of sand injection), additional sand would settle until the critical velocity was again attained. In short, the critical velocity is an equilibrium value which the system will automatically seek, if possible. The equilibrium (or critical) velocity was measured under several conditions. The results of these measurements are shown in Pig. 2 where the equilibrium velocity is shown as a function of the amount of sand injected per minute. The points falling in the shaded band shown in Fig. 2 were obtained with water. The higher viscosities were obtained by adding CMC (carboxymethylcellu-lose). Data indicate that the equilibrium velocity is not very sensitive to sand size or transport fluid viscosity, or to sand injection rate (except at very low rates). Points connected by the solid CUrve in Fig. 2 were obtained with water and 20- to 40-mesh steel shot. The equilibrium velocity is apparently fairly sensitive to difference in density between particle and fluid. Only one run was made with a gelled fluid and that was gelled water at zero sand injection rate as shown in Fig. 2. This report is the third of a series on convergence of roof and floor in coal mines and subsidence of surface that accompanies it. The first paper5/ dealt with extraction in a mechanized mine (Montour 10) having relatively short rib lines that retreat rapidly. The second dealt with extraction in a mine (Crucible) in which coal was loaded. by hand and in which the rib lines wore long and slow-moving. The present report deals with a mine (Gibson) in which conditions approximated those in the Crucible mine, except that the distance between room centers was considerably less and the pillars were narrower in consequence. Moreover, the average cover was less and the studies were made under the steep hillside of a stream valley compared with a gently rolling surface over the portions of the second mine studied. Gibson mine lies in the east-central hart of Washington County, Pa. , approximately midway between the Montour 10 end Crucible mines on a north-south line. A cooperative agreement covering the work was made with the Hillman Coal & Coke Co. through W. L. Affelder, vice president. This paper describes the methods used in the investigation, gives excerpts from the data obtained, and offers such generalizations as appear to be justified.
