Business says that location is a primary component of being successful. So too is the importance of location in blasting. For blast seismograph data to be useful, the location of the blast and seismograph must be clearly documented. Another location of importance is that of a nearby structure. Establishing the spatial relationships between the blast, seismograph and nearby structures, allows the blaster to correctly interpret the data, evaluate the performance of the blast and gauge the validity of any complaints.

The Bureau of Mines conducted surface tests to determine the feasibility of using liquid explosives for underground rock fracturing. The effects of configuration, confinement, length, critical layer thickness, and fracture-propping sand on detonation and explosive propagation velocity of desensitized nitroglycerin were studied, using polymethyl methacrylate and glass-plate reservoirs through lengths from 3 to 12 ft, with explosive-layer thicknesses from 0.1875 to 0.0312 in and in aluminum tubes 8 ft long with diameters from 2.000 to 0.125 in. Interval and continuous detonation velocity data were obtained. Under the test conditions detonation velocity was dependent upon explosive confinement and fracture-propping sand. The detonation velocity of a confined nitroglycerin explosion in aluminum tubes can be reduced by as much as 85 percent, when the tube contains fracture-propping sand. The shape of the reservoir, whether triangular or rectangular, has little effect on the detonation velocity or explosive propagation. The critical or minimum explosive-layer thickness between glass plates, capable of supporting propagation, was 0.0312 in. The presence of a fracture-propping sand in the sheetlike layers increased the critical explosive layer thickness to 0.0625 in. In nitroglycerin-filled and nitroglycerin-sand filled tubes, the minimum tube diameters successfully tested were 0.125 in and 0.375 in, respectively.

This paper is dedicated to the memory of our friend Peter McKenzie who contributed much to the knowledge of the New South Wales Coalfields.ABSTRACTA fossil river system was recently mapped over parts of the Southern Coalfield, N.S.W. This river system occurs in the roof strata of the Bulli Seam. Sandstone of a fluvial nature was deposited in its course. The sandstone exhibits strong sedimentary vectorial properties and has a marked influence on strata-control in colliery workings.The sedimentary features analysed indicate an approximate S200W flow direction. Petrological studies reveal a clastic, well-cemented sedimentologically and structurally anistropic rock type. Washouts have been found and isopach maps of both sandstone and underlying roof-strata have been compiled. Relevant measurements were carried out in existing colliery workings and on bore cores.Optical determinations of feldspars revealed the presence of plagiocIase feldspars with few exceptions. Most of the feldspars are altered to clay minerals. It was found that a geographical trend exists in the distribution of feldspars, with more basic plagioclase in the northern part of the field.The source area of the fluvial sandstone lies to the north of the Southern Coalfield.Petrofabric analyses were done on several specimens of the fluvial sandstone. In the vicinity of major disturbances, penetrative fabrics were discovered.Calcites (e, 0112), micas (001), and quartz (crystalIo graphic c) show preferred orientations.

THE Jacksonville plant of Humphreys Gold Corp., operating under leases from National Lead Co. and Rutile Mining Co. of Florida, recovers rutile, ilmenite, zircon, and monazite from an ancient beach deposit containing about 2.5 pct of these minerals in combination. The location of the plant is unique, being situated about ten miles from the center of Jacksonville, Fla., surrounded by a thriving suburb. Two four-lane highways pass within 1 ½ miles of the plant. An expressway now under construction will pass over the tailing pile, within 500 ft of the mine office. The elevation at the plant site is approximately 50 ft above sea level. This is one of two mines producing titanium minerals and zircon in Florida. Another mine is also operated by Humphreys at Starke, about 50 miles southeast of Jacksonville. The Jacksonville deposit extends about six miles in a north-south direction, averaging approximately one half mile wide and twenty ft thick. ABSTRACT The sensitivity of sulphide minerals towards oxidation depends on the mineralogical makeup and nature of sulphide ores. This paper focuses on chalcopyrite behaviour in a nickel-copper sulphide- ore matrix that was aged in the mine-site stockpiles. Results of collectorless, collector-induced flotation and recovery by size are presented following a discussion of XPS analysis that was used to gain insight into oxidative alteration of chalcopyrite’s surface chemistry. Chalcopyrite maintains its high flotation activity despite exposure to weeks of oxidative conditions. It is concluded that chalcopyrite is quite tolerant to stockpile oxidation due to various factors related to alteration of its surface chemistry.

If the data measured and recorded during construction can be made available to engineers and managers within hours after construction then there are many economic and quality control benefits that can be realised. A state of the art CFA instrumentation and data management process has been developed in the UK. The key components of the instrumentation, GSM data service and the central database are described. Many benefits to the business have been realised and, where possible, these are quantified.

South Africa hosts some of the world?s largest known resources and reserves of minerals that are strategically important to the global economy. The country?s mining industry contributes significantly to the national economy in terms of gross domestic product, export earnings, corporate tax receipts, remuneration earnings, and employment. Platinum, gold, and coal are significant minerals because they make the largest individual contributions to these economic indicators. Several factors impact the cash cost performance of operations that mine these minerals, thus affecting the future sustainability of these operations, which are generally ?price-takers?. It is therefore important that the cash cost performance of operations for these key minerals is analysed. Commercially available industry cost curves can be used for such analysis. However, some companies may not be able to afford to purchase these curves. This paper presents a simple Microsoft Excel® algorithm for constructing the curves. It also demonstrates how the constructed industry curves were used to analyse the cash cost performance of South African mining operations for the three selected minerals for the period 2007 to 2011, which included the 2008 global financial crisis. The analysis revealed that the operations were affected by several global and local factors during the review period. River Des Peres Foul water Interceptor (Skinker–McCausland Tunnel) is a gravity sewer tunnel constructed to eliminate dry sewage overflows during high river stages and to improve the wastewater collection and treatment. The original 78-inch (2m)finished diameter Skinker-McCausland Tunnel started as a 21,500 feet (6.5km)interceptor with 13 work, drop and access shafts. The tunnel constructions included soft ground, mixed face and rock tunneling in karst formation with maximum overburden of 175 feet (53m). Due to the success of the project, the tunnel alignment was extended another13,361 feet (4.1 km) and 7 new structures by negotiating two additional segments with the contractor and the designers.

"Specialized numerical modeling codes have been developed over the years to estimate ground stresses during the excavation of coal in underground mines. One of these tools, MULSIM, a displacement discontinuity boundary element code, was last developed by Zipf into a version called MULSIM/NL [USBM 1992a, 1992b]. The code was used frequently in years past, but closure of the Bureau of Mines in 1996 marked the beginning of a pause in its development. A similar tool with distinctly different treatment of overburden idealization, LaModel, was subsequently developed [Heasley 1997] and largely displaced MULSIM/NL in the literature. However, recent work modeling deep western longwall coal mines [Larson and Whyatt 2013] has demonstrated that MULSIM has distinct advantages for regions with relatively stiff and strong overburden. This work required that MULSIM be revived and updated into a version called MulsimNL/Large. Updates include larger array sizes, greater precision, greater number of materials, and the addition of a five-point, six-segment pillar load/displacement model that provides the user a more flexible coal-strength model allowing hardening and softening before a final residual strength. MulsimNL/Large has the ability to calibrate to large load transfer distances observed in some western U.S. coal mines that appear to be caused by strong, massive units in the overburden and/or floor of a coal mine. Also, it provides the ability to calibrate gob stiffness to simulate measurements or estimates of overpanel weight distribution between gob and abutment, while still maintaining load transfer distance with minor adjustments. MulsimNL/Large can easily implement material strengths calculated from various pillar strength models. The five-point model gives MulsimNL/Large the ability to easily simulate pillar behavior that is extracted from detailed pillar models, such as FLAC3D. MulsimNL/Large or similar approaches should be considered for evaluating mining layouts where stratigraphic conditions are known to cause overpanel weight to transfer to an extent significantly longer than the empirical method widely used to calculate load transfer distances in the U.S. [Peng and Chiang 1984; Mark 1987; USBM 1990]."

Static tests give a measure of the balance between acid-producing and acid-neutralising mineral components in a material, while kinetic tests determine acid generation and neutralisation over a long period. Drill-core samples from the amphibolite and gneiss host rocks of the Stratoni lead-zinc sulphide deposit in Greece and mine/mill waste samples from Stratoni and Olympias were examined by the standard acid base accounting, BCR and net acid production tests. Mineralogical data on the materials and resulting residues were used to illustrate the differences between the methods and establish their ranges of applicability. BCR seems to simulate most closely the conditions prevailing during generation of acid mine drainage but is time-consuming and requires elaborate equipment. Although primarily cut-and-cover excavations are required for replacement of the existing elevated I-93 interstate highway through the heart of Boston for the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) project, some mined tunnel construction was also undertaken. The mined tunneling conducted was the 22-m-wide northbound roadway structure which passed below a 20-m-deep operating underground subway station that was built in 1913. The innovative underpinning scheme used to support the subway station during construction resulted in the successful mining beneath the subway station with negligible vertical settlement. Two grouting galleries were carefully mined below the subway structure, and pre-grouting of the granulary, pervious glacial soils and weathered bedrock was carried out from these galleries. The reinforced concrete walls of the underpinning structure were constructed within three stacked drifts that were sequentially mined below each grouting gallery. After 11 cross adits were mined between the grouting galleries, cast-in-place post-tensioned girders that spanned between the stacked-drift walls were constructed to support the subway station. The stacked-drift walls also provided lateral support for the 22-m wide by 29-m long by13-m high opening beneath the girders.

Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Electrowinning is an attractive method to recover gold from the relatively concentrated aurodicyanide solutions produced by the elution of loaded carbon, provided that the plated gold can be easily removed using high pressure water sprays. In practice, difficulty with the removal of the gold is occasionally experienced and has been correlated with the presence of high concentrations of copper in the eluate. In this work, the influence of copper on the electro-plating of gold was further investigated using a laboratory electrowinning cell with a rotating disc cathode, polarization, and adhesion tests. It was found that the reduction of copper will compete with gold electrowinning at high copper tenors and that the adhesion of the precipitated gold is also increased under these conditions. The country’s remarkable economic turnaround during the 1990s remains a model for other developing nations to follow. And the Peruvian government has not forgotten the industry that was instrumental in that turnaround. True, the country has not been spared the effects of the mining industry’s retrenchment that has occurred in other parts of the world. However, foreign mining companies remain committed to doing business in Peru. And the government remains committed to attracting foreign investment and maintaining a strong mining industry. This commitment was evident in September 1999during the 24th Convention of the Institutos de Ingenieros de Minas del Peru in Arequipa, Peru. More than 3,000 mining industry professionals from around the world attended the convention. And Extemin, the accompanying exhibit, featured more than 450 companies, many from the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa and other countries.

"Abstract The use of continuous flight auger (CFA) piles in Slovakia has increased significantly in recent decades. High-rise building of administrative centre Lakeside Park in Bratislava is based on piled-raft foundation. The technology of CFA has been used due to the advantages of this technology in comparison with driven and bored piles in local geotechnical conditions. Piles have been designed in accordance with Eurocode 7. Resistance of piles was calculated by using an analytical calculation model for bored piles according to Slovak technical standard and CFA technology has been taken into account by coefficient equal to 1.1. Settlement of piles was calculated by using a calculation model which is being used in Czech Republic and Slovakia. Two well instrumented static load tests were carried out to verify the pile design. The results of static load tests showed that the design was conservative. The paper presents analysis of numerical modelling of CFA pile and static load tests. Load-settlement curves and load distribution curves over pile shafts are compared. Software Plaxis 2011 has been used for numerical modelling. Hardening soil model allows considering over consolidation of Tertiary Silts and water pressure in deep sandy lenses. The article also presents the parametric study where the influences of pile-soil interface reduction factor, over consolidation ratio and material models of soils are analysed. The results of numerical modelling showed that the most appropriate results have been obtained when the interface reduction factor equal 0.9 and real behaviour of groundwater were considered. The conclusion of the paper confirms that mechanical behaviour of the ground can be better understood and determined by using FEM than analytical methods.1. IntroductionPiles are among the most frequently used elements of deep foundations. Piles transfer loads down to a suitable bearing stratum when the soil immediately below a construction is unsuitable. Piles are also used to reduce settlement of structure. At present, the requirements of limit settlement of structures are more stringent. Examples of these structures are commercial and administrative centres that form a complex of different tall buildings. High-rise buildings cause greater contact stresses than connected low-rise buildings. Pile foundations in such cases should be placed under the high-rise buildings to achieve an appropriate settlement.Resistance of piles can be determined from static load test results, in-situ tests and empirical experiences or calculations. Static load tests give the most reliable results, but these tests are also the most expensive. This is the reason for constant development of computational methods. Especially numerical methods give more accurate results by using more sophisticated material models e. g. hardening soil or hypoplastic model."

A recent design-build project in New York involved various degrees of additions and improvements to four existing transit stations. Reuse of the existing foundations was considered a more sustainable alternative than constructing new foundations for the project. This approach mitigated the extent of demolition work and limited the amount of downtime for track operations. A key challenge for reusing the existing foundations was the lack of as-built drawings. In order to obtain some measure of confidence for the proposed foundation reuse, non-destructive investigation technology was adopted to evaluate the structural integrity of the piers and foundations. A total of 47 piers for the existing passenger platform were investigated for possible reuse. Several test pits, excavated to verify the foundation type and configuration, indicated the piers were founded on a combination of shallow footings and drilled shafts. Pile integrity tests were performed to verify the length of the drilled shafts. Geotechnical capacity of drilled shafts was evaluated for side friction and end bearing resistance, and confirmed using a proof load test conducted from the existing platform structure. This paper presents the investigation methodology and discusses the approach adopted for geotechnical design of the existing foundations for reuse.

Rock deformational structures in a deep mine were analyzed by petrofabric techniques to learn (1) the relative magnitude and direction of the principal stresses involved in tectonic deformations prior to mining, (2) the preferred orientation of rock planar discontinuities which define rock anistropy prior to mining, and (3) the relationship of mining-induced rock failure to inherent rock stresses and inherent rock anisotropy. Rock fabric elements used for petrofabric analysis consisted of bedding planes, faults, joints, fractures, foliation, sericite plane (001), quartz axis [0001], quartz deformation lamellae, and microfractures. Structures and structural symmetries from different areas within the mine and from different scales of observation were compared to learn the nature of rock anisotropy and the orientation of the principal stresses defined by rock deformations. Analysis of such fabric as regional and macroscopic faults, b-c joints, quartz [0001], sericite (001), and microfractures, indicate that during the epochs of tectonic deformation, the maximum and minimum principal stresses were horizontally oriented and acted along northwest and northeast axes, respectively. This condition of regional stress appears to have continued during folding and the associated period of faulting. The most recent tectonic deformation represents a rotation of the minimum principal stresses into a vertical position, as shown by the development of a tensile joint system, quartz deformation lamellae, and microfractures. Good interscale correlation and statistical homogeneity of tectonic fabric indicate a stress field homogeneity in this area during tectonic deformation. Rock physical anisotropy is genetically associated with tectonic fabric and consists of preferentially oriented planar discontinuities intersecting along a nearly vertical axis. The mining-induced deformations were correlated with the inherent rock anisotropy which either directly controls or greatly affects their development. This phase of rock deformation shows a greater degree of stress field heterogeneity than was the case with tectonic deformations This is explained as a result of nonconfinement afforded by underground openings and the increase in ground stresses due to mining activity"

One area of study in the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate and enhance the ability of mine safety management personnel to apply analytical techniques to injury experience data and to justify requests for funds for safety enhancement actions on a cost/benefit and other quantitative basis. Four volumes of this final project report detail (1) the objective and scope of the mine safety management research, (2) the results of literature review, and case studies, and (3) models developed for mine safety management. The four volumes are titled as Volume III: Mine Safety Management, Volume IV: Analytical Techniques for Mine Safety Management; Volume V: Mine Safety Management Case Studies and Volume IX: Training Cost Model. In this volume, the following material is presented: (i) review of related literature, (ii) mathematical models to perform quantitative analyses of accident/ injury experience data using the tools and techniques of risk analysis, time series analysis, and the Markov process, and (iii) descriptions of the HDBSEL and ACIM programs which are used to perform accident/injury experience analyses and cost analyses, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines is in the process of degasifying a virgin area in northern West Virginia from the base of an 839-foot-deep vertical borehole¬. An in situ gas pressure hole 199 feet long, and seven degasification holes ranging in depth from 500 to 850 feet (average 618 feet) were drilled in an 8-foot-thick virgin Pittsburgh coalbed from the enlarged (14-foot-diameter) bottom of this borehole. The in situ pressure at the back end of the hole and the range of gas and water flows from degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psi, 79,000 to 257,000 cfd (average 160,000 cfd), and 5 to 8 gpm per hole (average 6.8 gpm), respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual water traps to a common collector for natural venting of the gas through pipes to the atmos¬phere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respec¬tively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psi. Eighty days later the correspond¬ing values dropped to 529,000 cfd, 0.50 gpm, and 13 psi. After 180 days of degasification, 91 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the affected virgin area. This represents 60 to 70 percent of the gas calculated to be contained in the area of coal affected by the holes.

Difficulties were experienced in the identification of carbonate minerals intimately associated with iron oxides in the so called carbonate ore, which occurs at depth in the Iron Duke Orebody.Determination of refractive indices by examination under the microscope using the immersion method, together with inferred chemical composition indicates that dolomite and parankerite are common constituents. Histograms of the manganese and sulphur contents strongly suggest that manganese is associated with the carbonate minerals, and that the highest sulphur assays occur near the base of the carbonate body.From the present work it is concluded that refractive indices indicate only a very approximate composition for carbonates of the parankerite type.The different carbonate minerals occur in irregular zones.INTRODUCTIONThe Iron Duke deposit is situated in the southern portion of the South Middleback Range on Eyre Peninsula, S.A., 30 miles from Whyalla. (Fig. 1).Drilling at Iron Duke revealed a large body of so called carbonate ore, which was tested in detail at cross section 1000 ft. S by three diamond drill holes, DDH.57, 67 and 78. (Fig. 2)Most specimens of carbonate ore described below were obtained from DDH 67 and 78.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe South Middleback Range is composed of two parallel ridges trending north-south. The Iron Duke orebody is situated on the southern portion of the western ridge. (Fig.1) .The rocks of these ranges belong to the Middleback Group which rests on a gneiss complex. Their age is considered to be Middle Precambrian or late Archaean.
