As time is costly, engineering companies have developed methods, procedures and mechanical equipment to tunnel faster. But the best excavation method will not be able to cope with the time pressure if there is not a reliable backup system. Therefore, the application of belt conveyors for tunnel boring machine (TBM) drives as well as for drill-and-blast driven tunnels assure a quick and smooth removal of excavated soil in order to enhance the efficiency of the tunneling equipment. During the last 10 years, belt conveyor systems have achieved ?state-of-the-art? levels and have become the first choice for muck removal systems in both TBM and drill-and-blast driven tunnels. Because time has become such a key criterion in tunneling projects, it is essential that all equipment is operated so as to derive optimum efficiency and minimize costs. Efficiency also means to think about new tasks for existing technologies.

The displacement compaction piles described in the paper are installed using a heavy casing or tube and an internal drop hammer. The casing which initially is closed at the bottom by a sand plug displaces the surrounding soil during the driving. Additional sand is rammed down through the casing during the extraction of the casing. The applications and limitations of the method are reviewed in the paper. The importance of checking the sand compaction piles during and after the installation is stressed. Indications of the compaction of the surrounding soil during the driving can be obtained by comparing the initial and the redriving logs of the casing as well as from the volume of sand added. A method to estimate the increase of the mean cone resistance as measured by CPT tests in sandy and silty soils is presented. The governing parameters are the volume of the added sand, the granulometric index and the initial cone resistance.

"The Northgate Link Extension project is the third phase of the Sound Transit master plan to extend light rail throughout the greater Seattle metropolitan area. When completed, the Northgate Link Extension will extend the existing light rail system north by about 7 km (4.3 miles) from the University of Washington to the Northgate neighborhood. A general overview of the project alignment is provided as Fig. 1. The project was funded by a combination of federal grants and allocations from local taxes. The general contractor on the project was JCM Northlink LLC (JCM), a joint venture between Jay Dee Contractors, Frank Coluccio Construction Company and Michels Corp. SoilFreeze, Inc. was retained as a subcontractor to provide ground freezing design and construction services.The project involved the construction of two parallel 5.5-m, 25-cm (18-ft, 10-in.) (inside) diameter tunnels using earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) and precast segmental concrete tunnel liners. The two tunnels maintained roughly the same elevation along the alignment and were spaced roughly 12 m (40 ft) apart (centerline to centerline). A total of 23 cross-passages connecting the two tunnels were included at approximate 244-m (800-ft) intervals. Cross passage excavations were elliptical in shape with dimensions of approximately 5.6 m (18.5 ft) in height and 5.3 m (17 ft) in width. The cross-passages were 5.8 to 6.1 m (19 to 20 ft) long as measured between the exterior of the tunnels at springline elevation. Cross passages were intentionally located directly beneath public right-of-ways thus avoiding buildings. Many of the cross passages were located beneath narrow roads in residential neighborhoods with mature vegetation, existing utility structures and piping and limited parking areas. Excavation and support for each cross passage was completed using the sequential excavation method (SEM).The subsurface soil and ground water conditions at the cross-passage locations were described in the Northgate Link Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) prepared by Jacobs Associates and the Northgate Link Geotechnical Data Report (GDR) prepared by Shannon and Wilson, Inc. Soils along the project alignment were glacially overridden and characterized as very dense or hard. Subsurface soils consisted of cohesionless sand and gravel (CSG), cohesionless silt and fine sand (CSF), cohesive clay and silt (CCS) and till and till-like deposits (TLD)."

Mining activity began in colonial times with ironmaking operations scattered along the eastern seaboard. Iron furnaces and forges manufactured iron implements from bog iron ores using charcoal from the extensive forests as a fuel. Lead ores were mined in the Mississippi Valley and copper ores in the Lake Superior region. However, the real beginning of the American mining industry did not occur until the 19th century. The history of American mining is organized around three epochal events. The first was the discovery of gold in California in 1848, which marked the beginning of a period of apprenticeship in mining and metallurgical techniques. The second was the discovery of the fabulous Comstock Lode in western Nevada in 1859, which expanded mining throughout the Far West and led to large-scale underground mining and the development of smelting techniques for lead, silver, and copper ores. The third event was the building of a transcontinental rail-road system after the Civil War, which brought about the consolidation of the industry from a large number of independent mines, mills, and smelters into integrated operations run by large corporations. Thus developed the mining industry that today supplies the energy and critical materials for the great-est industrial complex the world has known.

A portable optical instrument for performing multispot laser vibrometry is described. The instrument is capable of measuring arrival times, surface motion frequency, and surface velocity and displaying these quantities in various useful ways. Sigma Research is currently pursuing the development of such optical measuring systems for the evaluation of structures in rock by non-contact interferometry methods. This work was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior (U.S. Bureau of Mines) under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract number J0145075. The goal of the work was to develop a portable tripod mounted measuring system which can be set up at arbitrary distances (up to 30 meters) from a surface and project four in-line laser sample beams on this surface. A light receiving telescope gathers the scattered light from these four spots and provisions are made to mix this light with a reference beam from the laser. Four photodiodes are employed to determine the resultant interference signals which characterize the motion (particle velocity, frequency, amplitude) of the four illuminated spots on the surface under sudy. Information of this type can then be used to characterize the elastic or mechanical properties of the surface in question. In some cases (if more than four spots are involved) this surface information could be back propagated to draw inferences about the internal state of the material volume bounded by this surface.

Rock property tests were performed on NX-size diamond drill core from the roof, floor, and coal from the longwall mining section of Federal No. 2 mine, West Virginia. The purpose of these tests was to determine the engineering properties of the various strata as part of a ground control study of the longwall operation. The following tests were performed: 1. In this study, spent grain was used as an adsorbent for the removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solutions, the process parameters such as contact time, solution pH, adsorbent dose, and initial Hg(II) concentration were studied in batch experiments. The initial adsorption process was fast, 91.08% of adsorption occurred within 5 min and equilibrium was reached at around 30min. Adsorption process was found to follow pseudo-second-order kinetics. The equilibrium data were better fitted to Langmuir isotherm than Freundlich isotherm with the maximum adsorption capacity 41.36 mg/g. The structure and component of spent grain before and after adsorption of Hg(II) were investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX), these analysis also confirmed the adsorption of Hg(II) onto spent grain. The results indicated that spent grain had potential as a new inexpensive adsorbent for Hg(II) removal from aqueous solutions.

Safety conditions in industry have greatly improved over time. However, around the world, in Canada, and in each province or territory, people are still the victims of serious industrial accidents. The increasing safety of people at work then continues to be an imperative in industry today.<p> So how do we achieve a workplace where no one gets hurt? Well, in simple terms, folks need to be protected from unplanned exposures to equipment or energy sources that can do harm. If you think about it, all of our efforts in loss management and safety should then be directed toward avoiding these uncontrolled events. And it works! Our safety performance over the years has enjoyed tremendous improvement due to this support for loss management and safety. We now explore best practices toward achieving that next step in safety improvement.<p> As shown following, a large combination of loss management activities act together to support safety performance. Many of these activities are interrelated and some people have described them as the ?inputs? into an approach or program for achieving safety. Using this description, it follows that the ?outputs? of the program are some of the advertised measures of safety we see around us today, such as injury frequency rates. <p> It is asserted that a leadership focus to regularly measure safety and loss management activites (so-called ?inputs?), as a basis for taking supportive actions to ensure their effectiveness, is the basis for safety results (so-called ?outputs?) that consistently achieve high standards of excellence.<p> The concept of managing input activities, as enabled by effective measurements, can significantly act to transform our focus and priorities in the workplace. Supporting input activities like strategies, plans, or procedures with our best efforts will get us to our intended goals. Tracking outputs alone will not.<p> Safety and production have traditionally been cast as competing objectives. When both objectives are mutually supported and considered, however, people will invent ways of doing work that support both safety and production, and any other business parameter. When done right, innovation through meaningful involvement of affected people in the workplace will support safety excellence in a manner that in turn improves business efficiency overall.<p> For a workplace to be safe, it then requires everyone?s help and participation to make it happen, a collaborative effort by management, leaders, and frontline folks with the power and responsibility to take appropriate action at every level in the organization. In this way, everyone becomes a leader in safety.<p> The achievement of commitment to loss management input activities by folks in the workplace is the basis for attaining safety excellence. Titanium sponge, which is almost pure titanium, is extremely ductile and not easily processed into titanium powder. One method of producing powder is the hydride-dehydride (HDH) process, where titanium sponge is hydrided to form brittle titanium hydride (TiH2). Titanium hydride is easily milled to produce powder and is then dehydrided to form Ti powder. In this work, titanium hydride powder obtained from titanium sponge was used as a starting material for blending and mechanical alloying with elemental powders. Firstly, titanium hydride powder was blended with aluminium elemental powder to produce a homogenized powder, which was then compacted and sintered to produce powder metallurgy compacts. Secondly, titanium hydride powder was mechanically alloyed with aluminium elemental powder and then compacted. The mechanically alloyed powder was characterized in terms of particle size distribution, morphology and microstructure. In both blending and mechanical alloying, the green compacts were characterized by assessing the green density, while the sintered compacts were characterized by their sintered density, microstructure, and hardness. The two processes have resulted in the formation of TiA13 intermetallic compound. It was established that by simple mixing and homogenizing, titanium hydride can be used as a starting material to produce powder metallurgy components in which porosity is a benefit rather than a problem, much akin to metallic foams. From the products obtained in the TiHz-Al system, it appears that titanium hydride can be used as a precursor in mechanical alloying. However, the possible formation of complex hydrides may introduce detrimental properties, and needs to be further investigated. For the production of non-porous components, it would be advisable to dehydrogenate the TiH2 powder before milling i.e. producing titanium powder by the hydride-dehydride (HDH) method. The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency(MIGA) is part of the World Bank Group, and has as its mission the facilitation of foreign direct investment by providing political risk insurance (guarantees) to foreign investors and lenders. As a development institution, MIGA is required to ensure that the projects that it insures will bring development benefits to the host country. Demonstration of this includes review and analysis of the environmental and social soundness of a prospective investment. Environmental guidelines and policies developed by the World Bank Group are important components both in analyzing the environmental and social soundness of a prospective investment and in risk management. MIGA has recently formalized and adopted environmental assessment and disclosure policies. The approach taken by MIGA to environmental review of investments and implementation of these policies is described in this paper.

This paper reviews the recovery of potassium from different rocks and mineral sources. Global demand for potassium is rising steadily due to the growth of agricultural production. Fertilizer manufacture consumes the majority of the world’s potassium production, with other uses including those in the pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash (K2O) minerals, such as sylvite, kainite and carnalite, in countries like Canada, the United States, Israel and Russia makes them major potash producers, whereas agriculture-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India meet their potassium requirements through imports only. In these countries, the huge availability of potassium-bearing rocks/minerals like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica and glauconitic sandstone, containing around 4 to 17 percent K2O, brings up the prospect of commercial production of potassium. Potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast-leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. Although seawater is vastly available, the recovery of potassium from seawater using chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, membrane separation and ion-exchange methods is not cost-effective due to low concentration of potassium.

THIS REPORT covers the third in a series of five projects into which the Conowingo tunnel system has been divided for geographical and practical reasons. It outlines the work constituting Project No.3 that consists principally of the following: (a) To sink the No. 15 shaft and extend the Alden, Sugar Notch, Baltimore No.2, and Laflin shafts from their present depths to tunnel level; (b) to drive a tunnel off these shafts to connect with the western end of the tunnel in Project No.1 (Lackawanna) and to a point 1 mile south of the No. 15 shaft; (c) to construct an emergency pumping plant at the No. 15 shaft, complete with 3 centrifugal pumps of 200-cubic-foot-per-second (c. f. s.) capacity each, and a discharge-water shaft and a discharge tunnel for conducting the water from the pumping plant into the Susquehanna River; and (d) to construct a lateral tunnel 1 mile long off the main tunnel in the vicinity of the No. 15 shaft, to be known as the Wyoming lateral. The project, as outlined, is a self-contained drainage unit that will permit unwatering inundated mines and safeguarding active mines in the Wyoming Basin of the Northern field and also will handle the water in the Lackawanna Basin, thus permitting the temporary pumping plant provided in Project No.1 to be discontinued. The pumps installed in the temporary pumping plant provided in Project No.1 can then be moved to the emergency pumping plants recommended in Projects Nos. 2 and 3, to be installed as the third or standby unit.

Water-swellable layered silicates, namely, the smectite clays can remove suspended materials (called herein as debris) and metal ions from aqueous streams. The present study shows that the flocculating and metal extracting abilities of smectite clay-based flocculants can be enhanced when these clays are used in conjunction with a specific anionic polymer. Such performance enhancement is attributed to the following: i) the clay-dispersing ability of the polymeric additive, that would translate into an increase in the clay-surface area available for the attachment of the debris particles onto the clay particles; ii) the possibility of dispersant-to-coagulant transition of the polymer during the later instants of the treatment process, as a result of reduction in solvency of the wastewater for the polymer due to the release of cationic species from the clay-based flocculant solids; iii) metal-complexing ability and adsorption properties of the polymer.

The rate of reaction between iron oxides and carbonaceous materials, agglomerated as pellets, was studied experimentally by measuring the weight loss as a function of time. The effects of temperature, carbon type, inert gas flow rate, pellet size and additions (sodium. carbonate and Portland cement) were determined. It was shown that the value of the apparent activation energy can display large deviations under different experimental conditions; in the present work it was found to be 226.6 kJ/mol. The reaction with coke is slower than with charcoal, and the rate increases as the flow of inert gas in the reaction vessel decreases. Comparison of the rates for pellets of different sizes has shown that for small pellets the initial rate is faster but that it slows down at high conversions owing to the penetration of inert gas into the pellet. Additions of sodium carbonate and Portland cement increase the rate; sodium. carbonate promotes the catalysis of the Boudouard reaction, which is the slowest of the partial reactions. In this study, a process to separate manganese and iron from manganiferous iron ores by reductive acid leaching followed by magnetic separation was conceived and experimentally tested. In the leaching process, sulfuric acid was used as lixiviant and oxalic acid was used as reductant. The experimental results showed that the manganese and iron separation was optimum when the concentration of the sulfuric acid and oxalic acid were 0.75 M and 30 g/L, respectively, at a temperature of 80 °C, a solid/ liquid ratio of 67 g/L, stirring speed of 400 rpm, and leaching duration of 60 min. Under this condition, 90.49% and 6.78% of Mn and Fe were dissolved, respectively, from the ore sample with a size fraction of − 106 μm. It was determined that the leaching of manganese from the ores was a second-order reaction with an activation energy (Ea) of 53.38 kJ/mol. The leaching residues obtained under the optimum condition were subjected to high-intensity wet magnetic separation tests to recover the remaining iron content. This separation process produced a concentrate containing 56.20% Fe and 1.79% Mn with iron and manganese recoveries of 56.83% and 66.73%, respectively. A magnetic separation test from an unleached ore sample was also carried out as a benchmark. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a magnetic separation process was used to a residue obtained from reductive acid leaching of manganiferous iron ores to recover iron.
