The electrochemical reduction of AlC13 was investigated as a process for the production of aluminum. An externally heated, single-compartment cell with a rammed refractory lining was used with molten KCl-NaCl-AlC13 electrolyte. Aluminum was deposited qt 700° to 760° C with a current of 100 to 200 amperes on a molten aluminum cathode. Chlorine was evolved at a graphite anode and collected and measured to provide a quantitative evaluation of the AlC13 reduction. Aluminum was removed from the cell by siphoning or ladling. Granular AlC13 was added periodically to replenish that depleted from the electrolyte. Concentrations of 7.5 to 17.5 percent AlC13 in the electrolyte were optimum for operation. Anode current efficiencies of 83 to 85 percent were attained, using anode current densities of 5.9 amperes per square inch and an anode-cathode distance of 4 inches. The chemically bonded, alumina liner was resistant to attack by aluminum and chlorine but susceptible to erosion at the surface of the electrolyte. Titanium diboride proved suitable for the electrical connection to the molten aluminum cathode. Aluminum of a purity equal to or better than 1100 series metal was electrowon continuously from commercial AlC13 for a period of 4-1/2 months.

The thermal stability of fully silicided NiSi with arsenic doping on silicon was investigated. The aims of the work were to investigate the Ni silicide phase-related issues associated with arsenic dopant and thermal annealing on Ni-FUSI/HfO2/Si and Ni-FUSI/HfSiO/Si gate stacks. It was found that arsenic-incorporation demonstrated some improvement in both morphology and phase stability of nickel silicided films at high processing temperatures regardless underlying gate dielectrics. The correlations of Ni-Si phase transformation and arsenic doapnt with their electrical and physical changes were established by sheet resistance measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Furthermore, the modulation of the work function (WF) of Ni fully silicided gates by arsenic impurity is presented, comparing the effects of dopant (As) on the WF and silicide phases (NiSi and NiSi2). It confirmed that the work function of NiSi can be tuned by implanting arsenic dopant, but it ineffective for NiSi2 phase.

"Geo-sensing is the ability to routinely measure or infer rock properties at a range of scales using non-destructive scanning devices. These devices can provide information and data flows to support integrated decision making across the minerals value chain. Geo-sensing has been used for many years in minerals exploration using technologies such as satellite imaging and airborne geophysics but to date the use of sensing technologies in between the mine and mill has been very limited. The aim of this research is to develop new mineral sensing technologies that can enable grade engineered ore streams through the rejection of low value gangue or deleterious elements either in the pit or during transfer to the mill. This paper focusses on the research and development being carried out by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and its associated members on new sensing technologies. At the start of their development these technologies were classified on the Technology Readiness Level scale at 3 (TRL3), equivalent to a proof of concept. Laboratory testing and design is aimed at progressing these sensing technologies to TRL5 which is ready for testing at an end users site. New data obtained during the laboratory testing and design phases are presented in the paper demonstrating performance specifications such as detection limits and measurement speed which can be used to infer the pod size of gangue that can be rejected at scale. Grade Engineering® and coarse gangue rejection are considered as key drivers for the mining industry to address the higher mining, processing and environmental costs associated with ore bodies with declining grades. This is an industry wide problem and the development of mineral sensors is seen as key enabling technologies for Grade Engineering® and coarse gangue rejection. The technologies presented in this paper enhance value through early decision making of ore quality and improve the overall resource value case through improved grade and throughput engineering."

Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals frum points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments shaved that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 ¦m had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slav floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one thiro of the lead losses in the final tails. All sizes of zinc values between 150 mesh and 7 ¦m floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the -7 ¦m fraction. The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

The rockfall hazard is the major contributing agency to fatal accidents in South African platinum mining operations. The majority of these accidents occur in close proximity to the working stope face. The collapse of fractured or blocky ground between individual temporary support units or the closest permanent support line to the stope face has not yet been adequately addressed. A large-scale stope support system testing facility funded by the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC), has been designed and constructed to test support systems and stimulate innovative thinking by mining personnel, support manufacturers and suppliers by providing a facility where the interaction of stope support systems, a rigid stope face and a discontinuous hangingwall beam can be observed during quasi-static and dynamic conditions. Tests have been carried out on various types of stope support systems, focusing on the temporary support systems used in the immediate stope face area. The interlinking of the temporary support units with mesh or safety netting has been explored in the prevention of falls of ground between support units during gravity driven falls of ground. These tests illustrate the facility?s ability to be used to stimulate innovative thinking and provide a testing ground for the development of temporary support systems in order to reduce the risk off all of ground injury to mining personnel at the stope face.

"Long distance slurry pipeline systems have been successfully trans-porting steam coal, iron concentrates, copper concentrates and limestone for an aggregate of nearly 60 years and nearly three billion ton-miles annually. A phosphate concentrate pipeline is nearing start-up and systems for coking coal, lead/zinc concentrates and fly ash are planned. The solids pipeline concept, first patented in the early 1900's and commercialized in the 1950's, is now a proven technology providing an economic, environmentally pleasing and safe method for long distance bulk transport.The challenge for larger tonnage and longer distance movements of solids, for traversing increasingly rugged terrain in grass roots mineral developments, for transporting untried materials and for shipping more economic forms of proven materials still remains. This has necessitated continued refinements and optimization of the technology. The economic and environmental incentives for slurry pipelines when compared to other transport alternatives has justified substantial activity in this area. The scope of planned systems in coal, iron and other minerals is indicative of the firm place slurry pipelines will have in worldwide mineral development.In this presentation, the state-of-the-art in long distance slurry pipelines is reviewed with a focus on major systems of interest to the mineral processing industry. An overview of new developments in the application of this concept is presented, and finally, a projection of the future of pipelines in mineral development both worldwide and in Canada is discussed."

A review is made of the limited published experience of the effects of cemented fill in flotation.A general approach is adopted in listing and discussing possible sources of, and reasons for, ore contamination by cemented fill, together with basic, fundamental approaches to minimizing this contamination. These approaches involve basic mining design, effect of fill placement density, optimization of curing time and of cement content, variation of fill particle grading, use of flocculants and of pozzolans, fill placement and dewatering, and or blasting and handling practice.

This article updates the status of fatalities occurring in both coal and metal/nonmetal mines from January through December of 2001. Based on preliminary accident reports, as of December 31, 2001, seventy-two fatalities have occurred at coal and metal/ nonmetal mining operations. During this period, forty-two fatalities occurred at coal operations and thirty fatalities occurred at metal/nonmetal operations. Ignition or explosion of gas or dust and fall of roof were the most frequent accident classifications in coal and powered haulage fatalities were the most frequent accident classification in metal/nonmetal.

In 1989 The First Brigade for Geology and Mineral Exploration of Qinghai Province discovered gold at Jinlonggou and Qinlongtan, Tanjianshan. Between 1992 and 2002 small scale mining was carried out at these sites using underground mining methods at Jinlonggou and an open pit at Qinlongtan. During 2003 and 2004 geotechnical investigations were carried out in support of a bankable feasibility study. An important objective of this investigation was to meet both internationally accepted standards and codes of practice, and also to satisfy the Chinese requirements. Extensive use of local experience was utilised. Where possible geological drilling information was incorporated into the assessment. Extensive geotechnical mapping of surface and underground exposures, and index testing to gain an appreciation of rock intact strength were used to characterise the sites. Rock mass classification (MRMR) was used to assess indicative overall slope angles and appropriate bench stack heights for the proposed pits at Jinlonggou and Qinlongtan. Measured discontinuity orientations were used in kinematic analysis to assess stability of possible pit slope geometry at a batter and overall scale to provide preliminary recommendations for the pit slope configuration. Numerical modelling was also carried out to improve the understanding of anticipated pit behaviour. Site investigation and preliminary geotechnical design details, that incorporate site specific conditions for the formation of open pits at Tanjianshan, are discussed in this paper.

Two concentrates from Palabora, in South Africa, containing 0.056-0.068% undesirable Cu and 0.8 or 2.2% Ti, were chlorinated with air:chlorine ratios of 10:1, 15:1 and 20:1 at temperatures between 1 200 and 1 329 K. The resulting volatile chlorides were condensed and the solutions analysed for Cu, Fe and Ti. Recovery of Cu was less than 25% at low temperatures and short reaction times, but at 1 258 K almost all Cu was removed from the magnetite at all ratios of chlorine to air. At higher temperatures, the increased carrying over of iron as FeCl3 could be minimised by decreasing the partial pressure of chlorine. No titanium was detected in the volatile products and the percentage of Cu recovered was independent of Ti concentration in the concentrates, though as a function of Cl2 vol%, more Cu was recovered at 1 200 K from the low-Ti than from the high-Ti concentrate. In a fluidised-bed reactor, Cu recovery was 58-90% and iron carry-over less than 10 ppm

In March 2003, Phelps Dodge started up an innovative pressure leach facility for processing copper concentrates at the Bagdad mine in Arizona. This paper describes the development of the concentrate leaching plant at Bagdad and the operational results from start up to present. Optimization efforts and an approach to mineralogical modeling of the concentrate to calculate oxygen utilization are also presented.

Vermiculite is the name of a group of micaceous minerals characterized by their property of exfoliating when heated and thereby increasing many times their original volume. The resulting product has excellent heat-and sound-insulating properties, is used as a lightweight aggregate, and has numerous other industrial applications. Deposits of vermiculite occur in areas of pre-Cambrian rocks of the Llano uplift of central Texas, particularly in Burnet and Llano Counties. Because of the growing economic importance of vermiculite products, the Bureau of Mines undertook a detailed investigation of several deposits in Llano County. This investigation was completed in February 1947. The work comprised topographic surveys of five deposits, drilling with a 4-1/4 inch Parmanco power auger drill, and laboratory evaluation of samples. 342 drill holes, aggregating 4,905.5 feet, were completed, and 377 samples were taken. Laboratory evaluation of the vermiculite comprised expansion tests on both crude and beneficiated samples. The products obtained were compared with commercial-grade vermiculite from Montana.

"The danger of autoclaves lies in the high temperatures and pressures that exist in autoclave vessels. The usage of autoclaves will continue to expand in the mining industry because of their efficiency and environmental friendliness. But increasing attention must be paid to ensuring their safety. Safety Instrumented Systems (SISs) play a critical role in autoclave plants by detecting potentially dangerous conditions, taking the plant to a safe state, informing the operator about the plant status and the cause of the trip and expediting safe plant restart. The SIS should ideally be fully integrated with but functionally independent of the Basic Process Control System (BPCS) and provide redundant logic solvers to increase safety and plant availability while reducing spurious trips.INTRODUCTIONWikipedia defines an autoclave as follows: “An autoclave is a pressurized device invented by Charles Chamberland in 1879 designed to heat aqueous solutions above their boiling point to process materials.” A typical autoclave system used in the metallurgical industry includes, besides the autoclave vessel, heat recovery (heater) vessels, high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) feed pumps, vessel lining systems, specialized internals and components, agitators, pressure letdown or flash vessels, isolation and control valves, over 2,000 I/O points and related instrumentation, and emergency relief systems."

In today's rapid changing construction world, the business pressures on piling and deep foundations reach sky-high levels. Ever increasing complexity of construction projects do severely contribute to these business pressures. Projects are often constructed in densely populated areas and located close to vulnerable buildings and infrastructure. The inherent uncertainty of ground conditions plays a dominating role in these foundation projects. Effective risk management is a key success factor for profitable and sustainable operations of piling and deep foundations. It starts with a fundamental requirement to be aware of risks. Next the different risk perspectives of all stakeholders in any foundation project have to be acknowledged. A simple and structured risk management approach is introduced, to demonstrate that effective risk management is not necessarily that complicated. A major element is the contractual allocation of risks, as a result from differing ground conditions. It is based on the so-called Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR). The main objective of the GBR is to provide a clear contractual arrangement for the allocation of risks, arising from differing site conditions. The benefits of explicit risk management in general and contractual risk allocation in particular are illustrated with an example and experiences. The presented structured risk management approach, including contractual risk allocation, is still rather new. It proves to be promising for cost-effective risk control of piling and deep foundation projects, anywhere in the world.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health partnered with the water well industry to develop engi­neering control technologies and training products to address noise exposure at the job site. Noise­induced hearing loss continues to be a problem in the well drilling industry. Research con­ducted by NIOSH found that air rotary drill rigs produce sound levels more than 90 dB(A) over the course of an eight­hour workday. Sounds levels above 90 dB(A), identified during hammer drilling and the hammering of casing, exposes workers to levels that can damage hearing. A typical air rotary drill rig provides no barrier, for noise and dust pro­tection, between the drill’s control panel and the drill stem. The development of a partial cab is the clearest example of NIOSH’s research partnership with the water well industry. NIOSH researchers determined that an engineering noise control to protect the oper­ator at the rig’s control panel would be effective, based on typical work site conditions. Many surface rigs do not have full cabs as a result of the original equipment manufacturer design or the high cost of aftermarket products. Developed as a partial cab, the NIOSH engineer­ing noise control design addressed stakeholders’ needs associated with cost, transport, and worker usage (Figure 1). Field tests found the partial cab effective in reducing sound levels at the rig’s control panel, a typical location for a drill rig operator. Sound levels at the control panel were reduced from 104 to 96 dB(A) (Figure 2). Coupled with continued use of personal protective equipment, such as hear­ing protection devices, the partial cab can help to reduce noise exposure. NIOSH researchers created a CD with informa­tion about noise exposure and the partial cab. Most important to well drilling companies is information on how to construct and attach the partial cab to drill rigs. The CD can be viewed on a standard computer and includes a video of the partial cab in use on a work site. Computer­aided design drawings are included on the CD and provide detail of the cab design as well as information on construction mate­rials and design details. Additionally, the CD provides background infor­mation on noise­induced hearing loss and hearing protection devices to increase knowledge about this occupational health concern. This information can be viewed by all company employees to help promote the partial cab’s importance to workers using the cab. More information on the partial cab noise control technology can be downloaded from www.cdc.gov/ niosh/mining NIOSH researchers also examined the health and safety training needs of workers in the ground water industry. It was quickly realized that most workers learn health and safety on the job and do not attend any sort of formal training. In addition, there is not a lot of time for daily “tailgate talks” or “shop talks” on health and safety issues. As a small business industry, the owner is often operating a drill rig along with his other employees. In general, new employees learn the job in an apprentice style sys­tem. As a result, workers and owners have few opportunities to access uniform health and safety information based upon the job — an outdoor work environment with daily change in work sites. With this information, NIOSH researchers devel­oped two products that deliver health and safety information to fit into the daily work of well drillers. The profitability of gold placer mining operations is determined by more factors than many placer miners recognise until too late. This study is based upon field trips to examine the efficiency of mining and transportation of gravels to a wash plant by bulldozer and truck. At the examined open pit mining operations gravels were washed using water canons, derockers or scrubber trommels. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between unit costs and power requirements for gravel mining and processing. The author conducted a number of time and motion studies at four open pit gold mines, including the Maly Patom Creek, the Nizhny Patom, the Taimendra Creek and the Kadali-Makit in the Bodaibo District, Irkutsk Region and collected and processed field data. As a part of the study significant correlations were determined and empiric regression equations derived between: power requirements (Ep) and unit cost (Cp) for gravel processing; and total power requirements (Et) and total unit cost (Ct) for gravel mining, transportation and processing. Based on the results of the study it was proposed to modify the current mining procedure methods and to replace water cannons at the Maly Patom Creek with a PPM-5 derocker. Introduction of the proposed technology resulted in 2004 in US$385 000 mining cost reduction at the Maly Patom Creek over a short-time Siberian mining season.

An examination of 60 mines, 11 illumination hardware manufacturers, and Q mobile face-equipment manufacturers was conducted to determine the state of the art of mine-illumination hardware, define lighting system installation and maintenance problems, and assess personnel acceptance of lighting. Longwall and mobile face-machine illumination were studied. Major problems on room and pillar installations include damage of exposed components, electrical failures, and reduced lamp life, with extreme variability in the degree of these problems. Most longwall systems had low or moderate maintenance requirements, cable damage being the most significant problem. Most mobile face-equipment operators liked their machines' lighting systems, but many complained of glare and other problems. Longwall lighting was unanimously accepted by face personnel, and most complaints were minor. Based on the survey, general installation and maintenance guidelines have been established, addressing hardware design aspects, approaches proved effective to minimize problems, and improper practices noted which are detrimental to effective lighting.
