There are a number of factors that contribute to the profitability of a mine and its associated concentrator. Chief among these is the time taken from the first hoist of material from underground to the first batch of concentrate shipped. The main aim of this project was to integrate the mining model with a concentrator production schedule to minimize the time it would take to produce concentrate (without the concentrator having to stop because of a lack of feed material) in the most capital-effective manner. A secondary goal was to ensure detailed stockpiling requirements, as the concentrator is in an area where 'visual pollution' is to be avoided. To achieve these two goals a dynamic stockpile model was created by utilizing the mine production schedule and breaking it down to a daily production figure. Four different concentrator development models were then proposed. The difference between the mine production and concentrator consumption was integrated over the life of the mine to provide the accumulated stockpile tonnages for both Merensky and UG2 ore. To prevent a situation where the concentrator was operational without any feed, the stockpile levels were never allowed to fall below zero. When a development option was selected, the standard metallurgical performance calculations were used to derive a concentrate production schedule, which was used as a basis for commercial negotiations for the sale of concentrate.

Good operation of Soderberg electrodes is dependent upon high quality electrode paste coupled with better electrode management procedures. Without having a good electrode operation, it is not possible to obtain the best outcome from the furnace. In other words that is a good way to say how important the proper electrode operation is. Good electrode performance depends on the slipping rate and current levels, which decides the shape of the baking curve at the level of just below the contact clamps. Negative curvature of baking zone in the central part is considered dangerous because shrinkage takes place outwardly creating abnormal stresses in the electrode. Soft breakages occur when the baking zone comes below the clamps and the casing cannot take the current. This paper deals with various factors affecting baking characteristics leading to soft breakages and also presents case studies in a closed 48MVA furnace with smelting for charge chrome. In case studies in a closed furnace, it has happened that the energy for baking at the low current operation before breakage has been lower than the actual slipping has demanded. At low current there should not be problem, but a problem can occur when the current for some period is raised above the current carrying capacity of the casing. So data for electrode operation in actual period was studied and presented in this paper.

It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2. Quench and tempered Cr-Mo plate steel was found not to contain a fully martensitic structure as a result of either slow slack quenching or insufficient hardenability at the cooling rates used. The resulting microstructure contains bainite in combination with martensite. It is necessary to examine the implications of bainite for the toughness of the final product. Loss of toughness arises primarily from the inter-lath carbides that typically form in upper bainite. An investigation into the effect of upper bainite in a martensitic matrix of a steel grade containing 0.17% C, 0.1% Cr, 0.54% Mo, and 20 ppm Bindicated lower toughness than in a fully martensitic structure.

A GREAT deal of attention has lately been given to the discussion as to the education required for engineers, and especially for mining engineers. The Institute of Civil Engineers has had a committee's report on it which has come to some interesting and valuable conclusions.The Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had a few years back a very long discussion on the subject, and the subject appears to be one of perennial interest to similar societies. Two recent addresses by Prof. Kernot, as president of the Victorian Instituteof Civil Engineers, are among the most interesting and practical of the contributions to the discussion. Engineers seem to feel either that the coming generation has not the same capacity to benefit by the training that has made themselves what they are, or that such training has turned out in themselves inefficient men, and that they must consequently struggle to obtain a better one for their successors. For not only is there a desire to extend existing instruction to cover the advances of science, but there seems to be a general desire also to make a completely radical change in the methods.It is not necessary to observe that education does not mean the imparting and acquiring of information, but rather the cultivation of the faculties so that the best use can be made of them and of any information acquired. For instance, a man is not educated who has by heart his lectures and the contents of his text-books, but that man is who remembers little of the actual wording of his text-books, but is able to find anything required in them...

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. The aim of this program was to develop a reliable and meaning-ful basis for assessing certain safety aspects, namely fire and, in particular, toxicity hazards of articles employed in underground coal mining operations. The present investigation was concentrated on the thermal oxidative degradation of representative hydraulic fluids. To achieve this goal all products formed on thermal oxidative degradation of the fluids studied were analyzed, identified I and the amount of each individual species present was determined quantitatively on a weight of product per weight of material basis. The weight/weight data thus obtained can then be factorized to reflect the relative toxicity of each individual species present, using for example the Threshold Limit Values adopted by the American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists, whereby an overall "toxicity index" can be arrived at which makes it possible to compare the different fluids and/or classes of fluids in a quantitative manner insofar as their toxicity is concerned.

Laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of ladle slag composition on the decreasing behaviour of aluminum content in steel, i.e., reoxidation of molten steel in contact with slag, using a vertical tube furnace. The steel composition and the slag system chosen were for ultra low carbon and CaO-Al2O3-FeO-MnO-MgO based to simulate ULC steel grades. It has been observed that the reoxidation rate shows a good relationship with (T. Fe) content in slag. In case of (T. Fe) content higher than 1.5 weight per cent, the reoxidation rate increases linearly with increasing (T. Fe) content. For a given (T. Fe) content, it decreases with the increasing (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. However, in the case of (T. Fe) content lower than 1.5 weight percent, no particular relationships are observed between the reoxidation rate and (T. Fe) content or the (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. These results were used to propose for an aim a slag composition for the ULC steel grades in a steelmaking plant. The Commission maintains a data base first computerised in 1957 and containing information from over 18 000 boreholes located mainly in the Latrobe Valley area. Some of the borehole derived information dates from the turn of the century, although most of it has been collected as a result of Commission investigations conducted over the past 40 years. The Resource Data Base contains not only information gained directly from the drilling itself but includes the results of chemical and physical testing on many hundreds of thousands of samples retrieved from boreholes. Replacement value of the Resource Data Base has been estimated to be around $200 million, and it's integrity and accessibility is clearly of paramount importance, not only to existing mining and power generating functions but to the future evaluation and use of the vast brown coal Resource.

Research on the solid-fuel reduction of Knob Lake iron or was conducted to upgrade lean and high-grade ores and recover metallized products suitable for ironmaking or steelmaking. The program included bench-scale tests plus a number of continuous campaigns in a 34-inch by 36-foot rotary kiln. In the laboratory, metallizations in excess of 90 percent were achieved by reduction of crushed ore with lignite at 950° C. Subsequent grinding (to minus 200 mesh) and wet magnetic separation yielded concentrates analyzing less than 3.0 percent SiO2 and more than 90 percent Fe. Virtually complete recovery of the iron occurred. During early continuous tests the crushed ore created a serious ringing in the kiln which was solved by balling the fines with bentonite. Unfortunately, at this temperature (950° C) the bentonite militates against the concentratability of the metallized product. For example, a run on direct-shipping ore produced concentrates of 89.5 percent Fe and 4.5 percent SiO2. At 500° C the adverse effect of bentonite disappeared and concentrates of 88.4 Fe and only 2.5 percent SiO2 resulted. However, with comparable feed r Los, the metallization dropped to 73 percent.

The disposal of scrap tires has been a serious environmental problem. The treatment of this waste by pyrolysis and combustion has advantages since the landfill space is dwindling and the production of fuel becomes of technological interest. However, that processes needs a rigid control of emissions. This work presents a study of the light hydrocarbon gases (HC) generated during the burn of waste tire chips in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace. Different temperatures in the primary and secondary stage of the furnace were tested, and the oxygen/nitrogen percentage was also varied during the combustion process. A gas chromatograph was used to identify and quantify the components of the gaseous products of combustion and pyrolysis. The results showed the behavior of the gases during the burn of tires, providing valuable information to the control of hydrocarbon emissions.

Geologic faults have always been a plague to the mining industry, and have often reduced a mining venture from a profitable to a marginal operation, and even at times have forced companies to liquidation or bankruptcy. The use of geology as an economic tool in coal mining is not generally recognized, particularly in coal deposits which are horizontal or essentially flat-lying, in which faulting might not be prevalent. However in pitching coal seams, the existence of faults is considered an inherent challenge, as the inclination of the seam or seams per se, is a product of geologic disturbance. The problems of faults are a constant challenge to the management of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. in their operations in Pitkin County, Colorado, where high grade medium volatile coking coal is mined. The background for this paper has been provided by the experiences of these operations, in overcoming the effects of faults in mining, and resolving the fault structures. The properties of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. are located in central Colorado, 13 miles southwest of Carbondale, Colorado, a tow] on the main highway between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, Fig. 1. The elevation at the mine portals is approximately 8000 feet: there is a relief of some 2.000 feet to the adjacent ridges rising away from the [nine portals. 'The entire present production of these properties totaling 180.000 tons of clean coal per year is trucked to the railhead at Carbondale, Colorado, from whence it is shipped to the Geneva Steel Plant at Provo, Utah. The properties were initially opened in September 1952. A total of 125 men are currently employed with the production conting from the Number 1 and 3 Mines, and development workings of the Number 2 and 5 Mines respectively. While the No. 2 Vine was opened in 1953 prior to No, 3 Mine, the encountering of faults without sufficient development work accomplished to sustain production, necessitated the diversion of manpower to the other [nines for economic considerations. The Statnamic loading test is a new and innovative method for testing deep foundations. The test is relatively inexpensive, quick, easily mobilized, provides for direct measurement of applied load and corresponding displacement, and is capable of very high loading capacities. The long duration of the applied loading, as compared to a dynamic loading test, allows for a straightforward determination of the static behaviour of the foundation tested. A new method of analysis of the Statnamic loading test, the Equilibrium Point Method, is presented. A description is given of the pile-soil model and a demonstration of how the static load-displacement behaviour of deep foundations may be predicted from the Statnamic loading test data. The Equilibrium Point Method of analysis is applied to three types of deep foundations in soils which respond differently to fast loading rates. These case histories, from Canada and the United States, include data from static loading tests for direct comparison, and demonstrate the ability of the Equilibrium Point Method to predict static behaviour of the deep foundations.

Multiple agencies in Southern California are retrofitting and upgrading their levees to catch up with ever-advancing urbanization affecting the requirements for existing channels and levees in this seismically active zone. Pressed-in sheet piles have been specified on some of these projects to minimize noise and vibration problems associated with sheet pile installation. This paper will study three Southern California levee and sewer pipeline retrofit projects that utilized pressed-in sheet piles in hard soil conditions with N-values higher than 50. BACKGROUND Southern California is home to numerous drainage channels fortified with earthen levees. In spite of the region’s semi-arid climate with varying annual precipitation from year to year, winter storms can bring in heavy and continuous rainfall to the area which overwhelms the levees’ capacities at times. Some levees are running through densely populated areas with homes and other sensitive structures such as underground utilities and bridge piers. Conventional sheet pile driving utilizes either percussive or vibratory pile driving methods, both of which generate high levels of noise and vibration, causing nuisance and potential damage to nearby structures. On the other hand, the press-in piling method utilizes a hydraulic force to push piles into the ground, thus practically eliminating the noise and vibration issue. Although there are types of press-in piling systems mounted on tall leaders on large crawler-base machines, they are less frequently used due to its much larger size and more limited drivability than the type discussed hereunder. The other type of press-in machine sits on top of already installed piles and is anchored with its own weight and additional counter weight when starting off as shown in Figure 1. Once the first few piles are pressed in, the equipment grips on top of the installed piles and moves forward on its own as the pile installation progresses. See Figure 2. This method does not use a vibratory or percussive force to install piles.

This paper briefly describes the progress in mine safety in the United States, with emphasis on recent events that have followed since the explosion at the Sago Mine in January 2006. Legislation following the mine accidents last year and areas of work carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) related to the accidents are discussed. American coal production in 2006 was 1,150 million short tons. Most of this coal is consumed domestically, with annual exports of coal about 50 million tons. One third of annual production is produced at surface mines and the rest from underground. This coal is produced by about 82,000 miners working at 1,400 coal mines. Major improvements in coal mine safety have been made in the US since the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. The fatal injury rate in underground coal mines between 1977 and 2004 was reduced by 47.8% to 0.036. The annual number of fatalities dropped from 112 to 14 during that period. Likewise, the non-fatal days-lost injury rate was reduced by 42.6% from 10.87 to 6.24. The improvements in mine safety during this period can be seen in the graph of underground coal mine explosion fatalities and injuries from 1980 to present, which is shown in Figure 1. Between 1984 and 1993 (9 year period) there were 5 explosions and one major mine fire, for a total of 55 fatalities. Over the seven year period from 1993 to 1999 there were no fatalities from coal mine fires and explosions. However, in the six years since 2000 there have been 5 explosions and one fire, which have caused 37 fatalities. [ ]

Modern transportation systems are one of the most important achievements of our civilization and provide us with tools for broadening individual and social freedom of choice. The transportation system initiated today is handed dawn to the next generation, probably with little choice because of the enormous expenditure of monies involved, and influence their way of life as to where they should live and where they should work. The ever increasing antagonism between the citizens and the planners of the transportation systems necessitates a careful review of the entire planning process. The planning process can be broadly classified into: the goal formulation and decision making process; the plan development process; and the plan implementation process. THE GOAL FORMULATION AND DECISION MAKING PROCESS Goal formulation and decision making is one of the vital phases of the planning process and is primarily based upon social values. In measuring social values, the planner must employ an appropriate scale of measurement since in the absence of this yardstick, these values tend to became vague and abstract ideals. The need for major social programs and concerns (poverty, etc.) of the urban areas should be analyzed to determine the type of transportation system which would contribute to the solution.
