"The base metal mine at Buchans, Newfoundland, has been producing since 1928. For many years, mill tailings were disposed of by dumping into a nearby natural watercourse via which they were transported to Red Indian Lake and deposited. In 1965, environmental concerns prompted the establishment of settling ponds near the mine site. Effluents fed to these ponds included slimes washed from mine backfill sand and waste water pumped from underground as well as mill tailings. Dusting around the perimeter of the ponds was first observed around 1970and within a couple ofyears reached serious proportions. A program to alleviate the condition by developing a vegetative cover over the tailings was commenced in 1974. The work was successfully carried out and demonstrated that the large area of waste could sustain a permanent cover of grasses.This paper outlines the experimental work done at Buchans as well as the procedures followed and the problems encountered in carrying out full-scale revegetation."

"Rock properties have a material impact on mining processes, including drilling performance. An investigation using point loaded index (PLI) data converted to uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) has revealed that a direct relationship between grain size and UCS exists at Mogalakwena Mine. This correlation is best seen in unaltered rock, with lower correlations for altered rock types. Measurements from the new RockMa system installed on drill rigs can be used to obtain rock strength data to validate the current rock strength domains and create additional data for the next benches below. An investigation of penetration rates in different lithologies shows that rock composition plays an important role in determining drill performance. Additionally, there is an inverse relationship between rock strength and drilling penetration rate – a measure of how efficiently a hole is drilled.The domaining of grain-size-adjusted UCS at Mogalakwena Mine will allow more accurate scheduling of drill rigs through increased knowledge of rock strength in various areas. Successful rock strength domaining has the potential to be incorporated into blast indexing and predicting crushing/milling performance.IntroductionThe optimization of mining and processing through geometallurgical characterization of ore are key drivers of value realization (Deutch, 2013). Rock strength is one such property and is affected by, among other variables, composition, texture, and grain size (Ozturk, Nasuf, and Kahraman, 2014). Mogalakwena Mine is exploiting the intrusive Platreef PGE (platinum group element)-bearing orebody which forms part of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This complex orebody exhibits areas of metasomatic alteration, metamorphism, and sporadic mineralization of the footwall and hangingwall (Nex et al., 2006). Understanding this variability is paramount due to the implications for rock strength and hardness, which in turn affect crushing, milling, and liberation efficiency. These variables must be known prior to blasting in order to optimize mine and plant processes using in-situ variables. This necessitates predictive modelling (Deutch, 2013). Geological and geotechnical data was sourced from the Overysel (OY) exploration database for the study. Point load testing was done for each borehole and the results converted to uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) (Akram and Bakar, 2007). The relationship of lithology, texture, and grain size with UCS revealed an inverse relationship between grain size and UCS in unaltered rock. The relationship was not present in altered rock types. A comparison of mean strength and hardness results indicated that Bond work index and UCS may be related. Drilling performance is affected by UCS (Bourgoyne et al., 1986), and this was proven using recent measurements obtained during drilling. Lastly, grain-sizeadjusted UCS values were applied to a 3D model for the OY property."

Attempts to analyze the stability of slopes, foundations and underground openings in discontinuously jointed rock have generally assumed full joint continuity or ignored the role of stress concentration at the tips of discontinuous joints. The most common approach in rock slopes is to consider a failure plane consisting of coplanar, but discontinuous joints separated by intact rock. The intact rock is assumed to fail in shear as a MohrCoulomb material and to contribute a strength component proportional to the fraction of the failure plane that is intact rock (Jennings, 1970). An alternative approach by Stimpson (1978) applies Lajtai's (1969) theory for shear strength of discontinuously jointed rock masses to slopes. Lajtai allows tensile failure in the intact rock of a composite surface. This theory yields lower shear strength than that of Jennings (1970) except in the presence of high normal compression, however it also fails to account for the stress concentration at the tip of a discontinuous joint. For a given slope geometry, stresses increase with slope height, but in both of these models rock mass strength is independent of size. A fracture mechanics analysis shows that particularly for small slopes, rock mass strength decreases with size.A continuous stepped failure surface produced by propagation of preexisting joints may develop at lower shear stress than pre¬dicted by the Jennings (1970) or Lajtai (1969) models. This fracture mechanics model applied to slopes in competent rock is more realistic in its assumed failure mechanism, and for large slopes more conservative than the Jennings (1970) or Lajtai models (1969).

The French research institute, INERIS, requested the assistance of the CSIR?s Division of Mining Technology in developing further precautionary measures against explosions in their collieries. In response to this approach, an on-board active suppression system was adapted to meet their mining requirements. This system is used on tunnelling machines in Germany where the machine is positioned in the middle of the tunnel, which is therefore not much wider than the machine itself. With this configuration, the machine is never away from the tunnel face during the cutting cycle. As a result, the possible volume in front of the machine of combustible gas requiring suppression is less than 50 m3. In South Africa this technology has been adapted to suit a two-cut mining method which entails greater distances from the face and thus much larger volumes of methane mixtures requiring suppression. The particular configuration of the Explo-Stop® system being investigated required the suppression of possible methane ignition volumes of up to 180 m3of a 9% per volume methane/air mixture. The volume is a consequence of the large cross-sectional area of French underground workings and of the two-cut mining method used in France. In order to take the second cut in the coal seam, the machine is pulled back a maximum distance of 4 m, leaving an air pocket in which gas can accumulate. The machine-mounted system is required to effectively suppress any flame ignited by such a large accumulated volume of methane. The results of the protocol tests done at Kloppersbos showed that the system was capable of suppressing all simulated methane ignitions for the prescribed conditions. This was achieved with a temperature increase of less than a 100°C at the operator?s position and without any flame being detected at this position.

I. INTRODUCTION West Virginia has a long history of coal production.1 The state at one time led the nation in total coal production, while at the same time coal from West Virginia constituted one quarter of total U.S. coal production.2 In more recent years, however, West Virginia’s level of coal production has been reduced in comparison to that of other states due to the high relative cost of producing coal in the state.3 Another blow to the producers of coal in West Virginia is the action known as Bragg v. Robertson.4 In 1998 various individual plaintiffs, as well as a conservation group known as the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, filed a civil action under a provision of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, Pub. L. No. 95-87, §522, 91 Stat. 445 (codified at 30 U.S.C. §§1201-1328) ("SMCRA" or the "Act") that allows declaratory and injunctive relief against state and federal officials for non-compliance with the Act.5 The plaintiffs generally claimed that the Director of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection ("WVDEP") had exhibited a pattern of violating mandatory non-discretionary duties under SMCRA and the West Virginia state regulatory program.6 These non-discretionary duties involved many areas of regulation, including water quality standards, disturbance of wetlands, hydrologic reclamation plans, Approximate Original Contour ("AOC") requirements and AOC variances, post-mining land uses, contemporaneous reclamation, and as explained later, the "buffer zone rule."7 In addition to these claims against WVDEP, the plaintiffs also alleged that certain individual members of the Army Corps of Engineers (the "Corps") had failed to carry out statutory duties under the Clean Water Act (the "CWA") and the National Environmental Policy Act ("NEPA").8 Generally, the complaint stated that the Corps did not have statutory authority under the CWA to regulate valley fills created for the purpose of the disposal of waste material, i.e., the overburden associated with mountain top mining.9 Alternatively, the plaintiffs claimed that even if the Corps could regulate valley fills, the Corps violated NEPA by issuing nationwide permits without required analysis. Finally, the plaintiffs asserted that the issuance of a nationwide permit for surface mining valley fills is unlawful.10

Lacy copper has been an on-going concern at Atlantic Copper for at least 10 years and was first reported to Glencore Technology in mid-2010. Over the past 12 years, many of the plates were replaced due to age and general deterioration however; plate passivation and lacy copper issues have persisted. After analyzing all the possible causes of this phenomena, it was found that the problem is caused by a degradation of stainless steel as a consequence of the deposition of Sb oxides. These deposits act as passivating agents of stainless steel, which reduces the density of copper nuclei, causing defective copper deposit, with low thickness and ductility. After doing several tests for reducing/removing the phenomena, the over-riding factor was found to be the anode-cathode overlap. An adequate overlap eliminates the problem of "lacy copper". This was verified during an eight month trial with anodes extended 2.5cm in length. Longer anode not only avoids the appearance of lacy copper, but also recovers cathodes that already have lacy copper. On the other hand polishing of plates only gives rise to a temporary solution that requires on-going polishing, to avoid the re-appearance of lacy copper. INTRODUCTION The electrolytic copper refinery of Atlantic Copper in Huelva (Spain) was commissioned in 1970 with an initial capacity of 40,000 t of cathodes per year. In 1975 the copper refinery was expanded to 108,000 t/year. From 1994 to 1996, a new expansion together with the implementation of ISA permanent cathode technology led to a capacity of 215,000 t/y. Since 1995, a progressive increase in the current density up to 350 A/m2 has been accomplished, which together with an increase in the number of cells from 1,120 to 1,204, has led to the present cathode production capacity of 290,000 t/y A lack of copper deposition in the lower part of the steel permanent cathodes was first reported in 2010. This phenomenon is known as “Lacy copper” because of the appearance of the copper deposit as it can be seen in Figure 1. The occurrence of this phenomena was relatively low and was assumed to be originated by an excessive anode scrapping. Nevertheless, in December 2015 Lacy Copper was observed in a significant amount of copper cathodes giving rise to the following issues: Increased tramp copper – housekeeping and maintenance problems Poor appearance of cathode deposit and untidy looking bundles

As a part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing natural resources in Alaska, the Bureau of Mines studied the tin-bearing gold-placer deposits in the Tofty area of the Hot Springs district in central Alaska. The principal objective of the Bureau's work was to obtain facts about the extent and character of the placer deposits (including tailing) to indicate the economic or strategic tin-production potential of the Tofty "tin belt." A secondary objective was to determine (if possible) the bedrock Source of the cassiterite and other minerals found in the placer deposits. The placer phase of the work was begun in July 1954 and was continued during the 1955 and 1956 field seasons. Extensions to, and connections between, known placer channels were sought by 82 churn-drill holes. The Bureau drilling did not expand the placer deposits beyond the limits established by drift-mining operations and by previous drilling done by private concerns.

"As part of an investigation into flotation modelling of industrial scale operations, Falconbridge Ltd organised a “blind” test of the SUPASIM flotation model developed by Eurus Mineral Consultants (EMC). Two sets of rougher rate data, a flowsheet and the number and size of cells in the rougher bank were supplied from a plant that had been previously surveyed in November 2003. The name of the plant, cleaner circuit details and circuit mass balance were, at the time, unknown to EMC. With only these data, flotation performance was simulated and the cleaner circuit sizedFalconbridge then compared predicted and actual float performance and mass balance and found that final concentrate recovery and mass and circuit cell volume matched closely. Simulated recoveries relative to actual were +0.4% Cu, +0.1% Ni and -0.7% Co. However, prediction of metal distribution in the internal streams making up the various circulating loads showed some sizeable errors. On this initial success, the trial was extended and additional float test data for rougher feed, cleaner feed and cleaner scavenger feed was generated on site in April 2005. Further simulations significantly improved prediction accuracy for metal distribution in the internal streams. The average difference between predicted and actual recovery for all streams was reduced from 10.5% to 0.4%. This updated simulation was then used to ascertain the impact on final recovery, grade and plant circulating loads of increasing feed tonnage from 114 to 150t/hr. A number of scenarios were simulated in order to understand the contribution that (a) the fast and slow floating fractions and (b) regrinding of cleaner tailings are making to overall plant recovery.Simulation was then used to determine how much the flotation kinetics of both rougher feed and cleaner scavenger feed have to increase in order to deliver a 1.5% improvement in overall plant recovery. These improved kinetic values provide a target for laboratory testwork and operating conditions can be varied to determine how best to achieve these new values of fraction and rate."

For the past four years, the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky has conducted a validation study of the CFD Fluent code, by comparing its results against mining-related benchmark experimental data provided by NIOSH?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. This particular study is dedicated to the effect of machine-mounted dust scrubbers on the performance of face ventilation systems using extended-cut mining with a blowing curtain.

Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), located in north-western Queensland, is an underground copper/gold sublevel caving operation currently producing over 6 Mt/a of ore. The mass mining method of sublevel caving (SLC) used at EHM involves systematically blasting a series of uphole rings in parallel ore drives and drawing the broken ore using a top-down approach. Each ore drive contains multiple precharged rings to prevent having to charge in close proximity to the brow of the previously fired ring; however, the current initiation system still involves ‘hooking up’ all detonator lead cords of the first precharged ring. The unstable nature of a rill and working close to a brow presents hazards to personnel completing the hook-up process. There is also a business risk of ore loss when damaged ground support completely prevents access to the next precharged ring. If the hook-up step could be eliminated, the risk to personnel and the business would be significantly reduced.EHM engaged Orica Mining Services in 2016 to trial their WebGenTM 100 – wireless electronic blasting system (WEBSTM) for the first time in an underground mining environment. Having successfully signal-tested the equipment, two test holes were initiated, followed by a single production ring and then multiple production rings. In total, 30 production rings were successfully fired underground at EHM in 2017. To do this, WEBSTM was successfully integrated into EHM’s current charging and firing process, resulting in no business delays or loss to production. None of the 30 rings required hooking up and all were initiated from the surface with no personnel underground. A high level of ownership from all personnel involved ensured the trial was a success, and provided scope for wireless detonators to be used successfully on a large scale – both at EHM and other sublevel caving operations. Artificial ground freezing is the unrivalled method for groundwater control during mine shaft sinking. Moreover, ground freezing may also provide temporary ground support. The fast development of fibre-optic temperature monitoring devices, three-dimensional freeze pipe survey methods and numerical modelling software provide grounds for developing new and reliable tools for ground control during freeze shaft sinking. This paper presents examples of predictive numerical models that are based on back-analysis and calibration of temperature data that covers the complete construction cycle from pre-freezing through to artificial thawing. The back-analyses showed that standard numerical models are not capable of predicting the prevailing thermo-mechanical conditions satisfactorily. This paper describes the development and implementation of new tools for improved consideration of concrete hydration and latent heat, along with the introduction of other algorithms that improve and simplify the efforts of managing complex numerical models. A function is presented that allows for an automated correction of the model’s mesh based on results of three-dimensional freeze pipe surveys. This paper demonstrates that the latter consideration is important, because the often employed assumption of idealised freeze circle geometry in numerical models impacts on the accuracy of such model’s predictions. Subsequently, the verification of these extended numerical models is demonstrated. Due to its flexibility, the FLAC3DTM code was employed for the numerical modelling. This software provides the possibility of implementing additional functions written in internal FISH or Python language into the models. It is concluded that state-of-the-art techniques for freeze hole drilling and surveying, on-site monitoring and advanced numerical analysis provide a significant potential for both the design and the operation of largescale ground freezing measures. The application of the extended numerical models for predictive simulations during construction allows for temporary shaft lining optimisation, for assisting in operational decision making and for compensating temporary loss of monitoring data. This publication summarizes, for potential contractors and all other interested parties, the research and development of in-house and contract projects programmed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1983 (October 1, 1982-September 30, 1983) under its Health and Safety Technology program. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advance toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a more healthful and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.

Planning of New York’s new subway line dictated the location of shallow underground station caverns and track crossovers. Clear span openings ranging from70 feet to 100 feet and lengths in excess of 1000 feet, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 25 feet to 40 feet required judicious selection of construction methods, equipment, and proper sequencing of the excavation stages. Rock classifications alone could not predict the behavior of the rock mass during construction. A robust design procedure that considered most of the important aspects of rock behavior and elements of shallow tunnel design, minimized the negative impacts of variable geotechnical data. This paper describes the intricacies of the planning and design of the $16 billion Second Avenue Subway with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

This report describes the development of training materials for the operators of underground mining equipment in the underground metal and nonmetal mining industry. The objective was to determine the effectiveness and acceptability of these training materials and to provide the validated training materials to the industry. Ten modules were developed, based on industry need according to accident frequency, accident severity and exposure to the equipment. The final modules were an average of 20 minutes in length and used slides with synchronized narration on cassette tapes. Testing materials are included for use by the mines.

"INTRODUCTIONThe renaissance in gold and silver recovery technology has continued to unfold and it is appropriate to review some of the useful new technologies as well as try to identify some of the industry's future needs and frontiers.The remarkable strengthening in the US dollar has resulted in a relatively low gold price in US Dollars of around $310/oz at the time of writing and silver at $6.25/oz. This general softening in the dollar prices and the recent confusion as to environmental compatibility of cyanidation tailings and effluents, has led to a slowdown in announcements of new operations. Another reason for the slackening off in the USA is that in the past few years a large part of the capital has come from oi I and gas companies that now seem to be losing interest in mineral ventures, and foreign investors for whom the dollar is becoming out of reach. In the author's opinion this represents an unprecedented window of opportunity.Elsewhere in the world where local currencies have weakened, the price of gold is at or close to its all time high.For example, in South African Rands, the gold price was R571.00/oz when the rand was US$1.47 and the gold price reached US$800. Now at US $309/oz and with the Rand at US$0.51 = Rl .00, the local gold price is R600. The price of si Iver in Mexican pesos is not much less than it was when silver reached US$50/oz. Gold, and silver prices in local currencies outside North America are still buovant and at levels where additional investment in new projects is more encouraging.Even in Canada where the dollar is worth about US$0. 75, this provides a smaller but significant cushion compared with US operations. Considering the present strength of the US dollar and even the Canadian dollar relative to many other gold producing countries, there should be significant investment opportunities at today's prices. Mining companies have started to descend on Brazil, for example, where in a matter of just a few years annual gold production has increased from 10 to 70 tons. In South Africa, a Canadian company backed by Swiss financing has been able to take over a Witwatersrand gold mining operation and is installing a huge new tailin9s retreatment plant to process about 1 million tons per month of tailings."

This report describes the loading and transportation practices employed at the zinc-lead mines of The Eagle-Picher Co., Jo Daviess County, Ill., and Lafayette County, Wis. The report also gives a brief history of the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc-lead district and the operations of the company in the area. The diesel-powered, rubber-tired loading and haulage equipment is described and illustrated from the operational point of view only, and an analysis is made of the materials-handling system without going into health and safety Factors. The costs per ton of the various components of mechanical loading, underground haulage, underground crushing, and hoisting for fiscal year 1960 are tabulated.

The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk. The iron ore mining industry is currently going through an adjustment from high to more moderate growth as China’s economy transitions from capital-intensive investment to a more services-oriented economy. We are now witnessing a renewed focus on productivity improvements and cost savings as planned expansions are completed. Despite the scale and importance that the mining industry plays in the global economy, innovation literature is generally more targeted at faster-moving industries with shorter innovation timeframes and lower capital requirements. To fill this gap, VCI set out to understand the state of innovation in the mining industry in 2014. This State of Play report aims to give an objective appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of innovation in mining. The report has three sections covering both the structure and delivery of innovation in mining:Ecosystem – focused on understanding how the iron ore mining innovation ecosystem system works, including the roles of large and small miners, service companies, researchers and governments. Our recommendations focus on what is required for the system to work well and improve the level and quality of innovation in the industry.Strategy – how do companies define their innovation strategy in relation to their corporate strategy? How are these related to prevailing global and industry trends? How do they communicate this with their business? How successful are they? These are among the questions that this section attempts to answer. Our recommendations are pitched at the executive leadership of iron ore mining and service companies.Delivery – focused on how companies develop and deliver innovation, looking at the success of different structural options, leadership and culture, partnerships and the best approaches to change.
