Introduction. OF the treatment of the slime-pulp of gold- and silver-ores by cyanidation, agitation is an essential part. When prepared for treatment, this pulp, consisting of ore reduced to such fineness that approximately 80 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen, is mixed with a certain proportion of water, carrying in solution the quantity of cyanide (KCN) and other chemicals required. The water-constituent of the pulp thus prepared usually ranges from 1 to 2 parts by weight to 1 of the dry ore. Thus constituted', the pulp is charged into treatment-tanks, the shape and capacity of which vary, according to the quantity of pulp to be treated daily and the method of agitation to be employed. Tanks have no other function in a cyanide-plant than that of being economical and convenient containers or receptacles for holding the pulp, solution, or water used in the operations. It is by agitation that the solids in the pulp charged into the tanks are kept in suspension in, and mixed with, the solution in the proper proportions required for the treatment. If the proper mixture of solution to solids be determined to be 2 to 1 by weight (which is, approximately, 5 to 1 by volume), this proportion should be maintained in every part of the charge ; -that is, each solid particle of the pulp, whether it be of 180- or 400-mesh size, should, be surrounded by five times its own volume of solution throughout the whole period of treatment. The reason is, that the amount of chemicals ascertained to be necessary for dissolving the gold and silver contained in the solids, is held in uniform solution in the water-constituent of the pulp, and, therefore, the determined proportions of solution and solids must be maintained at all times during treat-

Approximately 90% of the primary roof bolts used in CONSOL?s Pittsburgh seam coal mines is 2-piece, 8-foot long, 7/8? (or ¾?), high-strength, resin assisted, mechanical shell tensioned bolt. The remaining 10% is the 2-piece, 8-foot long, 7/8? combination bolt, which employs 4 feet of fast resin to anchor the deformed rebar at the top of the hole. In either system, a 1-3/8? hole is required to accommodate the mechanical shell and the coupler. The cheaper torque-tension rebar system, which is typically fully-grouted with 2-speed resin and which typically provides low bolt tension, is not used in CONSOL?s Pittsburgh seam mines. Rather, it is used in CONSOL?s Central Appalachia mines, where the roof rocks have CMRR rating of 50 or higher. Fully-grouted headed rebars, on the other hand, are used in CONSOL?s room-and-pillar mines. The selection of tensioned versus non-tensioned, fully-grouted bolts for coal mine primary roof support has been debated for the past thirty years. Many researches have been conducted to understand the theoretical bases behind the two systems. This paper describes CONSOL?s experience of using a new fully-grouted, mechanical shell tensioned bolt in the Pittsburgh seam with the development of low insertion force resin.

Production at Freeport Indonesia's Ertsberg open pit copper/gold mine started in 1972 at a rate of 7500 t/d. Mill throughput remained at that rate for a number of years until the discovery of the Ertsberg East (GBT) orebody. This discovery prompted three successive expansion stages from 1981 to 1988 that boosted production to 20,000 t/d. The discovery of the huge Grasberg porphyry copper deposit in 1988 launched a new era of much larger expansions. The first of these involved installation of a fourth primary mill in 1989 to bring production up to 32,000 t/d and was immediately followed by an expansion of the crushing and screening plant and the addition of a new south concentrator to bring production to 57,000 t/d in 1991. The addition of a primary ball mill and the changeout of the original Denver flotation cells in 1993 has served to optimize current production at a level of 66,000 t/d. A major expansion is now in progress. This includes construction of another new concentrator to house a SAG mill circuit and large Wemco flotation cells in an area created by the removal of 6,000,000t of glacial material. This current expansion, with a planned completion in 1995, will take production to 115,000 t/d. This paper describes the evolution of the Freeport Indonesia (FI) concentrator to-date and will then go into an in-depth discussion of the 66,000 and 115,000 t/d expansions.

This paper presents the wall stabilization design and implementation for a 541 linear ft masonry and concrete gravity-type retaining wall flanking the west perimeter of a 7.37 acre parcel in Bronx, New York. This paper will discuss the results of static and dynamic stability analyses performed for the pre- and post excavation phases for the proposed 300 ft wide open-cut of up to 14 ft of contaminated soil below the toe of the retaining wall. The wall stabilization consisted of over 74 inclined drilled and grouted anchor dowels, and 55 tiebacks drilled and grouted to the underlying mica schist bedrock. Three over-lapping rows of jet grout columns were chosen as the foundation solution for the existing retaining wall. This paper focuses on the design, construction and performance of the jet grout curtain wall. The jet grout wall served three purposes: 1) underpinning and excavation support for the removal of contaminated site soils, 2) permanent hydraulic barrier, and 3) resistance against a deep seated failure within the thick clay layer present at the site. The originally designed jet grout wall had unexpected negative effects to the existing retaining wall. The jet grouting program was modified while the Observational Method (Peck 1969) was employed to keep wall movements to a minimum. This paper discusses the diagnostic methods used to determine the cause of retaining wall movement; the implementation of a remedial ground improvement program; the modification to the jet grout installation procedure; and the ultimate performance of the jet grout wall.

Traditionally, fuel oil or diesel was the collector of choice in coal flotation, but in recent years these materials have come under increased scrutiny because of concerns about the toxicity of some components. In response to these concerns, Georgia-Pacific Chemicals LLC has commercialized a patent pending coal collector (Talon® 9400 reagent) that is 100% derived from the pulping of trees. This study presents a comparison of yields and recoveries for different coal collectors, including the one derived from the pulping of trees.

Trueman: I am not aware of any definite evidence of the temperature of formation of these minerals, but am of the opinion that high temperatures would not be present during crystallization.No evidence from the qUl'trtz, magnetite and hematite of formation temperatures is indicated and, as the carbonate is later than the other minerals it does not supply any data either.According to Miyashiro and other workers who have studied the composition and stability of the glaucophaneriebeckite series, minerals of riebeckite composition are stable over a wide range of P, T conditions. Recent work by W. G. Ernst, of the University of California, indicate that, in the presence of an Fe203/Fe304 buffer, riebeckite and crocidolite are more likely to form at low temperatures. The occurrence of riebeckite-crocidolite as authigenic minerals has been reported from several localities.Dr. MacLeod (Geol. Surv. of W. A.): Recent regional mapping by the Geological Survey of Western Australia has revealed a total thickness of at least 30,000 ft for the Proterozoic sediments in the Hamersley Basin. El desarrollo de diferentes diseños en los revestimientos del molino y parrillas de descarga, el incremento del porcentaje de bolas, las mejoras en la voladura, la reducción del set de chancadora primaria y las pequeñas ampliaciones en la planta incremetaron la capacidad de diseño de planta desde 5 Mtpa a 6 Mtpa. El incremento de tonelaje no afectó significativamente al producto de molienda y recuperación, pero traslada el cuello de botella a los espesadores donde ahora se los esfuerzos de incremento de capacidad.

The regulatory process by which governmental authorities acknowledge and, in turn, permit the location, construction, and operation of large scale energy-related facilities has become extremely detailed in recent years. One example of the detail that is entailed in the regulatory process is the number of permits that must be acquired by operators prior to the construction and operation of energy-related facilities. It has been estimated, for example, that 75 permits are required prior to the opening of a new coal mine in Pennsylvania while 50 are required in Kentucky. From the perspective of facility owners and operators the regulatory process often appears overly complex and may be perceived as a constraint to the corporate decision making process. From the perspective of those responsible for administering regulations, the process is perceived as a mans by which public desires - pursuant to social objectives such as environmental protection and occupational safety - can be achieved. As a result of conflicting organizational interests, the clash between energy facility owners and operators and their regulators appears to be inevitable. Furthermore, the resolution of this conflict lies in the tradeoff between objectives and the costs of regulation. The balance of objectives and costs is a subject of the political process and not a topic of consideration in this paper. This paper is concerned with the actual administration of regulations, that is, the implementation of that which arises from the interplay of organizational interests. The paper assumes that environmental control laws will not likely be repealed, that regulations to implement the intent of these laws are here to stay and thus the paper seeks to assess how regulations are administered at various levels of government pursuant to objectives. Environmental considerations are of increasing importance in determining the acceptability, schedule and cost of expansion ofCanada's uranium processing industry. Environmental considerations must be addressed in the early stages of facility planning. This results in a dilemma, as the process data needed to predict physical environmental impacts are not yet available from process design activities. Hence, a business risk is incurred if plant design is carried forward to meet these requirements prior to project (or site) approval. On the other hand, project scheduling normally mitigates against leaving process design engineering until such time as project approval is obtained. This paper examines the experience gained in Eldorado Nuclear's proposed expansion of refining capacity as viewed by an environmental engineering consultant. The history of the project and the relationship to process design functions in the two-year period prior to the Port Granby environmental hearings are reviewed. During the Port Granby public hearing, there was a consensus that normal operation of the proposed refinery could be successfully integrated with the site's natural environmental constraints. Moreover, the radiological impact from plant operations was demonstrated to be inconsequential. However, concerns were raised relating to plant upset and accident situations. These concerns are summarized. Process data requirements identified during the environmental hearings are discussed. Finally, the concerns for on-site burial of radioactive waste are reviewed. These concerns focussed on long-term stability of the waste in the presence ofgroundwater transport, erosion and glaciers. The AECB's position on waste management with regard to this project is reviewed in light ofthe implications for design.

Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited (OceanaGold) has commenced mining operations at the Globe-Progress mine in the Reefton Goldfield, an area that historically produced 2.1 million ounces of gold from underground quartz lode deposits. During the construction phase of the operation, advanced exploration programmes targeting near-mine prospects commenced. The focus of this ongoing exploration is the discovery of near surface, refractory gold deposits that are amenable to open-pit mining methods and treatment through the Globe-Progress process plant.   One such discovery is the Supreme deposit, located along strike approximately 3 kilometres to the south of the Globe-Progress mine. The Supreme area was tested extensively with diamond drilling in 2006, defining a deposit with similar mineralisation styles and grade to the Globe-Progress deposit. The mineralisation comprises a central core of gold-bearing quartz veins, locally containing visible gold, surrounded by a more extensive halo of refractory, disseminated gold associated with an arsenopyrite-pyrite sulphide mineral assemblage. Three subparallel mineralised structures host the mineralisation. These structures are highly oblique to the country rock orientations, extending approximately 250 metres along a northeast-southwest strike and at least 220 metres down-dip, with an average thickness of 12 metres and moderate dip to the southeast. Records of historical workings indicate that mineralisation extends further down-dip and remains open at depth. 5175 ounces of gold were mined historically at the Supreme deposit. OceanaGold have defined an Inferred Resource for the Supreme deposit of 0.84 million tonnes at 1.46 grams per tonne for a total of 40 000 ounces (at a 0.8 grams per tonne cut-off). Higher-grade zones of mineralisation exist within the deposit and further drilling is planned to test the extent, continuity and geological controls of the mineralised structures.

On 26 August 1971, the Bureau of Mines, through the Spokane Mining Research Center at Spokane, Washington, approved initiation of the evaluation of oscillatory energy toward enhancing flow of polymer into shale. The effort was an outgrowth of work performed under Bureau of Mines Contract H0210055, "Feasibility Study of Surface Impregnation equipment for the Chemical Stabilization of Coal Mine Structures," wherein feasibility of the impregnation concept was expressed and the detailed design of a machine for impregnation of coal mine roofs with polymer (under static pressure head) accomplished. Under these efforts, the potential enhance¬ment of polymer uptake into the shale thru superposition of oscillatory energy on the static impregnation pressure was suggested. A proposal for investigation of this phenomena entitled "Feasibility Study of the Application of Oscillatory Energy as an Aid to Afford Chemical Stabilization" was presented to the Bureau whereupon a three month program for initiation of investigation was approved.

Due to varying and complex mineralogy, the flotation tailings from the Chingola Concentrator have, for some years, contained upwards of 0.4% acid soluble copper. In 1968, an investigation was initiated, to determine a method for recovering this acid soluble copper. This initial investigation concluded with a recommendation to install a leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning plant at Chingola, to treat up to 900 000 tonnes of material per month, for an additional copper production of some 4 500 tonnes per month. The process consists basically of six stages :- Materials reclamation handling and preparation, acid leaching in air agitated pachucas, solid-liquid separation by countercurrent washing in thickeners, solution concentration and purification by solvent extraction, copper recovery by electrowinning, and residue neutralisation and disposal. This paper describes the development of the main parameters for design of each of the six sections, and gives details of the final plant design. Problems encountered in commissioning and initial operations are commented on, particularly insofar as they indicated any errors or misjudgements in the design. The choice of materials of construction is commented on in some detail.

Educational campaigns conducted by the manufacturers of explosives, the Bureau of Mines, mining companies, and safety organizations have contributed greatly in reducing accidents caused by explosives arid blasting. Despite these campaigns and the dissemination of information, accidents from explosives and blasting continue to be the direct cause of scores of fatalities and hundreds of nonfatal accidents annually, not only in the mineral industry but essentially wherever explosives are used. The experience of many mining companies and other users of explosives has proved that accidents from explosives can be prevented or averted by the proper training of employees in the handling and using of explosives and by the enforcement of definite rules and instructions for their use. Unfortunately, throughout the years numerous false impressions and ideas have grown up and around the use of explosives. Many of these can be traced back to the manner in which the users of explosives were originally taught, if instructed at all; and as with many types of misinformation in nearly all walks of life, those false ideas are decidedly persistent and being so cause much damage. Many if not most of the users of explosives gained their knowledge of explosives and blasting by watching others and more or less "absorbing" the procedures and thrones of the other fellow, who acted unconsciously as teacher or instructor. A study of explosives accidents reveals the results of such "teachings" when the causes of the accidents are determined, and as might be expected the results very often are far from good. Several water treatment options have been studied and piloted. A process based on activity of sulphate reducing bacteria combines sulphate removal and heavy metal removal in one process step. Hydrometallurgical recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from NiMH battery waste can be performed using sulfuric acid leaching followed by selective precipitation as double salt (REENa(SO4)2·H2O) by adding Na2SO4 as a precipitating agent. The formed double salts can then be further converted with NaOH solution to form REE hydroxides. However, present literature has paid little attention to how to minimize the consumption of reagents in this recovery process. In the current study, a process model was built using HSC Sim software, and metamodeling of the simulated flowsheet was conducted with the design of experiments (DOE), after which the basic functionality of the flowsheet was verified by experimental work, starting from sulfuric acid leaching of spent batteries. As the process is based on chemical circulation internally in the process, the objective was to investigate the accumulation of the elements in solution, specifically Na+ , K+ , SO4 2− ions and impurities liberated in the NaOH conversion step. It was found out that metamodeling could be utilized in obtaining first estimate of the process behavior, prior to any experiments. Flowsheet functionality with circulated solution was confirmed, obtaining at best 96.9% La recovery.

Mine fires have occurred since the mining of coal was begun, and they are still occurring. The resulting economic waste may become considerable (219),3 especially if a fire is allowed to assume major proportions or to get beyond control temporarily. It is important, therefore, to act promptly whenever a fire is suspected and to have every action count. To do this effectively, it is necessary to know at the earliest possible moment and thereafter what is happening in a remote or inaccessible area. It is equally important to know before¬hand what may be expected as a result of any proposed combative measure. The logical method of combatting a fire demands the cooperation of both mining engineer and chemist. They should decide the course of action to be taken, drawing upon the mining engineer's intimate knowledge of the physical structure of the fire area, the cost and time required for proposed operations, and the probable efficiency with which they could be carried out, and upon the chemist's knowledge of the results to be expected therefrom.
