To improve gold recovery from preg-robbing carbonaceous ores a technology including gravity, flotation, recleaning of the flotation concentrate, intensive cyanidation of the gravity concentrate and carbon-in-leach (CIL) process for intensive cyanidation tailings and the recleaned concentrate was developed. The final flotation tailings are shipped to tailings disposal. Total gold recovery by the proposed technology from the ore with the head grade of 0.8 g/t was 83.9%. The gold loading onto the activated carbon from CIL process was 6.5 g/kg.

Tests for the development of a metals recovery technology from samples of a Russian gold-bismuth deposit were carried out. Gold, silver and bismuth assay reported 5.6 g/t, 3.0 g/t and 0.08 per cent, respectively. Two flow sheet options were pilot plant tested: gravity/cyanidation of gravity tailings with subsequent flotation of cyanidation/carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tailings, and gravity/flotation concentration with cyanidation/CIP of concentrates. Option 1 results showed lower gold, silver and bismuth recoveries (81.3 per cent Au, 55 per cent Ag and 74.0 per cent Bi) due to low flotation efficiency for cyanidation tailings. Therefore, a flow sheet involving gravity/flotation concentration to produce bismuth-gold concentrates (0.8 per cent Bi) with subsequent cyanidation/CIP was recommended. Gold, silver and bismuth recoveries obtained by this method to the combined gravity/flotation concentrate were 90.2 per cent Au, 83.3 per cent Ag and 80.2 per cent Bi of the ore, respectively. Overall gold, silver and bismuth recoveries were 83.0 per cent Au, 40.5 per cent Ag and 80.2 per cent Bi, respectively. Gold and silver recoveries to the cathode precipitate were 92 per cent Au and 48.6 per cent Ag (per operation). Reagents consumed for flotation were 0.1 kg lead acetate/t ore, 0.4 kg butyl xanthate/t ore, 0.2 kg T-80 frother/t ore, 0.02 kg sodium hexametaphosphate/t ore, 0.15 kg copper sulfate/t ore. Reagents consumption for cyanidation was 0.42 - 0.48 kg NaCN/t ore and 0.2 kg CaO/t ore. It was recommended to deliver bismuth concentrates after hydrometallurgical treatment to a smelter. Overall bismuth recovery including bismuth recovery achieved by pyrometallurgy was 60.0 per cent. However, it was obvious that delivery of bismuth concentrates to a smelter and their commercial treatment would be very expensive due to relatively high mass pull of bismuth concentrates (7.6 per cent of the ore weight). For this reason, thiourea leaching and hydrochloric acid leaching with subsequent cyanidation/CIP were investigated as alternatives to cyanide leaching. These two alternatives were proposed to enable optimal recovery of valuable metals from concentrates on-site. Recoveries obtained by thiourea leaching were 91.2 per cent Au, 90.5 - 91.9 per cent Bi and 77.0 - 78.1 per cent Ag. However, that method required considerable capital and operating costs. As an alternative, hydrochloric acid leaching with subsequent cyanidation was investigated. Test results showed improved gold, bismuth and silver recoveries, which were 94 - 95.9 Au per cent, 94 - 96 Bi per cent and 76 - 78 Ag per cent, respectively. Hydrochloric acid consumption was 100 kg/t concentrate or 7.6 kg/t ore. Current efficiency during electrowinning was about eight to 12 per cent. A recommended flow sheet involving hydrochloric acid leaching of concentrates, electrowinning of bismuth from solutions, recycling solutions after electrowinning and cyanidation of hydrochloric acid leaching cakes is described. Overall recoveries achieved by the proposed flow sheet were as follows: 84.8 - 86.5 Au per cent, 75.8 - 76.9 Bi per cent and 63.2 - 64.9 Ag per cent. Based on results from these tests, initial data for a bankable feasibility study and plant designing were developed.

"In mid-1986, a world-class mining enterprise was created in Highland Valley, British Columbia, bringing together the copper mining operations of Lomex and Cominco . In 1988, Highmont joined the new partnership.Highland Valley Copper is the largest copper mine in North America in terms of both tonnage mined and tonnage milled, and it is one of the largest in the world. Due to its relatively low ore grade its production of copper in concentrate ranks about ninth in the Western World.The current eighteen year mine plan is based on ore reserves of 761 million tonnes. The daily milling rate is 133 000 tonnes. At the end of mine life, a total area of approximately 6500 hectares will have been disturbed. At this time, vegetation has been established on about 600 hectares and while work will be done during the operating years, it will not be until the end of mine life, about 2008, that the last half of the land can be reclaimed and revegetated.Once final reclamation has been accomplished, Highland Valley Copper will have completed its "" temporary use of the land"". In the meantime, about 1250people have had employment for about 50 000 man years, at wages ranking among the best in Canada.IntroductionTo provide and sustain our way of life, we need steel, copper, aluminum, zinc and many other minerals.To sustain mining, we must have adequate ore reserves and replacement of reserves as they are mined. Each year the search becomes more difficult as more of the Earth's surface is investigated and depo sits are mined. This calls for aggressive and sustained efforts.In British Columbia, past and present mining activities have disturbed less than one-tenth of one per cent of the land.With today’s technology, mining operations can be substantially reclaimed and thus complete the cycle of ""A Temporary Use of the Land""."

The city of Kansas City, Missouri, is replacing its original airport, con- structed in 1972 as a "drive-to-the- gate" facility, with a modern, single- terminal facility with just over 1 million sq ft (92,903 sq m) in area along with an adjacent 6,300-space parking structure. It is the largest infrastructure project in the city's history. The project team designed and oversaw the installation of 12-24 in (305-610 mm) diameter augered cast- in-place (ACIP) piles to a range of depths with the pile toes located in underlying alluvial clay, weathered shale or on intact limestone, depending on the required loads at each column location. The specific ACIP piles used were auger pressure grouted (APG) piles. Additional information regarding the ACIP pile installation process can be found in the Augered Cast-in-Place Pile Manual, Third Edition (2016) prepared by the DFI Augered Cast-in-Place and Drilled Displacement Pile Committee. This article includes a summary of the subsurface conditions, the foundation support requirements, the extensive performance test program - started before production installation but not completed until well into production phase of the project - and the resulting production pile installation require- ments. The approach resulted in about $700,000 in foundation program savings to the city. The reduced con- struction time of about 10% less than originally estimated also added to the overall savings beyond the direct foundation savings.

An advanced laboratory-scale weathering apparatus has been developed at McGill University to study the effects of weathering (ambient temperature oxidation) on the self-heating of sulphides. Previous work by the authors has shown that the problematic self-heating of sulphides is inherently linked to the degree of oxidation (weathering) of the minerals: un-oxidized active sulphides exhibit little or no self-heating while the same material when weathered can generate extensive self-heating bringing temperatures well above 100 0C. In this study the effects of environmental conditions (weathering time, ambient temperature, sample moisture, relative humidity, and oxygen content) were evaluated with respect to the self-heating response of a pentlandite-pyrrhotite nickel sulphide concentrate.

THE present investigation has three principal purposes: I. To develop a method for measuring hydrogen embrittlement that avoids certain errors complicating previously used methods. 2. To explore in a preliminary way some of the fundamental factors controlling embrittlement. 3. To apply the measurements specifically to stainless grades of steel, whose sensitivity or insensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement has never been clearly defined. SELECTING A TEST METHOD Hydrogen embrittlement is a condition of low ductility resulting from excessive absorption of hydrogen by the steel at some period in its history, and may be revealed by almost any test involving cold deformation. Tensile tests, impact tests, and bend tests are commonly used for detecting hydrogen embrittlement; although numerous other tests, such as cold-upsetting or extrusion, could be used. The simplicity of using a wire specimen for cathodic and acid pickling tests, and the especial adaptability of the bend test to wire specimens, led to selection of the bend test for the present research. Bend tests usually have been of three general types: (I) fatigue, (2) reversed bend, and (3) single bend. The first two types, though widely used, are inaccurate because their measurements are counteracted by an aging effect; and the third type has not been developed to its fullest utility. The effect of cold-working in removing hydrogen is well known. During a bend test hydrogen can be observed escaping from the convex side simply by coating the specimen with oil; and any technique employing flexing or reverse bending may therefore have its measurements masked because the mechanical action reduces the embrittlement during the test. This factor is so important that even elastic flexing of a hydrogen-charged wire specimen should be avoided before testing if accurate measurements are desired. DEVELOPING A MACHINE FOR MEASURING HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT As for the single-bend test, its theory is good, and recovery caused by mechanical work is kept to a minimum. With a given degree of hydrogen embrittlement, a specimen will break at a given angle if the bending is applied unidirectionally and uniformly. The radius of the bend must be kept constant; and the rate of bending should be a constant, slow enough to allow reading of the breaking angle, and yet rapid enough to prevent significant recovery from the escape of hydrogen during bending. PAULY, Schenectady, N. Y.-I have seen this installation and I wish all those interested in the question of electricity as a mine pumping agent could see it. It is not only a model for mine installation, but might well serve as a model for any electrically driven pumping plant. I think I am correct in saying that the pumps are the largest electrically operated centrifugal pumps in mine service in America. I talked with Mr. Rumsey in Duluth just before coming here, and he told me that the actual tests of the equipment as installed checked very closely with the shop tests; that the water delivered by the pumps was slightly in excess of the guarantee, something like 3 or 4 per cent., and that no troubles except of a very minor nature had been experienced with the installation from the start. One point which has been brought out by Mr. Rumsey, and by others who have looked into this question, is the marked saving which' can be made by the application of electricity to pumps, especially to the main sump pumps. The pumps are always located a long distance from the boiler plant and the losses in the steam mains are large. While many of the steam pumps are of a very high grade, yet the tests seemed to indicate that the steam consumption is extremely large. The reduction in operating cost of one small installation which I. have in mind pumping against a head of approximately 2,000 ft.-which by the way was a reciprocating pump-reduced the pumping cost to the neighborhood of one-fifth of the previous steam cost. . The high steam cost was probably due to leakage in the engine and the loss in transmission in the mine, the pumps being located almost half a, mile from the boiler plant.

Introduction IN order to realize the economies which would result in operating the mine pumps at the Chapin mine with electricity. generated by water power, the Oliver Iron Mining Co. recently installed a hydro-electric plant at the upper Quinnesee, falls on the Menominee river, and constructed a transmission line to the mine. On account of the large flow of water in the Chapin mine, and the great depth from which it has to be handled, it was necessary to make a thorough investigation of the merits of both the motor-driven centrifugal and motor-driven plunger pumps, in order that the most economical results as regards power, cost of installation, maintenance, and operation, be obtained. This investigation resulted in the selection of motor-driven centrifugal pumps, as the cost of the pumps and motors, installation, and maintenance was considerably lower, and the space required in the underground workings very much smaller, than for the plunger pumps. The overall efficiencies guaranteed by several of the centrifugal-pump manufacturers were so nearly those guaranteed by plunger-pump manufacturers that the saving in power which would result from the installation of plunger pumps did not justify their increased first cost and the increased cost of installation under the conditions prevailing at the Chapin nine. In order to substantiate the representations of the centrifugal-pump builders it was deemed necessary to insist upon a factory test of the completed units before shipment, the test to be conducted under conditions of head and capacity approximating as nearly as possible those under which the pumps would operate in service. Furthermore, it was considered necessary to demonstrate, by test, that there were no deficiencies in design or capacity of the pumps or motors before their final installation in the mine, as it would be extremely difficult to make alterations in the pumps or motors after they were installed.

The variogram is the function used to express the intercorrelation of a regionalized variable. It is used to quantify, for example, the natural variability of mineralization and in that sense may be thought of a average disimilarity between metal quantity at two points inside a deposit.2 As David2 explains, appropriate mathematical functions of distance and direction are used to characterize variograms, a process that he says is analogous to selecting a normal or lognormal model for an observed distribution. Methods for choosing a model for the underlying variogram of a random function based on the sample data appear in the literature.3,8 A crossvalidation procedure is available to check the validity of the model.3 However, statistical validation of the choice of the model through the mechanism of hypothesis testing is not presently available. In the section to follow, notation and background material is presented upon which a large sample test procedure will be constructed. The stationarity assumptions presented refer to covariance stationarity. A test procedure is then proposed, and an example is given for the case of the one dimensional random process.

Research efforts by the U.S. Bureau of Mines include running a series of displacement-discontinuity, boundary-element models to simulate the gateroad design at an underground coal mine in northwestern Colorado. The initial mine design is a yield-abutment chain pillar arrangement in a three-entry, longwall gateroad system. Pressure effects from mining the first and second panel were recorded using borehole pressure cells (BPCs). These field data were then compared directly to the model output. Observed yielding in the field was approximated by reducing material property values and/or removing pillar elements in the model. Model results using this calibration technique mirrored the field measurements consistently. Using the calibrated model parameters, a suite of models was run simulating an experimental entry design: exchanging the yield and abutment pillar locations. These model results reflect a 20¬to 33-percent reduction in core stresses in the yield pillar during mining of the second panel. Improved pillar and entry conditions are suggested by these predictive results. The design modifications were then implemented at the mine along a 150-m (500-ft) test section. Field observations and measurements from the experimental design test site compared favorably with trends of the model predictions.

"The localized uniform conditioning (LUC) technique was proposed by Marat Abzalov in 2006. The technique converts conventional uniform conditioning (UC) grade-tonnage curves into single grade values attached to each smallest mining unit (SMU). This is achieved by ranking the SMUs within a panel in increasing order of their grade (based on the direct kriging of SMUs). This ranking is then used to localize the conventional UC grade-tonnage curves for each panel by dividing them into classes and computing their mean grades, which are assigned to the SMUs. The quality of this localization process will depend heavily on the validity of the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs. Abzalov noted that where the distribution of data available for the direct kriging of the SMU is characterized by strong short-range variability, the advantages of using the LUC approach may be more limited. Consequently, a study was undertaken to determine how valid the predicted grade patterns of a typical Birimian-style gold deposit (with high nugget effect and strong short-range variability) might be expected to be. This was determined by comparing the direct SMU kriging ranking (based on sparse data) with the grade control model ranking (based on close-spaced data and the best available estimate of the deposit). The results showed a satisfactory correlation between these rankings and it was concluded that, although the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs may be less meaningful for deposits exhibiting strong short-range continuity, there is nevertheless a convincing relationship with the actual (or best available) rankings. Therefore, the LUC technique is still considered to be useful for this style of deposit. IntroductionFor adequate technical and financial evaluation of a project, attempts should be made to estimate the recoverable resources – the portion of the in situ resource that can be economically extracted by mining. To achieve this, the estimates of the tonnage and grade of the mineralization should be produced above a given economic cut-off and should take into consideration the proposed mining selectivity."

Two methods of Monte-Carlo simulations, one suggested by Matheron (1972) and the other by Rudenno (1983), have been tested for simulating coal deposits. To do this 2160 values of ash percentages were simulated using 60 known data points in a two dimensional grid, 20 m x 40 m. 1L is found that while both methods conserve the mean of the known distribution in the results of the simulations, only the first method reproduces the spatial covariance (i.e. the variogram), of the experimental data. The results show that for simulation of regionalized variables only the first method tested yields the desired results.

A test has been devised that can predict accurately the % crystallinity developed in a slag film formed between the steel strand and the mould. The % crystallinity in the test samples was determined and compared with that for slag films formed in the mould when casting with that flux. There was good agreement between the % crystallinity in the test samples and the slag films. It was found that additions of TiO2and ZrO2had little effect on the amount of crystalline phase formed, but additions of CaO caused a dramatic increase in the amount of crystalline phase formed. Various parameters (which can be calculated from chemical composition of the flux) have been plotted against % crystallinty in the test samples. It was found that the modified (NBO/T) ratio provided the best relation with % crystallinity for the various parameters tested. There commended relation is % crystallinity=141.1(NBO/T)-284.0. "The ability to optimise a concentrator from mill feed to final products requires a process simulator that integrates comminution, classification and separation stages. A key part of any such integrated process simulator is the inclusion of a model of mineral liberation in comminution to predict the particle composition distribution of the comminution products. This need was recognised by Gaudin (1939) who proposed a model of liberation based on the cubic fracture of a mineral texture composed of cubic grains of two minerals.This paper describes the development of a texture-based model of mineral liberation that builds on the method proposed by Gaudin. The approach described here, termed the JK-Gaudin Random Liberation model (JK-GRLM) uses as its basis the measured, volumetric mineral texture data that can be quantified for a given ore using X-ray micro-tomography. The textural data required as inputs for the JK-GRLM include the mineral grain size distribution. While the Gaudin model (in common with other existing liberation models) is a two-mineral (or two-phase) system, the JK-GRLM extends the approach to multimineral systems of up to 15 individual minerals, making it more widely applicable.An example of the application of the JK-GRLM to a base metal sulphide ore is provided. In the example the JK-GRLM is used to simulate the breakage of the measured ore texture and the particle composition distributions of the simulated progeny particles are compared to the measured particle composition distributions of ore that has been physically broken.The ability to calibrate this mineral liberation model with measured ore texture will allow it to be applied in greenfield situations where geometallurgical programs measure texture and in brownfield applications as a key part of integrated process simulations. The development of this model enhances our ability to simulate mineral processing operations as an integrated system."

"Following the depletion of nickel sulfide ores, laterites are considered as one of the main sources for producing nickel and cobalt. One of the primary steps in pyrometallurgical extraction of nickel from laterites involves partial reduction of the ore at temperatures below 1000°C. Studying the kinetics of laterite reduction provides valuable information on reducibility of nickel laterites using coal as a reductant. The present study investigates the reduction behavior of a nickel laterite by thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Non-isothermal reduction tests and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed to find the main reactions that occur during the process. The kinetic parameters were calculated by Coats-Redfern method. The general model of simple reaction f(a)=(1-a)n was used for calculating kinetic parameters.INTRODUCTION Nickel (Ni) naturally occurs in the form of sulfide and laterite ores. Laterite ores are mainly available in tropical regions. Weathering phenomena during millions of years has led to the formation of several layers with specific mineralogy (Butt & Cluzel, 2013). The three main layers downward are limonite, smectite, and saprolite (Crundwell et al., 2011). Although laterites are the most available nickel ore resource (70%), their share in the overall Ni production is limited to 40% (Crundwell et al., 2011). The main reasons for not materializing the full potential of laterites are as follows (Ray et al., 1985): •,Laterite ores contain high water content (free and combined) which in turn results in high energy consumption of the extraction process. •,As Ni is present in the form of solid solution in laterites, physical upgrading methods such as flotation are not effective in increasing the Ni content before the extraction process. •,Extracting Ni from sulfide ores involve exothermic reactions which are beneficial due to decreasing the overall energy requirement of the process, however there is not efficient release of energy in the process of extracting Ni from laterite ores."

When underground openings are excavated in rock mass for storage of Liquefied Natural Gas, hereinafter referred to as L.N.G., as its temperature is -162o C, steep temperature gradients and thermal stress occur around the openings. That is, the plastic zone and cracks around openings will expand with time. In this paper, the range of cracks which were obtained by the Crack Analysis Method and the range of the plastic zone which was obtained by the No Tension Analysis Method were investigated and compared.

A THEORETICAL consideration of the mechanics of various water-flooding systems with the viewpoint of comparing their relative merits involves the study of two fundamental properties of such systems. On the one hand, it is important to determine the efficiency of the flood as measured by the percentage of the total area that is swept out by the encroaching water before water actually reaches the output wells. This is really a measure of the regional tendency of the water to "bypass" the oil. On the other hand, the various systems must be compared from the viewpoint of their resistances which determine the rate of fluid production obtainable for given pressures maintained at the water input wells. The first of these questions has been studied and very definite answers have been obtained by means of simple electrolytic models.1 These models showed that, in an ideal system, the percentages of the areas flooded out before water reaches the output wells are about 57 per cent for the direct line-drive flood (the input and output wells being equally spaced and placed in alternate parallel lines), 74 per cent for the regular five-spot network, and 79 per cent for the seven-spot network. With respect to the efficiency of the usual flooding arrangements, they are, therefore, given quite accurately by the above numbers. With regard to the resistances of the flooding networks, electrical conduction models have also been used successfully2 and are well adapted to the problem of determining experimentally the pressure distribution and streamlines, or over-all resistances of specific flooding networks. However, such models do not permit readily a study of the effect of changing dimensions or configuration within a network, since a new model must be made up for each set of dimensions considered.

Introduction Troublesome shales have plagued the petroleum industry for more than 50 years. Unstable boreholes have been experienced when drilled into shale formations; sane have been studied almost at the beginning of rotary drilling. A little progress has been made since then, but much is still to be learned. No simple solution exists so far, but good drilling practices combined with good mud practices have been helpful. It is well known that shales in general have a strong affinity for water, and when water is adsorbed, the stability of the shale section of a well is reduced; cohesive strength will be re- bed, properties will be altered and shale will generally expand and/or crumble. The amount of water a shale will adsorb depends on the characteristics of its clay mineral and the ionic concentration of surrounding fluid. Fluid loss and the resulting hydration of an unstable formation can lead to serious downhole problems. The rate of fluid loss depends greatly on the permeability of the deposited cake. In impermeable formations, however, there is no loss of fluid into the formation. As such, shale, because of its very low porosity and almost no permeability, could be termed impermeable. Yet there is strong evidence that shale surfaces are wetted by an invasion of fluid into the formation through microfractures and jointed planes. It is this wetting that causes the shales to swell and slough into the hole, resulting in problems such as increased mud volume and treating costs, bridges and fill-up, stuck pipe, overgauge hole, poor cement jobs and increased cement requirements, and logging and completion difficulties. Drilling operations have been defeated by severe shale problems, resulting in & hole being plugged and abandoned after several weeks of drilling. Shales are we1l known as being difficult and costly to drill. Numerous fishing jobs have plagued drilling operations, and the cost of reaming tight holes ad weighting up the drilling mud to control shale sloughing has been high. The concept of controlling water loss to stop sloughing was introduced in the 1920's. It was known-then that calcium in fresh water re- strains clay £ran excessive swelling (theory of osmosis) . This reinforced the belief that calcium-based muds such as lime, gypsum and calcium chloride should minimize hydration of clays. Lime muds were then introduced for this purpose and others in the 1930-1940 decade1. They were used for shale inhibition but were not effective. In an attempt to improve them, a special calcium-type mud beam popular during the 1950's. Hole enlargement continued and they too were considered ineffective. During & early 1960qs, papers were published claiming that shale swelling could be prevented by using high concentrations of chemical thinner called Chrane Lignosulfonate1. This began the era of highly treated lignosulfote muds. Unfortunately, the hole enlargement problem continued. During & mid-1960’s, oil based muds were used for the purpose of inhibition of shales. Not until 1966 did Mondshine2 suggest that the water phase be saturated with calcium chloride. The cost of using oil based mud was considered by most operators not worth the additional hole stability. The potassium chloride-polymer muds were also used in many fields in the United States and western Canada. The use of these muds has been claimed to prevent clay swelling by inhibition and encapsulation in sane areas of western Canada. They are also expensive and their ueneral application is still experimental. To reduce filtrate loss when sloughing shale becomes a problem during drilling is a reasonable practice. This study will investigate the use of cationic organic additives to mud to form a protective barrier between the shale - which are primarily composed of clays - and water that will keep water from entering the microfractures and will also prevent them from hydrating. In so doing, an understanding of modern clay chemistry and & dispersive properties of cationic additives in water based systems will be our most valuable tools. This study will also present and solve a mathematical model for simulating cation transport phenomena in fractured shales using the Framdlich equilibrium adsorption isotherm. The studies will analyze wellbore failure and stability as affected by cationic organic material.
