With 13.7km of TBM tunneling in Atlanta’s hard gneiss well under way, drill and shoot work continues on several sites throughout the city. In order for the City of Atlanta to meet the consent decree imposed by the federal government, an aggressive construction schedule was a necessity. Construction consists of two deep, large diameter tunnels, four construction shafts, a pumping station, one overflow shaft, three large intake structures, and two connecting tunnels. Due to the multitude of blasting insensitive urban environments, a high standard of seismic and air-overpressure criteria, coupled with time restrictions, was adopted for the project. At any given time, drill and blast operations were under way at four of the seven sites requiring a certain amount of coordination between the TBM excavation, surface work, and the forces of Mother Nature. This paper addresses the challenges faced and the techniques used to safely and successfully complete the rock excavation of the West Area CSO Tunnel and Pumping Station project.

Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

Due to the transport mechanics of the depositional environment, glacial soils display a very wide range of grain sizes and behavior. Several nonstandard drilling, sampling, and analytical techniques are therefore required to characterize the subsurface. The paper summarizes the geotechnical investigation for the design of a large project in glacial geology, which will include both large and small diameter pressure balance tunneling. The paper focuses on the challenges presented by the glacial environment and the techniques required to identify and characterize it for design and contract document preparation.

"This project analyzed the efficiency of incorporating the use of directional drilling technology into coal overburden blasting. Directional drilling is currently in use in the petroleum industry and it is believed that it will be a valuable asset in the mining industry. This project has shown that directional drilling can be a viable technology for use in the coal overburden removal process resulting in increased drill utilization and potential for cost savings. Future work regarding blasting and geotechnical evaluation should be performed to solidify the concept. INTRODUCTION Determine the Potential Drill Utilization Improvements and Rock Fragmentation Requirements Using Directional Drilling in a Coal Mining Overburden Highwall Application was a project funded by Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions (Atlas Copco) based in Garland, Texas. The project was developed and researched by Montana Tech of the University of Montana. This project was intended to show how the use of directional drilling can increase drill utilization, while decreasing costs, without sacrificing overburden blasting results. This paper discusses a review of the literature, the methods performed, conclusions and future work Background Atlas Copco theorized that an alternative approach to drilling a cast blast pattern would be beneficial to coal mining operations by increasing drill utilization and therefore, decreasing overall costs. Increasing drill utilization results in an increase in the amount of time the drill is being productive, more drill bit time in ground. Atlas Copco’s theory is that by incorporating directional drilling in the design of a cast blast pattern, a drill rig could drill multiple directional holes, which are the length of the cast blast, from a single drill set up. A drill goes through a series of steps to complete a blast pattern, these steps include: tramming to the hole location, leveling the drill, drilling the hole, cleaning the hole, and retracting the drill steel. This process is repeated hundreds of times until the whole pattern is completed. The most time intensive part of this process is drilling out the blast pattern. Integrating directional drilling into this process could decrease the overall time it takes to drill out a blast pattern by minimizing the amount of time spent tramming and setting up for each subsequent hole. Tramming and drill set up are two aspects of the drilling process where the drill tool is not engaged with the ground and, therefore, not being utilized. A cast blast pattern designed to utilize directional drilling will allow the drill tool to be “in the hole” longer and will improve drill utilization. This change in drill utilization was analyzed. Drilling and blasting is an integral part of the mining process, without it mining would be a slower process and less material could be mined. Drilling provides holes for explosives to be loaded and then blasted. Blasting has been found to be the most cost effective method of fracturing rock in mining for material removal. Blasting is also used as a low-cost method to move the rock in open cast mines, commonly referred to as cast blasting. A cast blast is a large blast designed to allow for the maximum amount of overburden to be removed using explosives in a single blast thereby uncovering more coal at a lower cost. Not all the material is blasted to cast-to-final, which requires that material to be moved with large mining machinery. Material that is considered cast-to-final is material that has been thrown far enough to never be moved again in the coal extraction process, therefore it is in its final resting place. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), and the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (Alameda CMA) are involved in a unique partnership on the planning and design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, located on State Route 24 in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The project will add a two-lane bore north of the existing three bores. The project will alleviate traffic congestion in the non-peak direction. This paper provides background on the existing facility, summarizes the need for the new fourth bore, describes the proposed improvements, sets forth the approach for project delivery, and lists some of the challenges that are expected during construction.

Computer simulation and mineral modeling was applied to the optimization of a grinding circuit in a plant processing 256 t/h magnetite. These tools were used to develop a grinding and classification configuration to decrease the grade of silica in the magnetite concentrate, which is produced by the plant. Empirical grinding and classification models were finely tuned using plant experimental data. The JKSimMetTM 5.0 software was used to simulate the grinding and classification units. By applying changes in the original circuit, a throughput increment of 100% was achieved with an important reduction in the energy consumption. The silica content in the magnetite concentrate can be decreased by regrinding the coarse fraction of fine screens into a separate ultrafine grinding unit instead of returning this flow to the ball grinding mills.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry. Surface and underground limestone is one commodity recently surveyed. The sound levels of mining and processing equipment were recorded to identify noise sources. Full-shift worker noise exposures were completed to determine the exposure of various occupations. This paper presents the results of the noise research conducted in both underground and surface limestone mines, detailing the equipment likely to cause worker overexposures, and the occupations experiencing overexposures. Implications for worker noise exposure reduction are also reported.

Respirable crystalline silica poses a significant health risk, with the American Lung Association estimating that 2.3 million workers are exposed to silica in the workplace. This includes mine workers as well as those in many other industries. Reducing dust formation is sometimes not possible so other methods to reduce exposure are critical. These methods include the use of surfactants to reduce airborne dust particles. However, it is the proper selection and application of surfactants that leads to reduced dust exposure. A discussion of how surfactants work, especially for silica dust, leads to guidance for surfactant selection followed by a review of technologies for their application.

INTRODUCTION Gas hydrates have considerable potential to be a major energy resource owing to their apparent abundance in Arctic regions and along continental margins throughout the world (Kvenvolden, 1988). Yet, the oil and gas industry has been slow to pursue this opportunity. The primary reasons for this are the large conventional reserve base for natural gas worldwide and the perception that gas hydrate will not be a viable resource for another twenty or thirty years. Gas hydrates are thus viewed as a potential resource for the distant future, but not a valid investment for the near term. This paper addresses both global gas markets and gas hydrate technology, and shows that the commercial development of gas hydrate could proceed rapidly enough to constitute a near-term energy resource. GLOBAL GAS MARKETS The proven worldwide reserves of conventional natural gas are truly enormous, totaling over 6,000 TCF according to BP (2004). Moreover, those reserves have nearly doubled during the past two decades and now represent 67 years of consumption at the current production rates of 80 TCF per year (Fig. 1). This reserve increase has occurred even as global production of natural gas has increased by 67% during the same two decades (Fig. 2). While declining conventional gas reserves are a concern in North America, especially in regions where established infrastructure exists to bring gas to consumers, large new discoveries continue to be made elsewhere in the world. Indeed, in many parts of the world (such as the Middle East and parts of West Africa), natural gas has been regarded as an essentially worthless byproduct of oil production or exists in stranded gas fields. Given this situation, pursuing unconventional gas resources that are inherently riskier exploration targets and more expensive to produce would appear to have little rationale from a business standpoint.

Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today's mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors' mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine's use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine's use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine's use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. A section of the largest Superfund site in the country has become a success story for engineering innovation and for cooperative problem solving. “Superfund site” and “success story” are phrases that are not commonly found in the same sentence. Yet, their use seems justified. The project’s certification of construction completion from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes a commendation. It reads, “for completing the project nearly a year ahead of schedule, at a cost substantially less than estimated originally and without com-promising the requirements for protection of human health and safety or the environment.” The EPA director who issued that certification also referred to the project as “a positive example of cooperation among all who have a stake in the outcome.”

Draglines are the main energy consumers in strip mines. Given the growing cost of energy and environmental concerns, it is important to properly understand dragline energy efficiency. The goal of current research at Missouri University of Science & Technology is to account for operator practice and operating conditions in modeling dragline energy efficiency. This paper presents preliminary correlation analysis and a framework for stochastic modeling of dragline energy efficiency. Thirteen operating parameters (including cycle times, payload, swing angle, and height of dump pile), operator working schedules, operating conditions, and drag, hoist, and swing energies were monitored for an 85 yd3 dragline. Operator effects were examined by two-sample t-tests. The relation between the parameters and energy consumption were assessed by correlation analysis and a stochastic modeling framework has been proposed for dragline energy efficiency. The results show that operator effects are significant (p< 0.05) and energy efficiency is correlated with operating parameters. The completed model will help the coal mines better predict energy consumption, with uncertainty, for different operating conditions.

The authors of this paper have a combined construction experience of 70 years. They have served as engineers and managers on projects throughout the United States and Canada. Approximately 50 shafts have been sunk under their direct and daily participation. Several shafts have been selected from each of their experiences and have been briefly summarized here. SHALLOW SHAFT SINKING Sinking shallow shafts in highly urbanized areas adds an additional set of problems to those encountered in normal sinking operations. During the time between July, 1975 and early 1981, a series of shafts were sunk for The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority. All of these were located along the "A" line, starting soon after the route departed from its path along Connecticut Avenue, proceeding to Wisconsin Avenue and then along Wisconsin Avenue to the city line at Western Avenue. (See WMATA System Map, Figure 1) The first three shafts were subcontracted from Morrison-Knudsen & Associates, Contract A9a, in July, 1975. The United States Antarctic Program (USAP), through its principal support contractor Raytheon Polar Services Co. (RPSC), has recently completed a three-year project comprising nearly 936 m (3,071 ft) of undersnow utility tunnels at Amundsen-Scott Station, South Pole, Antarctica. The tunnel serves the new station facilities that are currently under construction. It houses the piping that conveys fresh water from current and future water well sites, as well as waste water to repositories in abandoned wells. The undersnow tunnels permit year-round access for system operations and maintenance. The network of tunnels is entirely unlined and unsupported. And, for the most part, it maintains a rectangular cross section of 1.8-m-wide x 3-m-high (6 x 10 ft).The tunnel runs from 6 to 14 m (18 to 45 ft) below the surface. Eight 1-m- (3.3-ft-) diam raises bored from the surface serve the network as emergency escapeways.

Many years ago, a relationship was established between dust inhalation and pneumoconiosis. Since then, various government agencies have regulated crystalline and amorphous forms of silica material in the workplace. In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen. With this listing, crystalline silica became a regulated substance under the Hazard Communication Standard. The minerals and chemicals industries have responded in various ways. They have: • developed worker and user training programs and literature; • labeled products with appropriate warnings; • continued to implement dust reduction programs; and • developed meaningful epidemiological studies of workers. • begun development of reliable analytical methods for measuring crystalline silica at the 0.1 % threshold level; Background Silicosis historically has been the major health hazard resulting from exposure to crystalline silica. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for more than 2000 years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery that increased dust levels. Subsequently, the need for dust control was recognized and measures were instituted. Silicosis is characterized by progressive breathlessness on exertion and develops over the course of years. Introduction Shale Mining Problems The mining problems an oil shale operator will face are largely determined by the process. Candidate oil recovery processes are surface (above ground processing of mined oil shale), modified in situ (underground with some shale removed), and true in situ (completely underground with no shale removed). The shale removed for modified in situ (MIS) is generally processed by surface techniques. The mining problems are different for each category. Fig. 1 depicts the diversity of western shale deposits. Mining for surface operations will employ underground mining techniques in common use but the scale will be larger. A typical oil shale operation is expected to require 75,000 to 250,000 st (68 000 to 226 800 tons) a stream day of crushed oil shale. This is above the upper limit of current mining operations. Major problems include: (1) lack of good engineering design properties for oil shale, especially when interbedded with saline minerals at depths below 1,000 ft (305 m); (2) presence of water, hydrogen sulfide, and methane in some areas; (3) necessity for mine disposal of as much retorted oil shale waste as possible; and (4) control of environmental impacts of mining. Portions of the oil shale deposits in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah and significant portions of the Devonian shales in the eastern U.S. are adapted to surface mining. No major technological problems are apparent outside overburden thicknesses up to 1,000 ft in the West. However, numerous political and environmental difficulties have arisen. One major oil shale developer cancelled a planned surface mining operation and currently is pursuing a modified in-situ plan. The eastern shales are closer to the surface than the western, but suffer from many of the same environmental and political problems. Modified in-situ operations face much more severe mining problems than surface efforts. Because the mined stope (called an in-situ "retort" by processors) acts as a retorting process vessel subject to gas flow, combustion, and temperatures between 1,500° and 2,000°F, mining is under highly restrictive limitations. This processing method involves removing between 20 and 40% of the shale deposit and then blasting the roof and walls into the mined space, where the oil is recovered by retorting. Major problems are: (1) swell factor severely limited; (2) need for consistent size distribution of blasted shale; (3) even filling of stope (in-situ retort) by blasted shale with consistent permeability throughout; (4) scaleup of blasting techniques, after optimization; (5) protection of retort pillars and roof during and after retorting; (6) prevention of groundwater percolation; (7)use of ANFO explosive in wet holes; (8) disposing of surface-retorted shale waste in stope; and (9) restoration of site. "Bridgestone Americas opened the company’s first U.S.-based giant off-road radial (ORR) tire plant in November. The 139,000-m2 (1.5 -million-sq ft) plant, located on a 222-ha (550- acre) site in Aiken County, SC, will produce radial tire products, including 157-cm (63-in.) tires, used on mining and aggregate haul trucks.The plant, announced in 2011 as a $970-million investment, represents the largest investment that Bridgestone has made in the United States, and is also the single largest investment ever made in South Carolina. Although it had already been producing tires for a few months, the plant officially opened with a ceremony in November 2014, attended by South Carolina federal, state and local elected officials, as well as Bridgestone personnel from the United States and Japan. Prior to the Aiken County plant’s construction, all of Bridgestone’s giant ORR tires were manufactured at its Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu facilities in Japan.Kurt Danielson, president of Bridgestone’s U.S. & Canada Commercial Group, said the facility was built to primarily serve the North American mining and aggregate industries in a more efficient manner. "It’s a real change for us," he said of the U.S.-based plant at its opening ceremony. "This allows us to have a true global presence."The Aiken County plant is intended to allow Bridgestone to meet customer demand for ORR tires, Danielson said. "It really frees up our other plants in Japan to service the rest of the world, allowing us to serve our customers faster," Danielson said. "As soon as we build (a tire), we can have it to our customers."Tires manufactured at Bridgestone’s Japanese plants could spend up to a month in transit to the American continents; from initial mixing of the rubber and other compounds to being warehoused, tires manufactured at the Aiken County plant can be ready to ship in four to five days.Danielson said most of the tires built in Aiken County will be used by customers on the American continents. "We will export," he said, "but our desire is to use as much capacity as we can for the Americas."Ground was broken for the facility inSeptember 2011, when commodity prices were much different than today and global demand for tires had skyrocketed."
