It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter con-tents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal's self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal's propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model's ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal three important factors affecting the coal's self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

Since the start of mining operations at White Pine in 1953, over 22 miles of drifts have been driven for the purpose of developing the ore body. The drifts, normally driven in multiples of three or five headings, serve as conveyor belt routes, ventilation ducts, equipment and haulage roads, and initial access to mining blocks. Development openings in the flat-lying, bedded ore body are driven in rectangular section from 16 to 32 feet wide and from 8. 5 to 16 feet high. The floor level normally coincides with the bottom limit of the chalcocite values and the roof or back is carried at the most competent stratum adjacent to the top of the ore. A development front consisting of five headings and associated crosscuts is advanced at an average rate of about 100 feet per month using conventional drill and blast techniques and equipment. The cyclic nature of the functions involved in driving the openings and the need to include them in production schedules preclude significant improvements in advance rates using current drill, blast, muck, and haul sequencing.

Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is a software and data communication system developed at the University of Alabama. This system integrates real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis and forecasting of forthcoming events. The main objective of this system is to provide stability information on longwall panels including excessive shield load, low setting pressure, leg leakage and poor shield performance, eminent maintenance problems, etc. Analyses of various mining and geological parameters were also performed to determine past and present roof characteristics and to forecast roof loading patterns for the following mining cycles, next periodic weighting, etc. A local coal mine in the Warrior Coal Basin has adopted this system to provide daily evaluation of ground stability and maintenance problems of their longwall panels. Two years of experience with this system is covered in this paper.

In January of 1966, during the annual session of Georgia's General Assembly, Representative Paul E. Nessmith of Statesboro, Georgia, walked into my office and asked me what I thought of the advisability and feasibility of a law which would require the mining operators to reclaim their mined out lands. My answer to him was, as a one time mine superintendent and operator, that I probably would not think very highly of the added cost which reclamation would impose on the operation; but that since assuming the job of Chief Geologist and Assistant Director of the Georgia Department of Mines, Mining and Geology, and in retrospect, I could recommend it very highly, particularly in view of the increased pressure being applied by the Federal government along these lines. I stated then and still emphatically state that this sort of administration should be done on the State level rather than the Federal level. He asked me if I would conduct him on a tour through some of the mining country in which I had worked and to this I readily agreed. The result of this trip was that he was adversely impressed by the devastation which the mining operations had wreaked on that area of middle Georgia along the fall line known as the kaolin belt. Very little except talk was done for the remainder of 1966.

This paper discusses the challenges to complete the construction of two large underground Metro stations and connecting tunnels in the Tren Urbano system. The completion work includes the installation of specialized mechanical and electrical systems, extensive architectural finishing as well as coordination with systemwide power and controls installed by others. A unique feature of this project was the simultaneous design and construction of the structural/civil/architectural/mechanical/electrical works by KKZ separately from the power and control systems under the management of the Owner, its consultants and other contractors. Completion of this project comes after almost six years of continuous design and construction in a dense urban environment. The project was confronted by many challenges that could only be met with the combined efforts of the Joint Venture team in close cooperation with the Owner and its System wide Contractor. This paper will also address many of the major design and construction changes implemented to suit the Owner’s requirements.

State and federal regulations require that surface mine overburden be investigated in advance of mining for naturally occurring earth materials that are detrimental to animal and plant life or to uses of water. Proper identification of these toxic materials is necessary to permit development of environmentally sound reclamation programs. Intensified use of present laboratory methods to meet anticipated testing demands would be both costly and time consuming. This paper discusses the desirability of and general requirements for a geophysical system capable of locating toxic zones in the overburden of surface mineable lands of the Northern Great Plains Coal Province. The paper (1) identifies the types and character of naturally occurring overburden substances that must be investigated in advance of mining, (2) discusses the economic justification for development of a geophysical system to replace or to complement conventional laboratory test methods, and (3) discusses the potential applicability of downhole geophysical methods to overburden analysis.

The ventilation of a mine is one of the key elements to a successful mining operation. It is, or should be, one of the primary concerns of the mining engineer at an underground mine. Too frequently, however, insufficient thought is given to future requirements. As a result, the mines suddenly find themselves with ventilation problems that cannot be corrected economically, or in short order, and have to suffer the consequences of being on the verge of having units shut down from time to time until the venlilaltion system can be improved. Insufficient ventilation in capital-intensive mining can cause production losses, the values of which far outweigh the significant costs of providing and operating an adequate ventilation plan. Many theories, and techniques in planning and control of underground ventilation systems have been developed over the years . It is the intent of this paper to point out some of the fundamental concepts, from the practical point of view, in the design and operation of a ventilation system, with special reference to underground mines using a room-and-pillar method.

This paper describes uses of sodium sulfide in the flotation of oxide and sulfide minerals of copper, lead, and zinc. The activation and depression effects of sodium sulfide are of particular importance because of their applications with oxidized lead and copper ores. In spite of its industrial importance; however, the nature of the heterogenious reactions between sulfide ions in solution and the surface of oxidized minerals has not been fully understood. Hence, proposed mechanisms of the sulfide action in flotation, methods of measuring and monitoring of sodium sulfide in flotation pulps, and variables influencing the sulfide addition are analyzed. A review of recent studies shows that sodium sulfide addition to flotation pulps can be monitored and hence the optimum dosage controlled using the platinum and/or sulfide specific ion electrodes. The use of these electrodes for improved reproducibility of bench-scale experimental data and plant implementation of laboratory results is described.

The report on cut and cover construction as assembled by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development covered 17 different countries based on a total of just under 400 individual replies of which about 30% of the replies were from the United States. In general, the review of replies to the questionnaire led to the impression that cut and cover construction is a very inadequate method which needed many improvements. This unfavorable judgment, however, resulted in the manner in which questions were asked rather than in the method itself, It can be concluded that the cut and cover construction method has proved itself as an excellent method and that it has reached a high degree of technological perfection, but inadequacies stilt exist, and for purposes of complete evaluation, comparisons with mining tunnelling methods should be carried out. The principal problem in cut and cover construction is the interaction during construction between the construction process and the existing use of the surface and subsurface environment. The greatest impediments to cut and cover construction have little to do with the physical works being constructed, but more with creating a site in which the work can be performed. Utility relocation, traffice maintenance, and protection of existing structures are major problems for the construction contractor, and too frequently receive insufficient attention in preconstruction planning and design. Atlas Dewatering was contracted to install and maintain a groundwater control system for the new Bessarion Subway Station and the Tail Track Structure on the Toronto Transit Commission’s new Sheppard Subway Line. Atlas met the challenges presented by the project by closely reviewing the contract documentation provided by the Program Geotechnical Consultant, Golder Associates and by working with the general contractors, Bondfield Construction Company and PCL Constructors Eastern, inc., throughout the duration of both projects. In addition to concerns about soil loss, excessive settlement and seepage, the consultant was concerned about spreading hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater between the two aquifers present at the Bessarion Station site. By installing a system of multi-level vacuum eductor wells around the perimeter of the excavation, Atlas was not only able to provide a dry excavation for construction, but, due to a unique well design was also able to prevent cross-contamination of the aquifers.

This paper discusses the replacement of AEROFLOAT ® 1 25 promoter by AERO ® 5688 promoter at Sonora Mining Corp.'s California Mother Lode concentrator. Flotation concentrate is trucked 120 miles to a leach plant in Nevada, so the reduced mass resulting from higher gold grades and reduced talceous gangue and barren pyrite resulting from this change in promoters has brought about a major decrease in shipping costs. Preliminary laboratory testing indicated that free milling gold and controlled amounts of pyrite could be floated using Aero 5688 promoter with reduced dosages of Aero 350 xanthate.2 Extensive plant trials confirmed that the new reagent suite could indeed maintain gold recoveries while reducing total mass. Improved froth characteristics also improved operating flexibility in treating various ore types, and overall reagent costs have been reduced.

The Alpine-Himalayan system, the only major active tectonic belt mainly exposed in a continental mass, is of increasing interest to exploration geologists as well as to theoreticians. Answers to the broader problems of plate tectonics are being sought in this intricate system where the geosynclinal concept was born and where the geotectonic cycle was first applied to metallogeny. The search is all the more intense because it involves scientists from more than a dozen countries with a stimulating variety in perspective. The international Geodynamics Project has allocated the Alpine-Himalayan system to two separate study groups with one directing its attention to the Alpine-Mediterranean region and the other giving consideration to the Himalayan region. This geographic division is accepted in this paper, with remarks being confined to the former and to the west of boundary zone between the European-Asian and the Southeast Asian plates as envisioned by Dewey and Bird (1970). The region is well-mapped in some parts and it includes some of the most intensely-studied geology, most classic mines, and newest orebody discoveries. Within the region, an Alpine-age copper-molybdenum metallogenic belt extends from Rumania to Pakistan. The belt can be considered in terms of plate tectonics, and there is the possibility of using plate tectonics concepts in exploration.

To meet the growing need for CO2 capture and storage technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and storage using alkali solutions1. Without implementing emission controls, world energy emissions will rise from 29.7 billion t in 2007 to 42.4 billion t in 2035. The first objective of the project was to determine the optimal amount of alkali in solution for CO2 absorption. This was accomplished using theoretical equilibrium calculations and experimental absorption data for alkali solutions of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 weight %. As the % alkali in solution increased, so, too, did the ionic strength of the solution. Theoretical calculations took into account the effect increasing ionic strength will have on the solubility of gaseous CO2. The calculations assumed negligible formation of H2CO3, constant temperature and constant pressure. In the experimental setup, a 16% CO2 /balance air gas mixture was bubbled through an Erlenmeyer flask filled with an alkali solution. The gas exiting the flask was fed to a gas analyzer to record the % CO2 in the exhaust gas stream. The % CO2 absorbed was taken as the % CO2 in the exhaust gas minus the % CO2 in the feed. Theoretical calculations found that as the % alkali in solution increases, the solubility of CO2 decreases. This was verified by experimental data, which found that a 2% alkali solution, by weight, was the ideal solution for CO2 absorption. Current research is focused on using the 2% alkali solution for permanent storage of CO2 via mineral carbonation to produce a value-added product.

Minimizing the effects of corrosion improves the long-term performance of the rock anchors and ground control systems in underground mines, which is fundamental for safe operation over the design period. The primary objective of this study is to explain the problems due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), strain-induced corrosion cracking (SICC) and other forms of corrosion, and why the mining industry’s ground control professionals should take this into serious consideration. It is important to clearly determine the kind of SCC mechanisms that causes roof bolt failures in order to suggest the necessary action plan to mitigate or eliminate the possibility of the cause. Pertinent literature and studies around the globe on this complicated subject are reviewed. The secondary objective is to encourage the use of corrosion-resistant ground control products in the underground mining industry in areas of high corrosion potential. Characteristics of SCC on high strength steel are also reviewed. The literature and preliminary studies to date indicate that research work is necessary in United States.

The safe evacuation of miners during an emergency in the shortest amount of time is one of the most essential features of a mining operation. Despite advancements in mine evacuation research, the usage of mine vehicles during evacuation has not been considered. The majority of recent studies have been done on miners’ evacuation on foot. Mathematical formulations including Minimum Cost Network Flow (MCNF) models, Dijkstra's algorithm, Floyd-Warshall algorithm, and Ant Colony Optimization models have been used to solve mine evacuation problems. These models, which concentrate on determining the shortest escape routes during the evacuation, have been found to be computationally expensive and may not offer the best solutions in some cases. The goal of this paper is to incorporate light vehicles in the evacuation process using a mixed-integer programming approach. The methodology aims to minimize the total time required to evacuate the mine, ensuring minimal exposure of the miners to the adverse conditions that triggered the evacuation.

One need be neither an historian nor technologist to recognize that activi¬ties related to the conversion of coal to other usable energy forms have been active for nearly fifty years. The degree of such activity and its evolution to significant commercial proportions has, however, fluctuated widely with world circumstance. For the past decade there has existed both a consistent technology evolution effort in classic R & D proportions, and a mainstream commercial acti¬vity but in rather modest proportions when viewed from the vantage point of world energy needs. But the chain of events wherein it became increasingly obvious that we were in energy trouble irrespective of world politics, spurred alternative energy source activities in the fossil fuels areas. The oil embargo of 1973-1974 made the obvious even more so and provided additional emphasis for the need of such alternatives. Yet the preponderance of these added expenditures and activities (with one notable exception which is the subject of this discussion) has been focused on the intended identification of the best or ultimate process by means of analytical and modest empirical means, whereas our circumstance dictates a bold, higher-risk effort to prove the viability of coal conversion as an industry on a real-time, real-size, real-economics basis. With such proof on hand, industry demands in all related areas will provide the stimulus, motivation and environment for all processes. There is both need and room for many who will compete for a meaningful segment of this new industry which can grow at a rate never seen before in our growth history. The single program in the world today oriented specifically toward the goal of proof of industry viability is the Energy Research and Development Administration's CBF (clean boiler fuels) Program for which COALCON is proud to be the prime contractor.

During design of a 550-foot rectangular shaft in alluvium, lateral support within the excavation was an anticipated construction problem. Actual experience showed that the nearly 9 x 14 foot excavation required no lateral support. A strain measurement program con- current with construction and for a 9-month period following completion of the shaft detected only minor strains. Shaft design included consideration of available geological information. Site exploration included a 754-foot drill hole, cored at selected intervals, and a suite of geophysical well logs. Generalized physical properties of the alluvium were developed from laboratory core testing. An elasto-plastic, finite element computer program (DAHLKE) developed by the Spokane Mining Research Center U.S. Bureau of Mines, has been recently used to analyze the behavior of the alluvium around the shaft. Analysis showed that yielding first develops in the shaft corners and progressively expands into the wall zones around the shaft as loading increases. Gradual growth of a plastic zone progressed outward from the excavation boundary at increasing loads but had limited extent and was surrounded at all stress levels by an infinite elastic zone. This design review, aided by computer analysis, confirmed that the shaft would have been considered theoretically stable as designed.

In a situation where big government is trying to have an effect on even small details of a work activity, otherwise simple situations become complex. Regulations are written to such detail that constant compliance with strict interpretations can be a nightmare--not to mention off the target of the intended purpose for the regulation. Introduction The concept of in-the-wall haulage was formally introduced to the mining community in the early 1970s. The basic concept is simple. Rather than the traditional in-the-pit haulage/access ramp, single or twin ramps driven in the pit wall are used with crosscut connections on the working levels. The in-the-wall pit haulage system could be considered as part of the opening of a new mine, a way of completing to final depth an existing pit, or part of the transition from open-pit to underground mining with the ramp remaining as part of the access. This paper is intended to acquaint the reader, particularly mine planning engineers, with some of the possibilities presented by the concept. Nordstrom (1983) said, "In many countries, mining engineers are either open-pit or underground specialists and, hence, often don't consider the possibilities for combining the best aspects of each into a hybrid mining system." This is believed to be true. There are few "hybrid mines" employing, for example, open-pit methods with underground haulage systems. One reason is the variance with the experience of the mining company and the engineers involved. However, with today's low metal prices, innovative and unconventional thinking may be just what a property requires to remain in production. All the possible situations where an in-the-wall ramp might be considered cannot be presented here. Rather, a few examples will be discussed for illustration purposes. Potential savings in stripping costs A major cost in open-pit mining is associated with the removal of overburden and waste rock. Although much of this stripping cannot be avoided, the volume (V) associated with the presence of an in-pit haul road can be quite large, V 100 (pit depth) a (road width) 2 x road grade (%) As an example, consider a vertical ore body 400 m (1312 ft) long, 60 m (197 ft) thick, extending to a depth of 160 m (525 ft). Cross sections are shown in Fig. 1. Other data are: ore tonnage = 11 Mt (12 million st), ore density = 2.9 t/m3 (0.09 st per cu ft), waste rock density = 2.7 t/m3 (0.08 st per cu ft), road width = 20 m (66 ft), road gradient = 10%, and level interval = 10 m (33 ft). The evaluation has been made assuming that the pit slope (0) is constant around the pit except on the side with the haul road. On this side, the slope is decreased to allow for the road. Slope angles of 30° to 60° have been selected to indicate the dependence of stripping volume (V) on slope angle. The stripping at the ends have been calculated assuming representation by cones. The volume associated with the haul road is 2.6 Mm3 (92.8 million cu ft). A comparison of the strip volumes involved is shown in Table 1. As can be seen, the percent savings in strip volume varies from about 4% to 17% and depends greatly on the slope angle. It is perhaps more interesting to examine the savings in stripping costs that could then be used to cover the cost of the access ramp and the crosscuts for stripping costs of $3/m3 ($0.08 per cu ft). The cost with the road volume is 2.6 million x 3 = $7.8 million.

Injecting water under pressure to wet the coalbed in advance of mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Owing to economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is currently limited to the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob gas boreholes. Computer coalbed reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed.
