A real-time transient pipeline simulation was used to model the operational pressure response in the concentrate and tailings pipelines of the Minera Los Pelambres copper mine in Chile. A high-fidelity simulator was needed to train the operators on safe operation of the pipeline for different scenarios. A simulator that solves the transient equations was used to dynamically predict the pressure and flow throughout the pipeline to provide real-time responses to operational changes such as opening or closing a choke valve, or sending a water batch. Slurry rheological properties were incorporated into the model. This paper presents the technical background of the pipeline simulation model and the study of slurry properties. The paper shows the results of the transient simulation for different operating scenarios such as start-up, shutdown and leakage, by presenting the hydraulic gradient curves for each case. Finally, the paper briefly presents how the simulator was connected to an emulated control system and used to train the operator, it demonstrates the most effective tool available to learn to resolve undesirable conditions.

New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (NMBGMR) has been collecting data on uranium mining districts, mines and mills since it was created in 1927 and has converted years of historical data into a relational database that can be imported in ArcMap. The database includes information on mining districts, mines, mills and geochemistry, as well as photographs and bibliographic resources. The available data includes location, production, reserves, geologic, geochemical, resource potential and other data. The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) stream-sediment data provides geochemical analyses for >27,000 samples collected in New Mexico during the 1970s. The NURE hydrogeochemical data provides analyses of water samples. ArcMap includes the location of individual ore bodies as polygons and incorporates the mines and NURE data as individual site locations. The purposes of these databases are to provide computerized data that will aid in identifying and evaluating resource potential, resource development and management, production and possible environmental concerns, such as physical hazards (i.e., hazardous mine openings), indoor radon, regional exposure to radiation from the mines, background geochemical data and point sources of possible pollution in areas of known mineral deposits.

During the design and construction of a coal preparation facility, there are many items that can cause serious problems if not properly handled in the early stages of a project. These problems can be a detriment to smooth owner/ contractor relationships, the designing of a flow sheet, the selection of equipment, the design of the facility, the maintenance of schedule and budget, and a smooth start-up. It is the purpose of this presentation to identify some of these problems and to suggest steps that can be taken to reduce or eliminate their impact.

A stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model is developed based on mine site core log data to predict the horizontal and vertical permeabilities from the surface to the top of the caved zone at a longwall mining site in southwestern Pennsylvania. One hundred DFN realizations were generated to determine permeabilities for the isolated zone over an abutment pillar after mining the second panel. The results from this study show that the vertical and horizontal permeabilities from the DFN model agree closely with field measurements, which indicates that the resultant permeability obtained from the field measurements is representative of the predicted permeabilities. With this agreement, the aperture data for other zones of the mine could be obtained from the geomechanical model — specifically, for the fractured zone over the gob. Based on the successful validation of this model, this model could be further developed to predict the permeability of the fractured zone over the gob with fracture aperture obtained from the geomechanical analysis. This will complete the fracture characterization of the overburden, which could be used to predict potential shale gas flow to the mine in the event of a breach. This prediction could provide information on the associated risk of a casing breach and determination of methods to proactively prevent such an occurrence.

Researchers at the University of Alabama are investigating artificial intelligence based computer models of mineral processing systems. Two approaches have been found to be particularly effective in developing data-driven computer models. The first approach employs neural networks which are computational paradigms based on the mechanics of the human brain. They are able to extract the basic relationships between input and output variables from large data sets. The second approach combines fuzzy mathematics with genetic algorithms to produce an adaptive modeling system. Fuzzy mathematics provide computers with the capability of manipulating abstract concepts like those which humans use so effectively in decision making. Genetic algorithms are search algorithms that mimic evolutionary processes apparent in nature. Together, these two techniques can be used to produce an effective modeling system. In this paper, the two approaches to modeling are compared and contrasted with respect to accuracy and computational time while used to model three mineral processing systems: (1) a grinding circuit, (2) a hydrocyclone separator, and (3) a flotation circuit.

High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are an accepted, but continuously expanding, comminution technology. The copper industry has a growing need to process harder ores with progressively lower grades, more challenging metallurgy and increasing demand for efficient bacterial leaching applications. This has resulted in a major focus on HPGR use in a crushing circuit. If the industry is to increase leach extraction while lowering energy costs in high-throughput hydrometallurgical operations, HPGR will be of inherent significance. The following paper summarizes test work on copper leach ores utilizing the benefits of HPGR comminution, while increasing several critical metallurgical parameters. Based on the current work and previous investigations, it was found that HPGR comminution within a crushing circuit, in specific instances, can result in 2 - >10% increases in cop-per extraction. The tested variables are crush size, rock type and copper mineralogy dependence. Various other process parameters may also be optimized.

The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. Recently, however, a microcomputer-based system, af¬fordable to smaller mine opera¬tors, has become technologically feasible. Y. C. Kim and W. E. Kolb re¬ported on a simulated microcom¬puter system that uses strategi¬cally placed signposts in the pit area to automatically detect truck movements. A microprocessor in the signpost sends information to the microcomputer. The computer determines the truck's assign¬ment and alerts the dispatcher. He radios the driver his assign¬ment. In addition to the technical pa¬pers, an introductory short course on microcomputers was offered at the meeting. L. M. Kass and J. P. The paper describes the new design criteria and control strategies for multi-density dense medium separation (DMS) circuits. The role of the multi-density separation is discussed, and it is emphasized that for many processing problems -related to minerals and coals -it may be very important to perform two or more cuts at different densities in order to obtain a remarkable improvement in quality of products, process efficiency and economy. The two-density separation by dense medium cyclones was generally performed using two dense medium plants in sequence. In contrast to the former technology, the multi-density separation can now be performed by using a single medium circuit composed of different interconnected medium sumps. The sumps, one for each density, are fed with different medium streams selected according to their density, size composition and content in non-magnetic contaminant in such a way that the rheological properties of the media are optimized. This new technology is based on dynamic systems to density the medium, on the size-density segregation of the medium in the cyclones and separating devices and on accurate control systems for the density, viscosity and stability of the dense media of the different sumps. The present paper reports on the theoretical basis for the new, advanced medium circuits and on the systems for the control of the densities and of the rheological properties of the dense media. A typical circuit for a two-density separation is also described, and some industrial applications reported and discussed.

In spite of potential theoretical and economic advantages of large-diameter ball mills, many manufacturers elect not to build these mills owing to what is perceived as an excessively large design risk. This risk results from the fact that traditional predictions for mill-scale-up to large diameters are not always accurate. It is apparent that alternative methods of analysis and scale-up are required. Recent studies have shown that detailed population balance models which account for important grinding subprocesses, i.e., grinding kinetics, material transport, and classification, are capable of predicting the performance of small- and intermediate diameter mills (up to 4.3 m (14 ft)) from small-scale batch tests. These same models are used in the current study to predict the performance of a "borderline" large ball mill (4.7x5.5 m) at Asarco's Sacaton operation, a ball mill (5.0x5.8 m) at Kennecott's Chino operation, and one of the world's largest ball mills (5.5x6.1 m), at Cities Service Pinto Valley operation. Model parameters required for scale-up have been estimated in a 380-mm diameter batch mill. Predictions are compared with the results of detailed plant sampling in the three plants. For the Sacaton and Chino operations, the error of the predictions was found to be less than 2.5%, while the corresponding error for the Pinto Valley operation was less than 2.7%. It is concluded that proper representation of the major subprocesses of grinding in the model equation is the key to achieving accurate scale-up. Of special importance is the need to account for the size distribution of the grinding media and the influence of the size distribution environment in the mill on grinding kinetics.

Maintaining satisfactory air quality in electrowinning tankhouses is problematic and costly, particularly as plant operating current densities have increased. Conventional approaches have not proved completely effective. These include the use of beads, hollow spheres, surfactants and coalescer devices. They require powerful ventilation systems to be installed. As workplace and environmental regulations become more stringent, containment of the acid mist at its source is more attractive. An electrode cap system based on this approach has been developed and tested in two commercial copper electrowinning tankhouses.

Blasting with the aim to reduce oversize boulders in underground has many hurdles due to limited accessibilities and poor site conditions. Optimized drilling and blasting parameters can help to achieve this objective. The major challenges of the blast designers lie within deciding blast geometry, namely drill hole diameter, burden, and spacing. The general approaches covered worldwide to determine burden-spacing are based on various rules of thumb, which are based on previous experiences of blasts and the associated outcomes. However, many parameters influencing optimum burden-spacing to achieve desired fragment size are site specific. Sometimes drill geometry is decided based on associated blasting hazards rather than rock fragmentation. The Kuz–Ram model is a worldwide accepted rock fragmentation predictor. The parameters associated with this predictor also include burden-spacing for a blast. Back calculation of burden-spacing from the Kuz–Ram model can be used to achieve desired fragment size. This paper deals with burden-spacing determination by using an empirical approach for the underground stope ring blasting.

The paper presents background information including data on diesel exhaust pollutants, amounts produced and standards, a desscription of mine characteristics that affect air monitoring techniques and a review of portable measurement techniques and instruments for gas and particulate matter sampling. A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the Experimental Mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the Mine Air Monitoring Lab (MAML), the portable instruments and the production mines used.

In addition to directly analyzing the surfaces of minerals using high vacuum instrumentation methods, some important surface properties of mineral fillers can be determined indirectly by using reactive chemical probe molecules. This technique enables the strength and the number of the surface reactive sites to evaluation and this type of information is useful in predicting interfacial behaviour of minerals. One method of classifying these surface sites is by using Lewis acid/base theory and this type of approach could enable one to predict the adsorption of functional groups in dispersants, thickeners, pigments, etc. Also the adhesion of polymer matrices to the filler surface may be improved.

"Each January, tunneling and underground professionals gather in New York City for the George A. Fox Conference. The one-day event offers attendees the opportunity to listen to their peers outline what’s new in the underground construction industry, get updates on major projects in North America and have a chance to catch up of old friends.The conference is put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME. This latest conference attracted about 370 specialists in the industry. The theme for this year’s event was “Water Tunnels, Past, Present and Future.”The technical session included talks focused on major tunneling projects, including the massive California Water Fix program and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) Metropolitan tunnel redundance program in Boston. The conference also included an update on the Gateway Project from Phil Rice from WSP and Mahammed Nasim of Amtrak as well as a Tunnel Industry update.The following is a sample of a few of the presentations. Technical presentationsDEP’s Tunneling Program Evolution. James Mueller is the agency chief engineer of New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Its mission is to plan sustainable infrastructure investments for the future of clean water and the environment in the city and its watersheds, he said. The agency’s goals are to synthesize information across bureaus within DEP to allow data-driven decision-making. It is also to optimize internal agency processes and systems related to the implmenation of engineering programs within a structured assessment process. The agency also prioritizes projects and funding within a structured integrated planning process. And it standardizes project performance and delivery to meet the needs of the agency in alignment with industry standards and market capabilities."

Froth flotation of alumina particles was studied by employing and hydrogen gas bubbles. The effect of current density was studied over a range of 0.1 to1.6 kA/m2. Compared to hydrogen, the use of oxygen bubbles at any given gas evolution rate resulted in a higher flotation recovery. The existence of an optimum current density, for each given particle size was indicated. Flotation at higher current densities resulted in better flotation kinetics, while flotation at lower current densities resulted in better Spas utilization.

American Electric Power Company (AEP operates 31 coal mines in three states, and some 26 electric generating stations (19 coal-fired) located in the Ohio River Basin. Normally the system burns over 36,071,600 tonnes (40,000,000 tons) of coal and generates in excess of 3.6 X 1018 J (100 billion kwh) of electricity per year. In 1975, AEP, in response to the progressively more stringent air quality requirements of the clean air act, acquired large low-sulfur reserves in Carbon County, Utah (Figure 1. Location Map). Price River Coal Company (PRCC) is the operator OF this multi-seam complex, which is part of the Book Cliffs coalfield at an elevation exceeding 1,829 m (6,000 ft.). The topography is mountainous and divided by numerous canyons. Flat areas are at a premium (Figure 2. Castle Gate Area). Modern high production longwall mining takes in some top and bottom waste, and in this particular operation, it amounts to about 14% of the ROM tonnage.

At the present time, the Florida phosphate industry is experiencing one of the worst marked slumps in its one hundred year history. Recent agriculture over-production has caused low grain prices such that the net income of U.S. farmers is expected to drop to its lowest level since the 1932 depression. The farmers' low income, along with high interest rates that preclude them from borrowing to purchase fertilizer, make the immediate U.S. phosphate market outlook bleek at best. The export outlook is also pessimistic due to world recession and the U.S. dollar's high exchange rate. In June, 26% of the phosphate industry's workers were laid off for an indefinite period of time. Despite the immediate painful slump, the long-term outlook for the industry looks good. Florida has enormous reserves and will continue to produce a third of the world's phosphate supply simply by making changes in the present system of mining, beneficiation, waste disposal and land reclamation.

The permeability in the blast furnace shaft is adversely affected by low temperature reduction degradation of sinters. The fundamental cause is an expansion of the iron oxide phase resulting from reduction of hematite to magnetite. The present study showed that expansion behavior during the hematite / magnetite reduction step and the resulting microstructure are strongly influenced by the reduction temperature (viz. partial oxygen pressure), the reducing agent and the nature of the hematite. The reduction rate is of minor importance. A reduction mechanism is proposed, explaining the dilation behavior and the magnetite microstructure. The results can provide better insight into reduction degradation behavior.

What is required for the mining industry to grow and prosper in a politically challenging world? The answer to this can be summarized as “the industry’s three priorities.” The first priority is gaining access to the world’s mineralized jurisdictions. The second is establishing a measure of security and predictability in government treatment of mining. Confidence in the stability of the fiscal and legal framework within which mining operates is necessary to encourage the investment of large amounts of capital in mine development. The third priority is sustaining the industry’s welcome during the long term in those jurisdictions worthy of investment.
