The People's Republic of China has 582 Gt (641 billion tons) of proven coal reserves. At present, 576.5 Mt (635.5 million tons) of coal are mined a year which makes China the third largest producer of coal in the world. Underground mining accounts for 95% of the total production. This paper will discuss the coal districts, coal types, jurisdiction of coal mining, and methods of underground mining. The article also will outline China's objectives in future planning and development of its coal reserves.

After several years of laboratory and field evaluations, it has been established that each frother has its own unique relationship among bubble size reduction, gas hold-up increase, froth stabilization and frother concentration. It has been shown that a frother?s hydrodynamic properties can be characterized using the relationship between the froth zone property froth height and the pulp zone property gas hold-up. The relationship is established in a bubble column run at a given air rate over a range of frother concentration. The use of relationships in frother selection and plant diagnostics is illustrated in a series of plant case studies.

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

On July 24, 2002, a nonfatal entrapment accident occurred at the Quecreek #1 Mine, Black Wolf Coal Company, when an active mining section inadvertently cut into a flooded abandoned mine. This incident, and the dramatic rescue which ensued, brought national attention to a common problem in the coal mining industry. Since 1995, there have been more than 100 inundations at coal mines in the United States. Unavailable, inaccurate, or incomplete mapping of older abandoned mines is typically responsible. Serious problems associated with accidental discharges of fluid mine waste material (slurry) and water from coal refuse disposal facilities have resulted from similar causes. Recent problems related to the inaccurate location of old abandoned mine works have increased the interest in the use of conventional and emerging drilling and geophysical techniques for detection of air-filled and water-filled cavities. The United States Congress has committed significant funding toward investigating the applicability of these technologies. MSHA actively promotes the use of the best available technology to minimize the significant adverse safety and environmental consequences associated with unplanned breakthroughs and inundations. This paper provides background information and a general summary of the MSHA-sponsored field demonstration projects which are currently in progress. Potential benefits and limitations are discussed. The need for field verification/ground-truthing is emphasized. Under appropriate conditions, geophysical methods can be effectively integrated into a comprehensive field exploration program.

"This work presents a method for the precipitation of cobalt sulfate by alcohols, specifically ethanol and methanol. The effect of the initial concentration of cobalt, the volumetric ratio of alcohol to cobalt sulfate solution, the addition of sulfuric acid and ammonia, and the effects of common ions on the precipitation percentage were investigated. The performances of ethanol and methanol were compared in terms of the precipitation percentage of cobalt sulfate, and explanations for different performances are offered. In the sulfate-based solution, the alcohol was shown to displace water ligands from the first coordination sphere of the cobalt(II) cations, which led to the precipitation of the cobalt ions as cobalt sulfate heptahydrate. SEM analysis revealed that the particle sizes of the powders produced by this method are smaller than those of commercially available cobalt sulfate. The scientific literature contains no data on the solubility of cobalt sulfate in ethanol. In this study, the solubility product constant (Ksp) for cobalt sulfate was experimentally calculated to be approximately 1.15 x 10-5.IntroductionCobalt sulfate, which is one of the most important compounds of cobalt, is used in the electroplating and electrochemical industries. The addition of cobalt sulfate to nickel-plating baths makes the treated metals brighter, harder, smoother and more ductile (Armstrong et al., 1988). It is also used as a desiccant for lithographic inks, varnishes, paints and linoleum, as well as in storage batteries, e.g., nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable batteries (Kang et al., 2010). Cobalt sulfate is employed as a coloring agent in ceramics, enamels and glazes to prevent discoloration and as a copigment for the decoration of porcelain. In addition, cobalt sulfate has been used in animal feeds as a mineral supplement (Budavari et al., 1996; Kirk and Othmer, 1999).In the past, brewers used cobalt sulfate to prolong the life of beer foam (Kesteloot et al., 1968). Ranchers have dosed livestock with cobalt sulfate or used fertilizer enriched with this mineral to ensure that their animals obtained sufficient amounts of the trace mineral, which is essential to the production of vitamin B12. Cobalt sulfate has also been used in veterinary medication to prevent and treat cobalt deficiency in ruminants, which causes a reduction in feed intake and body weight, accompanied by emaciation, anemia and debility.Cobalt sulfate is a water-soluble bivalent cobalt salt. Cobalt sulfate heptahydrate dehydrates entirely at 420° C, and the dehydrated salt forms red monoclinic crystals."

In May of 1996, Twentymile Coal Co. began Longwall mining in the Foidel Creek Mine's East Mine District. These Longwall panels are some of the longest in the world (5.48 km/18,000 ft) with very difficult and challenging geometry. The conveyance system is 1,800 mm (72 in) wide, has a 4,500 mtph (5,000 stph) capacity and employs multiple tripper drives. The trippers include traditional powering designs as well as unique regeneration and braking designs. Several components were developed specifically for this application including a mobile tail brake. Control algorithms were carefully developed and tested via computer modeling. A world production record was achieved in the third month of operation and over 1 million tons were mined in June 1997.

A study has been conducted to remove iron from sulfate solutions using Eichrom's Dipexo® extractant, P,P'-di(2ethylhexyl) methanediphosponic acid (H2DEH[MDP]). It is found that this extractant can effectively and selectively extract ferric ion from highly acidic solutions. Ninety-nine percent of the iron was extracted from a simulated feed solution in a single stage. The separation factor, Fe/Zn, was 106. Over 90% of the iron in a loaded organic can be recovered in an aqueous solution by reductive stripping. This paper presents the experimental results. A new process for iron removal using Dipex extractant is described and discussed.

The sign of the surface charge of selected potassium soluble salt minerals namely KClO4 , K2SO4 , KNO3, and KCl was determined from nonequilibrium electrophoresis measurements and found to be negative for each of the salt. Dodecylamine flotation of these salts revealed that the concentration of amine required for flotation increases in the order KClO4< K2SO4< KNO3<KCl. Precipitationof the amine collector colloid was not required for flotation of the oxyanion salts and in this case it appears that adsorption of the dodecylamine cation is sufficient to create the hydrophobic surface state. The order for flotation is explained in terms of surface hydration of these respective potassium salts based on contact angle measurements and FT Raman spectroscopic characterization of water structure.

"The McCook Main Tunnel connects Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. The tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490-m (1,600-ft) long hard-rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90-ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate shaft. The gate shaft houses six high-head 4.4 x 9 m (14.5 x 29.5 ft) wheel gates installed in the bifurcated and steel-lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir. Construction of the McCook Main Tunnel in live flow conditions was a challenging task for the McCook Main Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch and contractor Kiewit Infrastructure Co. (Kiewit). Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2029, the McCook Reservoir will hold 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and 36 surrounding communities in Cook County, IL The construction of the tunnel system was divided into two contracts. The first contract for the gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The second contract included tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining that was completed in September 2014; installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders that was completed in June 2017; and the last major construction activity was the removal of a temporary concrete plug (bulkhead) and lining that tunnel section to bring the overall tunnel and gates system online before Dec. 31, 2017.This article focuses on the installation, testing and commissioning of the high head wheel gates. Live tunnel connection details to TARP Mainstream Tunnel were addressed in a previous paper submitted at the World Tunneling Conference in 2016."

Few departments of mining, metallurgical or petroleum engineering in the United States have critical mass. Cost per student credit hour (SCH) in departments across the country are usually the highest among engineering departments, which are the highest on campus. Almost all departments are operating at fixed costs and enrollments could easily double without incurring much additional cost. However, the cost per SCH would remain unacceptably high and the probability of doubling enrollment is nil. Declining enrollment is a more likely future. The pressure to reduce SCH from university administration is unrelenting. And it has the potential for doing serious damage to program quality when standards and requirements are lowered in attempts to maintain enrollments and increase retention.

Low-grade manganese ores with low Mn/Fe ratios can he enriched through selective carbon reduction of iron oxide to magnetite followed by magnetic separation o f the magnetite. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to assess the preferential isothermal reduction of pure M1702 and Fe2O3 using solid carbon. This was followed by reduction of a synthetic analogue of composition comparable to an actual low-grade ore (i.e., Sandur manganese ore, Sandur, India). The carbothermic reduction of the manganese ore converts the hematite and goethite minerals to magnetite (Fe3O4), with the magnetite then going into the magnetic, fraction. The resultant nonmagnetic ,fraction becomes depleted of iron with an enhanced manganese content. These results show that it is possible to reduce the iron from 22% to 5.85%, thus increasing the Mn/Fe ratio from 1.52 to 6.2 with a manganese recovery of about 50%. The recovery was, further improved by grinding the magnetic fraction to -75 µm.

Dry coal separation technology has particular advantages in the applications in arid and cold regions, or low rank coal separation. The hazardous pollutants in low rank coals can not be efficiently removed by conventional wet coal separation processes because a considerable amount of porose and easily friable low rank coals suffer serious particle size degradation problems in water. In this paper, a novel dry coal separation method with a vibrated air-fluidized bed of magnetic fly ash and magnetite is put forward for dry coal beneficiation. The magnetic fly ash used in this study was derived from fly ash obtained as a byproduct of coal combustion. The vibration?s effect on the uniformity and stability of a magnetic fly ash air-fluidized bed was studied. The 6×0.5 mm dry coal separation results with a vibrated air-fluidized bed of magnetic fly ash and magnetite showed that the probable error E value of separation is 0.06-0.08 t/m3.

The Mina Santa Rosa mine in Panama was the victim of a mine closure 24 years ago that left the community in dire straits. The mine showed the potential resources of greater than 1M ounces of gold and 4.5M ounces of silver. Veragold Mining Company decided to reopen the mine and address all the issues that were involved in the startup of an historic mine. This paper provides methods to restore the community trust, provide a transparent process, and develop an environmentally sound flowsheet. Immense scrutiny surrounded the Tailings Storage Facility, and the company developed a plan focused on paste thickening and surface stacking to eliminate the need for a conventional tailings’ facility. Paste thickener principles and benefits are also provided.

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.&apos;s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott&apos;s exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine&apos;s three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. The 1989 mining industry compensation survey done annually by the Denver-based Mountain States Employers Council shows the "average" or "typical" employee in the mining industry is projected to receive an increase of 3.9% to base pay in 1990, compared to a projection of 4.1 % for 1989. According to MSEC, the actual percentage increase to base pay has continued to decline since 1980. A review of pay increases since 1980 shows the highest average increase was 11%, granted in 1981. Since 1981, there has been a steady deceleration through the decade. While 1989 final figures are not available, 1988 numbers might indicate a reversal of this trend. In 1988, the average employee actual increase was 3.8%. That was 0.7% higher than the 3.1% projection. This may be significant as actual increases have been lower than projections since 1982. Chart A shows the pattern of projected vs. actual percent increases in pay since 1980.

Southern Arizona has one of the world&apos;s principal concentrations of copper ore bodies. Twenty miles south of Tucson, close to the Mexican border at Sahuarita in Pima County, is the Twin Buttes mine. In mid-1973, the Anaconda Company and American Metals Climax Incorporated (AMAX) established a 50-50 partnership to operate and expand the Twin Buttes property. Anamax Mining Company was established as the operating company for this joint venture. The production from the Twin Buttes mine is shared between the two partners who market independently. A major expansion of the Twin Buttes operation has included an accelerated stripping programrne for the pit, an expansion of the sulphide concentrator, the construction of an oxide leach plant and a 57 MW diesel generating power station. Part of this major expansion, the large tonnage oxide processing plant was brought on stream in 1975 and is now close to design capacity. The "mine to market gap" has been closed by producing high-purity copper cathodes at the mine site from oxide ore reserves. By using a hydrometallurgical process route, copper production is possible with negligible effects on the environment.

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation&apos;s experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau&apos;s water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau&apos;s first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. Precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels have traditionally been designed with conventional steel bar reinforcement. In many cases, this has been satisfactory in service, but in others, major problems have occurred with the durability of the linings. Commonly this has resulted from corrosion of the reinforcement, mainly from chloridesin ground water, causing spalling of the concrete and leading to very expensive and disruptive repair programs. This paper discusses the relative merits of designing tunnel linings with steel fiber reinforcement to provide long-term durability, improved impact resistance and toughness for greater load capacity across joints, enhanced robustness during transportation and erection, plus improved fire resistance with the addition of polypropylene fibers. Guidance is also given in the selection of the correct fiber type, mix design and testing methods to establish the optimum dosage required and production techniques to ensure even distribution and compaction.

Pattison Mine is a small sandstone mine located in Iowa. The sandstones produced by the mine are not common construction and aggregate materials. The stones are used to produce a special type of sand for hydraulic fracturing, a critical technique for recovering tight gas and shale gas. These sandstones are very different from the minerals and rocks which have been studied extensively in mining. On the one hand, they are brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle, up to 69°, and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, they are friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The scarcity of the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment has created many difficulties for the mine operators. In order to resolve these problems, a research program was set up by the mine and Missouri University of Science and Technology. This paper discusses the preliminary results of this investigation.
