At the present time, whether an electric utility uses high-sulfur coal is largely determined by geographical location, clean air legislation, and the age of the power plant. Acid rain legislation may well be the new force to change the use of high-sulfur coal. A number of coal papers were presented at the SME Fall Meeting in St. Louis, MO, Sept. 1986. These papers discussed high-sulfur coal in relation to its economics, trends and prospects, value of cleaned coal, and coal-cleaning technology. The Clean Air Act of 1970 required the reduction of SO, emissions from most stationary electric-generating plant to 0.5 kg (1.2 lbs) SO2, per million Btu of heat input. It was possible for many plants to utilize lower-sulfur coal or a mixture of high-sulfur and low-sulfur coal to meet this emission requirement. This 1970 act greatly increased the use of low-sulfur western coal. The 1978 amendment to the Clean Air Act required all new plants to use Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) to meet a requirement of 70% reduction of potential SO2 emissions to 0.3 kg (0.6 lb) SO2 per million Btu of heat input. With the requirement to use FGD, there was little or no demand for low-sulfur western coal in new eastern power plants. If' new acid rain legislation is enacted, it likely will require sizeable reductions in SO2, emissions by existing coal users. There might then be a shift to greater use of low-sulfur coals. The low-sulfur coals could come from either western or eastern mines or from cleaned eastern coals. Economics will dictate the approach older power plants will take to meet new regulationsuse FGD or low-sulfur coal. Coal use for electric power generation has changed from 1970 to 1985. Table 1, (Land, preprint 86-333) shows the change. The table shows that in 1985, US utilities used about 255 Mt (280 million st) of high-sulfur coal. Some 45 to 54 Mt (50 to 60 million st) of high-sulfur coal is being used in plants equipped with FGD and most of this use is in eastern states. This leaves 200 to 209 Mt/a (220 to 230 million st) of high-sulfur coal being used without FGD treatment. These plants are at risk if acid rain legislation is passed. Most of these plants are in the east and are more difficult to supply with low-sulfur coal. Estimates range from $20 to $30 billion capital investment and from $5 to $9 billion dollars per year operating costs to reduce SO2, emissions from those old medium-to-high-sulfur coal-burning plants. G. W. Land, (preprint 86-333), also presents tables relating to power generating costs and coal types. The author's tables are extracted from Land's tables IV and V. Table 2 here presents costs for a new plant. This includes the impact of different heat rates, fuel costs, fuel qualities, operating and maintenance costs, labor costs, and waste disposal costs. Table 3 compares estimated costs to retrofit an older plant with a limestone scrubber versus switching the same plant to low-sulfur eastern or western coal. Costs of switching include upgrading the electrostatic precipitator and - with western coal - costs of derating. Bhagwat, (preprint 86-325), details the trends in high-sulfur coal markets from 1974 to 1984. He also gives some prospects for high-sulfur coal markets, 1984 to 1994. The prospect depends mostly on whether acid rain legislation is enacted. By 1994, if New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) continue to be applied, high-sulfur coal demand from six mid-west and eastern states is expected to increase by 27 Mt (30 million st). • L. A. A 1995 RETC paper of similar title presented a method for estimating rock tunnel water inflow based on semi-empirical correlations with borehole water pressure tests. Since that time the author has found the method to be very useful, and it has been used by others in the industry. This current paper is an update which is intended to: A. More clearly explain assumptions and limitations of the method. B. Describe some case history examples. C. Respond to questions which have been raised; and extend the method to other considerations including distribution of inflow along the tunnel, panning requirements, interpretation of tunnel probe hole water inflow, and estimation of potential effectiveness of pre-excavation grouting to reduce water inflow.

High value materials, such as gold, platinum and other precious metals are subject to loss through unauthorized removal from mines, smelters, refiners, and other places where such materials are processed. A study published in 20011 determined that between 1994 and 1998 an average of 603 kilograms of gold per year was stolen from South African miners and subsequently recovered. This does not include the gold that was stolen but not recovered. At 2011 prices, 603 kilograms of gold would be worth approximately $33 million. Mine security personnel believe that the unrecovered stolen gold far exceeds what is recovered2. Traditionally, metal detectors have been used to screen personnel leaving secure areas to discourage such unauthorized removal. However, with the current near-record prices of gold, platinum, and other precious metals, it has become worthwhile for people exiting a facility to walk out with quantities of product that are too small for ordinary metal detectors to register, resulting in substantial financial losses.

Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and stability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

We studied mineralogical characteristics of the vermiculite samples from seven mines in China. We found three types of interstratified structures in the investigated samples: 1:1 regular interstratified structure, segregated interstratified structure, and random interstratified structure. The vermiculite samples from six mines are mainly composed of phlogopite?vermiculite interstratified minerals, and the samples from the other mine are composed of chlorite?vermiculite interstratified mineral. The samples with phlogopite?vermiculite structure have high contents of K2O, TiO2 and Na2O. The samples with chlorite?vermiculite structure have the highest contents of MgO and Al2O3. The cation exchange capacity of the samples is 17.3?99.0 mmol/100g.The exchangeable cations of phlogopite?vermiculite samples from Weili Mine mainly include Na+ and Ca2+, while those of phlogopite?vermiculite samples from Tongguan Mine mainly include Mg2+ and Ca2+. The thermal expansion ratio of the samples is between 9 and 32. The exfoliated vermiculite products from Weili Mine have the best mechanical strength.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2010 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2010: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2010, as compiled by the USGS, and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities. These were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

An ilmenite concentrate was reduced in the solid state with carbon under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1000oC and 1400oC. The ilmenite concentrate and 50% excess carbon were reacted to achieve the highest attainable degree of reduction at each temperature and the reaction products were subjected to a series of analytical work by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM ( EDS) analysis. The ilmenite remained unaltered at 1000oC and had a slight change in its composition at 1050oC. A secondary oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was detectable at 12% reduction at 1100oC. The reduction of TixOy took place in a sequence changing the y/x ratio from 2.0 to a value less than 1.0 at 84% reduction at 1400oC. Metallic phase consisted of Fe and C initially and started to include Ti at the later stages. Complete reduction of TixOy to metallic Ti was not possible at these temperatures.

"A walk through the exhibit hall or a glance at the technical programing that was offered at the 2019 SME Annual Conference & Expo and CMA 121st National Western Mining Conference in Denver, CO, Feb. 24-27 makes it evident that the mining industry is an innovative one that is on the cutting edge of technology. However, a glance at the nearly 6,700 attendees of the conference and it is also evident that while the industry is moving forward at a rapid pace in some areas, it is lagging behind in terms of diversity, both in gender and ethnicity.At Monday morning’s keynote session, Hannah Ubi, a millennial and a public speaker who joked that she is the proud owner of a sixth-place swimming trophy and a number of participation medals, addressed a full house that consisted of many men with gray hair or balding heads. The issue of an aging workforce that is rapidly being depleted by retirements is not a new one for the mining industry. In fact, it has been a concern for the industry for more than a decade. The central question has long been, “when the current senior-level people begin to retire, how do we replace them, and how do we fill the knowledge gap that is walking off into the sunset?” SME has been on the front lines in searching for solutions to the impending problem and, along with industry partners, has worked hard to develop programs that will address these issues. Among other efforts, the Society has developed a Ph.D. fellowship program to encourage people to remain in academia to teach the next generation and to help train the next generation to take over in the private sector.“The SME Foundation’s Ph.D. and Career Development Grant program is exceeding expectations at this point with two Ph.D. students graduating and taking a position in academia and two professors achieving tenure,” SME Executive Director Dave Kanagy said during the conference.The Society’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) has done its part to help educate future generations about the mining industry with initiatives like EngineerGirl, the Boy Scout Merit Badge and Move Mining, the Shark-Tank-style competition that was held on Monday with five finalists competing for the top prize (ME, April 2019, page 53)."

Identifying, quantifying and minimizing technical risks associated to investment decisions is a key challenge for the minerals industry decision takers and investors. However, risk analysis in most bankable mine feasibility studies are based on stochastic modelling of project NPV which, in most cases, fail to provide decision makers with a truly comprehensive analysis of risks associated to technical and management uncertainty and, as the result, are of little use for risk management and project optimization. This paper presents a value-chain risk management approach where project risk is evaluated for each step of the project lifecycle, from exploration to mine closure, and risk management is performed as part of a stepwise value added optimization process.

Technical innovation in electrical and electronic equipment with new functions and design, stimulate consumer?s purchasing desire towards the latest equipments and this leads the rapid increase in the production of increased amount of waste materials Treason et al (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category; this emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. Recycling of electronic waste is an important subject not only from the point of waste treatment but also from the recovery aspect of valuable materials. However, recycling of electronic scrap is still quite limited due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al. 2005). A bioleaching based process offers a number of advantages compared to the conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). The advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and eco-friendly approach besides, generation of less active leach residue then other metallurgical processes. Though, biohydrometallurgical process has been successfully applied for the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al. 2003; Rawling 2000), data pertaining to its application for the extraction of electronic scrap is still scanty. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for extraction of metals from electronic scrap/printed circuit boards (Brandl et al. 2001; Faramarzi et al. 2004; Choi et al. 2004, Ilyas et al. 2007; Ilyas et al. 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans) or cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has the following advantages: (i) ability to grow under higher pH, and thus is more suitable in bioleaching of alkaline solid waste (ii) a generally faster leaching process with shorter lag phase (iii) Chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g. organic acids) with metal ion, thus reduce its toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller et al. 1993; Aung and Ting 2005). The presence of iron in sphalerite induces the formation of zinc ferrite (ZF) during roasting. Zinc refinery residues (ZRR) and electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) contain a significant amount of zinc ferrite and are difficult to treat. According to the literature, up to 71% ZF has been found to be present in ZRR. The dissolution of zinc ferrite is inefficient even in aqua regia. The Waelz process is an existing process to recover zinc from electric arc furnace dust by reduction using carbon monoxide followed by the volatilization of zinc. In this study, zinc was selectively extracted from zinc ferrite by partial reduction of zinc ferrite at relatively low temperature followed by leaching in dilute sulfuric acid (20 g/L). Pure zinc ferrite samples were partially reduced to zinc oxide and magnetite by using H2 gas as a reductant. The presence of magnetite and zinc oxide was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. A maximum of 95%zinc extraction was achieved after leaching with sulfuric acid on the reacted samples. The paper also discusses the effect of time, temperature, and concentration of H2 in the reducing gas on the extraction of zinc and iron from ZF.

Technological advances in underground coal mining have led to a reduction in fatalities. This study demonstrated that the percentage of cumulative injuries remained largely unchanged across two decades of technological advances (1983-1984: 37%; 2003-2004: 33%). Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the average number of lost days due to cumulative injuries has increased (36±55 days and 62±82 days, respectively) which may have been due to the increased age of the work force or an increase in length of employment meaning that the mine workers injured in 2003-2004 had been exposed to ergonomic risk factors longer than those in 1983-1984. It is recommended that ergonomics processes be implemented as a means to systematically identify, prioritize, and resolve the root causes of these cumulative injuries.

Volcanic ash, although a little-used Kansas resource, is available in forty counties with estimated, reserves of more than 20 million tons. It was first produced in Kansas in the early 1900?s but not until the early 1920 is did it become an important abrasive material. Total production to date is estimated at 2 million tons, the major use being as an abrasive in scouring compounds and soaps, additional uses include ceramic glazes, an additive in cement, and a filler and stabilizer in hot mix asphalt for paving. Unrecorded tonnages have also been used in construction of black-top (macadam) roads. From 1916 through 1944, Kansas ranked first among the states in volcanic ash production; peak production was about 52, 000 tons in 1923. Since 1945, production has steadily declined, primarily because materials other than volcanic ash are now being used for abrasives; only two producers operated in 1964.

The GRATE-KILN System plant at Svappavaara, Sweden, was constructed for LKAB by Allis-Chalmers under a turnkey contract and commissioned in 1969. The plant was designed to produce iron ore pellets from magnetite concentrate at 6100 mtpd using imported fuel oil. It represented the state of the art for plants of its type at the time. Fuel rated capacity was attained within one week of start-up. Product quality, power usage, fuel consumption and machine wear were within warranty limits during sustained production thereafter. As operator skills improved and gas handling system reserve capability was utilized, the plant frequently produced acceptable product at up to 115% of design capacity. During the period 1969 to 1976, market demands increased for high-quality pellets while energy costs rose steadily. At the same time, important advances in the design of GRATE-KILN Systems were being made in other plants constructed by Allis-Chalmers.

Hong Kong’s Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) Stage I involves the provision of a system of deep tunnels for transporting to a central treatment works wastewater collected from a number of catchments around Victoria Harbour. For the SSDS Stage I works, about 24 km of tunnels have been excavated in hard rock at depths ranging from about 80 to 150 m below Victoria Harbour and the surrounding heavily developed areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong. Five tunnel boring machines(TBMs) with diameters ranging from 3.2 m to 4.3 m were used to excavate the tunnels. Tunnel excavation has been completed and tunnel linings are in progress. Major tunnelling issues such as ground stabilisation and water control encountered in the project are summarised. An overview of one of the possible future tunnel systems that might be adopted in subsequent stages of SSDS is also presented.

At the same time that computers and robotics move the shop floor toward becoming the unmanned "factory of the future" [1], they increase the need within the overall production enterprise for new types of technicians and engineering professionals [2]. Based on previous works which examined, first, the evolution of the technology of manufacturing toward the flexibly-automated factory of the future and, second, the technical- professionalization of U.S. manufacturing sectors [1,3], this paper looks briefly at the workforce of the U.S. metals industry.

Over the last fifty years, the treatment of enargite concentrates has not received much attention, primarily because of the availability of other clean concentrates suitable for processing with existing smelting and/or leaching technologies. As traditional copper ores have become scarcer, copper-arsenic ore deposits have garnered more interest. Arsenic release is a significant concern during the treatment of enargite concentrates by pyro or hydrometallurgical methods. Enargite is also very refractive in standard leaching procedures. Thus, economical treatment options for enargite concentrates are needed. Preliminary experiments have shown that the acid bake-leach process could be adapted and used for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this study, low-temperature (100-400º C) sulfuric acid baking of an enargite concentrate followed by water leaching has been evaluated. The results indicate the thermal transformation of enargite to copper sulfate happens during sulfuric acid baking, with most of the arsenic being released from the concentrate into the gas phase when baking at 400º C. The condition for maximum copper extraction (~100%) from the concentrate was found to be 400º C, a sulfuric acid concentration of 0.5 mL/g and two hours baking time. Part of the arsenic was captured in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved the presence of some arsenic in the form of claudetite (As2O3) in the baked concentrate. Acid baking of pure enargite behaved in a similar fashion.

SX operators have conducted extensive shut-downs and repairs over the years to mitigate solution leaks from failed stainless steel false floors and walls in rectangular mixersettler mix boxes. Hydrodynamic modeling using first principles and constitutive equations of fluid mechanics can inform an efficient structural redesign sufficient to eliminate the plate failures. Updated mix boxes have been performing without failure for over a decade. Given the extensive construction of the original Holmes and Narver mixer-settler design throughout the world that includes stainless steel lined rectangular primary and auxiliary mix boxes, SX operators may benefit from the approach, eliminating costly shutdowns, leaks to containment, and hazardous repairs.

The traditional approach to safety clearance monitoring and proper PPE usage in underground mines is time-consuming, costly, and susceptible to negligence. However, automated real-time monitoring can be implemented using computer vision-based approaches. This study aims to develop a system that provides timely information based on the automatic detection of proper PPE use and safety clearance in underground mines. Deep learning and a decentralized computing structure between the cloud and sensing devices (fog technology) are used. We hypothesize that a camera-based system can provide near real-time assessment of proper PPE use and verified clearance to access restricted areas in underground mines.

The mine scheduling process defines a mining sequence across the life of the mine and stipulates the amount of ore, waste, and specific blocks to be mined each year so that the highest economic return can be obtained under a number of constraints. There are a number of mine scheduling software packages available. Each claims to be the best scheduler by maximizing Net Present Value (NPV) or by minimizing overall mining costs. These mine scheduling programs follow different procedures and scheduling philosophies based on either mathematical or heuristic principles. There was no study in which the mine production scheduling procedures applied by these packages were discussed and compared. This paper evaluates four open pit mine scheduling programs recently developed and compares them in order to determine if significant differences exist among them. The same input data, which consist of a 3-D block model, an economic set of parameters, and the initial surface topography for a operating copper mine in Southern Peru, was used to test each technique. The following programs were investigated with respect to their ability to optimize the NPV for the case study. 1) M821V1 Scheduler by Mintec; 2) NPV Scheduler by Earthworks; 3) Milawa Scheduler by Whittle Programming; and, 4) Fundamental Tree Scheduling Method (FTSM) developed at the Colorado School of Mines. The results from this case study demonstrate that the scheduling software packages, Mintec, Earthworks, and Whittle obtained similar NPV’s, while FTSM scheduler gave a six percent higher NPV than the other schedulers.
