During recent years fuel consuming industries of the United States have been caught between environmental restrictions and the uncertainty of obtaining an inexpensive fuel. With the advent of the National Energy Act of 1978 there has been added impetus to switch from gas and oil to coal. For industrial furnaces and boilers that were designed to bum coal, returning to an available compliance coal might be feasible. However, furnaces and boilers designed for gas or oil cannot reasonably be converted to coal unless the coal is initially gasified. All cases, nevertheless, depend upon the availability of an adequate structured coal of a compliance composition, a challenge to the coal mining industry. The foregoing problems have contributed to the current energy-coal crisis of today's economies. It therefore would be worthwhile to capitalize on previous experiences of the mineral processing industry.

Several static tests estimate the capacity of mine waste to produce and neutralize acid and are used as tools for predicting metal-mine waste drainage quality. Various methods and their accuracies are addressed. More accurate quantification of these capacities, as well as their availability and reactivity, may be necessary to predict drainage quality from some mine wastes. Chemical analyses, x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron beam analyses are among the techniques commercially available to more accurately quantify these capacities and provide insight into their availability and reactivity.

The design of separation circuits can be a complex, labor-intensive and costly process. While the engineer?s experience along with extensive data sets and simulation are crucial tools for determining the final solution, a more fundamental approach is suitable to compare preliminary options and reduce the number of potential alternatives. In light of this need, the authors have developed the Circuit Analysis Reduction Tool (CART?). This software package relies on the fundamental principles of linear circuit analysis; however, the solution methodology has been streamlined to automatically incorporate stream splitting and unique separation performance for each unit. The resulting tool allows preliminary analysis of circuit designs without the need of detailed feed characterization. In addition to the basic analytical approach, this paper supports the veracity of the methodology with several simulated examples for various separation models.

Bleeder entries are critically important to longwall mining for the moving of supplies, personnel, and the dilution of mine air contaminants. By design, these entries must stay open for many years for ventilation. Standing supports in moderate cover bleeder entries were observed, numerically modeled, and instrumented by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The measurements of the installed borehole pressure cells (BPCs), standing support load cells and convergence meters, and roof extensometers are presented in this paper in addition to the numerical modeling results and visual observations made by the NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries. The results include the effects of multiple panels being extracted in close proximity to the instrumented site as well as over one and a half years of aging. As expected, standing supports closer to the longwall gob showed the greatest load and convergence. The roof sag appeared generally independent of the proximity to the longwall gob. The BPC readings were driven by both the proximity to the gob and the depth into the pillar. The results of this study demonstrated that the entry roof can respond independently of the pillar and standing support loading. In addition, the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The closer the mine development, pillar, or supports are to the gob, the greater the applied load due to rear abutment stress.

This study presents the results of synthesizing monolithic siliconoxynitride, Si2N2O, ceramic from a mixture composed of reclaimed silicon and natural desert sand by using the nitriding combustion synthesis method. Single-phase Si2N2O powder was prepared by the combustion of a mixture composed of silicon and pulverized sand in 3 MPa nitrogen gas. The combustion reaction completed in 2 min and the combustion temperature reached 1577°C.The as-synthesized Si2N2O powder is agglomerate of fine particles with sizes < 5 µm and has various morphologies; rod-like and irregular crystals, irregular kinking, hollow crystals and grown pseudo-hexagonal prismatic crystals. Porous Si2N2O compacts (24.5–47.1% porosities) were fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder at different calcia-alumina additives (5–20 wt%) by normal sintering at 1500°C for 1 hr in N2atmosphere.They showed superior oxidation-resistance at high temperatures up to 1500°C in an oxidizing atmosphere of Ar/O2/H2O(70/20/10 kPa).Near-full dense Si2N2O compacts were also successfully fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder with 5 wt% oxide additives by using the spark plasma sintering at 1600°C.DenseSi2N2O had good mechanical properties (18.7 GPa Vickers hardness, 3.3 MPa.m1/2fracture toughness and 363 MPa strength) and excellent chemical and oxidation resistance.

Banks frequently manage large privately owned mineral land trust accounts for estate heirs. The bank has a fiduciary obligation to follow the “Prudent Man Rule”, which requires that trust properties be managed at least as well as a prudent and knowledgeable owner could. However, banks may not have internal staff proficient at mineral property values, lease contracts, royalties, mining practices, etc. This is an opportunity for experienced geologic consultants and certified minerals appraisers to provide needed help. Items valuable to Trust managers may include: 1. Marketing privately owned mineral trust lands to mining or oil & gas firms, assuring competitive offering prices and terms; 2. Negotiating favorable new mineral lease and purchase-option contracts; 3. Monitoring progress of mining, royalty payments, land reclamation, and environmental clean-up work; 4. Balancing future mining income with later industrial, commercial or housing development, timber harvest, etc.; 5. Assuring that Depletion Allowance tax advantage is taken for actual mine royalty payments, but not for annual non-mining lease (rental) income; 6. Appraising in-ground mineral value for bank audits, estate tax valuations, and equitable property division between heirs; and 7. Serving as expert witness, representing the legal interests of the bank, trusts, and the mineral heirs in litigation. Banks do welcome reliable advice which assists them in achieving the “Prudent Man Rule” and improving mineral income to their land Trust accounts.

LOCATION AND HISTORY The Lakeshore Copper property is located on the Papago Indian Reservation approximately 30 miles South of Casa Grande, Arizona. This major porphyry type deposit was discovered by El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1966. Following an extensive diamond drilling program, El Paso invited several mining companies, including Hecla, to examine the property with a view towards participation. Hecla&apos;s examination, and the attendant feasibility studies, led to agreements, which were finalized in September 1969, whereby Hecla would acquire a 50% interest in the property, and would act as operator. The Lakeshore deposit covers an area approximately 3,000 feet in width by 6,000 feet in length. It consists of an upper zone of disseminated copper oxides, averaging approximately 100&apos; in thickness overlying a zone of disseminated copper sulfides up to 1,000 feet thick. Near the base of the disseminated ore is a blanket like zone of high grade copper sulfides, referred to as the tactite ore body. The mine is being developed to produce approximately 6,500 tons per day of oxide ore and 9,000 tons per day of sulfide ore. This represents a total daily production rate of 15,500 tons per day, which will be achieved by underground mining methods using rubbertired dieselpowered mining equipment. DEVELOPMENT LAYOUT The mine is being developed by two parallel 15° decline tunnels. The declines were collared 5,000 feet southeast of the ore body, and are being driven in a northwestery direction, to pass beneath the tactite ore zone. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling of a potential nuclear waste repository drift may be an important tool to estimate moisture redistribution caused by natural convection within the drift. To refine and support CFD techniques, a small laboratory cold-trap experiment was developed. Results from numerical modeling of the laboratory experiment show the sensitivity of the bulk air flow rate and average air temperature within the drift to several key parameters, including various boundary condition assumptions and surrounding porous media properties.

So far my consulting in industrial minerals has been confined principally to carbonate rocks,-salt, coking coal, and glass sand. Much of this work has been for companies either too small for a full-time geological staff or unaware of the value of employing one or more qualified geologists permanently. It gave me considerable personal satisfaction to see several of the latter companies employ one or two full-time geologists after the completion of a consulting contract with them. One possible reason why some companies lack the wisdom to hire geologists is that they are dominated by engineers who still subscribe to the old idea that engineers are self-sufficient in all fields. They could have learned this from their professors. I once knew a Dean of Engineering who got purple in the face when a faculty committee was discussing the financing of a broad gauged engineering project and suggestions were made that assistance be obtained from the Schools of Business and Law and from some of the science departments tie pounded the table and shouted "Engineers are trained to handle all this!" In teaching engineering geology some years ago I used to tell the class repeatedly that the course would not make them geologists, that the purpose was to teach them

Using powerful database management software, nested-field analysis and microanalysis of narratives have been made of West Virginia accident data, resulting in a new approach for targeting and prioritizing safety interventions by county, mine size, specific mine, job title, type injury, etc. and combinations of these parameters. The analyses have been useful in focusing training and discussion sessions on specific work problems, trends, conditions, and situations for targeted groups of miners. Application of the technique will be presented in this paper, along with comparisons of various mine performance measures.

A new class of polymeric dispersants for industrial minerals has been synthesized and evaluated. Currently available dispersants give initial low viscosities at high mineral loadings, however slurry viscosities can rapidly double or triple on standing over the first several days. The new dispersants give low initial viscosities that are more stable and maintain a lower viscosity for at least one month. The new dispersants are made possible by controlling the polymer molecular weight distributions during their manufacture such that essentially all of the dispersant is adsorbed onto the mineral surface, preventing depletion flocculation.

In 1999, 1,100 million short tons of coal were produced in the United States, 38 percent from the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains region. This coal has low ash content, and has sulfur content in compliance with Clean Air Act standards (U.S. Statutes at Large, 1990). The National Coal Resource Assessment for this region includes geologic, stratigraphic, palynologic, and geochemical studies and resource calculations for 18 major coal zones in the Powder River, Williston, Green River, Hanna, and Carbon Basins. Calculated resources are 660,000 million short tons. Results of the study are available in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1625-A (Fort Union Coal Assessment Team, 1999) and Open-File Report 99-376 (Flores and others, 1999) in CD-ROM format.

The innovative Soil-Cement Mixing Wall Technique, developed independently in Japan, consists of mixing in-place soils with cement grout using multi-axis augers and mixing paddles to construct overlapping soil-cement columns. The applications of overlapped soil-cement columns include cutoff walls for groundwater control and structural diaphragm walls for excavation support. The special features of this technique include water tightness, versatile strength design, and efficient installation in subsurface materials varying from clayey soils to cobbles or soft rocks. Through the introduction of two recent subway projects in Japan, this paper presents the design parameters, construction procedure, quality control and performance of soil-cement wall for excavation support and groundwater control.

More than 220,000 diamonds have been found in the United States that range from microdiamonds to 40.42 carats in weight (Table 1). Some reports suggest diamonds weighing more than 100 carats have also been found in this country, although these reports have not been verified. The source of most of the diamonds in the United States is a group of kimberlite pipes, dikes and blows in the Colorado-Wyoming State Line district and a group of lamproite pipes in the Murfreesburo, AR area. Other areas where diamonds have been found include the Great Lakes region, the Pacific Coast and the southern Appalachian Mountains. The latter two regions are generally not considered favorable for diamond deposits. This is based on exploration models. They suggest commercial diamond deposits will be restricted to kimberlites emplaced in Archean cratons and to lamproites emplaced in Proterozoic mobile belts accreted to the cratons.

The 56,000&apos; (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450&apos; (2.9 km) and 33,700&apos; (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

Economically favored Cr and Cu leaching out process from spent power plant fly ash (PPFA) had been investigated. PPFA, bearing of C, S, V, Ni, Cu and Cr, has been widely used as an assistant fuel in cement industry. Recent environmental regulation in S. Korea prohibits using PPFA as a fuel. Many researchers have also studied on extraction V and Ni from PPFA. Due to low concentration of V and Ni, 2% and 1%, respectively, economical and environmental friendly process could not be found. In this study, Cu and Cr have been removed in an economical way and which satisfied with KS Extraction Test. The rest unburned carbon, V2O5 and NiO2 in residue were found to be applicable for indoor and outdoor colored bricks or deodorant panel. Various parameters such as pH, lixiviates and time on leaching behavior were investigated in order to leach Cr and Cu remaining C, V and Ni. Introduction The issue of coal mining safety plays an important role in the United States&apos; growing dependence on coal to supply its future needs. This article will address the federal government&apos;s role, principally the US Bureau of Mines, in meeting this challenging growth and demand while reducing the social and economic costs attributed to injuries and fatalities in underground mining. Some interesting facts and projections with respect to the nation&apos;s energy picture will be discussed. This includes the distribution of its reserves and the projected role of coal in the energy and economics of the nation&apos;s future. Underground mining will continue to be an important means of providing this coal. The author will discuss how the Bureau of Mines&apos; research program addresses the problems of health and safety that grow out of the demand for more coal. Future projections First, a synopsis of salient facts and projections concerning the US&apos;s situation with respect to energy and the economy. Figure 1 depicts the relative quantities of recoverable energy reserves in the United States by their type. Most people are aware of the nation&apos;s use of oil. We hear a lot about natural gas. And we are aware of the controversy over the use of nuclear energy. But, while looking at Fig. 1, the question becomes, "Where will our fuel to meet the demand for energy in the future most certainly have to come from?" With 82% of the nation&apos;s recoverable fuel reserves being coal, the answer is irrefutable. Coal will be that source. Figure 2 is the present market for coal. It shows that 77% of the coal mined goes to supply electric utilities. Therefore, the coal industry as a whole is most sensitive to the trends and demands for electricity. It is less affected by what happens in other markets, such as export and direct industrial use. In fact, the coal industry is three times more sensitive to the electric utility market than to all other markets combined. Therefore, the trend in the demand for electricity must be examined. Electricity demand is expected to increase steadily over the next 15 years. It is projected to grow from its present 2.3 trillion kWh per year to 3.5 trillion kWh per year by the year 2000. The fuel to supply this increase in demand must come from somewhere. The question is "How much of this extra fuel will be coal?" Although the demand for electricity is predicted to increase, the demand for coal does not necessarily follow. Coal must maintain its fraction of the energy sources used for electricity generation if its demand is to increase at the same or greater rate as electricity. Except for a near-term dip in demand due to a slight increase in nuclear capacity, the domestic electric generation accruing to coal will go from 56% in 1985 to more than 60% in 2005. Thus, the predicted trend is for coal to become a larger part of the fuel mix for electric power generation. Similarly, looking at the most recent forecast for total coal consumption trends, it can be seen that for electric power generation alone, the coal industry must be able to supply an additional 316 Mt/a (348.5 million stpy) by the year 2000 (Fig. 3). It must be stressed here, though, that without significant improvements in mining safety, it can also be easily predicted that injuries and fatalities will increase in proportion to the increase in coal production. Will society consider that acceptable? This author does not believe so. Figure 4 examines the effect of coal prices on the price of electricity. The projections show that the already high proportion of fuel cost will become a greater fraction of the consumer price for electricity. Specifically in 1985, 36% of the price of electricity was the cost of the fuel. In 1995, 46% of the price of electricity will be the fuel cost. That implies that the price of coal will have an increasing influence on the consumer price for electricity. Thus, as coal is used more to generate electricity and as fuel becomes a greater

Waste materials caused by mining activities are an important environmental problem. Paste technology is a good alternative for waste management because it has many benefits in the aspects of environment, cost and safety. Disposal of process wastes in paste form is an attractive option for waste management, as it eliminates or reduces the risks associated with conventional methods. Due to the geotechnical characteristics of the paste, it is very similar to soil materials. So determining the geotechnical properties of the paste material is essential to durability of the paste. The some important geotechnical properties are compressive strength, porosity, shear strength, hydraulic conductivity, water content, consolidation, etc. In this study, the important parameters and the relation between them were investigated and obtained some results which will affect for optimum design of waste management.

The mining industry has been Australia?s major economic driver over the past decade, contributing 8% to Australia?s Gross Domestic Product and 26% of Australian Stock Exchange Market capitalisation. Australia is the world&apos;s leading exporter in coal, iron ore, alumina, lead and zinc; and second largest in gold and uranium. While driving the economy, this resource boom has also created a demand for professional and operating talent that has far outstripped the capacity of Australia?s 21 million residents. I moved to Australia some 10 years ago and have not looked back. This unique island continent with its mix of Indigenous and diverse immigrants ? many still proud of their convict ancestry ? has offered life long memories both professionally and personally.

The Mt Todd Gold mine is situated near Katherine in the Northern Territory of Australia. Commissioning of an 8 Mtpa processing facility incorporating a four stage crushing circuit, ball mills, flotation, concentrate regrinding, high rate thickening and CIL processing was commenced during late 1996. A 4.5 M tonne /annum crushing and heap leach facility was commissioned during late 1994, and was subsequently upgraded to a nominal 6 M tonne / annum circuit during 1995. Processing equipment used included primary gyratory, secondary cone and tertiary Barmac VSI crushers. Some of the features of that crushing circuit and heap leach facility were presented at the Randol Perth 95 conference by myself. The location is described as sub tropical with average climatic conditions including 1100 millimetres annual rainfall, predominantly during the December. to March wet season, and 3000 millimetres evaporation and maximum temperatures ranging from around 26 to 46 °C. The main gold occurrence at the Mt Todd site is the Batman deposit, with current published Reserves of some 60 Mt@ 1.20 g Au / tonne ( 0.0425 oz Au / ton ). The primary ore from the Batman deposit is an extremely competent greywacke and is very hard at an average Bond Ball Mill Work Index of26.5 kWhrs/ tonne. Other indicators include a Bond Impact Crush Work Index of 20 kWhrs I tonne, an Abrasion Index of 0.15 and Ultimate Compressive Strength values of 100 - 200 MPa. The main gold occurrence is very finely disseminated free gold (at an average grain size of around 5 micron) within a combination of quartz and mixed sulphide. This gold bearing component is confined to largely parallel veins ranging from 0.5 to 25mm wide within a greywacke matrix. Although the gold is essentially non­refractory, there is a strong recovery versus grindsize relationship due mainly to the liberation characteristics and the relatively low permeability of the host greywacke rock.
