"SynopsisThe separation of zirconium and hafnium is essential in the nuclear industry, since zirconium alloys for this application require hafnium concentrations of less than 100 ppm. The separation is, however, very difficult due to the numerous similarities in the chemical and physical properties of these two elements.Traditional methods for separation of zirconium and hafnium rely predominantly on wet chemical techniques, e.g. solvent extraction. In contrast to the traditional aqueous chloride systems, the AMI zirconium metal process developed by Necsa focuses on dry fluoride-based processes. Dry processes have the advantage of producing much less hazardous chemical waste.In the proposed AMI process, separation is effected by selective sublimation of the two tetrafluorides in an inert atmosphere under controlled conditions, and subsequent selective desublimation. Estimates are made for the sublimation rates of the two tetrafluorides based on the equilibrium vapour pressures. A sublimation model, based on the sublimation rates, was developed to determine if the concept of separation by sublimation and subsequent desublimation is theoretically possible.IntroductionZirconium requires several purification steps to conform to nuclear-grade specifications. Little information is available on the sublimation separation of Zr and Hf compounds, especially in the fluoride form, the majority of which deals with sublimation under vacuum conditions. On the industrial scale, only vacuum sublimation of ZrF4 has been reported. No records were found for the sublimation of ZrF4 in an inert atmosphere. Information on the sublimation rate of ZrF4 or HfF4 in an inert atmosphere is also limited. The rate is assumed to be dependent on several factors, of which temperature, area, and composition are considered the most important."

[ ] South Africa, by a wide margin, is blessed with the largest known world reserves of platinum. The optimal use of these resources for the benefit of all South Africa?s peoples is a goal shared by industry, government and all South Africans. The challenge is to grow the industry in accordance with demand growth and thus to manage a long-term stable growth pattern for PGM usage world-wide. Amplats and the South African producers are well able to meet this challenge [ ] South Africa plays a critical role in the provision of Platinum Group Metals for world markets. In fact no other country has the productive capacity nor the geological reserves to supply the world?s platinum needs. The world required some 5 million ounces of Platinum in 1997 and South Africa supplied a full 74% thereof. The second major supplier, Russia provided a further 18% of world demand, primarily as a by-product of nickel production. Amplats satisfied about 37% of total world demand followed by Impala 20% and Lonhro at 12%.

Ash fusion temperature is the temperature at which the mineral matter in coal begins to soften, flow and fuse. It is an important parameter relating to coal utilization. Optimum ash fusion temperatures derived from coal in the Witbank Coalfield region are approximately 1400°C, and higher, although temperatures above1300°C may be deemed acceptable. This study attempted to determine which factors, mineralogical or inorganic-chemical, influence variations in the ash fusion temperatures in certain coals. Coal was sampled from the Number 2 coal seam at opencast and underground workings at New Clydesdale Colliery, Witbank Coalfield, South Africa. The samples represented known low and high ash fusion temperature coal. Analyses performed included proximate analyses, calorific value determination, percentage sulphur, ash fusion temperatures, ash analyses (composition of ash), X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and petrographic studies. Results show that although a complex relationship exists between ash fusion temperature and the various geological and coal parameters, some positive correlative results were obtained. These indicate a possible relationship between low ash fusion temperatures and i) finer size fractions, ii) an increase in iron content present in the form of pyrite and iii) the form in which pyrite is present, namely cleats. High ash fusion temperatures tend to correlate with i) the absence of pyrite or ii) pyrite present as framboids.

Outsourcing? and ?sub-contracting? have become buzzwords in recent years, as SA industry becomes increasingly exposed to the global economy, and global competitiveness. In its effort to ?catch up? after years of relative isolation, there is a concerted effort to learn from global ?best practice?, in order for South African companies, and the SA economy, to become ?winners?. There seems nothing wrong with this approach at face value. Companies need to compete and be profitable if they are to remain in business. Failure will in the end mean bankruptcy, and the loss of jobs. However, if one interrogates the precise practices, and their implications for all concerned?not just shareholders and employers, but workers, communities, the environment, future generations, the national economy?then the picture can change dramatically. ?Best practice? for whom?

Application of magnetic separation was investigated for the enrichment of colemanite ores by removing the magnetic gangue fraction. The detailed XRD analysis of the ore has indicated that the gangue fraction is composed predominantly of the iron-bearing silicates such as smectite and, to a lesser extent, illite. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of the colemanite and gangue samples have proved that colemanite is diamagnetic in character whereas gangue fraction is weakly paramagnetic to allow the removal of this fraction by magnetic separation. Magnetic separation of the crushed and sized ore samples (-5 mm +75 µm) was performed using a high intensity permanent magnetic separator. Under the test conditions a colemanite concentrate (41.29 wt.% B2O3) was found to be produced from the crushed ore (30.76 wt.% B2O3) at a recovery of 96.76%. These findings suggest that magnetic separation has great potential as an alternative process for the production of a concentrate of commercially sufficient grade.

The Chambishi Metals Cobalt Plant in Zambia has recently installed a novel oxidation/precipitation pressure leach process as part of the COSAC (CObalt from Slag And Copper as by-product) Project. Aniron-cobalt-copper alloy, produced by the carbothermic reduction of slag, is atomized and pumped to the COSAC Leach Plant, where cobalt and copper are recovered as dissolved sulphate salts, andiron is rejected primarily as hematite. Cobalt and copper are subsequently recovered as cathode metal in the existing Chambish ioperation by conventional electrowinning. This paper examines the challenges faced during the design and subsequent successful commissioning of the COSAC Leach Plant. The challenges discussed include alloy handling, autoclave design, autoclave cooler design, residue liquor recovery and the water balance design. "An investigation into pillar cutting was carried out at a platinum mine on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The focus was on crush pillar design and implementation in order to ultimately improve the compliance percentage for pillar cutting. The major findings from the investigation suggest that the pillar cutting problem lies with the implementation of the design rather than the design itself. Observations of the practical issues underground that prevent good pillar cutting were made. After these issues had been identified, recommendations to rectify these problems and a few other issues identified during the investigation were provided. The recommendations are aimed at improving the pillar cutting compliance and reducing the likelihood of pillar bursts or pillar runs, which will ultimately create a safer mining environment. Six different types of quartz and quartzites used as raw materials by ferroalloy plants have been investigated with respect to their thermo mechanical properties. In order to investigate the effect of the thermal shock caused by the rapid heating of quartz when it enters the furnace, the following techniques have been used for both in situ investigations and investigations of pre-heated quartz: -Heating stage microscopy for in situ observation of heating effects. -Shock heating of quartz in an induction furnace An optical microscope-mounted heating stage was used for in situ observations of the microscopic effects of heating up to 1300 ºC. The effects of heating were observed at different temperature intervals in different samples. The main temperature intervals were below 573 ºC and above 1000 ºC. The cause of the observed effects is interpreted as fluid inclusion decrepitation for T<573 °C and structural implications (micro cracks, grain boundaries and remaining fluid inclusions) at T>1200 °C. Shock heating of the samples was carried out in an induction furnace to 1300 ºC for ten minutes. The effects of the heating were studied with different techniques such as direct observation during and directly after heating, optical microscopy and XRD. Combined transmitted and fluorescence light microscopy shows that the heated quartz show an opening of the grain boundaries and evenly distributed micro cracks that were not present in the unheated reference samples. In some of the heated samples, weak generation of cristobalite was detected by XRD.

Copper oxide ores deposits in the Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) contain at variable level cobalt oxide minerals. In contrast to copper oxide minerals which readily dissolve in the sulphuric acid solution, the cobalt oxide bearings are difficult to dissolve, especially if cobalt is present in the third oxidation state (Co2O3). This species become soluble after reduction of Co+3in Co+2. In practice, the use of reducing agent is therefore necessary in order to transform the insoluble minerals into soluble cobalt sulphate species. The following reducing agents are currently used at the Shituru plant: ferrous ions, which are present in leach solutions, pulverised copper or sodium meta bisulphite (MBS). Due to the high consumption of reducing agents (0,8 t MBS/t of solubilized Co; 1,2 t Cu/t-Co), cobalt production is expensive. The use of sulphur dioxide as reducing agent was then investigated in order to reduce operating cost. This reagent also presents the advantage of sulphuric acid production during the leaching process. It has been added in the leaching vessel (tank). From the laboratory and industrial tests, selective leaching of cobalt (78%) has been performed. The cobalt leaching kinetic depend on sulphur dioxide dosage. Dissolution of copper, iron and manganese remained very low. No emanation of SO2 gas was observed during the process.

An unprecedented expansion of the global zinc industry is currently under way. While most new projects and plant upgrades remain committed to traditional processing technologies, recent advances in zinc solvent extraction (SX) have created opportunities for new process routes for both primary and secondary materials. The first commercial plant to use zinc SX for the mainstream processing of a low-grade ore is under construction and promises to become one of the lowest cost zinc producers. Several other oxide and sulphide projects in various stages of feasibility are considering the inclusion of SX in their process flowsheet. Zinc SX has also proved advantageous in the reprocessing of secondary materials, particularly for the treatment of zinc residues and furnace dusts. This review focuses on recent installations and projects underdevelopment that feature zinc SZ as the key separation step.

Pt-Al-X alloys have shown good mechanical properties and adequate oxidation resistance. Starting from a promising Pt-Al-Cr alloy, the influence of Ni additions was investigated. After ageing finely dispersed precipitates are observed. Nb, Ta, Ti and Re increase strength when added as partial substitute for Al. Minor additions of B increase creep resistance and rupture time remarkably, owing to strengthening of the grain boundaries. The evolution of the alloy development programme as well as selected properties of the multi-component Pt-base alloys are presented.

Shovel-truck systems for loading and hauling material in open pit mines are now routinely analysed using simulation models or off-the-shelf simulation software packages, which can be very expensive for once-off or occasional use. The simulation models invariably produce different estimations of fleet sizes due to their differing estimations of cycle time. No single model or package can accurately estimate the required fleet size because the fleet operating parameters are characteristically random and dynamic. In order to improve confidence in sizing the fleet for a mining project, at least two estimation models should be used. This paper demonstrates that the Machine Repair Model can be modified and used as a model for estimating truck fleet size in an open pit shovel-truck system. The modified Machine Repair Model is first applied to a virtual open pit mine case study. The results compare favourably to output from other estimation models using the same input parameters for the virtual mine. The modified Machine Repair Model is further applied to an existing open pit coal operation, the Kwagga Section of Optimum Colliery as a case study. Again the results confirm those obtained from the virtual mine case study. It is concluded that the Machine Repair Model can be an affordable model compared to off-the-shelf generic software because it is easily modelled in Microsoft Excel, a software platform that most mines already use. The Minataur? Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) is a novel route for the production of high-purity gold using solvent extraction. Following the successful demonstration of the process on a pilot-plant scale, a full-scale 24 t/a production plant has been commissioned at Harmony Gold Mine in Virginia, Free State. The commercial implementation of this process represents not only a significant advance in gold-refining technology, but may be instrumental in initiating important changes in the legislation regulating the marketing of gold in South Africa. Gold of either 99.99% or 99.999% purity can be produced from intermediate process products having a wide range of gold contents. The process comprises oxidative leaching of the solid feed, followed by selective solvent extraction of the gold from the leach liquor to reject impurities, and precipitation of high-purity gold powder. This paper outlines the process, presents selected results of two pilot-plant trials in which 5 kg/d of high-purity gold was produced from silver-refining anode slime and gold-electrowinning cathode sludge, and provides some details of the cost benefits.

Mintek has been involved in the development of bioleach technology for many years, initially for refractory gold extraction, and more recently also for base metals extraction. Mintek, in collaboration with its Australian technology partner (BacTech), is the technology provider for the Beaconsfield refractory gold bioleach plant. At present Mintek, BacTech and Peñoles are constructing a demonstration bioleach plant for copper-zinc concentrate treatment. Bioleach liquors produced in all applications have to be neutralized. In the copper-zinc case, neutralization is required for bleeding iron from the circuit and for adjusting the pH value ahead of solvent extraction. In the refractory gold bioleach circuit, neutralization is required for producing a stable iron-arsenic residue. Some of the challenges encountered in each of these neutralization applications are discussed, and examples of results obtained are presented.

Laser coatings are used for a wide variety of applications. TiB2/Ni intermetallic matrix composite coatings were fabricated on Al-substrate by a high power Rofin Sinar Nd: YAG solid-state laser. The characterization of the coatings was carried out by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical study of the laser coatings in 3.65 per cent NaCl at room temperature revealed that with very high weight proportion of nickel the corrosion resistance of the coatings deteriorated due the presence of AlB10 phase. 50 wt per cent TiB2+50 wt per cent Ni laser coatings exhibited the highest corrosion resistance in test solution. An improved methodology is presented for assessing the economic feasibility and effectiveness of recycling industrial waste. The methodology is based on the break-even control mechanism, but at the same time provides for the introduction of new evaluation criteria such as the threshold of conditionality and the degree of ore substitution. Based on an improved analysis, it becomes possible to more precisely predict recycling efficiency. A more refined determination of the lower limit of concentration of recoverable metals, at which technogenic waste can be assigned the status of secondary raw materials and processed profitably, leads to a significant expansion of the secondary raw material base suitable for recycling. The potential for recycling manganese-containing dust from the production of ferrosilicomanganese, dehydrated sludge from the hydro separation of slags, and cake from the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide at the Chiatura mining enterprise is used as an example. It is shown that with a threshold of –24% Mn content, the highest recycling efficiency can be achieved by the production of low-phosphorus manganese slag and conversion to ferrosilicomanganese using the above waste to replace 40-60% grade III and IV manganese concentrates in the feed.

The problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures is internationally recognised and represents the single biggest expenditure in the preservation of steel reinforced concrete structures. While the corrosion protection of the reinforcing steel is no substitute for design and the placement of good quality concrete, it does provide for a viable and economical extension of structural integrity and service life in the day-to-day and practical environment in which concrete structures are constructed. The mechanism of corrosion attack and consequent deterioration of reinforced concrete structures is well understood and documented. New structures can be designed and built to withstand corrosion. However, due to short-term economical restraints, many new reinforced concrete structures continue to suffer as a result of corrosion damage, which results from the corrosion of the steel reinforcing. This paper explores the economic and practical benefits offered by the application of hot dip galvanizing as a viable means of protecting reinforcing steel concrete structures. The paper also discusses technical misconceptions that exist with respect to the application and performance provided by the use of hot dip galvanized reinforcing steel.

Today, mine backfilling has become an integral part of mining operations, both from a local and overall ground control point of view, and as regards mining techniques and environmental considerations. During the past decade, substantial research has been carried out to contribute to the better understanding of the mechanisms involved in mine backfill behaviour. This work involved analytical, experimental and numerical studies at different scales. Accordingly, this work has been aimed at developing backfill design guidelines for actual working conditions. Backfill design for deep mining conditions is complex and requires understanding of various elements. The most important of these elements are: backfill inherent strength parameters, backfill placement method, stope geometry and interaction between backfill and host rock. The mobilization of backfill strength parameters controls the backfill behaviour and thus, its failure mode. It is believed that the governing boundary conditions and backfill-rock interaction influence the backfill strength mobilization significantly. Accordingly, the interaction between backfill and host rock is an influential factor in overall backfill behaviour under applied loads. The focus of this research is to investigate the backfill-rock interaction, considering a nonlinear behaviour for both backfill and rock mass. Assuming typical stope geometry, the FLAC code was used to model the complex boundary condition associated with narrow vein mining conditions and to simulate the backfill behaviour. A comprehensive numerical study was conducted and the results obtained were compared against field observations. The analysis of findings provides qualitative results, which can be used for backfill design.
