A. W. S. Schumann The first reason for todays success lies in the very high standard which was set by our speakers today and I think that we owe a very special vote of thanks to Messrs P. M. C. Wilson, A. A. Oakes, M. J. Deats, A. C. Coetzee, R. E. Burnton and J. G. Ferguson. This, however, cannot account for the fact that there was a tremendous response even before anyone knew who was going to speak or what they were going to speak about. I suggest that the response was enthusiastic because people expected a more informal gathering with a greater opportunity for feedback, for an exchange of views and for questions and answers. The very popularity of the idea has defeated its own ends to some extent. This gathering is too big and many people must have been left with questions unanswered. Possibly one should arrange for a number of meeting places-there are many in the Chamber and the surrounding mining houses-and then have separate meetings in the morning with joint reporting session in the afternoon. Alternatively, we could have a symposium after the colloquium, using Webster's definition of a symposium as as 'a drinking party of merry fellows'. We all know that it is easy to discuss mining into the small hours. Obviously one cannot summarise todays papers and discussions, but I would like to make a few comments on technical matters and after that I would like to speak for a moment about what I see as major trends or tendencies which arise from discussions of this nature. Regarding the question of placing a village on a mine or away from a mine, I would mention that there is quite a body of literature on the adverse sociological effects on the development of children in any community in which the great majority of parents share the same occupation. It is something to be avoided if possible. We discussed the concept of the moving stockpile. If this is proved to be successful, it could save a considerable amount of money for Escom who could then avoid the construction of very large and costly staithes which are now regarded as parts of power stations. One does not see why both a moving stockpile and a staith should be necessary. By the way, speaking of Escom, I see that Mr Bob Scott is here; he has stopped pulling my leg by saying that we sell stone to Escom; perhaps someone has told him that if this is true, it must be the cheapest stone you can buy in this country. My next point relates to the use of epidiascope. It struck me again that this instrument which provides a visual image to accompany your message, can be very effective if it is properly used. These papers speak of a great deal of hard work which went into their preparation, and one really feels that the authors should have taken a few minutes more to prepare their drawings specifically for the epidiascope. There should be nothing on the drawing which is not necessary to illustrate a particular point and there should be nothing on the drawing which is not visible from the back of the hall. A. Continuous miners, and their operation at Bosjesspruit Colliery J. D. INCH*, B.Sc. (Min.), M. I. Min. E. (Visitor) A brief description is given of the main types of continuous miner and their incidence of application in South Africa. Definitions and descriptions of the design parameters and components of the main cutting head are given. together with an outline of the modifications carried out to improve machine cutting performance. An account is given of experience with the application of water infusion to suppress airborne dust during continuous-miner operations. B. The selection and performance of continuous miners at Matla Coal by J. D. STONE, B.Sc. Eng. (Min.,) M.B.L. (Graduate) The reasons for the choice of continuous miners for the development of accesses and the winning of coal in a modern underground coal mine are discussed. It is shown that, at relatively low depths, the extraction rate as well as the costs are more favourable than those of proved total extraction methods. The selection of a continuous miner is largely dictated by factors such as production rate, capital and running costs, imported content and the extent to which local content and manufacturing are to be increased, manpower requirements, seam thickness, expected floor and roof conditions, and maximum cutting height. The present inherent shortcomings of continuous miners, such as inefficient continuous transportation of coal away from the miner and the lack of an infinitely variable traction to match the sumping speed with the feasible penetration speed, are pointed out. Specific problems encountered and the methods of solving them, as well as a planned trial with a heavy-duty continuous miner, are discussed. C. Continuous mining within the Tavistock Group of collieries I. D. BRUMBY.Dip. Min. (Visitor) The Tavistock Group of collieries is situated some 25 km south of Witbank. The three collieries comprising the Group are Tavistock Colliery, Phoenix Colliery, and South Witbank Coal Mines. Continuous mining is practised to some degree at all three collieries. This system of mining was introduced at Phoenix during 1976, South Witbank during 1978, and Tavistock during 1979. For the twelve months ended June 1979, continuous mining accounted for 1,7 Mt of the 4,5 Mt hauled from underground. All the continuous miners introduced to date have been of the rotary-drum type. D. Pillar extraction at Usutu Collieries using continuous miners by c. J. BEUKES(Visitor) In 1969 Usutu Collieries began pillar extraction with conventional mechanized equipment. This was very successful, but certain disadvantages could be eliminated if continuous miners were used instead. In 1976 the first continuous miner was introduced for this purpose; this proved so successful that a second unit was introduced in 1977, and pillar extraction by conventional equipment was discontinued. By the end of 1978, 1,3 Mt had been mined from pillar extraction by continuous miners. This paper describes the method in some detail, and indicates that the operational costs are lower than for conventional bord-and-pillar mining. Methane explosions in underground coal mines are a major concern across the mining industry. After the Pike River disaster, Arnot Coal became even more aware of the explosion risk. To determine whether Arnot has adequate precautions against a methane explosion, such as the one that led to the Pike River disaster, a literature survey covering the causes of the incident and what preventative measures should have been in place was conducted. Many different methane explosion prevention methods were evaluated, as well as codes of practice. Based on the findings, Arnot?s measures to prevent conditions favourable for a methane explosion were evaluated.

The new sorting system has been developed to achieve efficient separation at low mineral content levels. The system employs high resolution X-ray sensors providing multi-energy analysis, thus giving maximal information about processed materials measurable by X-ray radiography. It makes it possible to analyse the internal structure of the particles and directly detect inclusion of minerals and metals like copper or gold. The paper describes sorting application examples for zinc, lead, copper and gold ore with low metal content below 0.1% of Cu. The sorting system still allows high efficiency analysis, quantification and removal of rock particles representing waste fraction with no metal or a negligible amount being uneconomic to process. This brings a huge advantage during pre-concentration, where almost no losses of valuable minerals in the waste fraction can be achieved. In a FeNi electric arc furnace, the physical properties of the slag (chemistry, viscosity, liquid/solid/gas ratio) are of crucial importance in controlling the efficiency of the process. In this paper, we studied the slag crystallised on the walls of a semi-industrial furnace (freeze-lining), the slag rising through the burden during foaming phenomena, and the casted slag. The freeze-lining is the layer of oxides that crystallises on the refractory wall of a furnace, protecting it from chemical and mechanical aggression. It records changes in furnace conditions (slag chemistry, temperature, oxygen fugacity), which makes it possible to observe the impact of these elements. In the high reduction test, the freezing lining is composed of magnesian olivine. Switching to a low reduction process increases the Fe content of the olivine and causes orthopyroxene to appear, making the freeze-lining mechanically and thermally weak. Thermal incidents in the furnace cause significant slag foaming. This foaming is produced by a massive crystallisation of the olivine (due to the drop in temperature), and inducing an exponential increase in viscosity, preventing the free circulation of gases. These foaming episodes are also recorded in the freeze lining and form layers rich in gas bubbles, and therefore mechanically fragile. The slag casted and cooled in a ladle allows the first steps of slag crystallisation to be studied. Olivine is the liquidus phase, with a magnesium-rich core and an iron-enriched rim, contemporaneous with the orthopyroxene phase. The habitus of these phases is very similar to that found in komatiites for the same minerals. FeNi slag is therefore an industrial analogue that is easy to study and compare to komatiites. Since 1925, xanthates have been widely used in sulfide flotation due to their low cost, ease of manufacture, and ability to float most value species. However, the industry's increasing need for safer and more selective alternatives, driven by low head grades, poor-quality, difficult-to-process ore with complex mineralogy, and stricter environmental regulations, has led to the development of Solvay's AERO® XR series of collectors. These custom-formulated products are based on greener chemistries and offer metallurgical benefits that are similar to or better than those of xanthates, without the safety concerns. Developed through Solvay's Flotation Matrix (FM) 100 approach, the XR series collectors are suitable for a wide range of applications, including the processing of Cu, Zn, and Cu-Ni, as well as the flotation of precious metals. This paper will highlight the differences between xanthates and XR series collectors, and present case studies of their successful commercial application at various global operations.

Mixed fatty acids, such as oxidised paraffin soap, are frequently used as a substitute for oleic acid in flotation of scheelite in China. Not only because it is cheaper than oleic acid, but also because it is superior in flotation performance to oleic acid. This superiority is generally attributed to the mixed fatty acids' synergistic effect. In this paper, the synergistic effect of oxidised paraffin soap was investigated. We found it mainly consists of a series of saturated fatty acid salts, with six to nineteen carbon atoms. All the contained fatty acids were classified into four groups based on their chain length to make the research work practical. Also, the groups were labelled as 1, 2, 3, and 4 in order. The research was simplified into studying the synergistic effect of four equivalent collectors, instead of fourteen fatty acids. It is justified by the fact that neighbouring fatty acids are expected to have a similar flotation performance. The synergistic effect of the four groups of fatty acids was studied by single-mineral flotation with single groups, binary mixtures, ternary mixtures, and the full component, as collector respectively. The flotation performance index and synergy value were introduced to evaluate flotation performance and synergistic effect of groups, respectively. The results show that the mixture 1+2+3 has the strongest synergy of all followed by the mixtures 1+3 and 2+3. The mixture 3+4 and 1+2, on the other hand, have negative synergy. The synergistic effect of mixtures of groups indicate that being consecutive in length and a broad range of lengths are vital for fatty acids to enhance synergy. Group 3 is fundamental for the collecting action of 733 oxidised paraffin soap in the flotation of scheelite. The fatty acid soap in group 4 is not suitable for flotation due to its low solubility. Ilmenite is the principal feedstock for producing TiO2 - used in paints, plastics and paper and the production of Ti metal. The Brahmaputra River system in Bangladesh represents a potentially new source of ilmenite concentrated within sandbar placer deposits and the current study presents results from beneficiation and characterisation studies conducted on Brahmaputra River Fe-Ti oxides. Characteristic of fluvial systems, the ilmenite concentration is low (~0.5 wt-%), however extensive annual dredging for waterway navigation provides the economic impetus to recover saleable ilmenite. The Fe-Ti oxide suite derived from magnetic fractionation comprises homogeneous ilmenite, titanohematite and hematite, although many grains exhibit complex exsolution within the (Ilm-Hem)ss series. The textural variability results in difficulty generating a pure ilmenite feedstock with the bulk concentrate typically being low in TiO2, containing 31.0 wt-%TiO2 and 62.7 wt-% (Fe2O3). Results are interpreted via an analysis of the implications for producing a commercial-grade ilmenite concentrate suitable for TiO2 production. "Electrical steels are used in motors, power generators, and transformers for electrical applications owing to their superior magnetic properties. These properties are attributed to the presence of a significant amount of silicon in the steel composition. Silicon steels are mainly grouped into two categories: grain-oriented (GO) and non-grain-oriented (NGO). The Si content of silicon steels is generally between about 0.50% and 6.5%. Therefore, silicon steels are further classified as low-, medium-, and high- Si steels. In this paper, liquid steel processing practices for certain silicon steel grades are outlined by considering a steelmaking company that integrates a basic oxygen furnace (BOF), a ladle furnace (LF), and an RHtype degassing unit (RH). Possible problems are identified, suggestions are discussed, and conclusions are drawn on the basis of real plant data. IntroductionSilicon steels are widely used in motors, power generators, and transformers for electrical applications owing to their superior magnetic properties. However, the differences in the properties and thermomechanical production of GO and NGO grades are outside the scope of this paper. In this study, liquid steel processing of certain silicon steels will be discussed. In the integrated iron and steelmaking process, converters are the primary steelmaking units that are used mainly for decarburization and removal of phosphorus, and for obtaining liquid steel with a specific chemical composition and suitable temperature for secondary steelmaking operations. Ladle furnaces are a type of ladle metallurgy station consisting of electrical and/or chemical heating facilities for adjusting the liquid steel temperature during alloying. Various types of vacuum units are used for decarburization and removal of nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulphur, depending on the metallurgical conditions of the vacuum units. In this study, an actual steel-production company is considered in which the primary steelmaking operation uses a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter with N2/Ar bottom blowing, and the secondary steelmaking operations involve (1) a ladle furnace (LF) heated by three graphite electrodes and equipped with Ar and N2 top/bottom mixing facilities, and (2) an RHtype (circulation) vacuum degassing unit equipped with a top-blowing attachment for oxygen blowing and an Ar-purging system from an up-leg snorkel."

The DC arc plasma gasifier concept is currently under development at Mintek for testing the feasibility of producing syngas from waste coal fines and dry steam. The technology is intended for the valorisation of low-grade discard coals into market-quality syngas, which may then be used for largescale electrical power generation to address current grid supply challenges in South Africa. Other potential applications include feedstock for petro-chemical plants, fuel for transportation vehicles, domestic and industrial heating, and others. The proposed concept of a DC arc plasma gasifier was developed based on a plasma torch, metallurgical-based and entrained flow coal gasifiers. The principles of design and operation of the proposed gasifier are based on the concept of the Westinghouse Plasma Corporation (WPC) gasifier where the torches are substituted by graphite electrodes from which electric arc plasmas are generated. The DC section of the gasifier will be designed considering Mintek’s experience in the sealing of the furnace as carried out in the Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process. As part of the building blocks of a full conceptual design, the feasibility of the DC arc plasma gasifier was investigated through testing and modelling of its critical elements as proof of concept. The main activities of this work included pilot scale evaluation of the arc behaviour in the presence of dry steam, modelling of the temperature distribution within the reactor and explosibility studies on three different coal dust samples. "The aim of this paper is to enhance the understanding of the nature of mining input technologies in the South African mining industry. In the context of this research, mining inputs refer to input technology into the activities in mining engineering fields, which include mining-related production activities, rock engineering, mine ventilation, and mine transportation (handling of personnel, material, broken rock, and pumping). Input technologies in supporting fields such as geology, other engineering disciplines, human resource, procurement, finance, as well as downstream fields that include metallurgy, and marketing of minerals, were disregarded.The mining input technologies were divided into 12 nodes, and data from a sample of 150 first-tier mining suppliers was analysed. It was found that, in general, there is a high local content in mining input technologies, particularly as regards technical support services, artefacts, and machine technologies. This points to the presence of mining-induced backward linkages in the South African mining industry. The majority (83%) of companies that provide input technologies into mining are located in Gauteng Province, and relatively few are found in provinces where mining is concentrated such as North-West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Free State. IntroductionSouth Africa is well endowed with minerals, with more than fifty different minerals being mined throughout the country. For this and other reasons, mining is one of the crucial pillars in the South African economy and its importance is well documented (Robinson and von Below, 1990; Creamer, 2010; Department of Mineral Resources, 2015). In 2013, South Africa was the largest global producer of chromium, ferrochrome, platinum group metals (PGMs), and vermiculite and the second largest global producer of antimony, manganese, titanium, and vanadium (Chamber of Mines of South Africa, 2014). In 2013, the mining industry contributed 6.7% to South Africa’s GDP and was the fifth largest sector in the economy, as shown in Figure 1."

Mining operations are generally reluctant to install high-cost sampling systems at operations that have been functioning for many years. The principal objection to installing appropriate equipment to extract correct and representative samples in process flows is the time and costs involved. The Theory of Sampling (TOS) provides a structured framework for identifying and quantifying the errors and bias associated with any sampling event, but this may be insufficient to initiate substantial investment in correctly designed sampling equipment. Financial losses arising from substandard sampling installations are usually disregarded because the value-add from a good quality sampling solution is invisible, but the cost is quite obvious. Depending on the needs, a less-than-perfect or fit-for-purpose sampling solution may be acceptable, provided the magnitude of sampling errors is understood and the assay results are interpreted accordingly. Categorical levels of acceptable accuracy and precision can be established depending on the sampling position in the mining value chain and the nature of the decisions to be made. The objective benefits of proposed fit-for-purpose sampling solutions should be presented to relevant decision-makers in such a way that adverse subjective decisions are countered so that appropriate solutions are implemented. Practical examples of the benefits from motivating the implementation of fit for purpose sampling solutions at sampling facilities around the world are provided.

Held on the 22nd March 1972 at Kelvin House. Four papers were presented at this colloquium, which was attended by approximately 120 people. The first paper, 'Flotation Research Work at the N.I.M. research group, University of Natal on the modelling of a Flotation Process' was presented by Dr R. P. King, the leader of the N.I.M. Research Group in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Natal. A discussion panel, under the chairmanship of Dr R. E. Robinson with Mr M. Dawson (PMC), Mr E. Roux (FOSKOR), and Dr B. K. Loveday (NIM), discussed the potential application of the theoretical work on flotation modelling to industrial processes, and alternative approaches to providing a way of control of flotation plants. The second paper, 'Fundamental Studies of the Flotation Process the Work of the National Institute) for Metallurgy', was presented by Dr N. P. Finkelstein. The discussion panel for this paper was under the chairmanship of Professor D. D. Howat,and had as its members Mr H. P. Carlisle (JCI), Professor D. le Roux (University of Pretoria), and Mr E. Rudolph (Anglo American Research Laboratories). A lively discussion on this paper ensued, with several contributions from the floor. After lunch, Mr S. K. de Kok, Assistant Consulting Metallurgist, Anglo Vaal, presented a paper on 'The Flotation of Copper and Zinc Sulphide from Prieska Ore'. The paper was discussed by a panel comprising Dr V. C. Lovell (NIM), Mr A. Gilbert (General Mining), and Dr D. Legge (Anglo Vaal), under the chairmanship of Dr L. Bushell. This discussion, in which many members of the audience participated, revolved around the difficulties associated with the production of copper and zinc concentrates and the lack of fundamental information on the behaviour of copper and zinc sulphides in flotation. The final presentati0n was a paper, 'The Recovery by Flotation of Cassiterite contained in Gravity Concentration Plant Tailings', presented by Mr E. B. Viljoen (Metallurgy Department, Goldfields South Africa Limited). The discussion, led by a panel consisting of Mr O. Tant (Goldfields Laboratories), Mr J. Levin (NIM), and Mr R. I. Shanks (NIM), under the chairmanship of Mr H. Cross (Goldfields South Africa Limited) referred particularly to the use of new reagents for the flotation of tin, with particular emphasis on the fundamental relationship between reagent composition and its ability to float this type of mineral.

Optimization of panels, haulage fleet, and waiting area involves deterministic and low-fidelity methods and experiential knowledge. The process is challenging because coal recovery and operational capabilities must be considered in the solution. The approach in this manuscript comprises the development of an integrated stochastic simulation model of a coal room-and-pillar system that addresses these challenges. The decision variables evaluated are panel width, number of shuttle cars, and change-out time (COT). The results show that the mine should implement the shortest possible COT, decreasing the cycle time and thereby increasing productivity and continuous miner (CM) utilization. The highest productivity and CM utilization for a fleet size of three shuttle cars is found in the 15-entry panel width. For the evaluated fleet sizes, the 19-entry panel width is optimal for the four and five shuttle cars. Among the three variables studied, panel width and fleet size had the most significant effects (5% increase) on the CM productivity, cycle time, and utilization.

Rock mass damage induced by mining increases the fracture frequency and joint aperture width in the pit walls and rock mass behind open pit mine slopes. The depth and intensity of this mechanical damage relative to the pre-mining state is not well understood and yet is a major factor in the development of slope stability models and operational guidelines. The induced damage can be partitioned into domains or zones. The blast damage zone is essentially a ‘free flow’ rock mass volume, which transitions quite rapidly into the excavation damage zone, which extends beyond that. In both zones, transient high in situ water pressures are often linked to unstable slope conditions. Whereas rock damage can enhance passive depressurisation in the rock mass, high infiltration rates on the other hand, as one could expect during rainstorm events, will decrease slope stability within the dilated pit rock mass, especially in the blast damage zone-excavation damage zone, by increasing pore pressures for short periods of time. Ice jacking and freshet are additional factors to consider in (sub) arctic environments and can be exacerbated by unfavorable rock fabric orientation. On a local scale, brittle deformation damage zones, in the form of faults, can contribute to slope instability, or enhanced stability because of slope depressurisation, depending on their location and orientation relative to the pit shape and the water sources. In this study, the shapes of the damage zones and their anticipated impact on infiltration and/or passive depressurisation are considered for different pit morphologies, rock mass conditions, in situ stress, and hydrogeological settings. Some unusual hydrological situations, like mining towards rivers and lakes and the potential effects on pore pressures, are also considered. This investigation has resulted in the development of a method to adjust initial hydraulic conductivity values used to estimate transient pore pressure conditions found in rock masses exposed in different pit morphologies and stress regimes as well as discontinuities’ orientation relative to open faces within the open pit mine. The changes in K values and pore pressures can then be used to determine hydrogeological influence more accurately on future pit slope stability.

Simon (until March 1972). Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of nineteen, and the standing committees held 27 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts which are attached to this report show an excess of income over expenditure of R21 519. It is very gratifying to be able to report that Council's efforts to stop the depletion of our accumulated funds are meeting with success. The most important contributors to our surplus this year are symposia and colloquia, sales of publications, Company Affiliate subscriptions and the profit on the journal. While we do not expect continued profits from all these sources in the future we do feel that we are now in the process of accumulating a substantial financial foundation. This will give the Council the necessary confidence to initiate the new developments in the activities of the Institute which are now under consideration. The decision to create a new grade of membership, Company Affiliate, is dealt with elsewhere in this report. There has been a generous initial response from companies and this is the cornerstone of our improved financial expectations. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R91 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 502. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R9 160 to RH 331, which is R2 134 in excess of the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to RH 529 compared with R23 010 a year ago. MEMBERSHIP Sixteen Fellows, twenty Members, six Graduates, nine Associates, twelve Students and twenty-four Company Affiliates were elected during the year. One Member and two Associates were reinstated. Twelve members were admitted to retired membership. Transfers: Member to Fellow, three. Graduate to Member, seven Associate to Fellow, one. ABSTRACT: Settlements above fractured crystalline rock masses are rarely observed and in the past, geotechnical engineers would not expect substantial subsidence to occur in association with a deep tunnelling project. However, recent high precision levelling measurements along the Gotthard pass road in central Switzerland, have revealed up to 12 cm of subsidence along sections that pass several hundred metres above the Gotthard highway tunnel. Large-scale consolidation resulting from tunnel drainage and pore pressure changes in the rock mass are believed to be the contributing mechanism. This paper presents results from an extensive numerical modelling study focussing on the processes responsible for this subsidence. Results derived from 2-D discontinuum (i.e. distinct-element) and continuum (i.e. finite-element) modelling show that both discrete fracture deformation (i.e. fracture closure and shear) and poro-elastic consolidation of the intact rock matrix equally contribute to the observed magnitudes and shape of the surface subsidence trough. RÉSUMÉ: Des tassements aux dessus de massifs cristallins sont rarement observés et par le passé les géotechniciens ne prévoyait pas de subsidence significative associée avec des projets de tunnel profond. Cependant, de récentes campagnes de nivellement haute précision le long de la route du Col du Gotthard (Suisse centrale), ont mis en évidence des subsidences atteignant 12 cm sur des sections passant plusieurs centaines de mètres au-dessus du tunnel routier du Gotthard. Le mécanisme invoqué pour expliquer ce phénomène est la consolidation à grande échelle due au drainage du tunnel et aux variations de pression de pore dans le massif rocheux. Cet article présente les résultats d’une modélisation numérique intensive mettant l’accent sur les processus responsables pour la subsidence. Ces résultats obtenus grâce à des modèles 2-D discontinus (p. ex. éléments distincts) et continus (p. ex. éléments finis) montrent que la déformation sur des fractures discrètes (fermeture de fractures, cisaillement) ainsi que la consolidation poro-élastique de la roche intacte contribuent également aux magnitudes et aux géométries de subsidence observée en surface. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Beachtliche Oberflächensenkungen in einem kristallinen Gebirge, deren Ursache im Vortrieb eines mehrere hundert Meter tiefgelegenen Tunnels liegt, wurden bisher nicht erwartet und beobachtet. Dennoch wurden nach dem Bau des Gotthardstrassentunnels, entlang der Gotthardpassstrasse Oberflächensenkungen mit einem Maximalbetrag von 12 cm bei der Auswertung von Präzisions-Nivellements entdeckt. Dieser Maximalbetrag wurde in einem granitischen Gneis gemessen. Die örtliche Übereinstimmung zwischen dem maximalem Senkungsbetrag und dem maximalem Wasserzufluss zum Tunnel, und die zeitliche Abfolge von Tunnelbau und auftretenden Oberflächensenkungen lassen hydromechanisch gekoppelte Prozesse als Ursache dieser Gebirgsverformungen vermuten. In dieser Arbeit werden die Ergebnisse ausgedehnter prozessorientierter numerischer Simulationen präsentiert. Resultate aus den 2-D Diskontinuum (d.h. distinct-element) und Kontinuum (d.h. finite element) Simulationen zeigen, dass beide Verformungsmechanismen, d.h. an diskreten Brüchen und der intakten Gesteinsmatrix, gleichbedeutend für die beobachteten Senkungsbeträge und der Form des Setzungstroges verantwortlich sind.
