Processing of copper-cobalt orebodies in Africa?s Copper Belt has received much recent attention with various flowsheet options being developed specifically for the refining of cobalt. The upfront leach and copper refining routes are well understood whereas the refining of cobalt is more complex, requiring numerous impurity removal steps to produce high purity metal. This paper describes an investigation into one of the possible processing steps in the refining of cobalt, namely, cobalt solvent extraction. The paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required cobalt solvent extraction feed composition. 18% (v/v) Cyanex 272 in an aliphatic diluents is used as the organic phase. The pH profiles in the various stages are evaluated in order to obtain a raffinate containing <10mg/l cobalt and with a low magnesium content reporting to the stripping section. The pH profile is also used to minimize the impurity deportment to the cobalt electrolyte. The effect of adding a pre-neutralization stage before feeding the organic phase to the extraction circuit is investigated. Zinc build-up in the stripping stages is also looked at. It is recommended for the purpose of this study that four extraction stages at an O:A ratio of 1 with a pH profile from 4.9 to 5.7 be employed. The pH is controlled with 40g/l NaOH. A pre-neutralization stage is required, where the organic phase is contacted with 10 M NaOH. Two scrubbing stages are recommended at an O:A ratio of 40, using the cobalt electrowinning advance electrolyte as the scrub liquor. Three strip stages are to be employed at an O:A ratio of 0.67.

In late 1997 a request was received to assist with determining the powered support unit (shield) load capacities for the planned 2 seam short wall. This project had a number of aspects which made it attractive to utilize numerical modelling in conjunction with other more conventional design tools in the design of the shields. Amongst these were: The 2 seam panels were to be laid out about 25 m below the previously short walled 4 seam, the 4 seam had in turn been over-mined by the 5 seam long wall, the proposed face height of the 2 seam short wall was 5.5 m while the 4 seam had been mined at 4 m. The top seam in the area (5 seam) had been mined at between 1.5 and 2.2 m high, the face conditions with about 95 m of broken material applying dead weight loading to the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden septum were hard to predict and cyclical loading due to the presence of strong sandstone bands in the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden. The basic thrust of the study was to take the known, and successful, situation (4 seam short wall) and carry out comparative modelling to enable prediction of likely 2 seam conditions. Some two dimensional aspects studied were: 5 m goaf hanging up behind shields, stresses in beams to determine likely first goaf roof span, stresses in cantilever beams to asses cyclical loading due to sandstone bands in the interburden being loaded by the overlying goaf and stresses on chain and crush pillars adjacent to the goaf edge. Three dimensional aspects that were investigated included: Load distribution along face for close goafing and 5 m goaf hang-up and load in a 1 m wide rib modelled in the position of the powered support units. From the modelling it was possible to determine the optimal shield leg capacity of the new 2 seam equipment. These outputs were used when drawing up the technical specifications for manufacture of the new equipment. The face was successfully commissioned in August 2002. Certains aspects de ce projet le rendaient intéressant pour utiliser la modélisation numérique en même temps que d’autres méthodes conventionnelles pour la conception des boucliers. Parmi ces aspects se trouvaient : Les panneaux de la couche 2 devaient être placés environ 25 m au dessous de la couche 4 courte taille ; la couche 4 avait été remplacée par la couche 5 longue taille ; la hauteur de taille proposée pour la couche 2 courte taille était 5.5 m, tandis que la couche 4 avait été exploitée à 4 m. La couche supérieure de la région (couche 5) avait été exploitée entre 1.5 et 2.2 m de hauteur ; il était difficile de prédire les conditions de taille, avec environ 95m de matériaux cassés ajoutant une charge morte à la plaque de séparation entre les couches 2 et 4 et un chargement cyclique causé par des bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau 2-4. L’idée principale de l’étude fut de prendre la situation connue et réussie (couche 4 courte taille) et de faire une modélisation comparative pour prédire les conditions probables de la couche 2. Certains des aspects à double dimension qui furent étudiés étaient : Un accrochage de remblai de 5m derrière les boucliers ; contraintes dans les poutres pour déterminer le premier intervalle probable entre remblai et toit ; contraintes dans les poutres en porte-à-faux pour évaluer le chargement cyclique causé par les bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau qui est accablé par le remblai et les contraintes sur les piliers par chaîne et d’écrasement adjacents au bord du remblai. Aspects à trois dimensions qui furent étudiés : Distribution de la charge le long de la taille pour les remblais proches et l’accrochage de remblai de 5 m et la charge dans une nervure de 1 m de large modelée dans la position des unités de soutènement mécanisées. La modélisation a permis de déterminer la capacité de portée optimale du bouclier du dispositif nouveau pour la couche 2. "In selecting a suitable method to sink a vertical shaft for underground access, a number of constraints influence the ultimate decision of where and how to develop the shaft, not least among these being safety, development and construction time, and cost. Two additional considerations stand out: these being geotechnical conditions and technology, the latter taking into account existing underground access. Assuming a project for which an existing underground excavation is available, it is tempting to build a shaft sinking project from the outset based on the raiseboring method, which has the potential to be the safest, fastest, and least expensive method provided that geotechnical conditions permit.And therein lies the rub: regardless of project time or cost constraints, when it comes to raiseboring a long (say, greater than 500 m), large diameter (greater than 4.5 m) shaft, the rock mass conditions ultimately dictate what method of shaft sinking will be feasible. Over the course of several studies for a particular project, several geotechnical analyses were carried out specifically for the purpose of developing a shaft by raiseboring. Risk analysis and experience showed that where the rock mass conditions indicated an unacceptably high risk potential, an alternative method needed to be considered, even if this meant increasing both the time and financial requirements.In this paper we present an overview of geotechnical investigation practices for shaft sinking. Decisionmaking thresholds for raiseboring or other methods of shaft sinking are discussed, including probabilities of failure, empirical rock mass classification, basic wedge failure, and back-analysis of a failed case. The design of appropriate support, and analysis of relative safety benefits for various shaft sinking methods, falls outside the scope of this work, and will be presented in a separate paper.IntroductionThe potential for rock mass failure during shaft development and construction affects whether a project is completed safely, on time and on budget. During the course of several studies to establish ventilation shafts for an underground expansion project, geotechnical analyses of rock mass stability and failure potential were carried out. The investigations were guided by the method of McCracken and Stacey (1989) together with insights from Peck and associates (Peck, 2000; Peck and Lee, 2007, 2008; Peck, Coombes, and Lee, 2011)."

Abstract: In recent years, probabilistic approach with the calculation of probability of failure instead of a factor of safety against failure is emerging in practice. The main objective of the paper is to discuss a probabilistic approach in rock slope stability analysis for Himalayan conditions. Due to the fragile geology brought about by the tectonic movements along the hill slopes, dramatic variations of the topography and intensive surface runoff during every monsoon season, serious slope failures occur frequently in Himalayan region. Slope failures have also been triggered by seismic activities. The probabilistic approach is applied to stability analysis for a road cut along the Desander back slope of the Kali Gandaki hydropower project in Nepal. It is concluded that the probability approach offers a more accurate grasp of the actual condition than any factor of safety. Zusammenfassung: In den letzten Jahren ist es mehr gewöhnlich geworden, ein stochastisches Verfahren und eine Berechnung von der Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Zusammenbruchs statt einer Berechnung von Sicherheitsfaktoren zu verwenden. Das Hauptziel dieses Artikels ist das stochastische Verfahren in Stabilitätsanalyse von Gebirghängen, welches an Himalayische Verhältnisse angewandt worden ist, zu diskutieren. Wegen der spröden Geologie die durch tektonische Bewegungen entstanden ist und den dramatischen topographischen Variationen sowie viel Oberflächenwasser während des Monsuns, kommen in der Region des Himalayas oft mehrere erhebliche Abhangszusammenbrüche vor. Abhangszusammenbruche ist auch von seismische Aktivität ausgelöst worden. Das stochastisches Verfahren ist auch benutzt worden, um die Stabilität von einem Wegschnitt in dem Desander Gebiet von dem Kali Gandaki Wasserwerk-Projekt zu analysieren. Die schlussfolgerung ist, dass die Ergebnisse eines stochastisches Verfahren die wirkliche Verhältnisse eines Abhangs besser beschreibt als der Sicherheitsfaktor. Résumé:- Ces dernières années, une approche probabiliste basée sur le calcul d’une probabilité de cassure au lieu d’un facteur de sécurité préventif d’une cassure est de plus en plus utilisée. L’objectif principal de ce papier est de discuter une approche probabiliste de la stabilité de versants rocheux en himalaya. Due à la fragile géologie causée par les mouvements tectoniques sur les versants de collines, aux dramatiques variations de topographie, ainsi qu’au lessivage intense du relief à chaque mousson, de sérieux glissements de terrains se produisent fréquemment en Himalaya. Les glissements de terrain sont aussi déclenchés par l’activité sismique. Cette approche probabiliste est appliquée aux analyses de stabilité d’une section de route le long du versant arrière Desander du projet « hydropower » du Kali Gandaki au Népal. On en conclut que l’approche probabiliste offre une estimation plus précise des conditions actuelles que n’importe quel facteur de sécurité.

"Drought conditions and the possible lack of sufficient raw water supply are a constant reminder to the Southern African diamond miner of the need to minimize raw (new) water input while maintaining or expanding mine throughput.Since water input volume is directly related to water output (loss) volume, mainly to the tailings, it is obviously beneficial to dewater the tailings as much as possible. However, this may not always be as easily achieved as first thought. Owing to the unique mineralogy of each kimberlite deposit and the unique chemical profile of each raw water source, dewatering of the slurry is not a standard process that can be applied equally across the entire diamond industry.This paper presents a first-step strategy that kimberlite diamond mine operators should consider and apply to meet and exceed their watersaving targets. Introduction A common metric for measuring water use efficiency in a metallurgical plant is the amount of raw water used per ton of head feed treated (m3/t). The metric includes all water recycled from the dewatering process and from the tailings storage facility (TSF), and the only inputs are tons of ROM ore and cubic metres of raw water make-up to replace water lost to evaporation, seepage, and lock-up at the TSF (Figure 1).The volume of new raw water available to the process is not unlimited and a maximum monthly allowance is typically set during the mine permitting process. Consequently, if the volume of water lost exceeds the volume of new water available or alternatively, in times of drought where the allowable volume is unavailable, the plant has no other option but to reduce throughput.However, if the plant operator is able reduce the volume of water lost to the TSF, the plant will have additional capacity to either increase tonnage throughput or sustain nameplate capacity during periods of severe drought. The obvious conclusion, therefore, is to reduce the volume of water lost to the tailings by improving the efficiency of the dewatering process (typically gravity thickening) simply by increasing the density of the tailings being discharged. In practice, however, the unique mineralogy of each kimberlite deposit and the chemical profile of the raw water source used imply that at some mine sites, solid/liquid separation (or settling) of tailings slurries at the dewatering process is more easily achieved than at others. In these cases, simple practical steps such as firstly improving the flocculant reagent make-up and dosing control, and secondly focusing on thickener discharge control, are the only requirements for enhancing water recovery at the dewatering circuit. At other mine sites however, solid/liquid separation of the tailings may not be achieved at all, in which case efforts to increase water recovery by improving reagent dosage and thickener control would be fruitless unless the colloidal properties of the thickener feed slurry are modified."

This article examines the stability analysis of intake tunnels of Karun III dam & power plant. The tunnels have been excavated with a 3-dimensional and fairly complicated geometry in Pabdeh weak formation rocks at Zagros region. Due to the particular excavation geometry and inapplicability of plane-strain status, the stability of these excavations has been analyzed using both the 3D elastic software Examine 3D and the 2D non-elastic software UDEC simultaneously. The geomechanical parameters have been estimated by back analyzing the measured displacements from instruments, which were installed in the tunnels, and the parameters have been used in non-elastic numerical model. The results of the analysis show that the strains occurred in surrounding rock mass are less than the allowable failure strain and that the tunnels are stable. In addition, considering the results of non-elastic 2D analysis, the areas with unstable potentiality were identified and after the instability occurred at the areas predicted by the model , it was stopped up to the allowable strain limit through installing additional support . Bei diesem Artikel handelt es sich um eine Analyse der Festigkeit der Eingangstunnel des Damms und Elektrizitätswerks “Karoon III”.Die Tunnel haben drei Dimensionen und eine sehr schwierige Form und sind in brüchigen Felsen in “Pabedeh ,in Zagrossgebirge”eingebohrt.Aufgrund besonderer Form der Bohrung wurde ihre Festigkeit durch elastische dreidimensionale Soft-ware analysiert,die gleichzeitig die drei-und zweidimensionale unelastische Soft-ware UDEC benutzt hat.Die geometrische Parameter sind mit Ausnützung der Analyse berechneter eingesetzter Versorgungen,die in Tunnel aufgebaut sind,bewertet.Und diese Parameter sind in Zahlen-Analyse benutzt.Die Ergebnisse dieser Analyse zeigen,dass die Drücke an Felsen weniger als problematischer Grad der Drücke sind und die Tunnel fest sind.Ausserdem wurde mit einem Einblick auf die Ergebnisse der unelastischen zweidimensionale Analyse die eventuellen unfesten Teile bestimmt.Nach entstandener Unfestigkeit an diesen Teilen wurde die problematischeDrücke für Aufbau mehrere Anlagen gestoppt. Cet article examine l&apos;analyse de la stabilité de tunnels de la prise de Karoun barrage III et centrale électrique. Les tunnels ont été excavés avec une 3 dimensionnel et compliqué géométrie dans Pabedeh que la formation faible balance à région Zagros équitablement. Dû à la géométrie de l&apos;excavation particulière et inapplicabilite de statut de tension plane, la stabilité de ces excavations a été analysée en utilisant les deux le 3D logiciel élastique Examen 3D et le 2D logiciel non - élastique UDEC simultanément. Les paramètres du geomechanical ont été estimés en analysant le déplacement mesuré d&apos;instruments qui ont été installés dans les tunnels et les paramètres en arrière a été utilisé dans les modèles numériques non - élastique. Les résultats de l&apos;analyse montrent que les tensions se sont produites dans masse du roc environnante est plus petit que la tension de l&apos;échec admissible et que les tunnels sont stables. De plus, les régions avec potentialité instable ont été identifiées étant donné les résultats de 2D analyse non - élastique, et après que l&apos;instabilité se soit produite aux régions prédites par le modèle, il a été arrêté jusqu&apos;à la limite de la tension admissible à travers installer du support supplémentaire.

In a benchmarking paper published in the SAIMM Journal, Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou (2008) reviewed ground control strategies to manage large deformations in underground hard rock mines. Significant differences were identified in the design and acceptable tolerance between civil and mining engineering practice for squeezing ground conditions. Variations were also noted in ground support strategies between Australian and Canadian mines. In this paper we review progress in design methodology and ground support practice since 2008, including the availability of more effective deformation monitoring, new design tools, greater access to yielding ground support elements, and better installation practices. An improved understanding of technical and practical issues associated with squeezing conditions has led to the development of ground support guidelines for a range of squeezing ground conditions in hard rock mines.

Smith in presenting his paper was that the planning aid outlined in the preprint was neither sophisticated nor complicated. However, it was a system which worked and was a very real way in which the computer was being used to assist miners, in particular, who at the present moment have very little experience in the use of computers.Mr Smith apologised for the fact that the editors of the paper had eliminated all reference to &apos;time&apos;. This was very unfortunate because the essence of the system was that it saved time, which was one of the main points made in the paper.The operations being planned by this means cover the Rokana orebody which is a stratiform body mined by open stoping.The planner has to decide how much ore to mine from each base in each time period of his plan, that is, from three to four months hence to a year ahead. Normal procedure is for the planner to have discussions with the underground manager on some of the information he requires. The sort of information needed is (i) tramming limits for each face, (ii) extraction and grade factors, (iii) the present status of mining operations so that the planner knows where to start the new plan, and, (iv) details of any other mining consider¬ations that need to be incorporated in the plan.The objective at this point is to produce an initial plan for discussion purposes. All the information required comes from one sheet per stops and shows, inter alia, the stope identifier, the length along strike, the ore tonnage, the copper and cobalt grades and, finally, the extraction and grade factors.The program itself, among many other things, checks the data for validity, compatibility, completeness and credibility and prints error messages accordingly. Output from this system is in the form of a summary of production from each face, as well as giving the figures of ore reserve depletion. This summary indicates which slopes are to be mined in this time period, the original survey grades (copper and cobalt), the estimated production grades, how much is to be mined from each stope and the copper and cobalt production accordingly."

Decision making can be defined as the selection process of the best routes from the alternatives in order to achieve a goal, and mostly involves uncertainty. Additionally, mostly qualitative variables (weak rock, massive ore deposit, etc.) are in question. Mine planning engineers often use their intuition and experience indecision making. As fuzzy set theory has been used since 1970, these uncertainties are easily evaluated in the decision-making process. Real world study is decision making under vague constraints of different importance, involving uncertain data (qualitative variables), where compromises between antagonistic criteria are allowed. This paper presents a new approach in the selection of an underground mining method based on fuzzy set theory for the Ciftalan Lignite Site located close to Istanbul in Turkey. The physical parameters such as geology and the geotechnical properties of ore, hanging and foot wall, economic effects, environmental effects, are established with field and laboratory tests together with the determination of other qualitative variables. Meanwhile, some qualitative variables dealing with the matter was described according to the view of a number of experts. Then fuzzy set theory is applied to these parameters, considering the available underground methods in order to choose the proper method. At the end of the evaluations, the room and pillar method with filling was determined as the most suitable method for the test site. "The mining operation at Namdeb’s Southern Coastal Mine (SCM) is unique. It targets gravel layers up to 30 m below sea level, which continue to dip deeper, further west, under the Atlantic Ocean. On this storm-dominated coastline, severe water seepage into mining areas, rugged orebody footwall characteristics, and highly variable resource grades all contribute to a challenging operational environment. Namdeb has a proud history of innovation, and as the mine progresses further westwards and associated technical and economic challenges increase, this innovative culture has become essential to the future of the mine. The Theory of Constraints (ToC) has been widely used at SCM, and across the mining discipline, to focus efforts on improving overall business profitability. Through analysis of the mining processes, opportunities were identified, solutions developed, and initiatives implemented with staggering results across all three mining disciplines, i.e. stripping, load and haul, and bedrock bulking and cleaning. This paper outlines the solutions adopted and the results of the ToC analysis. IntroductionSouthern Coastal Mine (SCM) is one of three Namdeb operations located in the southwestern corner of Namibia, between the Orange River in the south, the Namib Desert to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west (Figure 1). These three geographical features set the backdrop for the world’s greatest marine diamond mining placer (Badenhorst, 2003). SCM is situated along the coastline extending from the mouth of the Orange River to Chameis Bay approximately 120 km to the north. The active mining area, called Mining Area 1 (MA1) is, however, limited to very narrow strip, 30 km in length, in the south of the licence area, close to the town of Oranjemund.Namdeb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Namdeb Holdings, is a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers and the Government of Namibia. Diamonds were first discovered along the Namibian coastline in April 1908, close to the town of Luderitz, but mining operations started in the SCM mining area only in February 1929 (Schneider, 2009). Initially all Namdeb mining operations exploited massive land-based deposits, producing nearly 40 million carats from MA1 between 1920 and 1977 (Schneider, 2009) when mining targeted onshore raised beaches west of the high water line. Since 1977 however, SCM and Namdeb have developed a unique mining method to economically extract the resource which extends westward under the Atlantic Ocean."

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton&apos;s model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn&apos;t made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton&apos;s model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn&apos;t an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. Es gibt eine Menge eingewurzelter Ideen im Gebiet der Mechanik von Felsklüften, die, nach den letzten experimentellen Arbeiten von mehreren Verfassern, eine tiefe Überprüfung benötigen. Processing of copper-cobalt orebodies in Africa?s Copper Belt has received much recent attention with various flowsheet options being developed specifically for the refining of cobalt. The upfront leach and copper refining routes are well understood whereas the refining of cobalt is more complex, requiring numerous impurity removal steps to produce high purity metal. This paper describes an investigation into one of the possible processing steps in the refining of cobalt, namely, cobalt solvent extraction. The paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required cobalt solvent extraction feed composition. 18% (v/v) Cyanex 272 in an aliphatic diluent is used as the organic phase. The pH profiles in the various stages are evaluated in order to obtain a raffinate containing <10 mg/[l] cobalt and with a low magnesium content reporting to the stripping section. The pH profile is also used to minimize the impurity deportment to the cobalt electrolyte. The effect of adding a preneutralization stage before feeding the organic phase to the extraction circuit is investigated. Zinc build-up in the stripping stages is also looked at. It is recommended for the purpose of this study that four extraction stages at an O:A ratio of 1 with a pH profile from 4.9 to 5.7 be employed. The pH is controlled with 40 g/[l] NaOH. A preneutralization stage is required, where the organic phase is contacted with 10 M NaOH. Two scrubbing stages are recommended at an O:A ratio of 40, using the cobalt electrowinning advance electrolyte as the scrub liquor. Three strip stages are to be employed at an O:A ratio of 0.67.

Phosphate ore is an important strategic mineral resource in which apatite is the main valuable mineral. Flotation is the most commonly used method to separate apatite from middle-low grade phosphate rock. Selective flotation separation is based on the difference of physical and chemical properties of minerals occurring at the three interfaces of mineral/bubble/water. Surface and interface chemistry of mineral have been playing an important role in interpreting and governing its flotation phenomenon. In-situ, visualized and high-precision analytical techniques, such as Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Atomic Force Microscopy and Molecular Simulation, have been applied to explore and uncover microscopic nature of apatite flotation. Consequently, a great progress at molecular or atomic level on surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation has achieved in the past decades. In this paper, the research progress of surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation such as surface wettability, surface-charging characteristics, surface dissolution behavior, adsorption mechanisms of fatty acid collector and depressor on apatite surface were systematically reviewed. This review will be helpful for the development of more selective reagents and efficient technologies for apatite flotation. The paper deals with hydraulic transport of thin and dense slurries. Based on mathematical modelling of three-phase flow, dynamic properties of the systems for pumping of thin slurry are solved. Theoretical calculations were experimentally verified both at the testing hall and in real operation. For thin slurry (e.g. bauxite slurry), a three-chamber hydrohoist with float is used. Dense slurry (e.g. ash and water) is transported from the power plant to a deposit site by means of a three-chamber hydrohoist with sealed separator (piston).

Mining was a widespread economic activity in the African Iron Age. This paper reviews the available evidence on, the archaeological, historical, ethnological, and technological aspects of early mining in the Transvaal. A number of analyses of ores found at archaeological sites (especially at Broederstroom) are reported, and an interpretation of the analytical results is suggested. Descriptions of Iron Age copper- and tin-mining complexes, and of iron-ore workings, are given, and techniques of Iron Age mining are discussed. The evidence of gold mining in Iron Age Transvaal is examined.

ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. RESUME: Dans le sud de l’Ille du Gran Canaria (Espagne) on a détecté des couches d’argile gonflante dans l’intérieur des formations de roches volcaniques fonolitiques, à la profondeur autom des 500 m, avec épaisseur de 1 à 3 m. On a perforé deux tunnels (de longueur 1.500 m chaque un) dans cettes zones (igniumbrités et argiles gonflantes), chantier qui comenza pendant les 70’. La construction on a influencé pour des phénomènes d’expansivité et de décompression. Dans cette communication on présente les problèmes presentes, les études de chantier et théoriques realicés et l’optimisation numérique développé pour dimensionner le revêtement.

The primary factor contributing to the profitability of a platinum mine and its associated concentrator is the time taken from the first hoist of material from underground to the first batch of concentrate shipped. To minimize the time it would take to produce concentrate without stopping because of a lack of feed material a project was undertaken to integrate the mining model with a concentrator production schedule () in the most capital-effective manner. A secondary goal was to ensure detailed stockpiling requirements, as the concentrator is in an area where ?visual pollution? is to be avoided. To achieve this a dynamic stockpile model was created utilizing the mine production schedule resolved into a daily production figure. Four different concentrator development models were then proposed. The difference between the mine production and concentrator consumption was integrated over the life of the mine to provide the accumulated stockpile tonnages for both Merensky and UG2 ores. The stockpile levels were never allowed to fall below zero to prevent a situation where the concentrator was operational without feed material,. When a development option was selected, the standard metallurgical performance calculations were used to derive a concentrate production schedule, that was then used as a basis for commercial concentrate sale negotiations.

One of the most important characteristics of tabular mine stress analysis is the need to represent the complex evolution of mining face positions and the accompanying induced stress changes in the rock mass. Integration of seismic activity with numerical modelling requires flexible and efficient solution schemes in which both off-reef damage and large-scale fault slip can be effectively represented. A new approach is investigated in which the stope closure and ride variables can be found using a moving least squares estimator. Some advantages of this approach over traditional element-based tessellation schemes are identified. At the same time, shortcomings of this method are noted when the displacement discontinuity variable is approximated by a polynomial shape function. Difficulties and possible solutions to the shape function formulation near excavation edges are discussed. Une des caractéristiques les plus importantes de l’analyse des contraintes minières tabulaires est la nécessité de représenter la complexe évolution des positions du front de taille et des changements concomitants des contraintes occasionnées dans la masse rocheuse. L’intégration de l’activité sismique avec la modélisation numérique requiert des projets souples et efficaces qui permettent la représentation des dommages hors-filon et des glissements de faille à grande échelle. Une approche nouvelle est étudiée qui permet de trouver la fermeture de la taille et les variables de montage en utilisant un estimateur par les moindres carrés mobile. Certains des avantages de cette approche sur les traditionnels projets basés sur une structure en mosaïque sont identifiés. En même temps, les défauts de cette méthode sont notés lorsqu’on calcule la variable de discontinuité du déplacement approximativement par une fonction de forme polynomiale. Les difficultés et solutions possibles à la formulation de la fonction forme près des bords d’excavation sont discutés. Eine der wichtigsten Charaketeristika der taublaren Grubenspannungsanalayse ist die Notwendigkeit, die komplexe Entwicklung der Abbaupositionen und der damit verbundenen induzierten Spannungsänderungen der Gesteinsmasse neu vorzulegen. Die Integration der seismischen Tätigkeit mit einem numerischen Modell erfordert flexible und effiziente Lösungsschemata, in denen sowohl Schäden ausserhalb des Riffs als auch Verwerfungen großen Ausmaßes effektiv dargestellt werden. Ein neuer Vorstoß wird untersucht in welchem die Strossenschliessung und Schneisenvariablen unter Verwendung des Schätzwertes der kleinsten quadratischen Abweichungen (Gaussscher Schätzwert) gefunden werden. Einige Vorteile dieser Annäherung im Vergleich zu der traditionellen Element-basierenden Tessellation sind identifiziert. Gleichzeitig werden Unzulänglichkeiten dieser Methode vermerkt, wenn die Verschiebungsdiskoniuitätsvariable durch eine polynomische Formfunktion angepaßt wird. Schwierigkeiten und mögliche Lösungen zur Formfunktionsformulierung nahe Exkavationsrändern werden besprochen.
