Now more than ever, the United States must have an adequate and dependable supply of minerals to meet its defense and economic needs. A chief mission of the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Mines is to help ensure that the United States meets these needs at acceptable environmental, energy, and economic costs. A detailed description is given of radio apparatus for controlling a coincidence outfit for relative gravity measurements. This is probably of little interest, since many types of apparatus could be used. The general method employed is the interesting thing about this paper. As long ago as 1883 von Sterneck made a proposal to control two coincidence boxes with the, seine, clock, and many persons have suggested the use of radio for this purpose. In accomplishing this it would appear to the reviewer that this method is probably inferior to that used by the Marland Oil Co., but Berger and Brückner must be given the credit for important advances in the coincidence method. In their apparatus a clock at a central station actuates a relay, which operates a short-wave transmitter (40 m.). At the receiving station the amplification is accomplished at low frequencies... The signal operates a relay which moves a slitted screen in a coincidence apparatus. This screen has been improved considerably, to decrease the mean error in observing a coincidence. As usual, a telescope is used to observe the flashes of light. It has a scale in its focal plane and positions of successive flashes are easily read off and recorded by a second observer. This makes possible' a: higher accuracy in determining the exact instant at which coincidence would have occurred at the zero point on this scale. This method obviously depends on the constance of the mechanical and electrical lag inn both sending and receiving apparatus, and may be adversely criticized from this standpoint. -- A. E. Ruark.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a pulse counting system with improved energy resolution and having dual channels to process pulses at different rates and a pulse pileup detector for channel selection. Pulse input is delayed until the detector determines if any pulse is so closely followed by a second pulse as to constitute pulse pileup. If no pulse pileup is detected, the slower channel is selected; this clips the pulse to a wide pulse width to retain good energy resolution. If pulse pileup is predicted, the fast channel, with correspondingly shorter pulse width, is selected to improve resolution with respect to time. Output of the two channels is transmitted to a pulse height analyzer for interpretation. The pulse processing system can process count rates above 300,000 counts per second with little loss in energy resolution.

The Bureau of Mines has designed and constructed an experimental coke oven, using a commercial oven as a model where practicable. Because the rate of carbonization is important in determining the quality of the coke produced and may affect the "mount of pressure developed during carbonization, particular attention was given to those elements of the design that govern the heat transfer to the charge. The new oven deviates in design from most existing test ovens in that the charge is full width (17 inches), the heating walls ore constructed of 4-1/2-inch silica brick, and zoned, heat-input arrangements compensate for heat losses at the ends, top, and bottom of the charge. This report describes the oven, which was designed by H. S. Auvil and installed under his direction, at the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., while he was supervising, engineer, Coke Section. It gives the results of a limited number of carbonizing tests. These results indicate that the main objective in designing and building this oven, that off duplicating commerical, slot-oven carbonizing conditions, has been accomplished; if coke-discharge conditions simulate commercial-oven conditions, the cokes from the experimental oven arc very similar to oven coke, in soma tests being fully as close is duplicate tests from a Angle batch of coke.

The reduction zone of the iron blast furnace is represented by a mathematical model of the chemical reactions and heat transfer that occurs between gas and solids during the deoxidation of iron oxide. The model consists of a set of equations and an algorithm whereby the equations may be solved to give the temperature and composition of gas and solids at any position in the reaction zone and at any time after a specified initial state. The model is applied to the special case in which ferric oxide is reduced by graphitic carbon and carbon monoxide produced by burning carbon in dry air. The rate of reduction, carbon consumption and maximum temperature are shown as functions of the temperature and rate of flow of the incoming reducing gas and external heat loss. The model of the reduction zone is the essential part of a general mathematical model for simulation of the iron blast furnace. The simulation model will serve as a research tool to be used in conjunction with an experimental or operating furnace. After the simulation model has been correlated with the real furnace, it is proposed that further experimentation be done mostly with the model. The real furnace will then be operated primarily to test and confirm the model.

It is outlined more definitely by geologists however, as that area underlain by the south half of the Permian Salt Basin4/ and includes Scurry, Mitchell, Sterling, Howard, Glasscock, Reagan, Crockett, Upton, Midland, Martin, Gaines, Andrews, rotor, Crane, Pecos, Ward, Winkler, and Loving Counties in Texas, and.. Lea and Eddy Counties in New Mexico. The oil fields of the area, of which more than 70 have been discovered, are shown in fire 1. Approximately 4,200 producing oil wells have been drilled in these fields. Oil has been produced from limestones and dolomites of Permian age in most of the fields in the West Texas Permian Basin. Some of the fields produced oil from sandstone beds above the limestone, and in two fields production has been found below the limestone in formations of Ordovician age.

Appendix A is an abridged extract of the report prepared by the Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Society of Idaho, and presents the results of their one-year study to evaluate the feasibility of disposing mill tailings by landfill construction. Appendix B describes the field and laboratory testing program completed by RDM to assess the effectiveness of a soil (slimes) liner as a means of seepage control to reduce the introduction of contaminants into the local ground water regime. Appendix C presents a summary of a thesis by Lawrence Martin on the analysis of the acid production potential of mill tailings, and the results of geotechnical testing of mill tailings completed by ROM. Appendix D describes potential landfill sites identified within the study area, the development of these sites to meet the present needs of the mining industry and the future requirements of the community is described. Appendix E summarizes the main legislation impacting on tailings disposal. Appendix F discusses the environmental and socio-economic factors that should be considered.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the recovery of alumina by hydrochloric acid leaching of calcined kaolinitic clay . Bench- scale studies indicated that horizontal belt filtration was a pprraaccttiiccaall method for separating the siliceous residue from aluminum chloride liquor generated in the leaching step . Miniplant -scale continuous testing was performed to evaluate the filter circuits and to compare filtration response of different calcined kaolin feed materials and of different agitatorbaffle designs in the leaching reactors . Soluble alumina recovery with a single filter ranged from 94 pct with minus 10 -mesh feed more than 96 pct with minus 35-mesh or misted feed . Process advantages were confirmed for the calcined misted kaolin feed material prepared by a Bureau-developed misting process . With two filters in series , an overall filtration rate of 100 lb solids /hr.ft - 2 of filter area was attained with a soluble alumina recovery of more than 99 pct . More than 99.5 pct alumina recovery was obtained with a thickener and a two - filter circuit for either the minus 35-mesh or the misted feed . Modifications in leaching reactor design made to decrease particle- toparticle attrition were successful and significantly increased filtration rates and decreased flocculant requirements .

Instrumented handles or dynamometers are widely used to measure hand forces and/or the biodynamic response of hand-arm system. To study hand-transmitted vibration exposure, six generations of instrument handles were constructed or initially developed by researchers in ECTB/HELD/NIOSH. This presentation provided a summary of these handles. Their basic characteristics, limitations, and usefulness are described, which may help their appropriate applications and further improvements. Six Designs of Instrumented Handles Handle 1: The conceptual design is recommended in ISO 10819 (1996)1 for glove test. The grip force is measured by detecting bending strains on a measuring beam in the handle. A special handle fixture was designed to connect the handle to a shaker. Except the screws, the handle and fixture were made from aluminum. Handle 2: The design is based on the principle of shear strain measurement.2-3 Both grip and push forces can be measured simultaneously using this handle. This handle was directly designed for a simulated vibrating tool. Handle 3: This design is basically composed of a handle base, a measuring cap, and two charge-based sensors (Kistler 9212) sandwiched between the base and cap. The handle was also made from aluminum. The fixture for Handle 1 was also used with this handle. This generation of handle has three different handle diameters (30, 40, and 50mm).4 Handle 4: This design is an improvement from Handle 3. The handle fixture was totally redesigned and it was much stiffer than the previous one. The aluminum measuring cap was replaced with a magnesium cap. Handle 5: The basic structure of this handle is the same as that for Handle 3. However, the piezoelectric sensors were replaced with two strain gage based sensors (Interface SML-50). Handle 6: This handle includes two measuring caps, four piezoelectric sensors, and a handle centre base. The handle fixture was the same as that with Handle 4. Methods for Handle Examinations The static and dynamic characterizations were performed using the methods reported by Dong et al.5-6 Results and Discussion Handle 1: The static force measurement depended on the hand grip location on the handle. Its natural frequency was less than 200 Hz.5,6 Because the transmissibility of gloves may not vary significantly with the applied grip force, this handle may be acceptable for glove test. However, the force measurements with this handle may not be reliable. Handle 2: The static force measured with this handle was insensitive to the hand acting location. However, when the handle was vibrating, the force signals could be totally distorted. For this reason, it was not used for vibration studies.

Annoyance, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain have been reported during prolonged exposures to propulsion-generated vibration in military propeller aircraft1. The objective of this study was to determine the vibration mitigation properties of selected seat cushions and the effects of occupant seating posture during exposure to higher frequency multi-axis vibration associated with military propeller aircraft. Methods A Navy E-2C Hawkeye crew seat was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). Six seat pan cushion configurations were tested during exposure to an E-2C vibration signal collected in the field1. Seat pan cushions 1 – 5 were used with the original E-2C seat back cushion. Cushion configuration 6 included seat pan cushion 5 with a prototype seat back cushion. Triaxial accelerometer pads were mounted onto the seat pan and seat back cushions to measure the vibration entering the human. Data were collected for seven subjects seated upright with their backs in contact with the seat (back-on) and not in contact with the seat (back-off). Spectral analysis techniques were used to analyze data at the two dominant frequencies associated with the propulsion system (propeller rotation frequency (PRF) ~18.5 Hz, and blade passage frequency (BPF) ~73.5 Hz). Overall accelerations were also calculated between 1 and 80 Hz. Vibration Total Values (VTVs) were calculated using the weighted seat pan and seat back (back-on only) accelerations and compared to the comfort reactions given in ISO 2631-1: 19972. Results In general, the highest accelerations observed at the seat pan occurred in the fore-and-aft (X) direction at both the PRF and the BPF for all cushions and both postures. The most pronounced effect was at the BPF in the X direction, where all configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations than configuration 1 (original E-2C cushion) with the back-on posture. Configuration 5 was the exception with the back-off posture (Fig. 1A, Repeated Measures ANOVA, P<0.05). The most pronounced effect of posture occurred at the PRF in the X direction, where all cushion configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations with the back-off posture (Fig. 1B). All configurations except configuration 2 showed similar VTVs as compared to Configuration 1 (Fig. 2, P<0.05). Configuration 2 tended to show the lowest weighted acceleration levels. As part of the Demand Evaluation Program of the Bureau of Mines to determine future needs for minerals, a study was instituted to develop and describe a methodology for approaching the problem of substitution between mineral commodities and between mineral commodities and other materials. The report comprises three sections: A review of general factors relative to substitution, a case study of the effect of substitution on zinc die-casting markets in recent years, and a general methodology for reviewing materials substitution with specific emphasis derived from reviewing substitution in the domestic zinc die-casting markets.

To determine the potentialities of nickel as a substitute for cobalt in catalysts for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, RESULTS The maximum oil yields obtained in bench-scale equipment were as follows: Using 100N1:20Mn:100 kaolin:200 diatomaceous earth catalyst, a maximum yield of 133.8 cm.3/m.3 of pure CO+2H2 was obtained from one pass of the feed gas, With a nickel:cobalt mixed catalyst (Ni:Co - 3:7) having the composition 100(Ni+Co):8MgO: 5Th02:200 diatomaceous earth, a maximum of 172.2 cm.3/m.3 of pure C0+2H2 was obtained.

This report describes the dropping - mercury electrode , its use in analysis , and the procedure of the Health Division of the Bureau of Mines in determining lead , cadmium , and zinc . The dropping - mercury electrode or polarograph is an electrolytic device , one electrode of which consists of mercury issuing in small drops from a capillary tube . Such electrodes have been in existence for more than 50 years, but they were not used for analytical purposes until about 1922.6/ Developments since have been rapid , especially in Czechoslovakia , Germany , Italy, and Japan and more recently in the United States . A recent bibliography / contains references to, 825 articles issued from 1903 through 1940. In 1939 Kolthoff and Lingane presented the first comprehensive critical review, in English , of the device and its use in analysis . They have recently issued a book on the same subject. Similar information also is included in a recent book10/ by Kolthoff and Laitinen . Much of the information in this and the two following sections on this device and its use in analysis was obtained from these three publications . The use of the dropping - mercury electrode in analysis is based upon the fact that the kind and amount of electro - reducible and electro - oxidizable constituents in solution can be determined from the current -voltage relationships revealed by this electrode or electrolytic device .

With the ever-increasing demand for energy in all forms, electrical energy generated from geothermal resources could become an important energy source in the next few decades. Geothermal fluids, which contain appreciable quantities of dissolved salts and gases, are generally corrosive to materials of construction. Since data on corrosion of materials in geothermal brines is limited, the literature was surveyed through February 1972 to obtain a compilation of information on corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys, copper and copper-base alloys, carbon steel and cast iron, stainless steels, chromium-iron alloys, nickel-and cobalt-base alloys, and titanium in heated brines including sea water.

Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced ; although it is well -known that there are large deposits of low - grade ore in the United States , the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore is depleted through inability to obtain adequate supplies from foreign sources . Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot - plant investigations designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines . This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program . The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series , Report of Investigations 3606 , Manganese Investigations 1. Concentration of Manganese Ores from the Drum Mountain District, Utah, by S. R. Zimmerley, J. D. Vincent , and C. H. Schack . Other reports will be published as the work progresses .

This paper describing the inclined cut-and-fill, and the semishrinkage methods of mining at the Campbell mine of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co. at Warren, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of fines on mining methods, practices and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The major portion of the production from the Bisbee mines of the company is mined by these methods. The total average yearly production for the last two years has been 493,612 tons of 5 per cent copper ore. The average employment in the mining department eras 940 men. With the exception of a small tonnage mined for the high iron and sulphur content, the ore is direct-smelting and is mined for its copper con¬tent and associated gold and silver values.

The first steps in combating a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. If the ventilation system and dust collector are operating properly, then other dust controls such as water sprays and conveyor belt scrapers must be upgraded. For tunnels in the design stage, recommended air quantities are provided. FINDING THE DUST SOURCE AND LOOKING FOR VENTILATION MALFUNCTIONS [The first steps in fighting a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. Without knowing the exact source, efforts to reduce dust are hit-and-miss (mostly miss).] Taking samples to pinpoint the dust source. In tunnels with high levels of airborne dust, the first task is to pinpoint where the dust enters the airstream. Most dust originates from rock breakage at the tunnel face, but the location where this dust enters the airstream can vary. Dust can leak from behind the TBM face shield, from gaps in the ventilation duct, or from a mal-functioning dust collector. It can be entrained into the air from the muck on a moving conveyor belt. It can even be shaken loose from the underside of the belt as it passes over the idlers. As a start, to locate the dust source, dust samples and air quantity measurements should be taken at the following locations:

"N-acetyl-beta(B)-D-glucosaminidase is a N-acetyl-beta((B)-D-glucosaminidase enzyme se¬creted by alveolar macrophages in response to phagocytosis of particulate material. Alveolar macrophages participate in the degradation and fibrosis of pulmonary tissue that results in pneumoconiosis. Known quantities of four characterized respirable dusts were bronchoscopically placed into the right caudal lung lobe of macaque monkeys. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples were collected from dust-exposed right lung and unexposed left lung of the same individuals at 2-week intervals for 12 weeks after dust instillation. The samples were tested for N-acetyl-B-D-glucosaminidase activity to determine if the enzyme levels could serve as an indicator of pulmonary injury induced by generic coal dusts when compared to known fibrogenic and nuisance dusts. Installation of generic quartz, anthracite, or TiO2 dusts produced significant elevations of enzyme activity and increased numbers of macrophages in the dust-exposed lobes. Elevations in enzymatic activity and macrophage numbers were greatest in response to generic quartz dust. These results suggest that quantitative levels of N-acetyl-B-D-glucosaminidase activity may be a useful indicator of acute and chronic lung injury following exposure to fibrogenic and nonfibrogenic dusts.IntroductionCoal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) is an occupational pulmonary disease associated with the inhalation of coal mine dust. An important external factor in the development of CWP is the composition of the respirable coal mine dust. A cause-and-effect relationship exists between coal mine dust and CWP, but it has not been shown that exposure to generic coal dusts will cause CWP [12]. Numerous immunological, biochemical, and cellular changes occur in CWP; however, in this study, only N-acetyl-beta(B)-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase), protein, and alveolar macrophages (AM) will be examined [7, 32, 33]."
