This report gives the results of analyzing three groups of crude shale oils by the Bureau of Mines procedure:4/ (1) Oils produced by standard Fischer assay determinations on oil shales from Brazil (Paraiba Valley) and the United States (Colorado); (2) oils produced from Brazilian shale by different retorting methods; and (3) oils from high-temperature retorting of Colorado oil shale in the Entrained Solids retort. It is the second in a series presenting data obtained by analyzing crude shale oils from various sources. The series furnishes information on the general characteristics and compositions of a wide variety of shale oils. Use of a standard analytical method on all samples facilitates comparison of different oils. The 18 oil samples analyzed in this project comprised 3 from assays of Brazilian and Colorado oil shales in the Fischer retort, 9 obtained by processing Brazilian shale in various other units, and 6 from entrained solids retorting of Colorado shale at 1,000° to 1,500° F. The crude oils from Brazilian shale contained about half as much nitrogen as the Colorado oils. Properties of the Fischer assay oils from Colorado shales agreed with some data that relate grade of the oil shale with properties of the crude oil from the Fischer assay. Comparison of results from Fischer assays of oils from the foreign and domestic shales shows that the oil from Brazilian shale contains more low-boiling material and less residuum than either of the two from Colorado shale. This fact is reflected in lower specific gravity, viscosity, and carbon-residue values for the Brazilian oil. Retorting Brazilian shale in the Entrained Solids unit at 1,120° F. produced an oil whose boiling range was generally lower than the boiling ranges of oils obtained by processing in three other retorts at conventional temperatures. The quality of crude oils from high-temperature retorting of Colorado shale in the Entrained Solids process varies with retorting temperature. As the temperature is raised within the range 1,000° to 1,500° F., the amount of the naphtha fraction in the crude oil increases to about 35 percent and the aromaticity to 98 percent.

The purpose of this study is to develop designs to facilitate and accelerate auger rotation stoppage (and auger rotation start up so as to promote auger disengagement during auger miner repositioning) and to provide a time delay and warning signal prior to auger start up to permit any miner s near the augers to get away from the augers before they start rotating. In the underground coal mines in the U.S., there are four auger miners that are currently in use. They are the Jeffrey 100L (see Figure 1-1) and 100M (see Figure 1-2), and the Wilcox WCM and the MK20A (see Figure 1-3).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating methods and technology that may improve safety and production when applied to existing mining machines. Toward those goals, the Bureau has developed navigation systems that provide machine positional information while in the production area. This research has been limited in the past because the Bureau had only one type of mining machine to do experiments. Addressing this problem, the Bureau, along with Carnegie Mellon University, has developed a generic vehicle emulator, in the form of a wheeled vehicle with an onboard computer, known as the Locomotion Emulator, that provides a software-selectable vehicle emulation package. Preliminary testing by the Bureau has shown that the emulator can accurately imitate the maneuvers of the software selected vehicle type. Now the Bureau can test their navigation systems on different vehicle types without having to procure each of the vehicles. This report completely describes the emulator as well as all the modes in which it can be operated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has conducted research to improve the nondestructive testing (NDT) of wire hoist ropes. Losses in the diameter of a wire hoist rope are used as one criterion for judging when a rope should be replaced. Losses are determined by periodically measuring the rope diameter and comparing this measurement with the original measured diameter; when the diameter reaches a specified minimum at any point along its length, the rope must be retired. Generally, these measurements are made at randomly selected locations along the length of the rope, using a hand caliper. To provide more accurate measurements and to allow measurements to be taken continuously along the length of a hoist rope, an optical diameter-monitoring system was built for the USBM under contract. Continuous measurements are preferable because, when combined with continuous electro-magnetic NDT results, they can indicate whether losses in metallic cross-sectional area originate from external wear or internal wear and corrosion. Tests of the system showed that the instrument met specifications when measuring wire rope at low rope speeds but was inaccurate at speeds over about 30 m/min (100 ft/min). This report describes the prototype system, presents the results of the test program, and describes the capabilities of the system.

"This report presents the physical properties and related geological and petrographic data of some 84 rock types from operating mines, quarries, or blasting research test sites. These fundamental rock data were collected as a quantitative approach to underground mining problems, blasting research, or other related studies; however, the data are equally applicable to any problem wherein rock characteristics are important factors. Stress-strain curves are given where available, and the standardized procedure for determining elastic constants from static tension tests is described. Computed (laboratory) and measured (field) free-medium velocities are compared in those instances where such data are available. A chart is given showing both the optimum and minimum number of test specimens for the various core sizes employed in the Bureau of Mines standardized physical-property tests. Rock-type, geographical, and geological indexes are included to aid the reader in locating physical-property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical-property reports.INTROD'OCTI ONThis report presents the physical properties of 84 rock types tested from 16 different projects (sections 37-52). The United States Bureau of Mines was created by an act of Congress in 1910 as a governmental agency to work , on a national scale , toward reducing the huge annual loss of life in the production and processing of the Nation's minerals . From 1906 to 1910 , inclusive , nearly 2,500 miners lost their lives in 84 major explosion disasters , and more than 13,000 suffered fatal injuries from all causes in the coal mines of the United States . Also , conditions in the metal and nonmetal mines were proportionately hazardous during this period , and the total loss of life in all mines and quarries exceeded 3,000 annually and approximately 250,000 workers suffered serious injuries . Under these conditions it is readily understandable why Congress took notice of this " high cost of mining" , and from the investigations and hearings of the day emerged the Bureau of Mines charged with the prevention of accidents and the preservation of the health of all those engaged in the mineral industry; this has continued to be a most important part of the work of the Bureau . Throughout its existence the Bureau of Mines has had no legal authority of enforcement , except during war years , when enforcement necessary to the national security was given to it . The Bureau believes that persuasion , with factual evidence , is the proper and best way to obtain compliance with the safety suggestions made by its engineers and scientists . There is no panacea for accidents , nor will any single " approach " , instill safety consciousness in all workers , and without it accidents will occur --and occur again . To persuade men to work safely, numerous forms of appeal are required to reach the various temperaments of workers in many types of mines operating under diverse conditions .

Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a technique to grow metallic fibers from a sulfide mineral. In this research, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) was made sulfur deficient, and the remaining sulfur partitioned to the iron in the mineral to liberate metallic copper, or to the copper to liberate metallic iron. The metals formed on the surface as fibers and in the interior as spherical particles. Fiber growth is very fast. Lengths of 3 to 4 cm form in a matter of minutes, and the diameter of individual fibers is less than 1 µm. The mechanism of fiber growth is explained, and the reactions are reversible as predicted. Copper fibers can be made to grow from the surface at 400° C or to dissolve back onto the solid surface and be replaced by iron fibers at 625° C. Growth and dissolution can also be controlled to form copper/iron duplex fibers.

Although the technique of diamond drilling was developed nearly 80 years ago, the use of this process as an aid to mining and other fields of engineering has increased greatly during the last decade , primarily as a result of the development of the cast -set bit , which now largely replaces the hand - set types , and of the use of bort instead of carbons . Since this transition to cast - set bits and bort diamond , many papers ( 1-14 ) have been written on the application of diamond drilling to various engineering problems . These papers contain , besides specification of the problems , some information on the labor and bit costs and a few data on drilling technique . These data , however , are subject to restricted interpretation owing to the large number of variables , which are not controlled in field drilling . Only one paper has come to the attention of the authors , namely , that by Sundberg and Lindqvist ( 16) , which reported a study of diamond drilling under controlled conditions . This paper was written early in the transition period, and the data and conclusions presented therein have had , without a doubt, considerable influence on the development of presentday diamond bits and In view of the fact that during the last 10 years thrilling procedure . have been new developments in diamond bits. and new applications of diamond drilling , a general program of research has been inaugurated to study the problems resulting from these changes .

The thermodynamic data presented in the literature for zirconium compounds are incomplete. Among the compounds for which adequate data are Zacking are zirconium fluoride and sulfate. This paper reports experimental heat-content values determined by the Bureau of Mines for these two zirconium salts throughout the temperature range of 273° to 1,200° K. No crystalline transformations were found in the two compounds investigated, and neither of the compounds melted over the temperature range studied. MATERIALS TESTED The Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Oak Ridge, Tenn., supplied the two zirconium salts used in this investigation. The zirconium fluoride was high- purity reactor grade material. The zirconium sulfate contained between 0.01 and 0.10 percent hafnium and calcium, and other elements in concentrations below 0.01 percent, A spectrographic analysis of the two compounds is given in table 1. Before use the compounds were dried at 400° C. for several hours to removed adsorbed moisture.

Operators of construction equipment perform various duties at work that expose them to a variety of risk factors that may lead to health problems. A few of the health hazards among operators of construction equipment are: (a) whole-body vibration, (b) awkward postural requirements (including static sitting), (c) dust, (d) noise, (e) temperature extremes, and (f) shift work. It has been suggested that operating engineers (OEs) are exposed to two important risk factors for the development of musculoskeletal disorders: whole-body vibration and non-neutral body postures. Method: This review evaluates selected papers that have studied exposure to whole-body vibration and awkward posture among operators of mobile equipment. There have been only few studies that have specifically examined exposure of these risk factors among operators of construction equipment. Thus other studies from related industry and equipment were reviewed as applicable. Conclusion: In order to better understand whole-body vibration and postural stress among OEs, it is recommended that future studies are needed in evaluating these risk factors among OEs.

In 1987 Wyoming became the largest coal producing state in the country. The state is known for its extensive coal resources and extremely thick coal seams. Wyoming's coal reserves total about 69.3 billion tons, or 14.2 percent of the U.S. coal reserve. Coal seams range generally from 10 to 80 feet in thickness, although one seam is 220 feet thick. The coal-bearing areas of Wyoming underlie approximately 41 percent of the state's total land area. Wyoming's coal ranges from lignite to high volatile bituminous. Most of the coal produced is subbituminous from the Powder River coal region near Gillette. The presence of coal in Wyoming was discovered before 1834 on the Belle Fourche River. The state's first mine opened in Carbon County in 1865, and with the completion of the trans- continental railroad, the demand for coal increased. Currently approximately 80 percent of Wyoming's coal production is shipped out-of-state to meet the growing demand for low- sulfur coal to fuel electric generating plants. Wyoming received conditional regulatory approval November 26, 1980. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 14, 1983.

ackleg rock drills are widely used in the mining industry and are known to generate high levels of hand-arm vibration which contribute to the development of the hand-arm vibration syndrome for exposed miners.1-3 To reduce the vibration levels, a prototype of an antivibration handle was developed as part of a previous study.4 To provide some bench marking for this handle prototype and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. As the current ISO 8662 series of standards could not apply directly to this type of tool, there was a need to design and validate a test bench to evaluate the vibration emission values of jackleg drills, while taking into account the conditions specific to the operation of this type of tool. Methods A test bench including an energy absorber, was developed for testing jackleg drills based on the ISO 8662-3 standard 5. The energy absorber was bolted to a 3300 kg concrete block to ensure tool stability. A pictorial view of the device is given in Figure 1. For validation purposes, acceleration measurements at the handle of a conventional jackleg drill were taken simultaneously along the three axes (xh, yh and zh) in an underground rock drilling operation as well as on the test bench. The handle accelerations were measured for three different jackleg angles (13º, 28º and 43º) determined with respect to the floor. Moreover, each measurement was repeated at least three times to asses the data repeatability. [ ] Results As a preliminary validation of the test bench, Figure 2 provides a comparison of the frequency weighted rms acceleration spectrum measured along the zh-axis, for both underground drilling and operation on the test bench (28º jackleg angle in both cases). It is shown that the vibration measured on the handle of a jackleg drill operating on the test bench is representative of that recorded during typical rock drilling operations, despite the fact that some harmonics of the percussion frequencies are generated with a higher amplitude on the test bench. This report presents computer instructions for calculating the performance of three-phase flow of gas, oil, and water. The calculated results for an illustrative example are presented. The example is the waterflood of a reservoir containing free gas in the reservoir as a result of the partial depletion of the oil by the expansion of the gas initially in solution. The flood pattern for the example is a 5-spot.

Develop a mobile manipulator that one person can use to lift and maneuver 50- to 600-pound loads. It can be used in maintenance shops and mines to reduce lifting accidents (Figure 1 and 2). Background Lifting heavy items is one of the leading causes of injury in the workplace. Mine Safety and Health Administration statistics showed that, in 2004, back injuries accounted for over 20% of all injuries (1,699 cases) and resulted in 110,000 lost days of work. Forty-one percent of those injuries resulted from materials-handling or maintenance activities.1 In addition to back injuries, lifting injuries include hernias, ruptures, sprains, and strains resulting from losing control of the item being lifted. Factors associated with accidents are weight of the item being lifted, awkward postures, inadequate handholds, and the working environment itself. High accident rates were noted when lifting items that ranged from 50 to 600 pounds, particularly in tight working quarters where maneuverability was critical. Research indicated that a mobile lifting arm would eliminate many lifting accidents in environments where other lifting devices (fork lifts, overhead cranes, mobile A-frames) would not be practical. NIOSH has built a first-generation mobile manipulator unit designed to be used on hard, level floors such as in a shop. The complexity of motion, number of moving parts, compact design, and design constraints of the manipulator required advanced computer-aided design work (Figure 3). As a result of the design work, thirty-eight claims are included in the patent applications. NIOSH will be conducting field trails and working with manufacturers to put the manipulator into industrial use.

From time to time the Bureau of Mines has issued publications dealing with the various classes of explosion-proof mining machinery that have been tested and approved as permissible for use in mines having atmospheres that may become inflammable by reason of the inadvertent presence of gas or dust. These publications are confined almost entirely to description of the features contributing directly or indirectly to the prevention of explosion or shock hazards, and are intended to give inspectors, safety engineers, and others already familiar with the general safety requirements more detailed information on the safety features of the design of a particular machine. As a background for papers describing permissible machines and to avoid the necessity of duplicating descriptions of methods of conducting investigations and tests of such machinery, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, was pub¬lished in 1929. Three bulletins giving detailed descriptions of the three most numerous types of machines have been issued, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotive and Power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 392, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment.

Sand and gravel mines were the largest mining sector, comprising 48.2% of all mining operations. ? Sand and gravel mines were found throughout all 50 states and Puerto Rico.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report is intended to assist coal mine operators in the selection of longwall supports by providing advanced guidelines for performance testing and standardized test documentation to facilitate support comparisons. These advanced guidelines culminate in a series of proposed tests to evaluate (1) support resistance characteristics, (2) stiffness characteristics, (3) leg mechanics, (4) stability, (5) load transfer mechanics, and (6) structural integrity. The Bureau has conducted extensive studies on shield mechanics to identify boundary conditions that induce loading in support components, which is often not included in current testing techniques. This report discusses influential parameters that affect support behavior and provides insight into how components are loaded and what conditions produce the most severe loading. Testing philosophies and techniques in both active and static frames are discussed. Proper methods for determining support resistance are described and instrumentation requirements for advanced performance testing are provided.

Overall mineral industry productive activity in Europe increased in 1965, following general upward trends in gross national product and total industrial production4 recorded. The gross national product of non-Communist Europe in market prices in 1965 was estimated at $572 billion and that of Communist Europe at $409 billion. However, the extractive sectors of the mineral industries generally did not fare as well as the processing sectors. In fact, a number of countries recorded lower production levels in this sector in 1965 than in 1964 and most countries had a lower growth rate in extractive industry output than in overall industrial output. Among the non-Communist nations of Europe, a general decline in coal production and lower levels of iron ore output in France, West Germany, and Luxembourg contributed significantly to the smaller growth rates or declines in extractive indexes. Where higher indexes were registered, this generally resulted from the performance of the petroleum and natural gas industry; exceptions were Greece, Norway, and Sweden. The decline recorded for Czechoslovakia was attributable entirely to poorer performance by that nation's coal industry.
