THIS REPORT by the Federal Bureau of Mines presents data on water-supply wells used by waterflood operators in North Texas and shows the distribution of permeable source sediments. Averages of well characteristics, including static fluid levels, working fluid levels, net thicknesses, producing rates, and depths, are presented and discussed. Essentially all water used in waterflooding is mineralized water from consolidated sediments. This study is concerned with the geology and distribution of these mineralized source sediments, whereas previous work in this area was predominantly a study of shallow sources of potable water. Tables, isopachous maps, and electric-log cross sections are included to describe the several source aquifers. In general, water-producing capacity increases with depth of the sediments. Wells completed in Cretaceous sediments 82 to 600 feet deep yield 50 to 600 barrels of water daily, whereas those completed in Pennsylvanian sediments 360 to 4,110 feet deep yield 100 to 7,000 barrels daily. Although deeper formations are used where oil and water are produced conjunctively and where large withdrawal rates are required, insufficient well data prevented mapping of deeper formations.

The successful expansion of crude oil production begun in late 1977, led to promising development of the nonfuel minerals sector. Although actual production of nonfuel minerals was limited both in variety and in percentage of output on a world scale, the potential for expansion with a rapidly developing infrastructure was significant. The energy base was expanding with construction of two new hydroelectric powerplants in addition to the existing plant near Edea. The Song Loulou plant will have a 240-megawatt capacity, and a hydroelectric plant under construction in the northern part of the country by mainland China will have 72 megawatts of installed capacity. Inflation of between 15% and 20% resulted in a real gross domestic product (GDP) of $2.8 billion2 in fiscal year 1980 (July 31 to June 1), up 6% from that of the previous fiscal year. Petroleum became the leading export item in terms of value, surpassing coffee and cocoa exports. Mineral exports as a whole increased eightfold in value, mainly because of oil sales. Oil exports also caused a reduction in the trade deficit by nearly one-third, and the Government expected its 1980-81 budget to be balanced at $1.17 billion. The Port of Douala accounted for about 8 million tons of cargo, or 93% of total maritime traffic for Cameroon. Expansion plans for the port call for an initial increase to 5 million tons, and a cargo handling capacity of 7.5 million tons in 1985 and 10 million tons by 1990. The Port of Victoria will gain importance with the startup of an oil refinery. The country's third seaport at Kribi was used solely for timber shipments, and capacity at the Port was to triple by 1981. The Government operated its own shipping line with six oceangoing freighters. France was the dominant trading partner, accounting for 25%

This information circular describes methods used in mining inclined beds of phosphate rock in mines operated by San Francisco Chemical Co. in Rich County, Utah. The mines are on the western flank of the Crawford Mountains, a short, narrow range in northern Utah near the Idaho-Wyoming corner (fig. 1). The western front of the range is a conspicuous wall of folded and faulted sedimentary rocks that rises abruptly 300 to 600 feet above the floor of the adjacent Bear River Valley. Rex Peak, highest point in the range, is approximately 8,000 feet above sea level. The area surrounding the mines is sparsely populated. Randolph, the county seat of Rich County, has a population of 650. It is 10 miles southwest of the mines by road and the only town in their vicinity.

The local geology, the lack of recorded mining activity, and our field investigation and associated sampling indicate a low potential for mineral resources. Claim records and the literature review failed to show any lode or heavy mineral placer mining claim locations that are definitely in the area or anomalous mineral concentrations in the study area. Field investigations revealed no claims, prospects, or mineralized areas.

To determine the critical air velocity for preventing smoke rollback, diesel-fuel fire experiments were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s Safety Research Coal Mine. Such information is necessary for preplanning and implementation of ventilation changes during mine fire fighting and rescue operations. The fire intensity varied from 50 to 300 kW depending on the fuel tray area. Airflow in the 2-m- (6.6-ft-) high, 2.9-m- (9.5-ft-) wide coal mine entry was regulated during the course of each experiment. The airflow was measured upwind from the fire as an average over the entry cross-section with an ultrasonic airflow sensor and was recorded dynamically with a mine monitoring system. The extent of smoke reversal was monitored with light-obscuration monitors, ionization smoke sensors and visual observations. Experimental results for the critical air velocity for smoke reversal as a function of fire intensity compared very well with model predictions based upon a computational fluid dynamics fire dynamics simulator.

The Bureau of Mines examined the Bear Canyon RARE II area in 1982. The area has no identified mineral deposits. The few claims that were located in the study area are devoid of any workings. No concentrations of economic minerals were found in the samples taken. There are no mineral, geothermal, or oil and gas leases in the area; the nearest oil well is 10 mi (16 km) east. The nearest mining operation was the Ruby Gold Placer worked in 1914, 7 mi (11 km) southeast (Hart, 1966, p. 45); the Pliocene Paso Robles Formation which contained the gold does not extend into the area. SETTING The Bear Canyon RARE II area covers 19.7 sq mi (51 sq km) or 12,600 acres (1500 ha) in west-central California. It lies in the Santa Lucia Range 10 mi (16 km) southwest of King City and adjoins the southeast side of the Ventana Wilderness. It is 10 mi (16 km) from the Pacific Ocean. Primary access is by the San Antonio River road on the Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, which parallels the area's southern border. Further access to the area's interior is by jeep and foot trails.

For several years the Klukwan deposit near Haines, Alaska, has attracted interest as a potential source of iron. Limited field and laboratory investigation has indicated that the deposit contains a large amount of Iron that is recoverable as high-grade concentrate. This report summarizes the results of laboratory beneficiation testing of the Klukwan ore, as represented by six samples submitted to the Alaska Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Juneau, Alaska, Iron is present in the ore as a fine-grained magnetite associated with a pyroxenite type basic rock.. Satisfactory magnetic-separation procedures were developed for the production of concentrates assaying more than 60 percent Fe and 2 to 4 percent Ti02. During the investigation many data were obtained and compiled, but for convenience and clarity data of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed; only the more pertinent test results are discussed in detail.

The primary objective of the research was to grow aluminum borate whiskers or fibers and to determine their properties . Molten salt bath and vapor deposition methods were used for synthesis . Whiskers exceeding 25 mm in length were grown . The best results were obtained by vapor deposition and most of the data presented were determined on whiskers produced by this method of synthesis . Three different aluminum borate compositions ( 4.8A1203 B₂03 , 3.8A1203 B203 , and 2.5A120, B203 ) were identified by X- ray and chemical analyses . The aluminum borates 4.8A1203 B20, X- ray diffraction pattern was indexed . Optical data were obtained on the three aluminum borates . In addition the following whisker properties and growth factors were determined : ideal atmospheric dewpoint for vapor deposition method , near 65 ° F ; temperature range of whisker formation , 1,000 ° to 1,400 ° C for the molten bath method of synthesis , > 1,000 ° to < 1,400 ° C for the vapor deposition method ; whisker growth rates by the vapor deposition method , maximum 12 mm per hour ; raw material vaporization , 50 to 60 percent of the fluoride lost in 1 hour ; tensile strength , maximum obtained 174,162 psi ; melting points , ranged from 1,675 ° to 1,795 ° C.

This paper describes the pumping operations at the Ajax, Cresson, and Vindicator dines in the Cripple Creek mining district of Colorado during the summer of 1936. At that time the three mines wore pumping 6,500 gallons of water per minute into the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. Cripple Creek is the most important gold district in the State; it has yielded gold valued at over $365,000,000. The mines engaged in pumping are among the largest producing properties in the district. 1. INTRODUCTION In the early 1980s, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center required that a large reverberation acoustic facility be constructed. This facility was designed to determine the sound power level emissions of mining equipment, especially continuous miners and jumbo drills. A contract for a conceptual design of a reverberation chamber was awarded to Wyle Laboratories of Huntsville, AL, which had extensive experience in the design, construction, and accreditation of acoustical reverberation chambers. The following standards were referenced as guidelines for the design of the chamber: ANSI S1.31-1980, “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Broadband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms” and ANSI S1.32-1980: “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Discrete-Frequency and Narrowband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms.” Specific requested criteria included that the room be large enough to accommodate typically large mining equipment and that there be adequate acoustical modal density in the frequency range of interest. It was also required that the room dimensions would support broadband acoustical measurements down to the 100 Hz third octave band. With the closing of the Bureau of Mines in 1996, this reverberation chamber lay dormant for a number of years. However, this facility is now part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). One of NIOSH’s missions is to decrease noise induced hearing loss among the nation’s mineworkers. To this end, PRL researchers are refurbishing and instrumenting this reverberation chamber to facilitate assessment of the various engineering controls being developed to decrease the sound power level emissions of mining equipment. Early on, this work has sought to bring the chamber up to the level of ISO 3743-21 standard for engineering grade measurements for broad-band noise, with a longer range goal of improving the lab to meet the requirements of ISO 37412standard for broadband precision grade measurements. 2. DESIGN OF THE REVERBERATION CHAMBER The nominal room dimensions are 18.3 meters long by 10.3 meters wide with a height of 6.7 meters. The chamber volume is 1,286 cubic meters. These dimensions are important, as few reverberation facilities are large enough to test typically huge mining equipment. The floor is poured concrete with a sealer to make it acoustically reflective. The walls are built of hollow concrete block, 16 inches long x 8 inches high by 12inches thick. "ABSTRACTIn exothermic and endothermic catalytic reactions, control of the temperature is of utmost importance. Basic calculations are developed for determining catalyst volumes of various types of reactors that give particular temperature distributions, and the individual designs are compared.INTRODUCTIONA narrow range of permissible operating temperatures characterizes many, catalytic reactions, and yields of the desired product are reduced sharply if operating temperatures fall outside of this optimum range. In order to achieve close temperature control, reactors with internal heat exchange have been developed in which thin layers of catalyst are located between cooling surfaces.The temperature distribution for an exothermic reaction in such a thin catalyst layer is shown in figure 1. Reactive gases flow downward through the catalyst section, which is 2so wide. It is assumed that a constant amount of heat is generated per unit of bulk catalyst volume, and that this heat is entirely removed through the walls. Consequently, except for a short section at the entrance of the reactor, the heat of reaction is not available for raising the temperature of the gases. Thus, at all points equidistant from the axis, the temperature is the same throughout the entire reactor. At the middle of the gas stream, the temperature is designated as uo. Traveling radially from this point, the temperature decreases because of the removal of heat through the walls and reaches, in the vicinity of the cooling surface, the value u1. Over a relatively narrow zone of width, b, the temperature falls to the value u2 at the cooling surface. Because inadequate data are available on heat-transfer coefficients for a gas flowing through a porous bed, and also because the narrow zone, b, is probably without effect on the reaction by virtue of its low temperature, the temperature drop in this zone at the cooling wall was disregarded. The following calculations were made on the basis of the temperature drop (u0 - u1) resulting from heat conduction within the main body of the catalyst bed only."

Heflin, a town with a population of approximately 1,700, is the nearest shipping point for freight and express. It is on the Southern Railway, between Birmingham and Atlanta. A rural mail route passes within quarter of a mile of the mine. Paved reads from Heflin lead to Atlanta, Birmingham, and Montgomery. The country Toads leading from Heflin are well-maintained but are practically inaccessible during inclement weather. The road crossing the property within a hundred yards of the mine needs grading and repairing (see fig. 1)."

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski County, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the eighth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is no followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations at those holes show on figure 13 in volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs at the drill holes. Many at the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and gra.de. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each halt township is given with the discussion covering that area.

During 1983, Ecuador&apos;s gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by a reported 3.3% in real terms, the second consecutive decline in the economy after more than a decade of growth generated mainly by petroleum export revenues. The slowdown was due, in part, to the effects of the world recession, lower foreign demand for oil, depressed world oil prices, and reduced demand and prices for Ecuador&apos;s traditional agricultural exports. Inflation accelerated to an estimated 55% annual rate. The sucre was devalued in March, for the second time in less than a 12-month period, by 27% after remaining unchanged during the previous decade. In addition, continuous adjustments were made every weekday, effectively devaluing the sucre another 30% by yearend. Ecuador&apos;s production of crude petroleum increased almost 12% in 1983 compared with that of 1982. Average daily production was 237,100 barrels per day (bbl/d), up from 211,300 bbl/d in 1982.

Advanced technology, including automation and computerized information systems, is being adopted in mining at an ever-increasing rate to improve safety and productivity and to decrease overall costs. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report focuses on the human factors issues related to advanced technology. Among the significant facts discovered were the following: Experts studying tile design adoption, and implementation of new technology have stated repeatedly that human factors specialists should be involved from the early planning stages, through design and fabrication, and up to and during production, since human factors has been consistently identified as the biggest obstacle to the efficient utilization of new technology. Also, middle management is generally the greatest obstacle to the adoption of advanced technology, this technology can give rise to worker alienation, boredom, stress, job insecurity, and a sense of isolation; training most of the present work force is more cost effective than hiring new workers; workers are willing to accept new technology if they are given a voice in its implementation; the social and the technical systems should be jointly optimized; and with the intro¬duction of advanced technology, the cognitive or mental, rather than the physical, aspects of human-machine interaction must be emphasized.

This report describes a computer program that is used for the calculation of the coordinates and elevations of subsidence survey pins located by intersection. This program was developed for the Federal Bureau of Mines by the Numerical Analysis Laboratory, University of Arizona. These calculations, although relatively simple, are both tedious and time-consuming when computed with a desk calculator and trigonometric tables. In this survey, a large number of pins were surveyed repeatedly, and it was evident that both time and money could be saved by using a digital computer.

The purpose of the work covered by this contract is to develop a means of designing splice connectors which will significantly improve mine trailing cable splice performance. A brief discussion on splice problems is presented as an introductory means and substantiates the need for the development and test programs outlined in this report. Because of the empirical nature of this effort, time has been devoted to explaining the derivations of the test procedures used. Special attention is given to the splice flexing machine which served as the backbone of the test program. In order to familiarize persons with connector terminology, a section is devoted to a glossary of pertinent terms. Various types of cable joints are also defined. The major effort is a connector design parameter study. Utilizing the optimum parameters developed along with the suggested design procedure outlined in Appendix I should result in significantly improved splice performance and thus meet the objectives of this contract. A field test program was instituted for the purpose of insuring adaptability of connector design and associated installation tooling along with a field performance study. During the course of work, other significant factors affecting splice performance were uncovered. Although not covered by the scope of this contract, a brief discussion is presented for the purpose of stimulating interest in what is considered other fruitful areas for improved splice performance.

"INTRODUCTION Information on the gaseous products from the detonation of explosives has been obtained in two ways. In the first, the atmosphere in mines is analyzed after blasting, and in the second, the gases found after detonating an explosive in a testing apparatus are analyzed. The Bureau of Mines, in a cooperative research 3/ that compared data obtained in the field with those obtained in the testing station, showed that the results were not in entire agreement. The production of carbon monoxide was found to be governed chiefly by the oxygen balance of the explosive, but the production of oxides of nitrogen did not change in so simple a manner. Because of the increasing interest in correlations between the composition of the explosive and the production of toxic gases, it seemed desirable to continue the investigation.PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONAs field tests are both time consuming and expensive and as field results are affected by factors that are not always under control of or clearly evaluated by the operator, the purpose of this investigation is to develop a testing-station procedure that will reproduce the gaseous products quantitatively under known conditions analogous to those that may be expected in the field. In addition, the factors affecting the formation of toxic gases, particularly oxides of nitrogen, will be studied,"

Objective To develop safety training tools for mine safety and health trainers that can be used for both new-miner training and annual refresher training. Background For the past 3 years, NIOSH has been developing training materials for mine safety trainers in response to gaps identified during stakeholder meetings. Most materials have been directed to the hazards of underground mines, but the recent passage of Part 46 of CFR 30 required new-miner and annual refresher training in aggregate operations. One result was the identification of another audience needing basic information about safety in mining. Trainers characterized trainees in this segment of the industry primarily as young males, many of whom had little work experience. Approach Training specialists from the Arizona State Mine Inspector’s Office approached NIOSH researchers early in2002 about the possibility of a collaborative project to develop safety training materials for new trainees in aggregate operations. A preliminary search of MSHA accident statistics identified over a dozen common hazards that could be targeted in a training video. A storyline was developed for review by safety specialists in the aggregate industry, and a script was written to cover the selected hazards. Although the target audience was primarily new hires, the finished video was also to be relevant to more experienced workers.
