Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. Static water level recovers if sufficient recharge is available and well performance is improved.

Lower accident rates were the outstanding feature. of the second annual sand and gravel safety competition conducted in 1930 by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the National Sand and Gravel Association. Both the frequency and, severity rates for accidents were greatly reduced as compared with those shown by the first year's contest, that for 1929. Three times as many plants were enrolled, and the number of man-hours of work represented wad more than doubled. Seventy-six sand-and-gravel plants, situated in 20 States, participated in the competition, as compared with 26 plants, located in 13 States, in the year before. The number of man-hours of employment, which indicated the amount of exposure to occupational hazards, was 4,915,592 an increase of more than 100 per cent over, the previous year's total of 2.259,572 hours. The frequents of accidents declined from 74.4 per million hours for all plants enrolled in the first year's contest to 42.7 per million man-hours for all plants enrolled in 1930. The accident-severity rate was reduced from 9.7 days of disability per thousand man-hours of exposure in 1929 to 5.9 days of disability per thousand man-hours of exposure in 1930.

Much interest has been shown recently in the possible utilization of dolomite as a source of magnesium metal, a large production of which is deemed essential for national defense. As a result, many inquiries have been received by the Bureau of Mines as to sources of dolomite. This report has been prepared primarily to augment the Bureau's present published information on the occurrence of high-grade dolomite deposits in the United States. To supplement such data, the report also defines dolomite and related rocks and describes their properties and uses. The uses are covered in some detail in Information Circular 6524 entitled "Utilization of Dolomite and High-Magnesium Limestone," published in 1931 but now out of print. All essential data on uses contained in that report have been incorporated herein, and. have: been supplemented by data developed during subsequent years. The object of this paper . is to make known the superior classification accomplished in a hydraulic classifier designed to make use of principles determined by recent research ... The details of the design , the results of preliminary research , and the final testing are given . The classifier of the new design shown in figure 1 and another one like it are in operation as concentration classifiers in a Birmingham iron- ore mill recovering 4 tons per hour of concentrates from table middling that ` otherwise would require regrinding and retabling . The four factors that contribute to the successful operation of these classifiers are ( 1 ) a teeter column of small diameter , ( 2 ) use of an open - bottom tooter column classifier with a periodic pincer instead of the usual type , which terminates in a vortex, ( 3 ) a sorting chamber under separate hydraulic control , and ( 4 ) a teeter column of more than the usual depth . · At the outset it must be stated positively what the authors mean by hydraulic classification : They mean the reconstruction of a multimineral ground product into fractions graded with respect to size , so that cach fraction has the heavy mineral segregated in the fine sizes and the light mineral segregated in the coarse sizes . This definition presupposes that in multiplespigot classification the low specific gravity minerals are carried beyond the first cells to the later ones . The reader must take into account that , from the standpoint of classification , " ores " may be divided into two types , represented - by the following : ( 1 ) Joplin flint - blende ores , which , because of the hardness of the flint and the softness of the blonde , yield upon comminution a product that already has the essence of classification ; and ( 2 ) Birmingham Big Seam iron oros , which contain " easily shelled - out " sca sand and , upon reduction to about 10 mesh , yield a heterogeneous mixture in which the size analyses of the respective " floats " and " sinks " arc almost identical .

The increasing use of Diesel engines for operating equipment on trunk-line railroads and for power-plant units has stimulated interest in the use of Diesel engines for other lines of work, among which is the possibility of substituting Diesel locomotives for trolley locomotives for mines. The possibility of developing Diesel locomotives for duty in American mines is not as remote as it might seem, particularly in view of the fact that locomotives of this type are already used in considerable numbers in European mines. A study of Diesel locomotives in Europe is contained in Report of Investigations 3320, Diesel Mine Locomotives - Development and Use in European Coal Mines, by George S. Rice and F. E. Harris.

This report summarizes work performed under Phase I of USBM Contract No. H0366024, Noise Reduction of Jumbo Mounted Percussive Drills. Four drills -Gardner-Denver D93LAR and DH123 and Ingersoll-Rand 0475 and VL120 models were measured at the two manufacturers? test sites; data are given in terms of characteristic noise and vibration levels. A survey of percussive rock drill users is reported. The rationale for the choice of a demonstration drill, the Gardner-Denver DH123, is given and a desired noise reduction goal is established.

The Boston Consolidated mine is situated in the Bingham mining district, Salt Lake County; Utah (fig. 1). The property has had a noteworthy production of cupriferous, gold-bearing, pyritic ore in addition to lead ore. The Bureau of Mines established a diamond-drilling development project on the property in September 1943 with the primary objective of determining the continuity of a mineralized zone in the Commercial limestone below and to the northeast of the 800-foot level (fig.2). Examination of the geologic feature at the property previous to drilling indicated that the mineralized limestone horizon would continue belay the 800-foot level, but with a flatter dip than disclosed above this level. During the project period, 36 holes totaling 4,001 feet were drilled from underground stations outlining the zone below the 800-foot level (figs. 2 and 3).

"The fifth annual National Safety Competition conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines to determine the best safety records at mines and quarries during the calendar year 1929 has been concluded, and the general results of the contest are presented herewith. To the winner in each of the five groups into which the contestants were divided there has been awarded the bronze trophy 'Sentinels of. Safety,' donated by the Explosives Engineer magazine. The trophy for bituminous coal mines was won by a mine in Alabama; that for metal mines by an iron-ore mine in Michigan; that for nonmetallic mineral mines by a salt mine in New York; that for quarries and open-cut mines went to a limestone quarry in Michigan;. the trophy provided for anthracite mines was, of course, won by a mine in Pennsylvania, as all of the anthracite mines participating in the contest are situated in that State.Winners of the trophies were selected by a committee of sward in accordance with rules governing the contest and on the basis of accident records furnished by the various companies to the Bureau of Mines. These records were summarized by the bureau and the results submitted to the committee. Members of the committee are W. H. Cameron, managing director of the National Safety Council. William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor; James F. Callbreath, secretary of the American Mining Congress; T. T. Read, Vinton professor of mining of Columbia University and editor of 'Mining and Metallurgy'; C. B. Huntress, executive secretary of the National Coal Association; A. J., Curtis, assistant to the general manager of the Portland Cement Association; A. T. Goldbeck, director of the engineering bureau of the National Crushed Stone Association.Thirty-four States were represented in the l29 contest. Among the plants which participated were 68 bituminous coal mines, 29 anthracite mines, 54 metal mines, 19 nonmetallic mineral mines, all of the foregoing being underground mines, and 141 quarries or open-cut mines. A total of 106,533,006 man-hours of work was reported by all of the companies. Accidents during the year numbered 7,008 and represented a period of disability equal to 986,306 man-days. Hence the accident-severity rate for all plants combined represented 9.3 man-days of disability for each thousand man-hours of exposure to hazard. Similarly, the combined accident-frequency rate for all plants showed that 66.3 accidents occurred for every million man-hours of exposure to hazard. Both of these rates indicated an improvement over the combined rates for all plants in the previous year's contest. The reduction in the accident-severity rate centered chiefly in the metal mine group, though all except the quarry and open-cut mine group shared in the reduction; the improvement in the accident-frequency rate was in all croups except anthracite and metal, the rate for the former having increased while that of the latter remained unchanged."

More than 50,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and probably about the same quantity of anthracite are cleaned annually in the United States by wet methods. The water, fine coal, and impurities from the water used for washing ordinarily are recovered by moans of various forms of settling tanks. Settling and clarification may be hastened markedly, thereby greatly increasing the capacity of clarification equipment already installed, by the addition of substances to the washery water that cause the fine particles in suspension to agglomerate and thus settle more rapidly. This phenomenon, although well known and applied in other fields, has been used at only a few coal washeries in the United States. It is widely employed, however, as an aid in the recovery or disposal of fine coal or impurities, as a means of preventing, stream pollution, and to enable reuse of washery water at many plants in Europe. Pioneering work in the United States has been done principally by two companies -- the Pittsburgh Coal Co., in Pennsylvania, 6/ and the Pacific Coast Coal Co., in Washington.

"Button" type ore from the Cason mine, Batesville, Ark., can be up-graded to plus-40-percent manganese by mineral-dressing procedures. A simple process including gravity concentration and. magnetic separation yielded more than 50-percent recovery of concentrates containing 38.1 to 40.6 percent manganese. These values in turn could be raised to 41.4 and 42.8 percent, respectively, upon sintering to conform to size specifications. The Bureau of Mines in the past has surveyed and tested many manganese ores and prospects in an endeavor to alleviate the shortage of manganese. The present period of emergency again emphasizes the strategic position of the metal, and manganese investigative work is being stressed to find new ore bodies and to apply newer beneficiation techniques to the known deposits.

The Bureau of Mines observed two different types of longwall mining; the advancing longwall method and the retreating longwall method at seven bituminous coal mines located in five of the coal producing states. In two mines using the advancing face method, the coal faces were abandoned because of roof failures and poor production. In the other five mines using the retreating method, roof control was good as was production. The success of longwall mining depends on good roof control and good production. The use of self-advancing hydraulic roof supports, such as Westfalia, Dowty, and Wanheim props along with Westfalia coal planers and the Anderton and Eickhoff shearer-loaders have been a factor in recent successes.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the Human Factors in Mining Search System (HFMSS), a computerized information retrieval system that provides relevant human factors information from journal articles, research reports, seminars, conferences, etc. in terms of 19 mining-related categories. It is the only existing data base that stresses all of the areas of human factors as applied to mining. Examples of these categories are biomechanics and work physiology, human error and human reliability, work design and task analysis, manual materials handling and back injuries, hand tools, organizational and management practices, psychological factors, and training. Although the emphasis is on literature dealing directly with mining, applicable material from other areas of research is included for those categories in which little research has been done in mining. Each record in HFMSS can be recalled by any field such as title, author, date, source, descriptive terms or key words, as well as by any words found in an abstract that describes the purpose, procedure, and results of the research. This report describes HFMSS fields and subject categories, the annotated bibliography, user's manual, and thesaurus of key words. Example printouts in both brief and full formats are included as an appendix.

Three samples of waste lubricating oil were re-refined by processes developed by the Bureau of Mines and reformulated with additives to meet designated requirements for viscosity and service. Quality-defining bench-scale tests were used to compare and evaluate the quality of these three motor oils, eight commercially re-refined lubricating oils, and three new lubricating oils. Most of the re-refined oils studied could not be distinguished from new oils by the bench tests used to define quality. There was some evidence, however, that one and perhaps more of the re-refined products investigated might not meet all of the quality standards of new lubricating oil, suggesting the need for better quality controls by re-refiners.

"INTRODUCTION Although the presence of sulfur causes many petroleum’s to be classified as ""low-grade"" because of the difficulties encountered in manufacturing products to meet rigid specifications, the petroleum industry is finding it necessary to use such crude oils to satisfy present needs. As the demand for petroleum products increases, and available reserves diminish, this utilization of high-sulfur crude oils will be accentuated. Programs designed to supplement the supplies of fuel available from petroleum by the manufacture of synthetic fuel from natural gas, shale oil, and coal are in progress. Such fuels, especially shale oil and, less so, oil from the hydrogenation of coal, also contain sulfur compounds which must be effectively removed. Thus, the need for fundamental research on the sulfur compounds that may be expected in petroleum and allied products is becoming greater as the industry is forced to call upon all available resources to meet the demand for petroleum products. In recognition of this need, the Bureau of Mines has inaugurated a long-range program assigned to furnish fundamental data concerning the presence, characteristics, and effects of sulfur compounds in petroleum and its products."

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between, the Coordinating Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (C.R.C.) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.-4/ Further reports have been issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 and during the winter of 1942-43 and the summer of 1943 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1,) 41-42 and during the summer of 1942. The present report presents analytical data for 1,356 samples, representing the products of approximately 103 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines - and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 770 samples, 286 items, and 94 brands; premium-price, 537 samples, 236 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 49 samples, 31 items, and 18 brands. GERMANIUM is an element that has come into widespread use in the electronics industry in recent, years. So far this increasing demand has been, met by ample supply: however, the future balance is uncertain, and the need has been recognized to discover additional domestic sources of germanium. This investigation was conducted to study the possibility of obtaining a potential supply of germanium from coal or coal ash. It has been known for some time that coal contains germanium; the discovery that By ash from coal-fired boilers often contains appreciably more germanium than the original coal suggested the possibility that coal ash might be an abundant and economical source of this element. In this study the concentration of germanium was determined in numerous samples of coal and ash. A number of miscellaneous waste materials also were examined in the course of the investigation; the results are reported as a matter of general interest. The methods and equipment employed are discussed in detail. Sample-preparation and analytical techniques are described in the appendix. Spectrographic analyses were made on a total of 639 samples, including coal, coal ash, slap ash from lignite and peat, wood ash, and various inorganic materials. Qualitative analyses were run on all samples, and quantitative determinations were made on those samples that contained enough germanium to be measured by this method The lower limit at which germanium can be determined quantitatively by spectrographic analysis is 50 parts per million (p. p. m.), but concentrations of less than 20 p. p. m. can be detected qualitatively.

REAM is a unique method of rock breaking using high energy projectile impact. This report-describes the most recent in a series of tests demonstrating mining applications for the REAM method. In an underground limestone mine at Greer, West Virginia, REAM was used to drive a short tunnel and drill a large diameter borehole. Along with breakage data from these tests the goal of the program was to examine environmental problems which might result from the use of cannons under-ground. A total of 103 shots was used to advance a 14-l/2-feet high by 10-feet-wide face a distance of 5-1/2 feet. It is estimated that the 9.3-pound-concrete projectiles launched at 5000 feet per second will break an average of 0.78 tons of limestone or 67 percent of the 1.125 tons of granodiorite broken in previous tests. The 9-inch-diameter borehole was drilled horizontally by repeated axial impact for 7 feet, 2-1/2 inches by 21 shots giving an average of 4.12 inches per shot. Scaling this result to compressible impact energy yields an estimated 5.8 inches per shot for a 12.8-inch-diameter hole compared to 8 inches per ~hot for a 16-inch-diameter hole in granodiorite. Noise measurements indicate that a silenced cannon can be used within a few hundred feet of mine personnel in a room and pillar mine within the legal limit of 140 dB impulse without additional protection. Some fume measurements were made with satisfactory results, even though the military propellants used produce much greater quantities of toxic fumes than the liquid propellant proposed for the future.

Since the spread of the European war virtually cut off imports from Denmark, Belgium, and France, the Bureau of Mines has had numerous inquiries as to domestic sources of grinding pebbles and silex or other types of ball mill liners. USES Flint pebbles and tube-rill liners are used by grinders of certain ceramic materials to prevent contamination of the finished product by iron abraded from steal baler and liners. The feldspar industry is one of the largest users of flint grinding mediums; they are employed also by curtain grinders of talc and soapstone, ground sand and sandstone, quartz, and chalk. Some paint materials, such as lithopone, have been ground in pebble Flint pebbles have been used more or less in the past, especially by cement manufacturers, and, for fine grinding of gold, copper, or other ores in which iron contamination is not especially deleterious.

In 1986 at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 23,225 acres of the 27,980-acre Jordan Craters Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-128) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Malheur County, OR, about 20 miles northwest from Jordan Valley. No mining activity has been recorded within the study area, and no metallic or industrial mineral resources were identified. Small isolated occurrences of decorative quality stone were identified. However, none of these occurrences constitute a resource. Although the study area is underlain by relatively young volcanic rocks, the area has no known geothermal energy resource.
