"In the process of smelting copper ores and secondaries in the reverberatory furnace to produce a copper matte and a slag low enough in copper content to be discarded on the dump, it is essential to the best functioning of the process that most of the iron in the material charged into the furnace be at the end in the form of sulphide in the matte or ferrous oxide in the slag. Ferric oxide and magnetite present in the charged material should be reduced to ferrous sulphide or oxide. Ferric oxide offers no difficulty in reduction, at least to the magnetite stage, because it reacts very readily with sulphides at quite low temperatures. Magnetite is less reactive and consequently more resistant to slagging, so that the furnace man must take advantage of all factors favoring its reduction in order to prevent accumulations in the furnace.In order to determine these factors more definitely, the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Department of Metallurgy, University of Arizona, has undertaken at the Southwest Experiment Station an investigation of the effect of various factors upon the rate of reduction of magnetite by ferrous sulphide. A previous paper's reported the nature of the reactions taking place and the effect of various physical factors when only pure sulphide and oxide were present. Since in the actual smelting operation, many other substances are also present, it seemed desirable to make a study of the effect of their presence upon the rate of reduction of magnetite by ferrous sulphide. Such a study has been made; the work done and the results obtained are described herewith.As will be shown later, it has been found that of the substances usually present in the smelting charge, silica and magnesia accelerate, whereas lime, alumina, and cuprous sulphide hinder the reduction of magnetite by ferrous sulphide.No report of a previous laboratory investigation of this subject has been found. Almost all furnace operators have made at one time or another at least qualitative ccmparisons of the effect of various changes in operating oonditions upon the behavior of magnetite in the furnace, but the conclusions derived from the experiments have never been published."

This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was done through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will be useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetime. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has configured a flexible data acquisition and analysis workstation, which incorporates control and analysis software written in-house for use in mining research experiments conducted in the laboratory and in operating underground mines. This data acquisition system combines computer-automated-measurement-and-control (CAMAC) modular instrumentation with a Unix-based graphics workstation. The data acquisition front-end hardware can be interfaced to almost any computer. CAMAC instrumentation modules adhere to mechanical, electrical, and digital interface standards and can be custom designed or purchased off the shelf. Communications along the CAMAC bus are regulated by the crate-controller module, which contains the only hardware link to the computer interface. Software support for the data acquisition and analysis workstation consists of a series of functions and programs written in the "C" programming language designed to provide flexible and fast data acquisition, processing, and analysis. The user can interactively control the digitizers and other CAMAC modules by sending standard CAMAC read, write, and command function codes from a menu-driven program. Automated data collection is achieved through software that responds to hardware interrupts triggered by acoustic emission or microseismic events. Graphics display routines are used to plot part or all of the data and provide the ability to process and store signal information selectively.

The project was established in 1943 to investigate magnetite deposits in the northwestern Adirondacks by geophysical surveying and diamond-drilling for the purpose of increasing iron production in the eastern United States.In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the primary objective of the Bureau of Mines is the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, that they may make the greatest possible contribution to our national security and economy. The policy of the Bureau is to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as possible after its conclusion. This Bureau of Mines report is a background study of the International Tin Agreement. Attempts at stabilizing the tin market prior to the agreement are detailed, as well as the conditions and negotiations that set up the agreement. Details of the five consecutive 5-year agreements beginning in 1956 are presented, with emphasis on membership and the agreements' primary tools: the buffer stock and export controls, Attention is focused throughout on the United States activities during the period, especially with regard to its strategic stockpile, and its involvement with the agreement culminating in its membership, for the first time, in the fifth agreement beginning in 1976. Considerations leading to the U.S. decision to join are detailed, and U.S. activities in the negotiations for the sixth agreement are presented. The status and outlook for the agreement are discussed, and evaluations of the effectiveness of the agreement and its components are reviewed.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated 191 composites from the central Mesabi Range, Minn., chiefly by reductive roasting and magnetic separation. After reductive roasting and magnetic separation at minus 325 mesh, 28 composites produced concentrates that contained an average of 66.0 percent iron with less than 10 percent silica. Recovery of contained iron was over 90 percent. Natural magnetic material in excess of 5 percent was present in 142 composites. Trial flotation tests were used to evaluate three samples unresponsive to reductive roasting and magnetic separation procedures, and satisfactory concentrates having low silica contents (averaging 6.6 percent) were achieved.

This publication presents the basic text for a 20-hour accident-prevention training course developed for supervisors by the Federal Bureau of Mines. During the past 2 years, the course has been used by the Bureau in teaching more than 300 groups of coal-mine supervisors-men whose responsibility is twofold: To manage in production and maintenance phases of coal mining and to guide their men along paths of safety. This is a handbook for teaching teachers. In this handbook will be found references to safety practices followed by companies that consistently have low accident records. These companies credit their outstanding performance to the adoption and faithful observance of accident prevention by supervisors and workers alike on a wholesome, cooperative basis. Teaching safety to workers involves both on-the-job and classroom-type instruction. If such training is to be permanently effective, it must be reinforced consistently on the job by the immediate supervisor of the worker. This publication is intended to provide such a supervisor with the motivation to provide such follow-up and shows how he can accomplish it effectively.

Mining activity began in colonial times with ironmaking operations scattered along the eastern seaboard. Iron furnaces and forges manufactured iron implements from bog iron ores using charcoal from the extensive forests as a fuel. Lead ores were mined in the Mississippi Valley and copper ores in the Lake Superior region. However, the real beginning of the American mining industry did not occur until the 19th century. The history of American mining is organized around three epochal events. The first was the discovery of gold in California in 1848, which marked the beginning of a period of apprenticeship in mining and metallurgical techniques. The second was the discovery of the fabulous Comstock Lode in western Nevada in 1859, which expanded mining throughout the Far West and led to large-scale underground mining and the development of smelting techniques for lead, silver, and copper ores. The third event was the building of a transcontinental rail-road system after the Civil War, which brought about the consolidation of the industry from a large number of independent mines, mills, and smelters into integrated operations run by large corporations. Thus developed the mining industry that today supplies the energy and critical materials for the great-est industrial complex the world has known.

Rock property tests were performed on NX-size diamond drill core from the roof, floor, and coal from the longwall mining section of Federal No. 2 mine, West Virginia. The purpose of these tests was to determine the engineering properties of the various strata as part of a ground control study of the longwall operation. The following tests were performed: 1. Uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio 2. Triaxial compressive strength 3. Brazilian tensile strength 4. Modulus of rupture 5. A portable optical instrument for performing multispot laser vibrometry is described. The instrument is capable of measuring arrival times, surface motion frequency, and surface velocity and displaying these quantities in various useful ways. Sigma Research is currently pursuing the development of such optical measuring systems for the evaluation of structures in rock by non-contact interferometry methods. This work was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior (U.S. Bureau of Mines) under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract number J0145075. The goal of the work was to develop a portable tripod mounted measuring system which can be set up at arbitrary distances (up to 30 meters) from a surface and project four in-line laser sample beams on this surface. A light receiving telescope gathers the scattered light from these four spots and provisions are made to mix this light with a reference beam from the laser. Four photodiodes are employed to determine the resultant interference signals which characterize the motion (particle velocity, frequency, amplitude) of the four illuminated spots on the surface under sudy. Information of this type can then be used to characterize the elastic or mechanical properties of the surface in question. In some cases (if more than four spots are involved) this surface information could be back propagated to draw inferences about the internal state of the material volume bounded by this surface.

Several hardware items were prototyped for use with underground belt conveyors, and a manual for installation and maintenance procedures was developed and published under separate cover. Recommendations have been included for implementation of the tools and the manual or, an industry-wide basis.

THIS REPORT covers the third in a series of five projects into which the Conowingo tunnel system has been divided for geographical and practical reasons. It outlines the work constituting Project No.3 that consists principally of the following: (a) To sink the No. 15 shaft and extend the Alden, Sugar Notch, Baltimore No.2, and Laflin shafts from their present depths to tunnel level; (b) to drive a tunnel off these shafts to connect with the western end of the tunnel in Project No.1 (Lackawanna) and to a point 1 mile south of the No. 15 shaft; (c) to construct an emergency pumping plant at the No. 15 shaft, complete with 3 centrifugal pumps of 200-cubic-foot-per-second (c. f. s.) capacity each, and a discharge-water shaft and a discharge tunnel for conducting the water from the pumping plant into the Susquehanna River; and (d) to construct a lateral tunnel 1 mile long off the main tunnel in the vicinity of the No. 15 shaft, to be known as the Wyoming lateral. The project, as outlined, is a self-contained drainage unit that will permit unwatering inundated mines and safeguarding active mines in the Wyoming Basin of the Northern field and also will handle the water in the Lackawanna Basin, thus permitting the temporary pumping plant provided in Project No.1 to be discontinued. The pumps installed in the temporary pumping plant provided in Project No.1 can then be moved to the emergency pumping plants recommended in Projects Nos. 2 and 3, to be installed as the third or standby unit.

Two underground installations of the sprayfan system are described and evaluated. The spray fan proves capable of reducing by 1300 percent downtime due to high methane. Spray fan face ventilation at 20 ft brattice setback is shown to give improved methane control over conventional sprays at 10 ft setback. In addition, this report describes: ? A simple method for determining the most economical application of ventilation for face methane control ? The effect of place variables (primary ventilation, auxiliary ventilation, seam height, etc.) on methane concentrations ? The correlation of methane concentrations with brattice setback. These results are utilized to suggest a safer and more economical approach to face methane control.

The test equipment used in these studies is described in Report of Investigations 3615. 7/ The preliminary study data and results of tests made on various types of mechanical-leading cutting, and transporting equipment at two mines. This report is analysis of the energy requirements of the energy requirements of the underground equipment of a third mine. An analysis of the use of energy and its distribution usually requires in a saving in energy consumption and the reduction of hazards. The distribution system should be designed to supply energy effectively and study for the efficient operation of all machines."

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the mining industry has the highest average annual fatality rate (31.9 per 100,000 workers) among all major American industry. To address this, a major research program to reduce hazard exposure of miners with computer-assisted mining equipment was initiated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.1 One application involves the manual process of extracting and hauling coal where operators, in the tight confines of a mine, can be struck or caught by mobile machinery. The approach to remedy this problem uses a guidance system on the haulage equipment so that it follows the machine that extracts coal. This, in essence, involves sensor-based docking of the machines. Sensors that can survive the hostile mine environment of dust, methane gas, and water, play the key role. Computer analysis of the mining machine's movements and empirical machine characterizations were conducted to establish operating requirements and spatial limitations to ensure proper loading of coal into the haulage equipment. These data served in the selection of a sensing system. Various technologies such as scanning laser systems and ultrasonic sensors have frequently been used in other applications but were found unacceptable. However, a near infrared (IR) sensor employing active targets met the requirements. The sensor has a nominal 75° conical field-of-view and a range from 0.1 to 18.0 m. For the single target mode, nominal range accuracy was 4.3% at a distance of 3.56 m. Correction algorithms were generated reducing the error to 0.6%. Airborne dust testing showed less than 0.8% accuracy (worst case) degradation at levels exceeding (by a factor of 7.5) concentrations permitted by Federal law. The sensor can track multiple active targets providing five degrees-of-freedom (DOF) measurements. Using four targets, the nominal range accuracy was 0.4% without correction algorithms. A guidance system for the haulage system to follow the mining machine does not exist commer¬cially. Such a system can reduce fatalities and injuries by current haulage mining equipment, and is a viable alternative to current haulage control.

The effect of various zinc electrowinning solution impurities on the surface morphology of deposited zinc was investigated. Impurities studied included Al, Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ge, Mn, Ni, Sb, Sn, Ti, Pb02, PbSO4, and HC1. Also, the effect of animal glue, gum arabic, and Na2SiO3 additives on the deposited zinc surface structure was studied. Results were compared with deposits from a pure electrolyte consisting of H2SO4 and Zn+2, 200 and 65 gpl, respectively. Zinc was deposited on a Al cathode, 99.9 pct pure, using Pt anodes. Time, temperature, current density, and impurity concentrations were con¬troller The bulk of the tests were conducted at 40° C and 75 A/ft2 (82 mA/cm2). A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the surface morphology. X ray diffraction techniques were used to determine crystal orientation and nondispersive X-ray spectrometer analyses were employed in an attempt to locate impurity concentrations on the zinc deposit when pitting or re-solution occurred. The impurities were categorized by their effect on current efficiency, morphology, and apparent mechanism of H2 evolution from the cathode.

The time and amplitude statistics necessary to adequately describe electromagnetic (FM) noise in mines are illustrated through computer software techniques. They are 1) Allan Variance Analyses (AVA), 2) Interpulse Spacing Distributions (ISD), 3) Pulse Duration Distributions (PDD), 4) Average Crossing Rates (ACR), and S) Amplitude Probability Distributions (APD). These statistics are illustrated using data taken from a rather large store of raw analog data recorded in operational mines. The curves generated for the illustrations characterize the noise environment in the mines from which the corresponding data were taken, and should aid in the design of reliable communication systems for such mines.

This report describes the Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS) developed by the Bureau of Mines to analyze the records of industrial hygiene samples collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in metal and nonmetal mines. MIDAS is the first system capable of sorting, editing, analyzing, and reporting these data. It is also the first system designed to be used by a number of Government agencies. At present the system contains 225,000 personal and area samples for 61 contaminants in 45 industries. The records date from 1974 to early 1980, and MSHA plans to provide yearly updates to the system. This report presents preliminary analyses of dust exposures and discusses the potential uses and limitations of these data. Analysis of the dust data for 1978 and 1979 showed that bagging had the highest percentage of dust overexposure. Morn than 40 pct of the 1,536 respirable quartz dust, total nuisance dust, and total silica dust samples exceeded the MSHA exposure limit. Other dusty occupations are ranked according to their percentage of overexposure.

The roll forming of oxide powders was studied in a Bureau of Mines investigation to find the conditions and parameters required to make satisfactory ceramic strip. High-quality porous or dense alumina, zirconia, and porcelain shapes were made by sintering strip roll-formed at room temperature from powders containing minor amounts of binder and water. Strips with thicknesses of 0.04 to 0.08 inch and bulk densities from 40 to 90 percent of theoretical densities were made. The parameters most important to formability were particle size, condition of the powders, and roll gap. Other factors affecting quality were speed and surface condition of the rolls, amount and type of binder, water content, and sintering conditions. Ceramic strip was formed at rates up to 78 feet/minute, which is 13 to 23 times faster than reported by previous investigators, and forming was done in a simple and inexpensive roll unit. Reshaping the strip was possible by cutting, grinding, shearing, and stamping. The following innovations were developed that allow roll processing not normally possible with ceramic powders: (1) Fine-sized powders were made into strip by preparing these as partially sintered granules; (2) thick strip was formed by pressure feeding powders into the rolls; (3) flexible strip was made using a rubber-base bonding agent; (4) corrugated strip was formed on shaped rolls; and (5) porcelain strip was densified and reduced in thickness by rerolling while hot.
