The existing computer programs for the simulation of ventilation systems under normal ventilation conditions are reviewed and a suitable program for including the influence of mine fires is selected. New program parts are written for the consideration of methane productions in coal mines, heat and gas productions of mine fires, temperature and air composition changes in ventilation systems, and the ventilation forces resulting from the latter. Other program parts are provided for the detection of danger zones and reversed air currents and for the inclusion of recirculated air currents in the network analysis. Existing program and new program parts are combined. The resulting new program can be used for a multitude of assignments. It is designed for the practical ventilation engineer and should be applicable to all types of ventilation emergency plans, in particular mine fire plans. The organization of the program and its mathematical basis are described. A FORTRAN IV listing and several flow diagrams are included. Eight executed examples are discussed, input and output for these examples explained. Storage requirements and execution times are estimated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The USBM's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

This report provides the results of an industrial engineering study that assessed the safety and efficiency of underground ore handling in U.S. metal mines. One of the primary findings of the study was the improvement needed in controlling muck size in the ore handling stream. Oversize ore causes much additional labor, creating work stoppages and is a principal cause of accidents in metal mines. This report includes data on block caving, back cut and fill room and pillar, shrinkage stoping, and sublevel stoping.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted a full-scale test of a composite polyurethane-aggregate seal in a hydrostatic chamber at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine. This composite seal consisted of a polyurethane and limestone aggregate core that was formed between two concrete block walls. In the hydro-static chamber test, water is used to pressurize the seal. During the test, the maximum average water pressure the seal was able to withstand was 18.9 psi. Further, the seal began to yield at an average water pressure of only 17 psi. At the time of the test, the minimum seal design requirement was 20 psi under 30 CFR4 75.335 (2005). Therefore, based on this test, the seal did not meet the regulatory minimum design requirement. Uniaxial compressive tests conducted on samples from the polyurethane-aggregate core revealed that both the compressive strength and the elastic modulus of the material were much less than that for polyurethane only with a density of 10.0?12.0 lb/ft3. The significant reduction in the strength and stiffness of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture results from the formation of a soft polyurethane foam around each piece of aggregate. The formation of the soft foam seems to be caused by residual moisture from the aggregate. The moisture also caused the density of the polyurethane in the polyurethane-aggregate mixture to be less than the design requirements. The lower density of the polyurethane in the mixture, along with the formation of zones of pure polyurethane only, resulted in the overall seal density being less than the design requirements. During seal construction, steps were taken to control the moisture, but were not successful. An analysis of the seal failure showed that the calculated shear stresses at failure and the estimated shear strength of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture are fairly close. This suggests that the strength properties of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture along with a weak zone of poorly bonded aggregate controlled the maximum pressure the seal could withstand. At the time of the seal testing, the minimum design requirement was 20 psi, as specified at 30 CFR 75.335 (2005). New emergency temporary standards for seal designs were promulgated on May 22, 2007, with a minimum requirement of 50 psi under specified conditions. However, it will be shown that the evaluation of the polyurethane seal performance as designed to meet the older 20-psi criterion can be relevant to the design requirements under the new standards.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of a study of mine inspection records covering 2,200 mining installations over a 3-year period ending December 1974. Tables show the relative frequency of violations of certain provisions of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 in particular areas of concern, such as circuit breakers, grounding, and permissibility. Examples of past use of the data and analyses are presented.

Improvements in remote fire fighting technology are needed to reduce miner exposure to the dangers of fires and possibly save the lives of those who may become trapped. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with U.S. Foam Technologies, Inc1., conducted a series of experiments at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to study the stability, transport, control and fire extinguishing effectiveness of nitrogen-enhanced foam technology. A pilot program was undertaken to evaluate a process developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to recover nickel, cobalt, copper and chromite from domestic nickel laterite resources. An existing five ton per day pilot plant was modified to accommodate treatment of laterite by the Bureau process, which employs reductive roasting, ammoniacal sulfate leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning to extract, separate, and recover nickel, cobalt and copper as high purity cathode products. Three distinct types of laterite i.e., limonite, saprolite and a mixture of limonite/saprolite were processed through the plant during three operating campaigns. Nickel cathode was made during all three campaigns, while cobalt cathode and chromite concentrate were recovered only during processing of limonite. Leach extraction of nickel and cobalt averaged 83 and 67 percent, respectively, while the overall recovery was 80 and 63 percent for nickel and cobalt, respectively. Initially, over-reduction of iron in the saprolitic calcine contributed to poor settling of the leached solids. This problem was overcome by careful control of reducing conditions and flocculant addition. An economic feasibility study was made for a 5000 TPD grassroots laterite processing facility scaled-up from pilot plant data. Estimated (+ 30) percent capital cost for a Nine and plant is $367 million with an estimated $103 million per year operating cost. The study indicates that low-grade domestic laterite may he processed with marginal profit- ability.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the evolution of modern-day blasting agent and slurry products and the state of the art of the usage of these products as it exists today. The steadily increasing consumption of blasting agents and slurries at the expense of cartridged high-explosive usage is related. Although safety is not covered in depth, reference is made to pertinent safety literature available. Product formulations, detonation reactions, and detonation products are discussed. Product terminology is defined and the significant differences between the relatively insensitive modern-day dry blasting agents and slurries and cap-sensitive high explosives are described. Blasting agent and slurry properties are discussed, as well as methods of determining and describing these properties, and specific types of products are also discussed with reference to their ingredients,-properties, and field applications. Increasing consumption of slurries, particularly in small-diameter boreholes, and the development of more cap-sensitive varieties of slurries are forecast although dry blasting agents should continue to dominate the market. The consumption of cartridged high explosives will level off or gradually decrease.

Shales and clays from Illinois were sampled, tested, and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregate by rotary-kiln methods. Sampling procedures and the 1 ,,,y of the Pennsylvanian shale units are discussed. Chemical, X-ray spectrographic and X-ray petrographic analyses were run on the samples to determine if a correlation existed between chemical mineralogic composition and expansion. Preliminary expansion testing was conducted in a muffle furnace. Rotary-kiln tests were conducted in a 16- inch by 14-foot rotary kiln. The weight of the aggregate ranged from 27 to 59 pounds per cubic foot. Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete. Compressive strength of the concrete using the 7-bag of cement cement per cubic yard mix, after autoclave curing for 6 hours, ranged from 2,950 to 6,750 psi. No correlation was found between the chemical, X-ray spectrographic, and X-ray and petrographic analyses and expansion, Sixteen samples made suitable lightweight aggregates in the laboratory rotary kiln. The expansion temperature range of eight of the samples was extremely narrow, and difficulties would probably be encountered in processing these materials commercially.

"The O'Jack Mining Co.'s zinc and lead deposits in Jasper County, Missouri, have been worked intermittently since the early nineties; production from these deposits was greatest during World War I and II - 4,668 tons of zinc and lead concentrates. The deposits are in a sink-hole structure in which intense deformation has taken place and in areas of disturbance in the sheet-ground horizon.While high-grade ore was being mined, the operators sank seven churn-drill holes for the purpose of extending reserves. They then asked the Bureau of Mines to explore the deposit with the object of developing a reserve of lower-grade ore that could be mined by open-pit methods. Twenty-two holes were sunk. The methods of drilling and sampling and the logs of the holes, as of those drilled by the operators, are given later in this report.INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mined has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The surge in gold and silver prices during the 1970's attracted many new mining operators and has rekindled interest among experienced ones. With its low capital investment requirements and fast payout, leaching has attracted many operators--particularly those with small or low- grade deposits. Although in certain situations leaching offers many advantages over conventional mining methods, many operators are uncertain how these relatively new techniques should be implemented. Consequently the Bureau of Mines has prepared this circular to disseminate information on gold and silver leaching practices, techniques, and problem. Engineering data gathered from 26 operations indicate that most ores are leached in heaps following crushing and distribution on pads. Metal values are recovered from cyanide leach solutions using either zinc precipitation or charcoal adsorption. Potential problems that my hamper on block development of a leaching operation are poor percolation characteristics of the ore, calcium salt buildup, low temperatures, and solution losses. An extensive bibliography on gold and silver leaching is appended.

A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974, was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (DEI) on research and development. for laboratory, field and other engineering studies on the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included discussions on the peculiarities of retorted shale materials to be investigated and discussions of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I Program Development. II Exploratory Laboratory Tests on Old U.S.B.M. Retorted Shale. III Laboratory Tests on Pilot Plant Retorted Shales, IV Laboratory Tests on Retorted Shale from the Semi-Works Plant, Field, Test Plots and Ponds. V Field Compaction Tests. A rotary kiln process was developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines to produce consistently an iron product containing 3 to 7 percent nickel. Cuban laterite and serpentine ores were smelted in a gas-fired batch-rotary kiln) 5 feet in diameter and 9 feet long. The metal contained 2 to 4 percent carbon, with little or no silicon, and could be produced on a large scale with modest capital investment. A total of 121 tests was run using this procedure. The tests were conducted with a maximum temperature of 2,625° F., using linings of firebrick containing 40 to 70 percent alumina. Slags in the kiln were acid to neutral. The material in each batch passed through three stages: (1) Sponge metal, (2) carburization, and (3) balling and meltdown. Half the tests were made while firing the kiln with atmospheric-temperature air; the remainder were fired with preheated air. Tests showed that preheated air decreased fuel requirements, dust losses, and reducing agent, and increased the capacity of the kiln.

This Bureau of Mines report examines the extent to which Australia is able to pursue this policy in terms of its own competitive advantages and the implications of such a policy for the United States. Such factors as the impact of other competing producers and their advantages, expected world demand, and infrastructural problem--which may limit pursuit of this policy to the fullest extent--are discussed. After a broad review of the re-source, economic, social, and environmental factors, the perspective for increased processing is examined for a number of mineral commodities.

The objective of this research was to examine variations in melting and forging practice for four titanium-base alloys and to determine their effect on the resultant product. Of particular interest was the evaluation of the skull-casting technique. The data should serve as a guide to producers and consumers of titanium products. Physical properties of four titanium-base alloys in ingot form and in sheet form were evaluated and correlated, where possible, with variations in the melting and casting procedure. Consumable-electrode melting was used throughout, but arc current and furnace backfill pressure were varied, and ingots were formed both by melting directly into a water-cooled copper mold and by skull melting followed by pouring into a graphite mold. Alloying metal additions for the alloys tested were (1) 8 percent manganese, (2) 6 percent aluminum and 4 percent vanadium, (3) 6 percent molybdenum and 2 percent aluminum, and (4) 16 percent vanadium and 2.8 percent aluminum.

Current certification testing of self-contained breathing apparatus includes tests with human subjects wearing the apparatus while exercising. During these tests, certain apparatus variables are measured during rest periods. Because of concerns that the present tests may not accurately simulate the stresses to which an apparatus is subjected in the field, the Bureau of Mines proposed new human subject tests. It was also felt that different measurement techniques would supply more reliable data on the apparatus response to these stresses. The Los Alamos National Laboratory was asked by the Bureau to evaluate the proposed tests and monitoring techniques. The major conclusions derived during this study are these: (1) The proposed tests are not too physically demanding. (2) As long as human test subjects are used, a minimum subject weight should be required for certification tests. (3) Important apparatus variables are the breathing resistance, temperature, and carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations of the inhaled gas. (4) Continuous monitoring should be used, rather than monitoring only during rest periods. (5) New pass/fail criteria based on realistic estimates of the user's physiological requirements, as tempered by present and future engineering limitations, are needed. (6) When available, breathing machines, rather than human subjects, should be used for most certification testing. (7) A more realistic ergonomics test than that proposed is needed. (8) A gas leak test for the system and a facepiece leakage test are also needed.
