Synopsis U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accidents statistics have identified ore-pass hazards as a significant safety problem in U.S. underground metal mines. The statistics show that nearly 75% of injuries are directly or indirectly related to pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes, the use of hand tools in ore passes, fails of broken rock in ore passes and structural failures of chutes or gates and ore-pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines. Risk assessment methods, such as fault-tree analysis, have been employed to identify the most probable causes of orepass failures, define research priorities and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning and unsafe ore passes. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in a laboratory setting with the use of a reduced-scale orepass mock-up. Field tests are being initiated in mine ore passes to determine static and dynamic loads. Data from the test ore passes are being compared with data from the mine to characterize true system behaviour. Computer modelling with the use of closed-form solutions, finite-element analyses and a newly developed particle flow code predicts static and dynamic leads from the flow and the impact of ore and waste in the ore pass. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than expected. The total static load is substantially less than is typically used fur the structural design of chute and gate support members. It is suggested that damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads. This is being verified with the use of results from laboratory tests, field tests and particle flow analyses. Ore passes are vertical or steeply inclined openings in a rock mass through which ore and waste are transported and where they mar also be stored. A typical underground mining system is shown in Fig. 1. The arrows indicate the locations of ore passes and loading pockets and their relative configurations. The control of material flow is potentially one of the most hazardous operations in underground mining. According to MSHA data. most of the ore pass-related accidents in the U.S.A. are associated with the loading-unloading cycle and removal of blockages from ore passes. In particular, attempts to free ore hang-ups have resulted in multiple fatalities. The hazards are obvious; there is uncertainty as to when the ore will break loose and miners are unable to escape falling rock to a safe location. Although ore passes and chutes and gate systems for underground metal and non-metal mines roust meet the requirements specified in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Parts 57 and 75, recent structural failures of ore-pass linings and gates have underlined the lack of adequate ore-pass design standards available to both MSHA enforcement staff and mine engineers. Because of the importance of an ore pass to the safe operation of a mine design criteria need to be assessed and new guidelines developed. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the Nationals Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines and studying design criteria for ore passes. This report is the second of a series on roof movement in coal mines. The first (R. I. 3355)4/ dealt with convergence of roof and floor and movement of the surface accompanying and following extraction in a mechanized mine in which retreat of rib lines was rapid. The studies reported herein were made in a mine in which all the coal is loaded by hand, and movement of the rib lines was much slower in consequence. In choosing a site for this work, it was decided that the mine selected should have natural conditions akin to those of the first study and entirely different methods of working. To this end a cooperative agreement was made with the Crucible Fuel Co. through W. J. Whitaker, secretary, for conducting the work in the company's Crucible mine, operating in the Pittsburgh bed in Greene County, Pa. This paper gives an account of the methods used in the investigation, excerpts from the data obtained, and such generalizations as can be made.

Timely and rapid intervention to underground combustion events (fires, explosions, and spontaneous combustion) is the key to the successful control of the mine atmosphere and restoring of a coal mine to production. The focus of this paper is the utilization of a GAG 3A jet engine system to combat either large out-of-control fires or to render an entire mine inert when access to problem areas is difficult or impossible. This system is based upon a Soviet designed agricultural jet engine which consumes aviation fuel with oxygen (O2) from the intake air and exhausts combustion gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), along with the nitrogen (N2) from the air and small amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). The system is designed to approach stoichiometric combustion (ideally, pure burning that scavenges all the oxygen from the intake air). Therefore, these exhaust gases are almost entirely “inert gases”- i.e., gases which do not contribute to, and in fact, can suppress the combustion process due to the lack of oxygen. Other methods to inert mine areas have been used in the US and internationally, but these methods usually use low flow inertisation equipment or methods. Pegmatites in Colorado occur for 150 miles along the Front Range (eastern-most range of the Rocky Mountains) from Larimer County on the north to Canon City on the south, and west into the Gunnison area. Many of the deposits have been classified. Minerals found in the various dikes include beryl, scrap and possibly punch mica, lithium-bearing minerals, columbite-tantalite, feldspar, and several rare minerals. Pegmatites are abundant in the Crystal Mountain district in Larimer County. About 5 miles south of the Crystal Mountain district and often identified with that district is the Hyatt pegmatite area. The Hyatt Ranch deposit has attracted particular attention because of the comparatively high beryl con-tent of the upper part exposed in opencut workings.

The percentage of coal cleaned mechanically has increased greatly in the past 30 years. This technological change in preparation methods, accompanied by mechanical innovations in most phases of coal mining, has enabled the industry to supply quality coals at competitive prices. The Bureau of Mines has contributed to this progress by conducting research on coal-preparation problems, by evaluating the performance of domestic-and foreign-made preparation equipment, and by recording advances as they occur in industrial coal-cleaning practices. The Bureau's work in this field is recorded in the more than 150 technical and scientific publications listed in this volume. These reports, published by the Bureau over the past half century, document the Nation's progress in a vitally important phase of fuel technology.

This report compares a proposed 10/60 "piggyback" 02 generating self-rescue unit to the standard CO self-rescue unit with respect to work task interference. A simulated low seam coal mine was constructed and subjects performed locomotion, shoveling, cart pushing, and timbering tasks with the 10/60 or self-rescuer attached to their belts. Task completion time was longer on all tasks when wearing the 10/60 unit, although only locomotion was statistically significant. The 10/60 unit was bumped over 100% more often than the standard self-rescuer. Implications for design of the proposed 10/60 container are: 1) unit?s container must be extra durable to withstand the added abuse it is likely to receive by low coal miners; and 2) extra consideration must be given to preventing the device from slipping on the belt while working, especially in low coal.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coals in Dickenson County, Va. It is one in a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for the production of metallurgical coke either as mined or after beneficiation. Nearly 4 million tons of coal was produced in Dickenson County in 1955, of which approximately 2.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 5 cleaning plants. The Federal Geological Survey has estimated that nearly 1,300 million tons of measured and indicated coal reserves remained in the county as of January 1, 1951.

The U.S. Bureau of Mimes conducts research at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, with the aim of mitigating the effects of rock bursting. Destress blasting is commonly used as a stress control technique at the mine. A digital seismic array and an array of borehole pressure cells (BPC's) had been installed near the site of a stope undergoing mining and periodic destressing. The instrumentation was being monitored at the time of a destress blast of the 46-99 stope. No significant seismic events occurred coincident with the destress. However, the destress was followed by a 21/2-week period of increased seismic activity, including two damaging events on February 7, 1990, at 034500 (hour, minute, and second) and 122020 Pacific standard time. BPC measurements indicated coseismic ground pressure changes on the order of 200 to 300 kPa associated with the damaging events. Fault plane solutions and dislocation models established that stress changes induced by the event at 034500 may have been significant in promoting the occurrence of the event at 122020. Theoretical investigations suggest that applying knowledge of the existing stress field, an understanding of rock burst mechanics, and fracture mechanics principles can improve destress effectiveness.

Results of a comprehensive study of the absolute spectral radiance of the infrared emissions from methane-air explosions are reported. The spectral growth of these expanding flames were recorded with a time resolution of 1 msec in the spectral range of 1.7 to 5.0 µm. Time-resolved spectra were obtained for methane-air mixtures as a function of stoichiometry, nitrogen dilution, and Halon dilution, in a 9-liter vessel under different venting conditions. Data are also presented for coal dust-air explosions. Temperatures, obtained from the absolute radiances and from a band ratio technique for methane-air, are internally consistent and are generally 50° to 200°K below adiabatic flame temperatures. All near limit mixtures gave essentially the same flame temperatures (1,500° to 1,600° K) regardless of whether the limit was obtained by dilution with excess air, excess methane, excess nitrogen, or Halon. The coal dust explosion spectrum is essentially a blackbody continuum at 1,500° K with some selective emission at 4.4 µm from hotter CO2. The data are analyzed in terms of the radiative dynamics of a sperically expanding flame zone. The importance of radiative transport is assessed. An equation is derived which relates the instantaneous fraction of combustion power radiated to adiabatic variables.

Patterns of species colonization, biochemical interaction among species, and competitive phenomena were studied in four reclaimed areas in western North Dakota ranging in age from one to four years after mining, along with a site from a native mixed grass prairie for comparison. Early successional changes in floristic composition and soil chemistry were quantified. The mined sites had been contoured, topsoiled, fertilized and seeded. Despite seeding of agronomic species, initial colonization was by fugitive species; analysis of the seed bank in topsoil showed that the most dominant colonizers immigrate after topsoiling. Of the 95 species encountered, Kuchia scoparia was the most dominant in the first two years following mining. Kochlo had relatively low densities in the first year (50-80 plants m-2), but was robust and attained heights of 88 cm with a biomass of about 400 g m-2 In the second year, the plant densities increased to over 10,000 plants m"2 but the height and biomass were reduced to 15 cm and 90 g m-2. However, during the third and fourth years Kochia density declined and was practically non-existent by the fourth year, while the planted Agropyron grasses had concomitantly increased. Other pioneers like Amaran thus retroflexus, Chenopodlum album, Helianthus annuus, Salsola spp. And Setaria spp. showed a less abrupt but similar decline. Chemical analysis of the soils over the same time period showed decreases in electrical conductivity (E.C.), and in the concentrations of P, Ca, Mg, Na, Li, Sr, and SO4 (due to leaching), while N increased. Field studies were conducted on the competitive relations between the dominant species - Kochia scoparia and Agropyron spp. - during early succession. It was found the Kochia acted as a "nurse" crop for several months during the first year of Agropyron spp. establishment, but then began to shade heavily by late July, thus reducing grass tillering. Field and growth chamber experiments on the intraspecific competition relations of Kochia demonstrated that its density and dry matter production, per plant and per unit area, conformed to several laws of plant population biology. Autotoxicity or the depression in growth of a species by its own degradation compounds, in Kochia, appears to be the main factor causing the decline in its growth. Results from a field experiment indicated that thinning dense second year Kochia stands to the density of first year stands did not alter the growth of Kochia, providing strong evidence for autotoxicity. Similarly, several growth chamber experiments demonstrated that small amounts of decaying Kochia leaves and especially roots were toxic to Kochia growth, but not Melilotus officinalis or Agropyron canlnum, Chemical analysis of the soils and plant tissues indicated nutritional im¬balances as shown by P/Mn and P/Zn ratios may be responsible for autotoxicity. In addition to Kochia, a bioassay experiment showed allelochemics to be important in several other colonizing species. Although our results indicate that later stage species generally have greater toxicities than first year colonizers, autotoxicity in the very initial stages seems to be accentuated by harsh habitat conditions. Several practices (mowing. fire, etc.) are used to manage grasslands. Mowing of the first year erect, annual, colonizing vegetation was shown to be beneficial in the growth and establishment of wheatgrasses after mining in western North Dakota. Plots containing Kochio predominantly were mowed in mid-and late-July, and in mid-August, during the first year of growth after recontouring, replacing topsoil. seeding and fertilizing. It was found the Kochia densities were reduced to two percent of the control and its biomass reduced to less than one-third when the area was mowed in mid-August. On the other hand, wheatgrasses showed increases of 23% in stem density and 860% in biomass production over the controls when mowed in mid-August. The mowing of Kochia just before seed-set apparently reduces interspecific competition between Kochia and Agropyron spp. during the following growing season. The method is highly recommended for use in hastening the establishment of planted grasses.

A primary means to reduce environmental levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposure to miners is to reduce the amount of DPM emission from the engine. A quick and economic method to estimate engine particulate emission levels has been developed. The method relies on the measurement of pressure increase across a ?lter element that is brie?y used to collect a DPM sample directly from the engine exhaust. The method has been re?ned with the inclusion of an annular aqueous denuder to the tube which permits dry ?lter samples to be obtained without addition of dilution air. Tailpipe ?lter samples may then be directly collected in hot and water-supersaturated exhaust gas ?ows from water bath-cooled coal mine engines without the need for dilution air. In this report, the effects of anode-production variables, such as aggregate coke sizes, pitch binder content, and baking cycle, were investigated. A small alumina reduction cell proved effective in evaluating anodes prepared from commercial materials and from lignite coke and pitch. Compressive strength was found to be the physical property most significantly influenced, but it did not appear to affect anode consumption. Specific carbon consumption, that is, the ratio of carbon in the anodic gas to carbon theoretically oxidized at the anode, was used as an index of anode consumption. It was found that an anode made with lignite coke and commercial pitch was very low in consumption; however, anodes made completely from lignite but by a different fabrication method showed high consumption and anode deterioration. Microscopic examination of anodes after electrolysis showed evidence of higher consumption at low current densities, and was useful in judging overall anode quality. Based on the physical properties of the anodes and their consumption during electrolysis, lignite can be a suitable material for anodes, provided the proper fabrication conditions are used.

For years many oil producers have believed that often low-pressure oil- and gas-bearing strata have been over coked in fields where the rotary system of drilling has been used. Collom3/ gave as a reason for this con¬dition that because the mud fluid was thick, the oil or gas stratum was plastered and sealed as the tools passed through it and no oil showed at the surface. Although this observation was made 15 years ago, it may often still be true notwithstanding modern developments in coring and electrical logging. Operators have believed, also, that mud fluid does not solidify behind the casing. Lewis and McMurray4/ stated: "All the evidence obtainable from practical experience points to the fact that the mud fluid properly mixed and employed does not solidify behind the casing, even in deer wells and after long periods."

The Bureau of Mines is testing a dewatering technique for phosphatic clay waste that will recover a portion of the water lost using conventional waste disposal methods and produce solids suitable for land reclamation. The technique utilizes a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO), that forms strong, stable flocs that can be dewatered on a static screen followed by further dewatering on a rotary screen. In field tests conducted in northern Florida, clay wastes containing a nominal 2.5 pct solids have been consolidated to greater than 20 pct solids. The rate at which PEO-treated material continues to dewater in a mine cut also was monitored. Preliminary results indicate that PEO--treated material will dewater to 30 pct solids in 140 days. Pretreatment of phosphatic clay waste with lime and H202 was shown to improve the dewatering technique for problem clay wastes.
