"Environmental desulphurisation is an attractive alternative for the management of acid generating tailings. Non selective froth flotation is the most commonly used method to produce desulphurized tailings, as shown from many previous works (McLaughlin and Stuparyk, 1994; Bussière et al., 1995; 1998; Benzaazoua et al., 2000a,b; 2002). This process can reduce the volume of problematic tailings to manage, by making a sulphide fraction concentrate. The desulphurized tailings can then be used as a moisture retention layer in a cover with capillary barrier effects to prevent acid mine drainage.In this paper, the authors present the results from different laboratory and pilot scale flotation tests which confirm that low sulphide, non-acid generating tailings can be produced by froth flotation. It is also demonstrated that the sulphide concentrates obtained from desulphurisation, when mixed with binders gave good long term results in terms of mechanical behaviour, thus demonstrating that the sulphide fraction can be used for paste backfill material. From previous work (Bussière et al. 1998, 1999) on the evaluation of the operating and capital costs of the desulphurisation process for different ore types, the use of desulphurized tailings to create a dry cover was then studied for several scenarios. The desulphurisation process was compared with other technologies (underwater disposal, engineered soil cover) currently used to prevent acidic drainage (AD) for a new mining operation and the advantages and disadvantages of desulphurisation are presented as well as the costs of this method of AD prevention.INTRODUCTIONThe principal environmental problem of the mining industry today is the generation of acidic drainage (AD) resulting from the natural oxidation of the sulphides in mine tailings. This phenomenon involves the generation of acidity which increase the amounts of toxic metals in the waste water released into the environment by a mine. The environmental impact of the AD has been described in detail in previous work (e.g. Down et Stocks, 1977; Ritcey, 1989; Gray, 1997; Ripley et al., 1996; Aubertin et al., 2002)."

"Mining companies have recognized that characterization of ore breakage plays an essential role in the design and optimization of comminution circuits.Recently the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has developed a new breakage model incorporating the effect of particle size, and a new breakage characterization testing device, called the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT), which allows rapid testing of particle breakage under high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impact conditions.Positive feedback received from mining company sponsors to the new technology has prompted the JKMRC to further validate the device and the model through a formalized validation program using machines designed and manufactured by Russell Mineral Equipment (RME). The first unit was installed and commissioned at the Anglo Platinum laboratory in Johannesburg in March 2007 and four more major mining companies will participate in the validation program in 2008, including Barrick, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Teck Cominco. The results from validation tests at the JKMRC and Anglo Research have shown that the JKRBT generates statistically similar breakage parameters to the traditional Drop Weight Test, but with significant advantages over its predecessor. Application of the JKRBT in geometallurgical testing with the AMIRA P843 GeM project has confirmed the JKRBT device offers a rapid and consistent method for determining the hardness of drill core samples. The JKRBT has the potential to revolutionize ore testing, with applications in laboratory impact breakage characterization of rock samples, drill cores, coal and other materials. It also stands poised to significantly advance the process control and management of comminution circuits since the concept is readily adaptable to on-line ore hardness measurement.INTRODUCTIONMining companies have long recognized that the performance of a comminution machine such as a crusher or an autogenous / semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG) mill depends not only on the machine operating conditions, but also on the “hardness” of the feed material to be broken. This recognition has driven significant interest in laboratory particle breakage characterisation and testing. The laboratory breakage characterization tests can be roughly classified in two broad groups based on their primary breakage modes: tumbling and impact/compression. The famous Bond ball/rod mill tests (Bond, 1952 and 1961) represent the typical tumbling test and have become the industry standard for estimating the specific energy (kWh/t) of rod and ball mills. However, as the energy application in the single particle impact tests can be well defined and controlled, the latter have received significant attention in the last 30 years. It was estimated that mining companies worldwide spent over three million US dollars on single particle impact breakage characterization testing in 2006."

The Red Lake Mine is located approximately 600 km northwest of Thunder Bay. This 545 tpd (600 tons/day) underground narrow vein gold operation is set to produce in excess of 14.8 tonnes (475,000 ounces) in 2001 at a cash operating cost below 75 U$/oz. The high-grade nature of this deposit (>55 g/t or >1.6 opt) coupled with its complex geological environment and relatively deep location dictated the choice of a very selective primary mining method, Mechanized Overhand Cut and Fill. In addition to geological challenges, mine design issues such as material handling, ground stability and requirements for yieldable ground support are also discussed in this paper.

"The geology of the Ore Fault Ni-Cu deposit has been reinterpreted in the light of recent studies of the geology of the Neoarchean Bird River Sill Complex and the occurrence of economic Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralization. The Ni-Cu sulfides are hosted by the lower of two parallel NNW-trending and moderately W-dipping mafic-ultramafic intrusions related to the Bird River Sill Complex. The bod¬ies intruded a bimodal volcanic suite consisting of weakly deformed mafic flows and felsic pyroclastic rocks. The mafic volcanic rocks are geochemically related to the MORB-type rocks of the Lamprey Falls Formation, and the felsic volcanic rocks are related to arc-type rocks of the Peterson Creek Formation. The original pyroxene- and olivine-dominated mineralogy of the sills has been replaced by variable ser¬pentine-amphibole-talc-carbonate assemblages.The Ni-Cu sulfide assemblage exhibits textures and geochemical signatures typical of orthomagmatic sulfide mineralization. The sulfide minerals are associated with cumulate layers of magnetic ferrochromite that range in thickness from a few to tens of centimeters. A later event of Zn-Cu-Ag sulfide mineralization associated with quartz veining and garnet-chlorite alteration along a fault that strikes north, dips vertically, and cuts all rock types. The mineralized fault is cut by the NE-trending Peterson Creek shear zone. Where the Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralized zones intersect, remnant magmatic features such as amphibolite or cumulate ferrochromite bands occur within quartz veins or local chlorite alteration. The mixed zones contain a very unusual polymetallic assemblage of Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, and platinum group elements (PGE)."

"The basic problem of arsenic contamination from mine water is discussed. Effective methods of removal involving chemical precipitation, activated carbon adsorption, ion exchange and reverse osmosis are discussed. As well as an economic analysis, detail is also paid to other ions in solution which are removed simultaneously.INTRODUCTIONThe object of this paper is to review arsenic and its removal from gold extraction plant effluents. The first method considered is chemical precipitation. A second method is sorption processes, such as ion exchange resins and activated carbon adsorption. A third method is the possible application of reverse osmosis for the treatment of mine waste waters containing arsenic.Arsenic pollution in the gold mining communities of Canada and Ghana have been extensively studies (l, 2). Lynch(3) Shabunin, Gutman and Kogan( 4), Hollo, Troth, Vennes and Illinigi (5) and Hau(6) have reported their removal methods of arsenic by chemical precipitation, ion exchange and biological methods. Their conclusions were that the precipitation with Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions was most effective.Scope of the ProblemInitial aspects of this research program involved a detailed analysis of the operation of a gold extraction plant located in Canada. The name and location of the mine is proprietary information. Figure 1 gives a basic process schematic with the main tailing streams identified.Table 1 gives information as to the various mine streams and their physical and chemical composition. In this study, primary attention is paid to the removal of dissolved arsenic from waste waters. Solids from this type of operation can always be back-filled. As could be anticipated, the dissolved As content of the primary flotation tailing stream is very low. The dissolved As level in the secondary processing stream and the roasting quench water is quite high. The reason being that at this stage of the process, the arsenic has been freed from the arsenopyrite forms."

"Denison Mines Limited has been processing uranium ore in the Elliot Lake area since May of 1957. The ore body is located i11 the Huronion sediments on the north limb of the Quirke Lake syncline. Minerals of metallurgical significance are brannerite, uraninite and monazite. Gangue minerals include quartz, chlorite, sericite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and rutile. Silica content of the ore is greater than 75 % and pyrite-pyrrhotite content around 7 %. Specific gravity of the ore is 2.75.The Denison flowsheet is based on sulphuric acid leaching to extract the uranium values from the ore followed by liquid-solid separation to wash the uranium-bearing solution from the barren ore. The resultant pregnant solution is concentrated and purified by ion exchange followed by two-stage precipitation with ammonia to produce an ammonium yellow-cake.Elliot Lake ores require high acid concentrations and high temperatures to extract the uranium from brannerite and monazite. Uraninite will leach at low acid concentrations as long as oxiclizing conditions exist. The whole ore must be treated so that these conditions do exist.This paper provides a description of the leaching process equipment as originally installed and major changes in that equipment to date. Process control refinements to economically improve extraction are also discussed."

"The successful commissioning and ramp up of the Albion Process™ at the GPM Gold Project relied on the successful scaling up of the process from batch and continuous pilot plant campaigns (Voigt et al., 2015). Critical information about reaction kinetics and residence time, grind size and pulp density were determined at the laboratory scale and successfully applied to the commercial scale. A limitation of small scale testwork, is that some parameters cannot be measured reliably and scaling up is a function of the physical size of the equipment which isn’t possible to test with laboratory scale equipment. Oxygen mass transfer rate is one such parameter since this is a complex interaction of many factors including slurry temperature, solution and slurry chemistry, slurry viscosity, agitator type, dimensions and power, oxygen bubble residence time, oxygen purity, tank geometry and oxygen injection technique. Oxygen generation represents an important operating cost for the Albion Process™. Pivotal to the Albion Process™ operating economically at atmospheric pressure is the capability to efficiently transfer oxygen while utilising as much oxygen injected to the process as possible. To respond to this Glencore Technology developed the HyperSpargeTM supersonic gas injector. This paper compares the HyperSparge™ against other sparging techniques to quantify the benefits of oxygen injection via a supersonic gas jet on scale up of the oxygen mass transfer system. The paper then examines plant survey data from the GPM Gold Project to demonstrate the very high oxygen utilisation that can be achieved with a correctly designed oxygen mass transfer system.INTRODUCTION One of the main challenges in chemical reactor design is the scale-up of processes from the laboratory to industrial scale. Processes which cannot be faithfully simulated with an experiment at the laboratory scale face challenges due to the physical dimensions and complexity of full scale operation. One example of this is the design of oxygen mass transfer systems in atmospheric oxidative leaching circuits such as the Albion Process™. A number of constraints associated with the use of laboratory scale equipment to design full scale circuits are involved in gas mass transfer processes in agitated slurries such as the Albion Process. Chiefly, typical laboratory and pilot size equipment lacks the required volume to provide useful design data without relying on empirical correlations: the specific agitator power input is artificially high, the bubble residence time in the vessel is artificially low, the oxygen partial pressure at the base of the vessel is artificially low and the oxygen delivery method may differ significantly to the industrial process. Further, the dynamic nature of the process introduces additional impacts on gas mass transfer, including the presence of solids, recycle streams and minor elements, plus the variances within the reality of a process plant such as disruptions or variance of feed quality."

"Refractory materials are essential for all high-temperature applications in industry. Depending on the position in the furnace and specific process requirements, refractories are produced from several raw materials, such as dolomite, magnesite, bauxite, graphite or chromite. Most of these raw materials are not rare but strict quality requirements limit the producers of refractories to only a few deposits in the world. Thus, raw material supply is a critical factor for the production of refractories and accounts for 40-50 % of the total costs of refractories.A possible way to lower dependency on raw material supply is recycling of spent refractories. Main challenge in recycling is the separation of different brick types from each other and the removal of impurities, such as steel or slag. The European FP7 project REFRASORT aims to apply sensor-based sorting for separation of spent refractories. Sensor-based sorting is known from food industry, recycling and mineral processing and has proven its reliability. Nevertheless, some adjustments are necessary compared to applications in mineral processing because of other sensor-types and a higher number of products in one sorting step. This paper presents the results of feasibility tests for sensor-based sorting of refractories with near infrared spectroscopy and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Both sensors showed the potential to identify different brick types but the most promising results were obtained using LIBS technology. INTRODUCTIONRefractories are solid, ceramic products, which can sustain temperatures of more than 1500°C, without losing their stability or shape. Bricks of refractories have to withstand corrosion in contact with liquid steel or slag. Various high temperature applications, such as the production of glass, steel, copper or cement, require high quality refractories. The quality requirements of refractory bricks are strict, because small impurities can lower the thermal strength significantly."

Red Dog mine is the world's largest Zn producer. The deposit consists of sulphide ore zones in sedimentary exhalative (sedex) deposits, and is characterized by the presence of multiple metals and multiple ore types. The objective of the case study is to characterize seven different minerals, Zn, Pb, Fe, Ba, sPb, Ag and TOC, within eight different rock types. Geostatistical models were constructed for each variable within the eight rock types, and subsequently assembled to give 40 realizations for six 25ft benches. The stepwise conditional transformation was used to account for the complex multivariate relations. In addition to reproducing the input data, histogram and variogram, the resulting models also respect multivariate relations locally and globally. This paper documents the methodology to construct these models. A thorough validation procedure was implemented. Comparisons with blasthole data show that the conditional simulations and the long-term models agree in expected value. The main advantages of the conditional simulations are (1) the explicit accounting of multivariate relations between the data in model construction, and (2) the ability to quantify variability and uncertainty at any scale. A small exercise comparing the profit from a kriged and a simulated model is also examined. Results show that the simulation approach showed a 3% increase in profit, relative to the conventional estimation approach.

"The Three Bluffs gold deposit is located in the Committee Bay greenstone belt, which forms part of the Rae domain of the western Churchill province, Nunavut, Canada. Gold mineralization is hosted by iron formation of the Neoarchean volcanosedimentary Prince Albert Group, and is associated with silicification (quartz veining) and sulfidation of magnetite and other Fe-rich minerals. Conventional U-Pb zircon dating of a conformable dacite unit within the volcanosedimentary host-rock sequence and a crosscutting diorite intrusion confirm a ~2.7 Ga age for deposition of the supracrustal package. U-Pb monazite dates and Pb isotopic analyses of sulfides were obtained by laser ablation-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). A subset of U-Pb monazite (1813.8 ± 8.7 Ma) and Re-Os arsenopyrite (1822 ± 21 Ma) dates, combined with a Pb-Pb secondary errorchron age for pyrite and arsenopyrite (1829 ± 77 Ma), suggest that gold mineralization associated with sulfidation of the iron formation occurred at ~1815 Ma, prior to high-grade (upper amphibolite facies) tectonometamorphism in the Three Bluffs area (D2TB/(M2TB). An ~1815 Ma age for deposit formation is broadly consistent with evidence from elsewhere in the western Churchill province and to the southwest in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a late Trans-Hudson (1.9-1.8 Ga) gold mineralizing event. The majority of U-Pb monazite ages form a second population at 1780.6 ± 4.2 Ma, similar to the age of the majority of Re-Os arsenopyrite analyses (1763 ± 11 Ma). These dates are thought to reflect the timing of peak M2TB metamorphism. 40Ar/39Ar dating of amphibole, biotite, and muscovite yielded plateau ages ranging from 1723.8 ± 9.0 Ma to 1710 ± 17 Ma, which are interpreted to record the timing of postpeak metamorphic cooling to below the respective closure temperatures for Ar diffusion in these minerals. Le gîte aurifère de Three Bluffs est situé dans la ceinture de roches vertes de Committee Bay, laquelle appartient au domaine de Rae dans l’ouest de la province de Churchill, au Nunavut, Canada. "Syncrude's overburden removal requirement ranges from 20 million to 30 million bank cubic metres per year to meet tarsand demands for the production of 129,000 barrels of synthetic crude oil per day. The economic tar-sand lies beneath a variable thickness of overburden materials, composed of silts, clays, some sands of lacustrine origin, wind-deposited sand dunes, and out-wash sands and gravels.For the removal of overburden, Syncrude commissioned its own mobile equipment fleet in January 1981. This fleet consists of two Demag 241 hydraulic shovels, ten Titan 33-15B trucks and support equipment. Prior to this, all overburden removal was being carried out by contractors.This paper presents an overview of overburden removal at Syncrude, with particular reference to the performance of its own fleet.IntroductionThe Syncrude Tar Sands Plant was officially opened on September 15, 1978. After an expenditure of approximately $2.26 billion, the second and the largest commercial tarsands plant was on stream toward a permit production rate of 129,400 barrels of synthetic crude oil per day. The Syncrude Plant, a joint venture of six oil companies, the federal government and the Alberta government, is a major step forward toward the goal of Canadian energy self-sufficiency.The Mildred Lake operation of Syncrude Canada Ltd. Is located 40 km north of Fort McMurray and 480 km northeast of Edmonton in the Province o f Alberta.Synthetic crude oil leaving the plant is a blend of two-third s gas oil and one-third naphtha. The two streams combine in a pipeline and flow to Edmonton. The product takes six days to make the journey, arriving at four locations in the city Imperial's Strathcona Refinery, Gulf's Edmonton Refinery, the Interprovincial pipeline terminal and the Trans-Mountain pipeline terminal. Each Syncrude owner receives a share of oil equal; to its percentage of ownership in the project. At the present time, the oil is being utilized by Canadian refineries from Vancouver to Montreal."

"Microwaves have the capability to heat up sulphides, especially clusters of particles of approx. 1 mm. Some sulphides absorb microwaves more readily than others. Molybdenite is especially effective in this regard, possibly due to its flaky nature and/or electrical conductivity. Even where it occurs in low concentrations in a deposit, individual rocks may be ore grade due to the high monetary value of MoS2. Such rocks often result from crushing mined veinlets or stockwork, or are contained in the cutoff grade fraction of ROM. Machine segregation of rocks high in MoS2 by infrared sensors after microwaving could therefore advantageously be used to upgrade lower grade ore between Mine and Mill. This would reduce the size of the latter, and thus its CAPEX and OPEX. Such upgrading could also yield shipping ore for a distant Mill, or extend ore reserves.Barrick Gold Corp. has been supporting the development of MW/IR sulphide sorting for the past three years. The results of MW/IR sorting work on molybdenite and other (pyritic) ore samples from a variety of sources are being presented here.INTRODUCTIONThis paper looks at mechanized, i.e. machine ore sorting technologies currently available and under development, and what conditions would be needed for the potential application of such ore sorting to sulphide mining and milling. Current machine sorting involves no-contact sensing technology for rocks, and signal processing after sensing to activate airblast segregation of certain rocks, normally the smallest mass to keep compressed air costs down.The forerunner of modern sorting is probably magnetic separation, which utilizes an inherent property of certain ores to divert it into mag and non-mags fractions. Radiometric ore sorters, which have been applied successfully for decades in the pre-concentration of uranium ores (Wotruba and Riedel, 2006) initiated modern sorting. In the 90’s, sensor-based machine sorting became a viable means of increasing the overall economic recovery of a resource. This technology became driven by the availability of low cost computing equipment and the concurrent development of algorithms, and by the availability of extremely fast response sensors and air actuators, allowing the sorting equipment to run faster, dropping the cost per tonne. It has been in industrial minerals processing that rock sorting has been most widely adopted, not really surprising. Liberation occurs on a different scale than in the base metal industry. Most industrial minerals are mined from massive deposits, requiring (in the past) no upgrading. Many of these operations now run into product contamination problems, which ore sorting can solve. One illustration: in Finland, a quarry is separating limestone from dolomite at 500 tonnes / hour, with individual rocks weighing up to 15 kg. Many of these industrial minerals operations have stockpiles of earlier discarded below-quality rocks, now being reprocessed with the help of ore sorting. The economics of this are very favourable, going from zero or negative value (stockpiles can not be left when closing the mine) to full product value for at least a portion of the stockpile. This suggests that in the future the economics of overburden sorting could become attractive under the right circumstances and such treatment could well become an integral part of open pit mine development."

"For mining operations globally, the scale and criticality of the grinding mill drive has meant that selection of the correct mill drive technology is paramount. With so much depending on the successful implementation of the electrical drive system— safety operation, timely installation, availability, energy efficiency, minimum maintenance and extend its use as tool to assist during mill liner exchange—customers are justified in their scrutiny and slow adoption of new drive technology. From the first installation of low, fixed speed synchronous motors to the introduction of the current source and further voltage source variable frequency drive, innovations require long periods of time and mining customers willing to push the industry forward. In recent years, the variable frequency drive has been the stepping stone for a new generation of mill drive technology. In use for decades in other heavy industrial applications, the drives allow for system optimization in a myriad of ways. The most dramatic of changes is in the design of the motor. Where in the past motor design was bound by line frequency, today the designer can optimize machine size and, more importantly, eliminate the need entirely for the synchronous motor. Induction motor design has now progressed to the point where low speed operation is possible at efficiency levels nearing those of the synchronous design. Moreover, the simplicity of the squirrel cage design means that availability, reliability and spare part requirements are greatly improved. As the next step in the evolution of large pinion driven grinding mills, the low speed induction drive offers a new reliable and robust system to the market.IntroductionAs deposit grades continue to decline, new ways of processing ever greater concentrator throughputs have been required to maintain throughput efficient and profitable operations. "Low back pains account for about 13 per cent of all compensation claims made to the Quebec Workmen's Compensation Commission and cost the employers a sum exceeding ten million dollars. The frequency and cost of these health problems in Quebec metal mines are proportional to the provincial trends. An elaborate review of the literature on the causes, nature and prevention of low back pain is made in this presentation. A prevention program for low back pain has been designed in cooperation with a team of seven medical specialists and two physiotherapists for the Quebec metal mines. The program is especially designed for persons who have had low back pain, in order to prevent a recurrence, and for persons beginning to feel chronic difficulties. It is based on existing programs at the Hawthorne Plant of Western Electric Company and at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, but it requires a much different approach because of the nature of medical care available at the mining sites. The program is difficult because it involves a change of attitude for every employee and every supervisor. The program, so far, is beneficial because several men are now seriously engaged in an active program of reconditioning and because the problem of low back pain ie beginning to be seen from a new angle."

"SGS Minerals Services (Lakefield, Ontario site) has conducted a number of developmental and pilot programs that examined methods for the beneficiation, extraction and recovery of lithium from a variety of spodumene containing hard rock sources. An overview of the beneficiation programs is presented separately by Aghamirian, Mohns, Grammatikopoulos, Imeson & Pearse (2011). The focus of this discussion will be the hydrometallurgical steps involved in producing a high grade lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) sample from the spodumene concentrate. SGS has applied the standard Li2CO3 hydrometallurgical flow sheet to a number of spodumene concentrates and has determined that all of these samples respond in a similar manner to the process and produce a final product having a Li2CO3 grade of >99.5%. The standard process is sufficiently robust to accommodate the observed variability in the concentrates that have been tested. Advantage of one spodumene deposit over another will thus be gained through process optimization and innovation. Optimization at the beneficiation stage and at the hydrometallurgical stage must be considered. Some aspects of the process optimization of the hydrometallurgical flow sheet will be presented.INTRODUCTION The current activity in the exploration, development, and mining of lithium based minerals is due in large part to the key role that this metal plays in the rechargeable battery industry (U.S. Geological Survey, 2011). Lithium battery technologies are widely applied in a range of portable electronic consumer products. The expanding development and production of hybrid and fully electric vehicles has contributed to the increased interest in finding and developing new lithium sources in order to meet the expected demand from the lithium battery industry. Lithium may be sourced from continental brines (sub-surface salars), hard rock minerals (pegmatite, spodumene), hectorite clay deposits, geothermal brines and oilfield brines. Currently the majority of the lithium products are produced from Li brines. The four major lithium producing countries are Chile, Australia, China, and Argentina (U.S. Geological Survey, 2009; Roskill, 2009). These countries accounted for 97.6% of the total lithium produced in 2010."

THE first application of the cementation process took place in the year 1864, according to H. Standish Ball, when a break in the brickwork lining at a depth of 270', in one of the Rhine Preussen pits near Homburg, was sealed by running in milk of cement from the surface by means of a small hand pump. At about the same time Monsieur Portier adopted the method in France for repairing breaks in shaft lining. Figure 1 is descriptive of the Portier system and is of interest when compared with modern practice. During the next thirty years numerous attempts were made to improve the process; the general method used in sinking being to put clown bore holes outside the perimeter of the shaft for the purposes of injection. The cementation process was first recognized as an important as-set to mining in 1896 when Monsieur A. Francois developed his method of boring and injecting inside the shaft below the permanent water level. "Gulf Minerals (Canada) Limited' s Rabbit Lake Uranium Operation is located in the northern portion of Saskatchewan, 198 miles southeast of Uranium City and 134 miles northwest of Lynn Lake Manitoba.This paper describes flow sheet changes to solve operating problems and briefly describes future changes to accommodate the new ""B"" Zone ore.The Rabbit Lake mill was designed to process 1600 dry tons per day of uranium ore, with an average grade of 0.370 percent u3o8. In 1981, the mill processed 2040 tons per day at a grade of 0.231 percent u3o8 . The process modifications and flow sheet changes that allowed this increase in tonnage will be discussed in relative chronological order. Mill feed was introduced on June 10, 1975, the original equipment consisted of an Ingersoll Rand hydraulic breaker mounted over a 24"" square grizzly. The - 24"" ore was fed to a 2011 X 6"" seflli autogenous grate discharge mill close circuited with 20"" cyclones, the mill discharge was screened on a tyler double deck screen with the undersize (8 rnesh) reporting to the cyclones, the screen oversize was returned by conveyor belt to the mill feed chute.The cyclone overflow (28 mesh) was thickened in a 100' diameter thickener to obtain 55 percent solids for the leach circuit.The leach circuit consisted of two slurry holding tanks and five leach tanks."

This paper describes a focus of work presently being conducted at the Rock Mechanics Research Group at the University of British Columbia. The underhand method under consolidated fill ensures a high recovery under an engineered back that is comprised of cemented rock fill and/or cemented paste fill. This method of mining is generally necessary either due to a weak rock mass comprising the immediate back and/or high induced back stresses. A major concern in the design of sill mats is the loading and strengths associated with the overlying sill mat. This paper reviews past practice coupled with present observations and measurements from over ten(10) mines throughout North America. It outlines areas of concern in terms of design requirements.

"The Detour Lake Mine is located in northeastern, Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northest of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane. The mill processes a free milling gold ore using both gravity circuit and leaching with a state-of-the-art carbon-in-pulp circuit. The grinding circuit is a conventional SABC circuit with a tonnage of 55,000 mtpd at 95 microns with the addition of pre-crushing upstream of the SAG mill.The present paper will describe the methodology used to successfully prove that gold of the Detour Lake Mine ore is mostly concentrated into the fine size fraction of the blasted rocks. It will describe the various options possible to create value from this ore property.IntroductionThe purpose of this test work was to determine the grade of the pebbles and consider if there was value into discarding the pebbles and replacing the material by fresh feed.1. Pebble samplingThe pebbles were sampled and assayed for grade every day for 3 months. After 3 months of sampling, the results showed that the pebbles only carried 28% of the fresh feed grade. This phenomenon can possibly be explained by the fact the gold is located into area of fracture in the rocks.January-March 2014 – Pebble assay average• Line #1 = 0.222 g. Au/t• Line#2 = 0.275 g. Au/t• Head grade = 0.88 g. Au/t2. Crushing and grinding circuit surveysWith the above information, a grinding circuit survey was planned. The purpose of the survey was to build a JKSIMMET model of the grinding circuit for mill optimization but also to understand the deportment of gold into various size fractions that may explain why there is so little gold in the pebbles. All streams and size fractions was analysed for particle size analysis and for gold.Since Detour has dual grinding lines, both circuits were sample at the end of May. Two supplemental survey of the secondary crushers were also done and a survey of the gyratory crusher."
