An investigation was carried out by Mintek to investigate the influence of additions of gold to ?Fecraloy?, alloys based on Fe-Cr-Al. The aim was to try and improve the oxidation resistance of the ?Fecraloy? alloys at elevated temperatures over extended periods of time. The ?Fecraloy? alloys are very oxidation resistant alloys already employed in industry as substrates for metallic catalysts in auto-catalyst systems for high performance cars. Since their life and durability is limited by the slow, but steady, oxidation of the substrates, any change in the growth or stability of the oxides could be an improvement.

"Mechanical properties and microstructure of an Al-4.7Cu-0.74Mg-0.51Si-0.48Mn-0.10Cr-0.09Ti-0.02Fe (wt. %) alloy subjected to various thermomechanical processing (TMP) have been investigated and compared to conventional ageing at 170°C (designated T6). Three TMP routes involving cold deformation of solution treated samples were tested. These were (i) 3%-stretching (T8-3%), (ii) equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to true strain (e) of ~1 (T8-1) and (iii) ECAP to e~2 (T8-2), all with subsequent ageing at 170°C for 0-96 h. At peak age conditions, both yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture decreased for the T8-3% state as compared to the T6 condition. Intermediate ECAP (T8-1 and T8-2) lead to significant increase in maximum yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture. The changes in mechanical properties were related to microstructure evolution, encompassing changes in grain sizes, dislocation densities, precipitate morphology and phase fractions, which were characterised using transmission electron microscopy. Relations between TMP, precipitation behavior and contributions to different strengthening mechanisms are evaluated.INTRODUCTION Al-Cu-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as structural materials in aerospace industry due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance. "Under high stress conditions, rock bursts, borehole breakouts, and spalling events are common phenomena that occur around underground openings. In general, together these three phenomena represent brittle failures of an intact rock mass; however, individually they reflect different failure modes under high stresses. After analyzing and comparing the stress-to-strength criteria for rock bursts, borehole breakouts, and spalling events, proposed by previous researchers, it is found that these brittle failure phenomena share common stress-to-strength prerequisite. The stress-to-strength preconditions for brittle failures can be defined by the ratio of the maximum tangential stress around an underground opening to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) (s?max/sci) or by the ratio of the maximum far-field principal stress to the UCS (s1/sci). Both these indicators can be used to reflect the same stress preconditions. For s?max/sci, a ratio of 0.4±0.1 represents the critical stress requirement for brittle fracture. However, for s1/sci, a ratio of 0.15±0.05 should be considered as the critical stress requirement. Numerous engineering case studies and analysis of rock mechanics based on the Hoek-Brown criterion also verify these two stress-to-strength preconditions. Here, these two indicators are presented with an error range because complex rock mass quality ratings, lithology, and geotechnical conditions have profound impacts on the stress-to-strength preconditions for brittle failures. INTRODUCTIONHigh stresses are one of the most important factors that must be considered when undertaking underground rock mass projects (Kaiser et al., 1998). Wang et al. (2009) reviewed current progress in the evaluation of high stresses and their corresponding criteria. However, after clarifying the definition of high stress, civil engineers need to understand the deformation and failure behaviors of rock mass around an opening under high stresses. Under high stress conditions, the deformation of rock masses around an opening can be categorized into two groups, i.e., severe brittle failures (or rock bursts) and compressional plastic deformation of the surrounding rock mass, as indicated in Figure 1."

The Darrehzar porphyry Cu deposit is situated in the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic suite of Central Iran. The REE and trace element data suggest that the deposit lies within a continental margin setting. Phyllic and propylitic alteration are pervasive in the area but potassic and argillicalteration are not readily recognized on the surface. This is possibly the result of super gene weathering of the surface rocks or because of an intense phyllic overprint. Poor soil development and abundant outcrop make the area suitable for a case study of lithogeochemical exploration technique for Cu deposits. A total of 262 rock samples was collected over the area and analyzed for 15 elements. The geochemical data cor-relate with the mineralogical composition of the rocks with the phyllic zone being marked by high-er concentrations of Si, Al, K, and by a high sericitization index while Ca, Mg, Sr, total Fe and Mn are more abundant in the propylitic zone. The lithogeochemical study indicates a metal zonation from a Cu + Mo-rich core to a Zn + Pb ± Ag-rich outer zone. Principal component analysis is useful for separating element associations, which in turn reflect the alteration halos. Principal components 1 and 2 depict alteration zoning, where-as 3 shows an association of Cu and Mo, that roughly defines the mineralized area.

"Teck and Aurubis are working together to commercialize a technology for the processing of copper arsenic sulphide concentrates that is economic and sustainable with regards to the environment and community. The pressure hydrometallurgical approach is a desirable option as mineral extraction and arsenic fixation can take place in a single autoclave vessel. A test work program was carried out where a range of copper concentrates with varying arsenic grades was processed under CESL leach conditions. This paper discusses the stability character (in terms of arsenic) of the resulting residues and their mineralogy. The basic ferric arsenate sulphate phase (BFAS; otherwise known as type 2) was identified as the main arsenic carrier. All CESL residues demonstrated high stability (<1 mg/L As) through a range of aggressive (pH and ORP) environmental leach conditions.INTRODUCTIONArsenic deportment and control in the copper industry needs an integrated approach involving each stage of the value chain, i.e. exploration, mine operation, refining process and mine closure. Teck Resources Limited (Teck), Canada’s largest diversified mining company and Aurubis, Europe’s largest copper producer, have formed a partnership to advance the application of CESL copper-gold technology for the development of high arsenic bearing copper resources (Bruce et al., 2011).Among the options for arsenic control in the metallurgical treatment of copper concentrates is the precipitation of ferric arsenate, which is widely accepted as the most suitable method for stabilizing arsenic (Ferron and Wang, 2003). The pressure hydrometallurgical approach to processing arsenic bearing copper concentrates is a favorable option as mineral extraction and arsenic fixation can take place in a single autoclave vessel. Under CESL pressure leaching conditions (150 °C, 1380 kPa) high copper extraction and arsenic (V) fixation is possible.Within the pressure leach autoclave, arsenate and ferric iron react to form scorodite type phases. The precipitate formed under CESL conditions is dependent on the Fe (III) /As (V) ratio and the tenor of cations and anions, particularly excess sulphate (Gomez et al., 2011a). Previous studies on CESL residues have found arsenic to be present as crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O) (Bruce et al., 2011), basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS: Fe(AsO4)1-x(SO4)x(OH)x·(1-x)H2O, where 0.3<x<0.7), and/or arsenate adsorbed on to hematite (Gomez et al. 2011b). Although not a focus of previous work, scorodite was the predominant precipitate formed when the concentrate Fe/As was <1.5 (Mayhew et al., 2010), and BFAS was the predominant precipitate when the concentrate Fe/As was >10 (Gomez et al. 2011b)."

Magnetic studies have been carried out on 88 surface and 157 underground samples from the Coronation Mine area of northern Saskatchewan. The intensity of the surface samples was compared to trace element determinations from the same locality. A good correlation was found between the titaniferous constituent of the rocks and the intensity of magnetization. From the direction of the remanent magnetism, two virtual geomagnetic poles were determined -latitude 12° 54&apos; North, longitude 158" 17&apos; West; and latitude 23" 42&apos; North, longitude 163° 45&apos; West. The sulphide ore specimens showed anisotropic susceptibility characteristics. A relationship was found between the measured maximum susceptibility values of the ore specimens and the direction of the tectonic forces which are considered to have formed the structure at the Coronation mine. Introduction T HIS paper summarizes the results of a study of the magnetic properties of samples from well-known Precambrian formations. The observed data give information for an interpretation of the magnetic field conditions in Precambrian times. The high magnetic intensity values indicate the importance of the study

"ABSTRACTA brief background on in-situ testing of mine backfill, as well as pressuremeter testing is briefly described, and results from an in-situ testing on paste backfill are presented. A series of self-boring pressuremeter tests were done from the top of a backfilled stope in an underground mine. The tests were conducted along a 20-metre vertical line in the centre of the stope. Some 14 tests were performed along this depth. The instrument used was a Camkometer built by Cam Insitu, Cambridge. The instrument proved to be efficient and reliable for underground testing in a cemented paste backfill. The testing program was conducted within the planned schedule with a high success rate. The test done in this study permitted the measurement of paste backfill strength, stiffness and in-situ horizontal stress within the backfill. RésuméUn bref historique des essais in situ dans le remblai minier est présenté. L’essai pressiométrique est décrit succinctement et des résultats d’une campagne d’essai dans un remblai en pâte sont présentés. Un programme d’essais au pressiomètre auto-foreur a été réalisé à partir du sommet d’un chantier remblayé sous terre. Les essais ont été réalisés le long d’un ligne vertical d’environ 20 mètres pour un total de 14 mesures. Le Camkometer de la firme Cam Insitu de Cambridge a été utilisé. Cet instrument s’est avéré efficace et fiable pour tester le remblai en pâte cimenté sous terre. Le programme d’essai s’est déroulé à l’intérieur de l’échéancier prévu avec un taux de réussite élevé. "The relative-value (R-value), discrimination-factor (D-factor), and vector-ratio (V-ratio) method (RDVM) provides a geological knowledge-based statistical and geological-genetic interpretation scheme for geochemical data that enhances discovery in geochemical exploration. The practical advantage of RDVM is that it synthesizes geochemical features geologically related to ore-deposit discovery in three steps: reclassifying element concentrations using log-probability plots into R-values; calculating geologically defined D-factors from R-values; and determining V-ratios. D-factors are the sum of R-values, divided by the number of R-values summed. Based on the analyses selected, D-factors mimic rock or mineral deposit signatures. WE were requested to make a digest of our original grinding report, Fine Grinding Investigations at Lake Shore Mines. This digest is much easier to read than the original report, but it lacks the experimental &apos;evidence&apos; found in the first report which, in many cases, is much more interesting and educational than the conclusions derived from it. In the course of rewriting the paper, we noticed several new angles on the test data which had not occurred to us previously. From the data included in the report and other tests not published, calculations were made which indicated a line of new test work. These tests, among other things, more than suggest a technique for designing the length of mills, the position and number of classifiers, and the total loads a mill should carry.

Firstly, to drawn attention to recommendations which have been accepted by the International Atomic Energy Agency concerning radiometric reporting methods and calibration in uranium exploration, and secondly to emphasize the benefits that- will stem from adopting them. These recommendations are contained in an IAEA Technical Report, No. 174, which has been prepared with the intention of serving as a general guide to the subject. The existence of this specialized report is likely to be unknown to most of those who can benefit unless it is given some publicity by an organization such as the CIM. The recommendations were prepared by a small international committee consisting of Dr, P. H. Dodd , U.S .A. , Dr. R. L. Grasty. Canada, Dr. L. Levborg, Denmark, Dr. M. Matolin, Czechoslovakia , Dr. S. D. Simov, Bulgaria, and the writer.The fact that there are standard scientific units of mass, distance and time is taken for granted, It is also accepted that the type of instrumentation used to measure one of these parameters is irrelevant to the way the measurement is reported. Geophysical parameters such as magnetic field strength and gravity have generally accepted units, the gamma and milligal, which are defined in SI terms. These units are employed irrespective of the operating principle, or manufacturer or organization involved in the measurement."

The Mary River iron ore deposits were discovered in the 1960?s. The high quality of the deposits was immediately evident, and drilling programs were successful in defining a resource adequate for supporting a feasibility study. Through a combination of ownership, market and political forces, the deposits were not developed. Having missed the window of opportunity, the project remained dormant for over three decades. Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation, with its 100% ownership of the Mary River deposits, began trading publicly in 2004. Modern exploration and metallurgical test work began in 2004 and has continued in 2005 and 2006, resulting in total expenditures during this period of almost C$60 million. In May 2006, an engineering team lead by Aker Kvaerner E&C, a division of Aker Kvaerner Canada Inc., completed a scoping study based on the first of five identified deposits. Highlights of that study include direct shipping of high quality lump ore to Europe over a 34 year mine life at a production rate of 10 million tonnes per annum, based on an indicated resource of 309 million tonnes at 66.1% Fe and an inferred resource of 28 million tonnes at 65.9% Fe. Capital costs were estimated at C$1.5 billion. Using iron ore prices approximately 36% below that of the 2006 market, a pre-tax internal rate of return of 15% was estimated assuming equity financing. Payback on initial capital was 5.9 years. The pre-tax life-of-mine cash flow was estimated to be C$6.3 billion. As a result of this study, Baffinland initiated a Definitive Feasibility Study, under the management of Aker Kvaerner, which is scheduled for completion in December 2007. This paper touches on the geology of the deposits, the current resource and the outlook for expansion. Project permitting, construction planning, logistical challenges and ocean shipping considerations are discussed, providing a current perspective on the project scale, scope and timeline for commercial production. In addition, an overview of the Company?s bulk sampling program will be provided.

"The economics of developing gold deposits containing elevated levels of cyanide soluble base metals is often challenged by high cyanide consumption and increased operating costs. SART is a chemical process that enables cyanide consumed by base metals to be recovered and recycled for gold leaching. The process also provides concurrent recovery of the base metal to generate incremental revenue from the sale of high-grade base metal sulphide concentrates. Although SART was developed and successfully piloted by Lakefield Research and Teck Corporation in the late 90’s and is now a public domain technology, the adoption of SART has been relatively slow due to concerns about implementation costs and the reliability of metallurgical performance. Through extensive experience in selective metal sulphide precipitation applied to mining wastewater since 2007, BQE Water has provided process know-how, design along with operations and maintenance experience to a number of projects involving the integration of SART into various metallurgical flowsheets on an industrial scale. This paper presents the commissioning experience and operating data from a SART plant treating up to 500 m3/hr of leach solution at a heap leach operation in Mexico. INTRODUCTION One of the current trends in the gold industry globally is the increasing importance of complex polymetallic gold deposits as discoveries of large Carlin type gold deposits become increasingly rare (Sceresini, 2005). The presence of cyanide soluble copper and zinc in complex gold deposits necessitates changes to the traditional gold extraction metallurgical flowsheet. A tool available to the industry to help manage the interference of cyanide-soluble base metals in gold extraction is the SART (sulphidization-acidification-recycling-thickening) process. SART breaks the weak acid dissociable (WAD) base metal-cyanide complexes, precipitates the metals as high-grade sulphide concentrates and makes the freed cyanide available for recycle."

"Damaging seismicity associated with deep faulting in both mining and civil excavations not infrequently occurs without warning, and often before proper mitigation measures have been put into place. Severe squeezing is also a common problem for excavating through deep major faults. While both problematic conditions are difficult to predict and characterize, there is often a need at pre-feasibility and feasibility level to more reliably estimate the possible level of risk posed by such geologic structures. This paper introduces some structural geologic techniques that have potential application for both mining and civil applications for aiding forewarning of the extent of these types of problem.INTRODUCTIONEncountering adverse faulting at depth in deep excavations, whether for mining or civil purposes can create serious economic and safety impacts. For deep mines or for deep tunnel projects, measures are available for aiding prediction of the extent of possible influence that large scale faults could create, but these techniques are rarely if ever applied as part of routine site investigation programs, or even as part of risk assessment evaluations. Several well established structural geologic methods of palao-history reconstruction have potential application for aiding forewarning of the extent of these types of potential problem by allowing estimates to be made of:• controlling stress orientations that might engender reactivation movement;• principal stress magnitudes that could lead to failure initiation, and• probable mechanisms of fault deformation - brittle (bursting) or plastic (squeezing).This paper explores several structural geological and rockmass characterization techniques that have application for unravelling fault structure of importance to deep engineering projects. Their application for mining or tunnelling purposes is advocated in conjunction with conventional rockmass characterization assessment approaches using GSI, RMR and/or Q to aid early recognition and definition of potential adverse ground condition behaviour associated with intersection of significant faulting at depth."

Introduction The Outokumpu copper mine is situated in eastern Finland, 50 kilometers west of the city of Joensuu or 225 kilometers directly north of the city of Viborg (Viipuri), which is situated at the eastern end of the gulf of Finland (Figure 1). The ore-body was discovered in 1910 by Dr. Otto Trüstedt after two years of careful, scientifically-directed, search. During the early period of development of the mine, the ore was treated locally and the copper re-covered by an electrolytic process. Now the ore is concentrated by tables and by flotation. The concentrates are shipped to Germany for refining. In 1929 the mine produced 150,000 tons of ore from which between 20,000 and 25,000 tons of flotation concentrates containing 20 per cent copper were produced. Profits in 1929 were approximately half a million dollars, but the present price of copper will affect very seriously the profits for 1930. The ore reserves are given as between 7 and 8 million tons (1). The grade of ore is stated to be 4 percent to 6 percent copper, with a little zinc.

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. Main ventilation fans are used in all the mines and they run continuously 24 hours a day and 365 days in a year. Any improvement in their performance can lead to considerable power saving. The basic principle for selection, operations, and related measures are discussed in brief in the paper. The contributions of different elements of mine fan on its performance are discussed in brief. The means to improve efficiency of a running fan is also discussed and the importance of saving even 1 Kwh is elaborated. It is found that the cost of the energy saved may even permit a replacement fan to be procured in a few years time.

DURING the past year, the writer has investigated the treatment of a variety of British Columbia tungsten-bearing ores. Much of the test-work described in this paper was carried out in collaboration with Mr. A. G. Lyle in association with the British Columbia War Metals Research Board at the University of British Columbia. The remainder was completed in the laboratories of the Department of Mines at Victoria. Two mills in the Province are at present treating tungsten ores. Descriptions of these are included through the co-operation of Messrs. S. Gray (1) and A. A. Almstrom (2). MINERALOGY, OCCURRENCE, AND SPECIFICATIONS In the present paper, attention is directed solely to scheclite, inasmuch as known occurrences of other tungstcn minerals in British Columbia are of mineralogical interest only. Transparent to translucent Hardness. . . . . . 4.5-5.0 Scheelite may contain as much as ten per cent of molybdenum in solid solution, but most of the specimens from British Columbia examined by the writer were relatively pure.
