Small-scale mining operations are characterised by a large variety of equipment availability and a high level of operational flexibility. Mine planning is usually scarce or absent in small quarries in Brazil, and mine management generally focuses on daily operations. As a result, analysis of the effects of unit operations, such as blasting, over the whole mining process is often neglected. The goal of the following project was to study the effect of production blasting on loading and hauling times, secondary breaking times and primary crushing times at the Experimental Mine of the Research Center for Responsible Mining of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The operations analysed included blasts that performed:under the average operational standard, defined in this paper as Case 1according to quarry standards, defined in this paper as Case 2.In order to establish the effects of blasting on the downstream process, three key performance indictors were used:The time taken to load the truck, when there is the need for material selection. Due to the fact that we do not have an operational baseline, the increase in time cannot be established, meaning that we must content ourselves with comparing the mean time in each scenario.The average time used for secondary breaking machinery.The time required for the primary crusher to fully process the load of a single truck. The results obtained indicate correlations between the coarseness of the blasted material and these operational times. The development of the SECV brown coal open cut at Loy Yang will require depressurisation of aquifers both within and below the coal seam sequence in order to maintain open cut stability. Prediction of future open cut dewatering requirements at Loy Yang Open Cut and evaluation of the regional consequences of dewatering has required development of a detailed hydrogeological model of the Loy Yang area. The complex stratigraphy of the coal seam and aquifer/aquitard sequences at Loy Yang have been analysed and integrated with the hydrogeological concepts developed from regional groundwater studies to formulate a realistic hydrogeological model as a basis for finite-element flow modelling.

Soil gases were collected on activated charcoal, analyzed by computerized mass spectrometry and treated with multivariate statistical pattern recognition to determine the diagnostic geochemical signature associated with the Okuaizu Geothermal Field in Japan. From this a geothermal model was developed and compare to 175 "unknown" samples in a 250 m spaced grid over 30 1Qn2 mapping the areas with a matching geochemical character. Faults and fractures were generally located by the presence of high molecular weight components. Following the initial survey, the faults in two specific areas were precisely located by a second survey with samples at 10-30m spacing. Where earlier geochemical surveys had placed anomalies 1-2 Km northeast of the geothermal center, the fingerprint survey accurately mapped the system and detected several faulted zones. It was not misled by hot springs located away from the geothermal System.

After extensive testing and a period of plant trials to establish the benefits of Caro's acid (H2S05) as an alternative oxidant, Queensland Mines Limited (QML) decided to replace pyrolusite with Caro's acid in its acid leach uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek. The decision was based on the reagent savings and environmental gains associated with the removal of manganese from the process liquors, as well as the labour savings and improved oxidation reduction potential control possible in leaching using the Caro's acid system. The permanent Caro's acid generating plant was designed by Interox Chemicals Pty Ltd of Australia (IC) to suit QML's require- ments and differed from the unit used during the plant trials. Commissioning of the plant was completed in April 1983 and it has been continuously used since that date.

Choosing a ceramic capillary action filter is often favoured in processes where low energy consumption is important, such as the dewatering of iron ore. In addition, the performance of the filter medium is essential, and the possibility to regenerate the medium is an advantage compared to other types of filter media. Although low, roughly 8 - 9 w-per cent for iron ore concentrate, and even cake moisture is the primary goal of dewatering, the introduction of better filtration processes can result in significant improvements of water economy and material efficiency.As industrial beneficiation processes are often complicated in their chemistry due to impurities originating from the ore itself, from the up-stream processing equipment and from the process water used, the characterisation of the filter media after usage might provide relevant information on what actually takes place during long operating periods. The aim of this study was to obtain new information on the fouling of fi lter media in an iron ore process to enhance and develop the regeneration process of the media in the future.X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterise ceramic filter media used in the dewatering of magnetite. Principal component analysis and discriminant analysis were introduced to identify trends in the data. Two types of media blockages were found to play an important role in an acidic iron ore dewatering process: fouling by slurry particles and by in situ crystallisation of a calcium compound, of which the latter originated from the combination of process water and process chemistry.

Operating difficulties during 1977 with the Imperial Smelting Furnace operated by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited at their Cockle Creek zinc-lead smelter were found to be caused by premature softening of sinter in the upper shaft of the furnace. This soft- ening was shown to be a consequence of raw materials and operating policies which led to unusually high levels of both lead and silica in a sinter of low basicity. A programme of softening tests and micro-examination of a range of sinters established that premature softening occurred when lead and silica increased to the point where a lead-calcium silicate with a low lime content became the major continuous phase in the sinter. This information was used to define a range of compositions which kept the softening temperature acceptably high for furnace operations.

TO measure high temperature properties of blast furnace burdens ( the change of gas permeability accompanied by contraction, soft- ening and melting ) which govern the gas flow and its distribution, a series of experiments were carried out under simulated blast furnace conditions, using sinter, acid pellets and self -fluxing pellets. 1) The high temperature properties are affected by the ore's reducibility ( up to 1000 -1200¦C ), and the composition, and volume of gangue before reduction. Generally, the burde- ns with high basicity ( Ca0/Si02 ), high reduc- ibility and low volume of gangue have good high temperature properties. Good high temperature properties are : a high temperature at which the gas permeability rapidly decreases, a high melting point and a low maximum pressure drop. 2) Using acid pellets, slow-down of red- uction rate occurs around 1000¦C because the pellet forms a dense metallic shell, while its slag core, resulting from a FeO, Si02 and A1203 reaction, has a lower melting point. 3) The addition of MgO sources improves high temperature properties both of sinter and Pellets.

Under design philosophy, the Hilton concentrator produced lead, zinc and LGM (lead plus zinc) concentrates. The LGM (Iow grade middling) concentrate was produced by combining coarse middling streams from the lead and zinc circuits, regrinding and subsequent flotation. Mineralogical examination of the zinc circuit middling stream prior to regrinding suggested that production of zinc concentrate from the zinc circuit middling stream should be possible by rearranging existing plant equipment. Laboratory testing of samples of plant products, however, showed that regrinding combined wi th the usual reagent suite was nO1 sufficient to produce a zinc concentrate of the required specifications.Examination of the process water highlighted a problem with dissolved salts in the circuit water, which was solved by in-circuit precipitation of the dissolved ions with soda ash. Implementation of the procedure in the concentrator effectively transferred to the zinc concentrate all sphalerite previously recovered to the LGM concentrate.

Underground operations commenced at Tower Colliery in late 1978 and the early prevailing mining conditions in the worked seam were considered poor as a result of high stress and geological disturbances. This suggested that outbursting activity may be a possibility. The colliery has since recorded a total of 13 individual outburst incidents, all of which have been associated with the same dyke and strike-slip fault zone. This paper depicts the geological conditions and presents the results of investigations undertaken at the time of these outbursts.

Changes have recently been applied to the Sullivan Concentrator lead and zinc circuits to treat fine-grained ores which make-up the majority of ore reserves in the mine. Pilot plant testwork conducted in 1990 - 91 indicated that concentrate grades would be substantially improved by reducing the particle size (Pao) of the lead from 38 to 15 ¦m and the zinc from 45 to 24 ¦m. Circuit revisions involved installation of major new equipment including: two 600-kilowatt Vertimills for regrinding, a four metre diametre column flotation cell and a four metre diameter hyperbaric pressure filter for dewatering. Duties of the existing regrind mills were Reassigned.

This paper highlights the importance of accurate observational technical reports compiled by Mining Geologists and Engineers. Before uncovering the original reports in July 1992, all previous investigations discounted returning to old mining areas on the belief that all operations were suspended because they were 'unpayable'. However, the detail of the original reports removed any doubt of the economic value of retrieving remnant ore.The important feature was that the description of 'unpayable' by GMA could be equated to 11.6 - 35 g/t over the history of the mine. On the basis of these reports the Morning Star mine has been re-opened.

The paper presents the results of chlorination of beneficiated rutile and struverite (a tantalum-niobium bearing, rutile type mineral in alluvial tin deposits) by carbon tetrachloride in the range 623¦K to 773¦K. The chlorination of rutile could reach near completion at 773¦K in about an hour. The process was found to follow a modified pore-blocking law, with the basic reaction constant K varying inversely with the particle size, so that the basic process may be a reaction under interface control (chemical control) as modified by the pore blocking effect. The pore blocking factors for the various experimental conditions were evaluated and the predicted curves showed good agreement with the experimental data. In the case of Struverite, a similar kinetic behaviour was observed but the chlorination process was relatively slower than that in rutile. It was also observed that in struverite, niobium got chlorinated faster, followed by tantalum and titanium, indicating a good possibility of separation by chlorination using carbon tetrachloride.

Social licence to operate is not a new concept for the mining industry, referring to stakeholder approval or acceptance for the activities and impacts of a project, company or industry. It is intangible, dynamic and non-permanent, hence it needs to be earned and then maintained (Thomson and Boutilier, 2014). It has also been argued that social licence extends beyond building approval or acceptance, into engagement for long-term development (Owen and Kemp, 2012).There are many examples where stakeholder opposition – or withdrawal of social licence – have increased capital and operating costs, extended schedules and impacted reputation. At its extreme, the withdrawal of social licence to operate can also contribute to or be the catalyst for mine closure.The key benefit of obtaining a social licence is a reduction of risk. Stakeholder support and advocacy, as well as the implementation of social performance programs that contribute to social licence, can be beneficial in terms of schedule, costs and other benefits.While decisions to close a mine are generally driven by resource availability or economic conditions, the social, economic and environmental legacy remaining post-closure is of importance to many stakeholders. With a number of significant mines now approaching closure within Australia, we are seeing heightened community concern about the economic and social impact of mine closure and the success of land rehabilitation. The Great lady gold deposit presented the challenge of providing a new grade control system for an usual type of orebody in the Eastern Goldfields. Mineralisation occurs as secondary enrichment about a quartz sand - granite saprolite contact 30m below surface. The ore horizon, which averaged 2.5m thickness, was near-horizontally disposed in contrast to the typical steeply dipping, shear hosted deposits of the region. A trial mining operation was undertaken on the richest, most continuous portion of the deposit to test the economic viability of this type of orebody. Controlling and minimising vertical ore dilution was considered crucial to the profitability of the operation.An understanding of the grade distribution combined with the practicalities of mining produced a grade control system which allowed for the mining of 1/2rn composited grades on level lm benches. Ore mining was combined with strict monitoring of levels, truck destinations and ore boundaries. Ore reconciliation results showed this system to be effective.

The screening of iron ores, sinter and coke, and investigations undertaken to improve screening efficiency and cloth life are discussed. The major modifications to coke screening proposed with the construction of No. 7 coke ovens battery are briefly described. The major problem areas were identified as screen cloth blinding and pegging, feed presentation and screen overloading. Blinding and pegging have had a significant effect upon screening efficiency with the screening of sinter, coke breeze and wet iron ores in particular. Pegging can be reduced or eliminated by the correct selection of aperture size and shape, screen excitation and slope, and screening medium. Blinding encountered with wet coke breeze was a particular problem in which no significant progress was made.

Incorporating industry best practice waste rock management methods can be a relatively straight forward task when preparing management documentation, such as an acid and metalliferous drainage management plan (AMDMP). However, a key difficulty is the incorporation of industry best practice methods that are practical and non-compromising on their purpose from a scientific standpoint. The second key difficulty is the implementation of these practical methods as various operational groups/departments are typically relied upon to execute and take ownership of different tasks or procedures.One approach to overcoming these difficulties is to develop an AMD Operations Manual (AMDOM) that:•Incorporates, where practicable and without compromising scientific merit, existing processes that those groups/departments ultimately responsible for the execution of the management action are familiar with; and•Provides standalone, simplistic, and easy to follow procedures for site personnel. The purpose of the standalone operations manual is to ensure site personnel who are responsible for undertaking specific procedures, have clear, step-by-step instructions for an individual procedure, without requiring interpretation and understanding of the more comprehensive AMDMP.In adopting a best practice approach to waste rock management for their iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, Roy Hill developed an AMD Management System that is comprised of both an AMDMP and an AMDOM that are connected through adaptive management processes.
