PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is gold and silver mine located in Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. Mining activities in PT.IMK is conducted in Bantian pit area by applying surface mining method and using combination of excavator and hauler (articulated dump truck and rigid haul truck) as the transportation for ore to the crushing plant and waste material to the waste dump. Current blasting practice is ore-waste blasting. Ore-waste blasting is the term where the ore and waste rock are blasted in the same blasting process. Blasting is conducted by using nonel initiation system. By multiple pits operation, monthly powder factor is varied from 0.23 kg/t to 0.27 kg/t. Emulsion blend with density 1.15 g/cc is used as bulk explosive. At this stage, the concept of geoblast is proposed as an engineering tool for Drill and Blast engineering practice in PT.IMK. In addition, there is a need to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting, to maintain monthly powder factor, and to maintain excavator’s productivity. Next, the concept of scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) and the concept of blastability index (Lilly, 1986) are proposed as geoblast’s tools to improve blasting practice in PT.IMK. It is expected that rock fragmentation by blasting, explosive consumption and excavator’s productivity will be maintained by integration of geoblast and drill and blast engineering. Furthermore, the objective of this paper is to integrate geoblast and drill and blast engineering in order to create an engineering guideline in PT.IMK. Additionally, blasting trials with air decking application is proposed in order to support the geoblast’s improvement. It is planned that these blasting trials will be conducted in 2022. In conclusion, it can be seen that integration of geoblast and D&B engineering in PT.IMK is relevant to improve current drill and blast current practice and applicable to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting.

Like many industries the coal mining industry has, since the beginning of this century, undergone many changes. Technological advances and the increasing demand for fossil fuels have introduced new mining methods and techniques which allow the extraction of thicker and deeper coal seams at higher rates of production. Most new methods of mining (or for that matter any other processes) introduce problems which the engineers of the industry are expected to face and resolve. Unfortunately, spontaneous combustion has plagued the coal mining industry since the first attempts to mine coal, and is no doubt partly responsible for the reputation that coal mining is a hazardous industry. The financial loss and toll of human lives due to the occurrence of spontaneous combustion of coal in coal mines is enormous, if not incalculable. Its occurrence today is less likely to claim lives, due to both improved methods of working and in the detection of spontaneous combustion sites.

One of the major causes of accidents and loss of production in underground mines is falls of ground.As mines go deeper, higher stresses are encountered and strain energy stored in the rocks is more likely to be released dynamically. This results in bumping in the rock mass around a stope or development face. Such noises and increasingly difficult ground conditions are obviously a warning of more serious problems ahead. The activity is collectively referred to as rock bursting.In Australia the mining of metalliferous deposits is taking place at increasing depths at Mt Isa, Broken Hill and the Eastern Goldfields and ground control problems with rock bursts has already been experienced at all three sites.

KiwiRail has a goal of significantly improving passenger rail services to west Auckland, as part of its DART (Developing Auckland’s Rail Transport) suite of projects. The New Lynn Rail Trench (NLRT) project was a significant component of this work. The NLRT project facilitates essential doubletracking of the Western Auckland line, and provides a new commuter transportation hub within a busy town centre.The 1.5 km stretch of track through the New Lynn town centre has bisected the township for over 80 years. Double-tracking the line provided the opportunity to grade-separate road and rail, which would help to re-connect both sides of the township and enhance public amenity and safety.KiwiRail employed an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) procurement model engaging a consortium comprising Fletcher Construction, Beca Infrastructure and Synergine to develop a Design and Construct solution.With weak soil conditions and high groundwater levels, a diaphragm wall construction method to form the trench walls was selected as the best solution. Further challenges to construction included working within a narrow rail corridor constrained by buildings along much of the boundary, and a requirement to keep the existing line open for rail services. Detailed construction planning was required to ensure rail and construction safety in a constrained space whilst building the trench walls, propping these walls during excavation, and constructing the base slab in the most efficient way possible.This paper will detail the geotechnical conditions and the additional constraints that made this rail trench a challenging structure to design. It will also describe the fi nal design and construction methodologies that were employed, that allowed very successful completion of the project.Additionally, this paper will review the design and construction lessons applicable to the current Victoria Park Tunnel project, and indeed for all future cut and cover tunnel projects in the Auckland isthmus.

Comalco Limited has recently completed construction of a $50 million kaolin plant at the site of its bauxite mining and industrial minerals operations at Weipa. The plant will produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of coating grade kaolin for the paper industry.Comalco produced the first coating kaolin from the deposit in 1979 on a trial basis. Since then a variety of quality coating grades with specific particle ize distributions and brightness values have been prepared.Extensive drilling and bulk sampling of the deposit over eight years has shown that the orebody is large and of a high grade suitable for the production of premium quality coating kaolins.The processing plant technology was developed by Comalco in association with the European kaolin and equipment producer Amberger Kaolinwerke GmbH (AKW).The Weipa kaolin plant is the first of this size to be built in the Pacific Basin region and it will offer the region's paper-coating mills a stable and reliable source of high-quality kaolin, shipped from an established bulk loading port. The paper provides an overview of the development of the kaolin investment, the nature of the production process and details the project management procedure used for the design, construction and commissioning of the plant. Three areas of significant interest, the gas turbine fired pray dryer, the moving bridge shiploader and the use of aerobelt conveyors on the project are detailed.

The Favona adularia-sericite epithermal Au-Ag deposit is located at the southern end of the Hauraki Goldfield, about one kilometre southeast of the world-class Martha deposit. The deposit occurs in Late Miocene andesitic lava flows and local dacitic tuffs of the Waipupu Formation. In some places, post-mineralisation ash fall and ignimbrite, up to 50 m thick, cover mineralised rocks and andesite. We collected soils samples from 110 sites along eight traverses over Favona, and from three regional lines: two south of Favona, and one north of Favona.   Analyses of soils identify prominent enhanced concentrations of Au, Ag, and Hg, and lower enrichments of Sb and As. At Favona, Au and Ag appear to be highly anomalous in areas over mineralisation with Au concentrations greater than 100 ppb and Ag concentrations greater than 1000 ppb, whereas background concentrations are approximately 5 ppb and 50 ppb respectively. The background concentrations of Hg in soils are approximately 100 - 200 ppb, but in mineralised areas, Hg generally exceeds 200 ppb, and some soils contain greater than 600 ppb. Antimony shows enrichments, although weak, above known veins and As locally shows some enrichment above areas of known mineralisation. Therefore, soil sampling at Favona defines geochemical anomalies that correlate with the position of known mineralisation at depth. Thus, there is strong empirical support for the use of Au, Ag and Hg, and possibly Sb and As geochemistry to identify mineralised trends associated with buried deposits at other epithermal prospects.

In the narrow stopes of South African gold mines, rockbreaking is carried out by drilling and blasting with safety fuse and igniter cord being used as the initiation system. The fuse/gniter cord system is used primarily because of its low cost, however several limitations of this method include: inaccurate delay time, unreliable firing, inflexible application to varied configurations, and the absence of dynamic interaction between holes. Alternative initiation systems that incorporate millisecond timing are being developed to overcome the limitations of fuse(tgniter cord systems. Current investigations by the Stoping Technology Division of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) into the effects of millisecond initiation are being conducted at a deep test site. Experimental blasts using various millisecond delays and the independent firing of holes with fuse/igniter cord are being studied in order to quantify the influence of delay time on the blasting process and to identify the best methods of applying millisecond initiation systems. The effect of design variables such as delay time, hole firing pattern, stemming, and panel layout are discussed. Blast results including throw distance and direction, muckpile profile and rock cleaning times are used in the discussion of different combinations of blasting variables.

"AEROPHINE® 3418A Promoter is a well-known and widely used collector and is an industry standard for its excellent selectivity and efficacy in the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide ores, particularly those containing silver. Until now, however, it has not found widespread use in primary nickel flotation.In an effort to increase nickel recovery without compromising selectivity over iron sulfides, Western Areas Forrestania Nickel operation trialled the use of AEROPHINE® 3418A as a secondary collector at low dosage. A series of ON/OFF trials were conducted, with the finding that a very low dose of AEROPHINE® 3418A increased nickel recovery by 0.6 per cent compared to using xanthate alone.This paper provides a brief operational history and overview of the Forrestania operations, a description of the trial and an analysis of the results.Citation:Emery, S, Flynn, M, Tan, K and Munro, C, 2016. Tomago sandbeds is an unconfined coastal aquifer located 20km. north of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. These sandbeds extend over an area of about 130km. The average aquifer depth is about 20m. with a mean transmissivity of about 400sq.m/day and a specific yield of about 0.2. The city of Newcastle and surrounding areas derive water from Tomago for potable purposes. The average extraction being about 50 ML/day. The iron value of the ground water varies between 5 and 15mg/1. This iron is removed by a conventional water treatment plant using Alum. The aquifer whilst principally quartzose also contains deposits of heavy minerals like rutile, zircon, ilmenite, etc., The mineral sand mining has been in progress at Tomago since 1972. Mining is carried out in a con- structed pond with a water depth of about 5m. on which is floated a suction cutter dredge that moves across the front of the pond using a water jet to entrain the soil from the ground surface to the bottom of the mineralised zone. Effect of mineral sand mining on ground water quality, particularly iron, was the subject of intensive investigations undertaken at Tomago since 1970. The effect on water quality was studied by collecting and analysing water samples from network of observation wells established during the period of mining. Water samples were collected about 4-5 years prior to mining and analysed for iron, sulphate, chloride, pH, etc., After mining the observation wells were re-established at the same locations and water samples were collected and analysed for at least 5 years after mining. In 1983 the New South Wales (NSW) Government began to construct a 35 km freight rail line to provide additional rail capacity to Port Kembla in the Illawarra region, south of Sydney, through a direct connection between the Unanderra to Moss Vale line at Dombarton to the Main South rail line at Maldon in the Southern Highlands. The project area lies within the carefully managed Sydney Water catchment and is also underlain by previous coal mining activities.Construction of the line halted in 1988 prior to its completion after the NSW Government reassessed the demand case and found that the project was not as viable as originally forecast. However, by this stage the line was partially constructed, including the majority of civil earthworks, approach structures to the main river crossings and establishing the portals for the Avon tunnel as a precursor to major tunnelling works.In 2012, the Commonwealth Government funded Transport for NSW to undertake the necessary engineering and environmental preconstruction works. Most importantly here, the 1980s rail link was predicated upon the use of electrically powered locomotives, whereas the locomotive fleet in operation today in NSW is diesel powered. This fact has a significant impact upon the approach and development of the Avon tunnel section, as the diesel powered locomotives combined with the length and grade of the tunnel alignment produces a unique set of conditions requiring specialist engineering design and systems to ensure safe and functional operation of the railway through the tunnel section.Given the above, the Avon tunnel will need to be supported by a ventilation and smoke control design based on the heat rejection from the locomotive consist, consideration of ambient air quality compliance, comparison against in-tunnel air quality goals, and providing safety systems in line with the fire and life safety strategy it requires.This paper explores the current development of both the tunnel civil works responding to the geography, geology, rail functional requirements, as well as the tunnel ventilation systems being revised to suit the diesel locomotives.Further, this paper describes the importance of combining the design outcomes with the procurement methodology in order to achieve the project objectives, a functional outcome and value for money across the project life.CITATION:Baker, T and Bagis, A, 2014. Pre-concentration of low grade ores via the rejection of low/no value materials based on fragment size is the subject of many published papers and studies over the past decade. However, the possibility of upgrading should not limited to low grade ores given the high cost of capital, energy, water, reagents, and ultimately tailings storage across the mining industry. Mining and processing facilities at Olympic Dam consist of an: 1) underground mine where ore is extracted via sublevel open stoping and 2) integrated processing plant located on the surface which produces Cu-cathode, Au-Ag bullion and uranium oxide concentrate. Blasted ore is trucked/trained to underground crushers which produce an ore feed with a product size P80 = -145 mm. Crushed ore is then hoisted to the surface and delivered to the ROM pads via an overland conveyor. The typical copper grade of mill feed is approximately 2 wt%. A rapid assessment of the potential to upgrade Olympic Dam mill feed prior to the ROM pads via rejection of low value materials based on fragment size was completed using existing data. Three separate datasets were utilised to assess the deportment of Cu, U, Au across size ranges of 200 mm down to sub-8 m. Cumulative grade vs cumulative mass distribution graphs for each element were produced. This data clearly demonstrates that Cu, U, Au grades remain constant down to ~212 m, which happens to be the liberation size of the sulfides. Hence, no potential to upgrade the ore stream via rejection of +200 mm - to ~212 m sized materials prior to milling. Mineralisation within the Olympic Dam Fe-oxide Cu-U-Au-Ag deposit (IOCG) occurs as disseminated sulfide grains within granite- to hematite-rich breccias. The typical sulfide grain size is sub-200 m that supports the outcomes of the grade deportment by fragment size study.

The current work deals with the measurement of some thermophysical properties of Ca(NO3)2 based ternary nitrate molten salts as HTF (heat transfer fluid) / TES (Thermal Energy Storage) material for CSP (Concentrating solar power) plants. The density and viscosity of different compositions of the ternary salt mixture containing Ca(NO3)2, NaNO3 and KNO3 close to the liquidus has been experimentally measured. An attempt has also been made to measure the melting point of the salt using the cooling curve technique as well as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric analysis has also been performed to estimate the peak operating temperature of the salt. Compatibility of suitable pipe material (SS304) with molten salt has also been discussed. The salt mixture proves to be a viable alternative to the already existing HTFs like Therminol VP-1 (organic oil) or Solar Salt® in regards to its lower melting point, wider operating range, low cost, nontoxicity, sufficiently high density and comparable viscosity.

This paper describes in detail the controlled blasting adopted and the measurements undertaken for the successful excavation of large twin tunnels under a shallow cover for a six-lane highway project in India. The tunnels are D-shaped, each 15 m in diameter, and the cover between the tunnels and the existing railway track was about 14 m. These twin tunnel tubes were characterised by two separate three-lane carriageways for each direction of traffic, and were planned with about 25 m of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) portals at the entrance and exit of the tunnels. The major challenge of the project was the blasting of tunnels in rock below an operating railway line. As the tunnels approached the area below the railway line, the ground vibrations were monitored vertically above the blasting faces and on the railway track sleepers. Vibration intensities between those generated from tunnel blasting and those from the movement of the trains were compared, and it was found that the vibrations from blasting were lower than those from the moving trains. Though the permissible level of ground vibration based on the Indian Standard (IS) code happens to be 70 mm/s, the maximum charge per delay was calculated restricting this limit to 50 mm/s. This ensured that the vibrations in the vicinity of the railway tracks never exceeded the prescribed limit of 70 mm/s. The surface ground settlement before and after the blasts were also measured using an optical levelling instrument, which confirmed that there was no significant impact on the surface movements due to blasting. Extensometer readings inside the tunnels showed that there was no deformation in the tunnel. Geotechnical instrumentation has been implemented as a key step for monitoring and optimising an engineered mine design for managing seismicity at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine. Measurements of displacement, stress change, ground control element load and seismic response of the rock mass allow for back analysis and calibration of critical parameters for feedback into the engineering design loop. Instrument clusters are installed in strategic locations prior to the commencement of stoping in order to determine the nature of the response of the rock mass to stoping. A selection of instruments including instrumented cable bolts and rod extensometers, resistance wire extensometers, hollow inclusion stress cells, vibrating wire stress meters and resistance wire extensometers are used to gather data through a data logging system. The rate at which data is recorded is adjusted to provide more information during periods of anticipated rapid change such as around stope firings or during periods of high seismic activity, and less information during periods of anticipated quiescence. The twofold purpose of the instrumentation is to calibrate the numerical modelling output which forms the basis of the engineered mine design, and to provide an alert mechanism where the behaviour of the rock mass is not what was anticipated, or where the impact of that behaviour may compromise the integrity of the engineered ground control system. The paper describes the location of instrument clusters with respect to stoping, the type of instruments employed and the method of data acquisition. It provides examples of results obtained and illustrates the way in which that information is used to optimise the mine design and manage seismicity.

CRONIMET Australia in cooperation with Speciality Metals International, the mining lease holder of the Mt Carbine Tungsten mine, have demonstrated the preconcentration and processing of large (>12 million tonnes) tailings and mine waste dumps on site in far north Queensland. The first stage of this project has proven the economic viability of preconcentration using sensor-based particle sorting whilst ensuring high recovery of industry critical tungsten minerals – wolframite and scheelite. Sensor-based sorting technology have enabled the production of a sorter product to feed the existing wet gravity plant ensuring higher recoveries and increasing concentrate production. Processing of 1,000 tonne low grade samples using the TOMRA x-ray transmission (XRT) ore sorter installed on site, has reduced the volume of material entering the downstream wet processing plant by up to 60%. The sorted 10-25mm size range produced the highest upgrade ratio (product/feed) of 24:1 and achieved sorter concentrate grade of 1.52% WO3, sorter waste grades below 0.014% WO3 and metal recoveries of up to 93.4%. The appropriately sized, barren sorter waste material is also sold as aggregate and other quarrying products and thus adding to the overall economic benefit of the project. The utilisation of the sorting technology on site has produced an economically viable project, significantly reduced capital cost, and reduced the time to market of the final tungsten concentrate. The next phase of the project includes design and installation of a larger two sorter plant capable of over 150t/h feedrate.

The first record of coal discovery in Australia dates back to 1791 when escaping convicts found coal in the banks of a creek just south of Newcastle. Development in the Newcastle Coalfield was the sole source of supply for the colony and for export until the 1850s when mines were established in the Southern & Western Coalfields. The important Hunter Coalfield was not discovered until 1873 when coal was found at Rixs Creek near Singleton: The first exploration drillholes were commenced in 1799 using drilling equipment obtained by Sir Joseph Banks. From 1820 to 1850 several famous geologists (naturalists), including the Rev W. B. Clarke, J. D. Dana and Strzelecki, wrote reports on the coal measures in New South Wales. The first Government Geo- logist, Samuel Stutchbury, was appointed in 1850. The major coal deposits of the State are contained in Permian Coal Measures in the Sydney-Gunnedah and Oaklands Basins. Coal quality ranges from high volatile, high moisture thermal coal at Oaklands to low volatile hard coking coal in the Southern Coalfield. Most coalfields can provide a range of steaming and coking coals.

The blasting process involves a complex interaction of a delayed sequence of moving sources of seismic energy which produce nonlinear behaviour near the blast holes. A deterministic description of this nonlinear behaviour represents a formidable problem. The modelling of blast vibrations remote from the blast source may use some of the primary features of the blast design such as charge type, charge weight and initiation sequence. Such modelling of blast vibrations usually assumes linear behaviour remote from the blast holes. Site specific charge weight scaling laws may be used to predict the blast vibration levels with relatively poor accuracy. An important ingredient which is missing from charge weight scaling laws is the seismic source wavelet emanating from each blast hole. The present paper considers some approaches which may be used to determine a suitable source wavelet. The wavelets are suitable for use in the region where linearity may be assumed. In that region, it is possible to model the attenuation and scattering of the seismic wave as it propagates from the blast source to the measurement location.

Central Colliery was developed to exploit large underground reserves in the German Creek lease. It was planned from the outset as a retreating longwall operation and is the first longwall mine in Queensland. Longwall mining is not new to Australia but all previous experience has been confined to the coalfields of New South Wales. There was no precedent for longwall extraction in the markedly different geological setting of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Various investigations were thus carried out during the initial development of Central Colliery, prior to the installation of the longwall, to ascertain the geotechnical characteristics of the coal seam and the adjacent strata and to predict the performance of the heading and pillar design as mining proceeds to depth. Laboratory tests showed the coal to be weak with an unconfined compressive strength of 9.6 MN/m2. Site inspection and geophysical correlation revealed a shear zone and extensive intraformational shear planes in the seam. The latter were found to exert a controlling influence on rib reaction in the headings. This behaviour was predicted by finite element modelling of the development headings which indicated that mining induced stresses in the coal would be relieved by block movement of the ribs. A chain pillar width versus depth curve was established for yielding pillar design based on empirical and computational methods. This gave pillar widths from 25m to 48m over the proposed depth range of 150m to 300m. Finite element modelling of the 25m pillars chosen for the first gateroads confirmed the overall stability of the design but suggested that rib spall could be significant in the adjacent tailgate. Production scheduling of open pit mining is a key area as it deals with the management of operating cash flows of mining companies. The efficiency of long-term schedules is usually assessed with economic criteria such as net present value (NPV), discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR) and payback period, which are not sufficient on their own for revealing the complex picture of the decision-making process.This paper offers a thorough analysis of the most important contemporary criteria of long-term production scheduling, as way to provide the mining practice with a new approach to the decision-making process. The list of criteria includes technological, economic and probabilistic ones. A detailed case study is provided aiming to illustrate the applicability of the criteria for comparing the scheduling approaches regarding the economic interests of a mineÆs owner and contractor. The results obtained can be used for revealing new trends in the current methodology of open-pit production scheduling optimisations.

In Colombia, northeast of Antioquia, there is a gold deposit that has produced continuously since the middle of the XIX century, located within mining title RPP-140, property of Gran Colombia Gold Segovia (GCGS) since 2010. Mining materials are taken to the “María Dama” Processing Plant where 1500 tonnes of materials are processed daily. Before 2010, the previous owner of the mining title processed about 600 tpd and directly discharged almost all tailings, given that they had no capacity to put them into final deposits. El Chocho was conceived as a final tailings deposit to store the pulp produced by the processing plant; it was divided into two phases with two dams (upper dam and lower dam) given that the presence of illegal miners at the lower phase impeded a single dam design. A squatter impeded construction of the upper dam; so afterwards, starting at the higher end was necessary (owned by GCGS), building dam 1B to store tailings in pulp; after the squatter returned the lands to the owner (GCGS), construction of tailings dam 1A was required and thus complete construction of dam 1C or the upper dam. While all of this was happening, GCGS decided to acquire a 1500 tpd filter press which currently dehydrates tailings in order to take them to the valley controlled by dam 1A. Construction of dam 1A was designed following the containment wall model, made with geotextile tubes. These improvements generated reduced pressure on renewable natural resources because water is recirculated and less fresh water contributions are required; less pressure is placed on soil, flora and fauna because the area intervened for tailings storage will have a higher storage capacity and, as such, a longer useful life.
