An 8 ha trial landform was constructed in late 2009 at the Ranger Uranium Mine, located 250 km east of Darwin in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics of northern Australia. The objective of the trial, which comprises two surface cover types on a uniform two per cent slope, is to provide long-term data to guide the development by Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) of its landform closure strategy. The scope of the work program for the landform includes many aspects; however, this paper is focusing on run-off and erosion rates. The run-off and erosion rates are used to assess the long-term geomorphic stability by comparing measured with modelled export rates from a landform evolution model.Monitoring of wet season run-off is undertaken collaboratively by the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (ERISS) and ERA, on four purpose-instrumented 30 m by 30 m erosion plots. Continuous measurements are made in rectangular broad crested (RBC) flumes located at the outflow of each plot, of water level, turbidity (a surrogate for fine suspended sediment) and electrical conductivity (EC) (a surrogate for solutes). Each plot has a tipping bucket pluviometer located near the RBC flume. Bed load is collected monthly.This paper reports the findings of rainfall and bed load from the first two wet seasons (2009 - 2010 and 2010 - 2011) following construction. The field measured loads will be compared with the predictions made by the Cellular Automaton Evolutionary Slope and River (CAESAR) landform evolution model. Initial results indicate that predicted rates of sediment export from the CAESAR model are similar to measured export rates. This provides confidence in the capability of the model to predict stability of the future rehabilitated mine area, especially during the critical initial years following construction. A major breakthrough in extending the life of the wear material of high pressure roll crushers when treating moist, highly abrasive material has removed the last impediment to the widespread acceptance of high pressure comminution in the minerals industry. The system is very energy efficient. It has been demonstrated that in the cement industry energy savings of up to 50 per cent have been achieved compared to conventional hall milling. Besides being energy efficient, the process provides some remarkable and useful effects; ò better liberation of mineral constituents (as proven for diamond liberation). ò preferential comminution where induced micro fissures follow grain boundaries. ò higher reactivity of the product due to micro fissures. All these points will be described here together with a review of current flowsheet design and incentives for the use of this method of Comminution.

"The IsaMill™ was originally developed to address liberation issues at Mount Isa Mines (now Glencore) operations, McArthur River and Mount Isa in the early 1990s. Following on from the industrial success at those operations, the IsaMill™ was commercialised. In the year 2000, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) became the first external user of the technology with a 1.1 MW M3000 IsaMill™ installed to supplement the roaster capacity at its Gidji Processing Plant. The IsaMill™ was used to ultra-fine grind about 10 t/h of pyrite flotation concentrate to 10–12 µm prior to gold cyanide leaching. Based on the success of the Gidji installation, another was installed at the processing plant at KCGM’s Fimiston operation in 2002 in a similar duty.In 2014, a 3 MW M10 000 IsaMill™ was selected to replace the roasters at Gidji as part of the A$98 M emissions reduction project. The mill was commissioned in April 2015 at the design 30 t/h, allowing the immediate shutdown of the two roasters. Replacement of roasting with ultra-fine grinding completely eliminated air emissions at Gidji while maintaining overall plant production rates.This paper details the history of the IsaMill™ at KCGM from the original M3000 to the latest M10 000. This paper outlines the advances made in vacuum filtration as developed by Outomec Process Filters and details the results obtained at a number of Australian installations. The first section of the paper details the technical advances made by the use of ceramic media in vacuum filtration and explains the reasons for the use of the technology. The second part of the paper discusses a number of Australian installations of the ceramic vacuum filter and where possible compares the actual experiences with those predicted from the test work which preceded the installations. The Ceramec Capillary Vacuum Filter is a vacuum disc filter which combines the proven mechanical attributes of a disc filter with exciting new ceramic vacuum technology from Outomec of Finland.

For some time fine coal (-0.5 mm) flot ation has been considered as a bulk flotation problem. Combinations of hydrocarbon oils and frothers have been used as surface active agents in coal flotation. The selectivity of the flotation process has always been poor in such cases. With the increase in fine coal production due to mining methods and coal handling systems, optimisation of fine coal treatment.has become important. Petrographic and mineralogical composit- ions of coal particles have been reported to influence their flotability. The problem becomes more complex due to surface oxidation of coal and the presence of slime forming clay minerals in the run of mine coal. In this paper, the flotation problem is examined on the basis of various constituents of coal and their associated gangue minerals. The selection of reagents has been suggested on the basis of their surface chemical properties. Factors such as surface modific- ation of coal and gangue materials, flotation kinetics and hydrocarbon oil - coal inter- action have been critically evaluated to improve fine coal flotation recovery.

The history of Ore Reserve classification and reporting in Australia is largely a history of the Australian mining industry itself. In the late 1800s, when the industry was dominated by small scale, high grade underground mines, Reserves (if estimated) were based on hand sampling and geological inference, and reporting of Reserves was either non-existent or of extremely variable quality. By the mid-20th century, the industry was dominated by large underground base metal and gold mines. Reserve estimation was coming under the control of skilled geologists and mining engineers, however Reserve classification and reporting standards continued to vary in type and quality from mine to mine. Today, large scale, low grade mining operations predominate, and Reserve estimates are generally based on extensive drilling results processed (with geological control) by computer. Through the efforts of a Joint Committee established by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Australian Mining Industry Council, Reserve and Resource classification and public reporting has been standardised and controlled by adoption of the ""Australasian Code for the Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves"" released in 1989. The Code, which will continue to be modified and improved by the Joint Committee, has also been used as a basis for guides to reporting in other countries, and there is now some hope that this difficult and vexing topic may finally become subject to international standards and controls.

The Merlin project is situated 130 km south of Cloncurry in North West Queensland, Australia. It is located within the Pre-Cambrian Mt Isa Inlier and is grouped within the Eastern Fold Belt. The host rocks are metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Kuridala and Staveley Formations adjacent to the Mount Dore Granite.Merlin zone represents part of the Mount Dore polymetallic deposit containing copper, zinc, silver, gold, lead, cobalt and most recently has been found to host molybdenum mineralisation. This is intimately associated with economic grades of rhenium, a naturally occurring metal that is an important component of high temperature aircraft engines. The host rock sequence is a 200 m thick zone of metasediments sandwiched between competent granite in the hanging wall and brittle quartzite in the foot wall. A distinct shear marks the contact between the granite and metasediments. The host rocks are comprised of three main rock types: black shale, phyllite and altered banded calc-silicate.Mineralisation dips to the east at approximately 45° in a package of fine grained pelites and banded calc-silicates. The top 150 m of the sequence is typified by black shale and phyllite. The lower 50 m is typified by pink banded calc-silicate. The main molybdenite zone is located at and parallel to the pelite-calc-silicate contact. Down dip, the zone splits into two or three veins hosted by the calc-silicate rock suite and haloed by thin, steep dipping, stylolitic molybdenite veinlets.The deposit was discovered in 2008 by routine infill reverse circulation sampling conducted for the Mount Dore copper deposit. One hole penetrated below the main target Cu horizon and intersected visible molybdenite. During 2009 and 2010 a 50 × 50 m diamond drill pattern delineated a total mineral resource of 6.7 Mt @ 1.3 per cent Mo, 23g/t Re, 0.3 per cent Cu (mostly Indicated Mineral Resource with minor Inferred Mineral Resource). The resource has been estimated using ordinary kriging within grade domains. Access to the deposit has commenced via a decline and production through the nearby Osborne flotation concentrator (70 km south) is expected in 2012. All facilities and resources are fully owned and operated by Ivanhoe Australia Limited, a public listed company on the Australian and Toronto stock exchanges.

The historic city of Charters Towers in North Queensland is underlain by an extensive labyrinth of old mine workings in a large number of flat lying, subparallel, main and cross-cutting cross reefs extending of the order of 5 km along strike and down to a depth of 700 m in parts. These old workings produced over 6.6 million ounces of gold at a grade of over one ounce to the tonne prior to closure in 1920.Citigold is progressing the development of a modern, high productivity, low cost new mine to extract extensions of these reefs as well as other as yet un-mined reefs. To do this it is changing the paradigm for operating in such circumstances. This paper first briefly reviews the setting for the development and then discusses the philosophies and concepts that Citigold is proposing to use, harnessing technology to create a mine that exemplifies more productive and safer mining based on operating in the digital age.The paper addresses how a modern approach is being applied to the planning of a mechanised, deep, narrow vein, hard rock gold mine under a city. It also describes briefly the successful æexperimentationÆ with longhole open stoping methods developed at the companyÆs small underground operation (the Imperial Mine) to the south of the city, which will also be expanded substantially as part of the Charters Towers Gold Project.The paper also addresses the development of new and/or modified technologies in the venture, with the objective of pursuing continuous and autonomous mining methods. This paper presents the results of in-situ and laboratory investigations into a mining method which utilises conventional continuous mining techniques to carry out two passes in thick coal seams, resulting in the development of stable pillars with relatively small width dimensions and heights up to 6 m. Geotechnical investigations included structural mapping, brightness logging and standard laboratory testing. Virgin stress was measured using overcoring techniques. Two approaches to pillar design were used in the study. These were; pillar design based on empirical formulae and laboratory testing, and pillar disign using calibrated mathematical models. A trial panel was developed at 300 m depth to study pillar deformation and stress changes due to mining. The extent of rib deformation was studied using borescopes and extensometers. In-situ geotechnical measurements were used to calibrate displacement discontinuity and finite element mathematical models of the coal seam. These models were then used to predict the behaviour of a small panel of pillars which were to be developed to 6 m height. The mining method was shown to be feasible provided adequate rib support was installed. The benefit of rib support was found to be two-fold, in that it increased confinement of the pillar in zones of low horizontal stress, while reducing horizontal stress relaxation in zones of high horizontal virgin stress. The possiblity of roof control by designing the small pillars to yield on retreat is discussed.

Following the preparation of tantalum oxide and carbide (1) an investigation of the details relating to the production of tantalum metal powder was planned. From the literature (2) it was evident that tantalum could be produced either by reduction of potassium tantalum fluoride with an alkali metal or by electrolysis of a fused salt mixture containing a tantalum compound. The latter method appeared to be the more suitable and, as there was considerable divergence of opinion in the literature as to the nature of the reactions involved, it was decided to study the electrolytic process. The ultimate aim in any case was to produce tantalum pOWder for use in an investigation of the problems relating to the preparation of consolidated tantalum.FACTORS GOVERNING ELECTROLYSISAfter a few preliminary exploratory electrolyses several factors which needed amplification were revealed. These will be mentioned before the details of the electrolysis experiments are given.COMPOSITION OF THE BATHWithout the knowledge gained in the preliminary experiments it would be thought that the best material for the bath would be that one which underwent electrolytic decomposition. Consider what at first appeared the most likely - namely - potassium tantalum fluoride. The melting point of K2TaF7 was determined to be 630°C with volatilization and decomposition taking place at that temperature so that it would not have been very satisfactory.

The reduction in the number and duration of machinery and equipment failures is an important source of economical efficiency enhancement in the Polish coal mining industry.Non-dismantling methods have been thus developed to evaluate the technical state of machines. Among these viroacoustical methods are the most effectively employed. Two-directional organisation of the testing can be chosen, such as periodical and continuous inspection. The monitoring methods for ball bearing, rope tension uniformity, longwall shearers, main fans and shafts installations etc. Instrumentation for monitoring measurements are either of intrinsically - safe or explosion - proof construction, which enables using them in a gas-hazard atmosphere. The development of these procedures has led to the trials to insert the diagnostic methods into the organisational scheme of a coal mine.

The preamble to the mining Act sets out that such Act is to provide for the encouragement and regulation of mining within the State of Queensland. This paper will attempt to follow the legislative path of such aim and in particular to show what part Mining Wardens play in the administration of the Mining Act.The Mining Act empowers the Governor in Council to constitute Mining Districts and Mining Fields and to appoint any duly qualified officer of the Public Service of Queensland to be a Warden or a Mining Registrar. As a matter of practice Stipendiary Magistrates who hold office in the major centre within a Mining District are appointed Wardens and Clerks of the Court are appointed Mining Registrars. In some districts where there is no Stipendiary Magistrate the Clerk of the Court is appointed an Acting Warden with all the powers of a Warden. Every Warden so appointed is a Warden for the whole State.To achieve impartiality Section 74 of the Mining Act provides that a Warden shall not hold or be entitled (directly or indirectly) to the benefits of any share or interest in a mining tenement or mining venture and provides a penalty of $1000 or imprisonment for six months or both, for contravention of such section.

Ingress of air into the longwall goaf environment needs to be managed appropriately to reduce the risk of creating a spontaneous combustion event. The maingate goaf edge is an area of particular concern in this respect, as air often penetrates for some distance into the goaf along this region inbye of the longwall face. Since the flow rate in this part of the goaf is also quite low, an opportunity exists to disrupt the air pathway by implementing a barrier to the airflow. Previous attempts using plugs made from an assortment of materials have resulted in varying degrees of success. More recently, Narrabri Coal Operations (NCO) has introduced the use of a chemical foam that is mixed with nitrogen to produce a standing barrier with the consistency of shaving cream. The implementation of this practice has consistently proven to be very effective for reducing the oxygen concentration along the maingate goaf edge by systematically retreating the foaming unit with the longwall. This paper presents how the foam is applied in the underground goaf environment to prevent oxygen ingress and uses results from gas monitoring to confirm the foam effectiveness.

In this era of rising focus on the social and environmental costs and benefits of mining operations, the valuation methodologies used to assess such impacts become increasingly important. Within an industry dominated by an engineering culture that places emphasis on net present value (NPV) calculations using high discount rates, difficulties often arise when attempting to justify projects with longer-term, harder to quantify benefits. This is particularly so when these benefits fall in the social and environmental domains and involve other stakeholders. In this paper, we summarise the results of a recent literature review on this subject, which focused on the valuation of æBeyond ComplianceÆ initiatives in the mining sector. We discuss a range of approaches including the quantification of hidden internal costs, financial methods of incorporating risk into calculations, the integration of quantitative and qualitative information, and also the valuation of æexternalitiesÆ or costs and benefits borne by others. We then use a series of examples relating to the management of water in the minerals industry to illustrate how some of these approaches could be applied. There are high-level commitments from both individual companies and groups such as the ICMM to incorporate sustainable development criteria into decision-making processes within the industry. We conclude the paper by arguing that, to meet these commitments, there is a need for the industry to adopt a broader range of valuation methodologies than appears to be the case at present.

Remedial options for a waste rock dump (WRD) were considered as part of closure planning studies at an active mine in Western Australia. To minimise the impact of any seepage from the landform it was determined that placement cover system utilising the moisture ‘store-and-release’ concept was appropriate. The purpose of the cover system was to:•Reduce net infiltration of meteoric water to attenuate peak concentrations for contaminants of concern in natural receptors to levels that can be assimilated without adverse impact to the surrounding ecosystem; •Provide a growth medium for establishment of a sustainable vegetation canopy; and •Improve current quality of surface water runoff from waste storage areas.The project comprised several phases of work: materials characterisation, numerical soil-plant-atmosphere (SPA) modelling and finally cover system construction and monitoring equipment installation.CITATION:Barritt, R, 2018. This paper attempts to highlight some of the problems encountered in the economic exploitation of the deeper coal seams by opencast mining methods. The major cost elements of three methods of overburden removal are examined in relation to the overall cost of winning coal from deeper-lying coal seams. The three overburden removal methods examined are dragline stripping and two systems combining dragline stripping with shovels and trucks at varying depths of overburden. A dragline is, undoubtedly, the most cost effective system of overburden removal for depths of up to 30 metres but it is suggested that, when dealing with incremental overburden depths in excess of 30 metres, engineers should consider carefully the possibility of using a shovel and truck operation, or other system, to augment the use of a dragline.

Any future developer of underground mining on the Bendigo goldfield will need to understand the unique geology and gold occurrence of this field. The development and sloping system employed will be primarily designed around these unique features. Modern techniques and equipment used in narrow vein mining will be applicable in this situation.The purpose of this paper is to examine the important geological features of the field as well as the known historical occurrences of the type of gold deposition in the ore bodies. This information will point to a system of development and extraction which will accommodate these features.
