MANY are the salts produced. by Nature in various regions and parts of the world, as Pliny shows in his History. Likewise, many are the differences among things that are salty and from which salt can be extracted, as, for instance, all the lyes from any kind of ashes and the urine of all animals. But because these are not things that give men the useful elements necessary to life, I shall omit speaking of them in detail with the exception of some of the more notable ones, and I shall tell you that I find that men proceed in only two ways in order to have a sufficiency for their needs. One is that of extracting it from the salty waters of the sea itself, or from springs, with a certain technique [34v] adapted to the places, either by congealing or by evaporation; and the other is that of mining it from the earth. The latter salt is clear and beautiful, and it is mined from mountains, already made by Nature in the form of stone without the aid of art. Twenty-nine laboratory steels were studied to determine the effects of composition and ferrite grain size on drop-weight and Charpy V-notch transition temperatures. The experimental steels covered the following ranges in composition.. 0.10 to 0.32 pct C, 0.30 to 1.31 pct Mn, 0.02 to 0.43 pct Si, md nil to 0.136 pct acid-soluble Al. Although most of the data were obtained on hot-rolled samples, some plates were heat-treated in order to cover a wider range in ferrite grain size. The experimental data were used for a multiple-correlation analysis conducted with the aid of an electronic computer. The study showed that carbon raises and that manganese, silicon, aluminum, and finer ferrite grains lower both drop-weight and Charpy transition temperatures. Quantitatively, variations in composition and grain size have a more marked effect on V15 Charpy transition temperatures than on the drop-weight transition temperature. Useful correlations were found between transition temperatures in drop-weight tests and those defined by seven different criteria for Charpy tests. Evidence was accumulated that the conditions ordinarily used for drop-weight tests are more severe for 1-1/4-in. -thick plate than for 5/8- to 1-in. -thickplate. PROJECT SR-151, to study quantitatively the effects of metallurgical variables on performance in the drop-weight test, was established by the Ship Structure Committee late in 1958 on recommendation of the National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council. This project was initiated as a result of the increasing use of the drop-weight (nil-ductility) test in predicting the ductile-to-brittle behavior of steel. Qualitative data indicated the drop-weight was not as sensitive to metallurgical variables as the Charpy V-notch test. Furthermore, the available information indicated that the drop-weight test did not show the superiority of killed steels over semikilled steels reflected by Charpy tests. This difference in sensitivity to brittle fracture is considered important because the drop-weight transition temperature has been reported1 to correlate better with service-temperature failures than the V-notch test does at a constant energy level. Therefore, this project was concerned with establishing quantitatively the effects of metallurgical variables in the drop-weight test. For comparison, Charpy V-notch data were obtained for the steels investigated. This paper summarizes the results of the investigation. Most of the steels used for the study were made and processed in the laboratory. However, some tests were also made on commercial killed steels available from Project SR-139 (SSC-141). During the course of the investigation, data were obtained on the effects of carbon, silicon, manganese, and aluminum on transition temperatures of drop-weight and Charpy specimens. In addition, the effects of heat treatment which changed the ferrite grain size and the transition temperatures were also investigated. Finally a few exploratory studies were made on commercial killed steels to evaluate the effects of plate thickness, grain size, and heat treatment on the performance of drop-weight specimens. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Preparation of Materials. A total of twenty-nine 500-lb induction-furnace heats were made and processed in the laboratory for the investigation. Carbon, manganese, silicon, and aluminum contents were systematically varied. Melting and rolling techniques proven satisfactory in a previous project2 were used as a guide for the current investigation. Composition. The composition of the twenty-nine laboratory heats made for this project are given in Table I. The steels are divided into three groups. The first group consists of ten aluminum-killed steels similar in composition to Class C ship-plate steel. The second group consists of ten semikilled or Class B type steels. In both of these groups the carbon and manganese contents were intentionally varied over a wide range. This wide range in composition was helpful in obtaining quantitative data from a limited number of steels. The primary purposes of these two groups of steels was to determine the effects of carbon, manganese, and deoxidation practice. In addition, one steel in each group (Steels 2-2 and 9-2) were made about 1 year after the start of the program in order to check consistency of melting practice. The third group of nine steels listed in Table I was intended for studies on the effects of silicon and aluminum. Rocks of the Precambrian Shield of Rusk County, Wis., were recognized as a favorable host for volcanogenic base metal deposits by personnel of Bear Creek Mining Co. Most of the county is covered by a thick layer of glacial drift: consequently, geophysical techniques played a prominent role in the exploration program conceived and initiated there in 1966. The original work on three Precambrian exposures was followed by an airborne electromagnetic survey and subsequent ground follow-up. A geophysical evaluation of air-borne anomaly F-22 defined a target which was interpreted as a massive sulfide body. Numerous potential field and electrical tools were utilized to describe the geometry and physical properties of the target. Drilling confirmed the massive sulfide interpretation and eztentually outlined a 6 million-ton copper deposit.

THIS paper is an effort to explain in a simple manner the fundamental principles involved in examining a clay deposit for both quantity and quality and in operating a clay mine, either open-pit or underground, so that the best quality of finished material can be made from the raw material available. The writer is aware that what is recommended in this paper is everyday practice in many refractories plants and in some other heavy-clay products plants, but observations made while visiting practically every clay mine in Ohio have convinced him that the practices herein discussed are not as widely used as their importance warrants. It is true that the problem of mining for quality is more acute in refractories plants than in most heavy-clay products plants, yet some of the latter are finding it profitable to pay more than ordinary attention to the selection and blending of their raw materials. It is hoped that this short paper may prove helpful to some who are now finding it difficult to produce a uniform product of as high quality as their clay deposit seems to warrant. The coordination of the work of the clay mine or pit with the manufacturing plant, to the end that the best product possible be made from the raw material available, presupposes a rather intimate knowledge of the clay deposit. The knowledge must include not only information of the amount of clay-available but also rather detailed information about both vertical and horizontal variations in quality of the clay. This information should cover three things: quality, quantity, and location.

INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining disturbs the original in-situ conditions which induces a series of strata activities and results in creating "mine pressures," the source of all ground control problems. Adoption of self advancing powered supports in modern longwall mining adds a new dimension to ground control problems and thus research. Roof stability, in general, refers to the integrity and stability of the immediate roof which is measured by the maximum exposed area and time duration without support. There are many factors that con- tribute to roof stability problems. In addition to mining height, rock property and stratum components and caving angle of the immediate roof, characteristics of joints and fissures and their degrees of development, faults and underground water, the operational techniques also play a very important role. This paper summarizes these operational techniques and methods of controlling stable and unstable roof. CLASSIFICATION OF THE IMMEDIATE ROOF There are many ways of classifying the roof (1). Scale is a broad term which includes many types of mineral deposits which have limited solubility in water. These mineral components precipitate when combinations of scale-forming cations and anions exceed their solubility. Scale deposits are tightly bound to each other and to the metal surfaces of a water system. Precipitates that do not readily adhere to each other or to metal surfaces are known as sludges. Sludges are easily removed from a system by flushing. For example, a sludge is formed in the internal treatment of boiler waters with orthophosphates where the calcium is purposely precipitated as hydroxyapatite. Calcium phosphate would have a tendency to adhere to the boiler tubes except for the addition of tannins or lignins. These sludge conditioners maintain the precipitated calcium phosphate as a sludge which can be readily removed by boiler blowdown.

IT is well established that dislocations exist in crystals and account for crystal plasticity.' However, the origins of the dislocations are not clear. Among the means by which dislocations might originate are: a) through crystal growth accidents, b) by the collapse of condensed sheets of vacancies, or c) by stress-induced nucleation. Theoretical calculations' have indicated that the last means should require very high stresses in order to operate. The purpose of this paper is to show that the stresses around the tips of cracks are large enough to nucleate large numbers of dislocation loops. Specifically, it will be shown that (100) cleavage cracks in LiF crystals nucleate dislocations in regions of the crystals where dislocations did not exist previously. It is believed that the use of LiF for this investigation does not restrict the significance of the 1 results. In fact, it is believed that this complements and extends previous papers by the same author which dealt with metal crystals.10,14 The dislocations were detected by means of the etching techniques that were described in a previous paper by Gilman and Johnston.3 In that paper it

In the exploitation of large porphyry type deposits where a cut-off has to be applied and where "internal waste" exists, planning people ask the geologist for the estimated grade of small blocks. Comparison with actual production figures and blast hole assays shows that any kind of weighted average of neighboring DDH (diamond drill hole) samples provides an excessingly smooth picture of reality, resulting most of the time in overevaluation of tons of ore. Solutions based on examination of Past production data exist14 but it would be necessary to have a solution which can be applied before production starts as the preceeding problem also results in an overestimation of the total reserves, often by as much as 20%, thus changing the mine life accordingly and destroying any "optimum planning" which could have been done. The proposed alternative is to forecast the grade distribution of small blocks in a larger block, sufficiently well documented. Several Possible ways to estimate these distributions are reviewed and emphasis is placed on recently developed methods (source G. Matheron) where the coefficients of the orthogonal polynomial series expansion of the distribution of any size of block are directly estimated by kriging. The efficiency of the technique is tested on a level of the Cyprus Pima open pit where the predicted recovery is compared to actual production figures.

WHEN Georgius Agricola, in 155o, dedicated his now famous De re Metallica to the rulers of Saxony, Thuringia, Meissen, and other, smaller principalities, he included in his review of previous works on similar subjects reference to two books written in German: one, an "anonymous, rather disorganized account of assaying for metallic content and of metals," which must be the Probierbüchlein, the other, "dealing - with veins, written by Calbus of Freiberg, a well-known physician."* Calbus is mentioned a second time-and cited-at the end of the Third Book of De re Metallica. Comparison of the citation with the Bergbüchlein leaves no doubt that Agricola considered Calbus of Freiberg the author of the latter work, although all the editions of the Bergbüchlein known now were published anonymously. It is generally accepted by those who have dealt with the bibliography of the Bergbüchleint that Calbus was Ulrich Rülein von Kalbe, who served the City of Freiberg, in Meissen, as health officer in 1497, as member of the City Council in 1509, and as mayor in 1514 and 1519. He died at Leipzig in 1523. In connection with the very garbled description of the mining compass toward the end of Chapter 3 of the Bergbüchlein it is of interest that von Kalbe is supposed to have been not only a physician of repute but a mathematician, astronomer, mine sur-

Layers of magnetic taconite of above average magnetic iron content extend down dip on the Mesabi Range to depths beyond the reach of open pit mining. A selected layer with thickness of 75 to 100 ft underlies many square miles. Such a selected layer can provide over 50 million tons of recoverable concentratc per square mile, at lower concentration ratios than in the present open pit taconite operations. The system contemplated would consist of large scale underground quarrying by a lane and pillar method. Working heights would be 60 to 100 ft; room widths, 50 to 75 ft; and productivity targets, about 40 tons per man-shift. The most critical problems would he roof control and blasthole drilling. The successful operation of large open pits and concentrating plants for treatment of magnetic taconites indicates that the basic techniques and economic problems of pellet production have been solved. The open pit reserves are large, but they are not necessarily available in sufficient quantity or quality to provide an adequate raw materials base for all potential producers. Furthermore, as the more easily available open pit crudes are used up, the pits will become deeper, stripping costs per ton of concentrate will increase, and recoveries will decrease as leaner crudes are utilized. The time will come when supplementary and replacement reserves of magnetic taconite will be required. One way these can be obtained is by underground mining of the down-dip extension of the Mesabi magnetic taconites, especially those layers averaging well over 25% recoverable iron. A key point in such a proposal is the possibility of realizing substantial savings by beneficiating an ore of 30% magnetic iron at 2.5 to 1 ratio of concentration. This contrasts with current practice in Mesabi commercial taconite plants, where the ore averages 22 to 25% magnetic Fe, with concentration ratios of about 3.0 when producing 61% Fe pellets. Two factors which favor the eventual development of underground taconite mining are: 1) the desirable physical structure and high grade of taconite pellets in general and 2) the improved engineering techniques in underground mining. FOR the last 15 years lead has been the standard material for anodes in electrolytic zinc production and it has been generally accepted that this lead should be as free as possible from impurities. Laist1 says, "Next in importance to the purity of solution is the purity of the electrodes and tank lining material. The purest lead obtainable should be used for anodes." The same conclusion is expressed by Ingalls2 and by two German investigators who say that experiments have demonstrated that the purer the lead, the greater is its resistance to corrosion during electrolysis.3 Pure lead, however, while the best material hitherto available for anodes, is not entirely free from objection. The plain lead anode gradually disintegrates under electrolysis, so that the life of an anode, say ¼ in. thick, is frequently not more than two years. Part of the lead from the anode finds its way to the cathode, lowering the purity of the deposited zinc and decreasing the hydrogen overvoltage. The rest of the lead that comes from the disintegration of the anode goes into the manganese dioxide which is precipitated in the cells, rendering unsaleable what might otherwise be a valuable by-product. Yet a further disadvantage of plain lead anodes comes from their tendency to bend or buckle during electrolysis, as a result of intercrystalline oxidation. This makes it necessary to use a fairly wide spacing between anode and cathode to avoid short circuits, and thus leads to a higher power consumption than would otherwise be necessary. The power consumption is also affected by the high decomposition voltage at a lead peroxide surface.

6.4-1. Principles of Operation. The jet-piercing process is a patented thermal process which depends upon a characteristic of the rock which is termed spallability. In its simplest terms, spalling is considered as decrepitation resulting from differential expansion of rock crystals due to thermally induced stresses. The number of individual properties influencing the spalling characteristics of rock are so numerous and their interaction so complex that the only truly reliable way to ascertain the spallability of rocks under thermal shock conditions is to expose them to these conditions. However, laboratory and field work have determined the principal thermal, physical, and mechanical properties of rock which affect spallability (10, 18). The approximate relationship between spallability and these characteristics is as follows: [ ] where To is the critical temperature at which, it is believed, a rock becomes elastic or sufficiently plastic to prevent further spalling action. Thermal diffusivity takes into account the amount of heat used in saturating the medium itself during the migration of a heat front. The rate and degree of dimensional changes which influence the spalling tendency of the rock will depend upon the characteristic of the heat gradient in the rock. The greater the spalling tendency, the higher the piercing rate. Those properties most favorable to a high degree of spallability are: 1. Large linear thermal expansion at temperatures below 700°C. 2. High thermal diffusivity at temperatures below 400°C. 3. Equigranular interlocking structure with little or no fine-grained clay or mica alteration products. 4. No significant amounts of soft, low-melting, or elastic mineral or materials which yield after thermal decomposition.

It is recognized that, in all metallurgical operations, the greatest possible uniformity in all conditions is essential to the best results. It is the constant aim of metallurgists to secure this uniformity, and their success in this respect has been in many cases the cause of great advances in the metallurgical processes themselves. Of all such processes, the production of pig-iron in the modern blast-furnace is perhaps the most complex and the most difficult of control. Notwithstanding the great progress of recent years, there is still great difficulty in obtaining anything like uniform conditions and results in the manufacture of pig-iron. The reason is not far to seek. The ores vary in composition and physical properties, often carrying a varying amount of gangue material, unevenly distributed. The coke may vary in composition, cell-structure, moisture, hardness, and other properties. The blast, the weight of which far exceeds that of any other constituent, varies in its moisture-content and consequently in its chemical composition; and its temperature, by reason of the method of heating, is not uniform, but, besides varying from time to time with atmospheric and other outside conditions, has a maximum and minimum for every changing of stoves. Now, with regard to these variations, the modern demand for uniformity has been greatly aided. Chemical analysis has made it possible to select ores so that the composition of the charge can be kept fairly constant; coal may be obtained from a given field, and coked in the same kind of ovens under conditions which make the fuel practically uniform; the Gayley

I. INTRODUCTION THE word recovery as used in this paper is applied in its broader sense and not limited to wells producing from horizons of unconsolidated sands. Certain problems connected with the winning of petroleum from such horizons present themselves while drilling is in progress and should be considered before drilling is commenced wherever unconsolidated sands are expected. Maximum recovery depends not alone upon efficient pumping methods but also upon the selection of a proper drilling system and the completion of a well especially adapted to the extraction of these oil-bearing sands. II. DRILLING DETERMINING FACTORS IN SELECTION OF METHOD The selection of a drilling method for the development of a region in which the oil reservoir consists of unconsolidated sands is based on the following considerations: (1) Character of the formations overlying the reservoir; (2) thickness of the oil-bearing stratum or strata; (3) thickness and character of water or gas sands; (4) gas pressure to be encountered or expected; (5) total depth of well.

The stored energy of cold work was investigated in drawn gold-silver wires by tin-solution calorimetry as a function of strain, strain rate, initial grain size, and temperature of defornation. The energy expended in the deformation process was measured. Hardness was also measured and was correlated with the stored energy as a function of strain and strain rate. Mechanisms of energy storage are discussed. THE variables which determine the amount of energy stored in a metal during cold work are of two kinds: those involving the metal and its condition and those involving the process of deformation. For example, the stored energy differs between one metal and another and between different degrees of purity of a single metal. It also depends on the nature of the deformation process and particularly the extent, rate, and temperature of deformation. Most investigators have reported the stored energy as a function of strain (or some similar geometric parameter) or of the energy expended during deformation. In general the stored energy increases with strain, rapidly at first, but more slowly at large strains until a saturation level is reached. Information about the effects of other variables, however, is limited. Some data are available on the dependence of the stored energy on the purity of a metal1 and on the composition of

A concept gaining attention among rock mechanics researchers in studies of soil-structure inter- action is the use of compressible packing between the structure such as tunnel lining and the soil or rock. Lester H. Gabriel, provided information about work on this concept at the II Symposium on Rapid Excavation, October 16-17, 1969, Sacramento State College, Sacramento, Calif. It is well-known that loads transmit their effects to those locations which deform least. Traditionally, the question to be answered by the structural engineer is how rigid the structure ought to be. The stronger the structure, the more resistant it becomes to deformation. If it is more rigid than the surrounding strata, the structure acts as a pillar, focusing load on itself. However, if the structure is less rigid than the surrounding strata, blocking or packing between the structure and the enclosing material facilitates the formation of soil or rock arch. The object then is to design and build structures such as tunnel linings, which harness the advantages of carefully planned small movements. Tests on plaster cylinders imbedded in granular sand and loaded were compared to those of plaster cylinders protected in sheathing of polyfoam rubber. The compressible sheath permitted support of up to ten times greater loads Gabriel, Lester H., "Principles of Soil-Structure Interaction Applied to Tunnel Linings." Hecla Mining Co. has successfully used shotcrete with substantial cost savings for ground support purpose. To date, the use of shotcrete in Hecla's operations has been limited to openings where long-term high quality support was required, in exceptionally difficult ground, and to a limited degree in stope support. Experience with both the wet and dry process indicated that the latter was better for their applications. The availability of effective accelerators which reduce losses from rebound, give high-early strength and permit placement in wet conditions, led to this conclusion. The gross cost under such conditions as those at Hecla, including rebound losses and overshooting, is estimated by Hecla to be $51 per cu yd.

ORDERING'S effect on the creep strength and other plastic properties of metals is unknown at the present time. Sachs and Weerts' attempted to compare the mechanical properties of the ordered and disordered state by comparing a quenched specimen with one annealed for a long time at a low temperature. This experiment is unsatisfactory because it introduces a possible effect from quenching. Barrett' used a hot impact test, but his method was not sufficiently sensitive to indicate any discontinuity in plastic behavior in the neighborhood of the critical temperature. On the theoretical side, Fisher9 as suggested that short range order would strengthen an alloy, but he gives no conclusions as to the effect of long range order. Cottrell" has discussed the interaction between long range order and dislocations, but does not indicate whether slip in a completely ordered alloy without domain boundaries is appreciably more difficult than slip in the disordered state. Because order exists in so many alloy systems, it is most important to prove experimentally whether long range order weakens or strengthens a metal. INTRODUCTION. IN presenting this paper I will attempt to answer certain questions proposed at this meeting and describe and illustrate methods of producing sound steel in an economical and hence commercial manner, which are adaptable to the production of practically all steel manufacturers, by readily effected rational changes in the methods of casting, cooling, and subsequent handling of the ingots. In some of the high-grade mills of America, where it is essential to obtain perfectly sound billets or blooms, it is the practice to discard from 35 to 40 per cent. of the crop- or pipe-end, and even with this excessive discard, secondary pipe or shrinkage-cavities are frequently discovered during subsequent working of the blooms and billets into their various manufactured products. The usual discard of from 10 to 20 per cent. from the crop-end of the ingot, which is made by the present generally employed methods of form and solidifying of the castings, certainly does not give the slightest assurance of the saleable product being physically sound or chemically homogeneous. I am aware that in the past there has been and at the present time there still is a decided difference of expert opinion as to what constitutes physically sound steel.

At the Atlanta meeting of the Institute in October,' 1895, some brief remarks were made by Mr. Wilkens on the above subject. It is the object of this paper to set forth the substance of these previous statements, embodying therewith additional information gained since that time, and a brief illustrated description of the method and means of the separation.* Lack of time will unfortunately not allow as complete a resume of the subject in all its phases, especially those relating to the scientific side of the question, as its novelty and importance would warrant, so that even this paper must be considered a preliminary one. It is hoped that at some future meeting of the Institute we may find an opportunity of presenting supplementary data of interest. The paradoxical title above used requires some explanation. The term " non-magnetic material " is applied to such substances as have heretofore been considered non-magnetic in the arts, more especially in the practice of ore-concentration. Scientifically, it has been shown by Faraday, Plucker, Wiedemann and other physicists that magnetism is an inherent property common to all substances, solid, liquid and gaseous, i.e., all suhstances are either attracted or repelled by the poles of a magnet, although ill the great majority of cases the manifestation of this

THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE SCALE IN OPTICAL PYROMETRY AT the basis of optical pyrometry lie the theoretical and experimental data of the so-called blackbody. The black body is essentially a theoretical conception, with certain simple properties attributed to it -fundamentally, the property that its radiation at any temperature is a unique function of the temperature and does not involve any other variables. As a theoretical conception, an equation has been developed by Boltzmann connecting the total radiant power with the temperature, and another equation by Planck connecting the distribution of radiant power throughout the spectrum with the temperature. The integral of the latter with respect to wave-length conduces to the former and permits the evaluation of the constant c1 of the Planck equation, ass given in the form. J-= cl?-5 c2 (1) e ? T ? 1 assuming that the constant Q of the Stefan-Boltzmann law E=a(T4-T40) is known. The other constant c2 is arrived at by other methods, which will be discussed later. This equation for the black body lies at the foundation of optical pyrometry. To make the discussion complete, it should be stated that the theoretical black body is quite closely realized by a hollow enclosure with walls at a uniform temperature and radiating through a small orifice. The electrically heated black body, first introduced by Lummer and Kurlbaum, is an essential part of the equipment of a pyrometric research or testing laboratory. Numerous investigations have shown that its radiation conforms to that of the theoretical black body within experimental errors. Hence by operating the electrically heated black body at the melting point of some pure metal for which the temperature of melting has been determined on the vas scale. a standard is obtained for comparison with
