Several methods are now being used by the industry for determining the gas-oil flow characteristics of reservoir rock samples. Most of the laboratory experirnerltal rlzethods can be classified either as steady-state, unsteady-state, or Hassler-type tests. Although the validity of the results obtained by any specific method is not questiorzed, in general, the complexity of these methods leaves much to be desired. This investigation dealt primarily with the development of a simplified unsteady-state (gas drive) laboratory test method for measuring kg/ko re1ationships of small core samples. A procedure for selecting uniform and representative sandstone rock samples was developetl since it was observed that the reliability of the test resu1ts was dependent upon having a sample which was uniform in porosity and permeability. The importance of factors known to influence the results of this type test, such as oil viscosity, gas expansion, and pressure differential were eva/uated. The method of calculating the test results was found to give valid data over a wide range of gas expansion. The limits of pressure differential and oil viscosity which would insure reliable results were defined. In cornparisorz with other presently used testing methods, the gar drive method requires considerably less apparatus, is less time consuming, and is more readily adaptable to a routine type core test. INTRODUCTION The detcrmination of the gas-oil flow characteristics of reservoir rocks has been given concentrated study by the oil industry for the past decade. Both analytical and experimental methods have been considered. The analytical methods have generally relied on a simplified characterization of porous materials in order that the fundamental laws of fluid flow and capillarity could be utilized. More direct experimental methods have been proposed by numerous production research laboratories with the primary goal being a simple and inexpensive, yet reliable method for measuring the gas-oil flow characteristics of reservoir rock samples. The experimental methods which have been reported in the literature generally can be grouped into one of the following classifications: 1. Steady state1,2,3,4 in which a fixed ratio of flowing fluids is forced through the test sample until equilibrium conditions of saturation and pressure gradient are established. 2. Hassler or stationary liquid method5,6,7 in which a uniform liquid saturation is attained, usually through capillary desaturation, then gas or oil is flowed through the sample at a pressure drop insufficient to disturb the pre-established saturation. :. Non-steady state method1,8,9,10 In which only the gas phase is injected into the sample, causing displacement of the oil phase and resulting in a system of continually changing average saturation and saturation gradient. The steady-state and Hassler methods have been most popular because, no doubt, of the simplicity of the actual relative permeability calculations. The problems involved in these methods were limited to apparatus design and measurement techniques. In the steady-state method, for instance, a constant flowing fluid ratio is established which, at equilibrium, results in an essentially uniform saturation over the entire length of the test sample. Therefore, the basic flow characteristics could be obtained by correlating the average saturation of the test sample with the kg/ko determined at various flowing gas-oil ratios.

A blotter-type electrolytic model was utilized to prepare flow diagrams for a field test of the in-situ combustion process. It is pointed out that the areal sweep of a combustion pattern is similar to sweep patterns that would be developed at an infinite mobility ratio, which exists (approximately) across a combustion front because of the complete removal of liquids from the sand behind it. The precision of the blotter method was tested by comparison with results obtained by other techniques and was found to be satisfactory. The blotter-type model will not furnish as much information as more elaborate and expensive potentiometric models, but its speed of operation and ease of construction make it a highly satisfactory tool to determine areal sweep patterns. A tabulation of sweep efficiency and mobility ratio is furnished for various well geometries. INTRODUCTION In connection with the first field experiment with the in-situ combustion method of oil recovery," flow diagrams for the unique well geometry and boundary conditions involved in the subject test were developed. From these diagrams, information concerning the areal sweep and distribution of flow was obtained. A survev of the literature on potentiometric models, utilized to solve two-dimensional flow problems,1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10 indicated that the information desired could be obtained by means of a blotter-type model by making certain modifications in the technique. The following discussion describes the application of the modified blotter-type electrolytic model to the solution of the problem of the flow of gases in an oil reservoir for an engineering appraisal of the progress of the combustion front during the first field experiment. Considerable information has been published on the theoretical aspects of electrical model techniques. One author stated that:' "The models are based on the observation that since the velocity of an ion in an electrolytic system is proportional to the potential gradient, just as the velocity of a fluid particle in a porous medium is proportional to the pressure gradient, the paths of the ions in the electrolytic systems must be similar to those of the fluid particles in a porous medium with the same geometry and equivalent boundary conditions." This suggestion of a real analogy has been established repeatedly by comparisons of analytic derivations with model results. The analogy between the movement of a combustion front and the model results is not as apparent, since the combustion process differs from water flooding and gas cycling in that the velocity of the burning front is different from the velocity of the injected fluid at the front in combustion. Analogy between electric current flow and movement of the burning front exists because the local velocity of the burning front is proportional to the air (mass) velocity at this point (assuming frontal temperatures are at least as high as the ignition temperature of the fuel). Most model studies fall into one of two categories: (1) electron conduction, or (2) ionic conduction models. Examples of these are models which employ as flow media either a thin metal sheet, or a porous blotter saturated with an electrolyte, respectively. Of the two, the porous blotter model, an ionic conduction model, appears to be the most adaptable to the flow problem that results when using in-situ combustion. This problem requires that the mobility of the particles in the model be controlled analogous to the mobility of gas flowing through burned sand of high permeability to gas and then through oil sand of lower permeability to gas. Phosphorus nitride has been used as a diffusant for introducing phosphorus into silicon under various conditions. It has a temperature -dependent rate of decomposition beginning in the 500°C range, increasing very rapidly above 1000 C, producing gas -eous phosphorus and nitrogen. Best control was obtained with a two-temperature arrangement, with silicon at the proper higher diffusion temperature. It is an easier compound to use than the usual P2O5 because it is nonhygroscopic and yields temperature-controlled surface concentrations together with excellent final surfaces. Surface doping nearly as high as that produced by phosphorus pentoxide has been observed for sources at 850" to 900°C. Reproducible high sheet resistances were obtained by using slow flow rates (1 linear in. per min) and staggered-baffle gas mixing with the nitride at 550°C. Both inert gas (argon, nitrogen) and oxidizing ambients have been examined. Oxygen reacts to produce anhydrous P2O5, consuming the source at a rapid rate. Nitrogen, except for short diffusion times, suppressed the dissociation reaction and sometimes produced inferior surfaces. Argon appears to be a more useful ambient. PHOSPHORUS is a common impurity atom which may be introduced into a semiconductor lattice to create a p-n junction or an nn contact region. Various investigators1-4 have described techniques which can be used with either elemental phosphorus or certain of its compounds. This paper discusses a newly available compound of phosphorus, phos- some processes silicon wafers are precoated with a phosphate glass which acts as the doping source. Although a nonoxidizing form like elemental phosphorus or a phosphine can be used, most diffusion methods usually involve the use of phosphorus pentoxide. Because of the rapid volatility of this compound, a two-step process is often used, combining a gaseous deposition to introduce a predetermined quantity of phosphorus into the silicon with a later redistribution to obtain the desired distribution and surface concentration. Such a process usually involves predepositing phosphorus at surface concentrations greater than 1020 cm-'. At such doping levels the phosphorus-diffusion coefficient appears to be strongly concentration-dependent.596 Distribution profiles5'9 for these high concentrations of phosphorus do not follow Fick's laws, having extended subsurface regions which appear electrically to be nearly uniformly doped with ionized impurity atoms. Radioactive-tracer experiments also show near-surface anomalies in the distribution profile. Additionally, it has been shown1' that the introduction of very high surface concentrations of impurity atoms into silicon (a step necessitated by the subsequent lowering of concentration during the redistribution) creates dislocations, even in material having no dislocations originally. For device fabrication the use of oxide masking introduces certain difficulties and limitations.7'8 The standard practice of using phosphorus pentoxide as an impurity source adds other problems to these because of the speed and ease with which this compound reacts with moisture present in any gas in contact with it. In fact, P2O5 is one of the fastest and most effective drying agents for gases. Because it is such an excellent desiccant, completely anhydrous phosphorus pentoxide is difficult to obtain and is even more difficult to keep dry. Adequately dry gloved boxes must be used for storage and transfer of the chemical. The presence of even traces of moisture will cause formation of phosphoric acids which, during the high-temperature diffusion, results in polyphosphoric acids of variable composition. A. G. Crocker and M. Bevis (Battersea College of Technology)— Richman and Richman and conard17 have recently published the very interesting results of their studies on the plastic deformation of Fe-Ni-C martensites and of an Fe-5 wt pct Be alloy. Other work on the range of Fe-Be alloys containing between 16 and 27 at. pct Be has also been reported by Richman." One of the fascinating features of this work is that the materials investigated deform primarily by means of twinning and that several twinning modes are operative in addition to the well-established (112 ) mode of bcc materials The composition planes of these unusual twins were determined using a single-surface analysis and reported as (0131, "{045)" or "{089)", and It is now thought1' that the "{0,1,13)" habit reported for the Fe-Ni-C alloys'' is more likely to be near "{127)". Although the full twinning elements of these unusual twinning modes could not be determined directly from the experimental results, the authors attempt to deduce the elements by considering twin intersectionslQ and by using the projection technique of Jaswon and Dove. The basic assumption of their approach is that the (013) habits are truly rational planes but that the other habits are irrational and merely approximated to by the indices quoted above. They thus deduce that the twinning mode describing the (013) habit is either Type I or compound and that the modes describing the other habits are Type 11. This deduction must however be false as all twinning modes in cubic structures obeying the classical orientation relationships of deformation twinning must be compound. Type-I and Type-I1 modes can occur in all of the other crystal systems (indeed in the triclinic system compound modes are not allowed), but in the cubic system only compound modes can arise. This fact, which does not appear to be well-known, fol- lows immediately from the relations between the four twinning elements defining a twinning mode. Thus for a Type-I mode which is uniquely defined by the rational twinning elements K1 = hi and given by: where the summation convention of the tensor calculus has been adopted. For cubic materials the metrics and reduce to the unit tensors and j so that we have It is clear from these equations that both ki and ui must take on integral values; i.e., Kz, and ql must be rational, if hi and vi are integers, i.e., if K1 and are rational. Thus for cubic materials a Type-I mode must degenerate into a compound mode and the same result also arises for Type-II modes. The apparently irrational habits observed by the authors can thus not be explained in terms of Type-I1 twinning if the classical laws of deformation twinning are to be obeyed. An alternative explanation of the irrational habits is that they may arise from twinning modes with four irrational twinning elements. These modes, which do not obey the classical orientation relationships associated with deformation twinning, have been shown to arise as the result of double twinning processes in magnesium,22 but may also describe a simple shear on an irrational plane in an irrational direction. DURING the smelting of the sulfide ores of copper, nickel, and certain other metals, a matte phase is formed. For a better understanding of the physico-chemical properties of mattes, binary systems such as Cu-S, Ni-S, Fe-S, and so forth, should be studied, especially in the vicinity of liquid compounds such as Cu2S, Ni3S2, FeS, and so forth. These compounds are relatively stable in the solid state although they can exhibit appreciable deviations from stoichiometry. With small deviations from stoichiometry there are large changes in the activity of both sulfur and metal this is a characteristic of both solid and liquid sul-fides near the stoichiometric compositions. In the vicinityof molten Cu2S,1 for instance, the activity of sulfur increases about 100 times for a 0.012 increase in the mole fraction of sulfur and, correspondingly, the activity of copper decreases greatly. In this sens the minor deviations from stoichiometry should be carefully taken into account in studies of such metal-sulfur melts. Metal-sulfur melts may be considered to have properties intermediate between metallic solutions and molten salts, i.e., neither entirely metallic nor entirely ionic. The radius of the ion sZ- is 1.84 as compared with 1.04? for a single bond covalent s.2 It is therefore inferred that when the sulfur is more ionic its partial molar volume is larger, although metal-metal, metal-sulfur, and sulfur-sulfur interactions may bring about further complexities. Thus, it is to be expected that the molar volumes, which are derived from density-composition relations, will help in resolving the structure of the melts. In this study the maximum bubble pressure method with bubbling gases of H2, H2S, and Ar, .was employed to measure the density. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Silver of 99.95 pct purity was melted in an alumina crucible and hydrogen gas was then bubbled through the liquid for the deoxidation. In preparation of Cu2S, electrolytic copper powder (>99.9 pct Cu) was mixed with precipitated sulfur and heated to 1200°C in an alumina crucible under a hydrogen atmosphere. Mixtures having the approximate compositions FeS and Ni3S2 were prepared by heating reagent grade electrolytic iron or reduced nickel powder with precipitated sulfur under a hydrogen atmosphere. The H2S gas was of 98.5 pct purity, the impurities being mostly CO2 and CS2 which hardly contaminate the melts. Apparatus. The crucible system is shown schematically in Fig. 1. To minimize the variation of melt composition during a density measurement, the apparatus was designed in such a way that either Ar, H2, H2S, or mixtures of these gases could be used as the bubbling gas. When the melt had a high partial pressure of sulfur, H2S gas was used. When the partial pressure of sulfur was so low that oxygen might dissolve in the melt, the use of H2 was preferred. In intermediate cases, argon or mixtures of H2-H2S were used. Density of Dibutylphtalate. Dibutylphtalate was used as the manometer fluid. Relative to distilled water, the density of the dibutylphtalate, pdib g per cc, was measured and found to be: pdib (25°C) = 1.046 i 0.002. Tapadaa is one of several centers of porphyry copper mineralization in northern Sulawesi. Host rocks are mainly varieties of quartz diorite porphyry. Structural control of mineralization is indicated by elongation of the sulfide system (5 x 1 km) parallel to prominent NW-trending structures, but in detail mineralization is strongly influenced by relative age and lithology. Hydrothermal alteration is characterized by widespread occurrence of advanced argillic assemblages and the presence of sodic rather than potassic alkali feldspar. Propylitic alteration surrounds the mineralized area. Phyllic and advanced argillic alteration occur in structurally controlled zones and in limited pervasive areas. Hypogene copper mineralization develops in rocks with sericite-albite alteration and comprises low total sulfide chalcopyrite-bornite or chalcopyrite-pyrite.

On the basis of liquidus measurements in the system COO-Mg0-Al2O3-Sio, and previously published data, diagrams have been constructed at 5 pct Al2O3, intervals from 5 to 35 pct Al2O3,. Liquidus temperatures and primary phase fields are shown. The optimum composition of a blast furnace slag for a given alumina content is indicated. At the optimum point, ordinary slags will be entirely liquid and will have maximum desulphurization potential and minimum viscosity. The relation of optimum composition of slags to the "plateau region" of the liquidus surface, and the application of these data on synthetic quaternary slags to actual slag compositions are discussed. Index of refraction of glasses is given as well as composition, temperature, and phase data for each mixture. THE usual blast furnace slag, as a first approximation, can be considered a mixture of the four oxides, CaO, MgO, Also,, and SiO,. Systematic, extensive data for the quaternary system, CaO-MgO-A1,0,-SiO, is therefore required for the understanding of the properties of such a slag as a function of composition and temperature. With sufficient data, it should be possible to fix unequivocably the relative amounts of lime, magnesia, and silica required for a given alumina content to result in a slag composition having optimum properties. Other constituents, such as FeO, MnO, Ti02, and S, have an effect on the properties of a slag, but as long as they are present in small and approximately constant amounts they produce only a second-order effect superimposed upon the major changes in properties of slags determined by the relative amounts of the four major components. Viscosity and desulphurization data have been reported for mixtures approaching blast furnace slags in composition, but systematic liquidus data have not been obtained. Inasmuch as a slag must be all liquid in order to be most effective as well as practicable, clearly the temperature above which a mixture is all liquid (liquidus temperature) is a type of data needed. Such data have been obtained through the study of 446 compositions and are pre- sented in this paper along with a discussion of their bearing on the optimum composition of blast furnace slags. For an orderly presentation of the data, the quaternary system is viewed as a tetrahedron with one component at each apex. Fig. 1 shows a tetrahedron representing the system Ca0-Mg0-A1,0,-Si0,. Most roof bolts are used in mines with bedded roofs, but it has not been determined to what degree thin-bedded roofs can be reinforced by bolting if there is no thick member in which to anchor the bolts, or what function the bolts must perform in such a case. Owing to widespread practice of systematic bolting to support thin-bedded roofs, moreover, it is desirable to design roof-bolting systems on a quantitative basis. Specifically, a solution to the following problem is required: For a roof composed of beds of given thickness and physical properties, what is the optimum length, spacing, orientation, and tightness of bolts consistent with safety and economy? The investigation reviewed here has produced a functional equation to evaluate these variables and establish basic principles of roof bolting.

HUDSON MAXIM, Brooklyn, N. Y.-Immediately after the creation of the Naval Consulting Board, Admiral Strauss, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance of the Navy, told members of the Board that the most important problem for the scientists to solve was erosion in large guns. The Navy, for years, had been working on the problem with marked suceess, but there was much yet remaining to be accomplished. As Chairman of the Committee on Ordnance and Explosives of the Naval Consulting Board, I communicated with several experts in the manufacture of steel, principal among whom was Prof. Howe. He generously agreed to help in every way possible, and the work that he has done and the time that he has spent upon it can he appreciated only by reading his paper. Prof. Howe asked for some rings. from a, certain 14-in. gun which Admiral Strauss had mentioned in particular, and in which, he had informed us, at each shot the bore of the gun, was enlarged about 0.001 in.,' and that after a relatively small number of rounds it was considerably eroded. It has puzzled scientists for a long time to account for the peculiar erosive effect produced by the powder gases in a gun, arid: what Prof. Howe has done in his paper is worthy of Sherlock Holmes. He is a veritable Sherlock Holmes of science.

Principles of fluid motion and turbulence which have been found to be of use in mixing and agitation problems are discussed, as well as suggested applications in extractive-metallurgy processes. Various types of impellers are described, together with other conditions that affect flow pattern and turbulence. The choice of equipment for particular requirements is considered, and equations for power input are given. Modern heavy-duty mixing and agitation equipment can take an increasingly important part in such extractive-metallurgy processes as solids handling, crystallizing and leaching, chemical operations, and flotation. Application of mixing and fluid-mechanics principles to extraction methods can lead to greater process rates and a resultant saving in time and money. MIXERS are being applied with increasing frequency to problems in the metallurgical industries. The increase represents in part the modernization of mechanical equipment used through the application of unitized drives, modern electric motors and speed reducers, and recently developed materials of construction. Some applications have resulted from process changes and the use of techniques for operations similar to those that have been demonstrated and proven in the chemical industry. Still more applications are being developed through the use of fluid-dynamics principles not previously recognized as applicable to these operations. It is the purpose of this paper to describe those principles of fluid motion and turbulence which have been found to be of use in mixing and agitation problems, and to suggest applications for them in the extractive-metallurgy processes. Modern mixing equipment has been designed to provide the fluid motion consistent with that best suited to different operations.' When properly applied, these more efficient fluid-handling mixers result in lower process-production costs. Metallurgical operations usually involve large amounts of solids. The characteristics of the ore control the process and only enough liquid is added to provide sufficient fluidity for handling and processing. The reactive part of the ore, the mineral value to be extracted, is likely to be low in percentage, and the quantity of reagent required is similarly low, but excessive dilution makes additional reagent necessary and therefore is undesirable. Thus, the primary problems in minerals processing are to handle as high a concentration of solids as possible and to distribute reagents uniformly. These pulps, or slurries, are in a range of solids concentration where hindered settling rates apply, and care must be taken to agitate and mix sufficiently to maintain suspension and flow throughout the equipment. Such slurries have high densities which are the weighted average of the components and viscosities that are spoken of as "effective viscosities" but are difficult to evaluate. It is convenient to separate metallurgical operations involving mixers and agitators into three categories: solids handling, mechanical or physical operations, and chemical operations. In each of these categories fluid motion is required to maintain suspension, to distribute surface-active agents, to blend components and reactants, and to induce high rates of chemical reaction. After a discussion of some basic principles of mixing and agitation, examples of application to the three categories will follow. The first paper which appears in the published Transactions of our Institute is that read by our respected Secretary at its first meeting in Wilkes-Barre in May, 1871. It is entitled " The Geographical Distribution of Mining Districts in the United States," and presents a brief but masterly review of what was known of the distribution of our deposits of useful minerals, particularly the metals, not only from a geographical but from a geological stand-point. At the request of Dr. Raymond I agreed, somewhat hastily, perhaps, to write for this occasion a brief sketch of the geological distribution of the deposits of the useful metals in this country, in the light of the increased knowledge of the present day. THE Alabama Power Co. operates its Gorgas mine in Walker County, Ala., immediately adjacent to its steam plant. The coal mine property consists of some 19,000 acres of fee and mineral ownership lands, and all of the production from the mine-approximately 2500 tons per day-is utilized at the company's adjoining steam plant. The company is presently considering the purchase of additional acreage adjoining its present holdings which acquisition will almost double its reserves. The coal is transported from the mine over a short railroad spur in the company's own equipment, either directly to one of the large plants at Gorgas or to a storage pile. The longest haul is about 1 1/4 miles.

The Alabama flake-graphite industry has flourished only in times of war when importations of foreign graphite for crucible use have been greatly curtailed or cut off. World War I was a boom period and in 1918 some 30 plants produced 7,795,475 Ib. of flake graphite. The industry languished following the war and no graphite was produced from 1929 to 1939. The Federal Bureau of Mines began investigating the Alabama graphite deposits in 1940 and worked out modern recovery methods that were applied to production during part of World War 11. A prospecting program disclosed reserves of over 25 million tons of graphtic schists. In 1942 the War Production Board authorized the enlargement of the only plant then producing flake graphite and the construction of two new plants. Production of flake graphite from these three plants in 1943 is estimated at 8,100,000 lb. Increased imports from Madagascar late in 1943 shut down one of the new plants and curtailed production at the other. Alabama flake graphite has not yet been able to compete with Madagascar graphite for use in the manufacture of any but small graphite crucibles. The future of the industry must depend on meeting the higher carbon content demanded for other uses. Introduction The flake-graphite deposits of Alabama are confined to a narrow belt extending for about 60 miles southwest from the northeast corner of Clay County across Coosa County to the edge of the Coastal Plain in Chilton County (Fig. I). The continuity of the beds is broken by a 10-mile gap between Millerville in Clay County and Goodwater in Coosa County. The Clay County beds extend about 27 miles northwest of this gap, with a width of 3 to 4 miles near Millerville and of less than a mile at the northeast end. The Coosa-Chilton are? is about 33 miles long with a fairly consistent width of 2 to 3 miles. Geologically the graphite belt lies near the northeast boundary of the outcrop of metamorphic rocks of the Ashland series, a complex group of intensely folded and faulted beds of pre-Cambrian age composed mostly of quartz-mica schist, in which the mica is predominantly muscovite; garnet-mica schist, in which biotite is more common; and hornblende schist. Flake graphite is found in commercial quantities only in the quartz-mica schist. The best graphite, both in quantity and quality, is found in schist cut by numerous small pegmatite stringers along the planes of the schistosity. The pegmatites themselves contain little graphite, but the adjacent country rock is normally rich. . The schist was derived through the recrystallization of shale during the intrusion of the pegmatites, the graphite being derived from amorphous carbon in the shale. The intrusion of the pegmatites, and therefore the size and quantity .of the graphite flakes, seems to have a structural control.

The Alabama flake-graphite industry has flourished only in times of war when importations of foreign graphite for crucible use have been greatly curtailed or cut off. World War I was a boom period and in 1918 some 30 plants produced 7,795,475 Ib. of flake graphite. The industry languished following the war and no graphite was produced from 1929 to 1939. The Federal Bureau of Mines began investigating the Alabama graphite deposits in 1940 and worked out modern recovery methods that were applied to production during part of World War 11. A prospecting program disclosed reserves of over 25 million tons of graphtic schists. In 1942 the War Production Board authorized the enlargement of the only plant then producing flake graphite and the construction of two new plants. Production of flake graphite from these three plants in 1943 is estimated at 8,100,000 lb. Increased imports from Madagascar late in 1943 shut down one of the new plants and curtailed production at the other. Alabama flake graphite has not yet been able to compete with Madagascar graphite for use in the manufacture of any but small graphite crucibles. The future of the industry must depend on meeting the higher carbon content demanded for other uses. Introduction The flake-graphite deposits of Alabama are confined to a narrow belt extending for about 60 miles southwest from the northeast corner of Clay County across Coosa County to the edge of the Coastal Plain in Chilton County (Fig. I). The continuity of the beds is broken by a 10-mile gap between Millerville in Clay County and Goodwater in Coosa County. The Clay County beds extend about 27 miles northwest of this gap, with a width of 3 to 4 miles near Millerville and of less than a mile at the northeast end. The Coosa-Chilton are? is about 33 miles long with a fairly consistent width of 2 to 3 miles. Recently R. J. Charles1 showed that comminution of brittle or semi-brittle materials in batch operations is described more appropriately by a variable energy relationship than by the specific relation- ships proposed by Rittinger,2 Kick,3 and Bond.4 That is, the value of n in the empirical differential operation which applies to crushing and grinding (Eq. 1) is variable. Independently, Holmes6 developed an identical generalized equaton for size reduction. The experimental data of Charles and Holmes show that the value of n is determined by the material and the comminuting machine and is constant for a given combination of these two conditions. The general objective of the present article is to extend the Charles-Holmes concepts to continuous ball milling. The specific objective is to analyze the operation of a vibratory ball mill dry-grinding chromite in a continuous open circuit and to develop an equation for the comminution of chromite in this mill.

US 4,181,588 - Direct extraction of lead from lead sulflde ore. Ore is leached with a solution of ferric chloride and sodium chloride. The leach liquor is filtered to remove sulfur and gangue, then cooled in a crystallizer to precipitate lead chloride The slurry from the crystallizer is subjected to electrolysis to deposit lead chloride on the cathode plate. Dr. Dean should be congratulated on the preparation of such an erudite and scholarly dissertation on bauxite and on the work which the Bureau of Mines has been doing in connection with the development of processes to use low-grade domestic materials.

Placer gold-bearing gravels of interior Alaska and the Yukon are, for the most part, permanently frozen, and are described as permafrost. The first step in preparing these gravels for dredging is to strip by bulldozer the surface layer of tundra, brush, and scrub timber, and to expose the ebony colored surface of the frozen mud at the grass roots. This mud varies from a frozen, muddy ooze to a sandy silt and locally may contain layers of peat. The whole mass is intercalated with ice dikes and lenses. The thickness will vary from a few feet up to 100 ft, depending upon local conditions. A freshly exposed surface will thaw to a depth of 4 in. per day during the summer season. Common practice is to expose a large surface of this mud to the sun and each day's thaw is then swept off by water and carried away in suspension.
