The state of California produced 310,-996,696 bbl. of oil and about 415,832,000 M cu. ft. of gas in 1944. Nine new fields or new zone discoveries were made during the year, which, according to best estimates, will contribute some 77,000,000 bbl. of new reserves; in addition, the extensions of old fields will increase the new reserves about 165,000,000 bbl., or a combined total, through dis- coveries of new fields, zones, and extensions, of 242,000,000 bbl., offsetting to the extent of about 78 per cent the total oil produced during the year. Geographically, the reserves from these new field and zone discoveries and extensions are distributed as follows: Per Cent San Joaquin Valley........ 72 Coast Area............... 24 Los Angeles Basin Fields. . . 4 100 The state's reserves of crude oil at the end of the year have been estimated to be distributed as follows: The outstanding development project for the year was that of the United States Navy in the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. I, Elk Hills field. During the year, 115 wells were completed in this field, and at the close of the year an average of 19 strings of tools were drilling. This program is being jointly conducted by the Standard Oil Co. of California with the Navy and is designed to increase the production of Naval Petroleum Reserves from approxi-

IN the practice of ore finding the geologist is continually confronted with the question of oreshoot extension, so that the general problem seems worthy of systematic investigation. This problem appears when the reserves are estimated and when the advisability of deepening the shaft comes up. Moreover, there is need for lower development cost to keep pace with cost reductions in other departments, or even to offset a rising cost of ore finding or ore following. This can be gained by close geologic control of the development; and much of the geology involved is that bearing on the downward, upward, and horizontal extensions of shoots. Furthermore, the purchase of a mine or prospect often depends directly on the question of shoot extension; because it is seldom that the ore is fully developed and the purchase price is almost invariably based largely on "possible" and geologically prospective ore. Most current methods for estimating "possible" and the more nebulous classes of ore are crude and indecisive. In the following pages the extension of oreshoots is the major theme, although the more basic subject, the general art of ore finding, is given some space.

The physical composition of coal and the distribution of its physical constituents will partially determine the efficiency of the process chosen for coal preparation. Distribution and concentration of coal macerals will, to a degree, be controlled by preparation processes. A number of preparation processes have been evaluated to determine this interrelation. These evaluations will help provide information needed for the production of coal that meets definite petrographic composition specifications. etrographic composition and degree of coalifica-tion of coal can determine the choice of cleaning processes and equipment used in coal preparation. The purpose of this paper is to present data on studies of the preparation processes of breakage, sizing, cleaning, and blending and to show the effect coal's petrographic composition has on these processes. Herrin (No. 6) and Danville (No. 7) Coals from Illinois were used in these tests. Nomenclature used herein is that approved in the Glossary of the International Committee for Coal Petrology,' based primarily on the Stopes-Heerlen system of classification2 and used in coal petrography laboratories throughout the world. BREAKAGE TESTS Breakage tests of Illinois coals related to petrographic composition have been conducted at various times at the Illinois State Geological Survey. These tests have been classified under two headings -impact tests and compression tests. Impact tests, as the name implies, consisted of breaking the coal by a sharp, sudden force. Impact tests were further divided into fall tests and block tests. Compression tests consisted of applying a constant pressure on a piece of coal until the coal fractured.

This paper shows that volume stability, low porosity and decreased pyroplasticity are desirable for blast-furnace linings, partitularly for the hearth. It shows further that a hot load test is a valuable means of testing the fusion or softening behavior of a refractory at operating temperatures. The effect of carbon monoxide on commercia1 blast-furnace refractories in their as-received condition and after refiring is reported, showing that many commercial blast-furnace refractories disintegrate badly but that refiring decreases the effect and certain special refractories are now available which are almost free of the tendency. Factors Affecting Choice of ._ Refractories If one were to depend entirely upon experience or trial in the selection of clay refractories, the solution of a problem would be a slow process. Furnace campaigns are so long and attended by so many variables that it is difficult to draw fine distinctions within a reasonable period of time in regard to the quality of refractories used. It could be said, of course, that if service results do not yield the proper information for intelligent choice, there is no difference in the quality of brick being considered, but this is not necessarily true. Conventional ceramic tests are designed to give the ceramic engineer information as to the refractoriness and firing tempera- . ture, which he in turn internrets in terms of volume stability, ability to withstand load at high temperature (pyroplasticity), permeability, chemical stability and re-. sistance to the action of slag. In most refractory applications . several of these factors are involved. In a particular instance, one requirement may be predominant, while in others some other factors may be of primary importance. In this country, clay refractories are generally made from mixtures of plastic and flint fire clays. The process of firing a clay refractory is one of slowly melting the constituents, and during this operation its porosity is gradually reduced. The process is arrested, of course, in its incipient Stages and the Progress is determined by measuring slight changes in porosity, volume, bulk gravity, etc., that have taken place. Often the temperatures to which clay refractories are exposed in service are higher than those employed in their firing. However, if the manufacturer were to fire them at such high temperatures the brick would distort. Therefore it would be difficult for the manufacturer to fire all of his clay refractories to temperatures at which they are to be used, although in many cases it would be desirable from the user's point of view if he would do so. The porosity of clay refractories decreases by firing, to a minimum limit, after which a further increase in the temperature causes expansion in certain clay constituents and bloating in others. Both may occur in the same refractory containing two such clays.

INCREASING realization of the importance of dust control, and the recommendations of various agencies, have led the mining industry to become actively concerned with this problem. The background and necessity for adequate dust-suppression measures have been discussed in a number of publications, including those of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the use of spray water to reduce dust at the face and on roadways has been recommended. The problem resolves itself into obtaining adequate dust reduction at a reasonable cost. Inasmuch as the term "adequate dust suppression" has never been clearly defined, nor have permissible limits of dustiness (in terms of dust count) been established, it is apparent that any method selected may be required to meet additional demands. Until the industry has been given some indication of permissible limits of dustiness, no permanent solution is possible. Progress will be somewhat handicapped until such information is available. In addition, dust reduction must be obtained without the addition of any excessive moisture to the coal, since consideration must often be given to: I. Quality standards, particularly reduction in heat value. 2. Handling characteristics, particularly in regard to unloading from railroad cars and bins. 3. Application of dry methods of coal cleaning. 4. Necessity for fine screening within specified limits of oversize and undersize. Little detailed information is available as to the advantages and disadvantages of the several methods of water distribution, the location and protection of sprays, operating data on pressure, quantity of water, and so forth, and results obtained. In 1940 an investigation was undertaken to determine and evaluate the principal factors involved. This paper constitutes a progress report on this work and cannot in any way be regarded as complete on any one of the several phases. CLASSIFICATION OF DUST SOURCES The various sources of underground dust may be classified as primary or secondary. A primary source is one associated with appreciable degradation of size, that is, where the greater part of the actual fines capable of becoming air-borne dust are produced. A secondary source may be considered as one in which the greater part of the fines have been produced at some previous operation and are in such condition that they can be dispersed as air-borne dust. These conceptions appear to be of practical significance, as experience indicates that when dust is controlled at the primary sources the importance of secondary sources is minimized. For these reasons, investigations to date have been concerned principally with the primary sources of dust, and this paper is concerned particularly with one of these-namely, undercutting. An elaborate series of experiments has been conducted during the past three years at Irvington, N. J., which has resulted in the perfection of a process for the manufacture of smokeless fuel from high-volatile coals, and for the recovery and refinement of the coal-tar products derived therefrom. These experiments have been financed by Messrs. Blair & Co., of New York, and were conducted under the direction of Charles H. Smith, a member of this Institute, and the inventor of the process. The low-temperature distillation of coal has interested investigators for many years. Sporadic attempts have been made to solve the mechanical problems, but until the Smith process was developed, they were not carried to conclusions of economic value. The present coal shortage and the increasing demand for smokeless fuels make this subject one of timely interest. DescRiption of Plant The following equipment was installed and operated during the experimental period: Four horizontal and two vertical units of commercial size for the low-temperature distillation of the coal; two vertical, two horizontal, and two inclined benches for distillation of the briquets at medium and higher temperatures; presses and auxiliary equipment necessary for making briquets; and a complete byproduct recovery and tar-refining plant. This commercial equipment is provided with gas and electric meters, pyrometers and other apparatus for recording accurately the results of all experiments. There is, in addition to the commercial equipment, a complete chemical laboratory with distillation and recovery apparatus, including facilities far refining and cracking the tar and measuring the yields and calorific value of the gas. This apparatus makes possible a study on a small scale, of the various problems involved in the process. Description of Process Mr. Smith's experiments have resulted in the production on a commercial scale of: 1. A fuel, called Carbocoal, which, for convenience in handling, is prepared in briquet form.

This paper deals with recent geologic studies in the slate belt of Northampton, Lehigh and Berks counties, Pennsylvania. The work was conducted under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic Survey. Three years have now been spent in detailed consideration of the economic geology of this region. In the field, particular attention was paid to the bearing of geology on quarry development and property valuation and the object of this paper is to summarize the results from that viewpoint. Excellent studies of a somewhat similar nature have already been carried out by Bowles,' but with the emphasis upon the details of quarrying and fabricating methods, rather than upon the geologic relations. The Northampton-Lehigh-BeRks District Location The region here discussed lies in east-central Pennsylvania and extends southwestward from Delaware River, on the New Jersey line, to the Schuylkill in north-central Berks County. It is an elongated belt occupying the northern sections of the three counties mentioned and lying along the southern edge of Blue Mountain. Its length is about 50 miles and its average width five or six, though in places it attains a maximum of 10 miles. There are no large cities in the region, but about 10 miles south are Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. Railroads serving the slate belt are the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, and the Pennsylvania along the Delaware River, the Lehigh Valley and Central of New Jersey along the Lehigh, and the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Reading on the Schuylkill. In addition, two railroads—the Philadelphia and Reading and the Lehigh and New England—cut obliquely through the slate region to reach the more isolated communities. Transportation facilities are thus excellent. The slate deposits of these three counties are conspicuously unified, both economically and geologically. In general type of marketable

Stress-strain curves were obtained for single crystals of 70 pct Ag-30 pct Zn tested in tension and shear. Samples tested in tension and shear had comparable resolved shear stresses and stress-strain curves. The {111} <110> slip system was observed. It zoas found that the9.e is a barrier to slip in both latent close -packed directions and that the magnitude of these barriers is proportional to prior strain during easy glide. It was observed that cross-slip in tension and shear was most frequent in crystals with an initial orientation near <100> "Oershoot" zoas observed in tension. The amount of this "overshoot" was independent of initial orientation. AN idealized concept of plastic deformation indicates that a single crystal should yield at some stress that is dependent on crystal perfection and it should then continue to deform plastically by the process of easy glide which is characterized by a linear stress-strain curve and a low coefficient, d/dy, of work hardening. Hexagonal metal crystals generally conform to this ideal concept of laminar flow. In fcc metals the range of easy glide is always restricted in magnitude and it is strongly dependent on orientation, composition, crystal size, shape, surface preparation, and temperature. Since one of the principal differences between the two crystal systems, both of which deform by slip on close packed planes, is the existence of latent slip planes in the fcc crystals, it has been proposed that the transition from easy glide to turbulent flow, characterized by rapid linear hardening, is due to slip on secondary planes intersecting the primary plane.ls Several theories have been proposed to explain the linear hardening and parabolic stages of the stress -strain curve.6"10 The easy-glide region is the least understood of the three stages. The stress-strain characteristics of Cu-Zn, which shows a long easy-glide region, have been extensively investigated."-" In light of recent ideas on dislocations, cross-slip, effect of solute atoms, and stacking fault energy, it was felt that the certain features of this earlier work might be compared with another alloy, Ag-30 pct Zn, which also exhibits a long easy-glide region. Tension and shear stress at room temperatures were employed. The results obtained, together with some interpretation of the observations, are described below. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The silver and zinc used for mixing the alloys were 99.99 pct pure. The two components were weighed to within 0.1 pct of the weights required fo the alloy composition. They were then placed in a closed graphite mold and the mold and contents were heated in 100°C stages from 500&apos; to 900°C with sufficient time and vigorous agitation at each stage provided to dissolve the silver. The crucible was then heated to 1150°C and agitated violently before being quenched in oil. The resulting alloy rod was machined free of sur face defects and then placed in a graphite mold designed for growing single crystals. The graphite mold was closed with a graphite plug and was encased in a pyrex glass tube which was connected to a vacuum system. The tube and mold assembly were placed in a furnace; the tube was evacuated and the furnace was rapidly heated to a temperature sufficient for fusing and sealing the glass. The glass-encased evacuated mold and contents were then lowered through a vertical furnace. The top section of the furnace was held at 100 °C above the melting point of the alloy. The lowering rate was 1.5 in. per hr. The tension specimens were 1/4 in. diam; the shear specimens were 1/2 in. diam. These specimens were then removed from the mold, etched, and chemically polished with hot (60°C) Chase etch reagent (Crz03-4.0 g, NH4C1-7.5 g, NHOs-150 cc, HzS04-52 cc, and Hz0 to make 1 liter). In preparation for tensile testing, the specimens were carefully machined to a diameter of about 0.200 in. to permit a gage length of 6 in., annealed for 16 hr at 800&apos; to reduce coring, and then cleaned and polished. A modified Bausch-type shear apparatus which has been described previously18 were employed. The gage length was 1/8 in. This shear apparatus was placed in an Instron tensile testing machine. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Tension. Several specimens were extended at room temperature to determine the effect of initial orientation on the stress-strain curves of Ag-30 pct Zn. The initial orientation and the resolved shear stress supported by the active slip system at various total strains are plotted in Fig. 1. The critical resolved shear stress, t,, initial rate of work hardening, d/dy, and length of the easy-glide region are independent of orientation. Phosphate ore is being mined at Monsanto Co.&apos;s Henry mine, near Soda Springs, Idaho, for the company&apos;s three furnace elemental phosphorus plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. In stripping and mining, D-9 crawler tractors are utilized to rip and push-load rubber-tired scrapers. The equipment consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 657B scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12- month basis, two shifts per day, whereas mining is mainly in the summer months on a one-shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1 million tons of phosphate rock and 2.5-3 million cu yd of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor which owns, operates and maintains all equipment used. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis.

INTRODUCTION Where and how to spend the exploration dollar to net the greatest economic return, has always been a major problem for mining companies. Minerals are being consumed in ever increasing quantitie: throughout the world and the mining industry is being called on to meet this demand. In view of the present world-wide nationalistic trend, it is becoming more difficult to determine where exploration money can be spent most profitably. An exploration project should be evaluated continually--in the beginning, to define economic targets and later to determine, as early as possible, whether a project has a chance of developing into a venture that will make a profit acceptable to top management. At this point, a decision can be made whether or not to proceed with plans to bring in a new mine. Exploration, evaluation, and development, therefore, must be fully integrated in transforming an exploration project into a profitable mining venture. DEMAND FOR LEAD AND ZINC Lead and zinc are metals basic to our economy and the demand for them will continue to rise as the population in the world increases. If the population continues to grow at the present rate, it will about double by the year 2000. The accelerating demand for these metals is shown by statistics. Nearly half as much lead (48%) and more than half as much zinc (55%) have been mined between the two world wars as in all pre- ceding history. (1)

Published tables of jaw crusher capacities are compiled for the most part from field performance data, interspersed with interpolations, extrapolations, various safety factors, and other modifications. Such a table attempts to balance and equalize field data from widely Werent materials, with differences of crushability, efficiency of feeding, sizing of the feed, and so on. The tests described in this paper were undertaken with the objectives of checking previously reported capacities; of studying the effects of various factors upon the capacity, including jaw plate curvature; and, if possible, of deriving a general capacity equation. Such an equation has been derived from the data obtained in these tests. It is given together with factors for its use. While more accuracy than is usually required may be obtained by careful application of the equation, it is of simple form and provides a convenient reference plane upon which the potential capacity of various crushers may be compared, and with which operating adjustments may be made on existing installations. The principal deviation in these tests from the usual approach consists of a laboratory technique which has been developed for the production of selected capacity data. Recording instruments are connected to crushers in such a manner that a continuous record is produced which discloses the inherent maximum capacity of the crusher and shows capacity decreases caused by hangups. The capacity effects of various crushing conditions are made more evident by this arrangement. The recording instruments were first applied to a standard sized 10 by 7 in. Blake-type jaw crusher in the laboratory. Suficient tests were run on this with various combinations of setting, throw, speed, feed sizing, shapes of jaw plates, and other operating features, to establish the individual effect of each on the capacity. The instruments later were applied to much larger crushers in the field, through the excellent cooperation of the managements in the Mesabi Iron Range, and data were obtained which closely corroborated the established trends. The capacity equation resulting from the test work is made up of a series of factors, each representing the contributing effects of setting, speed, width of chamber, nip angle, feed density, type of jaw plates, stroke, and the overall operating technique. Fortunately, most of these factors were revealed to be in direct proportion to the capacity for straight plate chambers. This equation is also applicable to chambers using curved plates, with slight modifications resulting from the capacity limitation of the upper portion of the crushing chamber. The equation has been derived from tests covering a very wide range of feed density and hardness. It has been found valid, providing that the feed material is either nonpacking in character, as is usual, or allowance in designing the crushing chamber shape has been made to accommodate this characteristic. Preliminary investigation has shown that the equation is also applicable to single-toggle jaw crushers. Conditions of this are that the top of the flywheel rotate towards the top of the crusher opening, and that the horizontal motion of the swing jaw relative to the stationary jaw at the discharge opening be considered as the stroke. Several investigators, mainly concerned with the mechanical properties of the alloys, have studied the so-called aluminum bronzes after various quenching and reheating treatments. Of these works, perhaps the most complete is that of Bouldoires, who studied changes of length, electrical conductivity, thermoelectric force, hardness and micro-structure on tempering quenched alloys containing 5 to 20 per cent of aluminum, although the work of Carpenter and Edwards,² Curry13 Greenwood,4 Braesco,5 Matsuda,67 Grard8 and others has added much to our knowledge of the changes occurring during tempering. The so-called acicular ß decomposes on tempering at temperatures between 350" C. and the eutectoid, giving rise to a Widmanstätten structure of a needles in a matrix of 6 or fine a + 6, associated with an increase in hardness and almost complete loss of ductility. Matsuda studied the eutectoid transformation by means of dilatation and electrical conductivity measurements during cooling at different rates. He found that on cooling at the rate of 10" C. per minute there was a decrease in electrical resistance and in length instead of the usual increase which occurred with slow rates of cooling. On tempering the rapidly cooled samples, the increase commenced at about 400" C. and at 520" C. the resistance and length had reached the equilibrium values. These peculiarities he accounted for as being due to a transitional phase ß&apos; being formed, ß&apos; having an electrical resistance and volume less than either ß or a + 6. Schmucker, Jr.—The writer wishes to point out that an acicular growth of austenite, similar to that described in the author&apos;s paper, was recently observed in an alloy steel of only 0.06 C content. This steel, which represents an 0.07 max C, 1.35 Cr, 0.55 Ni, 0.20 Mo analysis, combines the characteristics of minimum hardness in the annealed condition with maximum hardenability and is therefore suited primarily for cold-hobbing applications. The acicular austenite formation in this steel was observed accidentally during a determination of its Ac1 temperature. The samples used in this investigation represented as-forged bar stock which had been given a preliminary temper at 1300°F. The critical (Ac1) temperature was finally established at 1400 °F. Fig. 15 represents the microstructure of the sample which had been heated at 1450°F for ½ hr, water quenched, and tempered at 600°F for ½ hr (for the purpose of darkening the martensite). It will be observed from the distribution of the darkened areas of martensite that the parent austenite grains formed at 1450°F had grown in an acicular manner and still occupied only a small percentage of the total area. The remainder of the area contains the original equiaxed ferrite grains in which new austenite had as yet scarcely formed. However, the tiny isolated martensitic patches at several points where three or more ferrite grains intersect indicate that small austenite grains had formed and started to grow in an apparently equiaxed fashion. Fig. 16 represents the prior microstructure of an original sample in the as-forged and tempered condition, before it was heated -above the critical temperature. It has been customary at our opening sessions, for the presiding officer to address you on the general development of one or another of our several professions, or upon some important feature of Mining or Metallurgical Engineering. It is somewhat embarrassing to his successor that our former President, Dr. Raymond, expert as he is in every one of these professions, has been accustomed to keep them all, in their turn, prominently before yon. In selecting for this occasion a subject necessarily connected with iron and steel, I have thought that a review of these manufactures, with reference to some of their more pressing needs for improvement, will be more timely than a general or statistical paper. I shall endeavor to confine my remarks to a few specific defects of practice and management, and to their equally specific and more or less developed remedies. That serious defects exist; that they must be remedied ; that the manufacture is indeed already on the verge of transition, will be generally admitted. But it cannot be revolutionized all at once, however desirable the technical results might he, for that would bankrupt the business at large. We cannot afford to pull down and rebuild all our blast-furnaces that do not make a ton of pig iron with 25 cwt. of fuel; nor to replace all our hand-puddling furnaces with revolving ones, even if we could select the best revolver. Although the soft steels promise to supplant iron for most structural purposes, there are neither money nor present market to warrant all at once replacing our iron works, or half of them, with steel works. Since, then, these manufactures can neither stand still nor be suddenly metamorphosed, their managers are saying to one another: " We must feel our way into larger development; we must work gradually into better practice; we must improve a little at a time."

THE year 1923 was one of great importance in northern Louisiana and southern Arkansas, so far as the&apos; development and expansion of previously discovered oil and gas fields were concerned. However, the search for new fields failed to produce a single discovery that led to important development during the period; in this respect, the year was one of discouragement to the prospector. During the winter and spring months, an especially active "wildcat" campaign was in. progress in southern Arkansas, and a large number of tests were drilled in northern. Louisiana but this activity subsided during the summer and fall. By the close of the year, only routine drilling was in effect in the fields; and only two new areas-Cotton Valley, in Webster Parish, and an area in Union Parish, La.-were showing any important activity because of favorable oil showings. Further drilling is contemplated in both of these areas, and the present feeling is that one or the other may produce the next oilfield in this territory. Briefly, the development of the Smackover field was the overshadowing event of the year. In. southern Arkansas, important development also took place in the East El Dorado, Stephens, and Irma fields; but all of these were relatively small. In northern Louisiana, many new oil wells were drilled in the Bellevue field, and many new gas wells in the Monroe field. In the old Caddo field, a large number of the deep Woodbine wells were plugged back to the "chalk rock," where a high gravity oil is obtained. In the other fields, only a few small wells were drilled. Therefore, Arkansas, furnished the real development of the year in this area. The production for the year showed a material increase over that of 1922, due, chiefly, to Smackover, and practically altogether to the Arkansas fields. In Louisiana, every field, except Caddo, Bellevue, and Elm Grove, showed slight to marked declines; while in Arkansas, El Dorado was the only field that declined throughout the year.

THE Smackover oil and gas field lies in Ouachita and Union Counties, Ark., in the south-central part of the state, in T.15 and 16S., R.15, 16, and 17W. It is 10 miles north of El Dorado, the principal business and railroad center in the south-central part of the state, and extends from the town of Smackover in all directions. Productive territory having an aggregate area of nearly 55 sq. mi. has been developed. It extends 6 miles from north to south and 12 miles from east to west. The field may be divided into two parts: the east district, which includes the area east of the town of Smackover, and the west district, which includes the area west of the town of Smackover. In relation to the neighboring productive fields of Arkansas, the Smackover field is 9 miles north of .the El Dorado oil and gas field, 8 miles slightly west of north of the East El Dorado oil and gas field, and 16 miles east of the Stephens oil field. Smackover was discovered in May, 1922, when the Oil Operators Trust drilled well No. 1 on the J. T. Murphy farm, in the southeast quarter of sec. 8, T. 16S., R.15W. This well is located almost, on the top of the Norphlet dome and was drilled to the Nacatoch sand. It had an initial open flow volume of 30,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, and a rock pressure of 950 lb. per sq. in. In July, 1922, the V. K. F. Co. completed the first oil well in sec. 29, T.15S., R.15W., on the north side of the Norphlet dome, and 3 miles north of the first gas well. This well started the active development of the north and northwest sides of the dome.1

THE copper industry in the Province of Katanga, in the Belgian Congo, which is now controlled and operated by the Union Minere du Haut Katanga, had its inception many years ago in the vision of a Scotsman, Robert Williams, now Sir Robert Williams, Baronet. He it was who personally negotiated the mineral concession with King Leopold of Belgium, sent in the prospecting parties who located most of the present mines of the company, later arranged for the Belgian participation from which the present company was formed, and has been its active mentor ever since. The idea back of his efforts was the establishment of an industry on the Congo-Zambezi divide, of sufficient importance to draw up to it the head of the Cape to Cairo Railroad, the dream of Sir Cecil Rhodes, and the consummation of which he had left as a legacy to Mr. Williams, his successor. The reports of the prospecting expeditions showed that copper in profitable quantity was there, but many difficulties lay in the way of the establishment of the infant industry. The isolated location of the mines, various tribal wars, the Boer War, and many other factors contributed to making progress very slow. However, in spite of these difficulties the railroad was finally built and a blast-furnace plant erected at Lubumbashi, near Elisabethville, the capital of the Province. Operations of this plant were started in 1911, treating high-grade oxidized ores and producing pig copper by a reducing smelting. Production has been continuous since that time and the company has grown so that at present it ranks as the largest individual copper producer in the industry. It is a fitting monument to the foresight, optimism and driving force of its founder, and the progressive policies of his Belgian colleagues. In January, 1914, the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga engaged as its consulting engineer, Archer E. Wheeler, metallurgical engineer, at that time general superintendent of the Great Falls plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mr. Wheeler was commissioned by the Board of Directors to proceed into Katanga, and make all necessary investigations to enable him to report on a comprehensive development program, and to recommend a scheme of treatment particularly for their low grade

Cast copper alloys containing 10, 20, and 30 pct Ni and 0.75 to 0.80 pct Al were machine-milled into chips, then comminuted in a rod mill to fine flake powder utilizing a number of processing variables. The powders here internally oxidized, mostly at 800°C, in a low-pressure oxygen atmosphere. The consolidated powders were hot-extruded into bar stock. Room-tenmperature tension tests, stress-rupture tests mostly at 650°C, but also at 450° and 850°C, and hardness measurements after various annealing temperature treatments to study alloy stability were perfomted. Excellent room-temperature strength, high rupture strength at 650°C, and resistance to recrystallization at 1050°C were obtained. Problems in optimizing conditions for internal oxidation of Cu-Ni base alloys are discussed. THE interesting high-temperature properties of SAP&apos; have stimulated considerable effort in the study of more refractory alloy systems where the potential for high-strength alloys at high temperature is great.2-13 A number of methods have been utilized to produce the desired fine, hard particle dispersions, of which internal oxidation2,9,7 of dilute solid-solution systems offers considerable promise by virtue of the potential for producing ultrafine, well-dispersed oxides. While most of the published works are concerned with pure metal matrices, a number of investigators have studied the effects of solid-solution strengthening.10,19 Use of more complex alloy matrices (for example, aging systems) has been unsuccessful because overaging still occurs at high temperatures in the oxide-containing alloys.14.15 Solid-solution strengthening is, however, effective at very high temperatures9,10 and might be expected to contribute importantly to the strength of oxide-dispersion strengthened alloys. For this study, internal oxidation of solid-solution alloys of copper and nickel, containing small amounts of aluminum, was chosen as the method of alloy preparation. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS Three copper alloys containing about 10, 20, and 30 pct Ni and each containing 0.75 to 0.80 pct A1 (enough to yield about 3.5 vol pct alumina) were prepared as air-cast ingots measuring 2.5 in. diameter by 6 in. high (see Table I for the analyses). Processing steps for all the alloys were as follows (also see Table 11): 1) Homogenization of the ingot at 982°C (1800°F) for 45 hr in an argon atmosphere. 2) Machine milling of ingots into fine chips. Average thickness was about 0.1 to 0.2 mm. 3) Hydrogen reduction of chips at 593°C (1100° F) for 1 hr to reduce copper and nickel oxides. 4) Rod milling of chips to finer powders. 5) Hydrogen treatment of powders as in step 3. 6) Internal oxidation of the powders. 7) Hydrogen treatment of oxidized powders as in step 3. 8) Hydrostatic compression of evacuated powders. 9) Sintering of compacts in hydrogen. 10) Hot extrusion. Variations in processing among the alloys were made in steps 4, 5, and 10 (see Table 11). In the past, two methods were utilized to internally oxidize alloy powders. Preston and Grant3 surface-oxidized dilute Cu-Al powders to obtain the necessary amount of oxygen to oxidize the solute metal (aluminum and silicon), and then permitted the formed copper oxide to diffuse and react with the solute in an argon atmosphere. Bonis and Grant4 exposed Ni-A1 and other nickel alloys to an oxygen pressure derived from the decomposition of nickel oxide at a preselected temperature, in an argon atmosphere. Both methods are applicable and can be modified to generate a range of oxygen pressures for oxidation of the solute but not the solvent metals. Procedure I: Surface Oxidation of Alloy A3, Cu-10Ni-0.76A1. Powders of -20 to +28 mesh were surface-oxidized at 500°C (932°F) to obtain the desired amount of oxygen for oxidation of the aluminum to alumina; the powder was then sealed in Vycor and heated at 900°C (1652°F) for various times up to

A paper on this subject can cover but a limited range. A thorough visualization of the subject would contemplate a comparative analysis of haulage machines and batteries of various types; the relationship of the storage-battery locomotive to other types of mine haulage should be considered and limiting factors in each case should be carefully developed. This paper will deal briefly with these factors. So far as the writer has been able to determine, the first storage-battery locomotives for mine haulage were manufactured in 1897 or 1898 and were tried out in the Pocahontas coal field, but they were not sufficiently satisfactory to justify their continued use. Battery explosions were frequent and caused serious damage to the wiring, electrical equipment, and the clothing and bodies of the motormen. Sulfuric acid was used as the electrolyte. Experiments were then conducted with locomotives bearing reels of flexible cable through which connection between the motors of the locomotive and the trolley wire was maintained. At first, these reels were turned by hand. Later, the reels were revolved by contact with the wheels of the locomotive, being raised out of contact with the wheels, by a lever, when necessary. About 1902, the plan of operating the reel, by chain and sprocket wheels, from one of the locomotive axles, as is still the practice, was devised. The popular floating motor-driven reel had its inception in the Pocahontas fields prior to 1906. The maximum radius of operation of the reel-type locomotive is about 500 ft. (150 m.) from point of connection with trolley wire. This is ample for room work and certain entry work, but the need for a machine that would operate entirely independently of the trolley wire was so great that, with the development of the storage battery, renewed efforts were made to manufacture a successful storage-battery locomotive. About 1908, the gasoline locomotive was introduced. In spite of many objections to this type of machine for such work, the fact that hundreds of these machines were purchased was proof of the need for a machine operating independently of the trolley.
