Under the Communist regime marked industrial progress has been achieved on the China mainland. Within a decade, the country has been transformed from an economy primarily agricultural to one bristling with industrial possibilities. The industrial capacity of Communist China is beginning to approach that of Japan and will probably surpass it by 1962, the last year of the Second Five-Year Plan. The slogan already is Beat the United Kingdom by 1972, a goal which most observers feel will be achieved ahead of schedule. During the early years of the industrialization program in Communist China, emphasis has been placed on basic goods; hence additional time will be needed to make large quantities of the more complicated products. However, regardless of the current stage of industrial development, it is apparent that the necessary forward momentum has been created. The many capital construction projects being brought into production and the additional projects being initiated confirm this observation. The accuracy of Communist China's industrial statistics can be questioned, but their order of magnitude is clear. To properly evaluate the industrial capability of the country, differentiation must be made between the absolute quantities that reflect overall strength and the per capita quantities that reflect living standards. While Communist China is well on the road to becoming a world power, its living standards will remain below European levels for many years to come.

THE large increase in the wages of mine workers makes it imperative that all factors tending to limit production per miner be eliminated, if possible. The trolley and storage-battery locomotive, mining machine, hoisting engine, mining system, etc. have increased the possible output per man. But this output is still limited by the capacity of the hoisting engine and cable and by the size of the mine car. The superiority of skip hoisting in metal mining is shown by its almost universal adoption. By varying the size of skip and the rope speed, any desired hoisting tonnage can be secured and, since only one kind of material is handled and breakage is unimportant, the loading of the skips can be easily and cheaply effected from bins into which the cars are dumped. The cars may then be designed to fit the conditions in the mine instead of being a compromise between hoisting and mining conditions, very likely suiting neither. In coal mines, the usual practice has been to hoist the car to the surface, either on platform or self-dumping cages. Of late years the number of skip-hoisting plants in coal mines has been rapidly increasing, but there is more or less inertia to overcome in establishing so radical a change in practice; also the earlier skip operations were not uniformly successful. As a result, it became evident that metal-mining practice would require radical modification before skip hoisting could be successfully used in coal mining.

The remarks that follow are based substantially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which has been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more- difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in inter- mediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1-1/2%. The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present. Most of the rich, readily accessible placers were mined by our forefathers. Current opportunities exist: (1) in remote areas where infrastructure has been absent in the past, or development has been prohibited by adverse ownership - political or commercial; (2) in deposits that could not be mined by equipment available to our forefathers; (3) in deposits unidentified by our forefathers; (4) where the-price-of-product/cost ratio is substantially better than in earlier years; or (5) a combination of those factors. When I entered the placer business in the late 1930s, and subsequently, a prevailing opinion believed that glacial deposits should be avoided as irregular in mineral content and composition, and unrewarding to explore and develop; yet an operator has been mining a fluvio-glacial deposit profitably for the past 17 years. Rich buried placer channels, of ten called paleo-channels were worked in the last century, generally by hand methods, and under conditions that would be unacceptable today. Exploration and mining equipment now available make some of these channels attractive targets. Well-known examples are in California and Australia. The formation of a commercial placer requires a source of valuable minerals. Above primary deposits, there may be eluvial deposits formed by the erosion of gangue minerals and the concentration "in situ" of valuable minerals. Down slope from these deposits are the hillside or colluvial deposits, and below them are the alluvial deposits of redeposited material. Most of the great placer fields of the world are the result of several generations of erosion and deposition. Well-known examples are in California and Colombia. Gold is a very resistant and malleable material, and gold placers may extend for 64 or 80 km (40 or 50 miles) along a river system. Platinum is less malleable, but is very resistant to disintegration. Diamonds are extremely hard, and (especially gem diamonds) may be found over great lengths of a river system. Cassiterite is less resistant to disintegration, and tin placers seldom extend over two miles without resupply from an additional source or sources of mineralizaton. Tungsten minerals are generally more friable, and within a few hundred yards of the source disintegrate to the point that they are uneconomical to recover. Rutile, ilmenite and zircon placers generally result from the weathering of massive deposits, and may be encountered over extensive areas; most are fine grained and durable. What does a geologist or mining engineer look for in placer exploration? The old adage to look for a mine near an existing mine is still valid. You need a source of valuable mineral. Then you require conditions for concentration, which means a satisfactory gradient and/or other conditions that will permit heavy minerals to settle. Nicely riffled gravel, often called a shingling of the bars, is conducive to placer formation. Coarser gravel is logically associated with coarser gold. Excessive clay and/or high stream velocities in narrow channels can carry gold far downstream and distribute it uncommercially over a large area. When material is extremely fine, in situ weathering and concentration become more important. Placers frequently occur distant from lode mines, and one must remember that in a larger watershed the exceptional floods that occur once in a hundred or a thousand years can move great quantities of material long distances. The carrying power of water is said to vary with the fifth or sixth power of its velocity. I am not ready to disagree with Waldemar Lindgren and accept that many commercial placers are substantially enriched by the chemical deposition of gold from solutions; however, I have seen crystalline gold in clayey material quite distant from known sources of primary gold that is dif-

THE outstanding characteristic of the last hundred years has been the world-wide rise in the standard of living. Man's dominion over nature is increasing with an accelerating pace and more and more the forces and materials of this world are being made to serve man's necessities and his convenience. We demand both quantities and varieties of goods that were beyond the dreams, to say nothing of the reach, of our fore-fathers, and our possession of them has become so much a matter of course that they excite no remark. Literally, thousands of young folks have required an explanation of a recent popular song, "Thanks for the Buggy Ride," for the reason that their own experience does not extend back into the pre-flivver age. This transition from the use of vehicles made mainly of wood and drawn by animal power, to metal made cars propelled by mineral fuels is all but complete and the memory even of older conditions is already fading. This is symbolic of what is happening all around us. In a recent book, Dr. Frank J. Goodenough, president of Johns Hopkins University, referred to Chinese civilization as a ?vegetable" civilization meaning thereby that the Chinese depend mainly upon the plant world for food, clothing and other necessities and luxuries. Our own people did the same hardly more than a hundred years ago. In 1820, this country produced and used only 5 lb. of pig iron per capita, but a quick and enormous change was wrought in the hundred, years that followed, and in 1920 the amount was 119 times as much, or 597 lb. It has since increased even beyond this and touched a peak of 809 lb. in 1923. In that year our output was more than twice that of 1903 and nine times that of 1883. This increase in production

In June, 1911, the writer spent a few days in studying the economic geology of the vicinity of Park City. During this rather hurried visit a number of specimens of ore were collected, which have since been examind. The results of these investigations show that bournonite (PbCu-SbSa) is present in the ores in greater or less quantity. This fact has never before been reported, as far as can be learned. The failure to recognize this mineral is due to its similarity to tetrahedrite, with which it has probably been confused during a long period of years. Jamesonite (Pb2sb2s6) has been reported from the region in a rather doubtful manner, but the writer has seen it in notable amounts from several mines, and can offer the first analysis of this mineral from the district. Calamine (HzZn2SiO5) was found at one mine and has never been ecognized and reported from the district. Geogbaphy and Geology Park City, Utah, is located at an elevation of about 7,000 ft. above sea level on the eastern slope of the Wasatch mountains. It is situated approximately 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. ' The geology and ore deposits have been described in detail by Bout well and Woolsey.' The mines visited are situated south-southeast from the town. The Silver King Coalition mine is located in Woodside gulch about 1 mile southeast of Park City, at an altitude of about 8,100 ft. The other mines visited were the Daly West and Quincy, which are in Empire canyon about 2 miles sontheast of the town, at elevations of 8,300 to 8,500 ft. respectively. The Daly Judge tunnel goes into the mountain from Empire canyon about 1 mile south of the city, at an altitude of 7,700ft.

At a meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials at Atlantic City, June, 1908, Dr. C. B. Dudley, in his presiden-tial address,' showed the vital necessity of not only making a steel rail as good as in the past, but of making it considerably better in order to meet the present and prospective requiremeuts of railroads. Doctor Dudley requested the co-operation of all who from personal experience could give information that would result in bringing about the production of a steel rail that could be relied upon to meet the present requirements. I have had considerable experience in the practical manufacture of steel of almost every grade, during the past 40 years, and I shall suggest changes that will bring about the results desired. Doctor Dudley has had a long experience as chemical and metallurgical expert for the Pennsylvania railroad, but he frankly admits that up to the present time both he and other metallurgical authorities lack the practical knowledge of steel-making that is necessary to state correctly the reasons for the unreliability of the steel rails now produced. The necessity is self-evident for more positive practical knowledge on the part of these experts of what is possible and what is impossible regarding the practical manufacturing of steel rails from the ingot to the finished product. Chemical knowledge in steel-making is far ill advance of what it was years ago, and might be said to cover every requirement (in that department) for producing reliable steel. The Flat Gap mine is located on Copper Ridge in the Appalachian Valley of East Tennessee. Large zinc orebodies occupy zones of solution and collapse breccias in Lower Ordovician Kingsport limestone and dolomite. The principal ore mineral is sphalerite and the principal gangue is dolomite. The ore-bearing horizons are considerably more than 95% covered by thick residual clay. Geochemical prospecting under these conditions is an effective exploration technique which played an important role in the discovery and exploration of the Flat Gap mine. The Flat Gap mine, an important zinc deposit of the Appalachian type, is located in the Copper Ridge Belt in the Valley of Tennessee approximately 30 miles northeast of the Mascot-Jefferson City zinc district (Fig. 1). The ore is found in large stratigraphically linked deposits in solution and collapse breccias of the Kingsport, Longview and, to a minor extent, Mascot formations of Lower Ordovician age. The principal ore mineral is sphalerite and the principal gangue minerals are dolcrmite and accessory pyrite. There is local minor galena and very rare barite and fluorite. The ore-bearing horizons are covered by about 20 to 100 ft or more of residual clay except where active streams have exposed bedrock. Considerably less than 5% of the favorable host rocks are exposed in outcrop, and this nearly complete soil cover creates a serious obstacle to exploration. Comprehensive surveys of the base metal content of soils furnish a useful substitute for outcrop geology, and under favorable conditions, this technique is a very valuable prospecting tool. A metallographic study was made of deformation twinning (Neumann lamellae) in ingot iron slowly deformed in tension at —196O and —150°C. The results showed that twinning is initiated mainly during the initial stages of plastic deformation. However, the breadth of the twins generally increases with increase in strain up to fracture of the specimen. HE results of an investigation of the effect of low I temperatures on the flow, fracture, strain hardening, and strain aging characteristics, and the true stress-strain relationship for specimens of ingot iron deformed in tension were reported recently.1,2 In that study specimens of ingot iron, in different initial conditions, were slowly deformed in tension at various temperatures between —196" and +100°C. A phenomenon observed, but only briefly reported, was the formation of deformation twins (Neumann lamellae) in the specimens deformed at the lower temperatures. Preliminary metallographic examination of these specimens indicated that there was apparently some correlation between the deformation twinning and the strain of the specimen and that this factor merited further investigation. Some recent investigations have indicated a direct association of Neumann lamellae and the fracture of the metal. Bruckner".' * postulated that the twinning immediately precedes the fracture and the latter is initiated by the stopping of the propagation of twins, either at subgrain boundaries or at other structural features. Tipper and Sullivan5 postulated that Neumann lamellae are initiated by the shock or a shock wave set up at fracture in the still highly stressed unbroken metal, and that a high rate of deformation is a necessary condition for their formation. An extensive metallographic examination, therefore, was made of many of the specimens used in the study of ingot iron at this Bureau and of additional specimens deformed to selected strains under various conditions. The present paper summarizes the effects of deformation under these conditions upon the breadth and scope of the deformation twins. Other features of twinning will be discussed in another paper. Material and Testing Procedure All of the specimens were prepared from one lot of ingot iron, as hot-rolled, of chemical composition other than iron as follows: C, 0.02 pct; Mn, 0.02; P, 0.005; S, 0.018; Si, 0.002; Cu, 0.10; 0, 0.058; and N, 0.002. Cylindrical tensile specimens with a 2 in. gage length were used. The reduced section was slightly tapered from each end; the diameter (0.438 in.) at the midsection of the gage length was about 0.003 in. less than at the ends. The specimens were finished to the final dimensions by grinding and polishing in the axial direction. The ends of the specimens were machined with 3/4 in. x 10 threads and the shoulder fillets were machined to a radius of 0.75 in. The specimens were extended slowly in tension (deformation rate less than 0.5 pct reduction in area per minute) while immersed in an appropriate cryogenic liquid maintained at the desired temperature. The minimum diameter of the specimen was measured during the test by means of a specially designed reduction of area gage accurate to 0.0001 in." A detailed description of the testing equipment and the method of maintaining the desired temperature is given in a previous paper.' Each specimen, after deformation to a specified strain at a selected temperature, was sectioned longitudinally and examined metallographically. The preparation of specimens for metallographic examination was carried out in the usual manner by mechanical polishing and etching. Results and Discussion Deformation twins in specimens of ingot iron extended slowly in tension at —196" and —150°C are shown by the representative micrographs of Figs. 1

Knowledge of the theory underlying the behavior of mixtures of fluids in reservoir rocks is essential to the proper solution of certain types of problems in petroleum production, but is as yet incompletely developed. The object of this paper is to show the application of well established thermody-namic and physical principles to these problems, and thus to assist in the development of the basic theory. For convenience the problems to be considered here may be divided into two groups: 1. Static problems, involving only the static balance between capillary forces and those due to the difference in densities of the fluids; i.e., gravitational forces. 2. Dynamic problems, involving analysis of the motion oi mixtures of immiscible fluids in porous media under the influence of forces due to gravity, capillarity, and an impressed external pressure differential. Capillary Equilbrium in Sands Under this heading the static type of problem will be discussed and the results of experimental investigations on the capillary properties of unconsolidated sands will be presented. Although the discussion of this section is, in a sense, prefatory to the treatment of problems of mixture flow, the concepts developed here have considerable intrinsic importance apart from their ap-plication to flow problems. For, it is reason-able to postulate that the reservoir fluids are, owing to their long existence in undis- turbed mutual contact prior to exploitation, in substantial equilibrium. It follows that their distribution in the reservoir at the time of tapping should be entirely predictable from the theory of capillary equi librium, provided certain experimentally measurable properties of the reservoir rock are known. Knowledge of the distribution of the several fluids in the reservoir is, ol course, helpful in the estimation of reserves and in other problems. It is to be emphasized that throughout the discussion of capillary statics it is assumed that the fluids are in equilibrium from the capillary standpoint. Thus, water, where it is referred to as being in a reservoir, will be understood to be interstitial water, present at the time of drilling the reservoir, commonly termed "connate" water. The theory developed here is perfectly general for any porous solid, whether a carefully prepared unconsolidated sand or a natural sandstone from an oil reservoir. At present, however, only problems involving clean, unconsolidated sands can be made to yield numerical solutions, since only such sands have been adequately investigated experimentally. Experimental evaluation of the pertinent properties 01 natural reservoir rocks will permit the extension of the numerical treatment to problems involving these materials. We shall now consider in some detail the static equilibrium of fluid mixtures in porous solids: that is, the manner in which the reservoir fluids are distributed vertically whell the Forces due to capillarity are just balanccd by those due to gravitation.

This paper presents a sunimary of the results of a study of the Dornick Hills-Springer sand reservoir of the Velma Pool. Stephens County, Oklahoma. The data are of interest because this type of reservoir is unusual in the mid-continent area. The reservoir is characterized by very steep dips and a relatively thick producing section. Its up-dip productive limit is defined by truncation of the productive sands, and the down-dip limit is defined by deterioration of sand quality rather than by the presence of an oil-water contact. The crude oil is of 29" API gravity, is relatively viscous and was saturated with dissolved gas at the original reservoir pressure. Consideratiqn of the physical characteristics of the reservoir indicates that natural water encroachment will be negligible, and that the producing mechanism will be a dissolved gas drive augmented by gravity drainage. Performance to date tends to confirm this. INTRODUCTION It is the purpose of this paper to present some of the features of the Dor-nick Hills - Springer sand reservoir which are unusual in mid-continent operations. The study was undertaken in an attempt to define the producing mechanism or mechanisms that will control reservoir performance, as an aid in determining well completion and production practices. GEOLOGY The reservoir under consideration is a series of sand bodies of Pennsylva-nian age found in the Lower Dornick Hills and/or Springer formations. For the purpose of this paper, the sand series is referred to as the Dornick Hills-Springer sand. This sand series lies on the northeast flank of the Velma anticline, and dips very sharply to the northeast in TWP 1S-5W, the average dip being about 45º. This paper presents a sunimary of the results of a study of the Dornick Hills-Springer sand reservoir of the Velma Pool. Stephens County, Oklahoma. The data are of interest because this type of reservoir is unusual in the mid-continent area. The reservoir is characterized by very steep dips and a relatively thick producing section. Its up-dip productive limit is defined by truncation of the productive sands, and the down-dip limit is defined by deterioration of sand quality rather than by the presence of an oil-water contact. The crude oil is of 29" API gravity, is relatively viscous and was saturated with dissolved gas at the original reservoir pressure. Consideratiqn of the physical characteristics of the reservoir indicates that natural water encroachment will be negligible, and that the producing mechanism will be a dissolved gas drive augmented by gravity drainage. Performance to date tends to confirm this. INTRODUCTION It is the purpose of this paper to present some of the features of the Dor-nick Hills - Springer sand reservoir which are unusual in mid-continent operations. The study was undertaken in an attempt to define the producing mechanism or mechanisms that will control reservoir performance, as an aid in determining well completion and production practices. GEOLOGY The reservoir under consideration is a series of sand bodies of Pennsylva-nian age found in the Lower Dornick Hills and/or Springer formations. PULVERIZED coal was first used for firing cement kilns about 45 years ago, with such success that it has continued in general use. Based on cost, pulverized coal is usually the most economical fuel. In some localities natural gas or oil is cheaper, but 85.5 per cent of all cement kilns at present are fired with pulverized coal. The pulverized-coal flame is well suited to kiln conditions. Its soft, luminous nature gives it a high radiating property and the length of the flame can be readily varied to suit conditions in a kiln of any length. Ash and slag cause most of the difficulties incident to the burning of coal. In a cement kiln, however, the ash, being similar in composition to the raw mix and being deposited uniformly in the mix and clinker, occasions no difficulty as long as it remains constant in quality and quantity. Until 6 years ago almost all cement kilns using pulverized coal employed the bin system. The coal was dried and pulverized in a separate plant and delivered into a bin at the kiln. Thus the bin system requires driers, storage-type pulverizers, conveying systems, individual kiln bins, pulverized-coal feeders and primary air fans. The direct-fired system requires only a pulverizer and a blower. Fig. I shows typical plants. The first installations of direct-fired pulverizers were of the impact type but fineness of pulverization was both inadequate and variable. About 1927 a few direct-fired installations employing tube-type pulverizers were made, which were much more satisfactory. As more efficient pulverizers were developed from 1934 on, equipment for direct firing was installed at a large number of plants, until now 196 of about 900 kilns in use in the United States are direct-fired. Most of these replaced antiquated bin systems. PROCESS OF BURNING CEMENT CLINKERS The process of burning cement clinkers is fundamentally one of heat transfer. In boilers and other heat-exchange apparatus the area of the surface receiving heat from the gases is the best unit for comparing output. This seems to be equally true for kilns. The inside kiln surface is the heat-receiving surface and its area is used as the unit of kiln size in the following comparisons. Heat input is based on British thermal units in the fuel. E. G. Bailey,1 in his work on boiler-furnace heat absorption, has used the unit "B.t.u. available." This is the practical calorific power of the fuel, plus the heat in the air used for combustion. In other words, it is the heat available for useful work in the furnace or kiln. The unit of kiln output is barrels per hour. The composition of the raw mix, the percentage of water in the slurry of wet plants and hardness of burning all affect the output. These conditions, however, are hard to evaluate and probably have less effect on the output than irregularities of raw feed and clinker discharge and inexpert control of combustion. WET VS. LOOKING back over the industrial and commercial progress of the United States during the last half century the outstanding influence has been the growth of the use of the fluid fuels, petroleum and natural gas. At the turn of the century these fuels supplied only 8 per cent of the energy requirements of the nation. Last year nearly 45 per cent of our heat and power supply were derived from these fuels. These figures are merely statistical reflections of the fundamental change in our national economy which has affected, in so many amazing ways, the life of this generation. The factors which have caused this change are still operative. The trend which has thus been established still continues and growth in the use of these fuels is, in all probability, still well below the peak, both for this country and for other parts of the world. Two great wars have not essentially changed this basic trend; if anything they have served to accelerate it. World War II did not alone increase our requirements for liquid fuels; it demonstrated the absolute essentially of petroleum resources to our national security. Petroleum is no longer just an important factor in our national standard of living; it is the most important single element in our national defence-

Ozark Lead Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation, was formed in 1961 to operate in the State of Missouri. The orebody presently being mined was discovered in January of 1962, and over a quarter of a million feet of drilling was done to determine its value and extent. In addition, a development shaft, six feet in finished diameter, was drilled into the orebody by an oil field rig in order to support the results of the core drill samples and to obtain bulk samples of ore for metallurgical pilot plant testing, upon the results of which the primary flowsheet was established. The design criteria developed from the flowsheet was based upon a 6000 TPD plant throughput and the subsequent engineering and construction of the mine and concentrating plant was completed in June 1968. The plant, which is designed to mine and mill 6000 tons of ore per day and produce 60,000 tons of lead and 8000 tons of zinc in concentrate annually, is located approximately 110 air miles south- west of Saint Louis. MINERALOGY The orebody occurs in the Bonneterre dolomitic limestone formation in the form of irregular masses of disseminated sulphides in essentially horizontal beds. The Lamotte sandstone underlies the Bonneterre formation and is barren in values. Principal ore minerals include galena with lesser amounts of sphalerite and some copper minerals. THE increase in the production of iron has been accompanied by a growing demand for an improved quality, and more especially at the present time, in the manufacture of Bessemer steel, which is rapidly becoming an important branch of industry. This has led the makers of pig iron to a careful investigation of the composition of the materials from which their metal is produced, the inquiry being greatly assisted by a cordial alliance of science and practice. Formerly, chemical science was held in abeyance, or admitted in a hesitating experimental way ; but now it is received as a valuable auxiliary, and its decisions are accepted as final and conclusive. It is called on to assist the iron-maker in determining the quality of his stock, and to detect the presence of injurious elements in his fuel, ores, flux, or iron. The object of this paper is to submit the method now in use at the furnaces of the Kemble Coal and Iron Company in the Broad Top coal and iron region, for removing, by a process of crushing and washing, slate and other impurities from coal, designed, when coked, for furnace fuel. It is not contemplated to claim very advanced progress in this work, believing that it is susceptible of improvement, but to show that some progress has been made in a comparatively new field, and it is hoped in the right direction, since coke is probably destined to become the principal fuel in the metallurgy of iron. The Broad Top coal region occupies an isolated geographical position, standing 25 miles east from the Alleghany field. It is associated with the latter by the structure of its coal, and more closely with the Cumberland field by a similarity in the quality of coal.
