At a meeting of the New York Section, on May 23, 1918, the sole subject of discussion was the nature and occurrence of iron ores in certain parts of the world." Owing to the importance of this subject, it has been deemed advisable to publish the remarks made at that meeting in the form of a paper, for presentation at the Milwaukee Meeting. HARDER† During the years immediately preceding the war, the iron ores of Brazil were attracting the attention of iron operators both in Europe and in the United States. This was due to the large quantities of practically undeveloped ore available, and to its great purity. It is reasonably safe to state that had capital not been diverted from the exploitation of these deposits to war purposes, Brazilian iron ores would probably now be offered in European and American markets. It is certain that after the war these ores will play a prominent part in the economic reconstruction of Europe and perhaps in the development of America. The Brazilian iron-ore field ranks among the six great iron-ore districts of the world, the others being: (1) The Lake Superior district of the United States; (2) the Lorraine ore field of northern France and southern Germany; (3) the magnetic deposits of northern Sweden; (4) the ore fields of Oriente, Cuba; and (5) the Wabana ores of Newfoundland. It is doubtless the greatest known undeveloped iron-ore district in the world. The town of Goldfield, Nevada, with the exception of six stone buildings, was burned to the ground to-day. One man is dead from causes attributed to the fire. A woman is missing and is believed to have perished and several persons were treated for burns as the result of the conflagration believed to have been of incendiary origin which started in the old Tenderloin District. The water supply was not sufficient and dynamite only scattered the frame structures and added kindling to the flames which were fanned by a forty-mile wind. Newspaper Dispatch, July 6. No former Goldfield resident could read that dispatch with unmixed feelings. About two o'clock one morning the crowded train from San Francisco landed me in Goldfield no more hours late than it habitually was. The desert air was clear and crisp and bracing but the pandemonium of cab and bus drivers did not drown out the sounds of music and merriment which floated from the blaze of light which was Goldfield about three-quarters of a mile from the station. As I stood in the ferry house, at the foot of Market Street, awaiting the Oakland Ferry, an old friend of mine, down to see who was departing for the greatest boom town of this generation, informed me that if I had made no reservation for quarters in Goldfield, I would be unable to obtain any, even chairs in the hotel lobbies were renting for $4 per night, and volun-teered the use of his room there for my convenience until his return. He described the house and location, which I identified without difficulty, but found no one to direct me to the room. HIS investigation originated as a result of a pre-vious experimental study' of the magnetic properties of Fe-Co alloys fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique. Densities of powder compacts prepared for the magnetics investigation varied from 7.45 to 7.70 g per cu cm or from 93 to 95 pct of the experimental value of 8.08 g per cu cm for a fused alloy of the same composition.' While this range of density is considered sufficiently high for most applications, the highest possible density is to be desired for maximum magnetic properties. By applying a technique similar to the one described above to a pure electrolytic iron powder, Rostoker³ was able to achieve a density of 7.895 g per cu cm, which is the highest density ever reported for sintered iron. While Rostoker's work involved the sintering of an elemental powder rather than a mixture, it was believed that higher densities should also have been obtained for alloys using the above technique because of the recoining operation and the high sintering temperature. Consequently, it was decided to investigate the various factors affecting the density of this alloy with the idea that such a study might lead to higher densities and, as a result, powder alloys having magnetic properties identical with those of the fused alloys. It was believed that the principal reason that near-theoretical densities for the powdered alloy were not obtained was the interference of gases with the normal sintering mechanism. When present during the sintering operation, gases can exert several harmful effects: they can remain on the particle surface and interfere with surface diffusion and plastic flow; they can be released and, under certain conditions, expand the void spaces through gas pressure; or they can remain trapped in the pores and exert a hydrostatic pressure that retards elimination of the pores. Jones,4 Rhines,5 Goetzel," and others have given the effect of gases in the sintering of powder compacts an extensive treatment. Among the more important sources of gases in the sintering process are dissolved gases, adsorbed gases, air entrapped during pressing, and gaseous products of chemical reactions. During sintering adsorbed gases are partly released at a relatively low temperature, while those gases entrapped during pressing cannot escape until their pressure is increased sufficiently through increasing temperature to expand the interpartjcle openings. The remaining adsorbed gases, gaseous reduction products, and dissolved gases produce a similar effect at the higher temperatures. If, in the sintering process, gas evolution occurs after the interpore channels have been sealed, an exaggerated expansion of the void spaces results. This is particularly true if the temperature is high enough for extensive plastic flow. In his fabrication of powder bars from tantalum, Balke7 had to consider the effect of adsorbed hydrogen and provide for its escape during sintering by limiting the compacting pressure to a maximum of 50 tons per sq in. The effect of gases entrapped during pressing was first noted by Trzebiatowski8 when he found that gold and silver powders decrease in density with increasing sintering temperature if pressed at 200 tsi, while they exhibit the usual increase when pressed at 40 tsi. Recent investigators9-11 have also noted that entrapped gases have an effect on the expansion of copper compacts during sintering. Proper provision for the escape of gaseous products of reduction must be made in order to avoid deleterious effects. Myers" states that in the sintering of electrolytic tantalum powder, the temperature was gradually raised to 2600°F with a pause at 2000°F to permit reduction of the oxides. Experimental Details For the present study, 50 pct Co-50 pct Fe compacts in the form of circular disks 1½ in. in diam and 0.15 in. thick were fabricated by the pressing and sintering of a mixture of the elemental powders. It was decided to follow the sintering process by means of liquid permeability measurements, because it was thought that such measurements might serve as a measure of relative pore sizes, as well as a possible indication of the point at which most of the interpore channels become sealed. However, since the permeability as measured by the flow of a liquid, such as ethylene glycol, does not give an absolute indication of the point where the pores have become isolated, a method for determining the percentage of pores connected to the surface was set up. As an additional cross check on the permeability measurements, metallographic methods were used to study the relative pore size. Finally, the property of ultimate interest, the density, was measured. Raw Materials: The powders used consisted of an annealed, 99.9 pct pure, —150 mesh grade of electrolytic iron powder, and a 98 pct pure, —200 mesh grade of reduced and comminuted cobalt powder. The cobalt powder was not further processed either by hydrogen reduction or annealing. The screen analyses for the iron and cobalt powders are given in Table I, while the chemical analyses for each type of powder are listed in Table 11. Table 111 gives the hydrogen loss measurements for the powders according to the M.P.A. Standard Method and for a higher temperature as well. Preparation of Compacts: Equal amounts of the elemental powders were mixed by rotation for 1 hr and then pressed into compacts approximately 0.15

DURING an earlier examination of high-temperature alloy, A-286, the presence of an unknown intermetallic compound was verified by X-ray diffraction. Owing to its prominent appearance at grain boundaries, the arbitrary name of G phase was assigned.' Low-silicon, vacuum-melted heats were found to contain no G phase, and this investigation was initiated to determine the influence of silicon on G-phase formation; additional work was undertaken to extend existing data on other intermetallic compounds and the aging reactions in this group of alloys. Taylor and Floyd2-4 observed that the Ni3Al phase (y') and the Ni8Ti phase (7)) are the only equilibrium intermetailic compounds in nickel ternary alloys containing up to 25 pct Cr and 10 pct Ti or Al. They found that y' can dissolve considerable nickel, chromium, and titanium, although the stoichio-metric composition of 7 remains fixed. Nordheim and Grant5 confirmed that age hardening of 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr alloys of the Nimonic-80 type is due to precipitation of y', where aluminum is partially replaced by titanium. They suggest that optimum hardness and ductility result from increasing the titanium to aluminum ratio toward the end of the y' solubility range and from increasing total titanium and aluminum content to the maximum limit permitted by processing. Such information is necessary for those seeking to improve the service-temperature range and long-time structural stability of high-temperature components. Experimental Methods Compositions of materiais studied. are listed in Table I. Alloys D, E, and F possess representative A-286 analyses; silicon increases from less than 0.02 to 1.75 pct in alloys A to H; in alloys I to K, titanium decreases from 2.24 to 0.39 pct, and aluminum increases from 0.1 6 to 240 pct. Alloys A and D were solution heat treated for 4 hr at 1700°F, oil quenched and aged for 0.5, 2, 6, 12, 30, 70, 200, and 1000 hr at 1200°, 1300°, 1400°, and 1500°F. THE Missouri fire clays are here divided into plastic and semiplastic clays occurring as widespread bedded deposits in east central Missouri and flint and diaspore clays occurring as isolated "sink-hole" deposits in the north central Ozark region. Visual inspection was the first method used in clay prospecting. Thin overburden, hard sandstone "rimrocks," and the occurrence of diaspore float made this method particularly applicable in the flint and diaspore fields. The first drilling tool used was a hand auger. One man can drill 25 to 50 ft. per day at a cost of about 35 cents per foot. Holes can be drilled to a depth of 150 feet. Spud drills are often used where the over burden is hard. This drill uses a slotted earth socket bit. A two-man crew can drill about 100 ft. per day at a cost of about 35 cents per foot. Mechanically powered auger drills have been used extensively in wildcat drilling in the past few years. This type of drill furnishes a continuous set of cuttings. The practical depth limit with this drill is 50 to 60 ft. Two men can drill 300 ft. per day at a cost of about 20 cents per foot. Core drilling is used mainly to prove a known clay deposit. A two-man crew with a No. 22 Sullivan drill can drill about 30 to 40 ft. per day in soft clay, at a cost of about $1.25 per foot.

The relationship between hardenability and weldability has been mentioned many times. The ease of making a hardness survey has led to its wide use as a criterion of weldability and with a given class or series of steels for which the ductility under weld heat-treatment is known the test is entirely suitable. However, in studying a new steel the hardness survey is of less value, since it is based on the assumption that there is a correlation between hardness and ductility. Several attempts have been made to derive indices for weldabilityl and hardenability from the chemical analysis. In most of these proposals the effects of the different elements were considered to be additive, but recently Grossmann2 proposed a novel method of calculating the hardenability of a steel from its chemical composition. In the method proposed, a steel is considered as having a base hardenability due to its car- bon content and grain size, and this base hardenability is multiplied by a factor for each chemical element present. The final product is the hartlenability. The purpose of the present study is to point out the possible relationship between hardenability and the effect of welding on hardness and ductility for a number of plain carbon and low-alloy steels. The composition of the 25 steels reported in this paper as determined by chemical analysis is given in Table I. To eliminate the effect of variations in finishing temperatures, the 1/2-in. plates were normalized after heating for one hour at 1650°F. in a con-trolled-atmosphere furnace. The notion prevails that writing is a knack, that the skilful use of the pen is a gift of nature. This is an error. Dogberry may be responsible for it; he said: "To be a well-informed man is the gift of fortune, but to write and read comes by nature". Because Dogberry said it, we may be sure that Shakespeare thought otherwise. Ability of any sort may be partly innate, but my own observation and experience lead me to conclude that most of the easy writers have become so by constant practice. As I recall the names of men successful with the pen, I remember that most of them have written a great deal and have taken particular pains to improve their style. The suggestion that proficiency in the difficult art is a happy accident provokes a sardonic smile. The larger part of the great writing in our literature is the result of persistent effort. An easy fluency has been the undoing of many; their flamboyant and fantastic scribbling has proved as perishable as froth. This criticism applies to technical writing also; in order that a technical description or discussion may hold the interest of the reader, at least long enough to cause him to read it to the end, the writing must be done carefully and systematically; otherwise it will fail in its purpose of conveying information. Clearness is absolutely essential. "It is not enough to use language that may be understood; it is necessary to use language that must be understood."* The purpose of writing, at least of that which is meant to be read by others, is not only to express ideas but to communicate them. BY surface treatment of coal is meant the application of a material, either solid or liquid, to the surface of pieces of coal. The purposes of surface treatment are varied. They may be to identify or "trade- mark" the coal, to modify the burning characteristics, the coking tendencies, or the behavior of the ash, to prevent the freezing of wet coal, or to control the dust. The control of dust is the usual purpose of surface treatment. TRADE-MARKING COAL The application of color to the surface of coal for the purpose of identification and registration of the trade-mark has been practiced to some extent. In 1928, the Glen Alden Coal Co. began to color its coal and adopted the trade-mark, "Blue Coal." The Old Ben Coal Co. later followed a similar practice with "Green Coal." A commoner means of identification of coal has been the stenciling of designs or pasting labels on large lumps or in the distribution of small cardboard tags through the smaller sizes. The details of the method used to color coal have not been revealed. Usually all of the coal is not treated, because of the expense. Only enough pieces are colored to show clearly when distributed through the coal. The patent literature gives information on some of the methods proposed. Esselen and Weiss have patented the deposition of a coloring material in the valleys of the surface of the coal. Sperr covers the quenching of coke with water containing a pigment or dye that will deposit on the coke. He also suggests electroplating with copper or nickel. Glinsmann subjects the freshly fractured coal surface to the action of an alkali or alkali earth ferricyanide and a ferric salt. Barsky and Hanson specify a method for the application of the same chemicals covered by Glinsmann. COATINGS FOR IMPROVEMENT OF APPEARANCE As a purchaser often judges coal by its appearance, modification of the surface has been attempted from time to time, particularly of the surface of outcrop or stored coal, which has become covered with a brown film of iron oxides, but information is lacking as to the extent or success of the

To modern civilization the platinum metals are of inestimable value. Their distinctive properties, both physical and chemical, render them indispensable in an age in which the processes of the laboratory are becoming an essential part of the daily life of the world. Generally, their function, though vital to particular processes, is not spectacular, and so remains unknown to all except the operators. Early Methods of Manufacture The properties of platinum were recognized as of prime importance for scientific work at a very early date, probably between 1750 and 1760. The difficulty of making articles from it seemed almost insurmountable, because no means of attaining the temperature necessary to melt it were known at that time. It is true that solid platinum could be obtained by fusing the metal with a more volatile metal such as arsenic, which was subsequently driven off by baking, but such a method, at its best, would give only a very brittle product, which was totally unsuitable for the purposes for which it was intended. Little, if any, progress could be made until it was discovered that platinum sponge, heated to white heat and hammered in an iron or clay mold, would metallize and retain the shape of the mold. This was a process that could not be wholly satisfactory but from it developed the method of pressing the sponge in a mold and forging it at white heat into wire or sheet. At present a somewhat similar process must be used for fabricating articles of tungsten, molybdenum and other metals of high fusing point, as with these metals we face today the same problems that the scientists of the eighteenth century encountered with platinum, but possibly the next significant advance in the metallurgy of these metals will be the devising of means to melt and cast them. TO some extent this method of preparing platinum has survived, particularly in Europe. There are one or two objections to it, but they are not serious, as they can be surmounted with proper precautions. In the first place, the material is spongy and its millions of cavities contain entrapped air. Unless this is removed by thorough forging above 1000" C. the resultant sheet shows blisters. INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. STUDIES in the high-temperature separations chemistry of thorium-uranium fuels are complicated by the corrosive nature of these molten metal systems at 1700°C. Separations research pointed toward the removal of fission products from irradiated alloys has included a frozen salt-bed technique which minimizes container reaction with molten metal. The procedure consists of high-frequency induction melting of the metal sample which is supported by a vertical column of unmelted salt. The molten alloy melts its immediate salt environment and as it slowly falls down through the column, many of the fission-product poisons are transferred into the fused salt environment. The molten salt-metal zone is encompassed at all times by unmelted salt, preventing container contact. EXPERIMENTAL Experimental methods were separated into three parts: salt-bed preparation, melting, and analytical evaluation. A) Bed Preparation—The procedure for casting calcium-fluoride briquettes was to compress the powdered salt at 5,000 to 10,000 psi and place this compact in a graphite crucible. This assembly was inserted into a vacuum system and surrounded by an alumina crucible as well as molybdenum, tantalum, or stainless-steel foil thermal-radiation shields. The pressure was reduced and the crucible heated under vacuum to about 800°C with the fore pump operating. Argon was then admitted to about 0.8 atm and heating continued until the CaF2 had melted 5 min at the melting point seemed satisfactory). Apparatus used included a 1-in. graphite crucible with 1/8-in. walls, 1-in. ID in a 2-in. induction coil, and a 6-kw Ajax high-frequency converter. B) Melting—Calcium-fluoride briquettes, 1 in. in diam and 1/2 to 1 in. thick, were prepared and vertically stacked to obtain the desired column length. An irradiated alloy sample (nut = 10") was placed on top of the salt column and the assembly was connected to the vacuum system. After evacuation of 5 to 10 , purified argon was admitted and the system flushed twice. The final argon pressure was about 0.8 atm. The sample was heated by induction at a power of about 6.5 kw. It then melted its way down through the salt and freely dropped into a small alumina crucible. The molten metal is followed during its downward course by the induction coil which is mounted upon a power-driven machine-threaded shaft. Experimental conditions used in the foregoing work

Recent successful applications of emulsion flotation suggested that a detailed study of some of the physicochemical aspects of the process was warranted. The objective of the current research was to provide general information on the electrokinetic properties of emulsion drops of the type commonly used in oxide mineral flotation. Combinations of the parafin oil Nujol and several long-chain reagents in water were studied with respect to the effect of pH on the surface and zeta potentials. It war concluded that for emulsion drops in the presence of a long-chain reagent but in the absence of any other electrolyte which is adsorbed at the oil-water interface, the surface potential will be some two to four times the value of the zeta potential. During the last decade there has been a revival of interest in the so-called agglomeration, or emulsion flotation (in this paper the term emulsion flotation will be used), process. In this flotation technique, a neutral hydrocarbon oil, together with longcnain reagents, usually of a polar-nonpolar structure, are added to the pulp to function as collectors for specific minerals. The combination of oil and longchain reagent is either emulsified prior to addition to the pulp, or in the pulp itself, and the resulting collector species is an oil-in-water emulsion of a neutral hydrocarbon oil emulsified by polar-nonpolar long-chain reagents. Emulsion flotation has been used successfully in the treatment of ores containing iron, manganese,' and titanium oxides. 2 Two other major and long established applications of emulsion flotation are the flotation of coal and Florida phosphate ores. In recent years, emulsion flotation has been particularly successful in the treatment of ores containing oxide minerals which slime readily and, consequently, are difficult to treat by conventional flotation processes. THE ores of mercury of North California are composed of metallic mercury and cinnabar. They are found in serpentine, and are very often associated with chalcedony, in masses more or less irregular, often concentrated enough, however, to furnish ores yielding from three to ten per cent., and sometimes richer. This deposit makes its appearance in Vallejo where it has been worked. North of here the mines are more developed. Most of the quicksilver mines, how¬ever, are situated in Sonoma and Napa Counties. On its outcrop the serpentine rocks have become decomposed, and have often been washed away to a considerable depth, so that in many cases in their neighborhood, what is apparently nothing but ordinary dirt, will frequently contain from two to three per cent. of metallic mercury, with but a trace of cinnabar, in which case, as at the Sonoma mine, it is made up into adobes and distilled. Such material does not require to be mixed with dirt to be made into adobes. Very often, also, the outcrop of the rock, where it is not decomposed, is filled with metallic mercury, so that by striking a pick into it, as at the Rattle-snake mine, a pound or more of mercury at a time will sometimes spurt out. Such rock as this is found in several localities in every stage of impregnation, and usually makes very rich ore. There is generally, however, very little of it, and it is found only in the first workings ; the ore in depth is always cinnabar. At the Rattlesnake mine near Pine Flat, where large quantities of metallic mercury are found, the rock contains so much petroleum that it has been necessary to make special arrangements to burn the carbides of hydrogen, since the distillation of the petroleum causes an extra quantity of poor soot to be formed in the condensation-chambers. At the Geysers the ore is associated with large quantities of sulphur and gypsum, so that in a hand specimen there is often more sulphur than cinnabar, which is a serious impediment to working, especially for the modern style of furnace with iron condensers, and causes so much soot to be formed that it has been known to penetrate as far as the blower, and to so completely clog it as to prevent its revolution. The ore coming from the mine is more or less hand-picked. In one or two cases attempts have been made to treat the poorest, and especially the very fine ores, mechanically as at the California works.

The influence of work-hardening exponent on the variation of fracture toughness with material thickness was studied for high-strength steel, aluminum, and titanium alloys. The results indicate that, when materials are compared at similar fracture toughness to yield strength ratios, the material with the lower work-hardening exponent undergoes the transition from flat to slant fracture at a larger thickness than material with a high work-hardening exponent. In the thickness range where complete slant fracture is obtained the reverse is true and a lower work-hardening exponent results in a lower fracture toughness. The influence of work-hardening exponent on fracture toughness is, therefore, dependent on the particular fracture mode. In the transition region a low work-hardening exponent is beneficial for fracture toughness while in the 100 pct slant region it is detrimental. THROUGH the use of fracture mechanics analyses, the influence of geometric variables on the crack propagation resistance of structures can be interpreted with reasonable consistency. However, in order to gain a more complete understanding of the fracture process, the influence of material parameters on crack propagation must be defined and coupled to the macroscopic fracture mechanics approach. The work-hardening exponent, which characterizes specific material behavior, may serve as an effective parameter to allow some degree of coupling to be accomplished. In the extension of a crack in a specimen of suitable dimensions the propagation process occurs in a stable manner when the crack extension force is balanced by the resistance to crack extension, which exists in the material at the crack tip. As the applied stress, and therefore the crack extension force, on the specimen increases, the resistance also increases primarily because the effective plastic zone at the crack tip, which is the main energy absorption process, becomes larger. Since the work-hardening rate of a material influences the stress-strain relationship, it will also influence the energy absorption process in the plastic enclave at the crack tip and hence should have an effect on crack propagation. A number of studies have been made correlating the strain-hardening exponent or the strain to tensile instability with the ability of a material to resist fracture. Gensamer1 concluded that a low-strain-hardening exponent would result in a steep strain gradient at the base of a notch. He reasoned that a large work-hardening coefficient would result in high-energy ab- sorption due to the increased area under the stress-strain curve. Larson and Nunes2 experimentally observed in Charpy tests on steels heat-treated to below 200,000 psi yield strength that the energy to failure in the fibrous mode, i.e., above the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature, was logarithmically related to the strain-hardening exponent. In order to avoid the complicating effects present in studying materials which undergo a brittle-to-ductile transition, Ripling evaluated the notch sensitivity of a variety of fcc metals with varying work-hardening exponents.3 The results indicated that the relative notch sensitivity, as determined from tests on specimens with a sharp notch, decreased with increasing values of strain hardening. Although the energy required for ductile or fibrous fracture increases with increasing work hardening, high-strength steels often exhibit improved crack propagation resistance when heat-treated to obtain low values of strain hardening.4,5 An analysis of whether low strain hardening is beneficial or detrimental to crack propagation resistance must depend on the particular fracture criterion involved. At temperatures where the material is relatively ductile and the development of a critical strain is required for fracture, high strain hardening increases the energy required to produce failure. In the transition region and below, however, a critical stress law appears to be valid6 and a low rate of work hardening may produce superior resistance to semibrittle crack propagation. The experimental program is aimed at studying these possibilities and determining the specific influence of strain hardening on the crack propagation resistance of several high-strength materials. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The alloys, chosen as representative of various classes of high-strength materials, are summarized in Table I. The heat treatments evaluated along with the smooth tensile properties are presented in Table 11. Pin-loaded sheet tensile specimens were employed to determine the smooth tensile properties. A strain gage extensometer (measuring range 0.200 in.) was used at a strain rate of 0.02 in. per in. per min. The work-hardening exponents were determined from the stress-strain curves generated in the smooth tensile tests and the assumption that the portion of the stress-strain curve beyond the yield point can be described by the power relationship: where a is the true stress, P is the true plastic strain,

THIS paper presents the design and operation of a frothmeter capable of measuring the frothing characteristics of pine oils and other frothing reagents. The experimental data show that the frothability of pine oil is governed by: 1-rate of aeration, 2-time of aeration, 3-height of liquid column, 4-chemical composition of pine oil, 5-pH value of solution, 6-temperature of, solution, and 7-concentration of pine oil in solution. The effect of mineral particles on the behavior of froth also was studied, and the results can be found in a separate paper.1 The results also show that the relative frothabilities of pine oils in the frothmeter generally correlate with those in actual flotation, provided that other factors are kept constant. In addition to pine oils, the other well-established flotation frothers were tested, and the results are included. In this paper, compressed air frothing is the frothing process performed by means of purified compressed air, whereas sucked air frothing is the frothing process accomplished by purified air sucked into the glass cylinder by a vacuum system. The term vacuum frothing denotes that froth was formed by degassing of the air-saturated liquid under a closed vacuum system. Apparatus The frothmeter, shown in Fig. 1, is capable of reproducibly measuring the volume and persistence of froth as well as the volume of air bubbles entrapped in the liquid and is capable of being used for compressed air frothing, sucked air frothing, and vacuum frothing. Fig. la shows that for compressed air frothing, the apparatus consists of an airflow regulating system, 1-3; a purifying and drying system, 4-8; a standardized flowmeter to measure the rate of airflow from zero to 500 cc per sec, 9; and a graduated glass cylinder, 13; equipped with an air regulating stopcock, 10; an air chamber, 11; and a fritted glass disk to produce froth, 12. The fritted glass disk, 5 cm in diam and 0.3 cm thick, has an average pore diameter of 85 to 145 microns. The pyrex glass cylinder has a uniform ID of 5.588 cm and an effective height of 63 cm. The inside cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder was calculated to be 24.53 sq cm, or 3.8 sq in. For sucked air frothing, Fig. lb shows that the apparatus for compressed air frothing is used again, with the following modifications: 1-compressed air and its regulating system, 1-3, are eliminated; and 2-a vacuum system, 16, equipped with a vapor trap, 15, and a vacuum manometer, 17, is added. The vacuum system can be .either a water aspirator or a laboratory vacuum pump. Any desired rate of airflow can be drawn into the glass cylinder, 13, by adjusting the opening of the air regulating stopcock, 10. The sucked air stream is cleaned by the purifing and drying system, 4-8, before entering the glass cylinder, 13. When this setup is used for vacuum frothing, the air regulating stopcock is closed. The frothmeter has been used for almost 3 years and has proved to give reproducible results, as illustrated in Table I. With a magnifying glass and suitable illumination, the frothmeter also can be used to study the attachment of air bubbles to coarse mineral particles.2 Experimental Procedures Except where otherwise stated, the data presented were established by means of the compressed air method. The volume and persistence of froth were recorded respectively at the end of 4 and 6 min of aeration at a constant rate of airflow of 29.3 cc per sec which is equivalent to 71.6 cc per sq cm per min, or 462.6 cc per sq in. per min. The aqueous solution for each test, containing 1000 cc of distilled water and 19.2 ± 0.5 mg frothing reagent, was adjusted to a pH of 6.9 ± 0.2. The volume of froth is expressed as cubic centimeter per square centimeter and is equivalent to the height of the froth column (the distance between the bottom and the meniscus of the froth). The volume of froth was obtained by multiplying the height of froth by the cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder, 24.53 sq cm. Before each test, the glass cylinder, 13, was cleaned thoroughly with jets of tap water, ethyl alcohol, tap water, cleaning solution, tap water, and finally distilled water. ALUMINUM-KILLED, low carbon steel sheets are used extensively for severe deep drawing and other difficult forming operations. They usually, but not always, have a characteristic grain structure in which the grains are elongated both in the lengthwise and in the transverse direction. As described by Burns and McCabe,&apos; a typical grain in the plane of the sheet has its two axes in that plane from 1 Y2 to 4 times as long as the axis normal to the plane of the sheet. Rickett, Kalin, and MacKenzieZ have also reported on the recrystallization behavior of such steel. The contrast in grain structures of fully processed sheets of aluminum-killed and rimmed steel is illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2. The elongated grain structure of the aluminum-killed sheet is not developed on all heats or lots of this metal, and studies of the factors controlling and influencing its formation are reported in this paper. Jeffries and Archerb tate that unstrained grains are normally equiaxed, but exceptions are common. For example, if a metal containing a material mechanically obstructing grain growth is subjected to considerable working followed by thorough annealing, it may exhibit grains consistently elongated in the direction of working. Our experiments demonstrate that aluminum-killed, low carbon steel is such a metal, and that the substance mechanically obstructing grain growth is aluminum nitride. The effectiveness of aluminum nitride in inhibiting grain growth has been found to be influenced by the degree of cold reduction, the rate of heating in annealing, the thermal history of the sample before cold reduction, and the residual aluminum content. A correlation between grain shape and austenitic grain coarsening temperature also was indicated and additional experiments demonstrated that aluminum nitride is also the principal cause for the fine grain characteristic of aluminum-killed steels. Manufacture In conventional practice, aluminum-killed sheet steel is manufactured from a low carbon steel containing approximately 0.02 to 0.07 pct residual (HC1 soluble) Al. With the exception of certain samples containing greater or lesser amounts of aluminum, the steels used in these investigations were within the following composition range: C, 0.03 to 0.06 pct; Mn, 0.28 to 0.38; S, 0.017 to 0.032; Al, 0.03 to 0.06; P, <0.01; and Si, <0.01. Properly heated ingots are rolled to slabs about 4 in. thick. After surface conditioning, the slabs are reheated to about 2300°F and hot rolled continuouslv to strip about 1/10 in. thick. The strip rolling is completed at a temperature of 1550°F or higher, and the strip is coiled, usually at a temperature near the lower critical transformation. After cooling, the strip is pickled to remove oxide, cold reduced 40 to 70 pet to final thickness, then annealed to 1250° to 1350°F in 20 to 80 ton charges, the size of which results in slow heating and cooling rates. Effect of Cold Reduction According to Sachs and Van Horn,&apos; the deformations of the individual grains in rolling are similar to those of the total volume. Thus individual grains would elongate in rolling according to the amount of cold reduction imposed. This is true theoretically, but as cold reduction increases the individual grains tend to fragment, and measured grain elongations become less than theoretical. The amount of grain elongation may be described by a numerical rating based on grain counts made by the intercept method. Specimens are polished normal to the plane of the sheet, with the polished surface extending parallel to the rolling direction. After etching, grain intercepts are counted along a 50 mm line on a micrograph of suitable magnification. In random locations parallel to the plane of the sample 20 counts are made and 20 are made in the thickness direction of the sample the average count in the thickness direction divided by the average count parallel to the plane of the sample gives a numerical rating of the grain shape called grain elongation. For example, a grain elongation of 2.00 means that the average grain is twice as long as it is thick. The average of both counts may be converted to grains per sq mm by a nomograph relating intercept counts and grain count. By the same procedure the grain elongation in the plane of the sheet but transverse to the rolling direction may be determined, using transverse metallographic samples. THE PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS Toward the end of the 19th century, American industry began a drastic reorganization. The many, small, often-regional firms were supplanted by large national corporations-often produced by mergers among the existing firms. Giant companies appeared throughout American industry and many of them were engaged in the mineral industries.a The largest combines, by far, to emerge during the period were United States Steel and Standard Oil. Long before the restructuring had run its course, widespread concern arose over the process of concentration. Efforts were made to control, if not stop, the transformation. The concern produced the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 and the first of many federal regulatory agencies-the Interstate Commerce Commission (see Refs. 24, 31, 42). The basic objectives of these policies remain unclear to this day. The crucial issue is whether the goal is primarily to insure development of a more competitive economy or to preserve a social structure leaving more scope for small businesses. Complications arise from difficulties in agreeing upon the meaning of these terms. Studies of the early years of the antitrust movement suggest that it involved no particular concern over the mineral industries. Objections were directed at big companies in general. To be sure, the conservation movement arose in roughly the same period and did stress the evils of monopoly control of minerals. However, direct, continuing influence of conservation policy on antitrust is not apparent. Many of the most important antitrust cases, nevertheless, involved minerals. This, of course, may be sheer coincidence; the choice of cases has never followed any obvious pattern. Certainly, no simple hypothesis can explain the interest consistently. Once it may have been true that mineral industries were more likely than other sectors to be dominated by a few large companies. Yet, often sharp reversals of such tendencies -e.g., in oil and aluminum-have not removed antitrust interest. AMONG the industrial enterprises which have, from time to time, been undertaken in our Dominion, few have been more uniformly unsuccessful than those which have had for their object the develop ment of our mineral resources. These resources hare not been re garded as insignificant. On the contrary, it is supposed that we possess in our ore deposits something more than mere points of mineralogical interest. Some people are enthusiastic enough to be lieve that our mineral wealth will yet occasion the establishment in our backwoods of happy and industrious communities, causing, in fact, our wilderness to blossom as the rose. These enthusiasts do not shut their eyes to the serious obstacles which at every stage in terfere with the carrying out of mining enterprises in this country, and which tempt one to believe that no such enterprise can ever be conducted to a desirable end, but they entertain the conviction that as our capitalists, miners, and technologists reach the years of discretion, and handle our mines in an economical, vigorous, and judicious manner, and as our statesmen become alive to the necessity of fostering, without extremely protecting, our metallurgical indus tries, mines and furnaces will gradually prosper, and so develop as to become a tower of strength to our agricultural, manufacturing, and mercantile interests. The fact that our past experience does not generally justify such glowing anticipations makes one all the more anxious to put on record the history of a successful mine, such as the Silver Islet has, on the whole, been. My connection with its discovery and early development was a very intimate one, and I propose in this paper to sketch its history and character, and sum up the amount of silver it has so far yielded. An additional reason for the appearance of this paper is that the Transactions of the Institute contain only a few references to the Silver Islet Mine. Soft solders are used principally in the automotive, can-making, building construction and electrical industries, but their field of usefulness extends well beyond these principal users to a vast list of miscellaneous applications where metal joints are required. The most common soft solders and the only ones considered in this discussion are those composed of lead and tin, with or without various relatively small percentages of impurities or additions. A small amount of antimony is often purposely added. As an indication of the importance of these lead-tin solders, 8620 long tons of tin were consumed in 1934 in the United States for making new solder, and during most of 1935 from 900 to 1000 long tons often were used each month. In addition, many thousands of tons of secondary solder are recirculated annually. A great many factors influence the properties of joints made with soft solders. Fluxes and the fluxing procedure used to prepare the surfaces to be joined in order to give a true metal-to-metal contact are among the most important of these factors. The temperatures used, cleanliness of the work and general soldering technique have their effect, but when results are unsatisfactory they are usually attributed to the metallic solder itself and the raw materials from which it is made. Sometimes criticism of the solder is justified. The wrong composition may be chosen for a given job, impurities may be present that ruin certain desired qualities, or uniformity may be lacking. A solder may even be looked upon with suspicion because of its ancestry, regardless of its true composition and behavior. To clarify the effect of slight differences in composition as found in commercially refined solders, a comparison of properties of solders grouped according to their origin has been undertaken.
