The Negaunee mine is at the east end of the Marquette Range, in the city of Negaunee, on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore was first discovered on this property in 1883 by diamond drilling. A shaft was sunk soon afterward. and the mine has been worked continuously ever since. The total shipments from 1887 to Jan. I, 1945, were 20,417,587 long tons. The mine was taken over by the present operators, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., in 1903. During the past four years, 1941 to 1944 inclusive, the property has produced an average of nearly a million tons a year, and has employed more than 400 men. Geology The ore body at the Negaunee mine lies in a large syncline dipping about 15° to the west, the ore coming to ledge at the east end of the trough. The ore occurs in the Negaunee formation of the middle Huronian age, which consists of ferruginous cherts and slates through which intrusions of diorite have occurred. Although these intrusions of diorite have an important bearing on the formation of ore on the range, they are not important in this ore body. Some faulting has taken place along the diorite intrusions, or dikes as they are called locally, and also other faults are known to exist across the formation. These faults do not complicate either mining or development of the ore body. The footwall consists of jasper underlain with Siamo slate; the hanging wall is jasper and ferruginous chert. Fig. I shows a typical cross section of the ore body. The ore body is quite regular, about 120 ft. thick in the middle of the syncline and thinning out toward both sides of the fold. Its width ranges from 400 to 800 ft., the average being about 600 ft. The footwall is uniform in dip and strike, but irregular lenses of ore often extend 50 to 75 ft. up into the overlying jasper capping. Method of Mining Ore in the Negaunee mine has been mined by top slicing almost exclusively since 1903 This method of mining has been employed because it is especially adapted to the size and shape of the Negaunee ore body, and to the soft, sticky nature of the ore as well as the generally soft, broken jasper capping. Development The ore body has been developed from six different levels with intervals varying between loo and 125 ft. On the average, the dip causes a horizontal offset of 350 ft. per level, and under these circumstances it has been necessary to carry on considerable development in rock to make available the ore lying along the north and east footwalls. This is not as disadvantageous as might be supposed, because of reduced pressure and the accompanying saving in maintenance costs. The development of the

The mechanical properties and the phase-temperature relationships of magnesium-lithium-aluminum, magnesium-lithium-zinc, and magnesium-lithium-aluminum-zinc alloys are presented. It is shown that the strengths of some of these alloys can be tripled by heat treating and aging but that the high strength is accompanied by brittleness and lack of stability. MAGNESIUM-LITHIUM alloys are interesting because the hexagonal structure of magnesium can be changed into the more ductile and workable body-centered cubic structure by the addition of only 10 pct lithium.1 After Loonam2 determined that the ductility of the magnesium-lithium alloys is destroyed by even trace quantities of sodium, it was possible to prepare ductile alioys and study their mechanical properties. Jackson3 and coworkers have ably described their results with both the binary and polynary magnesium-lithium alloys. The present paper is a report of the mechanical properties of wrought magnesium-lithium-aluminurn, magnesium-lithium-zinc, and magnesium-lithium-aluminum-zinc alloys. Experimental Procedure The alloys were made by melting 7 lb of magnesium in a steel crucible under a molten flux of 75 pct LiCl + 25 pct LiF3 previously dried at 1600°F. The metal was heated to 1300°F for alloying aluminum and zinc and then cooled to 1250°F for adding lithium (sodium content: 0.01 to 0.04 pct). After the lithium had been alloyed, dry LiF powder was sprinkled on the melt to thicken the excess flux. After a 15 min holding period, the flux was skimmed off. Paraffin vapors were used to protect the metal as it was poured into 3 in. diam by 11 in. long magnesium molds. Billets were extruded into 3/8-in. diam rod and 1/16 x 3/4-in. strip; sheet was prepared from 1/8x 7/8-in. extruded strip, first by hot rolling and then by cold rolling 2 pct per pass. Hot rollability, or the temperature range through which the alloys could be rolled, was determined by rolling the strip two passes at 30 pct reduction per pass. Cold rollability, or the percentage of cold reduction to cause detrimental cracking, was determined on 0.064-in. hot-rolled sheet. Standard ASTM procedures were followed to obtain the mechanical properties, using 0.2 pct offset for the yield strengths. The level of properties produced with commercial magnesium alloys using the procedure described is given in a previous publication." Results Magnesium - Lithium - Aluminum System: The good workability of magnesium-lithium alloys is illustrated by the data in table I, which shows approximately how the extrusion pressure decreases as the amount of cubic phase increases. Probably no other type of equipment is now being introduced into American underground mines about which less is known and about which there is more misinformation than the Diesel mine locomotive. Any equipment installed underground brings with it hazards that were not present before, and it is the purpose of this paper to show that Diesel-powered equipment can be used with safety in underground mining if certain feasible but very important precautions are taken. Diesel locomotives are not new in underground mining, since they have been used successfully in European mines for at least 19 years, but their use in American mines is exceedingly limited; so far as is known, only five Diesel mine locomotives are operating at present in United States mines. Diesel locomotives were permitted underground in Great Britain for the first time in 1939, and the rapid increase in the number in use in those mines testifies to their safety and efficiency. More than 1300 Diesel mine locomotives are in use in European mines, according to the latest statistics; these locomotives are employed in coal, iron, lead-zinc and mercury mines. SO far as is known, the Diesel mine locomotive has not yet caused an explosion or mine fire, and has not been the cause of any fatalities from toxic gases in the mines in which it has been used. Adjustments of Diesel Engines foR Underground Use A Diesel engine adjusted to work in an underground mine should not be confused with the same engine adjusted for use outside the mine. Adjustment of the air:fuel ratio for engines that are used on the surface is intended to give the maximum fuel economy, and little or no attention is given to the chemical composition of the exhaust gas produced. Many such engines are poorly adjusted and perhaps poorly maintained, with the result that the engine emits smoke in quantity as well as the disagreeable odor familiarly associated with Diesel engines. The air:fuel ratio in the case of Diesel engines operated on the surface is generally around 15:1; that is, 15 lb of air to burn I lb of fuel. Diesel engines adjusted to work underground usually have an air:fuel ratio of about 20:1, as at this ratio the minimum quantity of toxic gases is given off in the engine exhaust. Diesel engines operated underground must be maintained in better condition than similar engines used on the surface; otherwise, the smoke emitted in the exhaust becomes objectionable if not unendurable. Practically normal air is required for safe operation of Diesel engines underground or in confined places; failure to provide virtually normal air for Diesel engine operation is almost certain to result in trouble. W. H. Somerton is to be commended for his application of the methods of dimensional analysis in combination with the results of laboratory drilling tests to obtain a significant formula for the rate of penetration for the process of rotary drilling. This formula is shown to be a consequence of a more general formulation developed by the discussor as a result of his investigations of the basic action of most methods of rock drilling by mechanical means—the momentary loading of a chisel-shaped tool on the surface of the rock at the bottom of the hole. Some of the author's conclusions are re-examined in the light of this general formulation. DRILLING RATE FORMULA The author selects a minimum number of the most significant variables associated with the rotary drilling process to set up his two dimensionless parameters. Only one variable is associated with the geometry of the bit —the bit diameter, D; only one variable is associated with the properties of the rock pertinent to drilling— the drilling strength, S; and only two independent variables are associated with the conditions of operation the weight on the bit. F, and the rate of rotation, N. The dependent variahle of interest is, of course, the rate of penetration, R. The results of the author's drilling tests show that the variable R that appears in the dimensionless parameter, RIND is approximately proportioned to the square of the variable, F, that appears in the other dimension-less parameter, F/D2S. This establishes the functional relationship between these two simple parameters that leads to the formulation of a third dimensionless parameter, RD1T2/NF1. This last parameter is a significant one for the rotary drilling process, in general, although the author properly limits the validity of his equations to his present test conditions. The author realizes that the numerical value of this parameter, C, is not a constant but may be a function of one or more additional dimensionless groupings of the many other variables associated with the rotary drilling process, e.g. some dimensionless measure of bit wear. The author's parameter is shown to be a special case of a more general dimensionless parameter, developed by the discussor. that is applicable to practically all methods of rock drilling by mechanical means, namely. RD2S/P. P is the rate at which mechanical work is done on the rock, and S is the drilling strength, a term originated by the discussor. This paper compares the general characteristics of Florida phosphate rock for the manufacture of fertilizers and phosphoric acid. The subjects covered are relative reactivity for superphosphate manufacture and various properties of the rock for use in phosphoric acid production, including gypsum filterability, sulfuric acid consumption, foaming, relative cor-rosiveness, chemical composition, and others. Comprison will include rocks of North Africa, the western U.S., and other locations. This paper reviews some of the important properties of phosphate rock, giving particular attention to a comparison of Florida phosphate with some of the major phosphates produced in the world. It also discusses some of the techniques available for evaluatine Phosphate. rock for phosphoric. acid and fertilizer use. The use of Florida rock outside the U.S. has been increasing steadily, evidence in itself of certain desirable properties of this rock. Table I is a list of the major producers and exporters of phosphate rock as of 1965. Florida, meaning in this case Central Florida, was the largest producer of phosphate rock and the largest exporter of rock. Of a total world production estimated at 60 million tons, about 50 million tons were produced during 1965 by the areas listed in Table I. One major producing area omitted from Table I and from subsequent evaluations in this paper comprises Nauru, Ocean, and Christmas Islands, whose output totaled about three million tons in 1965. This phosphate is marketed entirely by the British Phosphate Commissioners, primarily in Australia and New Zealand, and does not get into the world market elsewhere to a significant degree at the present time. South Africa, Egypt, Israel, and North Vietnam also produce lesser quantities of rock for the international market, and these materials are also excluded from this review. The phosphate industry is now seeing the introduction of several new areas that will be significant factors in the rock market in the future. The North Carolina and North Florida areas each have capacity at present or in the near future for producing about three million tons per year. The Djebel Onk mine in Algeria has a potential of about 800,000 tons per year. In addition, announcements have been made of significant development of deposits in Peru and in the Spanish Sahara, and sizable expansions are planned in several of the existing areas that are now of minor importance. Competition for the rock market appears to be increasing so that more attention will probably be paid to evaluating phosphates available from different areas. It is not possible here to go into all the properties of even a few of the materials listed in Table I. However, it is practical to discuss some comparative properties important for making phosphoric acid and fertilizers, and to touch on the techniques used for the evaluation of various phosphate rocks. Table II gives typical analyses of the major phosphate rocks available in the world as of 1965. There is, of course, an inherent danger in labeling any analysis as typical, but it appears that variations between two samples of rock within one given area are generally less than between two samples from different areas. The analyses listed were compiled from several years of data so they may not be representative of the present output of any particular area. After nine years of continuous operation it is a good idea to take stock of the geological concepts that guide the working of a mine. This is a welcome opportunity to discuss the Lovitt gold mine, which has been a challenge in both the geological and operational fields. The occurrence belongs to the extensive group of epithermal gold-silver deposits once worked so vigorously in the western states, Hungary, and New Zealand and still producing in Central America and the Philippines. These deposits are characterized by a relatively shallow vertical range up to 2000 ft, and often much less, and by bonanza orebodies of even more limited range. The area in which they occur is frequently widespread, so that exploration must be directed along and across the strike of known favorable structures in search of repetitions.

THE great improvements which have been made in late years in the different systems and instruments used to perforate the crust of the earth for purposes of testing and exploring for mineral resources or for other reasons, by means of bore-holes of greater or less diameter and to greater or less depths, are manifold. It may therefore be of interest to make an impartial comparison of them, or of such as are most commonly used. Being well aware of the difficulties which are encountered in such a task, a reasonable allowance must be made in such a comparison. It is a rare instance when even two decidedly different systems or instruments have been used in the same locality, penetrating identically the same strata to the same depth. The diameter of a borehole as well as its greater or less depth must also be considered in regard to its cost per foot, etc. But for practical purposes, for ex¬ploration at least, we may assert this rule Any borehole, of whatever diameter, which allows the means of examining the strata most carefully and completely, will be sufficient for this purpose, but that one which will do it most economically and in the least space of time, must be considered the best for it. It will, therefore, partially depend upon circumstances, what system, in spite of other superiorities, may be the best in each case, and the following remarks may aid in deciding this question. To make the attempt here to review all that has been published upon the different systems and means of boring would be out of place. Reference can be had to the able publications treating upon this subject. A difference in this respect exists in regard to the use of the hollow rods in connection with the diamond drill, used for that purpose. The great future, which appears to be evident for this instrument, will be warrant enough for any one, who has had the opportunity to test it, to give his experience to the public. The heats of formation at 273°K of the compounds Mg2Ge, Mg2sn, and Mg2b, the heats of fusion and melting points of Mg2Sn and Mg2Pb, and the heats of solution of magnesium, germanium, and lead in liquid tin have been measured. The excess free energies of the liquid alloys and the free energies of formation of magnesium-Group IVB compounds at their melting points and their standard free energies of formation at 298°K have been calculated. The stability and bonding of the compounds are discussed with reference to these properties. Some thermodynatnic aspects of the liquid phases in the systems Mg-Sn and Mg-Pb are also considered. THE compounds of magnesium with the Group TVB elements, silicon, germanium, tin, and lead, have often been considered to constitute a nearly ideal homologous series. In particular, their thermodynamic stability has been assumed to decrease with increasing atomic number of the Group IVB element.' The binary-phase diagrams of the magnesium-Group IVB elements given by Hansen and Anderko2 have the same form. Each system has a single con-gruently melting compound of limited homogeneity range. The structures of these compounds, which have the formula Mg2X, are anti-isomorphous with the calcium fluoride structure. A recent investigation has found evidence of a second compound in the system Mg-Pb.3 The solid compounds Mg2Si, Mg2Ge, and Mg,Sn are semiconductors, while the conductivity of Mg2Pb approaches that of a metallic conductor. This difference suggests that other properties may also show a discontinuity. The investigation reported here is concerned with the thermodynamic properties of magnesium-IVB compounds and particularly their variations with the period of the Group IVB element. The heats of formation at 273°K of the compounds MgzGe, Mg2Sn, and Mg2Pb and the heats of fusion and melting points of Mg2Sn and Mg2Pb have been measured. The results, combined with published data, are interpreted in relation to the stability and the bonding characteristics of the compounds. Some thermodynamic aspects of the liquid phases in the systems Mg-Sn and Mg-Pb are also considered. In the course of the investigation the heats of solution of magnesium, germanium, and lead in liquid tin have been determined. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Samples. Samples of the compounds Mg2Ge, Mg2Sn, and Mg2Pb, supplied by Professor P. Aigrain, Compagnie Générale de Télégraphie Sans Fils, were used in measuring heats of formation, heats of fusion, and melting points. Samples of Mg2Sn and Mg2Pb, supplied by Dr. V. B. Kurfman, Dow Metal Products Co., samples of Mg2Sn, prepared at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, and samples of MgzPb, prepared in this laboratory, were used for additional measurements of the heats of fusion and the melting points. The samples were stored in evacuated Pyrex capsules or under nonreacting liquids. 1.2) Heats of Formation. The heats of formation at 273°Kof the compounds Mg2Ge, Mg2Sn, and Mg,Pb were measured by tin-solution calorimetry. In this method, samples of the compound and of a mixture of the constituent elements are added alternately from 0°C to a tin-rich bath. The difference between the heat effects, corrected for the change in composition of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound. Details of the method have been given elsewhere. 4 The bath was maintained at 350°C for the dissolution of the compounds MgzSn and Mg2Pb. Since at this temperature the dissolution of Mg2Ge was too slow, a bath temperature of 400" or 450°C was used with this compound. At least three calorimetric runs, each of approximately six additions, were made with each compound. 1.3) Heats of Solution. The determination of the heats of solution of magnesium, germanium, and lead in tin was included in this investigation because they were not well-established at the time this work was started. RUM Jungle uranium field lies in the subtropical portion of the Northern Territory on the Finniss River, East Branch. It takes its name from a railway siding about 2 ½ miles to the southwest and 52 miles from Darwin. The field can be reached from Darwin by a bituminized road. Monsoonal rains of the wet season, October to April, provide an annual rainfall of about 60 in. Vegetation is of the open forest type with denser tree growth along the watercourses and scattered throughout the area are isolated dense patches of jungle growth which are always found on ironstone cappings overlying limestones. The name, Rum Jungle, is thought to have been derived from this unusual occurrence of jungle growth. The wet season prevents the movement of motor vehicles and personnel. It is not until March, when the grass which ranges up to 15 ft in height is burned and the alluvial flats dry out, that field work can be undertaken.

In natural gas storage operations, seasonal pressure fluctuations in the gas reservoir cause the water from the surrounding aquifer to flow into and out of the gas sand. The theory of unsteady-state liquid flow through porous media developed by Van Everdingen and Hurst' has been applied to predict the water movement into and out of the gar bubble for .several .postulated pressure cycles. Those cycles with as many pound-days above the original aquifer pressure as pound-days below, may cause the gas reservoir to slowly grow or shrink rather than hold to a constant volume. Applications to an actual field case study give the predicted gas reservoir monthly pressures and volumes as compared with the observed monthly pressures and volumes. INTRODUCTION A large number of natural gas storage reservoirs are bounded by or adjacent to large water-saturated formations called aquifers. The presence of these aquifers is usually evidenced by the production of water from wells delineating the gas-hearing sands. Some gas storage reservoirs in use today have been purposely developed on aquifers. Cyclic pressure variations in a gas storage reservoir cause water influx and efflux from the surrounding aquifer. This, in turn, results in a varying gas reservoir volume. The prediction of the effect of this aquifer fluid movement on the size and size variation of the gas reservoir can provide information valuable in the study of several reservoir engineering problems. The economics of gas storage operations are directly influenced by the influx of aquifer fluid into the reservoir since a shrinking storage reservoir requires increasing pressures for the storage of the same quantity of gas. Material balance and reserve or recovery calculations also obviously require knowledge of reservoir volume. Various other reservoir engineering calculations such as interpretation of well interference data, evaluation of physical characteristics of porous media, water coning, gas injection and pressure maintenance studies are typical problems where variations of volume due to edge or bottom-water encroachment becomes important. The solution of equations describing influx and efflux of water in the gas sand, application to gas storage reservoir behavior and interpretation of results are the main objectives of this paper. While this work was directed toward gas storage reservoirs, it applies equally well to repressuring of partially depleted oil reservoirs with an active water drive. MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS As just mentioned, the cyclic pressure variations in an aquifer-surrounded gas storage reservoir cause water movement and varying gas reservoir volume. Prediction of this volume variation from the reservoir pressure cycles or the injection-production schedule requires adoption of a flow model, certain assumptions concerning reservoir and fluid properties, and formulation and solution of the governing differential equation. The flow model used in this study is a gas bubble located on a very large aquifer (Fig. la). Gas bubble radius and aquifer sand thickness are denoted by rr and h, respectively. Fig. lb shows the horizontal, radial two-dimensional porous reservoir attended by the unsteady, compressible motion of the aquifer liquid. THE Employment Bureau of the F. A: E. S., conducted under- the direct supervision of the secretaries of the four Founder Societies, has wanted to extend its activities and usefulness but it is operating right up to the limit of its budget; consequently, anything which requires the expenditure of more funds cannot be -undertaken, for the present. A great deal of time has been spent in recording, classifying, and interviewing the men listed, but owing to the business depression, only a comparatively small number of men have been placed' luring the last few months. There are men in New York from all over the country. What the Bureau needs is more positions available. With this in view, a number of high-grade engineers, themselves in need of employment, volunteered their services for a publicity campaign in the City of New York. A definite mode of procedure was evolved, and the success of the movement has been considerable, so much so that it has been thought well to call it to the attention, of members elsewhere, so that similar committees ' and campaigns might be organized in other cities. Following is a chronological arrangement of the methods used.

Solubilities and densities are reported for alumina hydrates in NaOH solutions under the conditions of the Bayer process employed to purify alumina for aluminum production. The equilibrium constants for reactions to form A102- accurately correlate the effects of NaOH concentration on the solubilities; the temperature coefficients of the equilibria lead to heats of solution of 7.34, 4.76, and 5.24 kcal for the a trihydrate, a monohydrate, and ß trihydrate, respectively. Moderate calcination does not change the solubility of the a trihydrate but increases that of the a monohydrate. At solution temperatures above 100°C, the trihydrates transform rapidly to a monohydrate. Hydro-thermally produced a monohydrate is the stable phase above 20°C. CORNERSTONE of the aluminum industry, the Bayer process for alumina production is based on the difference in solubility of hydrated alumina in NaOH solutions between 170" and 40°C. Solubilities and densities in this system were determined thirty years ago by M. Tosterudl under the direction of J. D. Edwards and C. S. Taylor. The solubility data, which still appear more concordant than those in the literature, are employed to sort out the complex equilibria in this system. The nomenclature for the alumina hydrates is that presented in The Aluminum Industry' and more recently summarized in Alumina Properties.3 a trihydrate is the purified phase analogous to gibbsite, a monohydrate is similarly akin to boehmite, and ß trihydrate is sometimes known as bayerite. Literature Goudriaan4 reviewed the early literature on alumina in NaOH solutions and presented data on the solubility at 30°C of several forms. The gel precipitated from aluminum sulphate or chloride with ammonia and dried at 130" to 140°C had the highest solubility but was unstable, its solubility being cut to one-tenth on standing in NaOH. The solubility of the gel was decreased one-third on calcination at 300" to 400°C, while that of the gel transformed in NaOH at room temperature to a crystalline trihydrate was unchanged on calcination. The preparation produced by slow hydrolysis of sodium aluminate solution with CO, in the air gave solubilities in rough agreement with later values for a trihydrate. The solubility of this form was increased slightly by the calcination. Fricke and Jucaitis5 extended the work to 30" and 60°C with a trihydrate. They also gave solubilities for ß trihydrate (bayerite b), although the residue belonging to the left branch of the solubility curve corresponded to a trihydrate. The residues at high NaOH concentrations were mono and trisodium aluminates, the latter being 3Na2O . AL2O3 • 6H2O. Solubilities of a trihydrate at 95°C and of a monohydrate at 150" and 200 °C come from the work of Magarchak.6 a trihydrate transformed to a monohydrate above 95°C. A few measurements on the solubility at 25°C of an alumina trihydrate prepared by slow hydrolysis of NaAIO, solutions were presented by Sprauer and pearce.? Their analyses showed the monosodium aluminate to have the composition Na2O.Al2O3-2.5H2O.

In 1846 a bill was pending in Congress to reduce, or eliminate, the tariff on coal; the debate caused the same writer to visit the mines on the north side of the James River and to write a letter about them to the same paper.' Omitting the political arguments, his account follows: "July 13, 1846. "Early in the morning we rose, washed, combed, and ate a first-rate breakfast, and then went to the Tuckahoe, mined by Messrs. Sneed and Dietrock. Coal was first discovered here sixty years ago, and mined by Colonel Thomas Randolph, the proprietor of the land. They were worked by him for his smith-shops. Since which time they have been worked periodically, up to the war of 1812, when they were abandoned; and recommenced in 1837 under the management of Dr. W. T.- Scott. Subsequently a Company was formed called Tuckahoe Coal Mining Company, which purchased the whole track at a cost of $30,000. They commenced the sinking of a shaft and went as far as 412 feet, and then pitched the fat all into the fire by hauling off altogether in despair. In 1843 Major Sneed went to work at it, and succeeded. I may here remark that Major Sneed has been the pioneer in this business on the North side of the River, and has sunk more shafts than any other man who has pursued this vocation in Eastern Virginia. The difficulties and expense in sinking these shafts are sometimes immense. The coal on the outcrop or surface is not always a guide to where it may be found imbedded many hundred feet under earth and rock. "The Tuckahoe Pits are on the Eastern end of the coal field, within twelve hundred yards of the Canal, and about twelve miles from Richmond. They employ fifty hands and raise some three hundred thousand bushels of coal per year. It is highly bituminous and excellent for the manufacture of iron. The Tredegar and Belle Isle Rolling Mills are supplied with it. It must be good and of the right kind', or they would not use it. These pits are the only. ones on this side troubled-with gas-of course ventillation is necessary. There is not as much water in this Pit as I have found generally in many others, although they have extended their operations to a considerable distance under ground. I have observed in examining the coal mines, that, where they are sunk over four or five hundred feet, they are annoyed by gas, and where there is a less depth they are troubled with water. It is evident, therefore, that water, in the region of these coal fields, does not run through the earth to any extent, even five hundred feet deep, and the farther you go below that the greater the increase of gas. "We next visited William Cottrell's Pits, situated one mile and a half north of this. He employs some thirty hands, and raises from 4 to 500 bushels per day. "T. & R. Factorial design is a mathematical method of drawing valid conclusions from a series of tests made in a predetermined pattern. It is applied to flotation ore testing using, in this case, five variables, each varied twice, requiring a total of 32 tests. Representative conclusions are checked by repeat testing. THE factorial design method of testing is particu-J- larly applicable to mill-scale plant tests because 1—the conclusions take into consideration all variabilities of the plant, 2—there are no subjective guesses as to the conclusions, 3—the number of tests necessary to check large numbers of variables are at a minimum, and 4—interactions between variables can be discerned. It is equally applicable to laboratory testing because once the variables to be investigated have been decided upon, as well as the number of levels for each variable, a well-trained assistant can run the tests, since the test work follows a predetermined mathematical pattern, leaving the conclusions to be found by the person in charge. The conclusion takes into consideration all errors of the tests. To illustrate the use of factorial design, a sample of copper porphyry ore was tested, the copper content of the batches not being uniform. Five variables were investigated, each at two levels, requiring only 32 tests. After suitable arithmetical analysis, conclusions for copper recovery and concentrate grade are arrived at. Four cases of these conclusions are checked by repeat testing. Testing Methods Reproducibility of flotation tests varies widely, depending on the experimenter, the process, the equipment, and probably a host of unknown and perhaps interacting variables. If the reproducibility of tests is good, let us say to 0.2 pct recovery of a certain metal, and the minimum difference between tests upon the variation of the interested variables is, say 1 pct, then simple averaging and inspection is ample in interpreting results. However, often such a happy situation is not the case. This is particularly true in mill-scale operations where the ores are variable, and a host of minor operating fluctuations common to most milling, and familiar to all mill operators, is the normal state of affairs. Yet, mill scale tests are run, the results averaged, and conclusions drawn therefrom. The trustworthiness of such results should be measured by comparison to the experimental error—the measure of the degree of reproducibility of the results. This comparison is a test of significance. Thus, if daily results of recoveries average 80.0 pct, and a spread of 78.0 pct to 82.0 pct, is recorded, then, clearly, on changing mill operations, an 81 pct recovery cannot be construed as significant by using averages, since it is well within the previous test limits. By using rigorous statistical tests of significance, conclusions arrived at by inspection or simple averaging may be shown to be based on inadequate evidence or even wrong. I. The Mines THE first discovery of zinc on the property now worked by this company was made by the celebrated mineralogist, Prof. William Theodore Röpper, in 1845. Different claimants kept the property in continual litigation till 1861, when everything was satisfactorily settled by the purchase of the land by the company, who have worked it ever since. The mines are situated in a valley, four miles south of Bethlehem, Pa., in Lehigh County. The valley is from two to three miles broad, and is bounded on the north and south by syenitic hills. Syenite underlies the valley, and upon this is deposited the Potsdam sandstone, then a layer of slate, and, finally, a dolomitic limestone, belonging to the Chazy or Black River formation, in which the zinc deposits are inclosed. The rocks occur in folds, and have evidently been subjected to tremendous pressure from below, the zinc deposit being found in an anticlinal axis, in nearly vertical veins. Until now, no attempt has been made to familiarize each group with the other's practice and limitations. This paper is an effort to acquaint the readers with some of the factors pertaining to the problem and cost of mining and preparing steam coal, and also to the economics of producing steam with such coal. In recent years all lines of endeavor have turned to intensive mechanization in order to lower the unit cost of production. The average fuel consumption in steam electric generating stations has dropped in 20 years from 4.0 lb. to 1.4 lb. per kilowatt-hour; while the modern power station can generate 1 kw-hr. on a fraction under 1 lb., or 13,000 B.t.u. coal. Also, the amount produced per man has in that same period risen from 3.8 to 8.2 tons, owing to the use of modernized equipment below ground for coal cutting, drilling, shooting, loading, hauling and hoisting. Unfortunately, the rapid speed of 5 tons per minute of operation at which the coal is loaded mechanically precludes any appreciable removal of impurities at the coal face, so that the raw coal is hoisted containing a markedly higher percentage of impurities than the hand-loaded coal, which was subjected to the scrutiny of the miner during loading. Also, during the past 20 years, certain seams of coal lying close to the surface have been made economically available by the improved design of electrically operated shovels and draglines for the removal of overburden running as high as 56 ft. This strip coal frequently contains so much ash in the raw state (Table 1) that it would have no sales value. Therefore, coal preparation must be adopted to beneficiate the raw product. Some seams in the United States have a decreasing ash content with decreasing size, owing, in all probability, to the fact that the coal is friable while the impurities are hard, causing a concentration of the low-ash material in the fine sizes. Illinois No. 6 coal being rather hard, naturally the reverse is true.

Strip mining in the domestic coal industry is contributing a greater proportion bf overall production than at any time in the past. U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics show that the percentage of total production mined in 1958 by stripping methods increased to more than 30 pct, up from 22 pct in 1951. The tendency to favor strip and open pit mining exists in other mining activities, but such trends are not as clearly outlined as in the coal industry. Significantly, the depth of overburden in coal properties considered suitable for stripping is also increasing. A depth of 50 to 60 ft of overburden was once considered to be about the maximum amount that could be handled economically. Today, a depth of 80 to 100 ft is frequently taken into consideration for simple overcasting operations (i.e., excavating overburden and dumping it in the spoil position where it remains indefinitely).

THE history, development, subsurface geology, production, economics and estimated reserves are discussed in this paper. The Magnolia structure is an anticline with a known maximum structural relief at 372 ft., and the areal extent of the producing acreage is 4494 acres. Production is obtained from the Smackover oölitic lime and 116 successful wells have been drilled. The field, which was developed on 4o-acre spacing, has been under strict control. It is believed to be producing with a strong water drive. To date it has produced more than eighteen million barrels and the estimate of ultimate recovery is 220 million barrels. EARLY HISTORY The Magnolia field is in Columbia County, Arkansas, T. 17 S., R. 19 and 20 W. Various geologists had long been interested in this general area, and as early as 1921, John F. Magale was able to define a surface structure. The first wildcat, one of the first in Columbia County, was drilled in 1923 by Mid-States Oil Co., in sec. 10, T. 17 S., R. 20 W. This well was about 1 ½ miles northwest of the Kerlyn Oil Company's discovery well and was based on surface geological work done by jewel and Dobie. Subsequently, several shallow wells that were not carried below the Upper Cretaceous beds were drilled in the immediate area of the discovery well, but none of them contained any commercial showings of oil or gas. In the latter part of 1935, Elam and Magale (or Southwood) Garrett No. I was located in sec. 13, T. 17 S., R. 20 W., ¾ mile east of the discovery well. It was drilled to a total depth of 4018 ft. in the lowermost Glen Rose beds but failed to obtain any showings of oil or gas. Interest had been stimulated in this general area, however, by the discovery of several oil fields, mainly Glen Rose oil production in the Rodessa field in Louisiana in 1935, Smackover lime production in Snow Hill in May 1936, production from the Cotton Valley formation in Schuler in 1037, and Smackover lime production from the Buckner field in November 1937. With this background and subsequent seismic work, which was carried on partly because the old shallow wells drilled in the township had shown evidence of closure in the Upper Cretaceous beds, the discovery well, Kerlyn Oil Company's Barnett No. I, sec. 14, T. 17 S., R. 20 W., was originally projected to a total depth of 6300 ft., to test the equivalents of the Morgan sands of the Cotton Valley series, then producing at Schuler. The well was carried to a total depth of 6325 ft. and tested the objective beds without finding commercial production. In the meantime, however, one well had found production in the Jones sand and another in the Smackover lime at Schuler. Kerlyn immediately made arrangements to deepen the Barnett well to the Smackover lime. The top of the Smackover lime was encountered at 7618 ft. and the well was cored and drilled to a depth of 7740 ft.

This work presents the development and application of equations of the form developed by Martin1 to describe gravity segregation performance during natural depletion. One-dimensional depletion analyses are applied to several hypothetical reservoirs. Considerable attention is given to the changes in saturation distribution in the dip direction resulting from depletion at various rates. Vertical gas saturation distribution within a sand having vertical permeability is studied to illustrate conditions which provide For low gus-oil ratio production from wells selectively completed away from sand tops, as observed from well performance. Results of performance calculations are shown graphically and illustrate the rate sensitivity of the gravity segregation mechanism and the influence of reservoir geometry and withdrawal distribution. It is shown that for sufficiently high depletion rates gas saturation distribution in the dip direction is characterized by the formation of two discontinuities, or saturation "fronts"; the updip front being the gas-oil contact of the secondary gas cap and the downdip front occurring at a position dependent upon the reservoir depletion rate, withdrawal distribution and reservoir geometry. The gas saturation in the region between fronts is shown to continually increase with time, while that downdip from the lower front remains very low and relatively stable. The effect of increased depletion rate is to reduce the region of stable gas saturation and thus enlarge the portion of the reservoir producing with continually increasing gas saturation. Special attention is given to the performance of reservoirs having sufficient vertical permeability to permit liberated gas to segregate vertically within the sand section before proceeding in the updip direction. It is shown that reservoirs of this type are far less sensitive to depletion rate due to the mechanical control of producing gas-oil ratios afforded by selective well completions away from sand tops. It is shown that gravity segregation performance is adversely af- fected by decreasing reservoir cross-section area in the updip direction. It is also shown that down-dip withdrawal concentrations can restrict gas segregation rates in the dip direction. INTRODUCTION The natural depletion performance of several large producing reservoirs in Western Venezuela has unmistakably shown the significant role that gravity forces play in governing the gas-oil ratio behavior of individual wells and the over - all pressure-production performance of the reservoirs. Analysis and prediction of the natural depletion performance of these reservoirs is of great importance in determining the economics of pressure maintenance operations. In 1957, a method for the analysis of pressure maintenance performance was presented by Martin1 which, in the original and more general form of the equations involved, provides a physically sound basis for the analysis of one-dimensional gravity segregation performance during natural depletion. The work reported herein is an application and extension of Martin's outstanding developments to a series of hypothetical reservoirs in an attempt to explain the general behavior of the gravity segregation mechanism and the influence of such parameters as depletion rate, reservoir geometry and withdrawal distribution. The study considers two types of flow: "distributed flow", where vertical permeability in the reservoir is zero and fluids flow only in the dip direction while uniformly distributed over the sand thickness; and "segregated flow", where vertical permeability is sufficient to permit gas to segregate against the sand top before proceeding updip. This latter type of flow has been recognized as an important mechanism active in the massive sand reservoirs of Western Venezuela.
