The Grossmann principle1 for the calculation of hardenability of steel from composition is attractive because of its simplicity. It postulates that the hardenability of a steel for any particular grain size may be expressed in terms of an ideal critical diameter, which is the product of an ideal critical diameter for a "pure" iron-carbon base multiplied by a succession of factors for each element of composition contained, including the incidentals. It infers that the multiplying factor for a given quantity of an element is constant for all combinations of composition. Gross-mann has stated that in the great majority of cases the experimental values of hardenability are found to be well within 10 per cent of the calculated values. The validity of the scheme has been confirmed in principle by Crafts and Lamont2,3 and by Kramer et al.4 Their results differ from the original in the magnitude of the effect of some elements but, since they accepted the product concept and followed its direction, it is to be ex~ected that similar results would be obtained. Crafts and Lamont, in their second Paper, recognized that the factor relations for manganese and nickel were not continuously linear, but beyond certain critical amounts increase sharply. Austin, Van Note and Prater6 demonstrated nonlinear relations between hardenability and alloy contents. Their curves for chromium, silicon, manganese and nickel were all convex upward to show decreasing incremental effects. They concluded that Grossmann's factors under-evaluate the hardening effect of low percentage additions of these elements, and overevaluate the larger additions. More recently W. Stevens has found that the factor method fails when applied to complex steels containing two or three principal alloying elements other than carbon. Multiplying factors derived from his results bear a complex relation to composition and are not constant for a given amount of an element as the base composition varies. C. A. Liedholm7 found that, using either the Grossmann or the Crafts-Lamont multiplying factor values, not only were the relative hardenabilities of two heats of S.A.E. 6130 chromium-vanadium steel

INTRODUCTION THE flotation process for the concentration of ores is a method by means of which one or more of the minerals in the ore (usually the valuable ones) are picked up by means of a liquid film and floated at the surface of .a mass of fluid pulp. Here they are separated from the other minerals, which remain immersed in the body of the pulp. In general, the minerals which are floated are sulphides of metallic luster, but some other minerals of metallic luster such as graphite and some sulphides with adamantine luster, such as sphalerite and cinnabar, are amenable to treatment by the process. The importance of flotation lie's in the fact that it is primarily a "slimes process" by means of which the particles of valuable mineral, too fine for efficient gravity concentration, are saved with a high percentage of recovery. Recoveries in the mills treating low-grade copper sulphide ores have been advanced 10 to 20 per cent. by the installation of the process and similar increased savings have been accomplished by the same means in mills treating sulphide ores of zinc and lead. When finely ground ore containing sulphides mixed with a siliceous or earthy gangue is brought gently onto the surface of a body of water, in a direction forming an acute angle with the surface of the water, a considerable portion of the sulphide constituent of the ore floats on the surface of the liquid, while the gangue sinks. This is the so-called film flotation, exemplified by the Wood and Macquisten processes. When gas bubbles are introduced into a fluid pulp composed of finely ground ore and water, to which has been added (1) a small amount of certain oils, or (2) a small amount of certain acids or acid salts, or (3) a small amount of certain alkalis or alkaline salts, or (4) a small amount of a mixture of oil with acid or alkali, the sulphide particles in the ore are brought to the surface on the gas bubbles. INFORMATION regarding the use of manganese alloys has hitherto been incomplete and available only from widely scattered sources. This paper attempts a systematic description of properties .and uses of alloys other than manganese bronze, manganin and duralumin, which are probably the only non-ferrous alloys associated with manganese in the minds of most metallurgists.1 PROPERTIES OF MANGANESE Manganese can react either acid or basic; it is hard to obtain in the pure state; it has two different crystalline lattice structures, both of the cubic system, one stable above 850° C. and the other below 650° C., both coexisting in the intermediate range. Although the commercial product is hard and brittle, the pure metal seems to be ductile. In fact Zhemchuzhny, in Russia, was able to obtain ductile manganese and draw it to fine wires by the simple expedient of adding about 3 per cent. copper to the alumino-thermic product. Copper most probably brings the silicides, aluminides, nitrides and carbides present in the commercial product into a much less harmful form of distribution. One industrial use that can be foreseen for wrought manganese articles is as anodes for electrolytic processes in sulfate and nitrate solutions, particularly with high voltages. A practically insoluble skin of manganese peroxide is likely to form in such cases and an insoluble and strong anode material will be available.

Chromium diffusion coatings on commercial Armco iron lead to carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries in and below the coatings. High compressive stresses are introduced into the coating and, as a result, tensile stresses are introduced into the base material below the coating. In coated samples, fatigue cracks form at the grain boundaries below the coating after only a limited portion of the total lifetime (5 to 10 pct). Residual tensile stresses and a stress concentration caused by precipitated carbides seems to be responsible for early crack nucleation. Stage I of Propagation may be divided into two substages: I-a in which the crack Propagates along grain boundaries, and I-b in which the crack propagates along slip boundaries according to a shear mode. In uncoated samples, the cracks form at slip bands after 40 to 50 pct of the total lifetime. In coated samples the Propagation process takes longer than in uncoated samples because of the moderate rate of crack extension until the crack breaks through the coating. The chromium-diffusion coating causes little if any increase in fatigue life. CHROMIUM diffusion is one of the most popular processes used to apply coatings to iron alloys. This popularity stems from the fact that the diffusion treatment is comparatively easy to carry out, and it improves certain surface properties such as corrosion and wear resistance as well as some other properties. Very little effort has been devoted to the investigation of the effect of chromium-diffusion coatings on mechanical properties and particularly on fatigue properties. Since the chromium coating usually represents a small fraction of the total volume of the base material it is generally assumed that the macro properties are dependent principally on the base material rather than the coating. Insofar as fatigue is concerned, there are indications that the fatigue life of the chromium coating is not less than that of the basic material and the fatigue properties are generally not reduced by it.' But chromium diffusion causes drastic structural and chemical changes in the region of the material surface2-4 which introduce additional residual stresses. Such changes must affect fatigue crack nucleation and may sometimes affect the initial stages of propagation. Furthermore, it is conceivable that the secondary stages of the crack propagation could be influenced by some irreversible structural changes in the core of the material, which stem from the long-time heat treatment at high temperatures required to apply the coating. This paper analyses the structural and compositional changes produced in commercial Armco iron by a chromium-diffusion coating and the effect of the coating on fatigue crack initiation and propagation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The investigations were carried out with commercial Armco iron. The chemical composition of the iron, the number of specimens tested, the grain size produced during chromizing and heat treating, and the thickness and microhardness of the chromized layers are shown in Table I. Samples were chromized by a gas diffusion process. The temperature and time of the diffusion coating process were chosen according to a previous grain growth study. It had been found that at a temperature of 970°C and a holding time of between 3 and 9 hr there are practically no changes in grain size. To describe the grain size more accurately the ASTM method5 was supplemented by a statistical analysis of the mean volume diameter as outlined by Fullman6 and The The mean volume diameter was deter- mined from D = p/2m where D is the mean volume diameter, and m is the mean reciprocal value of grain diameters as seen on the micrograph. The shape and the size of the asymmetrical sample, see Fig. 1, were chosen so as to facilitate the study of fatigue crack initiation. Before coating, the samples were machined and the surface of the groove was polished. After chromizing, the two side surfaces were machined and polished so as to retain the coating only on the top surface of the groove. Residual stress in the chromized layer was measured on the top of the grooved section of the specimen after the diffusion process. The inclined incident X-ray beam procedure was used.9'10 The computations were performed with the initial assumption of a zero surface normal stress component. In the management of oil properties, it is always desirable to know the future behavior of oil wells and oil reservoirs. Some estimation of the quantity of oil and gas that will be produced must be made as a basis for decisions on possible returns on investments in lifting equipment, drilling of additional wells, and other operating expenditures. In new or wildcat areas, operating expenditures are considered highly speculative, but in the completion of partly drilled and the operation of producing fields it is good business to remove as much speculation as possible. An accurate knowledge of oil and gas reserves in such cases would solve many management problems. The term "oil reserves" usually signifies the future ultimate recovery without specifying the method of production. Thus with changing methods and innovations in the production industry, reserves of any definite reservoir may be increased by increasing the portion of oil recovered. The usual reserve estimates are made by comparisons of well and formation characteristics, by using a percentage recovery on the oil content of the formation volume using porosity data, by extending production curves on non-prorated wells, or by extending bottom-hole pressure-production curves. The most reliable method would appear to be one that would estimate the initial quantity of oil and gas present and then obtain percentage recovery values for various productive methods and formations from experience. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a method of estimating the initial quantity of oil and gas present in a reservoir. The method is based on field operating data and the properties of crude oil-gas mixtures. The principles involved, the data required, the assumptions necessary, and an example of the method will be given. The method is entirely independent of sand volumes and formation porosities. The iron industry has been so markedly the cynosure of all eyes, that a sense of weariness has overtaken many on-lookers, and a new wonder is desired. While the commercial phase of the iron industry has necessarily engrossed the public attention and probably is the more worthy of record, still the mechanical and metallurgical phases have recorded conspicuous advances and merit attention. In order to appreciate the present condition of blast-furnace practice, it is necessary before enumerating the advances made during the past decade to give a brief discussion of the tendencies in the methods of administration as well as the conditions governing supremacy, for these factors have modified the aims of the manager. It might also be well to apologize for a record of the advances made during such a short period as a decade, were it not that, for the individual, time is marked as much by the impressions recorded on the brain as by the jumps of the second hand of a watch. Furthermore, this article is written in order to carry out a project of the late Dr. Egleston, to have a record made each decade. I regret that the data collected by him, and forwarded to me, end with 1896, and therefore do not include the interesting results which followed the introduction of Mesabi ores. The perusal of the notes is melancholy reading, somewhat like the feelings we experience in going through a graveyard. It is a record made up of so many plants, which have ceased to be factors in the iron world, if they are not entirely moribund. Historically, they would be interesting, emphasizing as they do the abnormal and somewhat overestimated importance of furnace lines, taken without proper reference to volume of blast and nature of stock used. I regret, however, that the time at my disposal does not permit of this presentation.

It is realized that the depth of fluid maintained in a pumping well is sometimes influenced by other considerations than the quantity of fluid that will enter the well: the prevention of sand incursion, prevention of waste of natural gas, and the maintenance of a suitable submergence for the pump, for example. These latter factors have an important influence on the productivity of the well, so that otherwise unwarranted fluid levels must sometimes be maintained to offset them; but where the handling of unconsolidated sands is not a problem of consequence and where water has been properly excluded, the principles developed here and the practices recommended should apply. The principal objective of the producer should be to produce the maximum quantity of oil in the shortest possible time. Any method or equipment that will increase the rate of production during the early years of the life of the well, when gas pressure is high, will greatly augment the ultimate production. The maintenance of a proper fluid level in the well at all times will go far toward accomplishing this desired result. For a given set of conditions surrounding the flow of oil into a particular well, in which the viscosity of the oil, the porosity and grain size of the sand, and the diameter of the well appear as constants, two variables determine the quantity of oil that will flow from the sand into the well. These are: the effective pressure behind or within the oil in the reservoir sand, and the fluid level maintained within the well. The former is the expulsive force that causes movement of oil from the sand into the well, while the latter determines the magnitude of a resisting force opposing such movement. The first of these factors is largely beyond the control of the oil producer, but it is in his interest to reduce the opposing force to the lowest economic limit.

TWINNING in magnesium is known to occur profusely under certain conditions, and when it occurs in polycrystalline materials it brings about a partial or even a complete change in the preferred orientation. The amount of research on this subject, however, has not been in proportion to its importance as a mechanism of deformation and reorientation. Much of the research has been limited to twinning in single crystals. The present study' concerns polycrystalline sheet, and is an investigation of the twinning produced by plastic deformation as a function of the following variables: I. Direction and type of deformation. 2. Amount of deformation. 3. Speed of deformation. 4. Temperature of deformation. 5. Composition and temper of the sheet. 6. Twins previously produced. 7. Twins previously produced, then annealed. By proper control of these variables it is shown that, on a laboratory scale, samples can be produced that are free from preferred orientations. MATERIALS AND METHODS The materials used were samples of commercial magnesium-alloy sheets with nominal compositions given in Table I. [ ] X-ray diffraction was used in most of this work to detect the twins and to estimate the amount of twinning. Since twinning on {102} planes causes a reorientation of the crystal lattice by 86°, it is very easy to study with X-ray diffraction patterns, particularly if one notices the diffraction ring from the basal plane the 002 reflection. By properly directing the X-ray beam, it is possible to produce 002 reflections from twinned material at, say, the 6 and 12 o'clock positions on the 002 ring, with the untwinned material reflecting to 3 and 9 o'clock positions; and by judging the relative intensity of the arcs on the diffraction ring at these positions, it is possible to judge the amount of twinned material relative to the untwinned. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other principal calcium sulfate mineral has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhydrous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO,) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CAS0;2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. However, of most importance is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaS0;Vi H,O) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advantage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which when mixed with water would form a putty that could be "plastered" on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of its quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term "land plaster" for ground gypsum has remained in use. Another cementituous material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered and it has today almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $500 million per year as illustrated in [Table 1].

The termination of the recent war marked a major changc in the oil-field operations at. Elk Hills. Production was greatly curtailed, various experimental production projects were started, and a long-range exploratory program was inaugurated. Production was reduced from the wartime peak of 65,000 bbl per day to the current rate of about 8ooo bbl per day in order to maintain an available source of crude that can be drawn upon during a national emergency. The existing production rate is deemed essential to carry on the experimental production projects. These projects are being conducted to determine the best methods and means of maintaining the Reserve, shut in, but in a state of readiness to produce the maximum quantity of oil in the most expeditious manner. Projects now being investigated include: (I) protection of surface equipmerit; (2) repair of wells that might damage the reservoir; (3) gas injection; (4) water eneroachment, (5) gravity drainage. An exploratory program is being carried on to determine the amount of recoverable oil in the unexplored portions of the Reserve. The Shallow-zone exploration is practically completed, but owing to the complexity of the Stevens structure and the magnitude of the oil discoveries in the Stevens, exploration will probably continue in that zone for another two years. Introduction Summary of Development History of Elk Hills Although a detailed history of Elk Hills oil field is presented in various publications,1,2 a summary of its unusual development and production history will be given in order that the present problems may be more readily understood. The first development that resulted in commercial production was in the central part of the Reserve. The first well, Hay No. I, in sec 36-R,* was completed in January I9I9, and was soon followed by 37 Others in the same general area. It is commonly referred to as the Hay-Carman area and was shut in in stages from 1925 to 1934 as a result of litigation regarding the title to the land. Not being highly producti,, only about 6½ million barrels of oil with a large volume of gas was produced from the area prior to the shutdown. Shortly after the start of the development of the Hay-Carman area, drilling was started 6 miles east in sec 36-S' Tupman NO. I came in for 5000 bbl per day early in I92o, It was followed by more than 200 others in the next few years, and the field became one of major importance. Produc-

THE GREAT advances made in mechanical engineering during recent years through the use of alloy steels, as illustrated by the development of the airplane and automobile, may be ascribed primarily to the application of nickel as an alloying element. The ternary system iron-carbon-nickel has a wide industrial application and forms, further; the fundamental basis of the even greater class of the widely used quarternary steels such as nickel-chromium, nickel-silicon, and nickel-vanadium. As is not uncommon with such cases of virile growth in an industry, the application of the alloy steel in a largely empirical manner has outstripped its scientific development so that a fertile field for metallographic research still remains. In this field, the basic nickel steels require first consideration and are the subject of the present investigation, which is offered as a preliminary to the study of the more complex alloys of industrial importance. Of the principal tools of metallography-microscopic examination, determination of -mechanical properties, and thermal analysis-the last has developed much more slowly in its application to industrial needs so that the situation often exists that heat treatment operations are based on empirically determined temperatures; that is, temperatures determined without regard to the actual transformation characteristics of the alloy. This situation is undesirable as there is no uniform standard for comparison of results. It is due, outside the usual difficulties involved in temperature measurements, to the pioneer character- of much of the published work; to the lack of definiteness of the Ac2 transformation,1 particularly in low-carbon steels; to the failure to define operating conditions completely; and to the paucity of information correlating thermal characteristics with results of heat treatment.

Dissolution of a ferric oxide in acid solution is divided into two different types In the accelerated type dissolution proceeds in three stages 1) an inittal reaction during which the dissolved amount of oxide is nearly proportional to the cube root of time ; 2) an accelerated reaction: and 3) a final stage during which dissolution approaches completion. This course of dissolution gives an S-shaped curve in the above sequence OH a log weight percent of dissolved oxide against log time graph. In the parabolic type dissolution proceeds in four stages: first and second stages similar to those of the accelerated type; 3) parabolic-rate dissolution during which the dissolved amount of oxide is nearly proportional to the square root of time: and 4) a final stage. The effect of the kind of acid, the temperature of solution, and the concentration of acid was investigated. The results are discussed and a rate equation is proposed. AN attempt has been made to obtain some information on dissolution of a ferric oxide in various acid solutions. In view of hydrometallurgical processes the dissolution of ferric oxide is of less importance than that of zinc oxide or copper oxide in general. One of a few processes which intend to dissolve ferric oxide is an elimination of iron impurity from acid-insoluble materials. However, most leaching processes of oxide ores and cinders are accompanied with more or less dissolution of iron. According to Pryor and Evans1 the rate of dissolution of a ferric oxide in various acids decreased in the order of hydrofluoric acid > hydrochloric acid > sulfuric acid > perchloric acid. This order was in accord with the order of decrease of the complexing affinity of the anion for ferric ion,

GRAIN boundary migration in V-shaped thin specimens of high purity silver was studied. Each specimen contained two crystals having the relative orientation: (111)A/(111)B; (ll0)A/(101)B. The boundary between these two crystals varied between a continuous curved and an alternating two plane interface. The plane interfaces were oriented parallel to (101)A/(011B) and (121)A/(211)B. Traces of these planes are shown in Fig. 1. Evidently the two plane interface, although of higher area, comprises lower total interface energy than the average curved boundary it replaced. The plane boundaries were found to move at 650 °C to consume the broad segment of the V opposite to the direction of interface area and energy decrease. On investigation, using the thermal etching technique of Hendrickson and Machlin,1 it was found that the outer grain contained 8.3x108 more dislocations per cm" than the grain at the apex of the V. Consequently, the boundary moved to decrease the strain energy associated with the difference in dislocation density across the boundary. The rates of motion of specific {110} and {112} boundaries were measured during interrupted anneals at 650°C by referring the position of the boundaries to each other and a fiducial line on the specimen surface. The measured rates of motion are 0.075 and 0.025 mm per hr for the {110} and {112} boundaries, respectively. Plots of grain boundary motion vs time of annealing show straight lines with little deviation of data points from these lines.

Univariant equilibria between the Ibcc, IIhcp, and UIfee phases of thallium have been determined and indicate a triple point at 110°C and 37 kbars. Calculated II —I transformation curves are compared with the experimental. Transformation volumes and/or enthalpies are calculated and enthalpies are compared with available data. ThE triple point of solid thallium has been reported by Bridgman as 153°C and 38 kbar.' More recently, Jayaraman et at.2 have reported the triple point as near 115°C and 39 kbars. Meyerhoff and Smith,3 assuming the elevated-pressure modification of thallium is fcc, as Kaufman suggested,4 and that it is continuous with the room-temperature fcc phase in the Tl-In system, have used pressure data up to 5 kbars to predict the triple point at 162°C and 35.8 kbars. Piermarini and weir5 have indeed found the elevated-pressure phase to be fcc. The effect of variations of pressure and temperature in the IIhCp — Ibcc transformation in thallium have also been reported by werner6 and more recently by Ponyatovskii.7 The work reported here is part of an investigation of the effects of temperature and pressure on the Tl-In system. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The onset and progress of transformation were determined by changes in resistance. A commercially available tetrahedral-type pressure apparatus was used. Specimens of 0.060 in. diam, representing 0.63 pct of the cell volume, were encased in AgCl and mounted in pyrophyllite, as shown schematically in Fig. 1. It can be seen that the specimen is in series with the graphite furnace. Resistance changes of 0.1 pct could be detected with a Kelvin bridge. Resistance of the sample was of the order of 1 milliohm. Other pertinent details in regard to calibration and cell-assembly design are given elsewhere.' Temperature calibration of the cell was carried out in two ways as a function of input wattage. Ore broken at the mine or quarry face generally is loaded by power shovels into large trucks or rail cars and hauled to a primary crushing plant where it is reduced to a more workable size for ease in handling. The primary crushing plant is customarily located as close as possible to the center of gravity of the ore body and the projected limits of the mine pit to minimize the cost of hauling and to increase safety from flying rock as a result of blasting operations. A belt conveyor is used to transport the crushed product to a nearby ore treatment plant or, should this plant be located some distance away, the ore is loaded directly into cars and hauled by rail. Between trips the crusher product is accumulated in bins or stock piles. In all open pit mining and quarrying operations, the power shovel, the transportation equipment, and the primary crushing plant should work as a team, complementing each other. When establishing the design and selecting the equipment for these closely integrated operations, capital and operating costs for each unit operation must be weighed to achieve an optimum balance. Rising labor costs have given impetus to the universal trend toward greater efficiency, higher speed and larger equipment, and higher degrees of automatic control. The result is that power shovels have increased in size, haulage trucks are larger and faster, and only coarse crushers with feed openings adequate to receive run-of-mine lumps of ore with a minimum of secondary blasting are selected for new installations. These coarse crushers also have large through-put capacities, even when adjusted to produce a 6- to 10-in. size of product, thus making it possible to use a single stage of coarse crushing at the average mine. The use of a single crusher results in a compact crushing plant layout consisting of a dumping pocket for receiving loads of run-of-mine ore, a coarse crusher followed by a surge chamber for the crushed product, and a feeder to withdraw the ore at a uniform rate to deposit it on a belt conveyor. It is perhaps a little difficult for Americans fully to appreciate the slow progress in the search for oil in Australia. Conditions are so different from those in the United States that methods must also differ considerably. Australia possesses an area almost exactly equal to that of the United States, but has a population of less than 7,000,000, and this population is concentrated almost entirely around the eastern and southern coasts of the continent. There are, therefore, vast "empty spaces" entirely unpopulated or exceedingly sparsely populated. The emptiness is due not to any lack of energy or initiative on the part of Australians but to the arid and waterless character of much of the country's interior. Throughout the greater part of the area that is comparable with the Mississippi drainage area of the United States, there is not a single flowing stream, and over most of it the rainfall is less than 7 in. a year. This hinders exploration and geological survey, and also isolates from potential markets many of the regions that otherwise might be considered worth prospecting. Also, Australia consists of six independent and sovereign states. With the establishment in 1901 of the Commonwealth of Australia, the states retained complete control of lands and mineral rights. Each state has its own petroleum legislation, and the absence of a central controlling authority has tended to confusion and to the introduction of many complications in oil prospecting. There are three major "territories," administered by the Federal Government; namely, the Northern Territory, enclosed between the northern parts of Queensland and Western Australia, within Australia itself, and the Territories of Papua and New Guinea in the island of New Guinea. Land and mineral legislation in these territories is not uniform. Furthermore, during the late twenties there occurred an orgy of company flotation and indiscriminate drilling, wQch resulted in the discovery of some definite indications of oil in three of the states and two of the territories, but which failed to develop any producing oil field in the common acceptation of the term. THE property of the Andes Copper Mining Co. is in the central part of the Republic of Chile, Province of Atacama, 147 km. (91.5 miles) eastward by rail from the port of Chanaral. At this point the Andean system is made up of two principal ranges. The mine is on the westerly slope of the outer, or western, range, at a mean elevation of 3250 m. (10,500 ft.). A meter-gage railroad extends from the company's port at Barquito, near Chañaral, to the reduction plant at Potrerillos. This road has a total length of 151 km. (94.0 miles), of which 93 km. (57.79 miles) are owned by the Andes Copper Mining Co. The remainder of the road is owned by the state. The company operates its trains over the portion of the road owned by the state, under an agreement with the Chilean Government. The mine is connected with the reduction plant by a meter-gage railroad, 10 km. (6.214 miles) long, which extends from the coarse-ore bins at the metallurgical plant to the underground storage bins at the mine. Tunnels make up 60 per cent. of the total length of this railroad. As is characteristic of the Andean region in Chile, the topography of the locality is extremely rough, and a number of points near the mine have elevations of from 15,000 to 16,000 feet. History of Potrerillos Mine The ore occurrence has been known for many years, and many of the claims under individual ownership were worked in a small way before the property was acquired by the present owner—the Andes Copper Mining Company. The highest grade oxide ores near the surface were mined by primitive methods and, after sorting, the product, assaying around 15 per cent, copper, was hauled by mule carts a distance of about 80 km. (49.71 miles)

A well can flow exclusively through the casing or exclusively through a tubing but can also flow partly through a casing and at the top part through a tubing. The main principles of the flowing of wells under these conditions were explained in the author's former paper.' Practically all factors that influence the regular flow are dealt with therein. The question of irregular flow, however, will be discussed briefly here. As a rule, an irregular flow must be avoided, as it may be assumed that the efficiency is thereby very small, while on many fields it is injurious to the sand of the oil-bearing layer. Periodical flowing often occurs with rising mixtures of gas and liquid. The phenomenon can be explained if it is accepted that two conditions are possible in the mixture; namely, the foam condition and the mist condition. If there is no stabilizer in the liquid, the foam condition can exist only when the liquid forms a greater portion of the volume than the gas. The mist condition, on the other hand, can exist only when the liquid occupies a smaller part of the volume than the gas. The foam condition occurs when there are gas bubbles in the liquid mass, while in the mist condition drops of liquid are disseminated in a gas-filled space. For sake of simplicity, it has been assumed that the mist condition prevails when 50 per cent. or more of the volume is occupied by gas, while with less than 50 per cent. gas the foam condition will arise. For distilled water and for oils which do not tend to form stable foams this is probably approximately true. If this does not hold good, however, two cases are possible: (1) The fields of the two conditions overlap or (2) they do not meet. If the fields of the conditions overlap there is an intermediate field where either of the two conditions can exist, depending on the history of the mixture.
