The lack of a continuous operating balance in petroleum refining, which is analyzed in this paper, is by no means a feature solely of this division of the oil industry. Serious disequilibria of a capital as well as an operating nature exist both in the producing and marketing departments, while problems in the former and to some degree the latter are complicated by political involvements. Attention has previously been directed to the unstabilizing influence of present proration formulas in stimulating unnecessary drilling.' While equilibrium in petroleum refining operations has been fairly well maintained in the past decade, examination of departures may prove fruitful. Economic analysis is the application of time and motion study to the functioning of management, rather than labor. Properly applied it may reveal changes in policies that would increase the utility of the properties and facilities of the industry for stockholders, employees and the public, while contributing a stabilizing influence to the general economy. The study of economic equilibrium is essentially one of measurement and interpretation, requiring adequate data and the development of a technique of analysis that employs statistical and mathematical methods as a supplement to the broad descriptive phase of economics. THE milling practice at Mascot, at present, consists of dry crushing to 5/8 in., jigging, fine grinding, and flotation. The ore arrives at the mill from two mines, No. 1 mine shaft being located in the mill proper, and No. 2 mine shaft being situated about 2000 ft. east of the mill. No. 2 mine is served by a coarse-crushing plant and aerial tramway to the mill bins. In jigging the No. 2 mine ore, 50 per cent. of the mill feed is rejected by the jigs as a jig tailing ranging from 5/8 in. to 10 mesh; the balance of this ore, after removing a jig concentrate, is ground to flotation feed. In jigging No. 1 mine ore, approximately 80 per. cent. of the mill feed is rejected as a coarse jig tailing, and the balance is ground to flotation feed without the removal of a jig concentrate. The difference in the treatment is due to the fact that No. 2 mine ore carries a higher content of zinc than that from No. 1 mine. Of the total concentrates produced, 30 per cent. are made on jigs and 70 per cent. by flotation. At present, 1350 tons of No. 2 ore and 800 tons of No. 1 ore are treated each 24 hours. The recoveries for a typical week are as follows: Heads 3.55 Jig concentrates 61.30 Jig tails 0.80 Flotation concentrates 60.60 Flotation tails 0.09 Extraction 86.50 The associated minerals are a straw-colored sphalerite, dolomite, calcite, pyrite, quartz, and a small amount of greenockite, which occurs as a stain and sometimes small crystals along with sphalerite, but is comparatively rare. THE fact that this latest and most modern of the Universal Atlas Cement Company's plants at Northampton, Pa., is the fifth to be built on these same properties, and their development has been coincidental with the development of the portland cement industry in the United States, makes it appropriate to sketch briefly the history of the successive steps. In 1889 the original Atlas Portland Cement Co. started its first plant at Coplay, Pa., which is just across the Lehigh River from the present operation. Here the first successful rotary kiln was operated. These kilns were 6 ft. in diameter and 60 ft. long; they used oil for fuel until 1895, when the company developed the first burner for pulverized coal. Shortly thereafter the Atlas company acquired property on the Northampton side of the river and built its plants Nos. 2, 3 and 4 within the following 10 years. During the same period the production of portland cement in the country was increasing rapidly; owing largely to the development of the rotary kiln and improved grinding machinery, which lowered the cost and improved the quality of cement. The general tendency has been to increase the length of the kiln and grind both raw material and finished product finer. In 1930 the Atlas Portland Cement Co. and the Universal Portland Cement Co. united to form the Universal Atlas Cement Co., and the same policy of improving the product has been continued. Because of the large amount of research carried on by manufacturers and consumers, including government agencies, there is a demand for cement of different chemical and physical characteristics for different kinds of structures. Hence many engineers in recent years have been asking for cements of certain definite chemical analyses, which they think are best for their particular jobs. This has compelled the manufacturer to make several different types of cement by variations of chemical composition. These are generally made by adding silica, iron and lime to the standard mixture, which necessarily increases the cost of the product. Therefore the Universal Atlas Cement Co., in planning the modernization of its Northampton plant, gave this particular phase of the problem considerable study. Research and experimentation have developed the practicability of making a wide variety of differently proportioned raw materials for cement by a process of subtraction rather than by addition. With such process, it is possible to discard the undesirable aluminates and silicates from the ample supply of impure limestone available from the company's property rather than by adding high-grade limestone obtained from distant sources. This procedure requires mineral separation by centrifugal sedimentation and froth flotation. DgIel-ential thermal, nretallographic, and X-ray paramzetric methods were used to establish the Yb-Pb phase dingram. The terminal solid solubilities in the system are less than 0.2 at. pct. Lead additions lower the 792°C transformation tewzperature of pure ytterbiun~ at 787°C by means of an inverted peritectic veaction. Ytterbium additions raise the 327oC melting point of lead to 329°C by means of a perilectic reaction. Three intermetallic compounds Yb2Pb, YbPb, and YbPb, melt congruerttly at 1246", 1116o, and 740°C. respectively. YbsPb3 forms by a peritectic reacliorz at 1250°C. YbzPb crystallizes in the PbCh (C23) type structure and the orthorhombic latliceo constants are a, = 7.478. bo = 5.225, aud C0 = 9.549A. YbsPbs crystallizes in the hfnsSi3 (D8a) type structure. The hexa~nal lattice constants for this phase are a, = 9.325 and co = 6.92d. YbPbl crystallizes in the cubic AuCU3 (Ll2) type structure with a: = 4.8628 + 0.0008A. YbPb is diwrorphic with the structure change occurring al 507°C upon healing. The crystal structures of the two forttzs were not determined. Eulectic reactions occur at 5.1 at. pct Pb and 769oC, 41.5 at. pct Pb and 1086oC, and G8.0 at. pct Ph and 717°C: RELIABLE information concerning the alloying behavior of most of the rare-earth metals is scarce. A systematic study of the rare earth-lead alloy systems now in progress is an effort to supply such information. Determination of the phase diagram of the Yb-Pb alloys is the first step of this study. Variations in the valence of normally divalent ytterbium may be studied by comparing the characteristics of the Yb-Pb alloys to those of the trivalent rare earth-lead and of the divalent alkaline-earth-lead systems. Of particular interest are the melting temperatures of the intermetal-lic compounds since these are known to be high relative to the melting points of the constituent metals. Crys-tallographic and magnetic susceptibility data for the rare earth-lead alloys are to be included in the comparative study. Results from this and subsequent investigations should provide a better understanding of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The major impurities in the ytterbium and lead used in this investigation are listed in Table I. The lead was obtained from Cominco Products, Inc., and was specified to be 99.99 pct pure. A COMPREHENSIVE study of insoluble residues in the productive Permian limestone in the Hobbs and Eunice fields, Lea County, N. M., has been conducted by Shell Petroleum Corp. engineers {luring the past two years. This study was prompted by the belief that the stratigraphy of the producing formation might be worked out in detail and that some relationship might be established between the permeable oil, gas, and water zones and correlatable lithologic horizons within the productive formation. As a result of the study, correlations have been established which have proved of great value to both an orderly development and corrective program.

Direct platinum carbon replicas have been used to study substrates prior to growth and after initial nu-cleation of the layer. Replicas have been directly stripped and correlations have been made with other replica techniques. Mechanically polished substrates are very flat with occasional areas of "dirt", which is apparently silicon. When such substrates are etched in hydrochloric acid gas, scratches and hexagonal defects (thought to be polishing compound) are revealed, together with areas of apparent redeposition. Chemically polished substrates are much less flat although much more homogeneous in appearance. Heat treat)nents have no effect. Nuclei deposited on these surfaces, using a normal silicon tetrachloride system, have been examined. Nuclei on mechanically polished subsrates occur in random areas only, whereas on chemically polished surfaces they are more uniformly distributed. THE interest in the study of thin films and now their rapidly expanding use in many fields has increased over a period of years. Much of this current interest, particularly in the field of single-crystal or epitaxial thin films, has derived its stimulus not only from possibilities for application but also from fundamental electron-microscope studies which have indicated the manner of growth of such layers from the initial nuclei.1-5 Previous work involving study of growth processes may be divided into three categories. First, vacuum deposition, primarily of metals, on a variety of substrates has been studied by electron microscopy and electron-diffraction techniques. These have shown the three-dimensional aspect of nucleation and the remarkable liquidlike behavior of the growing nuclei which coalesce to form a complete layer. More recently this work has been expanded in two ways: by growth inside the electron microscope this has obvious advantages for kinetic studies; and by growth in ultrahigh vacuum—much of this work has been done on semiconductors.8-11 It is of interest to note that metals, specifically gold deposited on rock salt, will form only polycrystalline layers in ultrahigh vacuum unless the substrate surface is contaminated.12 In general the mode of growth for vacuum-deposited semiconductor films is the same as that for metal films. The second method of growth that has been studied is that of electrodeposition.13,14 The little that has been published suggests that the mode of growth is similar to the vacuum case, except that irregularities may perturb the electric field and disturb the growth process. The third and last primary method of growing epitaxial layers is by use of chemical methods. These techniques have generated much interest and much has been published on them. Considerable electron-microscope work has been done on the defects in the layers; however comparatively little work has been undertaken on the initial nucleation and early stages of growth. Confining ourselves now exclusively to the case of silicon, Charig et a1.15 have considered the growth of silicon on silicon substrates by hydrogen reduction of trichlorosilane, and studied the films by means of replica and transmission techniques. Subsequently they have studied the same system for growth on quartz,16 and with the addition of pyrolysis of silane on quartz and alumina.17 Also Manasevit el al. have studied deposits using silane and silicon tetrachloride on sapphire.18-14 Finally, in this volume studies of deposition on beryllia and sapphire are reported. Although Revesz and Evans20 have examined complete layers, grown by means of the widely used silicon tetrachloride reaction, no detailed examination similar to that published by Charig and Joyce21 for the trichlorosilane system has been given. Therefore this investigation has examined substrate surfaces prior to growth and then nucleation on these surfaces for the silicon tetrachloride system. EXPERIMENTAL In this work the surfaces have been studied by means of standard replica techniques. This investigation establishes the effect of ferrite grain size resulting from various heat treatments on the transition temperature of a semikilled steel plate. Different austenitizing temperatures and various cooling rates were used. The ductile-brittle transition temperatures were determined by the Navy tear test and the keyhole Charpy test. THE data presented in this paper deal with quality characteristics of ship-plate material which were investigated in a research project sponsored at Battelle by the Bureau of Ships, Dept. of the Navy. Specifically, the object of this investigation was to establish the effect of ferritic grain size (resulting from various heat treatments) on the so-called transition temperature of ship-plate steel. Transition temperature is not a fixed property of steel. It is derived from a series of static or dynamic tests made at various temperatures and is qualified by specifying the type of test employed as well as the testing criteria. Because in earlier investigations of ship-plate quality1,2 the so-called Navy tear test and standard notched-bar tests (keyhole Charpy) proved to be useful in interpreting instances of brittle behavior of ship plate in service, these tests were used in the investigation reported in this paper. By definition,' in the Navy tear tests the highest temperature at which one or more of four specimens breaks with a brittle fracture (that is, when less than 50 pct of the fracture area has a dull fibrous texture) is termed "transition" temperature. In the Charpy tests, the 12 ft-lb level of energy absorption was used as a criterion indicating the "transition" temperature, although other levels of energy absorption were also used for comparison. Earlier work" on ship-plate steels indicated that the temperature at which ship plate is finished has a very significant effect on its notched-bar properties. Plates rolled in the laboratory, where the finishing temperature can be carefully controlled, showed a 16°F decrease in tear test transition temperature when the finishing temperature was lowered 200°F (from X" to Y°F). The same plates showed a drop of 10°F in the keyhole Charpy transition temperature from the same decrease in finishing temperature. Commercially finished plates' exhibit a similar trend. When the ferrite grain size of the hot-rolled laboratory plates was determined, a close relationship was found between the ferrite grain size and the notched-bar transition temperature." " he indicated relationship between grain size and transition temperature was in agreement with the findings on low carbon steels of Hodge, Manning, and Reichhold' despite the differences in composition of the steels. The cooling rate after rolling varies from one steel plant to another. This variation changes the micro-structure" and appears very likely to affect the notched-bar properties of the steel plates. In the investigation summarized in the present paper, heat treatments simulating finishing practices in the hot rolling of ship plate were used in order to vary the ferritic grain size. It is believed that the indicated relationship between grain size and transition temperatures of the ship-plate material will prove useful in estimating the effect of rolling temperature and of cooling rates from rolling temperatures on the notched-bar properties of semikilled steel plate. Material The semikilled steel plate used in this investigation was a ¾ in. hot-rolled plate from an open hearth heat. Other plates from this heat have been used on many other studies performed for the Ship Structure Committee," "," and the heat has been identified as project steel "A". The chemical composition of the plate1 was 0.25 pct C, 0.49 pct Mn, 0.011 pct P, 0.045 pct S, 0.04 pct Si, and 0.004 pct N.

A study was made of the effect of ß grain size on the tensile ductility of a-ß titanium alloys haet treated to strengths in the range 165,000 to 180,000 psi. It was concluded that the primary cause of $ embrittlement is the large grain size which is obtained so rapidly in many a-ß titanium alloys when heated into the ß field. It was also found that grain-boundary a and acicular intragranular a in the microstructure are not necessarily detrimental to the tensile ductility if the prior ß grain size is sufficientlv fine. BETA embrittlement occurs in a-ß alloys when the finish hot-working or stages of the subsequent heat treatment have been done at temperatures in the ß field. In order to avoid this embrittlement, for-gings must be finished at temperatures under the ß transus. For better workability, it would be desirable to forge at temperatures in the ß field. For this reason, research has been conducted to determine the cause of ß embrittlement. Although ß grain size has been considered as a possible contributing factor to ß embrittlement, only limited research has been done to evaluate its effect. The effect of addition elements on ß grain growth in unalloyed titanium has been studied by Liu.' Complete mechanical property data, however, were not obtained for correlation with grain size. Ogden and coworkers2 have investigated the effect of both a and ß grain size and grain shape in Ti-Cr-Mo alloys. Their data indicated that tensile ductility was relatively insensitive to ß grain size at annealed strength levels (140,000 psi ultimate). No study has apparently been made to determine the relationship between ß grain size and ß embrittlement in a-ß alloys heat treated to high strength (180,000 psi ultimate). The high-strength condition is that in which ß embrittlement is particularly severe. Beta grain size is not easily varied through the use of a range of annealing times and temperatures in the ß field, because of the rapidity with which ß grain growth occurs. Short-time heating techniques are needed to obtain the smallest ß grains. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In this research, the experimental procedure was as follows: 1) Tensile and microimpact specimen blanks were resistance heated to produce a range of ß grain sizes. 2) The tensile and microimpact blanks were then solution-treated in the a-ß field and aged to produce predetermined ultimate tensile strengths in the range 165,000 to 180,000 psi. Tensile and impact ductility were then correlated with a grain size for constant strength levels. Materials—The alloys Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-4A1-4Mn, and Ti-16V-2.5Al are representative of the heat-treatable a-ß types in which ß embrittlement can be severe. The compositions and ß transi of the heats studied are given in Table I. The Ti-16V-2.5Al heat was melted and fabricated to 1/4 in. round at Battelle; the other alloys were obtained as 1/4 in. round rolled from commercial heats. The micro-structures of the as-rolled alloys were fine a-ß mixtures. This structure is typical of titanium alloys hot-worked extensively in the a-ß field. Resistance-Heating Treatments to Establish ß Grain Size—For direit resistance heating, a 1/4-in.-diam s~ecimen was heated with a 3000-watt transformer rated for 1000 amp with adjustable secondary voltage. The apparatus included a spray quench fixture. Both heating and quenching periods could be automatically controlled. For temperature measurements, 28-gage Chromel-Alumel wires were tack-welded to the specimen at its midpoint. A high-speed recorder-controller was used to control the heating cycle.

The turbulent flow drag coefficients, or friction factors, have been experimentally determined for the cut-tings normally encountered in drilling operations. The gas law and average drag coefficients for characteristically flat particles (limestones and Shales) and for angular to sub-rounded particles (sandstones) were used to extend Newton's equation to a more useful form. The resulting equations are expressions for the slip velocity of a particle as a function of the particle size and shape, the bottom-hole injection Pressure, and the Bottom-hole temperature. The velocities necessary to lift actual rock cuttings as observed in the laboratory were compared with velocities predicted from the derived equations. Results indicate that there is no single correct circulating velocity and that the commonly used 3,000 ft/min linear velocity may he sufficient to lift only very mall particles. The advantage, in terms of horsepower requirements, of cycling high pressure air to obtain lower compression ratios was shown. INTRODUCTION A promising departure from standard rotary hydraulic drilling is air or gas drilling. In many instances the rate of penetration and bit life increases resulting from this method have been very substantial. Further the application of air drilling in areas of lost circulation or water sensitive pay zones has been highly successful. Purpose For the drilling contractor, the practical question remains, "How much air pressure and volume should I have?' lt is necessary to have a reasonable knowledge of the air velocities and pressures required in air drilling operations for the proper design and most advantageous use of surface equipment and for adequate removal of cuttings from the borehole. Eased on experience, most operators agree that at least 3,000 ft/min linear velocity is necessary for satisfactory hole cleaning.' It was the purpose of this investigation to evaluate the drag coefficients, or friction factors, for the cuttings normally encountered in drilling operations, i.e., sandstones, limestones and shales, and to utilize the values obtained to develop an expression for the minimum velocities and pressures (hence the volumes) necessary to lift these cuttings. THEORY Several investigators have done extensive work on the ability of drilling mud to lift bit cuttings. They conclude that the ability of a drilling mud to lift cuttings is dependent on the density difference between the rock being drilled and the drilling mud, the cutting size and shape, the mud flow constants, and the flow state (laminar, transitional or turbulent) of the mud. However, drilling muds are not true fluids but have a variation of viscosity with velocity in laminar flow and a constant apparent viscosity in turbulent flow. A survey of the literature revealed that no experimental work had been done to determine the velocities necessary to lift actual rock cuttings using a compressible fluid such as air or gas. In 1953, Nicolson6 stated that in air drilling fluid mechanics the particles could be assumed spherical in shape and that ; constant drag coefficient of 0.5 could be used due to the highly turbulent flow of the circulating air. By equating the turbulent resistance on the particle to the gravitational force on the particle, he obtained the expression, ^ = 2.67^y ,.......(1) where V, is slip velocity of spherical particle, ft/sec; D is particle diameter, in.; p, is particle density, 1b/ft8; and p, is fluid density, lb/ft3. However, as stated earlier, most operators seem to agree that adequate hole cleaning can be obtained by circulating a sufficient volume of air to give a linear velocity of 3,000 ft/rnin in the annular space. Basic Equation The velocity with which a solid particle freely falls through a fluid will increase until the accelerating force, gravity, is equal to the resisting forces, buoyancy due to the fluid displaced by the particle and friction due to the relative motion of the particle through the fluid. This paper describes a process developed to recover coal, clays and pyrite from coal wastes. The process consists of fine grinding followed by coal and pyrite flotation which leaves the clays in the flotation pulp. A bituminous coal refuse containing 10% sulfur and 30% carbonaceous material was treated by this method to yield a coal product containing 4% sulfur, 10% ash; a pyrite product containing 45% sulfur (84% FeS2), 1% carbonaceous material; and a clay product containing 2% sulfur (3.5% FeS2). The coal yield was about 89%. The pyrite yield was about 77%. The process steps may be entirely flotation, or gravity separation (hydrocycloning) may be used to increase the pyrite : coal ratio in the flotation feed. Cost estimates for the process show a profit of $2.28 per ton of low pyrite grade refuse, but these do not include labor, maintenance, overhead and plant depreciation. The development of this process consisted of three parts: (1) exploratory tests, (2) op-timazation tests and (3) confirmatory tests. The objectionable qualities that sulfur imparts to coal have been commented upon from early times, and they have become more objectionable as the uses of coal have grown. In whatever form coal takes — raw, carbonized or gasified —the sulfur content remains objectionable, and therefore its compounds are removed as completely as possible. It has long been known that sulfur occurs in coal in different forms. In 1861, sulfur was said to exist in the state of sulfuric acid in combination with a base; in combination with iron as iron pyrites; as bisulfides of iron; and in combination with the organic elements of coal.' Pyritic sulfur is a term loosely used to cover the sulfur associated with iron in its various forms. The mineralogically recognized forms are pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe 1-x S) and marcasite (FeS2). The particle sizes of pyrites vary widely. Isolated grains of marcasite smaller than 15 microns have been found disseminated through coal.2 Hair-like "veins" of pyrite filling cracks in vitrain have been found. At the other extreme, lumps or nodules of pyrites large enough for removal by hand picking have been encountered. Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur, does not exist as discrete particles, but is instead intimately associated with the coal structure and thus it is impossible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical or mechanical means.2 In the preparation of coal for its various markets, the pyrite minerals (pyrites) are separated from the raw coal feed. This separation process concentrates the pyrites in the tailings or other waste products. It would be desirable to recover these pyrites for three reasons: (1) Pyrites are potential sources of sulfur and iron. In 1967, for the fifth consecutive year, Free World consumption of sulfur exceeded production.3 Propelled by the shortage, the domestic price of sulfur has risen from $24 to $38 per long ton (bright). (2) The refuse, when placed in piles, becomes ignited. The pyrites (FeS2) bum, giving off SO,. Thus, the pyrites are a cause of air pollution. (3) Also, the pyrites undergo chemical reaction when exposed to air. The refuse is leached by waters which result in stream pollution due to the water-soluble iron and acidic reaction products. Coal refuse also contains coal minerals and clay minerals. Therefore, any process for recovering the pyrites must successfully separate them from the coal and clay minerals. In the study discussed here, ten different bituminous coal refuse samples were successfully upgraded in pyrite content. These samples represented a wide variety of coal waste materials from Pennsylvania and other states. The variabilities of the sulfur and coal contents are shown in Table I. The extremes are Sample J, a high sulfur-low coal, and Sample B, a low sulfur-high coal. This plant was built in 1907 at the Bankhead mines to manufacture briquettes by the Zwoyer process under license from the Zwoyer Fuel Go., of New York, N. Y. The building was constructed to contain two units, each of a capacity of 10 tons per hr.; one unit was installed at the time the building was constructed, and the second unit is now being built. The coal used is an anthracite, which is more friable than that of Pennsylvania, and, as a consequepce, a larger percentage of dust or waste is produced, which was formerly thrown upon the slack-pile as waste, but is now passed to the " dust-bin " in the breaker, from which it is conveyed to the briquette-plant. An average analysis of the coal, published by Lewis Stockett and 13. R. Warden,' is as follows: Per Cent. A shale layer, buried beneath two or three thousand feet of strata, in some instances, will upon folding become thicker in the synelines and thinner on top of the anticlines. This can be accounted for, in part, by the stretching on the crests of the fold and the compressing in the troughs; but this will by no means account for all of it, as is shown in the example herein set forth. It is my firm belief that the rest of the thickness is due to flow. What causes the movement, however, does not concern us here, SO long as there is movement, for this article purposes to show its effect upon the producing area of different sands. It is the author's hope, in this way, to drop a hint or two that may be valuable to the oil geologist, in making estimates of future productions and values of oil properties. An example will be given from property in the famous Gushing Pool in northeastern Oklahoma, where the author has had occasion to make a detailed study before recommending some property to his company, and has then been able to watch the results of this work. The author never mapped the surface structure in this pool, as this had been done by Frank Buttram when he was with the Oklahoma Geological Survey. We are using, therefore, a section of his map in this article for our surface contours. The main east dip comes farther east than this section shows. From the 10-ft. contours in Fig. 1, it will be seen that the surface folding is very slight, but in the contour map of the Bartlesville sand (Fig. 2), which was the greatest producing sand, we see much more complex folding. It seems that the folding becomes greater with the depth. Folding may have started in Middle Pennsylvanian times and continued through the Upper Pennsylvanian which is found at the surface. This may, or may not, have been the cause of the increase of folding with depth. However, the fact that mostly concerns us is the interval of shale between the Bartlesville sand and the Tucker sand. The Tucker is the next productive sand below the Bartlesville. Not enough wells have been drilled to the Tucker sand to make a contour map of it, but

INTRODUCTION THE development of residual stress in strip during rolling has not been systematically studied. A few scattered papers1-3 mention the existence of residual stresses in rolled strip or touch upon some of their consequences,4 but there is no report of experimental studies in the literature describing the effect of roll diameter, strip thickness, reduction per pass, metal or metal temper on the magnitude of residual stresses developed in strip. A knowledge of the effect of these factors is of utmost importance since the present trend in some mills to roll thicker castings brings the rolling operation directly into that set of conditions which, as will be brought out in the present paper, can develop residual stresses of a high order of magnitude. Fundamentally, residual stresses are developed when a metal is inhomogeneously unloaded from a plastic stress state. A quantitative treatment of the problem requires a reasonably complete understanding of both the plastic stress state existing in the metal during deformation and the elastic stress state that would exist in the metal if the metal deformed as a perfectly elastic body. Our knowledge of either state during rolling is so meager that we can make no more than certain limited predictions. The external stress state* operating between the roll and the metal consists of compressive stresses acting almost perpendicularly to the strip surface but vary [ ] ing in intensity both across the width of the strip and along the length of contact between the roll and the strip. An example of such a stress distribution is shown in Fig I. The nature of the internal stress state, produced by this distribution, is not known. Various investigators,5-7 however, have felt that a qualitative similarity must exist between the internal stress state so produced and that produced in a wide strip that is compressed between two flat-nosed punches. In the latter case the external stress state is represented by a uniformly distributed compressive stress acting perpendicularly over the face of the tool. There are two main sources of the water that floods productive oil or gas sands. The water may rise from the lower depths of the producing stratum, or it may come from beds above or below the oil-bearing formation. Usually the recovery of oil is decreased by water entering the oil sands, and most oil-field waters, especially those of deep wells, tend to foster the formation of an emulsion, which is expensive to treat. This paper deals with a method of distinguishing between waters that encroach upon oil-bearing beds from sources in the same stratum and waters that reach the oil sands from horizons above. In order to remedy effectually water difficulties in oil and gas wells, it is absolutely necessary to determine the source of the invading water. Sometimes evidence such as the structural relations between the strata penetrated by deighboring wells and those found in the well under investigation is not adequate; also, data from drill logs and well records, from mechanical tests made on the wells by plugs, testers, drilling tools, etc., and from tests by chemical indicators such as eosin and Venetian red, may be unsatisfactory, for such data may fail to locate the source of the infiltrating waters. As a resort in such cases, the application of chemical analyses, that is, the comparison of an analysis of the water in question with that of typical waters from the various water horizons in that particular district, has in certain instances proved of value. This method has been used to advantage in the Westside Coalinga field of California, where the source of water may be fairly definitely determined , from its composition. The chief conclusions concerning the chemistry of the oil-field waters in California by G. S. Rogers1 are: "Oil-field water is not necessarily salty, as is generally believed, and may not be even slightly salty to the taste. The degree of concentration of chloride in such water is governed primarily by local conditions and is not affected by the position of the water in relation to oil. " -Charles Kettering INTRODUCTION Since the early 1970s, there has been no economic phenomenon that has been more widely discussed or experienced in the United States than inflation. Al- though its precise definition and measurement are elusive, inflation has had pro- found and extensive impacts on the manner in which nearly everyone lives. It is painfully obvious to consumers that inflation is characterized by a continuing up- ward spiral of prices. In a capital-intensive industry like mining, those increases can be positively breathtaking. An interesting example is shown in Table 1. Table I shows that on a unit basis, the equivalent 1980 capital cost of Cuajone was over six times the cost of the adjacent and quite similar Toquepala operation completed in 1959. Such sobering statistics weigh heavily on the minds of executives who are contemplating major investments in new mining facilities. In spite of its monumental presence, inflation has usually been either inadequately covered or totally ignored in textbooks on engineering economy. The reasons for this are not entirely clear, but a contributing factor is the inherent difficulty in accurately predicting inflation. However, under certain conditions, inflation may become the most important factor in a mining investment, and it can rarely be safely ignored in capital investment analyses. DEFINING AND MEASURING INFLATION Defining inflation and related terms is relatively easy. Its measurement, how- ever, is the source of almost endless debate in economic and political circles. How- ever, much of that debate is not relevant to the scope of this book, so that only those issues which impact directly on the capital investment decision are covered in this section. Inflation is the general decline in the value of money as measured by what it will buy. It is clear, then, that the rate of inflation varies with the particular currency under consideration as well as the type of goods and services being purchased. Measurements of grain boundary sliding were made on polycrystal and bicrystal tensile creep specimens of Al-2 pct Mg at 500oand 700oF. Grain and pain boundary orientation factors were studied with respect to their effect on the magnitude and direction of grain boundary sliding. It was concluded that a large part of the observed sliding may be caused by the operation of slip crossing the grain boundaries. Supporting evidence for this model from other investigations is also given. GRAIN boundary sliding in metals during elevated temperature deformation has frequently been thought of as an independent mechanism with its own characteristic stress, temperature, and structure dependence. Further, it is common to regard the grain boundary as the weak link during creep deformation since: 1) the strength of apolycrystallinemetal, as meas-sured by creep rate or rupture life, decreases at\a more rapid rate when sliding comes into action, and 2) grain boundary sliding, as revealed by "boundary darkening" and fold formation is often the first visible deformation. On the other hand, more quantitative observations, in both polycrystals and bicrystals, have shown boundary deformation to be closely related to the over-all deformation of the specimen. The curve of grain boundary contribution to elongation vs time takes a shape similar to that of the total creep curve,',' and the apparent activation energy for sliding appears in most cases to have the same value as that for total creep.3 In order to reconcile these observations, one is left with these possibilities: 1) The grain boundary and grain deformation rates are both controlled by the same rate limiting processes. 2) The rate of sliding is limited by accommodation deformation in the grains. 3) Sliding is the consequence of grain deformation. 4) Grain deformation is dependent on prior grain boundary deformation. Alternatives 2) and 3) would view grain boundary sliding as occurring in series with another deformation process which could be rate controlling. McLean prefers item 3) as the sliding basis,4 where subgrain rotation results from dislocation accumulation in the substructure at the grain boundary. Crussard and Friedel's5 treatment of grain boundary migration considers that dislocations are forced into the grain boundary and are dissociated into dislocations with Burgers' vectors nearly parallel to the grain boundary. The movement of these partial grain boundary dislocations then produces the sliding. The results of this investigation have indicated alternative 3) to be the most appropriate and it is this aspect of grain boundary sliding which will be analyzed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three types of tensile creep tests were employed in this study: (I) A constant load test of one very coarsegrained polycrystalline specimen at 500° F, 3600 psi, 1 pct per/hr strain rate to examine the grain and grain boundary orientation factors in grain boundary sliding. (II) Constant strain rate tests of polycrystalline specimens at 510o and 715o F, 2 pct per/hr strain rate to determine the grain boundary contribution to elongation at very low total strains. (m) Constant strain rate tests of bicrystals of various grain and grain boundary orientations at 500°F, 2 pct per/hr strain rate to obtain further information on the orientation effects in grain boundary sliding. The material used in the tests was a high-purity Al-1'.92 mg alloy, kindly furnished by Alcoa. Its composition is given in Table I. The alloy is a solid solution at the test temperatures. The coarse grained polycrystalline specimen for test (I) was prepared by recrystallizingthe machined specimen, straining it about 1pct intension at room temperature and annealing at 900°F for 8hr. The constant strain rate specimens (11), with an 178 in. sq. by 1/2 in. long gage section, were cut from 1/8 in. thick sheet of cold rolled and annealed (8 hr at 1000oF) material. The latter specimens were supported in a special jig during the milling operations to avoid any bending, and the gage section was subsequently heavily electropolished to remove the cold-worked surface layer. AT the meeting of the Committee on Engineering A Education of the Institute at the New York meeting last February, it was brought out that the number of men graduating in mining engineering from our colleges at the present time is not sufficient to meet the ordinary needs of the mineral industries. Following the meeting, Samuel S. Wyer, consulting engineer of the Fuel-Power Transportation Educational Foundation of Columbus, Ohio, prepared a pamphlet called "Mining Engineering's Appeal to High School Seniors." Under the auspices of this Foundation the pamphlet is being sent to every high school in the United States. The pamphlet does not in any way paint glowing word pictures of the profession; rather it is a statement of the importance of mining engineering in our present-day civilization, together with the requirements in young men who are looking forward to an engineering career.

THE following brief description of the status of operations of the Chile Exploration Co. at Chuquicamata, Chile; and of the plant as it exists today, points out the-great progress that has been made since the initiation of prospect drilling in 1912. During the 11 years which have elapsed since then, a group of small mines, eking out a 'precarious existence, has been consolidated into one large operating property,, taking high rank among the world's producers of copper. After a drilling campaign followed by a construction period, the plant first started operations in 1915. Since then production has been gradually increased, as world conditions permitted, until the present status has been reached.

The requirements of the standard specifications under which Portland cement is sold have materially increased within the past 10 years, but practically all companies are now furnishing cement better than these requirements; in some cases exceeding them by nearly 100 per cent. From a sales standpoint, it is desirable to have a product that is uniform to a high degree and free from occasional quality troubles. A failure in quality, even if it affects only a few hundred barrels out of a yearly output of a million or more, is apt to be talked about in the trade and to affect the salability of the entire output. For these reasons, there has recently been great activity along the lines of quality control and improvement; and some of the most interesting problems of the industry are in this field. From the manufacturing standpoint, the quality of cement is chiefly a matter of uniform and proper chemical composition of the raw mix fed to the kilns plus proper burning in the kilns; the fineness to which the cement is ground, the proportions of gypsum, the method of seasoning, and the like are contributory factors. Uniform chemical composition of the raw mix has been one of the most difficult problems to solve. Most plants will use from 1000 to 3000 tons of rock per day and in but few cases is this material as it lies in the quarry even approximately uniform in composition. The problem, then, is to quarry and mix this raw material in such a manner that every handful passing through the kilns will have practically the same analysis as every other handful. To accomplish this purpose there are two methods of preparation: the wet and the dry. In each process, a stone storage is the first requisite of a successful plant. This storage place may handle the stone before or after crushing; its capacity may vary from two to three days' up to several months' supply, but it should be so designed that it can be filled as desired by the chemist and drawn at such points as will give a mixture of the various kinds of stone coming from the quarry and a reasonably uniform material going to the mill. The size of the storage place and the method of handling should be varied according to the nature of the material.
