In 1913, the Tiro General mine, at Charcas, S.L.P., Mexico, which had been making from 125 to 150 gal. of water per min., was allowed to become flooded, after all the pumps had been removed, and in 1918 the problem of unwatering it came up for solution. There are two vertical shafts, the Tiro General, 1390 ft., and the San Fernando, 1225 ft. in depth, with five connecting levels between them. The San Fernando shaft had been partly retimbered, while the Tiro General had been newly timbered from the collar to 1090 ft. in depth. It had been possible to place guides in only one compartment of the Tiro General, from the collar to the seventh or 850-ft. level, to which it was necessary to lower the water before station pumps could be installed. Soundings indicated that compartments in the Tiro General were open to 1082 and 428 ft., and in the San Fernando shaft to 471, 488, and 586 ft. The water had risen to a point 140 ft. below the collar of the Tiro General shaft.. Pumping Equipment The steam plant at the Tiro General shaft includes one 300-hp., one 150-hp. and one 100-hp. Erie City water-tube boiler, and two 160-hp. Heine water-tube boilers. All but one of these boilers were supposed to be in good shape, but it was soon discovered that six years of idleness in a climate that is foggy for several months of the year had left them in poor condition. The compressed-air plant comprises one Nordberg cross-compound compressor with piston displacement of approximately 2500 cu. ft.of free air compressed to 96 Ib. per sq. in.; and another Nordberg cross-compound with piston displacement of 1235 cu. ft. of free air, to the same pressure. The main pump station is on the seventh level where had been installed a Prescott pot-valve plunger pump with capacity of 200 gal. per min.; also a Gould triplex plunger pump with capacity of 135 gal. per min., driven by a 6 1/2 by 10 by 12 in. steam engine. From the lower levels, the water had been raised to the seventh level by small station pumps and sinking pumps.

ASHBEL WELCH, LAMBERTVILLE, N. J.: Dr. Dudley has given the wear of steel rails under four different conditions. He arrives at the conclusion that the softer rails, or those that from their composition ought to be softer, wear better than the harder. But there is another condition which has an important bearing on the subject, and, should not be overlooked,-the weight on a wheel. With the lighter weights of the past, the softer rails may have worn best; with the heavier weights of the future, the harder may wear best. Weights will probably be increased up to the capacity of steel to bear; then doubtless the harder steel will wear best. A leaden rail with ten pounds on a wheel might carry millions of tons, but with one hundred pounds on a wheel, it would be destroyed by a few thousand tons. So in the days of iron rails, my experience was that the softer rails under light machinery stood better than some of the harder; but under heavy machinery the softer were much the most rapidly destroyed. His doubtless the same with steel. HOSTS of friends will rejoice that T. A. Rickard has been given honorary membership in the Institute. It might well have been done long ago, since, when one reviews distinguished services rendered by individuals to our organization and our profession, it is at once apparent that his name ranks high and that he has merited this distinction for more than three decades. Our by-laws restrict this list to twenty names; "T.A." becomes the sixteenth living member. Young engineers should particularly be pleased; Mr. Rickard has had a career rich in human interest, and full of useful suggestions to the younger men; he has given them good advice and set them a notable example; he, more than anyone else, has shown them how technical writing can be clear and concise; he has inspired youngsters to do their best; he has been their friend. No one has more first-hand knowledge of these facts than the writer of this appreciation:

IN the last year, much information had become available as to the extent that zinc participated in the war effort. The importance of foreign zinc in this program had been indicated by Bateman (M&M April 1945) as of the order of 400,000 tons annually in zinc or contained zinc. Pehrson (M&M April 1945) reviewed the domestic ore-reserve situation with respect to most minerals and metals and showed the extent to which commercial zinc ores had become depleted in this country. This picture was further darkened by O.P.A. figures appearing in E.&M.J. July 1945 in which figures for total production during the three previous years were broken down into percentages produced under ceiling and various quota price categories. True, factors other than depleted ore reserves contributed to this picture. Among the more important of these, were shortage and high cost of labor, both skilled and unskilled, and the general difficulty and cost of maintaining adequate equipment and supplies. The cost of production in the Tri-State district was most affected.

The constitutional diagram has been determined in part for the sgstem Gd-Fe. Seven intermetallic compounds have been found at compositions corresponding to the following Gd-Fe ratios; 2:3, 1.2, 1:3, 2:7, 1:4, 1:5, and 2:17. The GdFe, com-pound has a congruent melting point above 18000C, whereas all of the remaining compounds melt incongruently, A eutectic exists at 13 wt pct Fe at a temperature of 860°C. ALTHOUGH an increasing amount of information is becoming available on the metallurgy of pure rare earth metals, relatively few studies have been made on alloy systems of the rare earths with the transition metals; iron, nickel, and cobalt. Even less data are extant on gadolinium alloys although it could be expected that such alloys might possess interesting structural and magnetic properties. In this paper, we report investigation of the gadolinium-iron alloy system. Studies on systems containing nickel and cobalt will be presented in subsequent papers. Previous data on gadolinium-iron compounds have been reported by Endter and Klemm1 and Jep-son and Duwez.2 Both reports agree on the existence of the GdFe2 phase, which crystallizes with the C-15type structure (face-centered cubic). This is in accord with results of the present work. EXPERIMENTAL The gadolinium metal used was prepared by met-allothermic reduction of high purity gadolinium fluoride. A typical analysis of the metal thus produced indicated the principal impurities to be oxygen, 0.24 pct, and tantalum, 0.2 pct. The iron metal used for alloying was a reagent grade material. Alloys were prepared by arc melting mixtures of the respective metals. Appropriate quantities of the two component metals were carefully weighed, blended and compacted. The compacts were then melted in an arc furnace consisting of a water-cooled copper hearth plate and a water-cooled tungsten-tipped counter electrode contained in a brass vacuum chamber. The furnace was evacuated to an absolute pressure of less than 1 with the leak rate established as being less than 20 per min. The furnace was then back-filled to a pressure of 25 mm of Hg, with a 75 pct He-25 pct Ar mixture. Arc melting at 25 v and 300 amp was maintained for about 30 to 60 sec until the entire visible area of the sample became molten, by which time surface tension had drawn the molten metal pool into a large bead. After allowing the furnace to cool, the alloy button was inverted and the melting process repeated. A series of melts was made covering entire composition ranges from 100 pct Gd to 100 pct Fe. All samples were examined metallographically in the as-melted condition. As the phase diagram became rationalized, and differential thermal analysis had given indications of temperature arrests, annealing was carried out in vacuo or in argon. Generally, compositions containing more than about 60 pct Gd were heat treated at 750°C and alloys containing less than this quantity of gadolinium were annealed at 1000°C. Prolonged annealing times were of the order of 100 to 200 hr. Metallographic examination was repeated on the annealed materials. Although little material loss was noted during alloy preparation, chemical analyses were made on all specimens prepared. The following standard, analytical techniques were used. Samples were dissolved in hydrochloric acid; insoluble material was filtered off, ignited and fused with potassium pyro-sulfate. The cold melt was leached with dilute acid and the solution thus obtained added to the main sample solution. Gadolinium was always determined gravimetri-callv as oxide from oxalate ignition. Iron was removed from an aliquot sample by electrolysis on a mercury cathode at approximately six volts. Gadolinium in the iron-free electrolyte was then precipitated as oxalate which was subsequently ignited to oxide. An intelligent discussion of the oil situation and its needs, whether from the standpoint of the prospector, the operator, the engineer, or the public administrative officer, must be founded upon a knowledge of the law under which oil lands are obtained. A consideration of new legislation must be prefaced by an understanding of the present law and its results. This paper undertakes to present no new remedy for the ills of the present situation, no new solution of the problems the oil business is facing. It attempts merely to summarize the present law, its provisions, its origin, its development, and its effects. The discussion does not pretend to be exhaustive from a legal standpoint. It aims to avoid legal intricacies which tend to. confuse rather than clarify. It seeks but to present the essentials of the existing situation. The title to government lands known to contain valuable deposits of petroleum may be acquired only under the terms of the placer law as embodied in Section 2329 et seq. of the Revised Statutes. As a preliminary to considering the desirability of this situation it is profitable to examine into its origin. Origin of the Law Congress has left no room for doubt as to the legal applicability of the placer law to oil lands. The Act of Feb.11, 1897(29 Stat., 526), provides: "that any person authorized to enter lands under the mining laws of the United States may enter and obtain patent to land containing petroleum or other mineral oils, and chiefly valuable therefor, under the provisions of the laws relating to placer mineral claims.' . The immediate cause for the passage of this Act was stated in a brief report in the, House of Representatives (there was no debate in the Senate) to be a decision of the Department rendered Aug. 27, 1896 (Union Oil Co., 23 L. D., 223), directing the cancellation of an oil placer entry on the ground that land containing petroleum cannot be located and entered as a placer mine. The year 1936 in West Virginia was characterized by increased activity in natural gas. The number of actual completions was only slightly increased but many more wells were drilling than at the end of 1935 and there was almost feverish activity in taking new leases. This pronounced revival is partly due to the fact that the extremely cold winter of 1935-1936 showed that additional supplies of gas would be desirable and partly to the hope of finding new pools in the deeper sands. No new pools have actually been found, but the Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) development of Kanawha County, which was already assured by the end of 1935, was greatly extended into wider and richer territory. The Middle Devonian shale (Childres sand), reached incidentally by Oriskany exploration as well as by direct design, has been productive of gas in much wider areas of Boone, Lincoln, Putnam and Kanawha Counties than heretofore known. Routine drilling to the upper sands in dehed territory, also, was greatly increased, although not yet much reflected in completions. Thc supply of marketable gas, however, has been substantially enlarged. In preparation for further exploration there has been an extensive leasing campaign throughout the entire territory where gas seems at all probable, or ever possible. Exact figures are lacking, but new leases have certainly been taken on more than 1,000,000 arres. One operator estimates that 500,000 acres have been leased in the Appalachian geosyncline alone between Parkersburg and Charleston. Exploration, both for shallow and deep-sand gas, on some of these new leases is now under way. There was little activity in oil. No special search for new pools was made and none was found, but the usual routine drilling in old pools occurred. One major gas pipe-line enterprise was undertaken and completed. Operating technology was much the same as usual. In certain localities repressuring for oil has become a matter of routine, and in others the use of acid in treating small wells in calcareous beds has been continued. No outstanding example of an important producing unit operation exists in California today where the competitive drilling drainage feature is or was entirely eliminated We need not feel, however, that the thought of unit operation had its birth in 1924, when Henry L. Doherty named and sponsored it so strongly before the American Petroleum Institute and our own organization. No man or company in California ever drilled a wildcat well without exerting every possible effort to get all of the structure, so as to control drilling and avoid competition. Overproduction did not begin in 1923, so there has always been the wish to avoid it. In this state the practice of selling acreage around a wildcat has not been followed, except possibly in rare instances. The operator drilling the wildcat knew he must pay the bill alone, so he endeavored to get the benefit of his effort by tying up all of the land around his well and by so planning his different lease obligations as to avoid as much offsetting as possible. If he failed to get all of the land, it was because someone's price was too high, some other oil man also had the same idea and already held some lands, a competitor took leases away from him while his work was still incomplete, or (as was so often the case) the hidden structure when developed did not prove to be where the wildcatter thought it would be. The last named condition often led to a forced drilling campaign by the last leases secured and thus to serious drilling drainage problems. Ownership of the Land The land situation differs a great deal in various parts of the state. In the San Joaquin Valley, all the land is surveyed into sections and townships. Railroad land grants embraced a part of the land. In the areas that were developed at an early date, as at Kern River, Coalinga, McKittrick and the Sunset-Midway field, such land as the railroad company's diligent land department had been unable to sell for a song as grazing land still remained in its ownership. It is not known when silica sand was first noticed along the north coast of Puerto Rico, but the first mention of its occurrence was made in 1922, by N. L. Britton,1 who described its presence in isolated patches extending from Loiza westward beyond Manati. Further observations were made in 1925 and 1926 by Meyerhoff,2 who extended the known occurrences still farther westward to the low hill belt in the Quebradillas limestone immediately south of Hatillo. The extraordinary purity of the sands, which in most localities exhibit no contamination from the non-siliceous materials surrounding them, was quickly appreciated, and the feasibility of utilizing them for the manufacture of glass was investigated, initially by the Committee on Mineral Resources3 and later (1936) by the Puerto Rico Recon-structionAdministration and by H. C. Ray, mining engineer of the Insular Bureau of Mines. In 1934 samples submitted to the Hazel Atlas Glass Co., of Washington, Pennsylvania, were reported to have the composition as shown in the table on column two. Appreciation of the quality of the sand prompted geological and quantitative studies of the deposits, as well as cornmercial investigations to determine the feasibility of utilizing it locally or on the mainland for the manufacture of glass containers. Distribution of the Sands The quartz sands consistently lie within the outcrop area of the Quebradillas limestone, the youngest of the Miocene formations in the Tertiary coastal plain that fringes the northern coast of the Island. Many of the deposits are closely associated with limestone outcrops, but some appear to be embedded in lagoonal sediments at some distance from rock exposures, and at least one deposit, near Dorado, has been reworked by waves and littoral currents. With this single known exception, the deposits consist of irregular, patternless patches of white sand, which have sharply defined contacts with the surrounding material. Although patches of sand are present in a 90-km. belt that is not more than 5 km. wide, extending from Loiza to Hatillo, they attain maximum size, purity and number in the north central coastal area between Dorado and Barceloneta. Fifty separate deposits have been mapped in Lago Tortuguero and to the south of it, some as small as 50 ft. in diameter but

Diffusion between gold and indium at two temperatures below the melting point of indium (155.4oC) was investigated. The major, component of the diffusion zone was determined to be AuIn2; the other, intermediate phases in the system occur in much narrower layers In order of decreasing layer width these are: Au9In4, AuIn, Au4In. Inter diffusion coefficients of the four intermediate phases and the terminal solid solutions lie in the range of 2.4 x 10-l3 to 1.8 x 10-11 sq cm per sec. WHEN two metals which do not form a continuous series of solid solutions interdiffuse, each phase in equilibrium at the diffusion temperature should appear as a separate layer in the diffusion zone. In the Au-In system, diffusion plays a significant part in many commercial applications, particularly where indium alloys are used as solders for electrical contacts with very fine gold wire, for estab- lishing electrical contact to thin metallic films, and for mounting metal-coated piezoelectric crystals. A knowledge of the number, extent, and type of phases which form at diffusion temperatures below the melting point of indium, 155.4oC,1 and the diffusion constants for the system would be useful for these practical applications. Of more basic significance, additional information on polyphase diffusion in a system not previously investigated would be gained. The phase relationships in the Au-In system were determined primarily by Kubaschewski and Weibke1 and are based on thermal, microscopic, and X-ray analysis, Fig. 1. There are five intermediate phases in the system having approximate compositions corresponding to the formulas: Au4ln (ß)—80.0 at. pet Au; Au3In (?)— 75.0 at. pet Au; Au9In4 (d)—69.2 at. pet Au; AuIn—50.0 at. pet Au; AuIn2—33.3 at. pet Au. Solid solubility of indium in gold at 700°C is reported as 12.64 at. pet and at 406°C as 10.36 at. pet. No solid solubility of gold in indium is reported.

The electrolytic zinc plant of today is foreshadowed in the patents issued to Léon Létrange of Paris in 1881 and 1883l. He proposed roasting zinc blende to make the zinc soluble in water or sulphuric acid, thus obtaining a sulphate solution. His purification was apparently that used in the lithopone work of the day. For electrolyzing he proposed anodes of carbon or lead, for cathodes zinc, copper or brass. Numerous patents by other workers were taken out in the first 10 years, most of which dealt with sulphate solutions. It is easy to presume that the formation of chlorine gas in zinc chloride electrolysis caused early emphasis on sulphate work. Lack of success with this invited further work with chloride solutions. Efficient and cheaper oxidizing agents for use in the chloride processes were more generally available. Carbon anodes could be used instead of lead anodes, which were blamed for much of the early electrolyzing troubles and remained in disfavor for many years. Carl Hoepfner received his first zinc patents in 18902. He was the most persistent of those who worked with chloride solutions and met with the largest measure of success. Hc built three plants, only one of which remained in operation. This was built in 1896 at the plant of Brunner, Mond & Co., Winnington, England, now part of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. It leached with by-product calcium chloride from the company's Solvay alkali plant and returned to it the chlorine formed in electrolyzing. The zinc plant had a capacity of 5 long tons of zinc, said to have been doubled later, and remained in operation until 1924. No commercial plant using chloride solutions has operated since then. E. A. Ashcroft experimented in the middle nineties with chloride, alkaline and sulphate solutions on materials from Broken Hill, Australia. He built a plant with a rated capacity of 10 long tons of zinc per day, at Cockle Creek, New South Wales, in 1898. This figure was never approached nor was cyclical operation achieved. The work in the plant appears to have been largely with sulphate solutions. The plant suffered from a multitude of troubles: poor roasting, gclatinous silica, liberal use of live steam in solutions to combat the gclatinous silica with considerable

THE striking alterations in the constitution and structure of cast A1-Si alloys brought about by addition of small quantities of some elements, particularly sodium, have been extensively investigated. Many theories' have also been propounded to explain this so-called lLmodification" process, but their main concern has been more to throw light on the action of sodium than to arrive at general criteria underlying this interesting as well as intriguing phenomenon. Such theories have generally dealt with one or more, but not all, factors that seem to have a direct or indirect influence on the cast structure of A1-Si alloys, e.g.., formation of ternary eutectic, removal of oxides, hydroxides, and so forth, by fluxing, morphological changes in silicon, and inhibition of growth of silicon grains through colloidal action, compound formation, preferential adsorption, or reduction of surface tension. Kim and Heine2 were the first to study the modification of A1-Si alloys in a systematic as well as comprehensive manner and to list the important characteristics of a satisfactory modifier. According to them, an important property of the modifying element is its capacity to form a stable compound with silicon in the appropriate temperature range. Other subsidiary requirements are that the element should get adequately dispersed in the melt at the inoculating temperature and also must not form stable compounds with aluminum. The alkali elements, with the exception of lithium, fulfill these requirements most satisfactorily and have been shown to be successful modifiers by these workers. Sodium is the most effective of these and seems to be in a class by itself for various reasons noted by earlier investigators.37 None of the other elements tried by Kim and Heine, viz., Mg, Ca, Cd, Zn, In, Pb, P, As, Bi, S, and Se, showed any significant modifying action. We wish to report here briefly on substantial modifications in cast eutectic A1-Si alloys brought about by some V group elements, which do not comply with the Kim-Heine requirements. The layer growth method has been used to investigate the reaction kinetics of liquid titanium and hafnium with carbon and the [liq] - [liq + TiC] and [liq] - [liq + HfC] phase boundaries at temperatures above 1800°C. The equipment and experimental procedures used in this investigation are basically identical to those described in an earlier paper' on the Zr-C reaction. Temperature control, however, was improved significantly by connecting a Latronics Colo-Ratio automatic pyrometer and a controller to the power source. The subsequent temperature variations were ±10°C; previously ±20°C was obtained using manual controls. The absolute accuracy of the pyrometer, however, must be considered to be only ±40°C.* The spectrographic analyses of the materials used in this study are listed in Table I. The isothermal reactions of titanium (1800° to 2700°C) and hafnium (2300" to 3000°C) with carbon (graphite crucibles) resulted in the formation of carbon-saturated liquid metal and layers of Tic and HfC, respectively. The thicknesses of the carbide layers, determined from metallographic measurements at 100 times, as a function of carburization time and temperature are given in Figs. 1 and 2. At each temperature, parabolic growth behavior for these reactions was observed and could be expressed as x2 =Kpt, where X is scale thickness (corrected for heating and coolingL), Kp the parabolic growth constant, and t the isothermal carburization time. Values of Kp as a function of temperature for the carbides are shown in Fig. 3 and listed in Table 11. The growth constants are expressible as: kpTiC = 0.2 exp(-61,800/RT) sq cm per sec for Tic and Kp HfC = 2.62 exp(-95,300/RT) sq cm per sec for HfC. The liquidus phase boundaries were determined from metal samples treated in graphite crucibles for different times ranging from 4 to 100 min at each of the temperatures indicated in Table 11. Metallographic examination revealed that the carbide precipitates were distributed uniformly throughout the frozen metal matrices. This is attributed to the rapid cooling rates (800°C per min) and the small difference in density between the precipitated carbide and the liquid metal.

In an earlier publication, the application of exoelectron technology to the monitoring of dry grinding in a ball mill was reported. Recently, the author has investigated the ball mill problem in more detail with the system shown in [Fig.1]. Here, some of the current generated in the ore-ball-water mixture was picked up by the metal chains and served as a measure of the rate of grinding. While the mechanism of current generation has not been completely clarified, a parallel study of electrical effects associated with rock drilling indicated that the major driving force is the zeta potential*, while oxidation of the freshly fractured material provides the remainder of the current. Both of these effects are sensitive to the exposed surface area, and it might be expected that the observed currents would provide a measure of the grinding rate. This "surface area" effect allows the measurement system to be used in any type of rock or ore grinding. Some studies with sulfide copper ore indicate higher currents than those observed with silica sand, but the overall pattern of current versus grinding rate is essentially the same. Experimental Studies The experimental system was set up as shown in [Fig. 1]. The initial studies were done with silica sand because of its availability and for comparison with the data of reference 1. The sand was sized to an average of 425 /MI (40 mesh); a typical charge consisted of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of sand, 0.85 L (0.22 gal) of tap water and 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of iron grinding balls 25.5 mm (1 in.) in diameter. For a typical "run," the mill was loaded with a fresh charge of ore and operated for periods ranging from 10-60 min. During this time, the current was measured with a Keithley 417 picoammeter and a chart recorder. At the end of the grinding period, the charge was removed and sieved to recover the 425, 300, and 212 µm (40, 50, and 70 mesh) fractions which were then drained and weighed. A fresh charge was used for each test and every attempt was made to keep the draining and weighing processes uniform.

THE writer has been unable to find much information relative to tests made to determine the effect of forging on the specific density of steel. The opinion, however, among men engaged in the business, seems to he that forging greatly compresses or consolidates the steel. While such is doubtless the case with spongy or porous steel, the following experiments indicate that there can be little or no change in the density with steel initially free from cavities: Ten ingots of basic open-hearth steel cast as shown in Fig. 1 were used in the experiments. All the specimens were 0.53 carbon with all other elements the same, the analysis being determined from drillings taken midway between the center and outside of the upper end, as shown in Fig. 2. The specimens were selected from over one thousand ingots so that the tests could be comparative for the work done in forging only, but no two of the ingots were cast in the same heat. Each ingot remained in the mold approximately 30 min., when it was removed and air-cooled. About 12 hr. later, when the temperature had been reduced to approximately that of the surrounding atmosphere, the head was discarded and the ingot heated in an oil furnace to approximately 2250° F. (1235° C). Approximately 1 min. was required to forge under the steam hammier to 1 ¼ in. (31.75 mm.), rough diameter, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. All ingots were allowed to air-cool after forging. Cylinders ½ in. (17.7 mm.) in diameter and ½ in. high were then turned from the forged and unforged parts of the ingots and numbered. The ten pairs of specimens were submitted to Louis E. Endsley, Professor of Railway Mechanical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh; A. N. Talbot, Professor of Applied Mechanics, University of Illinois; L. Z. Slater, chief chemist, Scullin Steel Co., St. Louis, Mo. No in-formation was furnished as to which specimens were forged or unforged and each laboratory used the same specimens, submitting the average of three independent determinations, a tabulation of which is shown in the accompanying table in which the laboratories are designated by

Continuous seven- and nine teen -filament close-packed silver-steel filamentary composites mere tested in tension. For purposes of comparison, the tensile behavior of the composite was predicted from the measured properties of the individual com-ponents. It was assumed that the axial strain is the same in both components and that the contribution of each component to the composite flow stress is proportional to its volume fraction. Good agreetnent was obtained between the observed and predicted tensile behavior. However, the composite elongation at fracture was about twice that observed when the individual steel wires were tested alone. Composites in which the filaments were widely spaced failed by the consecutive fracture of the filaments. In composites with closely spaced filaments, a composite instability preceded frachcre. These effects are explained in terms of a lateral restraint to the necking of the filaments which develops in the deforming composite. TWO-COMPONENT or composite materials are increasingly being developed and used as structural materials. Of all the composite geometries used, the filamentary configuration has proved to be the most successful. Polymer-bonded fiber-glas, the most common of the filamentary composites, has been investigated most extensively to date. One explanation of the behavior of fiberglas1 suggests that the load transfer between the glass fibers and the polymer matrix occurs primarily through friction. Bond separation between the fibers and the matrix is presumed to occur at very low stresses. Subsequently, only frictional bonding can provide for the transfer of load from the matrix to the fibers. The force normal to the fiber-matrix interface which gives rise to this friction is assumed to arise from the matrix shrinkage which occurs during solidification. The behavior of metallic filamentary-composite materials would be expected to differ from that of fiberglas in several significant aspects. Residual stresses resulting from differences in thermal contraction can be kept to a minimum by proper heat treatment. A strong wetted bond is formed between the two phases. In brazed joints,2 for example, the interphase bond is sufficiently strong that the weaker material will fail before separation occurs at the interface. Most metal filaments can undergo appreciable amounts of plastic deformation before failure. Failure by plastic instability or necking frequently occurs in metallic filaments, but not in glass fibers tested at room temperature. Differences between the behavior of fiberglas-polymer and metallic filamentary composites have indeed been observed in composites containing various types of metallic filaments in a silver matrix.3,4 At strains of the order of 10-2 pct, all the deformation was accommodated by the silver matrix. Hence, the strength of the composite depended only on the fiber concentration and not on the nature of the fiber. At higher strains, the strength of the composite increased when filaments with higher work-hardening rates were used. Surface slip line observations on a silver-mild steel composite that had been stretched 4 pct showed that an appreciable amount of deformation occurred in the filaments. Work on tungsten-copper filamentary composites5 has shown that the ultimate tensile strength for varying filament fractions followed a linear mixture rule. Assuming that the axial strains in both filaments and the matrix are equal, this linear mixture rule can be expressed as: The subscripts c, f, and m refer to the composite, filaments, and matrix, respectively. A and V are the area and volume fractions of each component. sc and of are the ultimate tensile strengths of the composite and the filaments. sm is the flow stress of matrix at a strain equal to the elongation at failure of the filaments. However, the tungsten filaments can undergo only a limited elongation before they fracture without an appreciable reduction in area. A composite containing more ductile filaments might indeed deviate from this linear mixture rule for the ultimate tensile strength, since filament failure by necking might be arrested by the matrix. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Specimens were prepared from 0.8 pct carbon steel piano wires of 0.015 in. initial diameter. The wires were given a thin nickel flash and a silver plate varying in thickness from 0.015 to 0.007 in., depending on the filament fraction desired. In order

Stress measurements taken at Climax, El Teniente, Henderson, Lakeshore and Urad mines indicate that the deposits cited are generally subject to an inclined stress field that can be highly anisotropic. The horizontal stresses vary significantly between deposits and exceed the measured vertical stresses at Henderson and El Teniente mines. Experience at Henderson, Lakeshore and Urad mines is used to suggest a relationship between cavability and the premining stress. In poorly fractured, high strength rock masses, high stresses can assist the caving process. In well fractured, low strength rock masses, caving is ensured by breakage along fracture planes. The relationship between ground weight and the premining stress is also investigated. Ground weight problems appear to be most related to the competence of the ground rather than the magnitude of the premining stress as supported by experience at Climax and El Teniente mines. Recent developments in block caving favor the extraction of poorly fractured, high stressed rock. Accompanying the development of these deposits are new problems such as rock bursts. These pose particular problems to mine designers in that no experience currently exists in combatting rock burst problems at block caving mines.
