T HE Tonopah Extension assay office is a two- story, concrete structure on a solid foundation of andesite, situated about 100 yd. from the company's mill, so that it will not be affected by the stamps or the tube-mills; also it will not be affected by under- ground blasting. On the second floor are the mine superintendent's office and drafting and blueprint rooms. On the ground floor are the assayer's office,' mixing room, furnace room, crusher room, chemical laboratory, parting room, store room, and change and shower room for the mine superintendent, assayers, and engineers. The crusher room is outside of the main building, and has four concrete walls, thus eliminating the jar of the crusher; it is so situated that the least possible amount of dust spreads through the main building. An 8 by 10-in. jaw crusher, which crushes to ¼ in., was made by a local foundry. Attached to the top is a small galvanized-iron hopper covered with a ¼ in. screen, on to which the sample is dumped. The fines-pass through the screen into the hopper, while the oversize is dumped into the crusher. The crushed sample and fines from the screen drop down to a set .of splits suspended from an iron rod below the crusher jaws. The small sample is caught below in a small pulp pan. The rejects drop from the splits through a 2-in. pipe on to a bucket conveyor, which dumps into a galvanized-iron hopper in an upper corner of the room. The rejects drop through a 2-in. pipe to a reject bin outside the build- ing. This bin is constructed high enough for a truck to be loaded from it by means of a chute door on the side.

Significant strides were made in the year 1948 leading to further recognition of the place of magnesium as a common commercial metal, rather than as just a premium aircraft material. One of the factors contributing to this recognition was the price stability and, in many cases, price reduction of magnesium products in 1948. In contrast to most other metals, manufacturing advances in magnesium outweighed the effects of increased labor and other costs. At the present time, many magnesium extrusions, die castings, and permanent mold castings can be purchased as cheaply as their aluminum counterparts in these forums, though competitive prices for sheet still await the inauguration of a modern tandem rolling mill for magnesium, such as has already been demonstrated.

THE Wednesday morning session was devoted entirely to the consideration of the tentative code for coal mine ventilation. A. W. Hesse is chairman of this subcommittee. E. A. Holbrook presided at the session and assisted by A. W. Hesse and George S. Rice, gave the historical background of the movement for a ventilation code. They stressed the point that this was to be an engineer's code, and that it was hoped that it might serve as a valuable guide to operating companies in securing greater efficiency as well as safety in ventilation. The discussion was continued into the afternoon session, and by adjournment the entire' code had been covered.' Many sections were referred back to the Committee for further study and several new sections were suggested. The various opinions and new ideas brought out during the discussion proved very valuable and. contributed much to the progress being made in the preparation of this code.

Less than two years ago, the, Congress, with broad bipartisan support, passed the Energy Security Act of 1980. A decade marked by ten- fold increases in world oil prices and two major interruptions in oil flows from the Middle East had ended. An all-out national commitment to transform America's vast tar sands, oil shale and coal resources into conventional fuels had begun. The national synfuels effort was to be public-private cooperation at a scale unmatched in peace time. Private industry would own and operate the synthetic fuels facilities. Government would reduce market uncertainties to acceptable levels. The potential government commitment was substantial. Up to $88 billion would be available through the Synthetic Fuels Corporation, principally in the form of contingent financing. Billions more would be spent through Department of Energy programs. Additional incentives for alternate energy development were contained in the Energy Tax Act of 1978. The Energy Security Act clearly specified national synthetic fuels production objectives: 500,000 barrels per day by 1987 -- 2 million barrels per day by 1992. Finally, said Congress, Uncle Sam was going to do something about rapidly rising oil prices, uncertainties of energy supply, and the resulting disruption to the U. S. economy. Simply put, the purpose of the Energy Security Act of 1980 was to provide government guarantees sufficient to get synthetic fuels projects off the private sector drawing boards and into commercial production. Because of their huge cost, technological uncertainty, and lengthy pay-out period, these projects were always second place to projects of smaller size, known technology and more rapid pay-out. The Energy Security Act was the legal expression of public policy to bring the free-market synfuels timetable into line with the faster paced political timetable in the interest of national energy security.

The effects of the temperature of deformation and the degvee of deformation on the annealing spectrum of a Au-Ag alloy have been determined by vesistance measurements. Specimens were deformed in torsion at 4°, 78K and room temperature up to strains nd/l of about 1.0 and were isochronally annealed. Discrete annealing stages similar to those found for pure metals were observed. Stage A occurred below room temperature; the decrease in reszstance associated with this stage increased as the temperature of deformation was lowered or the strain was increased. Stage B manifested itself as an increase in resistance; this is attributed to the restoration of short-range order promoted by vacancy or vacancy aggregate migration. At temperatures above 48S0K, recrystallization or Stage C occurred. Stages A, B, and C in the annealzng curves of this alloy may be considered to correspond to Stages II, Ill, and V, respectively, in the terminology used to describe the annealing spectrum of pure metals. ThE annealing behavior after deformation below room temperature has been thoroughly investigated on pure metals, in particular gold and copper. The occurrence of several discrete stages in the annealing spectrum of these metals has been established, but the interpretation of some of these stages in terms of specific mechanisms is still controversial.' The annealing of alloys deformed below room temperature has been the subject of only a few investigations. In the investigation reported here, a Au-Ag alloy was annealed after deformation at and below room temperature. This continues a research program on the deformation and annealing behavior of Au-Ag alloys.2-8s EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An alloy rod of composition 82.6 wt pct Au-17.4 pct Ag was reduced to wire, 0.0428 in. diam, by swaging and drawing. After a recrystallization treatment, the grain size was 0.031 mm, as obtained from the average linear intercept.7 The ends of wires about 6 in. long were flattened and sealed into short brass tubes with cold setting cement to form the grips of the torsion specimens. The equipment used for deformation has been described elsewhere.6 The specimens were deformed at room temperature, 78", and 4°K to various strains nd/l, where n is the number of turns, d the diameter of the specimen, and 1 its length between grips. The strain rate ?max was 0.1 min-' at the sur- face of the specimen except where noted otherwise. The specimens were annealed isochronally for 30 min at intervals of approximately 30°K from the temperature of deformation to approximately 800°K, except that after deformation at 4°K the lowest annealing temperature was 78°K. A potentiometric method was used to measure the resistance: all measurements were made at 78°K with the exception of some measurements at 4°K mentioned below. Data obtained with a single specimen yielded a complete annealing curve: in several cases duplicate specimens were used to confirm the reproducibility of the curves. Since the surfaces of the specimens were rough after deformation, their diameters could not be measured accurately. The resistance increments after deformation and annealing are therefore reported as percentages of the resistance of the same specimen measured after completion of the annealing, that is, after full recrystallization. The corresponding resistivity values can be calculated by obtaining the effective diameter of a deformed specimen from the ratio of its resistance after recrystallization to the true resistivity, which was determined with a smooth specimen of known dimensions. This method of calculation was used to obtain data shown in several of the figures. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The isochronal annealing curves after deformation to various strains at 4", 78K, and room temperature are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The resistance increment of the as-deformed specimens as a function of strain is shown in Fig. 4. For the specimens deformed at 4°K. values measured at 78°K are plotted with the exception of those for the as-deformed

Extra-low carbon iron sheet, when deformed and annealed, undergoes exaggerated or abnormal grain growth in the critically deformed regions of the sheet. This exaggerated pmth occurs, for low strains (3 to 6 pct), only in sheet which has a fine dispersion of precipitates in the subsurface region of the sheet and fewer and coarser precipitates in the sheet interior. These particles have been identified as manganese sulfides. Wing the anneal, grains near the surface are gvowth-inhibited by the fine particles but the grains in the interior are free to grow normally. With the additional driving force provided by the strain energy, the interior grains first grow into the small subsurface pains. Eventually, these growing grains grow completely through the sheet. Calculations of limiting grain sizes at various values of strain indicate that a volume fraction of precipitates in excess of 10-' would be required to eliminate exaggerated growth in material strained to 10 pct. OPEN-COIL annealing has made decarburization of sheet steel both efficient and economically practical. Use of such material for porcelain-enameling stock is one of many possible applications of low-carbon iron since carbon in steel is deleterious to porcelain-enameling properties.' However, the extra-low carbon iron presently available presents another problem, that of exaggerated grain growth in regions where the sheet has been deformed as by bending or stretching. In exaggerated grain growth a few grains start to absorb their neighbors and these may become very much larger than the average grains of the sheet. Other names for exaggerated grain growth are coarsening, critical grain growth, secondary recrystallization, abnormal grain growth, or discontinuous grain growth. While this grain growth does not affect the enameling qualities of the low-carbon iron sheet, their presence results in a marked reduction of tensile-yield strength in the region of the sheet containing the large grains. The loss of tensile yield strength may render the material unsuitable for many applications . This report describes the results of a study undertaken to determine the cause of the exaggerated grab growth in extra-1ow carbon iron and, if possi- ble, to prescribe practical procedures for its prevention. GENERAL THEORY The driving force for exaggerated grain growth is the grain boundary free energy. This driving force is proportional to (l/rl + l/r2) where rl and r2 are the mutually perpendicular radii of curvature of the boundary between the growing grain and the grain being consumed. Thus, the greater the difference in size between the growing grain and the matrix grains, the higher the driving force for grain growth. If, however, the matrix grains are free to grow simultaneously, the driving force for exaggerated growth will be diminished. Stability toward growth of the matrix grains may be caused by a) a strong single orientation texture (texture inhibition),' b) a dispersed second phase,3"5 c) the thickness effect,' or d) intergranular segregation.7"9 As exaggerated growth occurs when growth of the matrix grains has been slowed by the stabilizing processes mentioned above, there must be an additional factor acting to promote growth of a few of the grains to the point where they are enough larger than the matrix grains that boundary energy driving forces are sufficient to cause continued growth. For instance, at the annealing temperature, growth-inhibiting inclusions may slowly dissolve and coalesce. Eventually, a grain boundary becomes unlocked and migration occurs at the expense of neighboring grains. Or, an additional driving force may be supplied to some of the grains if the material is strained. Then, since some grains will be strained less than others, the difference in strain energy between adjacent grains may be sufficient to overcome boundary locking and allow growth of the grains with lower strain energies. In the present study, therefore, such factors as the presence or absence of dispersed phases, the nature of the exaggerated growth, and the effect of strain have been considered. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE I) Material and Processing. ONE of the earliest investigations of ground water in Florida was made in 1513 when Ponce de Leon arrived at St. Augustine in search of the Fountain of Youth. The history of the development of the water resources of the State shows that the large artesian reservoir that underlies Florida was discovered in the latter part of the last century. Part of that history is given by L. C. Johnson' who states that the first successful artesian well in Florida was drilled at St. Augustine between 1880 and 1882. After the City of Jacksonville failed to obtain a flow of artesian water at a depth of nearly 400 ft and abandoned the drilling, R. N. Ellis, City Engineer, and L. C. Johnson, using Johnson's knowledge of the geologic structure of the artesian reservoir, estimated correctly that artesian water could be obtained at a depth of about 500 ft. Thus began the development of the large artesian system in the northeastern part of the State. In 1908, the Florida Geological Survey issued its first report on the ground water of central Florida. More recent reports give the results of investigations that have been in progress in cooperation between the Florida Geological Survey and the U. S. Geological Survey since 1930. As a result, the ground-water geology and hydrology of Florida are now so well known that ground-water problems such as confronted early investigators no longer exist. However, new problems arise and new discoveries are made as the demand for more ground water increases with the development of the State. Water-Bearing Formations Descriptions of the geologic formations and a map showing their distribution at the surface are given in a recent report by Cooke.' The geologic formations that yield the ground-water supplies in Florida represent only a small part (about 1000 ft) of the total thickness of the sedimentary rocks (more than 15,000 ft) that underlie Florida. The water-bearing rocks that yield fresh water include more than two dozen formations that range in age from Eocene to recent. The Eocene formations, which consist chiefly of limestone, are the oldest and the deepest of the formations in Florida that yield fresh water to wells. In 1944, on the basis of a study of the foraminifera, the Applins -ivided the limestone of Eocene age into six formations, which are as follows, from top to bottom: Age or group Formation Jackson Ocala limestone icAvon Park limestone Claiborne -j Tallahassee limestone aLake City limestone Wilcox Salt Mountain limestone xOldsmar limestone The Ocala limestone and the underlying formations of Claiborne age, along with some of the overlying limestone of Oligocene and Miocene age, constitute the principal source of water in Florida and southeastern Georgia and generally may be regarded as forming one artesian aquifer or water-bearing unit. This aquifer is referred to in this paper as the Floridan aquifer, a name proposed by Parker.' In part of Seminole County alone more than 1000 flowing wells yield water from the Floridan aquifer. A yield of 6500 gpm, or about 9.5 million gal per day, by natural flow from a well penetrating the aquifer at Jacksonville, Florida, was observed in 1942. A yield of about 7000 gpm by natural flow was reported for a well 1390 ft deep at St. Augustine in 1887. The largest yield reported from a pumped well penetrating the aquifer is 7500 gpm, or about 10.5 million gal per day. The aquifer is also the source of some of the large springs, such as Silver Springs, whose discharge, according to measurements made by the U. S. Geological Survey, has ranged from 526 to 1350 sec-ft, or from 340 to 872 million gal per day. The top of the Ocala limestone, as represented by contours in Fig. 1, indicates in a general way the geologic structure of the formations that comprise the Floridan aquifer. The Ocala is at or near the surface in the areas represented by shading in the northwestern part of the peninsula and also in an area in western Florida adjacent to Alabama and

An investigation was conducted to determine the stress-strain behavior and tensile properties of metallic composites and to relate them to the properties of the base materials. Tungsten fibers in a copper matrix were chosen as the model sys-tem to investigate these properties. Room-temp-atzcre tensile and dynamic -modulus tests were used To meet the demand for improved structural materials, considerable effort is being directed toward the creation of composite materials. One such material under investigation is the fiber-reinforced composite, in which a ductile, relatively weak matrix is reinforced with high-strength fibers. Some work has been done on the reinforcement of metallic matrices with metallic fibers1"5 as well as with ceramic-whisker reinforcement. Summaries of much of this work have been published by Mach-lin7 and Baske~.' Work done at the Lewis Research Center of NASA-" has involved the making and testing of composites composed of a fiber, tungsten, and a matrix, copper, which were insoluble in each other. An equation was presented that showed the relation between the ultimate tensile strength of the composites and the strengths and relative volume percents of the components. This relation was verified experimentally for composites containing fibers extending the full length of the specimen as well as for composites reinforced with short-length or discontinuous fibers. Since the publication of the preliminary results,9'10 additional data have been obtained. This paper presents these data as well as analyses of the stress-strain behavior and the mechanics of deformation of uni-axially oriented, fiber-reinforced metallic composites, in which both components are mutually insoluble. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Composites were made with high-purity copper as the matrix and 3-, 5-, and 7-mil-diam tungsten wire as the reinforcing fiber. Some specimens were made in which the reinforcing fiber extended completely through the full length of the composite test section. The fibers were placed in ceramic to determine these properties. The composites were reinforced with either continuous or discontinuos tungsten fibers. The tensile properties and stress-strain behavior of composites reinforced with either type of reinforcement were similar, and in both cases the full strength of the fiber was utilized. tubes to insure axial orientation and infiltrated with copper at 2200°F for 1 hr. Composites were also made with short-length (3/8 in. long) 5-mil-diam tungsten fibers as discontinuous reinforcement and infiltrated under the same conditions. The reinforcing fibers in both cases were longitudinally oriented in the direction parallel to the tensile axis. Room-temperature tensile tests were conducted on the composites, stress-strain curves were obtained, and ultimate tensile strength and elongation were measured. Dynamic modulus of elasticity, based upon the resonant frequency induced in the flexural mode of vibration, was also determined for the composites and the components. A more detailed discussion of the experimental procedure employed in this investigation may be found in Ref. 11. RESULTS Room-temperature tensile tests were conducted on 3-, 5-, and 7-mil-diam tungsten wires which had been annealed for 1 hr at 2200°F and show the tensile strength of the wires to be 331,000, 327,000, and 290,000 psi, respectively. Since all the composites were infiltrated under these conditions, the strengths were considered to represent the strength of the fibers in the composites throughout this study. The average tensile strength of the annealed copper used as the matrix in this investigation was 27,800 psi. Results of room-temperature tensile tests on composites reinforced with 3-, 5-, or 7-mil-diam tungsten fibers are plotted as functions of composition in Fig. 1. These data represent previously reported datag,l0 as well as data more recently obtained. The line shown on each curve represents a prediction of tensile strength as a function of composition; the calculation of this line was explained in Refs. 9 and 10. A similar plot is presented in Fig. l(d) for composites reinforced with short-length, discontinuous 5-mil-diam tungsten fibers. LITERATURE data1'3 have suggested that the resolved shear stress necessary to initiate slip in a particular slip system in tungsten single crystals is strongly dependent on the tensile orientation of the crystals. This orientation dependence is contrary to the critical resolved shear stress criterion. Because the Schmid factors for slip on particular {110}( I l l), {112}(Ill), or {123}(111) slip systems in a (100) oriented tungsten crystal are virtually identical to the respective Schmid factors for a (110) oriented crystal, slip should initiate on the same system in both orientations, independent of the values of the critical resolved shear stresses. Thus, it would be expected that, for a critical resolved shear stress model to hold, the proportional-limit stress for these two orientations must be similar. The expectation of similar proportional -limit stresses has not been borne out by reported experimental observations. Rose et nl.' reported that the proportional-limit stress for crystals near the (110) orientation was 92,000 psi, approximately three times that of (100) oriented crystals (31,000 psi). Garlick and probst2 reported greater than a fourfold difference. Most recently, Beardmore and ~ull~ examined tungsten crystals with orientations along the edge of the standard stereographic triangle and showed a gradual increase in proportional-limit stress from 28,000 psi for the (100) orientation to 93,000 psi for the (110) orientation. Again, the difference was more than threefold. As has been emphasized by these investigators, the apparent gross variation of proportional-limit stress with orientation precludes any meaningful analysis of slip mechanics using a simple critical resolved shear stress relation. The purpose of the present communication is to report that, by use of refined strain-measuring techniques, the proportional-limit stresses for the (100) and (110) orientations are quite similar. Obviously, to determine accurately the value of the proportional-limit stress, which is by definition the stress at which nonlinear stress-strain behavior first occurs, the method of measuring strain must be capable of high accuracy. The investigators cited used as the measured elongation the crosshead displacement of the tensile machine. This method, however, introduces extraneous strain contributions from the load train. Because these extraneous contributions are considerable in the initial portions of loading (as has been well-documented in the literature) the proportional-limit stress measurement, dependent on the deviation of a line from linearity, can be significantly affected. During the course of a recent study, room-temperature strain was measured directly on several (100)-and (110)-oriented tensile specimens axially oriented within 5 deg of the desired direction. Each specimen was fitted with two foil strain gages mounted on opposite sides of the 0.08-in.-diam reduced section. The tensile specimens were loaded at a crosshead speed of 0.01 in. per min on an Instron Universal Testing Machine. Strain was monitored through an external bridge circuit in which the specimen strain gages comprised two arms. The bridge output was recorded against the applied load. A strain of 2 x 10"" could be readily detected by this method. Some specimens were subjected to conventional loading while the load for others was cycled between zero and continually increasing values until the first deviation from linearity was observed. The results of these methods were similar, and the stress at which nonlinear behavior occurred was considered the proportional-limit stress. The proportional-limit stresses measured in this study are approximately 5000 and 6500 psi for the ( 100) - and ( 110) -oriented crystals, respectively, a range of values almost a magnitude less than those reported previously. Representative curves are presented in Fig. 1. Because of the nature of the measurements made, the point of departure of a line from linearity is often debatable. While the load-strain curve for the (100) -oriented crystals made a relatively abrupt deviation from linearity, the curve for the (110) -oriented crystal was more gradual, so that the actual point of tangency may be at a lower load than reported. The vapor pressure of Cd in equilibrium with CdSb in the presence of excess Sb has been measured using the Knudsen effusion method over the temperature range 276° to 379°C. The free energy of formation of CdSb is given by AF° = -1.58 + 1.53 x l0-4 T, kcal per mole. The enthalpy and entropy are obtained from the temperature coefficient of the .free energy. CADMIUM and antimony have almost imperceptible mutual solid solubility but form a single stable intermediate phase, CdSb. This phase, according to Han-sen,l extends from about 49.5 at. pct to 50 at. pct Cd at 300°C and has the orthorhombic structure. The free energy of formation of CdSb can be calculated from the vapor pressure of Cd for compositions which contain less than 49 at. pct Cd. The appropriate reaction and formulae are given by Eqs. It is implicit in this calculation that the free energy only slightly changes within the narrow limits of the single phase field. Thus, the value obtained from the antimony-rich boundary is truly representative of the stoi-chiometric compound. The results reported herein are obtained from a mixture near the eutectic composition, i.e. 59 at. pct Sb. Only two previous investigations" of the free energy of formation of CdSb have been made. Both relied upon the electromotive force method, and measurements were made over relatively narrow temperature ranges which strongly influences the reliability of the values of AH and aS. EXPERIMENTAL The eutectic composition is prepared by fusing reagent grade Cd and Sb by induction heating in vacuo with the starting materials held in a graphite crucible having a threaded lid. The material obtained from the initial melt is pulverized, sealed under high vacuum in a pyrex capsule, and annealed at 420°C for two weeks. X-ray analysis"gives the following lattize parameters: a = 6.436A, b = 8.230& and c = 8.498A using Cu Ka radiation with A = 1.54056. These values are in fair agreement with the result? previously reported by Al~in:4 i.e. a = 6.471A, b = 8.253A, and c = 8.526A. Vapor pressures are measured using an apparatus which has been described elsewhere,= however, with a single important modification. Knudsen effusion cells are made of pyrex with knife-edged orifices made by grinding the convex surface of the lid on #600 emery paper. Photographs taken at known magnifications using a Leitz metallograph enable the determination of the orifice area. Numerous calibration measurements of the vapor pressure of pure Cd give close agreement with values previously reported5,= thus indicating that no significant error can be ascribed to the substitution of glass cells for metal cells used in previous work. Because the vapor pressure of Cd is reliably established and because it is difficult to obtain Clausing factors for the glass cells, the final values used for the orifice areas are calculated from the calibration measurements of the vapor pressure of pure Cd. Effusion runs are started in an atmosphere of purified helium which is quickly evacuated as soon as the cell attains thermal equilibrium. Less than one minute is necessary to obtain high vacuum after evacuation begins, and the temperature seldom varies by more than 0.5oC from the value obtained prior to pumping out the helium. RESULTS The results of this investigation along with other pertinent data are tabulated in Table I. Fig. 2 is the familiar graph of log P against T-10 K. At least mean squares analysis of the data presented in Table I yields the following equation: log1DJP = 8.790 - 6472 x T"1 [3] The deviations of the individual measurements from the values calculated with Eq. 131 are given in column six of Table I; the average deviation is 4.0% of the calculated value. Although the partial molal properties change significantly with composition within the single phase region, the integral thermodynamic value should remain relatively constant. Hence the results of the following calculations, which use the data obtained for the eutectic composition, are probably representative of the equi-atomic compound. Eq. There may be three kinds, viz.: (1) Specifications in general; (2) Standard Specifications; (3) Standard International Specifications. 1. A Specification is a document used in commerce which should clearly define the qualities of material to be supplied by the producer, the tests which shall be applied for their determination, and the methods which shall be applied for the purpose of determining that the entire product shall possess such qualities, properties and finish as are desired. The terms used in such document must be applied in accordance with their strict technical definitions as used by those most conversant with them, and the language should be of such accuracy that there can be but a single interpretation of each and every clause. FOR the purpose of the following discussion the word "research" is interpreted as including all phases of development work on methods of manufacture, metallurgical characteristics, and uses of iron and steel. Research in the iron and steel industry then includes both plant re- search and laboratory research. Since iron and steel came into being, the steel consumer's plant and the steel producer's plant have been important factors in the development of the steel industry. Good minds have always been associated with both consumer and producer plants, so marked progress was made in the industry even when these were the only types of research and development groups in action.

In the experimental work for this comparison of wet and dry grinding, it was found that the size distributions for wet grinding operations are characterized by a constant value of the distribution modulus, (a; whereas, for dry grinding the distribution modulus decreases slightly with increased size reduction. Wet grindability seems independent of the weight of material in the mill while dry grindability depends on weight. Experimental data and eqmtions for each process are presented for noncleavable isotropic material, for cleavable or material in which there is some form of internal stress, and for energy consumption. The equation ED/EW=BK-? (where ED and Ew are, respectively, energy for wet and dry grinding, k is the size modulus, and B and ? are constants) was found to give the ratio of energy. Dry grinding is generally considered to require more energy than wet grinding. Taggart' states that power consumption in wet grinding ranges from 60 to 90 pct of that required for dry grinding. Bond' states that dry grinding requires one third more power than wet grinding. It is interesting that Rose and Sullivan' note this same difference in power required for wet and dry grinding, but they state that on purely mechanical grounds it is difficult to see any great difference in fundamental principles between wet and dry milling, since dry milling may be regarded as wet milling with a fluid of low viscosity (i.e., air vs water). Yet it must be the viscosity of the fluid that is responsible for the differences between wet and dry grinding. Probably the most comprehensive investigation comparing wet and dry grinding has been that made by Coghill and Devaney. They compared the grind-ability of both chert and dolomite in a 19x36-in. batch ball mill under both wet and dry conditions. In these tests the weight of ore in the mill was varied from 35 to 200 lb and each grinding test was carried out for such period of time that the amount of -200-mesh material in the product was essentially the same for each test with a given material. Cog-hill and DeVaney's data for the grindability of dolomite, which are reproduced in Fig. 1, show that a comparison between wet and dry grinding is com- plex. The comminution of a material by a wet grinding method is characterized by a constant grindability over a wide range of mill loadings. Since grindability is the weight of material comminuted per unit of energy expended, it is equivalent to (w)/ (p)(t), where W is the weight of material being ground, P is the power, and t is the grinding time. In the case of wet grinding, the grindability of dolomite in the Coghill and DeVaney experiments was 0.546 * 0.009 ton per hp-hr when the load of dolomite in the mill ranged from 50 to 200 lb. On the other hand, for dry grinding no such simple relationship was found to exist between power, time, and weight of material in the mill. That calcium will activate quartz for flotation with anionic collectors such as soaps has been known for a number of years,1 2 3 and the method has been applied to the concentration of various iron ore 4 5 6 as well as to other materials. Clemmer gives the permissible pH range for the activation of quartz by calcium as between 9.5 and 12.5 with an optimum value of 11.0, and Hertzog7 has determined the calcium abstraction of iron ores and of Ottawa sand, but otherwise little quantitative data are available. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine those conditions under which dilute solutions of calcium chloride will activate quartz for anionic flotation and to determine the amount of calcium ion adsorbed by quartz. Those variables, the influence of which was primary, such as calcium, sodium, and hydrogen ion concentrations, were studied. Other factors which influenced the results are discussed in the description of the experiments. Three different experimental methods were used to determine the activation of the quartz. The first method was to treat a sample of ground, deslimed quartz with solutions of calcium chloride and sodium hydroxide, and to determine the calcium adsorbed by chemical analysis of the solution. THE Committee-on Production Control, at its meeting held during the last annual session in February, 1930, evidenced great interest in problems of stabilization affecting all mineral industries. . No immediate program of activity for the Committee as a- unit was decided on, however,, and efforts during the past pear have consisted lirgely of further stressing the economic aspects of mineral production and of the action by committee members, :.serving in their individual capacities, in sponsoring constructive changes, in specific, industries. Of greatest interest to the general subject of production control in 1930 was the very definite advance toward better coordination of demand and supply in the petroleum industry. Furthermore, since opinion both within and without the oil industry now favors a constructive program, and with a gradual change in legal precedents, it seems not unreasonable to expect greater progress in the near future.

CHARLES H. FULTON, chairman, presided at the first session of the Mineral Industry Education Division on Wednesday morning. Reporting for the program committee, Edward Steidle, its chairman, pointed out that its function was not to arrange programs for meetings but to plan a program for the Division to follow in the development of its activities. This was appropriately followed by presentation and discussion of his paper, "Basic Trends in Mineral Industries Education," which, being available in printed form, was only presented in oral abstract. Jay A. Carpenter submitted interesting written discussion that was read, in his absence, by A. M. Smith. Most of the morning was devoted to the discussion of the paper, which was too extensive and ranged too widely to attempt to report in much detail. H. T. Mann, H. P. Hammond, Cadwallader Evans, C. H. Fulton, T. T. Read, D. F. McFarland and P. B. Bucky joined in the discussion, Mr. Hammond making a plea for more unification in mineral industry education, saying that in the study he made for the Society for Promotion of Engineering Education about 35 different curricula preparatory to work in the mineral industry were discovered to exist. He felt that most of the needs of the mining industry could he met by men who had had four years of engineering training of good enough basic quality to permit them to advance along special lines. However, there was apparently a growing demand, as reflected by the increasing number of candidates for the Master's degree in engineering, for men with more thorough training in the fundamentals.

For the past three strenuous years you have contributed wholeheartedly to meeting the problems of increased production. You have conducted scientific and technical investigations and research, recommended experiments. and gathered all the available and valuable information possible to gain the desired objectives. You have had many obstacles and difficulties to overcome. In the early days of your organization, there was some lack of co-operation from the industry itself-perhaps, for example, some failure to recognize the mutual advantages of free exchange of experiences and information. But regardless of any hindrances, you have made many and valuable contribution which have tended to make iron and steel manufacture leas of an art and more of a science.

AS most of you probably know, Australia has had many strikes. The two places that had the worst reputation were the Broken Hill mines and Port Pirie, where the smelter was located. About four or five years ago, the smelter changed hands. The new proprietors - immediately endeavored to get on better terms with the men and made such progress in that respect that, the men came to them and said, "There is no use giving us any more money. You have just raised our pay one- bob a day, but the store-keeper and the boarding-house keeper have raised their prices. The boarding housekeeper raised our board three bob a week and the storekeeper took the rest of it and we are no better off." Learning that what the men needed most was firewood wood the company bought the wood on a tract of ground across Spencer's Gulf and- sent men over to cut it. The wood was brought to the works and given to a man to cut up. He thought he had an easy job and loafed, but when the committee representing the men discovered that his loafing added to the cost of 'the wood, it promptly disciplined him and made -him work as he had never worked before. The next question that arose was the distribution of the wood. The committee got bids from several cartmen whose prices varied from about two to five shillings. It gave the work to the next to the lowest bidder. The fact that if delivering the wood cost more, the user would have to pay for it, was an entirely new idea to the men.
