The work suggests an approach to the problem of optimally planning the drilling and development of gas fields. The approach is based on systems analysis and allows a joint optimal choice of the total number of wells in the field, their spacing in the reservoir, the diameter of production tubing, drilling dynamics, the number and spacing of drilling platforms and well pattern schemes for each plat- form as well. The optimal solution satisfies the set of technical- economical requirements and provides a minimum value of discounted total expenditures (capital costs plus operating costs). A mathematical model of the problem is presented. This work represents an extension of the authors&apos; previous investigations that formulated and solved problems of optimal drilling of oil and gas deposits by directional wells [1] and problems of optimal control of the number of active wells in multi-reservoir oil and gas fields [2], [3]. For construction of the mathematical model we choose a range (Nmin, Nmax) of possible values of the total number of wells, N, which should be drilled in the deposit. Here Nmin, Nmax are minimum and maximum numbers of wells correspondingly, that should be drilled into the reservoir. N[€](Nmin = N1, ... N[o], ..., Nm = Nmax). For simplicity a one-reservoir gas field is considered. It is assumed that: (a) wells are spaced in the reservoir uniformly, (b) there is a certain algorithm providing a uniform spacing of the given number N[o] ([0]=l, . . . , m) of wells in the reservoir, (c) the diameters of the production tubing for all the wells are the same. The relation Qz (x), i.e. the dependence of the cumulative output of gas from the cumulative "well-years" of operations is constructed for each diameter dZ from the given range of diameters d1< ...< dr.

The formula very frequently used for computing the economical size of pipe to transmit compressed air is that of D&apos;Arey, as follows: D = cV w1l Where, D = the volume of compressed air delivered in cubic feet per minute, at the final pressure. c = an experimental coefficient determined for the various sizes of pipe, d = the diameter of the pipe in inches. 1 = the length of the pipe in feet. p, = the initial gauge-pressure in pounds per square inch, p2 = the final gauge-preesure in pounds per square inch. w1 = the density of the air, or the weight in pounds per cubic foot at the initial pressure, p1. The most common case is that in which the given quantities are: the quantity of air required, the length of the pipe, and the initial pressure. The method of solution is to assume a pressure-loss and to compute the remaining factor, cd5, thus giving the size of pipe corresponding to the assumed loss of pressure. It is always desirable to try two or more pressure-drops, in order to find the combination that is most satisfactory, since often a small change in the size of pipe will reduce or increase the loss of pressure several pounds. An alternative method is to assume a size of pipe and calculate the corresponding pressure-drop. The ore deposits at Firmeza have been worked continuously since 1884; those at Daiquiri since 1895. It is surprising, therefore, that they have not been the object of careful geologic study until quite recently. It is true that considerable attention was paid to these deposits by A. C. Spencer, in 1901, in the report on the geology of Cuba, by Hayes, Vaughan, and Spencer,l but this was only incidental to a hasty general reconnaissance of the Island. As far as the Daiquiri deposits are concerned, this gap has been filled by the appearance of the two papers by Prof. James F. Kemp2 and by Prof. Waldemar Lind-gren and Clyde P. Ross respectively.3 Max Roesler, first holder of the Emmons fellowship, made a detailed study of the Firmeza deposits during the past summer, so that soon we can expect a full description of them. Consequently, there is no, demand at the present time for a description of the deposits from other sources, and that is not the purpose of this paper. The papers on Daiquiri, however, leave unsolved problems in regard to the age of the rocks of the district and certain phases of the genesis of the deposits, and it is with the hope of aiding in the solution of some of these problems that this contribution is offered. Kemp, and Lindgren and Ross agree in assigning these deposits to the type of contact metamorphic deposits. They disagree in part on the question of their localization. The deposits occur in an extensive area of diorite which includes numerous blocks of limestone, and sometimes are found in the contact zones between these blocks and the diorite, and in other instances are completely enveloped in the diorite, showing no apparent connection with the limestone. THE September issue of MINING AND METALLURGY might almost have served as a review of the advances in the metallurgy of gold during the current year. In addition to a scholarly article by F. W. Bradley, there were able descriptions by W. W. Bradley and W. F. Boericke of the methods followed in California and in Ontario. Considered together, the two last-named articles indicate the many possible combinations of flotation with one or more of the older processes. This, the prominence of flotation as an aid in the beneficiation of gold ores, is probably the most striking of the year&apos;s developments. It would perhaps be nearer the fact to say that the year has not been marked by the gold metallurgists&apos; discovery of the flotation process, but rather by the flotation merchandizers&apos; discovery of gold metallurgy. I say this because native gold was floated successfully more than fifteen years ago, and a reference to these results was published six years ago.

SILICOSIS is a term known to almost everyone today. Yet, in spite of a great deal of study, much is still to be learned regarding the disease. Government organizations are still continuing their investigations, begun near Joplin, Mo., 25 years ago. Work is also being done in several universities, as Harvard, Pennsylvania, Rochester, and Toronto, and at least two private organizations, the Air Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc., and the Saranac Laboratories for the Study of Tuberculosis, devote most of their time to this subject. Similar studies have been and are being made in many other countries.

F. W. Matthiessen, who, with E. C. Hegeler, of La Salle, was one of the creators of the zinc industry in the-United States, was born in Altona, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, Mar. 5, 1835. He was one of a family of remarkable brothers, two of whom were long absociated in this country with the sugar and glucose industry. Mr. Matthiessen was educated at Freiberg, and came to this country in 1857 with Mr. E. C. Hegeler, after having, in company with that gentleman, visited the mining districts of Germany, Belgium, and England. They first went to Friedensville, near Bethlehem, Lehigh County, Penn., wherc attempts had already been made to produce zinc from the ore deposits found in that place. The ore was a he silicate but all attempts to extract zinc from it had failed. Mr. Matthiessen and Mr. Hegclcr were successful, but declined to invest their money in the zinc industry at Bethlehem because 01 certain local conditions. Hearing of the discovery of zinc -ore in the West, they visited both Wisconsin and Missouri and thought of settling in the coal region of East St. Louis. Finally La Salle, as being near to the Wisconsin fields and having much coal, was selected ae the site of the new smelting company, and on Dec. 24, 1858, the first shovelful of dirt was turned for the buildings of the new industry. The Civil War at first interfered with the manufacture of zinc, but afterward a lively demand for the metal arose and the future success of the institution was established. A large rolling mill was added in 1866, and in 1881 the manufacture of sulfuric acid as a byproduct was begun. Mr. Matthiessen also developed the Western Clock hlanufacturing Co. of La Salle, which manufactures the Big Ben alarm clock, from a small plant having 25 men to the present large institution which employs some 2000 workers. Mr. Matthiessen&apos;s affiliations with other metal industriefi have been numerous. But the contributions of the great zinc manufacturer to the causes of philanthropy and education have made his name known throughout the country, beyond industrial circles. He has given to the city of La Salle probably a sum total of $500,000 in various benefactions. Among the objects of his philanthropy were the La Salle-Peru Township High School, which he has made a model institution of secondary education for the entire United States; also the Tri-City Hygienic Institute of La Salle, Peru, and Oglesby, Ill., which he endowed for $200,000 This Hygienic Institute, which is unique in the United States, has a traincd staff of health officers, bacteriological laboratory, medical library, infant welfare station, milk station, free dental clinic, school nurse, and isolation hospital. Mr. Matthiessen was elected mayor of the City of La Salle three times and gave generously to the municipality of which he was the head. He also saved for the people of Illinois one of the great scenic districts of the state, Deer Park, with its cafions and natural beauties, which he con-verted into a model scenic resort, and the proceeds of which he gave to the charities of the Tri-Cities in which he lived. He died on Feb. 11, 1918.

"The mountains of Utah contain one of the largest deposits of high grade bituminous coal in the world. According to the United States Geological Survey, there are 13,130 square miles of land known to contain workable coal, and these extensive fields contain 196,000,000,000 tons of coal. More remarkable than the extent of the coal fields is the thickness of the coal beds. Over three-fourths of the output of coal in Utah is recovered from beds ranging from 8 to 17 feet in thickness, as compared to one-eighth of the output of the entire country from such beds. In 1917, Utah mined one-third of its coal from seams at least 16 feet thick, compared to one-half of one per cent of the total bituminous output of the country from like seams.Coal at Wales, in Sanpete County, and in the vicinity of Coalville, Utah, was, it is reported, the first discovered by white men in the state. Wales claims the distinction of having produced the first coal mined in Utah. Two men, who had been coal miners in Wales, learned of the coal from an old Indian chief who called it ""rock that would burn."" In 1857, the town of Wales was founded and coal mined, and in 1858 some coke was manufactured and hauled by ox team to Salt Lake City. South of Wales is Castle Valley, in Wasatch Plateau field. From 50 to 60 miles of the Old Spanish Trail from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Monterey, California, lies in Castle Valley. The coal in this field may or may not have been known at the time the trail was used extensively. The first published reference to this coal, however, was made by a party of the Corps of Topographic Engineers in their journal for October 11, 1853.After the completion of the Union Pacific railroad in 1869, mining on a commercial scale was attempted. In 1876 the Utah and Pleasant Valley railroad commenced operations between Scofield, in Carbon county, and Springville, Utah county, and following the year 1878, when the Rio Grande Western railway began construction through the Carbon county field, development increased until in 1900, when large smelters commenced operations in Salt Lake valley and gave coal mining in Utah an impetus that first carried it to an annual output of a million tons. During the past fifteen years many new mines have been opened, and with the construction of the Utah railway, an exclusive coal road, from the properties of the United States Fuel company in Carbon and Emery counties to connect with the Union Pacific system at Provo, the state reached a maximum production of 6,005, l 99 tons in 1920."

AT the beginning of 1944 it was expected that the production of metallic zinc in the United States from domestic and foreign concentrates would exceed the 1943 figure though domestic production of concentrates was expected to drop below the 1943 rate, mostly in the Tri-State area. Imports of concentrates were estimated to more than take care of such deficiency. North American concentrate production, available for import to the United States or elsewhere during the year, was estimated at over 200,000 tons recoverable zinc content; South American at about 65,000 tons; Australian at about 50,000 tons. Production of both concentrates and metal in the United States, however, did drop, attributable in considerable part to man-power shortage in the industry. However production exceeded consumption, which fell off, and stocks of metal increased. These stocks have increased since the middle of 1942 but production and consumption are coming nearer to a balance. The A, B, and C premiums, which have played an important part in keeping up domestic production of concentrates, extend only to the middle of 1945 by present legislation. In the present note we present thermal-analysis data for the liquidus curve from 0 to 76 at. pct Se and for the selenium-rich monotectic reaction in the Pb-Se system. We have previously reported that no expey-imental eviderzce was found for a lead-rich monotectic reaction, at -860°C with a monotectic composition of -20.5 at. pct Se, as found by Nozato and Igaki.&apos; Our additional data substantiated this earlier finding and extended the composition range studied. The alloys were prepared from semiconductor -grade lead and selenium purchased from the American Smelting and Refining Co. Both elements were 99.999+ wt pct pure as determined by the supplier. The impurities for lead were Fe (1 ppm) and Cu & ppm) while for selenium the impurities were Cu (< 1 ppm), As (< 1 ppm), Te (1 ppm), and C1 (<1 ppm). The general procedures used for thermal analysis were those specified by the National Bureau of Standards. A Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple calibrated against the freezing points of zinc and copper purchased from the National Bureau of Standards and antimony (99.985 pct pure) purchased from A. D. Mackay, New York, was used for all the thermal analysis. The thermocouple electromotive force was measured with a Rubicon Type B potentiometer used in conjunction with a galvanometer with a sensitivity of 0.5 pV (mm) -&apos;. The absolute accuracy of this thermal-analysis system was *0.5"C. One-hundred-gram alloys of the desired composition were sealed in quartz crucibles, with a central thermocouple well, at a pressure of less than 10"1 Torr. The alloys were initially heated well above the liquidus curve and shaken vigorously to insure homogeneity. Cooling curves were then taken by the direct method at cooling rates ranging from -0.5" to 1.5"C (min)-&apos;. The phase diagram from 0 to 76 at. pct Se as determined by direct thermal analysis is shown in Fig. l.* An extrapolation of the selenium-rich portion of the liquidus curve to the monotectic reaction isotherm (678.3"C) gave a value of 76.1 at. pct Se for the monotectic composition. A tabulation of all the thermal-analysis data is given in Table I. As we previously reported no experimental evidence was found Fig. l—The partial Pb-Se phase diagram from 0 to 76 at. pct Se as determined by direct thermal analysis. For the sake of clarity the points for the 49.00 and 49.16 at. pct Se alloys were not drawn on this phase diagram, see Table I. for the lead-rich monotectic reaction found by Nozato and Igaki.&apos; This result was further substantiated by the fact that none of twelve lead-rich alloys, see Table I, examined for this monotectic reaction exhibited a thermal arrest in the temperature range (849" to 863°C) cited by Nozato and Igaki for the lead-rich monotectic reaction. Hence, our results tend to support the earlier qualitative work of ~elabon&apos; and Friedrich and ~eroux" in the 0 to 50 at. pct portion of the phase diagram, though the selenium-rich monotectic composition and reaction isotherm temperature were in agreement with the approximate values (75 at. pct Se and 672" to 680°C) given by Nozato and ~~aki. &apos;

AN ounce of prevention is worth A a pound of cure&apos; is an old proverb that has sometimes been forgotten in programs having to do with the health of workmen. Realization of the truth of this maxim is increasing, however, and today the iron-mining industry, with which I am particularly concerned, is becoming more alive to the prevention of illness and the conservation of health, thus decreasing the need for treatment after diagnosis has established its necessity. The healthy workman is the happy, efficient workman, and new programs tending to make him more health-minded are being put into operation. Preventive medicine is less costly than corrective medicine, to say nothing of the better results obtained. Periodic physical examinations, with close follow-up attention when required, have reduced the time lost because of illness, workmen&apos;s compensation costs, and group-insurance benefits for nonindustrial disabilities.

INTRODUCTION This part contains field case studies of typical mishaps, accidents, equipment damage or post installation failures resulting from mistakes in design, manufacturing and construction, as well as improper storage, handling and installation procedures of the equipment covered in Part 1. GENERAL Certain mistakes are repeated and common rules violated on almost all industrial equipment installations, with the inevitable consequences of additional cost, construction delays and aggravation of all parties involved. The most common failures are in the following areas: Cleanliness of all components during installation and later in operation. Adherance to manufacturer&apos; s recommendations and tolerances for equipment installation. Comprehensive, properly identified installation and maintenance records. Handling of the components. Adequate tooling and auxiliary equipment in working order. An inoperable hydraulic power unit for torque wrench or for jacking of the mill, or faulty crane can be a very costly proposition. A special area in comminution circuits are wear components. Apart from the mill liners, the wear components such as, feed chutes, rock boxes, mill trunnion liners, discharge sumps, etc. are designed to the best theoretical configuration, based on experiences in similar installations. However, each process is different to a various degree, mainly because of various types of ores and grinding requirements. Consequently the first generation of wear components is very seldom the ideal one. Based on operational experience, the shape and material of wear components should be modified, until the optimum, most economical design is achieved. SHIPPING AND STORAGE Considerable damage to the equipment can be done by careless packing, shipping or storage.

THE Star shaft is near the north boundary of the group of mining claims belonging to the Ground Hog Unit of the American Smelting and Refining Co., near Vanadium, N. Mex. The shaft bins and surface plant are served by a siding from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad, and this factor of railroad transportation influenced the choice of site. This paper describes the shaft sinking only, and does not cover the surface plant or other parts of the mine or its equipment. Experience with this shaft seems of interest because of the mechanical mucking, good rate of progress, and the costs obtained at the present level of labor and material costs. The shaft has four compartments, as shown in fig. 1. Equipment: Riddell Mucker: The mucking was done by a clamshell bucket and a Riddell mucker, which, as in other shafts sunk with this machine, consisted of a carriage mounted on axles with double flanged wheels that traveled back and forth on a swinging track, parallel to the long axis of the shaft (fig. 2 to 6). Three air motors were mounted on the carriage; one hoisted the clam, one operated the bucket opening and closing device, and the third moved the carriage along the track. The carriage was designed with guide shoes and could be hoisted to the surface in either skip compartment without trouble (fig. 4). During blasting operations the clam was tied on the rails and the carriage was hoisted up a few sets to protect it from flying rock. No attempt was made to hoist the carriage and clam together lest the clam catch in the timbers. The track on which the carriage operated was built of extra heavy 6 in. pipe with 1x2 in. strap welded on top for rails. A 1/2x4 in. angle was welded on the bottom of the 6 in. pipe with a 1 in. round rod welded in the angle for a filler and additional strength. The end or cross pieces of the track which kept the track to gauge, were also made of reinforced, heavy 6 in. pipe and were bolted to the long members on which the carriage traveled (fig. 2 and 3). This section of track was used, instead of heavy railroad rails, for two reasons: (1) this section would bend before it snapped and was much safer for the men in the bottom; and (2) it was a better blasting shield, and protected the timbers better, in fact, only five wall plates were broken by blasting in 1926 ft of shaft, although 150 to 225 lb of 40 pct powder was loaded per round, depending on the ground conditions. The swinging track was supported by four 5/s in. hoisting cables anchored to the end plates. There were also four safety cables fastened two to three sets above the carriage, which would catch the carriage if one of the supporting cables should fail for any reason (fig. 7). Clamshell Buckets: Two clams were used, each of 3/s yard capacity, both manufactured by Blaw Knox, Nos. 662 and 663. The No. 663 clam was 4 in. wider and 5 in. shorter than the No. 662, but seemed to dig and load more satisfactorily. It was easier to hoist and lower when it came up for repair. Molybdenite mineralization occurs in the hood zone of the Questa mine aplite-porphyry intrusive, one of the three sil ica-rich intrusive5 occurring along the east-west trending Red River Trench that crosses the northerly trending Sangre de Cristo Mountains in north-central New Mexico. The Trench is located immediately north of the circular Gold Hill positive block between the Red River and Cabresto Creek drainages. The aplite-porphyry bodies intruded a mid-Tertiary volcanic section consisting of lower andesites, overlain by latites and rhyolites. They occur largely in the andesites and were emplaced mainly by metasomatism rather than by sloping. Hydrothermal alteration occurs both as blanket propylitization in the volcanics and sericitization and kaolinization in the porphyries and as halo-type alteration outward from veins and shear zones resulting in strong biotization in the volcanics and sericitization and kaolinization in the aplitic rocks. Mineralization consists of: ( 1) molybdenite- quartz veinlets; (2) banded molybdenite, quartz veins frequently with biotite and potash feldspar along the walls and occasionally with minor lead, zinc, and copper sulfides and with fluorite and carbonates when again reopened; ( 3) high grade molybdenite locally along shear zones; and ( 4) molybdenite paint along joint and fracture surfaces. The mineralization was associated with faulting that resulted from numerous periods of gravity adjustment along the Trench and was controlled by the major shear systems that trend northeast, east-west and north-south to northwest. Molybdenite has been well oxidized in nearsurface exposures to ferrimolybdite and the molybdenum-bearing ferric hydroxide, akaganeite. The oxidation of the abundant pyrite within the veins and shear zones and of the alteration pyrite in the volcanics resulted in a low pH environment under which the acid molybdate ion released by oxidation was fixed either in the ferrimolybdite or the akaganeite molecule in the veins and shear zones or in the soils. Little has been lost in the runoff.

DURING the past year a survey was conducted by the Committee on the Promotion of Student Interest in Coal Mining to determine whether the program as laid down in past years was operating effectively. It is a source of satisfaction and pleasure to be able to report considerable headway among operating companies in putting cooperative scholarship plans into operation. In previous committee reports the pioneer work along this line by Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., has been cited. That Company now has in its employ, in responsible positions, three men who received their education under such scholarship plans. One student under a similar plan is now studying at the Colorado School of Mines.

To comply with the California Mine Safety Orders pertaining to transportation of mine workers over mine railroads, the management of the New Idria mine in San Benito County, Calif., designed special man-cars. The new regulations, dated October 1958, make it mandatory for mine man-cars to be designed for carrying five or more men to and from the mine workings. At the New Idria mine, largest single producer of mercury in the U.S., each shift normally employs about 70 men. However, with the possibility of a future increase in the work force, seven man-cars were constructed with a total carrying capacity of 84 men. The general design of the mine man-cars was dictated by safety regulations plus the physical characteristics of the mine-low headroom, limited side clearance in haulageways, and track irregularities due to ground swells. The cars measure 10 ft long, 44 in. wide, and 50 in. high and were built at an average cost of $450 per car. All assembly work was done at the mine site.

THE investigation of the phase relations of high-purity aluminum-base alloys is a part of the fundamental research program of the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America. The results of a number of binary and ternary systems have previously been published in the transactions of this society. The aluminum end of the binary aluminum-titanium system has been studied. This system has received relatively little attention. To the authors&apos; knowledge, there are two previous papers on this subject. E. van Erckelens1 determined the constitutional diagram reproduced in Fig. 1. .According, to this diagram, the liquids represents the separation of TiAl4 (Ti = 30.7 per cent.). He concluded that this is the composition of the compound, because in his work the eutectic horizontal terminated at 30.7 per cent. titanium and the metallographic examination of a sample of this composition revealed only one phase. According to the constitutional diagram developed by W. Manchot and A. Leber,2 reproduced in Fig. 2 from data given in their article, the liquidus represents the separation of the compound TiAl3 (Ti = 37.2 per cent. ). The composition of the compound was derived in a manner similar to that utilized by van Erckelens. Moreover, Manchot and Leber confirmed the composition of the compound by analysis of the constituent left as a residue after dissolving the alloys in weak sodium hydroxide solution. Although these are the only publications describing the constitution of the system, other investigators have studied the composition of the titanium compound. L. Wöhler3 says that there is a compound TiAl3 which was later confirmed by W. Manchot and P. Richter4 and by

As the reservoir rises behind an arch dam, it presses the arch into the canyon walls and valley floor. To compute the stresses, deflections, and arch reactions, it is necessary to know how much the rock deforms under the combined loads of gravity, temperature, and water. Under sustained loading for a period of time, the rock continues to deform or "creep" slightly, causing changes in the stresses and shape of the arch. Under reduced loading, the elastic arch tends to resume its unstrained position and it is important to know that the rock will follow it and maintain tight contact along the abutment. It is, therefore, important to know the "set" characteristic of the rock. Past attempts to define load-deformation properties of rock, including creep and set, have largely l been limited to laboratory test of intact cores and in-situ jacking test utilizing bearing plates 2 to 3 ft in diam. In both cases, a uniaxial load has been applied to a volume of rock too small to fully reflect the influence of cracks, joint systems, foliation, and other inherent weaknesses within the rock mass. This chapter describes a large radial jacking test which more nearly duplicates the action of an arch dam by penetrating the load deep into the rock mass, bringing into play more of the factors which contribute to prototype deformation. Results obtained from the large radial test are compared with those from smaller uniaxial test. The object of this paper is to enlarge the field of settling velocities treated by me in my former papers, Close Sizing Before Jigging, and Sorting Before Sizing.&apos; There seemed need of work both on coarser and on finer sizes. Messrs. A. Sidney Warren and M. L. Nagel undertook the investigation for the coarser sizes, from 12.85 mm. down to 2.05 mm. diameter. Their work, because of the closer spacing and because of the increased number of observations and consequent stronger averages, called for a revision of the former work. Messrs. G. A. Barnaby and Ralph Hayden undertook this part of the work, from 2.49 mm. down to 0.28 mm., which is near the limit of sifting. Their work covers the ground much more minutely and comprehensively than the former papers. There remained to be covered the portion of the field too fine for investigation with the sieves. This part, covering the range of grains from 0.48 to 0.03 mm., was undertaken by Mr. E. S. Bardwell. For it he used the elutriation method. 11. The First, or Coarsest, Section of the Field. The first desideratum in this investigation was a series of sieves for sizing the sands preparatory to making the tests. It became necessary, therefore, to decide on a sieve-scale for this purpose. A sieve-scale is a series of sieves in which the dimensions of the holes of the successive members form a series increasing by a definite ratio. Numerous laboratory tests and field measurements conducted by different persons have indicated that most mine rocks behave viscoelastically rather than elastically. Hence, for an accurate and realistic design of underground structure, the time factor should be taken into account, and the theory of viscoelasticity can be used. By considering the time factor, the time-safe-strength may be used for economical design instead of liberal safety factors with design based on the elasticity theory. The deflection and moment distributions on an elastic roof slab resting on elastic pillars have already been studied.l In this chapter, the stress- strain analysis for a viscoelastic mine roof resting on pillars of the same material or on supports of different material is first considered theoretically. Viscoelastic solutions for deflections, moments, and shears are de- rived from the elastic plate theory on the basis of the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle. The Laplace transformation technique is employed as the operational method in the mathematical treatment. The roof slab materials are represented by four different rheological models and four different loading histories are considered. The method of finite difference equations is employed for solving the partial differential equations, using FORTRAN programs to calculate roof deflections, moments, and shears. Numerical examples are given for one of the four models under two of the four loading histories with regular and staggered pillar patterns. The results are discussed in terms of the variance with time of deflections, moments, and shears as well as their variation in space due to the dimensions and configuration of the structure system. The investigation of the phase relations of high-purity aluminum-base alloys is a part of the fundamental research program of the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America. The results of a number of binary and ternary systems have previously been published in the Transactions of this society. The aluminum end of the binary aluminum-titanium system has been studied. This system has received relatively little attention. To the authors&apos; knowledge, there are two previous papers on this subject. E. van Erckelensl determined the constitutional diagram reproduced in Fig. 1. According to this diagram, the liquidus represents the separation of TiA14, (Ti = 30.7 per cent.). He concluded that this is the composition of the compound, because in his work the eutectic horizontal terminated at 30.7 per cent. titanium and the metallographic examinalion of a sample of this composition revealed only one phase. According to the constitutional diagram developed by W. Manchot and A. Leber,² reproduced in Fig. 2 from data given in their article, the liquidus represents the separation of the compound TiA13 (Ti = 37.2 per cent. ). The composition of the compound was derived in a manner similar to that utilized by van Erckelens. Moreover, Manchot and Leber confirmed the composition of the compound by analysis of the constituent left as a residue after dissolving the alloys in weak sodium hydroxide solution. Although these are the only publications describing the constitution of the system, other investigators have studied the composition of the titanium compound. L.
