IN THE early period of steelmaking, ingot structure and segregation presented no difficult problems. Crucible melting required very small ingots which, if properly deoxidized, gave little segregation, and a small inserted hot top prevented pipe. As larger ingots were poured [ ] from Bessemer and open-hearth furnaces, segregation, piping, and gas evolution became increasingly important. The first studies of solidification were made by Gathmann (l) and the Brearley's (2) who used stearine to show the effects of shrinkage and mold shape. Figure 78 shows a series of stearine ingots at various stages of solidification. These studies indicated that the liquid solidifies at a nearly uniform rate, starting at the walls and bottom of the mold and progressing inward, and demonstrated the formation of secondary pipe in big-end-down molds. Equilibria involving Cu-Pt alloys, copper oxides, and atmospheres of known ox2gen pressures have been determined at 1000' and 1200 C. The data obtained have been used to calculate activity-composition relations in the alloys. A moderate negative deviation from ideality is found. At high copper concentrations, the results of the present study are in good agreement with those of previous investigators, whereas at low copper concentrations the activities obtained in this investigation are slightly higher than those reported previously. The present study is part of a research program dealing with the determination of phase relations and thermodynamic properties of copper-containing systems at high temperatures. The information available for such systems is very scanty, particularly for copper oxides and their combinations with other oxide components. Platinum is commonly used as a container in studies of oxide equilibria. To evaluate quantitatively the extent of reaction between the oxide and the container, a knowledge of activity-composition relations in Cu-Pt alloys is necessary. Such data are not available for Cu-Pt alloys in the temperature range of particular interest in the present research program, and particularly for alloys low in copper. Studies of various aspects of the systems Cu-Pt and Cu-0 have been reported in previous literature. The system Cu-Pt is known1 to form a continuous solid-solution series above 812.C, whereas ordered phases are present in certain composition ranges at lower temperatures. Thermodynamic data for the system have been reviewed by Hultgren et al.,' who presented free energies of mixing at 65Oo C, mainly derived from electromotive force cell measurements by Weibke and Matthes.3 Enthalpies of mixing at 640°C have been obtained by Oriani and Murphy4 with liquid tin calorime-try. Their results differ considerably from those derived from the temperature dependence of the data of Weibke and Matthes. Thermodynamic data for the disordered alloys have been obtained by Assayag,5 and more recently by Schmahl and Minzl,6 by Myles and Darby,7 and by McCormack, Myers, and Saxer.8 The two latter sets of data7'' became available after the present study was completed. In the system Cu-0+ two oxides are stable at high temperatures, CuO and CuzO+ each having only minor deviations from stoichiometry. Equilibria in the liquidus temperature region of the system Cu2O-CuO have been studied by Roberts and systemsmyth,9'10CuzO-CuO by Vogel and ocher,I1 by Osterwald,12 and recently the the present authors.13 The system is of the eutectic type with a eutectic temperature of 1083.C The composition of the eutectic liquid corresponds to Xcu0 = °.44, and the oxygen pressure of the coexisting gas phase is Po2 = 0.55 atm.13 Equilibrium oxygen pressures for coexistence of solid CuO and solid Cu2O have been determined by Schmahl and Muller,l4 by Gadalla, Ford, and white,l5 by Bidwell,16 and recently by the present authors.13 There is reasonably good agreement among the various sets of data. Free energies of formation of Cu2O(s) from the elements have been derived by Tretyakov,17 by Bidwell,16 by Kiukkola and wagner,18 by Pal'guev and Neuimin," and by Steele and Alcock,20 There is particularly good agreement among the latter three1'-20 sets of data. The continental margins and ocean basins represent by far the largest unexplored frontier for discovery and development of mineral values. In April 1971, Deepsea Ventures, Inc., at a press conference in its Gloucester Point, Va. headquarters, announced what may become the first commercial deepsea venture--15,000 ft below the ocean surface. During the presentation, Deepsea's president, John E. Flipse, announced that studies made by company personnel had proven the feasibility of mining, transporting, and milling L million tpy of manganese nodules taken from the ocean floor, and that, based on current conditions and prevailing construction costs, a venture of this magnitude would cost about $200 million split evenly between mining and processing facilities. A subsidiary of Tenneco, Deepsea has tentatively reserved 1976 as the year in which it plans to mine, process and market the nodules.

AT the Non-ferrous Metallurgy session on Wednes-day afternoon, R. M. Roosevelt, vice-president of the Eagle-Picher Lead Co., presided. The paper "Sug-gested Improvements for Smelting Copper in the Rever-beratory Furnace," by G. L. Oldright and F. W. Schroeder, was presented by. Mr. Oldright. It was brought out that lessening of dusting of the charge would increase the life of the arch at present operating temperatures, but will not allow much higher tempera-tures to be used unless dusting can be entirely elim-inated. The best opportunity for improving rever-beratory practice lies in the use of still higher tempera-tures but this requires the development of refractories superior to those now used. A method developed by soil scientists for measuring permeability anisotropy of soils has been adapted for use in studies of sandstone permeability aniso-tmpy. Studies on Berea and Bandera sandstone show that permeability of these materials decreases upon application of simulated overburden pressure. Permeability reduction of Berea and Grubb sandstone cores subjected to simulated overburden pressure is shown to be a function of the ratio of radial to axial stress. INTRODUCTION The effects of mechanical stress on reservoir rock parameters are now generally accepted as being important in reservoir engineering calculations. In several oil fields the unique behavior of the reservoir has been attributed to the influence of overburden pressure or internal fluid pressure on rock permeability or fluid content. l Although the gross effects of overburden pressure on permeability, porosity, waterflood efficiency, electrical resistance and sonic velocity have now been established,3-9 there are some very interesting, and perhaps important, details of rock behavior under stress that have not heretofore been studied. In this paper we will show that permeability anistropy of several sandstones is a function of overburden pressure. We will also show that permeability reduction of cylindrical samples of two sandstones, when subjected to mechanical stress, is a function of the ratio of radial to axial stress. Most studies of overburden pressure effects made in the past have attempted to duplicate reservoir conditions by applying hydrostatic external pressure on all surfaces of the sample. Assuming perfect elasticity, that is, no viscoelastic flow during geological time, reservoir rock in situ cannot be under hydrostatic stress as is apparent from the value of 0.25 for Poisson's ratio for most rock. In the absence of tectonic forces the horizontal stress component If there are directional permeability effects, as has been reported from field and laboratory studies, l0,11 then one would expect hydrostatic stress as used in the laboratory to give a different permeability reduction from that occurring under reservoir stress conditions. The influence of stress on directional permeability was measured by a modification of the method first described by Maasland and Kirkham for use on soil samples.12 Their method permits calculation of the permeabilities along each of the three mutually perpendicular axes of a cubic sample. The modification reported in this paper extends the method to observing these permeabilities when the sample is under hydrostatic stress. The Hassler sleeve type of core holder is satisfactory for studying overburden pressure effects on permeability if a known force is applied to the end plugs. Wyble6 used a sleeve core holder but did not load the end plugs. In this paper we combine sleeve pressure and axial force to give permeability changes which we believe are close to those occurring in reservoirs when reservoir pressure changes. The combination of sleeve pressure and axial force assumes, however, that the sleeve pressure simulates both vertical stress and horizontal stress in one direction. METHOD PERMEABILITY ANISOTROPY The Maasland and Kirkhaml2 method of measuring permeability anisotropy uses a cube of porous material which is Open On three faces and has discs with a Center hole for an air inlet cemented to the other three mutually perpendicular faces (Fig. 1). DISCUSSION OF RESULTS The qualitative correlation between low-temperature ductility and prior high-temperature creep strain in nickel obtained in this investigation confirms the result obtained on high-purity brass by Chen and Machlin. However, the quantitative effect is much smaller in nickel. Comparison can be made on the basis of a prior high-temperature strain that is a certain percentage of the total high-temperature elongation to rupture. In the research of Chen and machlin, the prior high-temperature strain of 1/2 pct equaled 8.5 pct of the total high-temperature elongation at rupture. For nickel, in our experiments, 8.5 pct of 21.2 pct equals 1.8 pct. For eh = 1.8 pct, the loss in ductility in percent equals x 100 = b.5 pct. Schmatz IRON-aluminum alloys have gained much interest in the past few years for use as a base material for elevated-temperature alloys because of their excel- high-temperature strain the loss in low-temperature ductility is 8.5 pct for nickel as compared to 60 pct for pure a, brass. It is also interesting to note the observation that in nickel the low-temperature fractures, even at the most extreme high-temperature pre-strain, were partly trans crystalline and partly intercrystalline. In the case of a brass, these fractures were completely intercrystalline. According to the data on the percent of the grain boundary area that is cracked, at 22 pct high-temperature elongation, about 12.5 pct of the grain boundary area does not carry load. Thus, the inter-crack areas are carrying a stress that is about 11 pct higher than the nominal stress. A simple model predicts that the overall elongation, which is primarily the elongation in the bulk of the specimen, will correspond to the nominal stress when the stress in the intercrack area equals the tensile strength. Quantitatively this model predicts the equation The form of this equation will agree with that found if the strain-hardening exponent, n, equals unity. Actually this model is too gross an approximation to yield good quantitative results. The question naturally arises as to whether in ordinary hot-working, such as hot-rolling, intercrys-talline cracks are introduced that affect the low-temperature properties. It appears that the answer is that such a possibility cannot be overlooked, if the hot-working induces tensile stresses at temperatures above the equicohesive temperature and if the material tends to be notch sensitive at low temperature. Although coke is the acknowledged metallurgical fuel, and has been extensively used in this country for more than thirty years, yet the facts on record in regard to its physical properties are exceedingly meagre; and this is also true, but in a less degree, of its chemical composition. An investigation is being carried on in the National Museum which is intended to supply, so far as may be, this deficiency, and through the kindness of Professor Baird, Director of the Museum, I am permitted to present to the Institute a summary of a portion of the results already obtained. So far as I am aware, the credit for the first systematic investigation of the physical properties of coke belongs to Mr. John Fulton, Mining Engineer of Cambria Iron Co. The results of this investigation have been published in Report L, Second Geological Survey, Pennsylvania, 1875, and in a pamphlet setting forth the advantages of the Connellsville coke, the latter published also by the " Virginias"* His results are not altogether free from experimental errors, and the assumption that "the specific gravities of coke and water are very nearly alike "- is scarcely warranted. It has seemed to me, therefore, desirable to make an independent investigation of the physical properties of coke on a plan somewhat different from that adopted by Mr. Fulton. This is the investigation now being carried on at the National Museum.

Knowledge of the initial state of stress in rocks provides a key to the solution of many problems in rock mechanics. The initial state of stress is part of the basic data required for rational design of structures in rock, since its redistribution when engineering activities are conducted is a primary load on the rock portion of the engineering system. Knowledge of initial and subsequent changes in the state of stress is also relevant in the study of active faults and crustal strain. The purposes of stress measurements are not generally well served by methods which disclose only one of the stress components at a point. Recently, interest has centered on overcoring methods which though ex- pensive and difficult have the important advantage of yielding data on three or more stress components. In a previous paper, the authors introduced a new method-termed borehole deepening-based on measurement of the deformations that occur close to the bottom of a borehole when it is deepened by further drilling without overcoring.l The proposed method is at a disadvantage when compared with over- coring procedures in that the quantities to be measured are somewhat smaller and the measuring environment is more hostile. However, the borehole deepening method presents three distinct advantages in comparison with overcoring procedures: (1) Using the same borehole, both the initial and the subsequent changes in the state of stress can be obtained by borehole deepening. The diffusion rate in Ag-Sb couples is sensitive to con~pressive load with the width of Ag3Sb, the only phase present in the diffusion zone, increasing with stress up to 800 psi and remaining constant above this. Kirkendall marker experiments show silver to diffuse much faster than antimony in Ag3Sb and incipient porosity may therefore develop at the Ag/Ag3Sb interfnce restricting the transfer of atoms from the silver into the diflusion zone. Application of compressive stress reduces the tendency for porosity to develop and so increases the growth rate. In a recent paper Brown et al.1 observed a significant increase in the thickness of Cu2Te in Cu-Te diffusion couples on application of a compressive stress as low as 20 psi. Similar stress effects have also been observed in the Fe-A1,2 Al-u,3 arid cu-sb4,5 systems. It has been suggested that the increase in growth rates of intermetallic phases in these systems is due to a decrease in the amount of Kirkendall porosity with applied stress. In the present paper, results are presented of the effect of compressive stress on diffusion in Ag-Sb, together with a detailed examination of the Kirkendall effect. The Ag-Sb phase diagram6 shows that antimony has a moderate degree of solid solubility in silver, 5.7 at. pct at 350°C, but that there is essentially no solubility of silver in antimony. There are two intermediate phases— (hcp7) from 8.8 to 15.7 at. pct Sb and Ag3Sb (orthorhombic8) from 21.8 to 25.9 at. pct Sb. EXPERIMENTAL Diffusion couples were prepared from fine silver of 99.95 pct purity and from antimony of 99.7 pct purity. Both the silver and antimony were produced in the form of discs 1/2 in. in diam by approximately $ in. thick, with surfaces ground flat to 3/0 emery paper. Diffusion anneals were carried out in the apparatus previously described.1 A compressive load was applied to the diffusion couple through a lever arm system, with a reproducibility estimated to be ±10 psi. All runs were carried out in a protective hydrogen atmosphere. Following the diffusion anneal specimens were sectioned and polished and the width of the diffusion zone was measured metallographically. Composition profiles were measured using an electrostatically focused electron probe with a spot size of 10 , counting on Sb L radiation. Corrections for matrix absorptiori and fluorescent enhancement9 were not required. S. K. IMD RESULTS Fig. 1 shows an electron probe traverse of a typical diffusion zone. In all couples examined only one intermediate phase was observed and the composition of this phase, 23 wt pct Sb, was in good agreement with the composition of Ag3Sb, 23 to 28 wt pct Sb. The presence of this phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction of filings taken from the diffusion zone. The probe traverses showed no detectable solid solubility in either the silver or the antimony although the phase diagram indicates that some antimony, up to 6.5 wt pct pct Sb, should be in solid solution in the silver. However the width of this portion of the diffusion zone would be expected to be very small in view of the low diffusion coefficient in the silver, 4 x 10-l6 sq cm per sec at 350°C, 10 compared with that in the Ag,Sb, estimated as 3 x 10-8 sq cm per sec in the present work, and this region would therefore not be expected to be seen in the probe traverse. Application of stress resulted in a significant increase in the width of the diffusion zone, Fig. 2. At 350°C, the thickness of Ag3Sb increased from 250 at 0 psi to 400 p at the limiting stress of 800 psi, indicating an apparent 150 pct increase in the diffusion coefficient. Similar behavior was also observed at 400°C, indicating that the stress effect is not characteristic of just one temperature. The growth of Ag3Sb at 350°C and at various stresses is shown in Fig. 3. In every case the growth rate was parabolic indicating diffusion control. The kinetic curves all passed through the origin showing that delayed nucleation of Ag3Sb was not responsible for the stress effect and that it was a real growth effect. A series of tests were carried out in which diffusion was allowed to take place at a lower stress following an initial high stress diffusion anneal. Speci-

(written dlscussion ?) .-It is interesting to observe how closely Mr. Hansen agrees with other investigators to the effect that the art of electrolytic zinc has left the realm of mystery. In his introduction, lie has said practically what Thomas French said in his paper "The Future of Electrolytic Zinc. "1 The successful electrolysis of zinc from sulphate solutions has not been an easy matter, and it is only within recent years that the difficult problem of depositing high-grade zinc has been satisfactorily: accomplished on a commercial basis. The principal requisite is. that the electrolyte shall be quite free from certain impurities. The methods by which freedom from these impurities is assured are now very well understood, and with experienced superintendents there is little difficulty in obtaining a high efficiency in that part of the process. When certain underlying principles are recognized, the difficulty encountered in dealing with the filtration of the acid and slimy solutions also largely disappears, although it has been a very serious one to the uninitiated. In the dissolving of the zinc from the roasted ore, there is nothing which any competent chemical' engineer cannot undertake, and any other operations connected with the electrolytic process are either of little or no difficulty, or are common to the retort process. Mr. Hansen also agrees with R. G. Hall's statement in " Some Economic Factors in the Production of Electrolytic Zinc:"2
