Graton and Dr. Joseph Murdochl presented to the American Institute of Mining Engineers a notable contribution to economic geology under the title The Sulphide Ores of Copper. The value of the work was recognized by mine operators, and Mr. Graton was assisted in his plan to extend his investigations, by the organization of a commission to undertake a "secondary enrichment investigation." Auburn Dam will be a thin, double-curvature concrete arch dam about 685 ft high. With a crest length of about 4000 ft, it will be the world's longest single-arch dam. The site is located on the North Fork of the American River about 40 miles northeast of Sacramento, Calif. Construction is scheduled to get under way in 1970. In planning for the design and construction of Auburn Dam (see artist's conception), the foundation material, with its various discontinuities, is being investigated and the structural characteristics of the rock mass evaluated. The investigation and testing programs will aid in defining the pertinent geologic features and their individual and cumulative influence on the foundation. The work includes geologic surface mapping, surface trenching, core drilling, geophysics, tunneling, excavating shafts and raises, performing in-situ tests, and conducting laboratory tests on core and block samples. Competent amphibolite is the predominant material in the foundation, but significant bodies of chloritic, talcose, and metasedimentary rocks, a strongly developed jointing pattern, faults, and shear zones also affect the deformability of the rock mass. A comprehensive rock mechanics program, closely coordinated with geologic investigations as well as the engineering studies, therefore is required The rock mechanics work is a combination of many analytical studies and experimental investigations. The experimental work includes laboratory tests on core samples from holes drilled for geological studies of the entire foundation and in-situ tests performed in selected areas. The laboratory testing program evaluates the general properties of all important rock types and aids in correlating many of the key structural features encountered within the foundation. A microelectrophoresis technique has been used to measure the zeta potential of quartz over a range of pH and ferric iron concentration. The results have been discussed in terms of the adsorption of ferric cations and ferric hydroxide to the quartz surface. Possible relationships between the experimental results and the flotation of quartz have been examined. The adsorption of multivalent cations at the surface of quartz has been studied by many investigators who have used a variety of experimental techniques ranging from streaming potential 1 to radiometric2 measurements. Two possible mechanisms of cation activation of quartz have emerged from the results of these investigations viz: the adsorption of the cation to the negatively charged quartz surface, followed by adsorption of the collector anion to the adsorbed cation site, or: formation of a cation-collector complex which is then adsorbed to the quartz surface. In many natural and industrial systems one of the most prevalent activating species for quartz is ferric iron, this is especially so in the acid-circuit, anionic flotation of iron ore. The adsorption of ferric iron to the quartz surface is complicated by the ability of ferric iron to form complexes with anions, a phenomena which is of minor importance in one of the most widely studied quartz activation processes, ca ++ activation.* *The pK value for [ca(oH)+]/ [ca2+] [oh-] is 1.46 indicating that the influence of Ca (OH)+ ions will be minor in all but strongly alkaline solutions. In order to obtain a better understanding of quartz activation by ferric iron the zeta potential of quartz in the presence of ferric iron has been measured over a range of pH and ferric iron concentration. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Materials: Selected samples of "rock clystal" quartz from New England, N.S.W., were ground in a pebble mill, washed for three hours in boiling concentrated hydrochloric acid, washed in hot chromic acid and then washed repeatedly with distilled water until the washing water gave no trace of chloride ion.

The peninsula of Nicoya contains virtually all of the known manganese deposits of Costa Rica. These are south and west of the Tempisque River, which flows across the peninsula near its juncture with the mainland. This peninsula forms the westernmost part of the province of Guana-caste, which is the northern. of the two Pacific Coast provinces of Costa Rica. The larger villages are connected by ox-cart roads and trails. The area may be covered on horseback without difficulty except during the rainy season, when rivers are in flood and difficult to ford. This is particularly true of the Rio Seco-Guay-jiniquil area, where there are no inhabitants and few open trails through the tropical jungle. Santa Cruz and Sardinal are served by the Taca Airlines, two planes a week from San Jose and Puntarenas. The port of Puntarenas has excellent loading facilities but none are available nearer the manganese districts; there ore must be lightered to vessels standing offshore. Physiography In Costa Rica there are three physiographic divisions: (I) the central plateau (Mesa Central), a somewhat dissected lava platform upon which are superimposed volcanic peaks, some of which are still active; (2) the Atlantic lowlands and (3) the Pacific lowlands. The peninsula of Nicoya and the larger part of the province of Guanacaste lie within the Pacific low- lands. The term "lowland" indicates relation to the central plateau, as the peninsula of Nicoya is largely mountainous. The mountains of Nicoya form the southern extremity of a range of low hills, which are almost continuous along the Costa Rican coast to the Nicaraguan border. The coast line shows evidence of subsidence. The Gulf of Nicoya obviously is the drowned valley of the Tempisque River. The west coast of Nicoya shows many rocks, shoals, bays, inlets and small islands as evidence of a sea encroachment. The altitude of the manganese deposits ranges from 0 to 800 ft. Topography is of the mature type of wide valleys and low hills, often with abrupt slopes. The climate is tropical and humid; rainfall of 125 in. falls largely between Sept. I and Jan. I. Vegetation often is very dense, the Rio Seco-Guayjiniquil area being truly tropical jungle, containing many hardwoods. History and Production The production of manganese ore in Costa Rica apparently dates from the first World War. It reached a peak of about 10,000 tons in the year 1919, then declined rapidly. Evidence of this period of prospecting has rotted away or been swallowed by the jungle. The war now in progress apparently revived the interest in Costa Rican manganese and has encouraged further prospecting. Ordinarily age-hardening is thought of as being associated with a limited solubility of one metal in another. Much less has been written about the type of age-hardening that attends the formation of superstructures. Solid solutions generally have a disordered or random arrangement of atoms; that is to say, in a unit cell, such as that of the face-centered cubic lattice, there is no distinction between atomic sites. Atoms of a given metal may occupy cube corners or face centers. Under certain conditions, however, some alloys develop what is known as an ordered structure. In this case, cube corners would be occupied by only one type of atom and face centers by another type. Associated with this ordering process are many interesting changes in physical and electrical properties. Moreover, in many instances the alloys become susceptible to age-hardening. From the evidence now to be described, it appears that age-hardening in 14-carat gold alloys is due to the formation of both a superstructure and a precipitate. Alloys of the metals gold, silver and copper were known in antiquity. The available knowledge regarding their constitution has been ably summarized and extended by Sterner-Rainer,' Jänecke,2 Carter,3 Wise,4 and Coleman.5 Despite the long familiarity with these alloys and the numerous investigations of their properties that have been made, there is still much that remains unexplained. It has been known for a long time that the hardness of these alloys is closely related to the rate of cooling. Similar changes have been observed in the binary gold-copper systemI6 one alloy of which corresponding to the formula CU³AU, has been the subject of a careful and competent report by the English investigators, Sykes and Evans.7 They have established the fact that the shift of atoms from the ordered to the disordered condition takes place in some critical temperature range. At temperatures above the critical range the structure is random, and at temperatures below it the structure is ordered. No difference between these two structures is revealed by the microscope. Both have a face-centered cubic lattice and complete solubility, so that there is no evidence to suggest that the changes in properties are associated with a phase change. The more slowly the alloy is cooled, the higher is the degree to which the ordering process proceeds and the more marked is the increase in hardness. As experimental data were accumulated on I4-carat gold alloys, several contradictions arose. Certain observations tended to confirm the existence of a superstructure, while other observations seemed to be inconsistent with such a transformation. Present Investigation As a focal point about which to develop this subject, it is expedient to consider first

Application of rock engineering in geotechnial consulting practice considered herein is in areas of: (a) bedrock verification for foundation support, (b) bearing capacity and settlements, and (c) excavations. A routine geotechnical investigation usually provides data on depth to rock, rock classification, and rock quality. In cases of rock outcrop, such outcrops are mapped for geologic structures and rock mass description. In addition, the regional geology and the general aspects of the groundwater regime are usually known from either published literature or previous experience. The predominant technique for ground and site investigation are usually drilling and geologic reconnaissance. Other techniques involving seismic and geophysical soundings, borehole camera, and oriented cores are used by by no means routine. Performing laboratory strength and compressibility tests is often made to be considered as routine. The use of the point load test is gaining increasing use in the United States and would, perhaps, become a routine field or laboratory test due to its simplicity and, more importantly, its relatively low cost. The purpose of this paper is to describe cases where mostly routine investigation and testing were used to arrive at engineering decisions. Bearing Capacity and Settlements The allowable bearing values for foundation support on rock is usually dictated by local building codes which presumably should reflect local experience. The interpretation of the code, however, can present a problem, especially if the interpretation is made by a designer under the delusion of knowledge in rock engineering. For

Magnetite pellets were reduced in flowing hydrogen at pressures up to 40 atm over a temperature range of 350° to 500°C. The rate of weight loss of oxygen per unit area of the reaction surface was found to be constant with time at each temperature and pressure. The reaction rate was found to be directly proportional to hydrogen pressure up to 1 atm and to approach a maximum rate at high pressures. The results can be explained by considering the reaction surface to be sparsely occupied by adsorbed hydrogen at low pressures and saturated at high pressures. PREVIOUS investigation1,2 have shown that the reduction of iron oxides in hydrogen is controlled at the reaction interface. Under fixed conditions of temperature, hydrogen pressure, and gas composition, the reduction rate is constant with time, per unit surface area of residual oxide, and is directly proportional to the hydrogen pressure up to one atmosphere. The reduction rate of a sphere of iron oxide can be described3 by the following equation which takes into account the changing reaction surface area: where ro and do are the initial radius and density of the sphere; t is time; R is the fractional reduction; and R, is the reduction rate constant with units mass per area per time. The quantityis actually the fractional thickness of the reduced layer in terms of fractional reduction R. It was found in a previous investigation2 of the reduction of magnetite pellets in H2-H,O-N, mixtures, that the reaction rate was directly proportional to the hydrogen partial pressure up to 1 atm at a constant ratio of water vapor to hydrogen. Water vapor poisoned the oxide surface by an oxidizing reaction and markedly slowed the reduction. The enthalpy of activation was found to be + 13,600 cal per mole. It was also found that the magnetite reduced to meta-stable wüstite before proceeding to iron metal. The following equation was derived from absolute reaction-rate theory4,8 to expfain the experimental data: where Ro is the reduction rate in mg cm-2 min-'; KO contains the conversion units; Ph2 and PH2O are the hydrogen and water vapor partial pressures in atmospheres; Ke is the equilibrium constant for the Fe,O,/FeO equilibrium; Kp is the equilibrium constant for the poisoning reaction of water vapor; L is the total number of active sites; k and h are Boltzmann's and Planck's constants; and AF is the free energy of activation. Tenenbaum zind Joseph5 studied the reduction of iron ore by hydrogen at pressures over 1 atm. They showed that increasing the hydrogen pressure materially increased the rate of reduction. This is in accordance with the work of Diepschlag,6 who found that the rate of reduction of iron ores by either carbon monoxide or hydrogen was much greater at higher pressures. He used pressures as high as 7 atm. In order to further understand the mechanism of the reduction of iron oxide by hydrogen it was decided to study the effect of increasing the hydrogen pressure on rebduction rates of magnetite pellets. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The dense magnetite pellets used in these experiments were made in the following manner. Reagent-grade ferric oxide was moistened with water and hand-rolled into spherical pellets. The pellets were heated slowly to 550°C in an atmosphere of 10 pct H2-90 pct CO, and held for 1 hr. They were then heated slowly to 1370°C in an atmosphere of 2 pct H2-98 pct CO, then cooled slowly in the same atmosphere. The sintered pellets were crystalline magnetite with an apparent density of about 4.9 gm per cm3. They were about 0.9 cm in diam. The porosity of the pellets, which was discontinuous in nature, was akrout 6 pct. The pellets were suspended from a quartz spring balance in a vertical tube furnace. The equipment is shown in Fig. 1. Essentially the furnace consists of a 12-in. OD stainless steel outer shell and a 3-in. ID inconel inner shell. The kanthal wound 22 in. long, 1 1/2, in. ID alumina reaction tube is inside the inconel inner shell. Prepurified hydrogen sweeps the reaction tube to remove the water vapor formed during the reaction. The hydrogen is static in the rest of the furnace. The sample is placed at the bottom of the furnace in a nickel wire mesh basket suspended by nickel wire from the quartz spring. The furnace is then sealed, evacuated, and refilled with argon several times to remove all traces of oxygen. It is then evacuated, filled with

Geological Sketch.-The rhyolite area near Silver Cliff includes what may be called the Silver Cliff plateau, with Round mountain and the intervening valley. The plateau is about 2 miles long and 1 mile wide. From its northern part rise the White hills, which have no special topographic importance, as their highest point is only 400 ft. above the northern edge of the rhyolite mass. Round mountain, on the other hand, is a quite sharply pointed conical hill, so steep-sided as to constitute an important topographic feature, although its elevation above the plains around it is barely 700 ft. The summit of Round mountain is dense banded rhyolite, with steep, irregular clip; the southern end is breccia containing fragments of the banded rock. There are slight exposures of glassy forms of rhyolite on the lower slopes. On the east, the Archaean rocks extend half-way up the side of the mountain, and the contact between them and the rhyolite is vertical, or dips steeply to the west. This mountain is supposed to be at the vent from which the rhyolite of the plateau was poured out. The Silver Cliff plateau occupies the site of a former basin, in which at one time there was probably a lake. At the time of the rhyolitic outburst of the Rosita hills there was a local eruption of the same character in this region, commencing with showers of volcanic ash and of rock-fragments, which filled the lake and built tip about it hills which have since been removed in great measure by erosion. At present the southern half of the plateau is capped by solid lava to a depth in places of 150 ft. The cliff of blackened rhyolite on the southern edge, where the main discovery of ore was made, is from 30 to 50 ft.

THE AUTHOR hopes that this paper will meet with criticism and debate by fellow members of the Institute rather than with that attitude of passiv-ity and indifference which one is inclined to adopt when considering a field completely foreign to one's own experi-ence. After several years of study of voluminous literature, maps, and statistics, and many personal journeys and field inspections of various parts of Siberia, the conclusion is reached .that the area adjacent to the Stanovoi, Zhugd-Zhur, and Yablonoi ranges as below defined is that which .is most accessible to the western world and will soonest give results from exploration. HISTORY The first incursion of the Russians into Siberia east of the Yenesei River appears to have been in 1632 when the fort of Yakutsk was founded on the middle Lena. The early expeditions were in quest of furs. As the Siberians say, "the sable beckoned" and the post of Anadyr was founded in 1639, two thousand miles further northeast. Thus nineteen years after the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, the Russians had established a trading post within 700 miles of what is now the town of Nome, Alaska. Parties of Cossaks penetrated to the shores of the Okotsk1 Sea early in the seventeenth century, but it was not until 1688 that the town of Okotsk was founded. In 1712 a grand project was elaborated at St. Petersburg for building a port at Okotsk, but it came to nothing. Vitus Bering, the Alaska explorer, built ships at Okotsk, and made this his point of depar-ture. It is stated that the iron work used in these ships was brought overland partly from Yakutsk, and partly even from St. Petersburg, 5500 miles away. Accord-ing to report a copper deposit was worked on the river Urak, not far from the coast, and copper was smelted for sheathing the bottoms. Grassgrown mounds con-taining slag and shots of copper were inspected by the writer last summer, at the site of the ancient shipyard.

In the past 15 years a considerable amount of experimental and theoretical work has been done concerning the onset of convection in liquids as a result of interm1 density gradients. This work, which has been doue in many different fields, is reviewed here and extended slightly to give a rrlore quantitative understanding to the probletrz of conzection in liquid metal dlffusion experinletzts. In liquid metal systems the capillary reservoir technique is currently used, almost exclusively, to measure diffusion coefficients. In this technique it is necessary that the liquid be stagnant in order to avoid mixing by means of convection currents. Convective mixing may result from: 1) convection produced as a result of the initial immersion of the capillary; 2) convection produced in the region of the capillary mouth as the result of the stirring frequency used to avoid solute buildup in the reservoir near the capillary mouth; 3) convection produced during solidification as a result of the volume change; and 4) convection produced as a result of local density differences within the liquid in the capillary. The first three types of convection have been discussed elsewhere1-a and are only mentioned for completeness here. This work is concerned only with the fourth type of convection. Local density differences will arise within the liquid as a result of either a temperature gradient or a concentration gradient. It is usually, but not always, recognized by those employing the capillary reservoir technique that the top of the capillary should be kept slightly hotter than the bottom and that the light element should be made to migrate downward in order to avoid convection. In the past 15 years a considerable amount of work, both theoretical and experimental, has been done in a number of different fields which bear on this problem. This work is reviewed here and extended slightly in an effort to give a more quantitative understanding of the convective motion produced in vertical capillaries by local density differences. The Stokes-Navier equations for an incompressible fluid of constant viscosity in a gravitational field may be written as: %L + (v?)v = - ?£ + Wv - g£ [1] where F is the velocity, t the time, P the pressure, p the density, v the kinematic viscosity, g the gravitational acceleration, and k a unit vector in the vertical direction. A successful diffusion experiment requires the liquid to be motionless, and under this condition Eq. [I] becomes: where a is the thermal expansion coefficient [a =-(l/po)(dp/d)], a' is a solute expansion coefficient [a' = -(l/po)(dp/d)], and the solute is taken as that component which makes a' a positive number. Combining with Eq. [3] the following restriction is obtained: Since there is no fixed relation between VT and VC in a binary diffusion experiment, Eq. [5] shows that the condition of fluid motionlessness requires both the temperature gradient and the concentration gradient to be vertically directed. Given this condition of a density gradient in the vertical direction only, it is obvious that, as this vertical density gradient increases from negative to positive values, the motionless liquid will eventually become unstable and convective movement will begin. The classical treatment of this type of instability problem was given by aleih' in 1916 for the case of a thin fluid film of infinite horizontal extent; and a very comprehensive text has recently been written on the subject by handrasekhar.' It is found that convective motion does not begin until a dimensionless number involving the density gradient exceeds a certain critical value. This dimensionless number is generally referred to as the Rayleigh number, R, and it is equal to the product of the Prandtl and Grashof numbers. For the sake of clarity a distinction will be made between two types of free convection produced by internal density gradients. In the first case a density gradient is present in the vertical direction only, and, since the convection begins only after a critical gradient is attained, this case will be called threshold convection. In the second case a horizontal density gradient is present and in this case a finite convection velocity is produced by a finite density gradient so that it will be termed thresholdless convection. Some experimentalists have performed diffusion experiments using capillaries which were placed in a horizontal or inclined position in order to avoid convection. These positions do put the small capillary dimension in the vertical direction and, consequently, they would be less prone to threshold convection than the vertical position. A series of organic collectors has been developed which successfully float synthetic secondary uranium minerals, such as autunite, carnotite, and torbernite. Recoveries up to 97 pct have been obtained. With cleaning of rougher concentrates, ratios of concentration as high as 15:l are possible on head assays of 0.10 to 0.50 pct U308. Additions of certain base metal salts aid in recovery and materially in- crease the rate of flotation and selectivity of the collectors for the synthetic minerals. Flotation tests on natural uranium minerals have not yet equaled results obtained on the synthetics, although these collectors do give better results than conventional collectors for nonsulfide minerals.
